I love your young!Rose design with the braids & hair beads, it reminds me of the Black girls i knew in elementary school (2005-2011), so its deffo “period accurate” and also a delightful choice. The way you draw the human kids in general is really nice, youre really good at conveying specific features with minimal lines (like her & Mom’s nose shape). Do you have any tips for how you draw faces to make them not same-face or repetitively “white” features, especially when drawing in a less “realistic” style (i dont wanna say your style is cartoony but idk what i would call it tbh)? I took a life drawing class back in 2019 but we mostly drew the same two models or our classmates, and it was both a limited pool of features plus feels hard to translate into art that isnt attempting to be 100% realistic.

Sorry if this is rambly. Congrats on 10k. Love ur new icon, tho i miss the Horb. Do you take commissions? I think i asked this before but i forgetful af.

thank you for the ask :)!! i'm really flattered that you think i'm good at avoiding same-face syndrome because i am VERY LAZY when it comes to drawing and i could definitely be doing a better job ;^^ i'm also not the best at drawing people diversely(?), it's just something i have to get better at. there are people way more qualified than me to give advice about this... but i can try giving some tips

the first is that, like with anything, if i'm not confident that i can accurately portray something or a specific feature i will usually look up a reference. i like paying attention to things like the position of the browbone, height of the cheekbones, shape of the chin, shape of the eyes, length/width of the face, width of the nostrils, shape/position of the bridge of the nose, roundness of the cheeks, etc. when i draw characters (specifically the homestuck characters i like, because i think about them a lot) i have an idea in my head of how they look and how they differ from one another. for example i see jade with a longer diamond-shaped face while rose has a shorter heart-shaped face, so i do my best to depict that in my drawings

(idk if this illustration makes ANY SENSE bc like i said i think that i also struggle with pushing myself in regards to this and i think i still have more to learn/practice)

i think it comes down to paying attention to the proportions/types of specific facial features and adjusting them each to create a unique face

that said when it comes to stylizing what you see from photographic references, i understand that it can be tricky to simplify it. i really don't have any advice for this.... i just play around with it until it looks good while also being recognizable as the specific thing i'm trying to draw.......... so in that case i think it helps to use other people's art as a reference too! i don't really care about sticking to one "style" so i don't mind drawing in a slightly different way if i want to do something another artist is also doing. so for example if you're struggling with drawing 4c hair i recommend looking at other people's drawings of characters with 4c hair that you like and playing around with if you can incorporate their techniques into your own art.

i hope this all made sense ;^^ there are definitely a lot of tutorials out there that are way more informative than this one

also, to answer your last question, i plan to open up a few commission slots next week! (as long as i have enough time to that is)

@paintingtheice so I totally meant to post this yesterday and then fell asleep editing/adding on to this. This is not the essay on gendering Sidney Crosby we’ve talked about in dms it’s instead a different fandom essay that I started writing in my head half as a convo and then said fuck it essay time. @podcasts-8-my-heart this is also dedicated to you saying you’re proud of me for writing 2.5k+. I’m proud of you.

So I was thinking on my bus ride into work this morning (yesterday - yes it’s been a day this got long don’t look at me like that) about hrpf and SidGeno and some of the shifts I’ve seen fandom go through in my time following hockey. There are a million and one little reasons why things have changed and many of them can simply be chalked up to the passing of time; new information gets revealed, new events happen, roster turnover, and fandom/writer turnover. One thing that I think about a lot is when fic is set in relation to “canon.” The relationship with canon in hrpf is both deeper and more divorced than other fandom, but stay with me I’m gonna pull a bunch of words out my ass and hope it makes a lick of sense.

The first talking point/part of this thesis is recency bias. People are way more inclined to favor recent events over the past. You see this in the actual fandom with people reacting to losses or saying “we never win against [team]” when we have in fact won against that team as recent as last year. It’s this sort of bias that causes us as readers/writers to read something current and assume it’s always been this way and then experience cognitive dissonance with other depictions of the characters that are older or simply different. “He would not fucking say that.” Well once upon a time maybe he did. Maybe it’s out of character now, but back then it was the defining character study for how fandom understood him and you need to sit down and actually look at what people were saying. Maybe it was never in character but the author committed to being ooc and you can see how our understanding has drifted closer or farther away in the years since.

