#2011 A Day in the Life of Darren Criss

Tumblr media
My name is Meg. I’ve been on tumblr since 2011/2012. I started off as a gl*e blog and then kind of just segued into general fandom nonsense. Then around 2015-ish, I transferred to a big university where Twitter was the big thing. Pair that with an internship, graduating, and starting a job that has all but broken me in every way possible, my tumblr habits pretty much became nonexistent. It wasn’t out of malice or spite or anything weird, it just kind of happened. With that being said, Twitter really sucks now and I’m mentally at a place where I think in terms of reblogs instead of retweets. So without further blubbering, I’m here to (re) introduce myself:
-my name is meg
-I’m 28
-I’m a teacher
-i am currently in a graduate program to get my masters in library/information science
-I read. Too much.
-I have adhd, fall somewhere on the autism spectrum, and have crippling anxiety fueled depression
-I am queer
-I love things probably too much and too loudly but that was always my favorite thing about tumblr, someone was always weirder and louder than you so it was okay
-I really enjoy the idea of scrapbooking/journaling/collaging but I have no space to do it physically so I’m going to revisit tumblr to see if this can scratch that itch
-I’m hoping this will be a space for my pop culture interests as well as academic/general life things as well
-I know I’m entirely too old and out of touch as to how tumblr runs nowadays compared to how it did back when I couldn’t go 5 minutes without checking my phone but I’m hoping to find someway to quiet the incessant ticker tape 24 hour newsfeed happening in my head
-I’m happy to fulfill the elderly lady in the rocking chair position who people go to for stories about the olden days with pride
No real ending to this except to say my dms are always open and I’m happy to chat about literally anything. I’m gonna put all of my “stuff” in the tags in case you see anything we have in common. Keep in mind this account is over 10 years old and I’ve done a lot of growing and changing in that time (aka any glee takes you find I probably do not align myself with anymore - except that the Darren Criss version of a song was probably better than the original. I will ALWAYS stand by that)
The picture up top is of my latest tattoo that I’m just obsessed with and show off at any and all opportunities.
Hope everyone had a peaceful and warm holiday season, and if you didn’t, I’m sending the warmest hugs and light to you.
All the love,
M

Meeting Her Inner Circle
Penelope Myers: grew up together Evan Peters: through penny Joe Keery: during stranger things screen test Ross Butler: at a party when they were both on disney shows Mason Gooding: scream 6 auditions & screen test Caleb McLaughlin: backstage when he was in the lion king Jack Champion: met at avatar auditions & again at the scream 6 auditions Zach Beeken: met through garrett & frequently collaborates with him
Her Acting Career
dad booked her a commercial when she was 5, but she did nothing in the career for nearly 10 years. when she was 15, she played a small role in an unaired and unnamed tv show that never got picked up. she then got determined to book a solid role and booked teen wolf as a main cast member for the 2nd season. subsequently appeared on superstore and her career just kicked off from there. voices multiple characters on the simpsons, starting in season 29, and was a main character in sing 2.
Her Music Career
somewhere between landing the role on teen wolf and the role on superstore, she began writing songs. a lot of them sucked so she decided to post covers on youtube. was discovered after her 5th cover, by george strait. he got her signed to his label and she took songwriting classes to up her game. started off in country music but has ventured into other genres. she is currently one of the biggest stars in the music industry.
Her Enemies

I've kept pretty consistent diaries from 2008 to around 2015, and looking through my old stuff these last days I've started reading a bit here and there. And its... It's fascinating. 2011 especially - reading this is half funny, half sweet, half confusing, and half pretty cringy bc that's just how that is I think, but what strikes me most of all is that what i see there is a version of myself that is being overtly, nauseatingly straight. At the time I had a huge crush on a classmate and diary!me also keeps commenting a lot on other, more aesthetic crushes on male film stars and classmates alike. At the same time, there is a thread running through the narrative that i was utterly unaware of at the time -- a fascination with queer stories and a fervent latching-onto the gay rights movement of the time, ostensibly as an ally. There was Glee, which for all its cringe-factor looking back on it was my gateway, through Kurt and Blaine taking the world of social media by storm, to gay narratives and experiences and i was spellbound. Darren Criss kissed Chris Colfer in-character live on stage in Dublin and twitter nearly crashed, New York legalized gay marriage, Lady Gaga sang Born This Way. That was the background noise of my life at the time, all while I didn't question my own sexuality (or god forbid gender) in the slightest, while I teenage-feeling-ed my way through the dozenth unreciprocated mooning-from-afar crush on a boy, and while the most fascinating part of reading these old diary entries is the little red thread of a name that keeps coming up over and over with what is easily the most feeling, and the most confusion over how it's possible to feel this way about somebody, about how I both want to be around her all the time and at the same time can barely stand it for the sheer intensity of feeling that comes up in me when I do. About how I've never been as happy in my entire life as on that afternoon we sat in the park and then biked home, talking for hours and hours, feeling on a wavelength in a way I've never felt before, thinking she was beautiful, and brave, and funny, and smart, and just the most amazing person, and feeling drawn in, always, in a way that was unlike anything else I knew. That was how I'd felt about her from sixth grade on - ever since I met her. What's new, there in 2011, is watching my past self begin to not just repeatedly write something like that down, but start to ...to go, what is this? Start to become a little bit self-aware. Not too much, mind, but.... there's a shift happening right around that time (which would continue to happen for a good couple of years) and you can see it slowly developing, reading that old diary, and it's a bit of a really peculiar feeling.

Gender: She/Her
Star sign: Scorpio
Height: 5′5
Time: 3:28pm
Birthday: November 20
Favorite bands: I listen to so many things but to name a few: Muse, Imagine Dragons, Walk The Moon, Vampire Weekend, Mumford & Sons, Of Monsters and Men, The Lumineers, and Queen.
Favorite solo artists: Again, I listen to so much: Harry Styles, Florence Welch, Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Ed Sheeran, Darren Criss, and Adele.
Song stuck in my head: Psycho by Muse.
Last movie: Wonder Woman 1984
Last show: Supernatural or Bridgerton
When did I create this blog: I think June 2011
What I post: my blog has turned multi-fandom and that includes things like: MCU, 911, Supernatural, Black Sails, Glee, Bridgerton, TUA, Doctor Who, Jane Austen adaptations, and anything that really catches my attention. I also post about reading and my writing a lot and occasionally write meta or reviews for the things I’m reading or watching.
Last thing googled: Probably something to do with pirates for the book I’m writing.
Other blogs: I have a few URLs saved but they’re pretty much empty. I think I used one to bookmark fics I wanted to read.
Do I get asks: Very rarely, but they do happen on occasion.
Why I chose my url: It’s a reference to one of my favorite Broadway shows, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I saw it on Broadway when Darren Criss played Hedwig and the song Wicked Little Town is beautiful and haunting.
Following: 593 - which tells you a lot about how I haven’t cleared this out in ages since I’m pretty sure a good portion of those blogs are not active at all anymore.
Followers: 922
Average hours of sleep: 6 or 7, but some days I manage with as little as 4.
Lucky number: I don’t really have one?
Instruments: I played the piano as a kid and could probably still pick it up if I needed to and I played the clarinet in middle school. I don’t think I was very good at either btw.
What am I wearing: Jeans, a flowy black tank-top, and a cardigan.
Favorite food: I love burgers but also lamb gyros, but currently all I want is a spinach soup - so really this changes by the day.
Nationality: Ecuadorian
Favorite song: I think something by Queen like Killer Queen or Don’t Stop Me Now because I will never stop listening to these songs, but currently and I blame my recent rewatch of Supernatural, I cannot get enough of Carry On My Wayward Son (but then Kansas is pretty epic too though because Dust In the Wind...I mean, what a song).
Last book read: First off, I read 65 books this year which is more than I’ve read in a year since High School (because life). But the last book I read was A Beautifully Foolish Endeavour by Hank Green and I am currently reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab.
Top three fictional universes I’d like to live in: This is so hard! Harry Potter, Star Wars, and maybe the Marvel universe?

