was looking on ao3 for some kataang fics and saw yet another zvtara fic in our tag and clicked on it because I’m a hater first and foremost but my god…
Tumblr media
LMAO
nah… the way they project this idea that Aang views Katara as a machine to repopulate the airbenders when not once did he or will he ever act that way canonically. holy shit I just??? where the actual fuck does this concept even come from? they want Katara to be his abuse victim sooooooo bad 😂
Tumblr media
and what the cinnamon toast fuck is this passage in particular?
“Should he not sacrifice as well?”
ummmmm…. I hate to break it to you fic author, but Aang literally did sacrifice. he legitimately lost everything there is to fucking lose. he even lost the clothes off his back and the only artifact that his people made specifically for him. he fucking burned it at the bottom of a volcano. or did you forget? actually nvm, you probably never watched in the first place so of course you wouldn’t know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like ppl can write whatever they want idc, but acting like Aang, a character who is a sole survivor of fucking genocide never LOST or suffered or sacrificed anything? be so fucking serious rn. get out of my damn face. like you can fuckin ship your ship without committing the most egregious and genuinely offensive character assassination possible

Reply Roundup: All Over The Place Edition
Had a couple of questions piling up over time, so I’m gonna get to them all in one place! No theme to this Reply Roundup because there’s a lot of different scraps today
@halogenwarrior for Bonefall TNP: “How long will Frostfur and Wildfur live?”
For Frostfur, she can survive up to early OotS without a problem. I’m keeping her in mind as a body to toss into a major epidemic, she will probably die in one of the Color Cough outbreaks at the beginning and end of Po3. That said, I’m keeping her in mind as a possible kill for TNP, too. In any case, she won’t be left behind at the Forest Territory.
For Wildfur, he will no longer die of chest complications! There’s no need to kill him as a warning for Briarlight in the future. He’s getting a simple mobility device and he will be making the journey as a respected ShadowClan elder. He’s not getting a BIG role, it’s just nice to just have some disabled characters in the background. He’ll either die peacefully just before Briar’s injury, or shortly after giving her some practical advice.
@halogenwarrior for Bonefall TPB: “Since Cloudtail is now Firestar’s adopted son, does Cloudpaw have a new mentor?“
This is a special case where a father figure mentors their son. It’s not forbidden under the code, just usually counterproductive to the social purpose of Mentor/Apprentice relationships.
But here, the reason this taboo is being broken is because Bluestar is trying to make Firestar eligible for deputyship as quickly as possible. It’s not that she expects Tigerstar to betray her the way he does... but she also isn’t stupid. There’s a prophecy about Fire Alone saving the Clan, there’s at least suspicion about this deputy, and there’s constant war, disease, famine...
Things can change fast. Best to be prepared, and make sure that there’s no way to dispute Fireheart’s legitimacy under the Law of the Deputy (AND THEN SHE JUST WAITS A WHOLE DAY AFTER TIGER’S BETRAYAL, CASTING DOUBT ON HIS LEGITIMACY ANYWAY)
And besides, Fireheart brought this extra kittypet to ThunderClan. Bluestar also expects him to make it into a warrior as well.
TL;DR outstanding circumstance, mentor remains Fireheart.
@hehhdhejdudues “Why are Runningnose, Frecklewish, and Ravenwing in the Dark Forest?“
Runningnose is a Bad Boy in this rewrite, Frecklewish and Ravenwing are sent to the Dark Forest because of StarClan’s clouded judgement due to their mob-like fury about the Mapleshade situation.
There are lots of reasons to end up in the Dark Forest in this rewrite, but it’s also not as bad as canon. There’s even cats who go there in protest of StarClan.
@halogenwarrior “Is Hawkfrost and Reedwhisker’s age gap too steep?”
No, don’t worry, I went and charted it out. Reedwhisker is noted as a toothless kitten when Fireheart saves him from the river, meaning he’s less than 3 weeks old in Forest of Secrets (leopardstar’s humdrum made him older but we dont respect that book or its retcons). So, he’s a few weeks older than Bramble and Tawny.
Even if we went by the official wiki estimate, at most, Reed and Hawk are 1 year apart in age. Going by the toothless-kitten evidence, it’s somewhere near 9 months. That’s well below my 4-year-cutoff.
If Reedwhisker was a warrior, the small age gap WOULD still be an issue because of the power dynamic. However, add in the fact that Reed is forced to stay as an apprentice for an entire year because of Skyheart, there’s no problematic power dynamic at play here. It all checks out.
Aaaand for this last one, I’m going to talk a bit about ex-TigerClan supporters and Thistle Law in a serious discussion about fascism so this one’s going under a cut. TW for Fascism and all the racism, sexism, and xenophobia that comes with that, with a real-world example.
What exactly do RiverClan cats besides Hawkfrost (who wants an ally in his bids for power) get out of the WindClan rebellion? I would think their aggression and xenophobia would make them unhappy to get a leader who is also aggressive and xenophobic, but against THEM. Xenophobes won't be allies of other xenophobes from the very groups they are prejudiced against.