The second talking point is that when fandom isn’t reacting to current canon it has a tendency to latch on to specific parts of canon and not let go. I’m quantifying that as “events”. Fandom hates filler but it loves a plot point. In hprf in general and sidgeno specifically you see this in a lot of different ways. How many stories have been written about [insert team]’s cup run? The Olympics? I’ve read so many fics about 2015 Worlds despite never reading hrpf before 2016. We love an event. Do we actually care about every game of the season or tournament tho? Not really unless something specific to progress the plot or characterization happens. Geno visiting Sid at when they’re supposed to be enemies is more important than whoever Canada beat in the round robin.

Anyway this is all introductory backtracking because the original thrust of this essay was defining to myself the “when” that people write about. My brainstorming had it separated into the nebulous now, right fucking now when I (the author) wrote this, events events events, the vague future, the past aka when they were Youths™️, the generalized timeline (y’know, canon?) - usually characterized in hrpf by events, milestones, and team personnel, and timeline what timeline.

Are you saying to yourself, gee she just listed a bunch of stuff I hope she defines it. Well good for you, that’s literally the rest of this monster. Buckle up I’m about to say way more words. I do not think I’m 100% accurate perfect no notes. I’m sure parts of it are bullshit. But hey I’m gonna close my eyes and post it anyway.

1. [Nebulous Now] - Hey remember that paragraph on recency bias? Welcome to recency bias the fic setting. In my head, the nebulous now is +/- the last two or three years. It’s set around present day* or going back only as far as the author was engaged in fandom. You’ll probably know when it’s set based on team makeup, season highlights, major events, but it’s basically meant to be set now. It may care about schedules and specific details but reserves the right to throw it out the window if it feels like it. The problem with being set now is when you run across a fic that is 5, 10, 15 years old and is supposed to still be set in whatever the current year is.

2. [Right Fucking Now] There is nothing nebulous about when this fic was written or what it was written about. These are usually smaller fics** where inspiring event happened anywhere from the day the writer started writing to at most a month or two ago. Usually precipitated by X did Y in Z game against team A and got celebratory gangbanged in the locker room about it. (Y being goals, hat tricks, fights, ect.). You can’t get more specific than this baby. Fics set before/during/after a specific game fit here. All Star Game fics written around the All Star Break are here. Milestone events are here, for example Tanger and Geno’s 1K games. Fics written immediately in reaction to stuff like Contract-gate go here. Most playoff fic that references specific events or was written during the playoffs falls under here. The main clarifying point is it wasn’t written very long after the fact. Anything written now about last years All Star Game, Contract-Gate, Sid slutting it up at worlds and the Olympics, all fall under a different category. Which is a great segue to my next one.

** I said usually smaller but sometimes an author decides to write a big fic about the narrative arc of the season and we love them for it.

3. [Events Events Events] - This is probably the one that is the biggest broadest category and the one I have the hardest time narrowing down despite having more examples than I can shake a stick at. Simply put, this category is for fics that are concerned with a specific event, usually big, but sometimes small. This can be any event that stands out in a reader/author’s head. Generally the fic was written after the event happened from a place of knowing how everything shakes out in canon. These fics can feel different because the we walk in already knowing the start and stop and major events of the fic. From the reader’s perspective the event is over but the characters experiencing the event don’t know it.

SidGeno/Pens Examples include: World Juniors. The Olympics/the golden goal/Sochi. The cup runs are a subcategory unto themselves but the playoffs/finals are a big event. Major injuries like Geno’s knee surgery and Sid’s concussion. Duper’s retirement tends to be a foot note in cup run stories but it’s a small event. Trades def count since there are absolutely stories about the before/after of a trade. Vegas & Seattle Expansion Drafts. The lockouts (05 & 2012). I’m ignoring that the pandemic-stoppage is also under this cause I don’t like reading about it. Contract-gate is a recent example. Basically if you’re asking “hey does this event count as an event” the answer is probably yes because you’ve remembered it. If you can point to something specific on the timeline and zoom in on it then it counts.

***this one I keep tweaking it’s definition and I’m still not 100% happy. I just keep thinking about all the fic I’ve read in other fandoms that feel beholden to canon in ways that I end up bemoaning the lack of creativity. Nobody says it has to happen this exact way every time but authors who claim to hate that installment still faithfully recreate it every time.

So we’ve had now, and we’ve had the events that everyone (or just you) remember, what’s next is literally what’s next.

