Saw this cool idea for making wrist cuff thingies out of old jeans. I made this one 100% upcycled materials. (Even the thread is upcycled from the jeans I got it from.)

“I’m super interested in the eccentric / DIY. I’m wearing a red button-up with a hand-patched t-shirt about my love for bunnies. I made it with my best friend who taught me how to sew. We would just hang out and make things together. I’ve been really into figuring out how to upcycle/reinterpret a lot of my clothing to wear 100% of it. Fashion is fun; it’s analytical but also intuitive. My skirt is thrifted, tights from The Sock Man — I get excited to wear them, the red makes me feel like a drawing. My Dr. Martens are channeling my inner CEO.”

Headcanon: Cory is a rampant thrifter/upcycler and hasn't bought any clothing (except socks and underwear) at full price in literal years
Yes! It's freaking hard to find Harajuku/Decora Kei fashion that doesn't cost like... $100 at least, so Cory gets most of his stuff from thrift stores or like the Goodwill bins or something, then cuts and alters and bedazzles it to high heavens.

Last week, a dynamic team of seven embarked on a quest for positive change within our university. Entrusted with the mission to inspire innovation, we delved into gathering insights, sparking discussions, and unleashing transformative ideas. Join us as we unveil our journey towards a brighter campus future.
The following day, we conducted interviews, but the process was challenging due to students' busy schedule s and frequent class suspensions. Despite this, through collaboration, we successfully gathered insights from over 25 respondents across various CMU departments utilizing Google Forms and face-to-face interactions. Each student provided unique perspectives and revealed diverse insights, while also offering innovative solutions for consideration.
We've recognized garbage accumulation as a significant issue among students. In response, we've developed mats from recycled materials, providing versatility for outdoor activities also, from aiding in outdoor study sessions to provide a comfortable surface for picnics under campus trees. Focusing on CMU students, particularly those with free time between classes, our aim is to enrich the campus experience while addressing environmental concerns through practical solutions.
Our focus audience encompasses CMU students, especially those enjoying generous breaks between classes. Our innovative product, tailored for both utility and relaxation, is meticulously fashioned from upcycled plastic, encompassing discarded plastic bottles and other waste. Committed to ecological stewardship, we strive to provide not only comfort but also uphold our planet's safeguarding by exclusively utilizing 100% recyclable materials.
Through engaging with students from diverse backgrounds, we gained valuable insights into the challenges facing our school community. Taking a proactive stance, we identified key qualities essential for success and discovered that creating mats out from recycled materials offers a practical and sustainable solution to waste. Our discussions highlighted the importance of educating students about sustainability early on, fostering environmental responsibility. Moreover, students expressed a keen interest in sustainable consumption and a sociocultural approach. Together, let's work towards making the world a better place!