Notable Notes:
This production won the 2011 “Best New Work” award from BroadwayWorld’s Chicago theatre awards
Starship is Starkid’s first show that they produced independently from the University of Michigan! The show opened in Chicago, where the following few shows were produced before a majority of the most active members moved to Los Angeles prior to The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, which opened in 2018
StarKid had their own short segment on MTV that highlighted certain aspects of the production such as Criss’ music and the puppetry (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlnIXIGrjVg). At that point in time, Darren Criss was already a television favorite due to his role as Blaine Anderson on Glee, who joined the cast during its second season
The show’s cast album debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top Cast Albums within three days of its release and at the 134th spot during that week’s Billboard’s Top 200 chart (x)
The opening sequence features cameos from other StarKid members such as Chris Allen, Tyler Brunsman, Richard Campbell, Britney Coleman, Arielle Goldman, Devin Lytle, Lily Marks, Nicholas Joseph Strauss-Matathia, and Brian Rosenthal. The same sequence was narrated by actor Bob Joles (AKA Man Ray in Spongebob Squarepants)
***Fun Facts provided by Abby:
Nick and Dylan think the worst StarKid song is ‘Hideous Creatures’
During a rehearsal, Joey told Nick that he thought the choreography for ‘Beauty’ was boring. Then Nick asked him, “Do you want to choreograph the number?" and then walked out of the room.
There was a theoretical sequel to Starship in which Taz and Up arrest Spaceclaw but get injured by an explosion. Up ends up in the hospital because of his injuries, and while Taz waits for him to heal, she has flashbacks of when they first met and the missions they went on together (Taz’s quinceañera, etc.)
Lauren: I'd like to imagine that Taz has that same hairstyle just in a big quinceañera dress
Once during rehearsal, they were all in a bad mood during ‘Beauty’. Darren wanted to surprise the cast with a visit, so he burst into the theatre singing the song and was just met by silence
At LeakyCon 2014 on Orlando, StarKid were invited as guests and performed a staged reading of a one-act sequel to Starship called Starship: Requiem.
Official synopsis: The story follows the adventures of Mega-Girl the robot and her half-witted Starship Ranger husband. The newlyweds are sucked into a black hole of trouble when they go to visit Mega-Girl’s human-hating family, including her overbearing mother-unit, her jealous sister-unit and the return of her hunky ex-boyfriend-unit. (x)
Cultural Context: 2011
The production’s MTV segment aired a little over a week after Glee’s “Original Song” episode, which featured Kurt and Blaine’s long-awaited first kiss [rip Pavarotti]
Prince William and Kate Middleton get married
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 premieres on July 15th
Beyoncé announces her pregnancy during her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards
“Friday” by Rebecca Black gets released in March
In early May, President Obama announces that Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces
New York becomes the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage on June 24th
The 9/11 Memorial Museum opens to the public on the tenth anniversary of the attacks
Content Analysis:
During my time on social media, I have found that Starship is one of the StarKid shows that gets discussed the least. Up until the show’s debut in StarKid’s history, the only shows they’ve done were AVPM and AVPS, both major viral hits, and MAMD, which reached popularity partly because it was released after StarKid became known for AVPM. Coming off of their great and unexpected successes with these productions, one would think that there would be a bigger fandom for Starship. It’s their second show that is based on original content rather than being a parody, and the production quality is the strongest in their repertoire, considering the funds they gained from their album sales for MAMD and their growing merchandise sales for their Potter musical series.
Personally, it’s one of my favorite StarKid shows because of the production quality and because the performances are so strong. Joey Richter makes a perfect leading man, and seeing how his general abilities as a performer have grown since MAMD has been delightful. His vocal range got stronger and more pronounced and he has a very confident stage presence, especially since Starship was StarKid’s first production independent of the University of Michigan’s monetary assistance and performance space. Lauren Lopez and Dylan Saunders do such an incredible job at playing two completely different characters themselves within the same show. Saunders plays Tootsie Noodles, a lovable idiot with a heart of gold who falls in love with a robot of all things, while also playing Pincer, the villainous instigator of the plot. Lopez has a similar about-face in character portrayal. She plays Buggette, a bug who’s in a helpless one-sided romantic relationship with Bug, and then two seconds later Lopez transforms into Taz, a kickass Latina Starship Ranger with excellent comedic presence and the undisputed leader of the group before Up regains his confidence as commander.
Starship is very unique in that about half of the characters in the show are portrayed by puppets, which themselves are incredibly designed, but unlike other productions that use puppets, they do not detract from the actor’s performance of the character. StarKid did a very good job in ensuring that the puppets are not a gimmick, but rather a compliment, to their individual actor’s portrayal of the character. All actors who play puppet roles do such a great job of vocalizing their character that, despite the design of the puppet not having the ability to change facial features, make the puppets feel so alive that it’s almost like watching a live-action animated movie (the good kind we’ve yet to experience, not the Disney kind). If there is any one thing that Starship represents for the company as a whole, it’s that character creation and embodiment make up the heartblood of the performances. Aside from the vocal performances, the facial expressions and physicality of the performances add so much to the puppetry performances, even when the focus on the character isn’t their physical representation but their dialogue and place in the plot. Regardless of whether or not the recording is emphasizing the puppet itself during a scene, the actor controlling the puppet is using perfect facial expressions and has matching body language with the puppet, which not only helps the actor stay in character, but gives more life to the puppet itself.
While I am eternally grateful that StarKid to this day ensures that their musical productions are put on YouTube for free, there are two very clear downsides that make themselves especially present in the recording. One is that, unlike in live theatre where any audience member can choose who and what to look at onstage at any given time, the camera is the one dictating what each audience member can focus on. Generally speaking, that isn’t too much of a detriment as most of the shots StarKid uses tend to showcase the most important characters during each scene, which any audience member would do if they were to attend a production live, but because StarKid members are so adept at character performance, it really makes me wish that I can look more at the ensemble’s performances during group scenes, or secondary character’s reactions during smaller scenes in which their character may not be the main focus.
Another thing was the general editing style. Though it did not necessarily take away anything from the performance itself or make watching the recording any less enjoyable, there were some editing choices that I felt were too distracting for what the scene called for in the show. For example, when Crayonder mentions to Taz that he thinks that Commander Up has “gone soft” since the injury he sustained in the Robot War, twice does the camera pause on his face and a record scratch and ‘booooo’ track is heard overlaid onto the scene. I understand the comedic nature of that bit in retrospect, but for a viewer, regardless of whether or not they are watching the show for the first time, it’s very distracting and forcibly shifts the audience’s focus on the story and the characters to a one-off joke. For a first-time viewer, that editing choice especially does not have as much impact as it does for a recurring viewer, as at that point in the story, the audience is only just being introduced to the characters and has no personal connection to Up and his backstory, making the effect of the joke less successful. As well, throughout the recording, and during the first act in particular, the show has a lot of quick and experimental cuts in the frame that I feel don’t allow the audience to sit enough with the action and the performance happening onstage, instead making the audience pay more attention to quick facial gestures rather than allowing the audience to take in the performance of an individual actor or an entire scene as a whole. Overall, the editing just reminds me that I am watching this beautifully done live-performance through a screen rather than being there for the performance in person, and lessens the potential impact of the recording as a whole.
Regardless of the editing, Starship still has some of the best character performances and musical numbers in StarKid’s production history. One that really stood out for me during this rewatch was Denise Donovan’s portrayal of February. Her character gets introduced as a classic ditzy character who initially doesn’t have a lot of agency in the story, but through good writing and likable performance, grows into the most sympathetic and dynamic character in the show. Donovan’s performance makes February more human than the trope she represents, and plays off her character so well that her jokes make her more endearing than a throw-away character that’s used just for laughs and a love-interest. Starkid tends to do this with a lot of the trope-y roles that they write for their productions . The writing and the direction have a very unique way of taking seemingly predictable, one-dimensional characters and fleshing them out into entire human beings with backstories and arcs, making their comedic impact all the more enjoyable because the audience genuinely likes them.

