The Lovers of Valdaro - a couple who has been locked in their final embrace for over 5,000 years
Rat king - a group of rats whose tails have become tangled and knotted, binding them together
Triassic cuddle - a porto-mammal and amphibian, found huddled in a burrow. the Thrinaxodon was hibernating, while the Broomistega was injured, and fleeing rising flood waters
black smoke cats have silver undercoats, so it might be just the undercoat showing through + bright lighting + poor image quality, but that does look awfully white
do u think the baby is going to grow out of looking so exhausted and decrepit, in a way not unlike Yoda from Star Wars, or is that just what devon rexes look like sometimes? (written with extreme affectionate towards this new little beast)
well to answer that, let's look at his mother
and his father - who I owe an apology to! this is complete tangent, but I thought the other stud at the cattery had cucked him, because Belphegor has white spotting but neither of his parents do. which is genetically impossible (it's a co-dominant, not a recessive, meaning it would always be visible)
but those bat ears of his father, with their notched flanges, are so weird and distinctive! you can see that Belphegor has them, and nearly all of his littermates do too
SO NOW I'm thinking, the father has to have some white spotting that just isn't visible in his photo! right? like a white tail-tip, or a single white toe on his back foot, or maybe a locket on his chest? I've become an ear truther
but what was the original ask, I got completely distracted by the cuckoldry speculation. oh yeah, aging, yeah I think Belphegor will grow up to look noble and beautiful like his mother and his (maybe) father

I reached out to an old high school friend after 12 years of not speaking, only to find that she's in Greece doing a phd on psychiatric euthanasia. I confessed to being ignorant about the topic, so she emailed me 19 research papers and said "this will be a good start"
I asked another friend to provide a professional reference for me as part of a grant application. she agreed to, on the condition that I log into neopets, collect the daily free item, and transfer it to her account

“The Thrinaxodon was in a torpor and wouldn’t have woken up before it drowned in the rain. The Broomistega was badly injured and dying. Neither of them ever actually knew each other but their last moments are curled up together and immortalized in stone.” -xxx @picckl
i was researching cat eye colors and was jumpscared by pangur like what is the tumblr creature doing outside of tumblr
on messybeast?
Pangur's eyes are actually pretty neat, because she comes from a line of white and pointed cats that have been selectively bred to have the bluest possible eyes!
blue in eyes is caused by structural colouration, rather than pigment (aka the physical structure of the iris reflects blue)
the intensity of colour varies quite a lot. on one end of the spectrum, there are icy eyes that appear almost white
and on the other end, there are cats like Pangur's mother, Lily. her blue was so intense that it looked unreal, even in person.
with albinism, you have an inability to produce pigment, but the structural colour remains.
in cats with weak structural colour, this results in pale pinkish eyes, like those of Stoli here
and in cats like Pangur, who have been selectively bred for the bluest blue? you get violet
My heart melted seeing the Lincoln Park zoo pride, the cubs are yearlings and already getting big, they grow up so fast😭. Lomelok just went through surgery yesterday to correct a slipped spinal disc. Plz send good vibes to Chicago!
I think Lomelok is a testament to how excellent veterinary care is for zoo animals, in the wild he probably would’ve died before his first birthday as he started showing experiencing weakness in his hind legs and tired easily as a tiny cub. Just wanted to share.
According to the zoo yesterday, he's out of surgery and doing well!
"The update we’ve all been waiting for with bated breath. Last night, around midnight, Lomelok fully stood up on his own for the first time! This is a huge milestone for his recovery but is one of the first literal and figurative steps in his journey. Afterward, he took a long 5-hour nap as the care team observed from nearby via camera so he could rest undisturbed.
Lomelok is currently recovering in a small space that controls the level of his activity during these critical first 72 hours."