Jessica Minh Anh reimagines Paris as the runway
Tumblr media
The legendary fashion show producer combined runways, presentations, and campaigns into one unique production at iconic locations during Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture.
Tumblr media
Erase any preconceived notions of conventional catwalk presentations from your mind. The eminent fashion show producer, Jessica Minh Anh, has astutely redefined the contemporary fashion showcase. She has seamlessly amalgamated traditional runways, presentations, and campaigns into an unparalleled production, and it unfolded simultaneously at multiple iconic locations throughout Paris during Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture.
Tumblr media
Renowned for her historic fashion events at the world's most iconic monuments and sustainable energy sites, Jessica transformed Paris' landmarks on the 25th of January, 2024, into a grand fusion of fashion, architecture, culture, and artistic expression. The event followed Jessica’s Sky-High Ocean Catwalk in Rio de Janeiro just a month earlier.
This remarkable production featured models elegantly striding against the backdrop of cinematic masterpieces, including the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Pont Alexandre III, Seine River, and Place Vendome, all on a single day. This strategic feat aimed to showcase creative designs from diverse continents while offering a fresh perspective on the beloved City of Lights.
Tumblr media
Romane Ouisse, Event & PR Manager of KEVIN.MURPHY France, enthused, "This event injected unprecedented vibrancy into the fashion industry, and we are immensely proud to have been a part of it. Jessica Minh Anh is not only a visionary with extraordinary concepts but also a masterful executor, turning the seemingly impossible into reality. She makes this collaboration even more challenging and exciting for KEVIN.MURPHY!"
Tumblr media
The J Winter Fashion Show 2024 seamlessly blended transparent rooftop buses and iconic locations to unveil a diverse array of collections from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. With innovative transitions reminiscent of popular social media platforms, Jessica expertly connected with the younger generation. The spectacle featured classic catwalk photography, captivating fashion films, and digital trends, engaging millions of fashion enthusiasts globally.
Tumblr media
Vincent Durand, CEO of Bus Toqué Paris, admired the logistical precision required to orchestrate this extraordinary event, stating, "Coordinating such a multifaceted production could have been a logistical challenge, given its complexity. We were thoroughly impressed with Jessica Minh Anh's efficient execution, which brought it all to life within just six hours. We provided two luxury buses to support her production, and we found that Jessica's energy, creativity, and message perfectly aligned with our company's vision to deliver an unforgettable Parisian experience."
Tumblr media
The fashion extravaganza showcased the enchanting creations of Chotronette, a Romanian powerhouse renowned for conjuring an imaginative universe inspired by "la vie en rose." Each ensemble was a breathtaking rendition of twentieth-century ball gowns, artfully combining tulle, florals, and vibrant color palettes to create a tapestry of art and cinematic allure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OTKUTYR Fashion House from Saudi Arabia, a long-time collaborator in Jessica Minh Anh's Catwalk-On-Water series in Paris, captivated the audience with an exceptional pret-a-couture collection. More than a fashion brand, OTKUTYR serves as a collaborative hub committed to eco-friendly techniques such as upcycling, setting a global example for sustainable fashion practices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The collection harmoniously merged timeless elegance with a contemporary Arab twist, challenging conventional gender norms with tailored men's style suits for women adorned with statement bows. Jessica herself graced the catwalk in a signature maroon body-hugging dress, meticulously hand-embroidered with 100 roses, accentuating the intricacies of the female form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Making their debut in Jessica's production, Melissia brand from Kuwait presented luxurious abaya designs crafted with premium fabrics and impeccable tailoring. These designs seamlessly blended tradition with contemporary styles, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region while catering to modern tastes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last but certainly not least, Vietnamese luxury fashion house, Tracy Studio, unveiled a collection named "The Silk Road: From East to West." Tracy Studio's designs epitomized a captivating fusion of craftsmanship and tailoring, portraying confident and elegant women with timeless beauty transcending generations. The collection included strapless dresses, capes, unique necklines, and shoulder pairings, encapsulating the essence of femininity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jessica Minh Anh expressed her love for Tracy Studio, saying, "Tracy Studio's unwavering commitment to craftsmanship excellence impressed me. The brand masterfully incorporated embroidery, rhinestones, and beading to create a harmonious fashion symphony." Their modernized rendition of the Vietnamese famous Ao Dai, a sparkling blue structured dress worn by Jessica Minh Anh, not only accentuated her stunning silhouette but also embodied the spirit of cultural exchange and beauty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reviving the big frizzy curly fever from the 90s, KEVIN.MURPHY's artistic team was responsible for Jessica Minh Anh's charismatic coiffure. As a hair brand with a strong fashion DNA, this marked the second collaboration between KEVIN.MURPHY and Jessica Minh Anh, following the phenomenal success of J Spring Fashion Show 2022 on the Liquefied Natural Gas cruise ship Costa Toscana in Portofino, Italy.
Tumblr media
J Winter Fashion Show 2024 received invaluable support from Paris J'Adore Hotel and IWG group's Spaces Opéra Garnier, where Jessica's dedicated team worked tirelessly around the clock to bring this unique production to life.
Tumblr media
Jessica Minh Anh's Winter Fashion Show 2024 transcended the realm of fashion; it was a testament to creativity, diversity, and inclusivity, featuring models and designs from different ethnicities. This milestone event marked Jessica's 30th innovative production since her history-making catwalk on England's iconic London Tower Bridge in 2011.

Duran Lantink Democracy
design and editing: Jurgen Maelfeyt
Art Paper Editions, Gent January 2022, 80 pages, 21x29,7cm, ills colour, selfcovering, ISBN 9789493146914 edition of 1000 In collaboration with gallery Madé Van Krimpen.
euro 28,00 email if you want to buy [email protected]
The zine ‘Democracy’ is based on a mythical fashion collection, that goes by the same name, created by Duran Lantink. Both the collection and the zine are examples of how art can challenge and disrupt dominant social and political discourses. Lantinks collection consists of one-of-a-kind pieces created from deadstock and thus creating new work from existing materials referring to Marcel Duchamp’s ready-mades. The pieces are documented in a series of more than 100 photographs in which the tertiary colour magenta is missing, due to Lantink running out of that colour ink on his printer. Despite the absence of magenta, Lantink decided not to reprint the images, creating a set of images that play with the viewer’s sense of perception. In many ways, Lantinks work refers to the practice of Andy Warhol. Although Warhol’s screen printer is not considered a ‘machine’, he used screenprinting to multiply works of art. Warhol also revelled in his apparent machine aesthetic, noting, ‘The things I want to show are mechanical. Machines have fewer problems. I’d like to be a machine wouldn’t you?
Duran Lantink is a Dutch designer based in Amsterdam. Having studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Sandberg Instituut—graduating from the latter in 2017—Lantink’s playful, inclusive vision for the future of sustainable fashion has already seen him shortlisted for the 2019 LVMH Prize. With his innovative approach to upcycling, Lantink’s zero-waste philosophy uses pre-loved garments and deadstock fabrics to create fashion as agenda-setting as it is ethical.