4. [Vague Future] - Quite literally 1, 5, 10, 20 years in the future. Next season fics. Retirement and post-retirement fics. Their kids getting drafted fic is this. Anything that makes you think further ahead than the end of the current season is probably in this category. It’s vague because who the heck knows if it ends up true or not. There is of course overlap with the Nebulous Now because its nebulous. Since everything is set vaguely now-ish, it’s hard to tell when now starts becoming the future. The season just started and all through the preseason I saw people talking about who they think is going win the cup this year. There’s so much hockey to be played still. The future is vague but it will eventually become now.

Also remember it’s all about perspective. There’s tons of movies set in the far distant future of the late 2010s and they don’t match up to our lived reality. Going back to the comment about cognitive dissonance, sometimes you aren’t writing about an event from a place of knowing; sometimes it’s just your best guess or heartfelt wish. It’s so easy to say “oh that’s an au” when maybe it wasn’t an au when it was written, maybe it was intended to be accurate to the author’s best guess. Sometimes fics from the past were set in the future but that time has been passed by life and going back to read them is weird but cool. It’s interesting to see where people thought the boys were going vs where they are. Who could have guessed the core would have careers this long or decorated but they have.

Speaking of writing from a place of knowing; this next one is sort of a subcategory of events, but was a specific enough setting of fic I wanted to call it out.

5. [Youth™️] - This is anything where they are children. It may be well research but for the most part it’s probably non-accurate outside of the broad stokes. It’s the prologue and chapter 1. Pre-canon and the first 20 minutes. Kid!fic. It’s all about the kids in this one. This is the start of the story and the time before that.

Hrpf examples include anything about juniors, Sid’s time at shattuck, and World Juniors. For SidGeno I’d probably include the 03 to 05 drafts. Can include Sid’s first year in the NHL and Geno’s flight from Russia and his first full year in the NHL (that’s the hard cutoff for me personally). You could potentially argue up to and including the 08 & 09 cup runs as like the climax of them being young NHL stars, and yeah sure I’m not a cop write whatever you want if it makes sense to you then it makes sense. I don’t think Sid getting drafted is a bad place to start a fic, especially if you’re doing an AU. There’s always a good argument to start at the beginning of the canon story.

I’m highlighting this because holy crud the number of fics I’ve seen from other fandoms that don’t even like the early material but start at movie 1 scene 1/book 1 chapter 1 anyway. It’s fanfic we don’t have to start at the beginning. You can, but its not necessary. I personally struggle with fics that don’t change anything in early canon but require you to read their version of it anyway, but I’m just one person. You do you.

This next one doesn’t have a snazzy name because look sometimes there’s a timeline and you wanna write something that encompasses it. If it’s granular I’d say you’re talking about Eventsx3 or Right Fucking Now. Overlaps with Youth™️ because you have to start somewhere and Nebulous Now because now is on the timeline. If there are expected events on the timeline like retirement from professional sports, that’s the vague future.

6. [Timeline] Sometimes authors want to care about the timeline or the fic is set over weeks, months, years. Most canons have a specific set timeline and hrpf is no different. However ours is actual literal years rather than something someone created and is thus easy to navigate. For my examples I’m generalizing over the span of months and years and then grouping by big events rather than calling out any one specific event.

[the early years] Anything from Sid’s first year to the 09 cup. Let’s be real here, most authors either write incredibly detailed fic about the whole timeline, or they’ll only write about Sid or Geno’s first full NHL years or the 08-09 cup runs. Everything else is usually glossed over. The babies era. Youth™️

Events include: Sid and Geno’s drafts. The 05 lockout. Geno fleeing Russia. Losing streaks. Mario’s return and retirement. Flower and Tanger getting called up. Sid living at Mario’s. Geno living with Gonch and learning English. Sid being named Captain. Hard cutoff is after the 07-08 and 08-09 cup runs.****

****You can argue that the 08 & 09 cup runs are their own subcategory but this is already long enough imo.

[post cup - international success and dead years] - the middle years. You’re probably only going to read event fic set during this time unless it was written in the nebulous now of those years.

Events include: the golden goal/2010 olympics. Sid’s concussion. Geno’s knee surgery. The 2012 lockout. Geno playing at home in Russia during the lockout. I think Geno & Ovi had a memorable All Star Game in here. Socchi Olympics. Worlds 2015.***** Tanger’s stroke. Olli’s cancer. Geno getting married. Trades include I wanna say Jordy, Talbo, Lazy. Gonch is in Dallas but I don’t remember if he was traded. This is also the spacetoaster era. Sid spending several years building a house only to move back in with Mario due to post-concussion syndrome.

*****Sid winning at worlds is I think the end of this era cause Worlds kicked off Sid’s “winning everything that he could possibly win” era.

