2020 In Review: Wordcount Tag

I’m not sure who’s already done or been tagged for this cause I am, once again, late to the party LOL but I shall (no pressure and sorry if you’ve already done it!) tag: @rainofaugustsith​ , @darth-bagel​ , @thatmmolesbian​ , @thelastenvoyyy​ and anybody else who wants to do this. Yes, I promise I mean you!

Published: 0 (I’m not counting the couple of Six Sentence tags I’ve gotten, they’re snippets of an unfinished piece & are included below instead :), or roleplay replies, cause that feels like cheating lol.) I actually wrote a lot more than I thought I had, this is a rough guesstimate as well, as my oneshot WIPs tend to be all over the place across something like 6 different documents, some of which have existed since 2018, so I had to guess at how far up to count from the end for some of them, but I think it’s a fair guesstimate XD I also have included lore/worldbuilding docs in this because that was a 3-month long Lockdown 1.0 Boredom/”Canon is a trash fire so I’m ignoring that and making up my own lore” passion project and I’m goddamn proud of how much I wrote for that. It’s the most I’ve written in one stretch (think I finished it over a span of 3 nights or so, once I’d done all the research and made all the notes ofc ^^)

lore/worldbuilding (for subterfugeverse naturally) - 23,001 (is this ALL tomato alien lore? pretty much, yes, yes it is :’D ~400 words is “the WIP reworked timeline to correlate my worldbuilding with the canon timeline that was released”, but 98% is just...me thinking way too much about Purebloods and how they deserved way better goddamn lore. I blame @fluffynexu ‘s amazing tomato worldbuilding posts,  reading them when I went looking for “canon” lore one day for the rp is what got me started down that rabbithole (it’s awesome and if you haven’t already you should totally go check hers out too :DD), I had a “fuck you then canon I’ll do it myself too >:L” moment and once I started I couldn’t stop until I’d crapped out literally over 20k words on the subject *whispering* thank you LOL)

zephyrverse au bonus oneshots - 4,537 (stuff I wrote to fill in time gaps or “just cause I had a plot bunny”, relating to mine and k-christine’s zephyrverse au rp. None of these will likely be posted publicly, but they still deserve to be counted as words I wrote this year :’D

As you can see, most of my “muse” this year came from sporadic oneshots :’D The Ahaszaai twins also properly plot-bunnied their way into my brain in late 2019 and haven’t stopped making a nuisance of themselves the whole fucking year. Every time I tried to carry on with a chapter, one of the two of them would pop up like “Nooo write about ME! pay attention to ME!” - Yes, Ni’kasi, I will get to you this year, I promise XD

New Things I Tried:

Just Writing. Not worrying about whether “it wasn’t part of the next chapter” or “it comes from a part in the story that I’m nowhere near close to posting yet”. If I felt like writing something, or for a specific pairing/feeling/scene, whatever. I wrote until I ran outta muse juice. Yeah, it meant I didn’t technically “finish” anything this year BUT - the important thing is I wrote stuff. and that’s all that really matters, eh? :’D

Polyam ships! May not seem like a big deal but I spent a long time talking myself out of them because of internalised toxic monogamy and finally saying “you know what, fuck it! I can ship three or more people together and it can still be a perfectly wholesome, healthy and loving relationship and that’s okay” was a BIG thing for me this year.

Dialogue Scripts: which I didn’t count as wordcount because really it’s just word vomit of general tone/inflection and dialogue that I came up with right before falling asleep which I didn’t want to lose. Basically, if an exchange or a particularly punchy or moving line of dialogue popped into my brain but I wasn’t ready to write the whole scene that it fit into out, but didn’t want to forget the line(s). I wrote it out in movie script/script-style roleplay fashion e.g. Character’s Name: (emotion, hand gestures etc.) [Dialogue here] and so on. I know this is probably a well known trick of the trade, but I never took it seriously until this year. Seriously, do it. It’s great.

Favorite Thing I Wrote:

Hmmm, a snippet for Andronikos/Ni’kasi that I started this week which isn’t posted yet (saving it for this week’s Six Sentence Sunday so look out for it! :D) was pretty fun to work on, I love their dynamic and Kas is suprisingly fun to write for.