ship history meme
Embrace your past and get to know your friends’ fandom origins!
Rules: Post gifs of your fandoms / ships starting with your most current hyperfixation and work backwards. (Bonus points if you share any stories about how or when you got into that ship! But not necessary!!) Then tag anyone whose fandom history you’d like to learn about!
Tagged by the most gorgeous, smartest, sweetest, and kindest person in my life @sightetsound <3 Sorry y’all, I have a lot of hyperfixations and I’m on NyQuil!
Tumblr media
1. Katsuki Bakugo and Eijiro Kirishima, My Hero Academia - I literally can’t watch Season 4 until it’s finished because my heart will Explode if I’m left on a cliffhanger involving these too!!! (Unbreakable T.T <3) I don’t usually like animes but I fell in love with his trash bastard and his soft rock boyfriend by the villain’s attack in S1. It all started when I got a TikTok because a Very Hot Bakugo cosplayer was on there. (Literally, their rendition of Bakugo is just, umph. They have appeared in my dream.). As she got more popular he started cosplaying more of Class 1-A of MHA, and I kept wondering?? What the fuck is this anime about?? Why is there an alien girl?? I soon gave in and watched the show to gain context to this thirst trap. I have so many feels for these boys, even though I don’t post on them much here, and T.T
Tumblr media
2. Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane, Shadowhunters - I literally almost wrote my thesis because of this ship. I got into Shadowhunters because I was depressed in a foreign, racist country where I couldn’t go outside alone because old white men would corner me on the street, and everyone was talking about how Mike from Glee was kissing a guy at a wedding? Instead of partying during my study abroad trip, I gobbled down Malec content. And like who wouldn’t?? Harry Shum Jr. was playing a bisexual warlock?? And he had lines and a main character role??? An interracial couple where the characters are both POC?? Sign me up! But then I quickly fell in love with awkward gayby Alec and immediately knew how it felt to be in his shoes. (Disclaimer: I still haven’t finished the show because I don’t want their story to end, but just seeing their wedding scene????? Tears!!!!!!!!!! Both wedding scenes! I-) I just love how soft they look at each as they realize how lucky they are to be able to fall in love against the odds. T.T They deserve the world and all the warlock and shadowhunter babies and T.T This is just going to devolve into me crying so-
Tumblr media
3. Stiles Stilinski and Derek Hale, Teen Wolf - I got into Teen Wolf to escape the hellfire that had become the Glee fandom around S3-S4. (Tbh it might have been Dereklei’s constant Sterek content on my dash that led me to give in.) Stiles was bi (through subtext) and definitely turned on by an older werewolf. What more could a depressed Gleek ask for? And listen - now looking back, Sterek is definitely gay Twilight - if Bella was snarkier, had a mental illness, and also a personality. Sterek was the ship to get me back into writing fanfiction and where I could read paranormal characters working through PTSD, ADHD, and other mental illnesses while fighting monsters and having unrealistic sex! I also love those future fics where Beacon Hills isn’t a Hellmouth anymore, and everyone’s alive and just living as one big found family. Truly, Derek deserves the world and I love him so much, and Stiles definitely agrees.
Tumblr media
4. Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles, One Direction - If it’s a surprise that I’m a dark larrie, please read my bio. HL made me believe that love is real and exists and can last for years. I got into One Direction in 2011 through a Lilo fanfic, but as soon as I watched the Video Diaries,,,we knew. Louis has saved my life in ways I can’t describe and the songs that they’ve written for each other through their tough times are so inspiring to listen and dance to. Seeing how they’ve been dragged apart by management, Sony Entertainment, and the whole music industry as a whole even though they exist in glass closets is very disheartening to see. But their resilience that they show through their art (Only the Brave, Sweet Creature, If I Could Fly, and like so many others) is always there. If you want to fall in this rabbit hole, look at freddieismyqueen on YT and come inside lol. Larry is real.
Tumblr media
5. Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson, Glee - the ship that got me on Tumblr! I didn’t start watching Glee until the summer before S2 came out. My whole choir was into it and I didn’t want to be “mainstream”, but Kurt was the first openly gay teen character that I saw on TV. When I heard a character played by Darren Criss, a musical theater YT legend from AVPM, I had to watch it. I ended up binging the first season with those Netflix DVDs during summer break (yeah remember when Netflix wasn’t streaming? lol). I watched every episode of that god-forsaken show the night of (or night after illegally, hidden from my parents) for that ship, and then me and my best friend would rant about it for the whole week: rinse and repeat. The episode they got together made me scream and I definitely put those Glee Rewind songs in my iPhone. (Fun fact: I used to cry at night because I wished someone like Kurt could love me like that because I heavily related to Blaine and his whole situation). I naturally stopped watching Glee the moment they broke them up and I’m still mad at their hasty attempt to marry them out of nowhere with no well-written getting together / make-up arc other than Jigsaw?? and a barn wedding?? As if Hummel would. What a trash fire. But dang, Glee fanfics have some of the dirtiest, kinkiest, forbidden fics out there. If you were ever on Glee_Kink_Meme on LJ, you know.
Tumblr media
6. Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter - the ship that started it all, the big kahuna, the ultimate enemies to lovers for 90s kids. Drarry got me into the fandom world in middle school, where I basically lived on FFN and LJ while pretending to do my homework. I used to get ready every day by watching the same playlist of “The best Harry Potter videos on Youtube!” (curated by Ariel333Lindt, who was the only queer person I knew but lived in Eastern Europe, where I could see two gay people kiss and fall in love in the safety of my room through badly photoshopped videos. Please check out that playlist). I just love how each fic is a microcosm where they have to construct how magical systems work, the backstories of pureblood families, creatures, or just wizarding culture for the end goal of having Drarry fuck and fall in love! I love redemption arcs that take 200k to achieve, I love dark!Harry takes, and every single different damn take on Narcissa, Pansy, and Millicent - because deep down that’s the writer trying to come to turns on whether or not Draco should be redeemed to get together with Harry. (I mean we all know they’re obsessed with each other, book 6 anyone?) I feel like Drarry fics have the best worldbuilding and characterizations of these characters, and I just love those moments when Draco and Harry take a moment to take a breath together and realize how far they’ve come. No one else can understand how it felt to be the pariah or the chosen one, they both interacted with Voldemort the most, and they have the most history together. They should have gotten together! But I mean the author’s dead, am I right?
So that was a lot! Those are all the ships that impacted me that I still participate with. They have shaped me for better or worse, and have made me learn more about who I am and what I want (or don’t want) in a relationship. This was the most fun essay I’ve ever written on NyQuil!
I’m tagging @homosociallyyours because I really want to know your fandom story! Also @stozierbrak because I love you and must hear you gush about your boys. I’m also tagging @iamaqualady because you’re literally the most intriguing person I know and I’m glad we’re friends even though we haven’t interacted that much? ish?

Debunking ahead: Tinhats historically believe Darren was FreePavarotti (mleigh69*tumblr*com/post/126280604185/why-do-people-think-darren-is-free-pavarotti). He isn't. Dominic Tracy (nee Barnes) stated the account was owned by a fan in Boston (www*masslive*com/television/2011/03/glee_exclusive_dominic_barnes*html) which was followed-up by an interview with with said Boston fan who owns it (www*masslive*com/television/2011/03/glee_exclusive_mr_boston_speak*html). As usual, tinhats bleat it was PR.
Ooohhh I love this....this is tooo delicious.

akf-ighting asked:Why do people think Darren is Free Pavarotti?
@mleight69:
There are quite a few reasons - some screen captured - others not
but all seem to lead to the same conclusion - despite PR attempts to “prove” it otherwise
the truth is hard to hide when it doesn’t want to be hidden
Tumblr media
This was a fun exchange that pav jumped in on:
Tumblr media
THIS ONE IS A PERSONAL FAVORITE:
Tumblr media
if the above doesn’t scream Darren’s voice to you - nothing will.
And there was a third tweet from a female friend (can’t recall who) who told him to watch which account he was tweeting from and called him “birdbrain”
This was an interesting post:
on December 10th, there were three consecutive tweets. I have all three in my phone saved. 11:10: @DarrenCriss I was gonna hop in the shower but then I decided to do jumping jacks in there instead. and then at 11:15: @DarrenCriss I was gonna hop in a cab but I realized there was no room in there for it. Plus I had nowhere to go. Sorry cab driver please let me out. and THEN, at 11:21: @FreePavarotti I was gonna hop to it but decided to walk instead. 3 MPH. So, basically, Darren mixed up accounts. (Tweets from FreePavarotti generally have #FreePav at the end.) The tweet was promptly deleted, so very few people have proof that it happened, but I do. it proved that Darren runs @FreePavarotti. LINK
I have seen screencaps of the tweet that Pav sent out the night of Chris’ 21st bad when they were on tour
Pav was drunk - or acting drunk - both are possible - the tweet was deleted
like the others that pointed too specifically to who was in charge of the account
I believe it is both Chris and Darren - but mostly Darren
The timing of events and information known - a lot not possible without some inside info
Many are in Darren’s playful and mischievous voice (with a possible assist from Chris at many)
And honestly - WHY would anyone work so hard to cover up something that was just a random fan having fun?!   LINK
Another incidence of PR overkill - that only proves the opposite to be true -they seem to have mastered this maneuver - don’t you think?!
Free pav continues to favorite things time and again
and frequently they are INTERESTING choices for sure!
Choose for yourself - but coincidences are only coincidences SO MANY TIMES
time will tell