[the sully era] The 15-16 & 16-17 cup wins against San Jose and Nashville. The threepeat attempt in 2018 with its second round loss to the capitals. The vegas draft followed several years later by the seattle draft. Geno had a kid. Once you get past the cup runs this really blends into the nebulous now. Maybe it’s cause I stopped reading fic religiously sometime between 2019 and 2021 but aside from the covid pandemic which I very much do not like reading about, there’s not much here to highlight other than player milestones and trades, but don’t worry Sid and Geno have had a bunch of milestones.

[modern pensblr] - The covid stoppage, pandemic-hockey, and now. Anything from 2020 to the current 2023-24 season. Very much the nebulous now but there’s tons of milestones for our two headed monster/core trio to celebrate.

Okay I know I just spent a while being very “general with specific” but this next category is for the people who just don’t care about anything I’ve talked about.

7. [Timeline what timeline] - This is the one where authors simply don’t care about the “when” of their setting. It’s an outgrowth of the nebulous now but it’s less tied to canon. It may reference a season but it doesn’t have to and will often ignore actual team makeup because “this is my fanfic and if I want to ignore that trade I can.” Non-hockey aus (one or both s/g) will often fall under this since you need to answer who is playing center for the Penguins if Sid drives the zamboni. Straight up aus are kinda here but I don’t think fics that are fully an au setting like a college frat or space au really counts for this conversation since the au comes with its own time period that is wholly divorced from canon outside of the cast of characters. This is also where fics that go “I’m going to write my own canon” belong (ie Geno is a flyer, what if Pens drafted Ovi instead of Geno, what if X player got traded to Y team and hooked up with Z player). Timeline can matter for some of those fics, but most of them only care as much as it makes sense to make the fic make sense. The important timeline information is that hockey is happening (or it’s the off season and hockey isn’t happening). These are the fics where the Pens are always conveniently playing Washington when Geno needs advice from Ovi or Vegas when Sid needs similar from Flower. As long as the fic is internally consistent what does it matter if you’ve forgotten this or that timeline detail such as setting a timeline in the first place. Hockey itself is so intertwined with the specific routines of a season that you can divorce that routine from reality and just have hockey. Fall becomes winter becomes spring becomes the playoffs, what more can an author ask for?

Sombron's Cobra Dragon Form is a call-out to Buddhist Nagas. Or: wait, are Divine and Fell Dragons really that different?

Hello! I'm back with more info dump on the Buddhism going on in Fire Emblem, whee!!

Did you know that Naga isn't just a name given to the well-known Divine Dragon goddess of FE? Did you know that cobras are the original Naga in Buddhism? There's a funny relationship here.

The word, Naga, is originally a sanskrit word for a snake deity. This class of deities are depicted to be wise serpents, and there is a specific one known as Mucalinda who sheltered Buddha from rain and storm as he meditated to attain enlightenment. Which then leads into these depictions:

Nagas can be depicted as multiheaded or single headed, rarer partial or fully humans. Notably in South and Southeast Asian depictions, they are often cobras. Note the flaps on those necks. 100% a cobra.

But as you all might be aware, the Naga we know in Fire Emblem is a western dragon. Her daughter, Tiki, also is a western dragon.

Bonus: Engage Tiki is slightly different in being feathery. This form reminds me more of a jatayu/garuda but im not going down into that rabbit hole it's a WHOLE OTHER SHIT i dont want to explain rn @_@

Lumera of course, also fits into the class of Divine Dragon with a form like this:

Not at all serpent like. Meanwhile, Sombron is a truer depiction for the Buddhist depiction of a Naga with his less eagle-y and more... cobra head. Incidentally, Grima also qualifies as a closer depiction due having no limbs (wings aside iykyk). Left: Sombron. Right: Grima.

So what does that all mean? Well, two schools of thoughts from me.

At the time of development, the original Fire Emblems were always meant for a western lens. Fell Dragons at the time did not exist conceptually, and so the idea of a divine god dragon was decided to have a western look, in order to match the setting of the games.

Currently, this might be playing with the ideas of Dragons and 'true gods'. Fell Dragons are actually a more accurate depiction of the Buddhist Nagas, and Divine Dragons aren't. Based on this, nerds like me can go 'DIVINE DRAGON CONSPIRACY! WE WORSHIP THE FALSE GODS!' while being kinda correct about it as the devs giggle at my loser ass.