Also the Aria/Vano proposal scene that I posted a snippet for the week before last. I’m having great fun with that scene, and I really enjoy putting a non-serious spin on the classic “proposal scene” tropes. Can’t wait to finish it, though it may be a while before the full one goes up on AO3, as it depends whether it ends up fitting in as part of the mainfic or as an additional oneshot

And I have a D’leah/Kissai oneshot that I need to give another once-over before I finally yeet it onto AO3 and Tumblr for you guys to see :’D

Favorite Fic I Read:

@sleepswithvillains Eleanora/Quinn fic, Helplessly Hoping. I’m horribly behind on chapters and I gotta catch up and read the finale this week, but it’s been a helluva great ride and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the story! <3

Also The Invitation collab with @tishinada featuring Zas and Fiona had me squealing, I can’t wait to catch up on HH and see more of these two, they’re adorable ;-; @a-muirehen​ ‘s Relu/Merkara series of course! I’m a complete sucker for (friends to lovers to in Ariano’s case but yea pfpfpf) enemies to lovers ships and these two are just so good, I am on the edge of my seat every time we get a new snippet for them, ngl (grimace emoji) @darth-bagel ‘s Sylvas/Graz’zt and Sylvas/Liz/Rilfaen snippets which they’ve been spoiling me with on Discord @mercurypilgrim ‘s Ven’fir/Quinn AU oneshots, Cloudbank (Western was a particular favourite, but all are very good!) and of course @rainofaugustsith ‘s Lana/Viri updates are always fantastic, some personal favourites from this year were Almost There & Memory of Healing :3 (I totally still go back to read Commander & Advisor too sometimes, getting to see Viri be a little diabolical and messing with “MiNiSTeR LoRMaN!” was and still is my favourite thing XD)

If I’ve left you out I’m sorry!! These were the ones that stuck out in my memory, but I’ve loved everyone’s writing this year, it’s been great :3

Writing Goals:

to actually finish and post chapter 8 & 9 of Creeping Shadows. Then we’ll get to the meat and potatoes of the story and maybe Aria will stop being a brat and fighting me every time I try to stick to a semi-regular update schedule Get off my butt, finalise the name and get started on Ni’kasi’s part of the Subterfugeverse story. Maybe run the updates in-tandem with Creeping Shadows but idk if I want to wait till after CS is done before I start posting Kas’s side, or do them side-by-side yet, we’ll see ;) Keep writing! I know better than to pressure myself by setting a specific word count goal, that’s never worked well in the past

At least 2 chapters of each of the works mentioned above would be great though, more would be better! We’ll see how I go

honestly, to everybody in the fandom I’ve met this year. Anybody that I follow, thank you for being there and engaging with me and/or posting amazing content for me to look at! I came over from deviantART where the SWTOR fandom is incredibly small and generally quite inactive and the contrast since moving over here has been incredibly uplifting. I very nearly cancelled Creeping Shadows and stopped posting fic for my SWTORverse altogether because I got next to no engagement on dA and it was very disheartening to the point where I felt I could enjoy the game and the rp partners I had, but the solo projects I’d put so much thought, time and love into already weren’t worth continuing. You guys took that spark and kept it going and I really don’t have enough words to say how grateful I am for that. Even if I haven’t published much this year, making posts on this tumblr, interacting with everyone and working on lore, plot points and so on for Subterfugeverse has kept me going through the Hellish Year of Nightmares that was 2020 <3

I’m more than happy to write M/M (and F/F stuff) in addition to M/F! usually when a request doesn’t specify a gender I try to stick with being gender neutral, tho sometimes I might go for female reader or S/O simply because I’m female and am used to loving on characters and writing from that perspective XD

but yes, I’m definitely down for writing same gender stuff!! so! I hope I did okay with these!

most of these characters I tend to view as bi or pan so I can’t imagine there would be too many differences based on what the gender of their S/O would be, but I did my best! let me know if there’s anything specific you’d like to see! <3

Like with pretty much any relationship he has, Dabi really prefers to spend a lot of time at your place. No offense to any of the other League members, but not spending every minute around them is his coping method for not strangling the shit out of them all. So he’ll often spend the night with you if you’re down with that. Watching TV while cuddling and eventually falling asleep on the couch only to wake up an hour later, lazily change into pajamas, and actually go into the bedroom with you? That’s pretty much his ideal night.

Please tell him you’re a better driver than Spinner. The man’s stomach couldn’t take it if you aren’t.

Honestly, in any relationship, he’s never sure whether he should do the cooking or leave it to you. If you have a preference, obviously he’ll respect that. You wanna do the cooking, that’s fine by him given that he’s both depressed and lazy. You’re not good at cooking or don’t enjoy it, well, he’ll do his best simply because he’s not sure he could handle fast food or frozen dinners every single day. Though he’ll act like it’s not a big deal, you can see the little sparkle of joy in his eyes whenever you compliment his cooking.

He’s still protective of you, right up to taking his sweet-ass time introducing you to the rest of the LoV. They’re his family, of course, but they’re also an intimidating bunch of total nutbars. He doesn’t want any of them, nor his status as a villain, to scare you off. He can already picture Himiko begging for your blood, or Magne giving you a talk about what might happen if you break Dabi’s heart, or Tomura cracking stupid jokes about ‘eating from the other side of the buffet again, Dabi?’, or Jin… being Jin. God, just thinking about all of that makes Dabi need a cigarette. He’ll introduce you eventually — of course, he’ll preface it by looking straight into your eyes and deadpanning, “You know, as soon as I open this door, it’ll be too late to run.” It goes about as well as you’d expect, and they all end up being fond of you, though.