'Glee' exclusive: Mr. Boston speaks about FreePavarotti Twitter
 Updated Mar 25, 2019; Posted Mar 31, 2011 Comment0sharesBy
Samantha Stephens, The Republican
Who would have thought that a bird could cause such a commotion?Pavarotti might have only appeared on a couple episodes of Glee but Kurt Hummel's (Chris Colfer) pet warbler stole the attention and devotion of thousands of Glee fans.
With a popular Twitter account, which currently has 9,483 followers, Pavarotti kept fans entertained with witty status updates about his caretaker, the Warblers, Kurt's budding relationship with Blaine (Darren Criss), and his own budding romance with Warbler Luke Edgemon.
As the account became popular, speculation over who ran the account swept the internet. Most fans agreed that it had to be a member of the Glee cast. But disparities on whether the account was operated by a Warbler, Darren Criss, or a joint-effort was a topic of debate for many.
When I started what I referred to as my “Wild Warbler Week”, in which I had the pleasure of chatting with three of the Warbler boys, I decided to try to get to the bottom of this mystery.
I was prepared to listen to the standard "he's a bird!" reply that had always been given when anyone attempted to solve this conundrum. But, lo and behold, I received the information on the first attempt thanks to Dominic Barnes.
We may never know the mysterious Mr. Boston’s true identity, he refused to answer any personal questions, but he offered an exclusive interview in which he revealed some of the magic (or should I say glitter?) behind the famous Twitter account.
When did you start the account? Where did the idea come from? The account began on December 1, 2010. It was the day after Pavarotti appeared on the show, I think. I started watching Glee when the Warblers first appeared, which was a couple weeks prior. I've done joke Twitters before in a different context, and it was a lot of fun. The initial idea was to start a campaign to "free Pavarotti", hence the username, while retweeting information about the Beelzebubs and bullying, to keep it in context. When I started tweeting, though, doing the character seemed like a more fun, accessible way to put that stuff out there.
Where did you get the ideas for the status updates? Do you have a favorite status or one that is particularly memorable? I had two different characters in mind for Pavarotti; one was the actor, an actual bird on set, totally infatuated with his own success and enamored with his fellow Warblers. He's the one who actually acts like a bird. The other was the bird in the show. That Pavarotti was meant to be a little more like a miniature Kurt; he overplays the "gay", gets excited about hanging out with Blaine, loves to sing to himself, and pretends to be well-educated about things like fashion, history, and music, while in reality he's just tossing his sassy feathers around, saying please, look at me, don't let me get lost, I'm bright yellow, I want to be important! Ha ha.
The other factor in updating the Twitter was relevancy; What's a hot topic in the world (Libya; Japan)?, Is there something I can do to stick with the gay/bullying theme (Trevor Project; transgender boy actor bird; It Gets Better)?, and What's up with my caretakers and how can I redirect some followers to them (Warblers; Bubs; Glee)?
I don't think I have a favorite. There are over 800 tweets on the account, you know! Every time I got to say "I'm not Someone Famous, because I'm a bird," that was awesome. Bird puns, too. Bird titles. Bird anything, really.
Did you ever expect it to become such a phenomenon within the Glee fandom? Not in a million years! I didn't even expect it to catch the eye of people in the show - and while I made some fun tweets, Pavarotti's popularity is due entirely to the Warblers & co. If it weren't for some of the guys being great sports, playing along, and pretending that Pavarotti was the real bird they worked with, this conversation we're having would be even more absurd. The Darren Criss conspiracy theory is also to blame.
Could you elaborate on the Darren Criss conspiracy for people who might not be familiar with it? I once dueled a tiger upon the harsh wastelands of Kentucky, but as soon as I managed to subdue this creature, it tweeted that I was actually Darren Criss to the World Wide Web. Its approximately three and a half million followers were fooled instantly and a thousand of them became personally invested. In order to preserve my secret identity and continue to oppose Professor Zoom and Magneto in their dastardly schemes, I played along until the time was rife to take revenge.
You said you had two ideas for how to maintain the Pavarotti Twitter, how did you decide between the two ideas? I used both Pavarotti - the bird and the actor. Some people picked up on this right away. It's not necessary in order to read it, though. The plan to use it as a "freedom campaign" was nixed almost immediately, because doing the character tweets was too much fun. And also because I couldn't come up with a neat little logo to save my life.
A huge part of the Twitter account was dedicated to the relationship between Luke Edgemon and Pavarotti. How did that get started and will you and Luke remain in touch? Luke was the first Warbler to tweet at FreePavarotti as though he were the real deal - he said "Pleasure working with you today!" and that was the beginning of my credibility. The romantic tweets just happened. Truly the age-old story of a canary and a boy falling in love. We will! At least, I hope so. We still text through private messages.
Pav had a lot of status updates about "Klaine" - do you think he's smiling from Bird Heaven now that they're finally (unofficially) together? What are your personal opinions on that storyline? I think Pavarotti loved both of the boys, as well as the rest of the Warblers. He did his best to chirp it up with Kurt, and Blaine was a real pal. I don't think he would have much of an opinion on the relationship itself, aside from what it does to Blaine and the Pips' set-list. Personally, it's important to have a gay relationship on primetime T.V., even if it's as silly as any other hookup on Glee. The "Brittana" excites me more, to be honest! People need to see that - LGBT intolerance is heading the way of dodo birds, shell suits, and separate drinking fountains, so we better darn well get a more and more positive presence in the media with each passing day.
Who has a stronger love: Pav and Luke or Kurt and Blaine? Love is the most powerful force in the universe; it's not a spectator sport. Be careful with that!
You mentioned one of the themes you wanted to touch upon with the Pav account was the bullying issue. What are your thoughts about the Kurt/Karofsky storyline and the possibility for Karosky's redemption? I'm not really qualified to talk about this! But here goes: I do like to think that anyone can find redemption, especially somebody who's lost and lashing out like Karofsky. The locker room kiss scene turns my stomach, and getting Kurt out of that entire environment was definitely the right thing to do. I'm sure Karofsky will "see the light", for lack of a better term. It's been set since that Superbowl number. I just don't know how much divine vengeance is too much - his remorse alone isn't really enough to make up for what he's done, but taking a crowbar to the guy's head would be overkill! Glee will, with any luck, find a happy medium and a happy ending for him. He and guys like him could use a little hope.
How difficult has it been to keep the secret, especially when so many people assumed the account was run by a Warbler or member of the cast? A fair number of folks on the human plane have known about the account from the start. I'm grateful that none of them have spoiled the fun. I   experience a mixture of guilt and glee when accused of being a member of the cast; I figured if anybody in the inner sanctum of Glee minded, I'd get in trouble, or someone would clear the air, so I'm guessing anybody on Glee who's heard of me gets just as much satisfaction out of toying with the emotions of Twitter as I do. Splendid. I don't need these five minutes of fame attached to my face; having this game on the internet was fun enough.
What did you think the reaction would be when it was revealed that you weren't a member of the Glee cast? I was surprised that the Warblers were surprised - I thought they were all just playing along! I figured Darren Criss would laugh to himself. You know, everybody's different - I knew some people would be disappointed, some people would be really amused, and some would still insist I'm a member of the cast.
Do you keep in touch with anyone from the cast of Glee? I could just tell you "no," but that's not very mysterious. I have a feeling folks would be skeptical, too. How about...my buddies are my secret, and the poor cast of Glee and I can continue to try to live our lives as ordinary people, connection or no connection.
Were you a fan of the show before you started the Twitter? If so, what was your favorite episode or cover? Nope! I'd never seen it before the Warblers appeared. But since then I've ended up with the box set of the first season, and I've seen some of it. I loved the episode with the mattress commercial. I like Teenage Dream a lot. I also liked Forget You and Vogue.
Who is your favorite Glee character? Puck. He appeals to my sensibilities. He's a cool dude with a lot to prove. He gets some great lines. He's just great. He can be both a bully and a kicked puppy.
When and how did you find out that Pav was going to die in "Original Songs"? I found out when people started tweeting me asking if it was true. That's how I learned a lot of things; I don't read the news blogs, and I don't really talk to people on the inside - well, I wouldn't be so rude as to ask for deets on spoilers all the time if I did, although I shot off a couple of excited messages to Warblers when I discovered "my" days were numbered. I toyed with the hearts of my followers, and as soon as I was informed that the death was actually going to happen, I began to plot my own demise.
On Glee, Kurt assumes Pavarotti dies from a stroke. Is that what really happened? How did you decide what the final tweet would be? Pavarotti either died of a stroke or of a glitter overdose. There was no time for an autopsy, in between singing and making out, so the world may never know. I had the final few days' worth of tweets saved on my phone weeks in advance. Pavarotti died while chirping out a tune; that's the way he wanted to live, so that's the way he had to go. The song seemed relevant.
Do you approve of the bedazzled coffin Pav was laid to rest in? It's beautiful. A glittery little box for his glittery little spirit.
There was about a week between Pav's death and the funeral. Where was he hanging out in the meantime? Kurt probably kept him in a well-decorated mini-fridge. Or maybe they used a slingshot to send him out into space at relativistic speed, so that he'd land back on Earth without decaying too much.Assuming that's where Pav is, what's Bird Heaven like?I'm not dead or a bird, so I couldn't tell you!
Are you or will you troll again? I'm glad that someone detailed for me exactly what the parameters of trolling are last night.I have had other Twitter accounts in the past; none taken as seriously as this one, and nowhere near the follower account this one generated. I have a new joke character Twitter account going, with a smaller following and a more casually fun tweeting schedule. It has been mistaken as an official Twitter in its franchise once or twice, too, but that impression was almost immediately dispelled by the followers and context. I don't plan on ever publicly linking them to each other, or my future endeavors.
Is the new Twitter account Glee, Darren Criss, or Starkid related? How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? (X)