@halogenwarrior
Much like real-world fascism, Thistle Law looks different between its incarnations. Supporters of Tigerstar’s brand of Thistle Law are committed to annexing other Clans into one unit, to enforce a standard of purity into itself. Blackclaw, Reedtail, Heavystep, and the rest of Hawkfrost’s RiverClan reinforcements want a second TigerClan.
In its simplest explanation, I could leave it there. Anything that gets them closer to TigerClan 2 is their goal.
In addition though, I think it’s very important to remember that bigotry is not logical, consistent, or principled. Prejudice is irrational. Fascists only understand power and will work with groups they're actively bigoted against, until the exact moment they don’t have to anymore.
So, I flatly disagree with the idea that xenophobes don’t ally with other xenophobes of the groups they are prejudiced against. That’s actually one of the things Fascists are known for, worming their way into other movements by breaking off prejudiced subgroups. Terfs are the well-known example, antisemitic minorities are another. If fascists take power, they will turn against the JK Rowlings and Kanye Wests who were previously useful. They don’t reject the help before that point.
I could get into deeper historical examples about this, this tactic is as old as the term Fascism itself. But I’ll leave it there for now because it’s already gotten heavy.
Just know this is a topic I care immensely about. I put more effort into this aspect of my rewrite than anything else, because I think it is the most important thing I’m doing with it.
Back to Funnie Battle Cat though,
Mudclaw thinks the RiverClan cats are united in helping to get rid of Onewhisker, and fight the encroach of Firestar’s influence. Accepting all these outsiders (thinking about this part i should definitely give windclan an ex-bloodclan member), giving away land peacefully, all this inter-clan mingling... He was willing to give Hawkfrost deputyship to get his supporters on his side for that push. I do really like Winds of Change, but one thing I reject about canon is the idea that Mudclaw was just... completely Bamboozled by Hawkfrost and really had the interests of his Clan at heart.
Like, no lol. You were going to make a total stranger your deputy so you could have more claws to kill Onestar’s supporters with. The inciting incident for the assassination was finding out StarClan was going to speak to him-- totally abandoning the idea that StarClan would sort this out if One, Fire, and Bramble were all lying about Tallstar’s switch. “Best interests of his clan” yeah right.
Hawkfrost’s plan was to get deputyship in WindClan, and then present this to Leopardstar as evidence of his capability. He is actually right that this would impress Bonefall Leopardstar, and set the stage to start merging the two Clans.

Why did this show become so xenophobic and orientalist and all "All Russian People Are Evil And We Can Happily Mow Them Down Like Our Manly American Hero Hopper Does, Minus This One Exception" and "Black Girls Says Capitalism Good"?
This has bad faith question vibes, but it's making a fair point and I do have some thoughts on the subject.
The specific nostalgia that inspired Stranger Things is not for the real 1980s. It's for the media of the 1980s. It's E.T. and Stand By Me and The Goonies and Red Dawn and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Hawkins doesn't exist in actual Indiana. It can't be a set distance from Indianapolis or Chicago. It is both a small rural town and a commuter suburb as needed. It's in the same world as Shermer, Illinois (John Hughes' fictional Chicago suburb).
The thing about 80s media? That xenophobia and orientalism is baked into it.
Russians are the nameless, faceless mooks that the hero can mow down without anyone questioning his morals. Sometimes you get a defector, but even they are often shown to have questionable morals (or are from one of the Soviet satellite countries like Ukraine). Communism was an unquestioned evil and so was anyone associated with it, even if that association consisted solely of nationality.
When racism is addressed in 80s movies it's as individual bad actors. Typically irredeemable villains where their racism is used to show the audience that this is a bad guy, though sometimes it shows up as a white character learning a very special lesson. It's never systemic unless it's coming from somewhere else: a foreign country or the past. (That's just anti Black racism. Anti Asian racism is often just there as a joke.)
The Duffers have improved on their source material. They don't gloss over rape or frame it as a positive (*cough*Sixteen Candles*cough*). They don't use racist stereotypes for cheap laughs (*cough*Sixteen Candles*cough*).
But they haven't fully deconstructed the media they clearly love so much. They still frame a father controlling his daughter's dating life as good. They still treat racism as a problem of individuals and not one of society. There is still the veneration of the wholesome small town, as directly contrasted to the interfering federal government.
Stranger Things is a celebration of 80s media and the culture that produced it, not a critique. And that's why it's like that.

Greetings fair traveler! Welcome to my blog! I'm happy to have you, why don't you stay a while?
(If you're looking for my masterlist, it's at the bottom of this post)
Tumblr media
About Me!
-You can call me Firefly :)
-I'm genderqueer and I use all pronouns
-This isn't just an agere blog, but I am an age regressor and I do make some agere posts and reblog agere content
-I do swear and reblog mildly nsfw content (such as sexual jokes and objective conversations about the morality of sexuality. Nothing explicit, and zero pornographic art, writing, videos, or photos)
-Ddlg, abdl, and other de-aging kinks are not welcome on my blog. Do not interact if you are going to sexualize or hate on age regression
Tumblr media
Requests
I love getting requests!! If you want to request a fic, moodboard, or DNI banner don't be shy! This blog is mainly agere, but I do other stuff too.