Is forever sharing clothes with you, if the two of you are about the same size and share similar fashion choices. If you’re bigger than he is, he’ll just steal your clothes and mysteriously find some in his usual style that are your size for if/when you feel the need to take his. He certainly doesn’t mind baggy clothes, especially when they’re yours. If you’re smaller than he is, he enjoys seeing you wear his clothes even more. Don’t put on his leather jacket when he can’t see you in it, because he’ll sulk that he missed it.

Whatever cologne or deodorant you use, he’s going to end up associating that scent with you. Dabi’s sight isn’t the best, and his skin is hypersensitive, so his sense of smell is probably the best way he’s going to rely on enjoying your presence. The smell of you, your cologne or deodorant or body spray, makes him feel safe and loved. A deep breath in of it and he’s immediately calmer, feeling like you’re near and he can relax. It’s… not a luxury he’s had often in his life. To have it now, to have something so simple as a scent comfort him just because it reminds him of you is overwhelming, but in a good way once he adjusts to that feeling. He probably splurges on a bottle/can of it just so he can have the smell whenever you’re not around and he misses you.

Call him something super intimate, like “lover” or “honey”, and watch how fast he turns his face away or into your chest or shoulder to avoid you seeing him blush. He likes it more than he’s willing to admit.

Taking a brief break from watching FFXIV to throw out some HCs for my new WoL!

All three of them.

Because I have no self control.

(forgive whatever massive leaps in lore or logic I make in this I only just started watching Realm Reborn and I will fully go AU if I have to to keep my sib trio. I also apologize for the accidental poaching of any canon character names or created character names, I picked these out of a name gen because they sounded pretty and I don’t know enough of FFXIV to identify canon characters at this point).

Anyway meet the Troublesome Trio, they are siblings. Imply otherwise and you will be hurt. No, it doesn’t matter to them that they are each a different species, they ARE SIBLINGS. XD Anyway they got their start when an Au Ra dad who’d just lost two kiddos stumbled across first a Viera bby and then a Miqo’te bby and took them home to raise with his remaining Au Ra daughter. They’re all probably around the same age, but since they have no way of knowing who the REAL oldest is, they count it by who was adopted first. So the Au Ra bby, being the blood-relation of their dad, is the��“oldest”, the Viera is the “middle child” and the Miqo’te is the “youngest”. All three of them have Au Ra style names even though only one of them is a dragon person because they were named by their Au Ra dad.

Names and brief bios!!

-Starting with the Au Ra, she is Temulun Kahkol. She is a Xaela Au Ra. Very sweet natured. Cheerful. Passionate. Something of a secret Shipper at heart. Touch her siblings and Die In Fire :). Black hair, gold eyes that glow red. Medium dark skin. 5′2″ tall. Despite being the dragon from a tribe of warlike dragons, she has arguably the most Chill of the three siblings. Despite supposedly being the eldest and using that status as leverage against her sibs, they very much treat her like the youngest. It’s probably her personality.

-“Sometimes the only way to help yourself is to help others …. And sometimes it’s to punch someone in the face and summon Bahamut on them.” Quote from Temulun.

-Isn’t she a sweet heart? :)

-Someone made the eternal mistake of letting this girl become a Summoner. She is REALLY GOOD AT IT. Will happily use overkill at every opportunity. She is also a Dancer, to good luck trying to catch her.

-Moving on to the Viera, she is Cotota Kakhol. Blunt, practical, aggressive, almost No Chill.

-Look you try being a bunny girl raised in a tribe of dragons and see how much Chill you have left by the time you reach adulthood.

-Wavy black-blue hair, long black ears, red eyes, dark blue-ish black skin. 6′4″, which was not something expected by her adoptive Au Ra family. Few of her “cousins” quite knew what to do with the fact she could look them in the eye or even be taller than a few of them. Tends to act like the Oldest Sibling, probably because of her height advantage.

-Will murder you for a corn chip. But only if one of her siblings wants a corn chip. Otherwise she doesn’t care about you.

-Who let this woman be a White Mage. A White Mage needs more Chill than this. She is also a Monk. Which is ... arguably way more in character for her than White Mage and yet White Mage is her main so there you go.

-“Hi. I’m the White Mage, I’m here to kill you all.” Quote from Cotota, showing off her in depth understanding of what it means to be the party healer.

-Probably wants to punch Thancred in the mouth. Or kiss him. It depends.

-Finally we have the Miqo’te, Arasen Kahkol. Keeper of the Moon Miqo’te. Only boy of the group. Cheerful, snarky, impulse control what impulse control. Likes to play the happy-go-lucky fool but is actually the Cunning One of the group. He’d be way scarier if his impulse control wasn’t as broken as it is. Blue-black hair color/fur, Fuzzy Ears, long tail with a lion’s bushy tip on the end. One gold eye one green eye. 4′5″ of pure whoop ass. Touch his sisters without their permission and he won’t kill you on the spot, but he will gleefully sell tickets to your beatdown and then follow you down a dark alley to murder your soul.