Darren Criss not only completed his awards sweep at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” but he’s now the youngest winner ever in the limited series/TV movie actor category.
Criss, who turns 32 on Feb. 5, is the first person to win the award in his 30s and is nine years younger than the former record holder, Gary Sinise, who was 40 at the time of his victory for “Truman” in 1996. Sinise won a second statuette two years later for “George Wallace” and is twice in the top five youngest champs of all time.
Like the corresponding Emmy and Golden Globe categories, older actors rule this SAG Awards winners roll call, but the former two groups have given their awards to younger men. Criss is the second youngest Emmy champ behind Anthony Murphy (“Tom Brown’s Schooldays”), who was 17 at the 1973 Emmys, and is the third youngest Globe winner behind James Franco, who was 23 when he won for “James Dean” in 2002, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who was 28 during his victory for “Elvis” in 2006.
Criss, who was the predicted winner in our odds, was the youngest nominee by far in this race, up against 58-year-old Antonio Banderas (“Genius: Picasso”), 58-year-old Hugh Grant (“A Very English Scandal”), 81-year-old Anthony Hopkins (“King Lear”) and 64-year-old Bill Pullman (“The Sinner”) — all veterans that SAG voters typically go for. But he had enough heat with his Emmy, Globe and Critics’ Choice wins to overcome any age bias that may have been there.
See the SAG Awards’ winners for limited series/TV movie actor from youngest to oldest below.
1. Darren Criss, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” (2019): 31

The Bryan Awards - The Best of the Last Decade (The 2010s)
With only two weeks left in the decade, I took a thorough look back at the last ten Bryan Awards (with the last nine of them being recorded as annual podcasts for WCRS FM), and picked the Best of the Best since the 2010 Bryan Awards (or programs that aired since January 1, 2010, and airing up until the cut-off for this September’s Bryan Awards, which was May 31, which would eliminate the likes of Mrs. Fletcher, Season 2 of Big Little Lies, plus newbies like On Becoming A God in Central Florida, Perfect Harmony, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and this week’s A Christmas Carol).
Here are the Guidelines Chosen for both this and the Silver Garbage Awards Worst of the Decade: - Eligibility Period is January 1, 2010 to May 31, 2019. - Glee is being entered for New Series of the Decade, because it won the 2010 Bryan Award in that race, despite it debuted in 2009. - Younger Acting will be merged through the genres: Daytime, Comedy, Drama, and Limited Series.  And if an actor turned 26 doesn't really matter, as long as 50% of their nominations were before they were 26. - Big Little Lies (Season 1), Orange Is the New Black, and Downton Abbey are Dramas.  Shameless is a Comedy.  True Detective is a Longform, as is American Horror Story, and ALL seasons will be lumped into one for Anthology Stories. - Sherlock and Sharknado are being entered for ALL of their movies, ditto for Black Mirror episodes, in the Longform races. - There will be separate Lead and Supporting Acting races for Comedy and Drama Bryan Awards, but NOT for Silver Garbage. Apologies for the Length of this Post, but without further ado...

In a brilliant moment of serendipity, Darren Criss discovered he had been Emmy-nominated as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for The Assassination of Gianni Versace at an airport branch of Planet Hollywood. “We were sitting there looking at the most Hollywood thing we could. That just tickled me to no end,” regales the former Glee star, who played Kurt Hummel’s love interest, Blaine Anderson, in the musical comedy television show.
At the time, Darren was on his way to a gig in Aspen, Colorado. “The Emmy nominations were coming out at 8.30am and the flight was leaving at 9.45am and we – me, my fiancée, my manager, publicist, basically the work family – all wanted to go and watch it together, somewhere I would be close enough so that when it was announced I could run over to the gate.”
The punchline came while sitting there waiting for the nominations to be revealed: his Glee version of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” also started to play on the speakers. Looking around to see if perhaps one of the servers had clocked him and was being “cute”, because it was quite a bizarre coincidence, he realised that nope, “this is 8.30am in the international terminal and nobody gives a shit about my version of ‘Teenage Dream’,” he laughs. “But we just couldn’t fucking believe it, like what a crazy auspicious moment! But it was a nice little story.”
By now, it’s one that will have its ending fully wrapped up: the Emmys took place on September 17 in LA, which is where Darren is now on the other end of the phone. For context, it’s one of those intensely hot end-of-July days that everyone in London is complaining about. For Darren it’s a day of playing “Mr Octopus” as he puts it. “Today is insane. When you have ‘free time’, it’s actually more hectic because in the absence of stuff that you’re obligated to do you immediately see everything you’ve neglected a lot more clearly.”
In his perky twang, he gives me “the shorthand” of this: Elsie Fest to organise for autumn, the New York show-tune themed festival he founded; music to work on for Computer Games, the band he started with his brother; marketing for the new piano bar he and his fiancée, Mia Swier, have opened; projects he can’t talk about but is excited about; a wedding to plan “at some point” next year; work on the house; and that general life admin that creeps up on all of us. “Hey, we all got stuff,” he chimes.
And among all of this, he casually slips in: “I’m also reading scripts and trying to get another acting job if I can get one.” Which can’t help but make me laugh. If he can get one? Because, let’s be honest, regardless of the Emmys outcome (a big congratulations if you bagged it and if not, you were robbed!), his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan, as well as a stellar career to date (he replaced Daniel Radcliffe in How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on Broadway to great success, is the mind behind A Very Potter Musicaland has starred in Hedwig and the Angry Inch), shouldn’t make that too hard. But it’s “cute” – as he would say – to know he doesn’t rest on his laurels.
Darren was terrifying and intriguing in his role as Cunanan, the serial killer who murdered four men before ending his violent spree with fashion designer Gianni Versace in FX’s American Crime Story retelling of the real-life event in Miami in 1997. When it aired earlier this year, I didn’t know anyone who wasn’t watching it. If you weren’t binge-streaming it, you were glued to BBC2 desperate for next week’s instalment to watch the unfolding plot of a story that in many ways is little known, certainly on the Cunanan front.
“A lot of it is pretty shrouded in mystery. There are two groups of people who have been particularly aware of the Cunanan story. Filipinos in my life all know someone who knew him,” says Darren, who, hailing from San Francisco, is also half Filipino, as was Cunanan. “And true crime addicts.” “The story itself, which is endlessly fascinating, is not only interesting but has significant social weight and things to be discussed and topics that I think are important. It goes on and on and on,” he enthuses. “The role is incredibly nuanced and varied and complex, which is something that actors wake up in the morning for.”
Where the first series spotlights The People v. OJ Simpson, a trial that arguably most people in the world – certainly in the US – are familiar with, the Versace murder, while shocking and awful (the designer himself being a significant cultural icon and his death a huge loss to the fashion industry) lent itself to more questions than answers. Which from Darren’s point of view gave him a certain amount of free rein. “You’re not stacked against people’s expectations of an impersonation of somebody. I think that helped audiences; it really gave me and our story a blank slate.”
It’s true. As a viewer, I couldn’t help but find my feelings and point of view change as the narrative revealed Cunanan’s own backstory. “That, to me, is the most heartening thing; that’s the most encouraging thing you could say – that’s the goal.”
His performance has been described as career-defining but it’s not the first time he’s had such an accolade aimed in his direction. Yet you can’t help but think that this one, Emmy nomination aside, might just be the one to carry a little more weight, such was the grit and darkness that came with it and played out by someone we’re more used to associating with the tween spark of Glee.
It seems, therefore, an apt time to ask what his fantasy role would be. “Oh man. I have a pretty wild imagination but I’d like to think that my brain isn’t good enough to imagine the part I’d want,” he says. “And, also, fantasies evolve throughout your life based on whatever situation you find yourself in.” American Crime Story, certainly, he says is the kind of role he’d been working and waiting his whole life to play – which is not to say he dreamt of being a serial killer! “Let’s keep turning left, turning hard rights and hard lefts as much as possible, as long as the story is good. The name of the game for me is variety and versatility. If every time I do a role we have people say that’s a real departure from the last thing that would be awesome.”
Darren got the acting bug – or “storytelling” bug as he prefers to call it – at a young age. He was a child at the heart of the Disney Renaissance era and Robin Williams lived locally in his native San Francisco. One day, when seeing Aladdin at the cinema (“I can’t even tell you how many times I went to go see it,”) and realising that the Genie was voiced by Williams, his eureka moment came.
“You know when you’re a kid and you have dreams of being something and they seem kind of far off from you unless there’s somebody you can see do it?” he offers. “I remember very distinctly watching this Genie bring so much joy to the people around me… and I wanted in on that, I wanted to be the Genie. But once you realise you can’t necessarily do that and I found out the voice of the genie was Robin Williams, I was like that’s the guy, that’s the famous guy that lives in our city! I can do that and so he was really a massive inspiration for me.”
So, too, was Peter Coyote, another San Francisco-based actor, whom Darren in fact cold-called to find out what he should do to be an actor. He subsequently enrolled at the American Conservatory Theater’s Young Conservatory Programme before studying drama at college. A keen violinist, music and acting had always worked in constant tandem. “So that’s why it’s so hilarious to me that by the time I got Glee I’d already been doing this my whole life,” he says.
At the time of the Gianni Versace murder, Darren was 10 years old. “I did [remember it] in a sort of vague sense of pop cultural event. Obviously, Versace is a massive international figure so I was aware that he was murdered.” It wasn’t until much later in 2011, when his Hollywood lifestyle led him to the world of high fashion, that the dots joined.
“We were on tour for Glee and I popped down to Milan to go to this Versace fashion show, which was an amazing event and you’re there with Donatella and there in the house, the estate of the Versace family.” On a tour of it, Darren recalls seeing beautiful home pieces and fashion works. “There were a lot of things from his personal collection and [the steward] of course was saying ‘Well this was made after Gianni’s murder in 1997.’ It codified in my brain. He was taken away a little too early.”
For ACS producer Ryan Murphy, it was Darren who codified in the brain. The Glee co-creator had long had him in mind for the part. “People like Ryan have had their eye on the Cunanan story for a long time and we had worked closely in a few capacities.” Darren just had to play the waiting game. “I honestly said just let me know when you want to do this because obviously it would be a huge opportunity for me and I think it would be an incredible story but I don’t really have the keys for that car, man. You’re the driver, let me know when you want to pick me up!” Three years later and that proverbial beep came.
In real life, Darren has to be one of the most modest and upbeat people, armed with an always-look-on-the-bright-side-of-life attitude. You imagine he’s not all that good at sitting still, hence his potentially self-inflicted to-do list, which you also get the feeling is built from passion not pain. “I just feel so grateful at every turn of my career; if you’re able to do anything and that there’s any definition at all is a huge win so I’ll take it where I can get it,” he says referring to the praise he’s received in playing Cunanan, one he’s also quick to bring back down to earth with a very grounding analogy. “Every moment of your life is defining. The fact that I decided to have granola this morning defines the rest of the way my digestive system works…” he laughs. He has quite the way with words.
This too is helpful in a Hollywood landscape right now that, post-Weinstein and post-Trump, has found itself in troubling times. “What a big, big topic,” he begins. “It’s the Wild West right now, truly, there are so many things that I think it’s not necessarily Hollywood figuring itself out, it’s our whole society figuring it out as represented by Hollywood. It kind of gets the brunt of it because of its exposure and its influence,” he explains. “There are a lot of good things happening in it for people who have been marginalised and we’re setting new standards for ourselves that we should have set a long time ago, and in that sense it’s really good. But there are unfortunately other things that are happening where it’s hard to draw the line of what’s right and wrong and a lot of questions are being asked that we’ve never asked ourselves before about what’s appropriate.”
Social media, too, he thinks plays a significant role, moving faster than we are able to keep up with. “There’s a lot of things that are falling by the wayside as a result of that. I’m making very vague comments but yeah it’s very tricky,” he concludes before diplomatically topic-shifting to his own lack of social media usage. Firstly, because he’s a private person. And secondly, unlike so many people, he does realise the responsibility that comes with publishing a post. “Even when Twitter started and people would post joke-stuff and I would say ‘Woah, woah, that’s out there forever, are you sure? I think you think only I’m seeing this,’.” He says he’s always been uneasy with the idea of this kind of ‘stuff’ existing in perpetuity.
Which means that the answer to the next question requires some serious thought. Who would make for his fantasy dinner party guests? British comedian Eddie Izzard (because Darren is a big Anglophile); if we could roll back time, Sammy Davis Jr, “who the world knows as a great entertainer but he was also an insane dancer and musician”; Nat King Cole for the same reasons; and, his number one choice, Howard Ashman, the lyricist and dramaturge behind the previously mentioned Disney renaissance (aka Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast). “I’ve always admired his craftsmanship and he’s someone I’ve always thought, if I had a dinner, I’d really like to have a chat with. All of my heroes are the people who were hyphenates,” says Darren, which makes sense because he’s just the same. One small suggestion: hold the fantasy dinner party at Planet Hollywood. That would make a nice story.