The fandoms I work with are:
-MCU/Marvel Comics
-She-Ra
-All Riordanverse fandoms except Kane Chronicles
-The Owl House
-Adventure Time
-Crier's War
-Bee and Puppycat
-The Song of Achilles
-The Outsiders
-Stranger Things
-Gone
-Heartstopper
-Over the Garden Wall

Fics
I will only write oneshots, however the length of which can vary and is usually 1000-4000 words.
I will not write:
Incest
Pedophilia
Romantic couples under the age of fourteen
Smut or kink of any kind
Breastfeeding
Padded agere (there's nothing wrong with it but it does attract creeps outside the community)
Pro ED, SH, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, antiseminism, xenophobia, rape/non-con, fatphobia, or ableism (I will still write these things, but not in a positive light)
Certain characters (you can always send me an ask about which characters in a fandom I will not write)
I will write:
SFW agere
Y/N
Mild to moderate gore (blood, stab/bullet wounds, infections, etc.)
Heavy angst (including the angst tropes listed previously, as long as it is not shown in a positive light)
Major character death
Basically any trope that isn't on the previous list
Moodboards
I will do moodboards for whole fandoms, aesthetics, places, time periods, fictional ships, fictional characters, and (positive or neutral) stereotypes. I can even do moodboards of certain headcanons. If you have a request that isn't listed, just message me, I'll probably do it so long as it is sfw.
DNI Banners
Unlike fic and moodboard requests, I'll do a DNI banner for any character in any fandom, even if it is not listed above. I'll even make one for groups of people. Heck, I'll do one for an object if you want. The default for my banners is "____ Protects this Blog NSFW DNI" If you would like it to say something else let me know.
Don't feel bad if your request (for any of the above categories) is very specific! I love specific requests, they actually make my life so much easier, so don't be shy to specify exactly what you want.

On the Topic of Crosshair
As we all know, I am a Crosshair simp. I think that his character as both a hero and a villain is compelling and I'm hopeful that we will get to see more of his character in the future.
Having said that, the things he has done under the Empire are bad. Full stop. That is not up for discussion.
I have seen Crosshair compared to both Maul and Thrawn as "hot villains" who have done objectively bad things and you acknowledge those things as bad. I think this is the group we should put him in if it is revealed that his chip has been removed and this is being done of his own free will. In that case, I firmly believe that he is an incredibly compelling villain, but a villain nonetheless who has committed and will continue to commit atrocities for as long as he is allowed.
If we find out in the season finale that Crosshair is still being controlled by his inhibitor chip (as I firmly suspect he is), and they remove his chip and set him up as a heroic character once more, I would say that his character is closer to Kallus from Rebels. Even if he returns to the Batch and fights against the Empire, he has still done bad things.
As much as I would love to have the writers acknowledge the bad things Crosshair has done, I'm skeptical that this will happen. As consumers of media, I think it's important that we all recognize that, even if he is rescued and works against the Empire, the bad things he did while working for them are not erased or corrected. Realistically, if Crosshair truly feels remorse for his actions, we would get a whole season's worth of him grappling with the knowledge that he has caused irreparable harm. Like I said, I don't believe that the writers are going to put that into the show, at least not in the volumes that I think would be appropriate. Star Wars has a history of letting villains get redeemed without them having to face the fact that they've done bad things (*cough* Kylo Ren *cough*) and I hope that Crosshair will be reintegrated into the heroes without being "redeemed" and instead has to grapple constantly with the bad things that he's done.
To conclude:
You can like Crosshair as a villain.
Crosshair has done bad things, whether of his own free will or because he is being controlled by his chip.
Even if Crosshair is saved, he has still done bad things, and those bad things won't get erased just because he starts working with the Batch again.
As much as I'd love to see everyone back together and happy and whole again, that kind of story would require ignoring the damage Crosshair has done, and it isn't right to do that. We, as a fandom, have to acknowledge the bad things he's done, even when the writers try to justify/retcon/redeem him.
Lastly, I'd like to say that I will tolerate absolutely no racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, or pro-facist sentiments on my blog. Non-negotiable. End of story.

Note
why are so many rad-orbiters racist?? goddamn
partially the fault of some radfems for aligning with and getting comfortable with right wingers bc "well we agree on TRAs so we can put our differences aside for that!" (we can't actually, autonomy rights & womens rights are one of the core values lol); partially because many of these people see how TRA-focused a lot of radfem blogs & accounts are (+ anti-porn & anti-prostitution), and they follow them for that reason & are followed back by radfems for having the same criticisms.
i honestly think if more radfems placed focus on woc and the issues of racism & xenophobia more on their blogs, such people wouldn't feel comfortable following them and will eventually get sick of them & we'll stop having this issue. but even suggesting that leads to some whitefems (some who will pretend to be 'MENA diaspora' *cough rad-bad-etc* when convenient) arguing "waaah why should women have to care about EVERY movement?!" as if.. woc aren't women who should be included & viewed as integral to feminism.