For the lore nerds who might have heard of this... The First Dragons. (Link the First Dragons gallery on fireemblem.fandom.com), and the FE multi-worlds. It could be entirely possible dragons are originally some space faring beings who decided to settle down on various FE worlds, having multiple different species with wildly different looks. As time went on, certain species died out while some survived, and took up the mantle of guiding humanity or just chilling and being worshiped.

Methinks Divine Dragons and Fell Dragons are just names given to them by mortals to differentiate either by appearance or factions. Engage has basically shown us that Fell Dragons aren't inherently evil, and there has been cases of Dragons who aren't perfect either.

As a side, because Buddhism falls under the Dharmic family of religion, Nagas are also depicted in Hinduism. Again, they are cobras who can be partial or fully snake and/or human, and are here assigned the domain of the underworld. Sombron's grand upheaval of Gradlon is a major call-out to this root, as his domain can be argued to be underground for the majority of the game. (Or underwater.)

Buddhism is so widespread that it has morphed and mixed with a lot of other culture and religions, and notably it has mixed with China's. Under the Mandate of Heaven, it is said that when an emperor witnesses a Dragon, it is a sign that the heavens have given them an approval and they would turn out to be excellent rulers. Asian dragons are also serpent-like, and this idea has also appeared in Southeast Asia and more importantly spread to this one country: Japan.

At the end of the day, I don't think Engage is keen in asking 'who is the real divine dragon?' but just messing around with those who know. And now you do.

not much point to this aside from me trying to explain how my vision works which can be frustrating at times when I work. even this isn't fully accurate because I can't depict the probable astigmatism over light or that my line of sight is lightly misaligned for just a bit (the vision on the left is upwards drifted compared to the right one) EDIT: Oh and slightly lacking warmer colors, which I did in the edit. I can still see warm but they are colder when viewed with just my left eye

There is not much I can do about my left eye post laser eye surgery from awhile back, there is no way to correct it more than they tried without seriously hurting the lens in the process (it went from about -11 to -4.5 ish so it's still and improvement). At least my right eye has an almost perfect vision but the blur of the left eye overlapping with the clear picture of the right eye so it makes it a little difficult to focus

I'm happy I can still draw and that I, despite the big optic difference of the two, no longer have constant headaches. But some days (like today) it tends to bonk me mentally

The tricky part is that this tends to make me doubt if something looks good or not, I can't trust my vision 100% even if I have to rely on it in art. I don't really let it bother me but it does make me often question if I'm just not seeing something or if something looks off, it throws me off a bit

It's fine tho. Frustration is temporary and I just usually resume with work despite the trouble (or take a break and rest my eyes if it's a bad day)

A bit strange how Revolver Magazine is asking every musician they get their hands on whats their favorite Ghost song, I mean imagine being someone as accomplished as Rob Halford and asked to talk about a band he would probably consider a new band lol. I get it tho Impera IS the album of the year and it gives good click bait

Anyway.. out of all the musicians (and there’s some pretty heavy hitters asked) this one so far is my favorite...

We had the carnal pleasure of doing two tours with Ghost last year, and have so many diabolical memories. It's not possible to express everything we feel about Ghost in just a few sentences. Let's just say we'll hold a black candle for Ghost for eternity — they're incredible humans and put on the best damned show… Makes even fallen angels cry. Personally, we love all their songs, but I'm spotlighting "Kiss the Go-Goat," since it's a 100-percent accurate depiction of the orgies I have personally attended, and the osculum infame is just one of the many reasons why I believe Satan to be a much better kisser than Jesus. - Alexandra James (Twin Temple)

ooh a Heather headcanon I’d love to hear your take on is transfemme Heather 💕

now that's a vibe i can get into. ironically i've been seeing heather (and a lot of the other girls tbh) as cisfem bc in my brain i do a lotta non-cis stuff generally so it's actually Novel for people to like... just be cis to me lol. like i do 43574398534953489 variations in my head and read various queer versions bc it's Good Food and when i finally get to posting myself i'm like "wait-- novel concept-- i make them cis. bc that's the thing LESS people are actually." (<- insane queer logic from the gay echo chamber)

but like i can See This i can Vibe This. heather to me is one of the few characters who you couldn't sell me on being really any kinda masc. like i'm more inclined to see and vibe on say, a transmasc chrissy variation than a heather. but transfemme works well for heather. she's got Femme Energies and so long as they're present in a depiction of her the world is your oyster. like i think say, transwoman!heather and it serves to me contrapoints energies which i love. she would explain like, the evils of capitalism in full beat, a pearl necklace and drinking campaign while in a tub full of milk, a lush bathbomb and rose petals.