-Look, LOOK. If you think this tiny cat bby didn’t survive being raised in a tribe of Fite Me hormonal dragon teenagers that all tower over him by a good 2 ft by learning to take them out at the knee caps, or that he isn’t Fully Ready to do the same to you by any means necessary then you have another think coming. Probably while eating dirt. And mourning the loss of your kneecaps.

-How this boy wields a Warrior class axe that’s bigger than him as well as he does is an eternal mystery, but he pulls it off. When Hitting Things With His Axe does not work, he will switch over the being a Black Mage and set everything on fire. His strategy has yet to fail.

-“Why wait for trouble when I can track it down, knock it out, and go through its pockets for Shiny Things?” - Quote from Arasen, displaying his sparkling sense of logic as per usual.

-Was adopted last and was the oldest when he was found by his Au Ra dad at 2 years old. Couldn’t remember his own name because he’d been living in an alley by himself for too long, so he got named Arasen.

Some combined HCs on the trio-

-ONE of these kiddos it the WoL. Everyone is sure of that. The question of the century is WHICH ONE. No one knows, the Trio isn’t telling.

-Honestly they seem to have the marvelous ability to pass the title of WoL and all the trouble that comes with it around like a glorified Hot Potato. This ability is a moot point because they always jump in feet first TOGETHER on anything troublesome so really all three of them might as well be a WoL at this point.

-Most people after getting to know them pray that Temulun is the WoL because Cotota is Terrifying and Arasen is a Problem. Temulun, they believe, is the one calm, reasonable one.

-This is a lie. She is the instigator, because unlike the other two she is ready to help out anyone for almost any reason.

-They would like you to believe that Temulun is the Braincell of the group.

-This is also a lie.

-The Braincell is Arasen. He just has no Impulse Control. The Impulse Control is actually Cotota, but she can’t be bothered half the time because denying Arasen is denying their Instigator, Temulun, and that means dealing with the Pouty Face and frankly nothing is worth the Pouty Face.

-Facing the Immortal Forces of Darkness? Better than the Pouty Face. Smackdown with the Primals themselves? As long as it will keeps the Pouty Face from making an appearance? Kissing Thancred? Sure- wait no, Temulun keep your shipping impulses under control we met him five minutes ago.

-Their Au Ra dad is Temuge btw. He is very proud of his kiddos.

The most powerful human to ever exist, and that's really saying something, and from what I've been told, you escaped from your childhood hell and actually made it here, and by the luck of the all mighty universe, found a family to call your own. Ok so, I like to think Mason would definitely have yearning sessions with Kyle because they would. So this was right before lav and mason got like, together together.

Kyle- You ever just have the need to like. Cuddle up with someone. And hold them close.

Mason, in a proper yearning mood,- Ugh, YES. Don't judge please, but you know Lavender?

Kyle- Yeah. We see each other every day, and she made me pride pins. That was really kind of her.

Mason- .... I would love to hold her tight and just. Snuggle up with her all day. Yeah, that sounds wonderful.... -///-

Mason- Heh!? Wha.... maybe!!! I don't have to tell you!!! *hiding his face*

Kyle- My dude, it's okay! I mean, she's nice and stuff, you guys are already giod friends, so it's not like there'd be any major problems I guess.

Mason- Well, yeah, but I just don't know if she likes me back! Like, as more than a friend!! I dunno. I'm going to her place tomorrow on Friday, and maybe I'll tell her then. Better to rip the band aid off now when it's fresh or whatever.

Did you know Lav's favorite way to hold Mason is by straddling him and snuggling into his chest while holding each other taught? Also he strokes her hair and face as well ((Note- on this blog straddling is never s*xual)) And they're on her bed, with a warm blankey, enjoying the moment :'') They nap/sleep together all the time. For reals. Mason has been in her room more times than he can count lol. They are so cute and fluffy and in love it makes me so soff Lav wears flavored lip balm all the time (like me, currently wearing the flavor strawberry sprinkle :p) , so she likes to kiss him and she'll be all like "What flavor is it? OwO" and he'll either actually guess or be like "Hmmm, I dunno, I need to taste it again ;)" cause he's flirty like that sometimes and they're favorite flavor is root beer. Or he decides to purposely guess something very wrong to mess with her, and guesses things that are inedible like “toothpaste” and they both giggle about it YES. HE WOULD.

Mason, one day, on the phone, "Hey lav meet me at my place I have a surprise byeee" Imagine them. Sharing a peach tho, like, they just take a big bite of it at the same time and then give each other the biggest smiles. Y E S.