The Great Ace Attorney Playthrough: The Adventure of the Great Departure (Part 1)
So it’s finally here, The Great Ace Attorney! I know practically nothing about this game, except that it’s a) set in Victorian London, b) has the themes of racism and xenophobia you’d expect from a game where you play a Japanese immigrant in Victorian London, and c) features Herlock Sholmes the himbo detective! (Also I think there might be a cereal killer plot, but I’m not too sure.)
Right away I’m being given a lot of very useful information regarding the historical setting for this game. Unfortunately I’m unable to fully process it because two seconds in and I’ve already been accused of murder!
Tumblr media
Oh Ace Attorney how I’ve missed you.
Tumblr media
Hello Kazuma! I like the way your headband billows even though there’s no wind, and I hope you have a much longer and fuller life than my last Ace Attorney mentor.
Ok so it seems like we’re both students at the same university, but Kazuma is the protégé golden boy, who’s about to be sent abroad because he’s just That Good. Fortunately I (Ryunosuke) am his beloved best friend, and will therefore be allowed to tag along (which is a really damn good job because I’m the one front and centre of the box).
Say what you will about incredible aura, but I’m pretty sure Kazuma’s just set up some sort of fan mechanism under there.
Tumblr media
Hello Pink Lady from the box!
As a seasoned Ace Attorney player I am immediately suspicious of anyone from the first case who isn’t a main character. I’m watching you professor!
Ok so from what I can gather from our exchange the Professor Mikotoba is the forensics pathology professor at the university (I wonder if his daughter, or whoever the pink lady is, will be our Ema Skye), and if Kazuma the golden boy takes our case an loses he won’t get to go fulfill his dream of studying abroad.
Frankly, from all their idealistic chatter about jolly old Britain, I feel like these boys might be in for a bit of a rude awakening once they actually make it to London. And I’m not sure Ryunosuke, with all his beautiful naïve innocence, is going to do too well.
And speaking of beautiful naïve innocence...
Tumblr media
No Ryunosuke! Don’t agree to things like that!
I’m beginning to suspect Ryunosuke’s just being used as bait for Kazuma. Like someone out there really doesn’t want Kazuma to go abroad for some reason, and so they’re using his less good best friend to trap him in the country.
Oh Ryunosuke...
Tumblr media
In all my years playing Ace Attorney I have never been more torn by a suggestion box. On one hand, the first time I play an Ace Attorney game, I try and play it in the way it should be played. And so, even though this is an UNBELIEVABLY STUPID DECISION, I feel like Ryunosuke, a man who doesn’t seem to have the words ‘Set Up’ in his dictionary, would not even hesitate to bellow I do because Professor Mikiller told him to.
On the other hand this is an UNBELIEVABLY STUPID DECISION and Kazuma should clearly be in charge.
Ok, I’ve decided I’m going to press it (partly because I think the game might punish me if I don’t) but I will have my head in my hands as I do so.
Tumblr media
See Kazuma agrees with me.
Oh fuck, the victims John Watson Wilson!!!
Ok, so I’m re-evaluating my assumption that I (Ryunosuke) was simply bait for Kazuma, it looks like I was instead the poor expendable mug who can be pinned with causing an international incident. Is it bad that I feel like I’ve been promoted?
My god, everyone must have had a heart attack when Kazuma the Golden Boy stepped up to defend me. No wonder they didn’t want him involved!
Ok let’s bring out Professor Mikotoba the witness, so he can explain how he’s played us like a damn fiddle-
Tumblr media
WHO THE HELL IS THAT!?!
I would like to take this opportunity to apologies to Professor Mikotoba, who is I can only assume a beloved recurring character. I’m very sorry sir but I did not see you on the box. Yes I understand that, as someone who’s favorite character is Gumshoe, this was no excuse. Please forgive me.
Side note though: Satoru’s whole *hacks up blood* ‘It’s nothing, this just happens sometimes, please ignore it and continue’ thing is the most relatable thing I’ve seen so far. As someone with a chest condition whose lungs sometimes just bleed, this is literally the response you develop. I know this guys probably a murderer and that’s probably Crime Related Blood, but for now the two of us understand each other.
Ok, so from that cross examination we’ve got one mysterious lady the waiter says he never saw, one unwillingly received Buisness card from Satoru Hosonaga, and one coughing fit my lungs started after watching Satoru wheezing away.
Tumblr media
WHAT IS THIS!!??!!
MORE WITNESSES!!??!!
ON A FIRST CASE??!!!
DO THE SACRED LAWS OF FIRST ACE ATTORNEY CASES MEAN NOTHING TO THIS GAME!?!??