I know what you mean about jojifuku lol! love it so much but yeah there's such a small community for it and everyone that "pulls it off" is literally so small
I'm glad I can finally put a name to it though! I've loved this style for ages but only recently found the title, and finding style refs has been much easier now! still, so hard to find stuff that fits hhhh
100% this... ultimately they are kids/tween clothes so i dont think anybody should feel bad for not being able to fit into them.
i really think getting into a more niche fashion like this requires some creativity, and i think upcycling clothing w pins or patches (there r cute mezzo piano ones sold for p cheap on mercari jp), lace, bows, etc is the best way to go. even print a cute design and put it on a cute plain shirt w transfer paper. (did anybody else do this w band shirts like 10 yrs ago) i personally just love seeing people in jfashion make their own clothing, it's always cute and super inspiring!

Cotton incorporated celebrates the benefits of authentic cotton denim for 151st birthday of blue jeans
Tumblr media
Cotton Incorporated encourages consumers to commemorate the 151st anniversary of the birth of blue jeans, an iconic symbol of American fashion and innovation. One way to participate is by recycling cotton denim and learning more about the circularity of cotton and it uses beyond fashion. So, on this special occasion, we encourage readers to participate in our nationally recognized Blue Jeans Go Green  program.
On this day in 1873, the landscape of apparel was forever changed when the first blue jeans were patented. “The invention of blue jeans marked a pivotal moment in the history of fashion,” said Andrea Samber, Director of Brand Partnerships, at Cotton Incorporated. “From their humble beginnings as functional work attire to becoming a global fashion staple, blue jeans have captured the imagination of people across generations and cultures.”
In addition to celebrating the rich history of blue jeans, Cotton Incorporated highlights the Blue Jeans Go Green program, which collects denim to be recycled in creative ways – from building efforts, pet bed inserts, thermal food packaging, and more. Since its inception, the Blue Jeans Go Green program has diverted millions of pounds of denim from landfills and provided insulation for over 2,000 homes across the United States. Over 5,200,000 pieces of denim and 2,630 tons have been recycled through the program.
Through the Blue Jeans Go Green initiative, we can extend the lifespan of denim while providing sustainable solutions for communities in need, said Samber. “It’s a testament to the enduring impact of blue jeans beyond the realm of fashion.”
Since 2006, over 100 brands and retailers have collaborated with the program.
The Blue Jeans Go Green program is just one of the ways consumers can close the loop on cotton sustainability. Denim recycling is possible because it’s made from cotton, which is a sustainable, natural fiber. Through resale, renewal and upcycling, consumers can help keep the lifecycle of cotton going.
Well-made cotton apparel is durable, making it a perfect match for the blossoming secondhand market where it can be reused repeatedly. Textiles made of 100% cotton can be recycled and may be used to create new products. After it can no longer be reused or recycled, cotton products can be discarded. Cotton can degrade in industrial compost, wastewater, salt water, and freshwater environments, and it also degrades faster than manufactured cellulosic fibers like rayon and oil-based synthetics, according to Cotton Incorporated’s Cotton Circular Lifecycle.
As we celebrate the 151st birthday of blue jeans, Cotton Incorporated invites individuals to join us in supporting the Blue Jeans Go Green initiative. Recycling old denim can contribute to environmental sustainability and the community.