 I just had a wonderful idea. Lav and Mason, on a fruit farm date, And they have so much fun. There's a bunch of kids there as well, and it's so cute seeing them help the babies reach stuff. Or taking pictures for other families. Yessss love that.

 Imagine they find this weird looking fruit and give it a name like “Fred” or something like that and take a bunch of photos/selfie of said fruit. Y E S. THEY WOULD. I'M LOVE. Mason- LOVELY OMG LOOK AT THIS STRAWBERRY

 Lav- :OOO It looks like a Fred! They name it after Scooby doo’s Fred Jones because it looks similar to him. Like it’s just vaguely Freddy like. And then it's the evening, they have like 2 baskets of various apples and peaches and stuff, and they're sitting under a big tree, Lav's head on his shoulder, and Lav's all like "Mason, I'm going to feed you a strawberry, okay?" "Okay. Ah-" and then she catches his mouth in a kiss and starts passionately kissing him. He's kissing her back as well, and after a minute or two, they depart and he holds her in his lap. The sun is going down, so they head to Mason's house, and they put away all the fruit they didn't already eat, and now they're in his room. Mason lays on his bed, Lav right after. Then they get real close and snuggle into each other. "I love you." "I love you too." And then they drift to sleep.

OK BUT I had this new idea abt the whacky strawberry thing - what if, instead of Fred Jones, the strawberry looked vaguely like Lewis. They call it “Lewis Pepperberry” and the second they show Lewis he’s just:  ಠ_ಠ. Lewis Pepperberry has a very special place in the fridge.

 Oooh! Yay! Lav put a spell on it so it'll never rot.

I’m thinkin the green leaves of the strawberry could be the 2 little tufts of hair on the back of head (hopefully you know what I’m talking abt lol -) Must never let the Pepperberry rot.

 Oh Vivi and Arthur would absolutely LOVE the Pepperberry, they would never let Lewis live it down. They would pepper it in (hehe) to their conversations from time to time and Lewis would always be caught off guard by it. Mystery would find it kinda ridiculous but support it anyways (and maybe put into some of their conversations as well sometimes)

 Also yes, masonder in a nutshell. Infinite smooches and holding. Along with being huge dorks. Omg.  You know how when moms kiss their newborn babies and they make those little noises while they kiss them 50 times on the same spot of their cheek? This makes little sense, but Lav and Mason kiss each other like that. They like, chose a spot and rapid fire kiss it like 50 times and it makes this little like, noise, IDK HOW TO EXPLAIN LMAOO. I literally can't explain it omg. But they smooch All. The. Time. And Mason is a surprisingly good kisser lol. Lav is almost there XD.

 I think you may be talking about a raspberry (not the fruit, the informal def is: a sound made with the tongue and lips in order to express derision or contempt. It’s like a pbbth sound I think how you’d describe it? I might be wrong so correct me if I am lol) KINDA. Like, it sounds like you're calling for like. A cat. This makes no sense I'm so sorry. It’s alright XD

But they do blow little raspberries on like the neck and stuff to get a laugh out of each other. Awwww.

The night of their wedding. They go to their room it's literally DRENCHED in pillows and blankets and sheets. There's a note from everyone that says "do what you want :p" They build the best pillow fort ever and be cute and cuddle and snuggle. They also try for a baby but that's another story lol

XD I love that tho pillow forts are most certainly their thing. They do it every Friday night and watch a sappy movie too with their favorite beverage. 

I LOVE YOU, YES They're watching Frozen and Lav is belting all the songs as Mason awkwardly dances, he sings along as well. Big cuddle time, Lav is probably laying in or on Mason’s lap, or against his side with her arms wrapped around him and his hand stroking her hair. Yes :'') They always sing along during musicals on Friday night’s it’s a rule that must NEVER be broken. Y E S. (Unless they’re in a theater, that’s the only exception tho) Of course uwu

 :OOO THEY SING BROADWAY TOGETHER. YES. BROADWAY MUSICALS THAT IS. THEY KNOW THE BE MORE CHILL AND MEAN GIRLS MUSICAL BY HEART. Those also happen to be the only musicals I know all the songs of haha. Mason definitely brushes her hair. Lavender has very voluminous hair and it's long and pretty and so much fun to play and style it. He'll blow dry it and brush it for her 100% And then he'll hold her and sleep with her :') I’m listening to a song in Singin in The Rain and I heard the PERFECT masonder quote that I think fits them really well: *it’s raining pretty hard outside* Lav - “Be careful, it’s raining a little harder than usual tonight.”

Mason - “Really? From where I stand the sun is shining all over the place ~”

And then Mason gives a sweet peck to her lips (it’s not the EXACT quote from the movie bc I altered it so it isn’t as specific and could be applied anywhere, but it still followed what was said)

Part 3 has arrived, though it was terribly late! I’m fairly certain that this will be the last part, unless people request otherwise. Thanks for showing this little fic a lot of love! It feels really nice whenever I log into Tumblr and there’s a new like or something. ^^ Remember! If there’s anything you want to see from me, I always have inspiration for writing and I’m always willing to take requests.