Emmy Award-winning performanceCriss did a fair amount of exploring across San Diego County, including in National City, where the teen-aged Waits worked at Napoleone's  Pizza House back in the 1960s.Criss’ time here was in preparation for his role last year as San Diego-bred murderer Andrew Cunanan in FX's “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.” In September, Criss won an Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his portrayal of Cunanan, who was 27 when he killed himself in Miami a week after murdering legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace.“Cunanan was from National City, which has changed a bit since he came out. But there’s still a disparity of wealth and culture in San Diego,” Criss noted.“That had a huge impact on the dichotomy he lived in. Because you have a very vibrant cultural place, right on top of very disparate sections of town that don’t have the same resources, even though they’re both in this ‘paradisical’ place.“You also have the disparity between the more conservative military lifestyle in San Diego and also a very vibrant gay community, especially in the 1990s. You have all these polarities and it can really tear a person in two to have all those disparities on top of each other. And, with Andrew being in the right place and right time, it gave way to things he would be torn apart by for the rest of his life as an adult — through no fault of San Diego or his own — which is why we called the series ‘An American Crime Story.’ Because it’s a distinctly American experience. ... Andrew spent his time in San Diego as a young man, for better or worse.”Before he killed Versace, Cunanan murdered four other people in a bloody, cross-country spree. The first was Jeffrey Trail, a former U.S. naval officer he had befriended in San Diego in 1991.“We get caught up in the things that are deplorable about Andrew,” Criss said. “But there was a great deal people loved about him. That came, in part, from him going to a private school and being so sensitive. San Diego is a big character in the series.”Michele, in her post-”Glee” TV series — the horror-comedy “Scream Queens” — portrayed Hester Ulrich, a character who wore a trademark neck brace. Ulrich’s act of on-screen murder was partly mitigated by the fact she was killing a killer. Her two seasons on the show, in 2015 and 2016, came a quarter-century after she began her professional acting career.“I was 8 when I did my first Broadway show, so I pretty much am a ‘Broadway baby’,” said Bronx native Michele, whose Broadway credits include “Spring Awakening” and “Les Misérables.”“And, for me, it really did instill a great work ethic,” she continued. “At that age, you learn to be on time. And no one, at the end of the day, walked me on stage and held my hand. So I had to do it all myself and learned to rely on myself and take really good care of my voice and body.“Nothing else could have prepared me for the beast that ‘Glee’ was. We worked 15 hours a day. We did our dance and singing rehearsals. It was like jumping out of a plane and then making a perfect landing. The only thing that could have prepared me for all that was Broadway, so I’m really grateful.”Criss, a San Francisco native, debut made his Broadway debut in 2012 in a limited engagement in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” In 2016, he starred in a national touring production of the genre-bending musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch."“People ask me: ‘How long have you been acting?’ Professionally, the lines are blurry,” Criss said. “I’ve just always loved musical theater, because my parents had a lot of soundtracks we played in the car. When I was 10, I did a show with San Francisco’s wonderful theater revival company, 42nd Street Moon, which did productions of lost shows. What was great about that is it gave me a real sense of a work ethic, just like Lea said about Broadway.“A real valuable life experience is that we grew up a lot faster than our peers, because our colleagues were adults. I’m the youngest brother in my family. Having spent a lifetime trying to impress my elders gave me an appreciation for working in a professional environment. As I’ve gotten older, I can see how that really affected my life. Thanks to being a cultivated person, I’ve known deep-cut Rodgers & Hart songs since I was 13 that I still perform now on the road.”Beyond having become breakout stars as featured cast members on the hit TV series “Glee,” musical pals Darren Criss and Lea Michele have more than a few things in common.
As their ongoing LM/DC joint concert tour reaffirms, each is a major music nerd — and very proud of it.
Each of them lives in Los Angeles, has two solo albums to their credit, and has played a murderer on separate TV series.
Each of them is engaged to be wed, although not to each other.
Growing up, each of them was immersed in doing musical theater, be it on Broadway (Michele) or way, way off Broadway (Criss).
Accordingly, each responded enthusiastically when asked if — given their respective matrimonial plans — the two “Glee” alums might sing the 1955 Frank Sinatra chestnut, “Love and Marriage,” at their Thursday performance  at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay.
“We will now!” said Criss, as Michele chortled with delight during a recent joint phone interview from Los Angeles. “We’ll do a Tom Waits version of ‘Love and Marriage’!”
The reference to Waits, a 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, was no coincidence. Nor was the suitably gruff-voiced verse of “Love and Marriage” that Criss gleefully began to belt out.
Criss likes to do a song by a locally bred artist in each city he and Michele perform in during their current tour, for which they feature everything from Broadway musical staples to rock and pop classics from various eras. He perked up upon learning — a few minutes earlier in this interview — that Waits grew up in San Diego.
“Is that a suggestion? What do you want to hear?” Criss asked. “Early Tom? Later Tom? What album?”
How about something from Waits’ landmark 1983 album, “Swordfishtrombones,” which features his longtime San Diego confidante Francis Thumm, a now-retired Point Loma High School music teacher and member of the Harry Partch Ensemble?
“Done!” Criss said.
“I have been to San Diego,” Michele noted. “But not enough as I probably should, given that we’re so close. It’s really gorgeous and one of our places to come and explore.”
Emmy Award-winning performance
Criss did a fair amount of exploring across San Diego County, including in National City, where the teen-aged Waits worked at Napoleone's  Pizza House back in the 1960s.
Criss’ time here was in preparation for his role last year as San Diego-bred murderer Andrew Cunanan in FX's “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.” In September, Criss won an Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his portrayal of Cunanan, who was 27 when he killed himself in Miami a week after murdering legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace.
“Cunanan was from National City, which has changed a bit since he came out. But there’s still a disparity of wealth and culture in San Diego,” Criss noted.
“That had a huge impact on the dichotomy he lived in. Because you have a very vibrant cultural place, right on top of very disparate sections of town that don’t have the same resources, even though they’re both in this ‘paradisical’ place.
“You also have the disparity between the more conservative military lifestyle in San Diego and also a very vibrant gay community, especially in the 1990s. You have all these polarities and it can really tear a person in two to have all those disparities on top of each other. And, with Andrew being in the right place and right time, it gave way to things he would be torn apart by for the rest of his life as an adult — through no fault of San Diego or his own — which is why we called the series ‘An American Crime Story.’ Because it’s a distinctly American experience. ... Andrew spent his time in San Diego as a young man, for better or worse.”
Before he killed Versace, Cunanan murdered four other people in a bloody, cross-country spree. The first was Jeffrey Trail, a former U.S. naval officer he had befriended in San Diego in 1991.
“We get caught up in the things that are deplorable about Andrew,” Criss said. “But there was a great deal people loved about him. That came, in part, from him going to a private school and being so sensitive. San Diego is a big character in the series.”
Michele, in her post-”Glee” TV series — the horror-comedy “Scream Queens” — portrayed Hester Ulrich, a character who wore a trademark neck brace. Ulrich’s act of on-screen murder was partly mitigated by the fact she was killing a killer. Her two seasons on the show, in 2015 and 2016, came a quarter-century after she began her professional acting career.
“I was 8 when I did my first Broadway show, so I pretty much am a ‘Broadway baby’,” said Bronx native Michele, whose Broadway credits include “Spring Awakening” and “Les Misérables.”