Does Australian Bamboo Clothing Live Up to the Eco-Friendly Claims? Let's Discuss!
In the ever-evolving fashion world, Australians, known for their appreciation for the outdoors and a laid-back lifestyle, are increasingly seeking sustainable clothing options. Bamboo clothes have emerged as a frontrunner, promising comfort, style, and a greener footprint. But before diving headfirst into this trend, a crucial question arises: Do Australian bamboo clothing brands genuinely live up to the eco-friendly claims? Let's deeply dive into exploring this popular fabric's potential benefits and drawbacks.
The Enticing Allure of Bamboo: A Sustainable Champion?
Bamboo clothes have captured the hearts of many eco-conscious consumers for several reasons:
Fast-Growing and Renewable Resource: Bamboo boasts impressive sustainability credentials, unlike traditional cotton, which requires significant water and land resources. This fast-growing grass replenishes quickly, minimising pressure on precious land and water sources.
Chemical-Free Cultivation (Ideally): Organic bamboo cultivation eliminates harmful pesticides and fertilisers in cotton production. This protects soil health and safeguards the well-being of farmers and surrounding ecosystems.
Biodegradable Fabric: Bamboo is a natural fibre, so bamboo clothes are biodegradable. This means they decompose naturally at the end of their lifespan, unlike synthetic fabrics that can linger in landfills for centuries, contributing to microplastic pollution.
Lifting the Veil: The Not-So-Green Side of Bamboo Clothing
However, the environmental benefits of Australian bamboo clothing aren't without complexities that warrant exploration:
Processing Methods Matter: The eco-friendliness of bamboo clothes heavily hinges on the processing methods used. Unfortunately, transforming bamboo into fabric often involves harsh chemicals like lye or sodium hydroxide. These chemicals can negate the benefits of organic cultivation, creating significant environmental pollution.
The Transportation Factor: A large portion of the bamboo clothing sold in Australia is manufactured in Asia. This long-distance transportation adds to the overall carbon footprint of the garment, mainly if air freight is used. While some Australian brands are starting to manufacture locally, it still needs to become a widespread practice.
Limited Transparency: A Challenge for Consumers Unfortunately, not all brands using bamboo clothes are transparent about their sourcing and processing methods. This lack of transparency makes it difficult for consumers to make informed and truly eco-friendly choices.
Australian Bamboo Clothing: Weighing the Pros and Cons with a Critical Eye
So, does Australian bamboo clothing genuinely live up to the eco-friendly hype? Here's a balanced perspective to help you navigate this complex landscape:
Potential for Sustainability: Bamboo clothes are more sustainable than traditional cotton, but only when responsibly sourced and processed. This highlights the importance of choosing brands committed to ethical and eco-conscious practices.
The Power of Transparency: When selecting brands, prioritise those that demonstrate transparency in their sourcing and processing methods. Look for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certifications. These certifications ensure the bamboo is grown organically and processed with minimal environmental impact.
Considering the Lifecycle: The most sustainable garment is often the one you already own. Before rushing out to buy new bamboo clothes, consider giving your existing garments a new lease on life. Embrace repair, upcycling, and mindful consumption to minimise environmental impact.
Moving Towards a More Sustainable Future: Actionable Steps
Here are some concrete steps you can take to ensure your Australian bamboo clothing choices are truly eco-friendly:
Support Sustainable Brands: Research and choose brands with a proven commitment to ethical sourcing, organic cultivation, and responsible processing methods. Look for transparent brands about their supply chains and actively working to minimise their environmental footprint.
Invest in Quality Pieces: Focus on buying high-quality bamboo clothes that are well-made and designed to last. This reduces the need for frequent replacements and minimises overall environmental impact. Look for garments with solid seams, quality stitching, and durable fabrics.
Care for Your Clothes Properly: Proper washing and drying instructions extend the life of your bamboo clothes. This reduces the need to replace clothes more frequently, minimising your environmental footprint. Opt for gentle washing cycles, cold water, and air drying whenever possible.
The Final Word: A Sustainable Journey, One Bamboo Step at a Time
Building a sustainable wardrobe with Australian bamboo clothing is a journey, not a destination. It requires conscious choices, an appreciation for ethical brands, and prioritising quality over quantity.
By making informed decisions and looking beyond the marketing claims, you can contribute to a more sustainable future for the Australian fashion industry. Remember, even small steps towards eco-friendly clothing choices can make a big difference. So, embrace the possibilities, explore bamboo clothes responsibly, and join the movement towards a more sustainable fashion landscape.

Week 6: Social media influencers and slow fashion movements
Over the past few years, a great deal of research and documentation has been done on the social and ecological effects of the fashion business. Across its whole life cycle, it is acknowledged as one of the most polluting industries. Historically, up until around 20 years ago, there were two collections made year (Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter); these days, trend cycles have accelerated, with between 50 and 100 mini collections hitting the market annually (Domingo, 2022). Some of leading company like Zara, H&M are capitalized on fast fashion model, create the greatest quantity of stylish clothing in the shortest amount of time so that customers can keep up with the quick and constantly shifting trend cycles and want to purchase more goods (Ting chi, 2021). Which it led to a hazardous effect on people and polluting the world. Slow fashion is the answer and solution to the issue of pollution and any hazards that effect on human. As it emerges as a sustainable consumption movement and the opposite of fast fashion. Slow fashion aims to slow down the present fashion life cycle by creating no more than four lines each year, emphasizing quality over quantity, and not using mass production (Lai, 2017, p. 82). To make the slow fashion do well, it needs to gain attention from the public and this is where the social media steps in. Social media influencers can be employed as a powerful advertising strategy to close the communication gap between advertisers and consumers about sustainability issues, even if businesses can also utilize social media to directly address these issues (Jacobson, 2022). Influencers like @aditimayer on Instagram with over 90k followers, have a major influence in fashion and an idea for the slow fashion campaign. Slow fashion for now still has a long way to go to gain popularity and recognition in the fashion world. But with collaboration with social media influencers and spread awareness about how fast fashion creates pollution, the public will change their mind and pursuit the slow fashion soon.