“So, how many dates is this?” Taemin asked, sipping his espresso with a content smile, almost a little smug.

Je Kyo rolled her eyes. “Zero. A full zero dates.” 

“You’re so mean!” he whined, setting down his glass. “We’ve been hanging out like this for months!”

She shrugged. “Yup. We’ve been getting up at unholy hours to hang out just because you’re afraid of the dark.”

“I’m not afraid of the dark! I told you: it’s a condition. Like, a serious one. You wouldn’t want to see me like that.”

She gave him a look. “Sure thing, dude. Whatever you say.” 

He huffed, “You’re so difficult. But back to my original point! These are clearly dates!”

She shoved him playfully across the table. “In your dreams, pretty boy!” She settled back into her chair, a comfortable booth seat in a cozy cafe. She looked out of the window, admiring how the city looked with the sun barely up. “It’s pretty, yeah?” 

He nodded. “Yeah, I am pretty nice.” She shot him a glare, making him laugh. “I’m kidding! Of course, I’m kidding!” He took a deep breath, composing himself. “Yes, it’s a very pretty view.” 

She smirked. Now was her chance! After all the teasing from the strange man that had walked into her flower shop a few months ago, she could finally get back at him. “Not as pretty as you,” she said, flashing him a winning smile. She topped it off with a wink. 

He froze for a moment. There were no witty comments, no rolling of the eyes, no awkward chuckles. Just him, sitting across from her, his cheeks dusted pink and his eyes wide.

Je Kyo snorted, narrowly avoiding hitting her latte when she collapsed in laughter. “Your face!” she laughed. She didn’t even care about people staring at her at this point. She was having too much fun. “That was priceless!” She pulled out her phone, snapping a quick picture. 

He pouted for a full minute before he finally spoke again. A smile made its way onto his full lips. “I win,” he said.

“What?” she asked, sliding her phone back into her coat pocket. 

He looked proud of himself. “I win!” he repeated. “This proves your undying love for me! You even took a picture of me, which, let’s be honest, you’re gonna be using as your lock-screen for a long time.” 

She dipped her fingers in a glass of ice water, flicking the leftover droplets at him. “You ever heard of ‘teasing’ or ‘joking’, you dork? That’s what that was—not a love confession! I swear, you’re so socially ignorant sometimes.” 

A few drops fell from his chin. “Sure,” he chuckled. He grabbed a napkin, wiping his face. “Believe me, you’ll fall for me one day—Je Kyo? Are you okay?”

She quickly shook her head, trying to draw herself out of her own all-consuming thoughts. “Yeah, I’m good,” she said quickly. “Just staring at something.” 

That, in itself, wasn’t a lie. She just hadn’t told him what it had been. 

She must’ve been seeing things, right? Things like that didn’t happen to normal people. A certain ethereal glow to the eyes, a glitter like sparkles or moon-dust. 

Though... 

She’d thought for months now that Lee Taemin was far less than normal.

The memory played in her head over and over again, like a song on repeat. So that’s when she’d fallen for him, huh? 

It wasn’t often that there were times like this in her life. Quiet moments that she could enjoy all to herself and roll her eyes at the cliche feeling of the whole thing. She always felt a sense of irony when she had a moment of peace, considering how rare it was. 

Though, her peace was different from most people’s. What’s new? 

When people think of calm, they think of sunsets and ocean waves, mountain tops and whispered ‘I love you’s, raindrops on windowpanes. 

For her, ‘calm’ was a glass of tea, bought on sale at the convenience store. It was late nights, warm days with cold breezes, and her son fast asleep in their home, unaware of how cruel the world could be.

She wanted to keep him safe from that as long as possible, or at least give him hope that things got better. But how could she do that when she barely believed it herself? 

Je Kyo stirred a spoonful of honey into her mug. The twilight looked rather lovely shining in through the slightly cracked window at the back of her apartment. 

Despite how pretty the scene was, Je Kyo had come to dread twilight for one reason and one reason only. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her beating heart and racing thoughts. She just wished her anxious feelings would go away.

But somehow, even though there were butterflies of unfounded nervousness in her stomach, she’d never felt calmer. In a way, she felt accepting of the strange feeling. 

She glanced back at Dongin, sleeping soundly on the rock-hard, dreadfully uncomfortable couch they called their own. A small smile graced her chapped lips. 

“You goof,” she mumbled even though he couldn’t hear her, lost too deep in the land of dreams. She walked over to him, wiping the corner of his mouth with her sleeve. “Drooling all over the place... Nasty,” she chuckled. 

There was a knock on the door, gentle and held with an easy rhythm. She opened the door without checking through the peep-hole; she really didn’t need to. “Tea’s in the kitchen,” she said. 