This is a neat mechanic though, and one I’ve been hoping would make it to a cannon Ace Attorney game since the Professor Layton crossover. It seems like we’re just sticking to standard testimony listening for now, rather than checking between reactions, but I’m very happy to see it’s return.
Tumblr media
GET HIS ASS KAZUMA!!!
(Kazuma’s quickly becoming my favourite, it’s a lot of fun to have the Edgeworth over your side of the courtroom for once)
Ok, so Kazuma (who’s name my iPad now autocorrects into all caps) has shown me how to examine evidence, meaning that if I had, shall we say, a receipt with the word Maya written on it, I could turn it over to see what was written on the other side.
So, while I now know that Dr Watson Wilson wasn’t able to have tucked into that big juicy steak behind him, I just want to check that business card Satoru was so unhappy to give away...
Tumblr media
Interesting...
I don’t know what this means, but it sure is interesting...
Now back to slamming an old man with a stolen coin (that was probably taken by the penniless guy next to him)
Tumblr media
I’m not sure how he’s managed it, but Auchi has somehow become the most slapable of the Pains.
Tumblr media
GET THEIR ASS RYUNOSUKE!!!
(I like how his desk slam’s changed as he gets more confident)
Tumblr media
DAMN STRAIGHT WE’D TAKE ON THE GOVERNMENT!!!
So there’s been a coverup! Well that explains the detective posing as a waiter, but it still leaves a huge question mark over the identity of the woman in question. Other than possibly Satoru, who I can’t see as having any reason to dress up, I don’t feel like any of the current witnesses could fit the bill. Whoever she is, though, it must be someone who’s involvement could cause more problems if she was found out, which would mean that she’s either someone with a lot of political influence in Japan, or she’s someone who followed the good Dr from England (and might well have a lot of influence there).
Either way I’m beginning to suspect that, in great break from Ace Attorney tradition, NONE OF THE WITNESSES COMMITTED THE CRIME!!! (Or at least not this one.)
Tumblr media
Don’t worry Kazuma, I turned the receipt business card over this time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Screenshots don’t do this justice.
I don’t know what makes this better, Ryunosuke’s cheerful mile wide supposition, or the speed at which Satoru cut him off.
Tumblr media
...are they Satoru? Are they really?
At this point I would apologies to Satoru Hosonaga, however I feel like he might have been using me as the scape goat for this murder, so I’m going to say that I’m not sorry. (We still have a weird blood related understanding though, and for that reason I am not as hostile as I might have been)
Tumblr media
Yeah, that’s fair Ryunosuke.
WAIT WHAT!?!
Tumblr media
Oh, it’s just a flash back gunshot. I thought someone had just whipped out a gun and shot the detective before he could say another word!
Tumblr media
Oh dear, this goes all the way to the top doesn’t it?
Poor Ryunosuke though, he’s not even made it to the stinky rainy streets of London and already his illusions about justice are being shattered. Given that this is effectively the prologue case, I dread to see what comes next.
Tumblr media
HELL YEAH JUGE, WERE GETTING THE KILLER LADS!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SATURO HOSONAGA YOU’RE BACK ON THE CHRISTMAS CARD LIST (but on thin ice)
‘So it won’t be a problem?’ Ryunosuke, weren’t you listening, it’s going to be a massive problem! Fortunately everyone else in this courtroom has just decided that you know what fuck the government actually, and so we’re doing it anyway!
Tumblr media
Hosonaga’s trying really hard to win me back over folks, and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t working.
Tumblr media
I like this hardass judge! I’ll send him a Christmas card too.
MADE IT TO THE FIRST HALF!

Covid-19 and Racism
I've been thinking about this a lot lately but this virus is bringing out the worst in people. Yesterday I was talking to my coworker. One of my favorite people. He always has a smile on his face. Hes one of the smartest people I know and is one of the most compassionate and caring employees that we have. To ALL of our patients. Even the BIGGEST assholes. I have never seen him with anything but a smile on his face. Well the topic of the virus came up and we were talking about trying to protect ourselves especially with the shortage of masks and cleaning supplies (due to the public stealing and hoarding so please stop) and he stopped smiling. And I will never forget the look on his face. He told me that he had a patient who refused to let him touch him. Who refused to let him anywhere near him. Simply because he was asian. He looked like he was about to cry. And I thought back. Any time I would cough because of my horrible allergies people would back away from me and give me a look. Just because I'm asian.
After work I called my friend, another healthcare worker because I was upset about everything and knew he would understand. He told me he was seeing the exact same thing. He is white but he was seeing patients in the hospital treating other patients the exact same way. He said patients would refuse to let Asians into the elevators and waiting rooms because somehow being Asian means they are contagious and will infect them. We are being called dirty and treated like shit just because we are Asian and it needs to stop.
There is xenophobia in the world. And this virus is bringing out the worst in people.

also god i wish i was able to form coherent thoughts about my rough idea as to why i feel japan's fanservice is just different than the west's fanservice but all i can seem to cough up is "japan has a different history with sex than the west does" and im too white/not native to the culture to really explain how in any depth greater than "no christianity means sex isn't shameful" but basically i feel like a lot of the west sees some fanservicey anime as more sexual than it actually is
Oh yes, that’s a valid take, too. Hypersexualization in anime is certainly a Thing™, but it’s not the thing that people in the west always insist on.