it would also add in a LOT of turmoil for her at home tho since her dad's a misogynist and her mom's checked out from dealing with him for at minimum 17ish years. like feeling feminine but living in a house were you KNOW even LOOKING at Girl Stuff™ is gonna get you shit and hearing constantly this degrading shit about women/femininity/anything associated with either while like, that's everything you connect with would be so damaging to her psyche rip.

god this is unleashing my love tho of men/amab ppl who're aggressively feminine dfkgjhkfd. heather being the nuriko from fushigi yuugi of hawkins. not a man, not a woman, not a transwoman but a Secret Fourth Thing (too beautiful to be contained and objectively more good looking in a dress than any of you). amab!heather who gets into glam rock just so they can have an excuse to grow their hair out and wear make up and cute little outfits. who TOTALLY joins the cheerleading team to "get girls" and not bc they're you know, REALLY PUMPED ABOUT CHEER!!!! canonically sapphic! i feel like ive spoken before on her identity past that uhhh. i dont know what im on about?

Thoughts on their home life/family

maki comes across veryyy. edgy and like "oh duhhh this character has trauma they're wearing their pain on their sleeve" and so i worry her backstory is too. ouch the edge? but i think like... ultimately her relationship with her parents and her relationship with ryutaro are accurate to like... toxic households/what happens when ur a child abuse victim. even if what exactly Happened there is a bit more nonsensical, the dynamics portrayed are (hopefully) accurate depictions which hold weight because of what they're like, if not how they came to be.

thatsss meta reflection tho lol. for something in-universe... hm. how do i say things without spoiling. i think her being a big sister is very important to her and she wants to be like. part of the club with yamaguchi and hatano and uehara and etc etc. but her relationship with ryutaro is like. Explodes. so while the fact she's a big sibling is something that holds a lot of weight to her shes like. well i cant really call myself a big sibling now can i. hm. (<- dont worry about it its just the horrors ! )

How i feel about their canonical writing/handling

she's... a hard character for me to nail. this is something ive noticed with her and uehara both? its funny i used to feel fine with writing them but now im comfy writing yamaguchi and inori and not these two. ugh. buuuut.. i feel like i just need practice? maybe ill revisit that old maki fic.... i think i just need to spin her a bit in my head, and actually. im confident in her writing but not how i portray it. i need to do more to show that she's very... withdrawn and on the defense 90% of the time.

The one thing i’d want to make canon about them

hmm- OH. she and tsu would be/should be besties. but like. even in non despair itd take monthsss for them to be in the same social sphere + interacting enough to be besties. and in the kg tsu is busy trying to be bob the builder for everyones mental health ("can we fix it? yes we can!) and maki is Not Well. so. sadly no "pls my kids take care of ur ears look at ur talents oh lordy" besties :(...

To be completely honest, and I can only speak for myself, but I don't think most us want that fic to read an accurate depiction of cheating 😭😂

I think we are mostly interested by the SMUT and best friend Peter giving MJ what she wants and deserves, and I can assure you you are more than qualifies for that !

I get what you mean & thank you for the faith in me hahaha!! what I was saying is that the concept of disloyalty in relationships itself (even vague) doesn’t have too much of a sexy aspect to me!! I am in no way saying that anyone who wants to read that fic is wrong for that at ALL. But yeah all Im saying is the high vote for that trope really surprised me since I just don’t see the appeal over different tropes?

That doesn’t mean I won’t write it tho!! It’s not like I only write about things I’d also try/have tried irl. Like… I’ve never been part of a free use relationship but I think that the concept is hot as fuck! That sort of thing. All it is is personal taste and I brought up my husband bc I do think that my relationship with him has affected my view on those things.

About Lore Olympus

Before I start, may I list two huge disclaimers. ONE, LORE OLYMPUS IS NOT PERFECT AND FLAWLESS. NOTHING IS PERFECT AND FLAWLESS. And two, just so you know who's yelling at you. My town of birth and childhood is Eleusis, a small town outside of Athens with a huge pagan history especially on Demeter and Persephone, where the Eleusinian Mysteries took place and where the Well which Persephone uses to go from the mortal to the Underworld and vica versa. So, you may say that my life and experience and beliefs (since I'm also a witch) give me some extra knowledge on that myth and that's the knowledge I'll use below

Now, are the characters in Lore Olympus flawed? Yes. They are not perfect even though they're gods and they make mistakes and present human flaws. Why's that? BECAUSE IN THE ANCIENT GREEK CULTURE AND MYTHOLOGY, THE PROJECTION OF HUMAN FLAWS INTO DEITIES WAS SO COMMON THAT WE EVEN SEE IT IN HOMER!