“Not even a ‘hello’?” Ah-In chuckled. 

Je Kyo shut the door behind her, careful to be quiet with it. “Sorry,” she said. “I just really want to get this off my chest. Preferably as fast as possible.” 

Her neighbor nodded, ever-understanding. “All right, then.” They both ended up settling down on the fire escape, not wanted to wake up Dongin. “So, what’s up?” 

Je Kyo took another glance at the sky, her headache worsening. She let out a heavy sigh. There was no backing out of it now, was there? “Have you noticed me acting a little strange these past few months?” 

Ah-In nodded slowly. “If I’m being honest... Yes. You haven’t really been yourself, though I can tell you’ve been trying to mask it.” 

She let out a bitter chuckle. “Guess it didn’t work all that well then,” she joked. She shrugged, taking a quick sip of her drink. “Well, what can I say? I tried.” 

“Did you bring me here just to tell me that?” 

Any trace of a smile left her face, but even then, she didn’t look sad. She didn’t look distressed, she didn’t look angry—she just looked numb. She didn’t meet her eyes, staring off into the distance, her eyes scanning over the cityscape. “Innie,” she started quietly, “I think I’m going insane.” 

A breeze rushed by them, blowing their hair and buffeting their thin cardigans. Ah-In’s hoop-earrings acted as a sort of wind-chime. Je Kyo almost chuckled at the added atmosphere. What a movie-like scene, she thought.

Ah-In stared at her. “What?” It was more of a gasp than a question. Not even a gasp, just a breath, lost in the wind like a wisp of lost time or memory.  

Je Kyo took another sip. “Insane,” she hummed. “You know? Crazy, mad, deranged, demented, unhinged, lunatic—you get it. I’m just not in it anymore.” 

“In what?” 

She thought for a moment. “Life, I guess,” she finally settled on. “For the past few months, I’ve been hearing voices and even though they freaked me out at first, now I’ve gotten used to them.” She chucked, tugging mindlessly at a strand of hair. “That’s not really normal, huh?” 

She dripped a finger in her tea, stirring the liquid slowly. The subtle warmth felt nice against her skin. “The voices have gotten more and more... Enticing, you know? Like they’re calling me towards them, and honestly, I barely have the strength to tell them ‘no’ anymore.” 

She looked over to her friend, a sad smile on her face. “You know, if it wasn’t for you and Dongin, I would just kill myself.” She could feel herself tearing up a little bit. She scoffed at herself, smacking her cheek a little. “Well, isn’t that rich? Throwing myself a little pity party over here.” 

The whole time, Ah-In had been gazing at her with thick emotion swimming in her eyes. Je Kyo expected pity or concern, but instead, she looked proud. After the initial shock, at least. “You’re not throwing yourself a pity party,” she said. “You’re finally spilling your feelings, and that’s a blessing.” 

“It’s a blessing for me to be totally screwed?” 

Ah-In shrugged, a smile creeping up her cheeks. “Maybe you’re screwed, maybe you’re not—but either way, you’re not dead yet, are you?” Je Kyo stared at her. “You’re obviously holding onto something, or you would’ve jumped off this building a long time ago. I saw you almost do it when you were younger.”

Je Kyo flinched at the memory. “Not exactly something I look back on fondly...” 

“But do you remember how you snapped out of it?” 

She brought the mug to her lips. “I kinda blocked it out of my life completely, so no. Please, enlighten me, though.” She started chugging the rest of the drink.

“You found out you were pregnant.” 

She paused, pulling away slowly. “That was the day I got the results back, wasn’t it?” 

Ah-In nodded. “Exactly.” She wrapped an arm around Je Kyo’s shoulders, rubbing her arm soothingly. “Which confirms my theory. I already knew this, but you care about other people so much more than yourself.” 

She scoffed. “Who do you think you’re talking about? Since when have I—?”

“Forever,” Ah-In said firmly. “I’ve never seen you be selfish.”

She shifted a little. “Oh, shush... Flatterer.” 

“But despite that, I think it’s time you be a little selfish.” Je Kyo furrowed her brows at her, a question in her eyes. “I think the voices will go away if you do what’s best for you, for once. Not for Dongin, not for me, not for the future. Just for you, in this moment. 

This beautiful present that you never get to spend enough time in.” She turned to look at the setting sun. “Because... Despite how shitty people can be, ‘right now’ is actually pretty beautiful.” 

Je Kyo snorted. 

“Why are you laughing?” Ah-In whined. 

She covered her mouth, trying not to draw any attention from the people walking down below. “Y-you swore!” she said through muffled giggles. 

She crossed her arms. “You think I don’t swear?”

“Not what I said.” There was a pause. “But totally what I was thinking.” 

Ah-In gave her a light shove. “Je! I’m trying to help!”

She grabbed her friend’s hand. “I know.” She gave it a quick peck. “And I thank you.” She stood up, crawling back into the apartment through the window. “Can you watch Gin for a little while?” 