Japanese culture surrounding sex is extremely, extremely foreign to Westerners, and we have a habit of misinterpreting it through our own lenses, too.
EG: the “sex as a metaphor for the sensory pleasure of food” thing that we see a lot on Food Wars is often derided by people as proof that “even a kid’s show about cooking competitions is turned into porn,” but the thing is… it’s not turned into porn. It’s simply using a visual metaphor in an effective manner, but the US’s attitude towards sex–along with a lot of the rest of the west but not nearly to the same extent–means that we refuse to perceive sexuality as an acceptable metaphor for other sensory pleasures.
That’s not to say there aren’t exploitative fan service elements in anime: of course there are. But not to the extreme that people in the West like to pretend, because in US media–and to a lesser extent other western media–sex automatically leads to dehumanization because it’s considered sinful/monstrous. There’s a sex-to-dehumanization pathway in Japanese media too, but it’s not as direct. So, not all sexuality in anime leads to dehumanization in Japan.
However! That brings us right back around to the fact that western audiences for anime are often isolated from progressive sexual politics AND are western. So that sex-to-dehumanization-in-one-step pathway is still very much active in Western audiences, and the left’s decision to mark anime fans are inherently monstrous as a result… makes them easier to target by fascists.
Encouraging isolation and preventing recovery from unhealthy sexuality by demonizing all sexuality just makes fascism stronger, and it’s very frustrating to see the extra helping of xenophobia and racism slathered on top of that.

A perspective on the forewarning fascist iconography in GoT
Tumblr media
Was it yesterday ? I reacted to a mind-provoking aesthetic analysis of GoT reblogged by @felixthemudnescat ... which basically no one reacted to (LOL) but... chatting with @scratchybeardsweetmouth and @ser-jorah-the-andal, I felt like revisiting it to add observations to my initial reaction. Even if it’s too heavy-meta for such a beautiful summer day. @felixthemudnescat pardon me for not using the reblog button cause I want to do this under the dot-dot-dot so as not to weigh down the usual degree of levity in our tumblr group ;-)
Also I only realized today that you actually reblogged without commenting and I assumed, maybe wrongly, that you adhered completely to what you reblogged. And that might not be the case, so I’ll alter my text accordingly...
So here we go... (my input comes at the end)
Anonymous asked:
Girl. Gurl. Who the fuck is Leni Riefenstahl? Y'all Sansa stans pulling the most elaborate nonsense out of your asses to justify shitty writing. Or you twist everything and make D&D sound as if they're the most brilliant minds the world has ever seen LOL
fedonciadale answered:
Hi there!
If you would have taken one moment to look up Leni Riefenstahl - and I assure you that it is not difficult to look her up - you would not have combined your question with a comment about the writing…. Look her up and learn a lesson about how tyrants manipulate.
The visuals of the show are alluding to famous/ notorious shots of Leni Riefenstahl. You would agree that the visuals are something that gives us hints? In addition to the dialogue?
Sansa stans have complained about the writing since season 5…. You all - I’m just assuming you are a Dany fan, correct me if I’m wrong - had no complaints about shitty writing in season 7?
Look I am not saying that the way D&D got to DarkDany this season was well executed, but the foreshadowing and the character development are there. And actually from all the things the show did Daenerys is one of the better from book to screen. The hiding of her path to ruthlessness by filming from her POV is well done in season 1 to 6, and the triumphant visuals are part of that.
Visuals are part of the foreshadowing. It did not come out of nowhere and it was always a major plot point - as has been argued by book readers for ages. That Dany blew up King’s Landing was always to be the culmination of her arc. And it was always meant to hit you in the gut. So, as you do nicely put it : get your head out of your ass as and realise that you have been duped. And ponder about why? Was it because Dany is beautiful? Was it because she had the occasional bouts of benevolence? Was it because you thought she was entitled to an ugly chair because she suffered? Was it because she was set up against people coded as villains, so that you don’t care about how she defeated them? Was it because she is a woman and woman can’t be evil?
Take your pick and learn something about yourself and your own bias, how we can be duped by a tyrant! If you do that you are doing exactly what GRRM intended his readers to do by writing Dany like he did.

Reblogging for @une-nuit-pour-se-souvenir ’s excellent additions. I could not have done that because that film is actually forbidden in Germany.

Ohhhohohoho the last one - I am😏 at people who half a year ago threw stones at me when I argued that Dany has always had parallels with Hitler.

Found this shared on Quora, had to re-blog!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi @felixthemudnescat long time no see !