Also, may I remind you that Greek mythology is that. Mythology. Not a Bible. There's no official text, only a thousand versions of stories that change from the time and place and narrator. There is not one official truth that's universally accepted. So, what if Lore Olympus is not 100% accurate? The myths aren't accurate either. And why is it so bad that Smythe made her work hers and not a Wikipedia page? It never says it's an accurate retelling.

Thirdly, STOP JUDGING THE CHARACTERS ON THE MORALS OF CHRISTIANITY. HELLENIC SOCIETIES AND CHRISTIANITY HAVE DIFFERENT VALUES. First off, there's no concept of good or bad because the gods are flawed. There are some unbreakable unofficial rules, such as never leaving a dead body without a funeral or the rule of hybris. But, several things which the characters do are bad in the face of Christianity but fairly okay in the Hellenistic moral compass.

In addition and especially on Apollo. He's not the villain (even though he's often depicted as such and that's some Christian bs), he's just another flawed character like everyone else. Calling him a villain is putting Christian ideas into something that not only existed before chirstianity but was deeply hurt by Christianity. And, because I've heard that, Apollo from Lore Olympus is not the deity Apollo that people worship. And if you hate on a worshipper of Apollo based on just a comic, you may set your router on fire.

And lastly, you ableistic shits. Rachel Smythe has admitted that her drawing style is dynamic and on the heat of the moment and not consistent and that she has dyslexia. So, YOU'LL SEE SOME INCONSISTENCIES AND SPELLING ERRORS. HATING HER ON IT IS NOT ONLY IGNORANT BUT ALSO ABLEISTIC AND, AS ANOTHER DYSLEXIC WRITER, I WILL FUCKING SMITE YOU. What you do there is not criticism, unless pointing at the disabled kid in the schoolyard and laughing at them is what you shits call "criticism".

And, if you hate a comic so much, why do you spend your time and energy on hating it and not on something you love? You will find that your mood will get better, trust me. And if you used to hyperfixate and now hate it, find something else. The fact that you now hate it means the hyperfixation ended and you have to move on and find something that makes you feel better and makes you genuinely happy.

And, lastly, I acknowledge that Lore Olympus has flaws. Some I can list are, the way Apollo is villainized, the way the s.a. is treated, the way the toxic and abusive relationships and friendships are treated and the way trauma is treated. Tho, it is obvious that those flaws are rooted in little knowledge and not bad intends. There are warnings every time those are there and it is not done with a bad intend but just a lack of proper knowledge. But throwing tomatoes is not how this is fixed, but by letting the creator know with a way that shows that our intend is to make the work better, not tear it apart.

Like I said before. Those four minutes w Elliot could’ve been dedicated to a scene of Cassie getting her shit rocked or a clearer ending to the Fez plot. Or idk maybe on top of a scene or something. It made me realize I lowkey couldn’t ever date a ukulele/musician boi. No hate to Fike, he’s got charms and I’m sure he’s hella talented but like wtf lol. I started scrolling thru my phone ngl like that rlly hurt the flow of the episode

Speaking of Elliot/Jules/Rue, they genuinely would’ve made a cute asf polyam throuple if everybody just communicated. If only E and J weren’t fuckin snakes. But like this doesn’t excuse R either tho lol I’m not defending her actions or anything

I 100% would throw hands with Cassie Howard. Like, it is on SIGHT. I’ve never felt more seen and heard and related a lil bit too much w Maddy this season. The hurt, the betrayal, and the way it was portrayed was *chefs kiss*. Having said that, Sydney Sweeney is so fuckin pretty. Like maybe it’s just my dumb gae brain but like, even when she’s playing Cassie at her lowest of lows and screaming, crying, red, and spitting, etc she’s just. Absolutely gorgeous

The absolute shattering of the Jacob’s family was also gold. The cracks were barely held together by the principal of everyone just internalizing everything and keeping secrets but the moment one person (Cal) cracked everrrryone started too. Nate’s ma definitely has more potential for story. I support the Ashtray is a Jacobs theory but like… not sure if that story is ever gonna be told after what happened.