Criss, a San Francisco native, debut made his Broadway debut in 2012 in a limited engagement in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” In 2016, he starred in a national touring production of the genre-bending musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch."
“People ask me: ‘How long have you been acting?’ Professionally, the lines are blurry,” Criss said. “I’ve just always loved musical theater, because my parents had a lot of soundtracks we played in the car. When I was 10, I did a show with San Francisco’s wonderful theater revival company, 42nd Street Moon, which did productions of lost shows. What was great about that is it gave me a real sense of a work ethic, just like Lea said about Broadway.
“A real valuable life experience is that we grew up a lot faster than our peers, because our colleagues were adults. I’m the youngest brother in my family. Having spent a lifetime trying to impress my elders gave me an appreciation for working in a professional environment. As I’ve gotten older, I can see how that really affected my life. Thanks to being a cultivated person, I’ve known deep-cut Rodgers & Hart songs since I was 13 that I still perform now on the road.”
She has many tattoos; he has none
Perhaps the most visible difference between Michele and Criss is she has more than a dozen tattoos and he has none.
On stage, their musical and personal camaraderie is readily apparent as they duet on Broadway musical chestnuts, the “Glee” theme song and hits by Toto and The Human League. Their closing number each night is Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love,” although their version nods to Garth Brooks’ take on the song, not Dylan’s or Adele’s.
“It‘s really a thank-you to our fans. I’m a huge Dylan fan. But when I first heard Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion, they cut me to my core. I love when someone’s voice opens up, in and behind the words they are singing.”
“A lot of the songs we’ve done on ‘Glee’,” Criss added, “are massive in their own right. Doing this tour, we can give a new context to songs that have a certain meaning to people, not only from a narrative of the show, but in relation to their own lives.”
Criss this year proposed to TV writer/producer Mia Swier,  whom he has dated for the past seven years. Might the couple be rushing into things?
Criss and Michele both burst into laughter.
“That was great,” Criss said. “Kudos!”
“I’ve only been with my fiancé for one year,” Michele interjected in a mock-peeved voice. “Why aren’t you asking me that question?”
Told she would be next, Michele and Criss laughed again.
“Everything’s in good time, so we feel good about it,” Criss said.
“Ditto,” said Michele, who is engaged to clothing company president Zandy   Reich. “I just saw what Darrin and Mia had and hoped for the same thing for me.”
Do these two “Glee” veterans approve of each other’s spouse-to-be choices?
“We’ll see!” Criss quipped, sparking more laughter from Michele.
“Of course, I can only joke about the things I care about,” Criss stressed. “It’s true and I’ll tie it back to this tour. I’ll make fun of Lea as the day is long. That’s one of my favorite pastimes, because I love Lea and care about her and am inspired by her talent. And that just makes her more susceptible to my joking.”
“We have such a brother/sister relationship,” Michele agreed. “I find I look up to Darren like, maybe, potentially, I’d be his younger sibling — even though I think I’m the older sibling. I’ve learned so much from him on this tour and to relax in this performance process and not get caught up being nervous.”