I had not seen the original posting of this. My first instinctual reaction to this iconographic/aesthetics research is to object to the simple equation of Daenerys with Hitler. No fiction character will ever match the scope of evil (for lack of a better word) this man and his ideology represented. By ricochet and association, it makes every fan who was moved by Daenerys a potential Nazi sympathizer and that makes no sense. It’s also unnecessarily hurtful and insulting both to these fans and the real World (those who suffered and still suffer from The Holocaust). This said, the iconographic evidence you provided through your reblog has weight and is exactly what I referred to in some of my posts as the visual clues given in the show as to Dany’s *possible* arc, its *possible* finality (more on the *possible* further down); clues which scream at you if you have the cultural baggage to recognize them, and when you binge-watch the series 3 times in one month instead of watching it an ep at the time over 8-9 years. The middle seasons are especially ripe with these visual signs because they’re tagged unto somewhat repetitious narrative (Dany freeing/conquering one city at a time with little intimate character dev scenes). And @fedonciadale is right in wanting fans to look more closely into themselves; we shouldn’t close ours eyes on the shady ideological and moral symbols casting shadows on Daenerys throughout the seasons. But they were shadows. I don’t think they were meant to be the beginning and end to all things explaining the character.
@felixthemudnescat or @fedonciadale don’t you think D&D were building something much more subtle than the end result they opted for and which gives weight to your comparative iconographic essay ? For many seasons, the fascist references or foreboding reminders of Targaryen madness never outweighed the characterizations of Daenerys as a young woman who, regardless (or because ?) of her thwarted and abusive upbringing was trying to conjugate her own suffering and road to affirmation with the conquerer’s path given her. She might not have questioned the necessity/validity for her to conquer her way back to Westeros, as the only way she could get home, but she didn’t do it through simple rampage either. She did care to free the people she needed to build her armies. She did have a heart. This she did spontaneously; it came from a deep source within her, not a calculated one. Even if, of course, it turned out to be an astute strategy. And that sets her apart from the Nazis and its leader. At their best, D&D conjugated the two: giving us a rounded character build-up and evolution with ominous symbolic shadows lurking about her. @scratchybeardsweetmouth also made me realize, I who have not read the novels, that this humane aspect of Daenerys is brought even more to the foreground in the books. I quote @scratchybeardsweetmouth: “In the books (...) she repeatedly communicates firsthand with her freed people. She hears their opinions, is not afraid to mingle with them, always finds a way to protect them, even went out of her way to help heal some when a disease was about...” Without getting as much detailed info on her compassionate stance and actions in the show, it’s certainly the impression she indeed left us with, and it’s what her most faithful and steadfast companion, ser Jorah, sees in her and repeatedly says out loud, lest we forget it ;-) (“You have a gentle heart,” etc.)
So I thought it was IMMENSELY daring of D&D (or the novelist I’ve not read yet) to give us that scene where Daenerys is called Mhysa/Mother by the slaves she freed because the scene was inhabited with so many conflictual signs: I was all at once moved and sooooo worried as to where this could lead. Moved because, bottom line, these slaves are freed, actually freed, it’s the start of something. Dany has always given those she freed a choice to leave if they so wished… Moved because it’s a woman effecting the freeing, not a man… Moved because it’s Dany, the girl who suffered, who was a slave of sorts, that does the freeing, not her mentors…. Moved to see a culture refer to their freer as “Mother” (what a great homage to mothers, to women in general) / buuuuut also worried to see a culture refer to their freer as “Mother” because it seems to infantilize them on screen.
Here we could also open up a whole debate about the malaise one can feel in seeing an Aristocratic White Woman free Third World People but I urge you to go read @khaleesirin‘s meta writings on the subject. She makes a great case for us NOT to see Daenerys in this fashion. Regardless of her looks and lineage, the novels (and GoT, I insist in my chats with @khaleesirin ;-) shows her to be like the people she frees: an Other. She like then is homeless, uprooted, migrant, disenfranchised. If we fail to see it in Essos, the show really drives this home once Daenerys sets foot in Westeros where NO ONE welcomes, understands or appreciates her. (Which suddenly complexifies our rapport to Sansa and the Northerners we grew to love and respect since they seem not to be above xenophobia, and racism.)
But to get back to the Mhysa scene. Once the worrying starts, I can’t seem to stop it, even as I am moved to tears. Literally. Because of the above-mentioned qualities of it, and also possibly because of the Christ-like iconography it uses to celebrate Dany (”Let the little children come unto me” - if I may paraphrase the New Testament -- and thanks to @ser-jorah-the-andal for the reminder). And I’m always partial to feminizations of Christ; I love it, I think it’s sublimely subversive :-) But I’m also kicking myself for liking this because I fundamentally don’t want a Messiah saving the Third World, I want the Third World to save itself... and I’m worried. I’m really worried as I watch Daenerys triumph in this scene because we know she’s lacking important elements in her “psycho-affective and socio-political tool kit” (regardless of the quality and loving care of advisers now on hand, *cough* Jorah -- in the books @scratchybeardsweetmouth tells me she needs no advisor to keep her moral compass straight) and, so, will this get to her head ? Will she get drunk on her Messiah complex (and of course she does at the end of season 8) ? And what will happen if those she freed disappoint her (again flashforward to the end of season 8) ? And how will she rule them exactly (ditto) ? And, finally, yes, worried because, the fascist iconography is there and I’m going: omg where are they going with this ?
