FRAN DRESCHER APPRECIATION POST
Tumblr media
Fran Drescher has been out there being awesome since 1993, when she created and produced THE NANNY (1993-1999) with her then-husband, Peter Marc Jacobsen.
Tumblr media
An iconic 90s woman who taught me to be the lady in red when everybody else is wearing tan
Tumblr media
Also one of the characters on TV who actively made me wish I was Jewish
Tumblr media
In 2021, Fran ran to be the President of the Screen Actors Guild Union (SAG-AFTRA) and won against fellow actor Matthew Modine.
Tumblr media
As you may know, SAG-AFTRA has voted to go on strike along with the Writer's Guild of America. This means that a large chunk of Hollywood and the motion picture industry is on a hiatus until terms can be agreed to with the massively powerful studios.
At issue is LABOR, and our fabulous Fran is making a point of highlighting that this isn't just Hollywood's problem. The issues that these workers are asking for is the same as many other strikes: fair pay for reasonable work. The studios are hoping that innovations in tech and AI will make human writers and actors less necessary and less expensive than ever. And you can bet that every CEO in every industry is hoping the same: they would looooove to replace you with tech and pay you nothing.
Tumblr media
Of course, studios' gamble on AI won't actually work. AI could have never created successful hit sitcom The Nanny. The Nanny works (and still works!) because it uses the special talents of a unique human with a vision--Fran Drescher. She had a vision and then she made it, wrote it, AND performed it. AI can't improvise timely zingers on the spot or create a fashion icon. AI can only feed you recycled content, designed to look brand new. AI will never be able to fake authentic human creativity.

Catch up on old content: It's a great time to visit The Nanny's YouTube page, where they have full episodes and great compilations and clips.

Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, William Shatner guest stars in "Mother, May I Go Out to Swim?" episode 26 of the fifth season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents (original air date April 10, 1960). He channels his inner Norman Bates as a mama's boy with an "artistic temperament" who falls in love on vacation, but ends up killing his girlfriend when his domineering mother disapproves. Like the last episode of AHP I screencapped, this story is told in flashback, framed by scenes from the coroner's inquest, with Shatner narrating the flashback sequences.
Within the episode, the girlfriend's death is ruled an accident, but in what I assume was an attempt to placate the network censors, Hitchcock's outro says that the decision was later overturned. (TV Standards & Practices at the time hewed closely to the Motion Picture Code, which frowned on criminals going unpunished.)
Other Trek connections: The Associate Producer of this episode is the multitalented actor/producer/director Norman Lloyd, who played Captain Picard's old mentor Professor Galen in the Next Generation episode "The Chase."

Farscape: The Complete Series will be released on Blu-ray on November 21 via Shout Studios. The 22-disc box set contains all 88 episodes of the science fiction series along with the miniseries Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars.
Created by Rockne S. O'Bannon (SeaQuest DSV, Alien Nation), the show was produced by The Jim Henson Company and Hallmark Entertainment. It ran for four seasons between 1999 and 2003.
Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Virginia Hey, Anthony Simcoe, Gigi Edgley, Paul Goddard, Lani Tupu, Wayne Pygram, Jonathan Hardy, Tammy MacIntosh, Raelee Hill, Melissa Jaffer, David Franklin, and Rebecca Riggs star.
Special features are in progress and will be announced at a later date, but Shout promises hours of extras.
John Crichton. Astronaut. Flung through a wormhole and lost in a galaxy far from home. He finds himself in the middle of a prison break, surrounded by hostile aliens, soaring through space inside a glorious living spaceship called Moya. Hunted by the relentless Peacekeepers, he allies himself with his unimaginably alien fellow refugees and searches for a way home. So begins the epic sci-fi classic Farscape.
Pre-order Farscape: The Complete Series.

Rating 500+ Theme Tunes - #4: Animaniacs
Have you ever wondered who the Warner Bros. are? Well, they were probably some real guys but they're also two... creatures of some form, and they even have a sister! These are the Animaniacs! Yakko, Wakko, & Dot Warner live in the Warner Bros. water tower, and our the main characters of this 90's classic. The show features all sorts of comedic segments with all sorts of characters however, even being the origin of the infamous Pinky & The Brain. I'd liken this show to a sketch comedy show in a way, with wall-to-wall jokes and a variety of settings.
Tumblr media
Now, Animaniacs is the first show thus far that was truly before my time. It's original run finished four whole years before my birth. I'll give you a sentence to process that. While I haven't watched full episodes of the show, I did watch the Pinky & The Brain standalone show and I'm also familiar with many segments from the show. I frequently listen to Yakko Warner's Nations of the World and Wakko Warner's America.
The show seems like an absolute hoot from everything I see, absolutely something I would get a lot of enjoyment from. It always makes me laugh! It's pretty weird too that Steven Spielburg is behind Animaniacs! That man really got around. Anyway, while we're here, I also haven't seen the revival series. We don't even get Hulu in the UK.
Theme time!

Animaniacs Theme Tune
This song goes so goddamn hard. I can't even lie. One of the biggest earworms I have ever heard in the history of intros. Everytime I find myself singing it! Just everything about this one makes me love this show, which is really exactly what you want. So much of the humour comes across perfectly in this song, even including a line about the characters' "pay-for-play contracts"! The meta-humour, the quick-humour, and while it can't influence my decision here, the physical humour of the animation is all perfect. Big brassy and mischievous instrumentals tie it all together brilliantly, making it that classic Warner Bros. cartoon mayhem for the audience of the 90's, with pop-culture of the time and fourth-wall breaks aplenty. This show and this theme knows what it is and wants to use that fully to its advantage.
An absolutely delightful intro. This one has to be an S-tier for me. Those are the facts!
Tumblr media
Stay tuned for more and be sure to send in any suggestions for other shows you'd like to see done (after the 500 already in the pipeline that is). Check out the intro to this series here, and now, the tier list.