Whoever came up with Fexi deserves a raise. Those two are ADORABLE and the actors’ chemistry is g o l d e n. They’re the sweetest and it’s cool how Lexi even acknowledges the Sidekick thing because it’s so clearly depicted in the Fexi storyline too.

Ethan is the comeback king. Vv disappointed with how Kat acted this season but that scene with her in her room all by herself but these figures in her head was done so good and so accurately.

Idk I’m sure I’ve got more to say it just hasn’t come to mind

What is your opinion on the movie Split, if you have seen it, with regards to how it depicts DID? Because like I feel like someone with DID would be offended but at the same time don’t KNOW whether they actually would be? Like when I see anti-asexual or anti-Irish sentiment and think “Hmm. Well that is certainly offensive from an objective viewpoint, but am I personally offended?” I do feel like if the twist behind the ‘Beast’ alter being superhuman was that he had been bitten by a werewolf, because there were so many hints towards him being a werewolf and the whole backstory they gave the protagonist about being a hunter, I feel like it would have suited the story better and avoided the ‘all people with DID are evil’ trope. Am I saying this right?

I honestly don't give a shit about it's depiction of DID if I'm being 100% honest. It didn't bring anything new to the table or introduce anything that hasn't been said or in the public consciousnesses. While I definitely don't think depictions like that do anything good for DID, I don't think they have the same level of impact that people act like they do.

I can't imagine any scenario in which someone would watch a movie like Split and think "yeah that's probably how DID works," like if I disclosed my diagnosis to someone and they thought I could climb up walls or whatever that would give me more concerns than "wow that's an offensive idea of DID."

Counter to that, I personally find some depictions of DID made by people with DID (or supposedly with DID) more offensive than Split. Things like TikTok or YouTube videos where alters are all super defined, switches are clear, all the parts are fun and cute and it's just presented as "LOL fun people in my head! Watch different alters react to flaming hot Cheetos!" Or "informational" posts about "how to react to someone with DID" that say things like "ask who's fronting! Don't act entitled to niceness from all alters! Give stuffies to littles!" are for me, far more offensive mostly due to them being more, IDK, realistic? Or grounded or believable. Like someone is more likely to believe I want to be greeted by part name all the time than they are to believe I have an alter that can bend steel bars. Maybe that's that person's experience, but they're often framed more as a "universal" experience with DID, which is worse than smth like Split, or even smth like that documentary about that murderer with DID, because both of those are sort of like. About one specific person more than they are about DID on a whole I guess? Or present themself as such.

I did think it was a shitty movie just from a movie standpoint LMAO. It was just kinda boring.

But also when it comes to media in general I think people do put a lot of undue weight on it, sorta putting the cart before the horse and focusing on the wrong things. Like I honestly rly enjoy United States of Tara even tho it's like, in my experience not really accurate at all to my experience with DID or a lot of people I know. It's entertaining, and IMO that's the main like, priority with media. And like, re:cart before the horse, it's almost like acting like Sixteen Candles' depiction of an Asian man is why those stereotypes exist, as opposed to that depiction being a reflection of already-existing racist ideas.

I also really love Fight Club, even though it (if you look at it through the Tumblr-typical very narrow lens and strip all nuance from it) could be said to fit some offensive stereotypes I guess. It's to date one of the best depictions of dissociation and confusion about time loss stuff I've found describing my experience. I related to it really hard NGL.

I guess the TLDR here is that I think there's a diff between "offensive" and "inaccurate" as well as a difference between smth being offensive in a hypothetical way as opposed to offensive in a way that like. Actually matters. I think people get really caught up in media stuff bc they have Tumblr fandom discourse disease and it's an easy thing to be like "that bad" as opposed to things more nuanced.

They tracked down and brought to justice MAJOR Nazis... OR you want the intense fighting and/or gore that Hunters’ has?

Watch Defiance on Netflix. Based accurately on a true story, this R-rated film follows the Bielski brothers as they form and protect a band of Jewish partisans in the forests of what is now Belarus. It’s rated R for a reason. They fought back.

Thinking of watching The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas? Don’t. Educate yourself about Witold Pilecki, who actually did sneak into Auschwitz in order to gain intelligence and report on its horrors... OR you want a film that depicts the average German citizen’s POV while juxtaposing that of the plight of the Jewish people?

Watch the tv miniseries Holocaust. It’s better... just so. much. better. Historians joke that it had more of an effect on the American public than the ACTUAL Holocaust. It’s long and not available to stream, but so worth the extra effort.

Thinking of watching Schindler’s List? You should. You really should.