Here I want to open another parenthesis, also brought on by something @ser-jorah-the-andal wrote me: “if this is what they meant in the first place, they sure as hell didn’t bother to tell anyone in the cast so they could act accordingly, tho a case could be made that Dany never saw herself as the villain so that’s why they didn’t tell Emilia.” Indeed I’m sure the cast, or at the very least Emilia Clarke, were never told about the endgame, or never cued to the quoting of fascist iconography in some of Daenerys’ triumphant scenes. Clarke’s shocked reaction upon reading the last screenplays is a testament to her profound surprise... and this raises ethical questions, doesn’t it ? I mean in the ethics of creative partnership. It’s a recent debate possibly because there are so many tales of directors manipulating actors into giving them the performance needed to embody and communicate the discourse they want to leave us with. But the professional in me cringes here a bit. You’d hope they would trust actors enough to let them into what it is exactly they’re supposed to be creating...
This said, up to the moment before “the bells” scene in season 8, I had nonetheless seen D+D and EC give us a woman struggling morally with her choices. That’s important to state. And to get back to the above demonstration of fascist parallels, well, please, let’s point out that the Nazis and their leader never did struggle morally with what they were doing (or if they did, History bears no markers -- I’m talking about the Nazis here, not the German people as a whole). And I was prepared to see Daenerys fail because she never healed, she never achieved psycho-affective soundness (shall we get into the chapter of her misconstruing what love is ? Her relationship arc with Jorah speaks volumes) but I was expecting her to feel remorse if she did succumb to true fascism; remorse to the point of self-execution if you will, because that’s the kind of moral person D+D had been building for 7 years.  But after D&D sent her over the edge, they erased all the previous nuances they had built into her, and I believe, tried to explained it away with a broken heart, megalomania and madness….
So if their plan was truly to make us see her as a fascist leader of the scope we’re talking about here, the way the above visual essay seems to suggest, they would have fleshed out her character’s arc accordingly throughout the seasons, and they didn’t. There were clues as to the possibilities -- yes, Dany stepping out for her final speech is absolutely shot like Triumph of the Will by Riefenstahl… but it’s also infused with other iconographic references. That image of her merging with Drogon’s wings belongs to the fantastic, and makes her into a formidable and powerful Id, which can be construed as a positive subversive marker. And some of us do celebrate WrathfulDany for this reason....
The reality of GoT is that there were no actual scenes developing her fascist ideology. So let’s not confuse allusions to fascism with actual fascism. With all D+D’s failings towards the end, Daenerys remained a more nuanced and contradictory character than that. She is NOT Hitler, please......
The iconographic research you provided in your reblog @felixthemudnescat show us one important aspect of Dany’s subtextual arc but not the full picture. It’s missing the heart and the suffering behind the soul who fell from grace.
I hope you don’t construe this long winding reaction as a slam. I know you come from a very specific place in regards to Daenerys. I just thought the excellent research you provided deserved to be reblogged, but with an added perspective ;-)

A friend of mine who lives one exit away in the same city (that’s just a few minutes by car) has all of the symptoms of covid-19. She’s been to her doctor and been sent home. She even heard them calling for a complete scrub down of the room she was just in. They told her to self-quarantine for fourteen days an notify anyone she’s been in contact with. They will not test her because tests are only for medical personal.
She’s a young mom with three kids, two in the school system and one who is a toddler. Her husband works out of the house. She works remotely and thinks she must have gotten this grocery shopping. Who does she notify, everyone who’s been to the grocery store in the past two weeks?
Just in case you think people can get tested in the United States, they can’t. As of the moment I’m writing this, we have 9,464 confirmed cases and 155 deaths associated with this. That doesn’t tell you about the people who are asymptomatic, have mild cases, or just get refused testing like this case. Every person who dies from this is the tip of the iceberg, and underneath them are another 200 infected people stretching back to their infection back and spreading out, and they’ll each infect others until we put in a hard quarantine and nationwide testing.
As a country, we have enough tests for an entire professional basketball team but not for a mother of three with a high fever, chills, and a dry cough. It’s the very definition of privilege, of the haves and the have nots, of the live and the live nots. Our government failed by not preparing for this months in advance. Instead, they were saying it would go away and encouraging people to go out and spend time in restaurants and travel. What we’re seeing right now, the number of cases and loss of human life is awful, but it’s just the ramping up. Our hospital system is going to get overwhelmed, and decisions will get made as to who gets a respirator. Once again, you know it will come down to the haves and the have nots.
The US government is trying to distance themselves from their failure to prepare through xenophobia and racism. They call this a foreign virus or a Chinese virus. Remember this is a global pandemic, and we can come together and work toward a cure or point fingers. Our government has a responsibility to protect it’s citizens not their reelection bids and not the stock market. Watch their real priorities, stay home, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, and vote.