New Post has been published on https://techcrunchapp.com/naya-rivera-who-rose-to-fame-on-tv-show-glee-dies-at-33-the-associated-press/
Naya Rivera, who rose to fame on TV show 'Glee,' dies at 33 - The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Naya Rivera, a singer and actor who played a gay cheerleader on the hit TV musical comedy “Glee,” was found dead Monday in a Southern California lake. She was 33.
Rivera’s body was discovered five days after she disappeared on Lake Piru, where her son, Josey, was found July 8 alone on a boat the two had rented, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the body was Rivera’s.
“Rest sweet, Naya. What a force you were,” wrote “Glee” co-star Jane Lynch on Twitter. Steven Canals, who co-created and produced the FX television show “Pose,” tweeted that he was “heartbroken over all the stories that will remain untold.”
Viola Davis sent her prayers to Rivera’s family and Kristin Chenoweth said: “Thank you for what you gave the world.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that “as a Latina, it’s rare to have a rich, complex characters reflect us in media.”
Rivera began acting at a young age, but she rose to national attention playing a lesbian teen on “Glee,” which aired from 2009 until 2015 on Fox. She is survived by her parents, Yolanda and George; a younger brother, Mychal; a sister, Nickayla; and her 4-year-old son.
“Naya Rivera was a fierce talent with so much more to do and this is such a terrible tragedy. We are forever grateful for the indelible contribution she made to ‘Glee,’ from the first episode to the last,” said a statement from 20th Century Fox TV and Fox Entertainment.
A native of Santa Clarita, California, Rivera began acting at 4, appearing in such series as “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Family Matters” and “The Bernie Mac Show.” As a teen, she struggled with an eating disorder and had breast implants put in at 18 (“a confidence thing, not a sexual thing,” she would later write in her autobiography).
“I had the lowest self esteem in high school possible. I wasn’t popular, I didn’t have friends, but I would say it’s really important that you know who you are and you’re going to win in the end because of that,” Rivera said in a 2011 interview with The Associated Press.
She worked odd jobs as a telemarketer, a nanny, a waitress and an Abercrombie & Fitch greeter before landing the role of Santana Lopez on Ryan Murphy’s “Glee.” She auditioned by singing “Emotion.” The pilot offered her no speaking lines.
Rivera played a secondary character — the mean cheerleader with blistering put-downs — in the show’s first season, but became a show regular in the second season as she struggled to reveal her character’s sexual identity. Many on social media credited her character for making them feel better about their own sexuality.
“Honestly, I never thought I’d actually be playing a teen lesbian,” she told the Los Angeles Times in 2011. “I didn’t think it was going to go this far. But I’m glad that it did, because there have been a lot of fans who have expressed that they’ve been going through similar situations in their lives. I’ve heard from girls that are in high school, they’re 16, 17, and they’re like, ‘I came out to my mom,’ or ‘I came out to my friends, and thank you for helping me do that.’”
Some of her more memorable songs on the show include a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” with guest star Gwyneth Paltrow, “Here Comes the Sun” with Demi Lovato, and a tearful cover of The Band Perry’s “If I Die Young.”
Rivera’s “brilliance and humor were unmatched,” said “Glee” co-star Chris Colfer on Instagram. “She could turn a bad day into a great day with a single remark. She inspired and uplifted people without even trying.” Jenna Ushkowitz, another “Glee” co-star, promised “to help the legacy of your talent, humor, light and loyalty live on.”
Rivera struggled to get career traction amid the rising young talent on the show that included Colfer, Cory Monteith, Lea Michele, Darren Criss, Amber Riley, Melissa Benoist and Dianna Agron. She was no longer a series regular during the sixth and final season of “Glee.”
“It would be an understatement to say that ‘Glee’ changed my life. It overhauled it. It got me out of debt. It helped to cement my career. And before the show, I’d never had a group of people I was that close with,” she wrote in her memoir, titled “Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up.”
“But while ‘Glee’ changed our lives, it didn’t necessarily change who we were. We started the show as a ragtag group of misfits, and six seasons later, when we filmed the last episode, we were still the same bunch of misfits. Just now wearing more expensive jeans.”
After the show, Rivera sought success in film and music. She made her feature film debut in 2014’s “At the Devil’s Door,” playing a woman caught in the middle of supernatural events, and released the single “Sorry” in 2013 featuring rapper Big Sean, a one-time fiance.
She and actor Ryan Dorsey were married in 2014 and their son, Josey, was born in 2015. She called her young son “my greatest success, and I will never do any better than him.”
Rivera was arrested and charged in West Virginia in 2017 with misdemeanor domestic battery after she allegedly hit Dorsey. The charge was dismissed because Dorsey did not wish to press charges. They divorced soon after.
Most recently, Rivera had a role on Lifetime’s “Devious Maids,” released her memoir in 2016 and played school administrator Collette Jones in the YouTube Red online series “Step Up: High Water” starring Ne-Yo. The show is about a cutthroat performing arts school in Atlanta.
Rivera’s death is the latest death in a tragic arc of “Glee” actors. Monteith died in 2013 — exactly seven years to the day before Rivera’s body was publicly identified — from a toxic mix of alcohol and heroin, and Rivera’s ex-boyfriend Mark Salling, who played a jock on the series, killed himself in 2018 after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. Rivera and Salling dated for three years and broke up in 2010.
In the preface to her autobiography, Rivera wrote that motherhood had changed her life and given it perspective. She said she was braver, too.
“Your life doesn’t have to be perfect for you to be proud. In fact, I think it’s the opposite: the more imperfect your life has been, the prouder you should be, because it means you’ve come that much further, and also probably had a lot more fun along the way.”
___
This story has been corrected to show Rivera’s body was discovered five days after she disappeared, not six days.

I was tagged by @klaineandbiscuits and @notthatbea and finally am getting some time to do this!
Nickname: Jules, Julio (the spanish pronunciation), Miss J or Dr. J. My best friend used to call me Sparky, he hasn’t done that in years. My family called me Yaya growing up.
Gender: cis female
Star sign: I don’t believe in them, but apparently Sagittarius now. They adjusted the star chart when I was a teenager, so I’m no longer a Scorpio.
Height: 5′3″
Birthday: November 22. As in tomorrow. I’m turning 39 and the thought of changing my “about me” from “mid thirties” to “late thirties” is making me hyperventilate.
Favorite bands: (Glee Cast), Matchbox 20, Carbon Leaf, The Weepies, Alan Parsons Project (growing up, this was my dad’s favorite group, so there’s a lot of nostalgia here), Barnaby Bright, Of Monsters and Men, Mumford and Sons, Bastille, Computer Games...
Favorite solo artists: (Glee Cast, especially Chris Colfer, I live in endless hope for his album), Vienna Teng (I’ve seen her live 8 times I think?), Eva Cassidy, Brandy Carlile (she’s got a new album coming out and just released a single which is spectacular), Ingrid Michaelson, Adele, Loreena McKennitt, Alex Wong, Megan Slankman (new favorite - just went to a house concert, her voice is lovely), Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra.
And because they didn’t ask and they should have:
Favorite musicals: Hamilton, Wicked, Finian’s Rainbow, Hedwig and the Angry Inch (saw it because of Darren and found out a new favorite), The Slipper and the Rose, Aspect of Love (stupid story but Michael Ball’s voice is gorgeous), Guys and Dolls, Mulan, Beautiful, Pippin, Dreamgirls
Favorite soundtracks: Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Hunger Games (both the instrumental soundtrack and the inspiration albums), The X-Files (Mark Snow - genius), Lost (Michael Giacchino - genius), Buffy the Musical, Strictly Ballroom, Return to Me, Titanic (it’s disappointing that this became so popular because it is gorgeous), Shall We Dance
Song stuck in my head: Smooth Criminal (glee version) was playing on my drive home today.
Last movie I watched: In the theater? I think Hidden Figures, which I just realized was last year’s release. I did watch Moana on Netflix a couple of months ago.
Last show I watched: M*A*S*H and Star Trek: Voyager which play every Monday night. I haven’t watched anything since coming home from work today (I don’t actually watch much tv anymore).
When did I start this blog: Apparently March 2011. Long time ago.
What do I post: a fair amount of glee and glee cast (particularly Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Darren Criss and Ashley Fink), politics and health care, check please, photography and nature, things that make me laugh, other fandoms. I’m pretty mixed.
Other blogs: I have a personal blog (redheadsnippet) that I use infrequently and cross-post to livejournal and dreamwidth. I keep saying that I’ll use them more and then don’t. I miss the LJ days for sure. Feel free to friend!  Also, if we’re mutuals and you want to be facebook friends, message me. I tend to rant a little more about health care policies there.
Do I get asks: Nope. One or two if I’m doing a meme.
Average sleep: Depends on the week. If I’m working my 7-day stretch, I get about 6-7, because I have a hard time going to bed before midnight, until I collapse midweek. If I’m working nights, I sleep for about 6-7 hours and then take another nap in the afternoon before work, but I never feel as refreshed. And if I’m not working, I go to bed around 1 and wake up around 9 or 10.
Lucky number: I like square and prime numbers. I don’t know that any of them are particularly lucky.
Dream job: Mostly what I’m doing, although I dread the idea of arguing about sodium management with neurosurgeons for the rest of my life. So there might be a career change in 5-10 years.
Food: Yes, I like food. I live in a great city for food and don’t explore it nearly as much as I should.
Last book I read:  The Guernsey Literacy and Potato Peel Pie Society. It was a reread but it had been long enough since the first read that it felt like new. Just as charming and engaging.
What I’m wearing: A purple and black sleeveless blouse with a black cardigan and brown/black pants with black socks. I haven’t changed from work yet.
Favorite fandoms:  Oh gosh. All of my fandoms have been so different, although I mostly interacted with small groups of likeminded fans - I’ve never been a big name fan. My first fandom, X-Files, was a small web-based email group (Fox William Mulder on the Web), where we waxed academically about Fox Mulder’s attributes. I was 20. There was my Gilmore Girls/Literati years where I lurked around the SH.org message boards and then migrated to livejournal. I still have some close friends from those years. I ran a discussion group for LOTR that I still miss to this day (it’s why my website has the URL of lotrinklings). I stayed on the fringes for Harry Potter and Doctor Who, mostly just reading fic and friending a couple of people on LJ. I always wanted to get into the Lost fandom but never found quite the right niche as I didn’t really ship anybody. And then of course, there’s been glee/klaine which has been my main squeeze for, gosh, 6 years now? I can’t describe how much this fandom has meant to me - and I find that I love fandom even more now that the show has ended. Currently, I read and think about fanfic for Check Please (I have a couple of fic ideas percolating), but since many of my glee friends also immersed in the fandom, I haven’t felt the need to seek out additional fandom experiences.
Tagging to participate: I don’t know who has done this, so the last 5 people from my notifications: @leydhawk, @lishashisha, @jackabelle73, @heresasongthatisreal, and @andintheendtheloveyoutake