“What?” Ah-In leaned her head in, watching Je Kyo toss on her shoes and a jacket. “Why? Where are you going?” 

She opened the door, giving her friend and son one more look before stepping out. “To be selfish.”

Je Kyo sat at the bus-stop, kicking her feet back and forth childishly. The city was dark and quiet, it felt like she was the only one there. It was eerie, in a way. 

The moon was full and bright in the sky, giving minimal light to the dark streets. It was moments like these that made Je Kyo wish that the neighborhood council weren’t so lazy with their plans for streetlights. Yet... She wasn’t afraid.

She was prepared for anything that was to come. 

“Why’d you ask to meet here?” A familiar voice came. It was gentle and smooth and completely unmistakable. It was one she had, unintentionally, become quite attached to. “I told you that nighttime was a bit of a no-no for me.” 

She turned around. There was Lee Taemin, standing there with his hood up, hands in his pockets and full-length pants on. That basically confirmed her theory. “I asked you to meet with me because I figured it out.” 

He quirked an eyebrow. “Figured what out?” 

“You.” She stood up, walking closer to him. “I figured you out.” 

He backed up a few steps. “What’re you—?”

She tugged his hood off and pushed him into a patch of moonlight. Her breath almost got taken away. “I knew it,” she whispered. “You’re a moonwalker, aren’t you?” It was more of a statement than a question.  

In the moonlight, Lee Taemin barely looked human anymore. His eyes shone with a sort of glowing opalescence, he looked almost transparent and his hair dripped with light, literally dripping onto his shoulders and leaving a trail in its wake. 

He was shocked at first, but his face quickly relaxed. “So you figured it out, huh?” 

She nodded. “Yeah.” She took in a shaky breath, putting her hands in her pockets. “I noticed.” 

“You don’t seem shocked.” 

She shrugged. “I’m more shaken than I seem, I promise.” She breath came out in thick plumes in front of her. Why did tonight have to be so cold? It didn’t help make her any braver. “I just can’t believe a moonwalker’s really here. Like, that they really exist.” 

He shuffled. “Are you disappointed?” 

She thought for a moment. “A little, yeah.” He looked at her, eyes wide. “I’ve been lying to you. Not for long. Only for about a month.” 

“...About what?” he asked. 

She sighed. “I’m seriously in love with you. But now, I’m just disappointed because I’m realizing that none of it was real. You’re just trying to take me away from my son.”

He shook his head. “No! That’s not what I—!”

“You only got close to me so you could feed on my loneliness, put voices in my head and eventually steal me away... You’ve been lying to me way longer than I have to you.” She hadn’t even noticed her tears that were dripping against the cracking pavement. 

She was more emotional about this than she’d expected.

He took a step forward. “Je Kyo, I—”

She cut him off, “I’m just sad because my on-going theory about humanity is being proven correct once again.” She laughed bitterly. “People suck. Big time.” She sniffled and wiped her eyes. “Well, guess what?” She met his eyes, determination burning in her own. “I’m not going to let you take me away.” 

He sighed. He took a few more ginger steps forward. “I’m not... Going to take you away. Where did you hear that rubbish?” 

She took a step back for every step he took forward. “All the stories!” she snapped. “There’s never been a good story about you people! It’s all freakin’ gloom and doom!”

He kept advancing on her. “Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to believe everything you read?” 

She balled her fists. “My parents didn’t stick around long enough to teach me that particular lesson, no.”   

“I’m not going to take you away from Dongin. From your life.” 

There was an anxiousness growing in her stomach that only grew when her back bumped against a wall. They were inches apart. Not even inches. Mere centimeters. The strength left her. She couldn’t feel angry anymore. Just there. “...Then what’re you going to do?” 

His hand trailed slowly up her arm, giving her goosebumps and leaving his glow in a path leading upwards, the shape of his slender fingers. “Make you less lonely. That’s what it says in the stories, right? Do those damn stories ever specify how?”

She felt stiff. She wanted to run, but she couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. Maybe she didn’t even want to. “No, I supposed they don’t,” she muttered. 

“We do it by giving you lonely humans what you’re lacking.” He paused. “Love.” 

She frowned. “But it’s not real. If it’s not real, I don’t want it.” 

He shook his head. His eyes looked somewhat pleading. “No, no, no—it’s so real, I promise! For most moonwalkers, yes, it’s done for the purpose of their existence, but you and me... We’re something special.” 

She looked away from him. “How am I supposed to trust you? Believe that this isn’t just because of your flippin’ otherworldly purpose?”

He thought in silence for a moment. “Because this is how I feel right now.” He brought his hand to her cheek. 

She flinched, but immediately relaxed against his palm. She didn’t know what she was expecting, really. She had thought that the glowing essence he possessed would feel somewhat cold, like the moon looked. “It’s very... Warm,” she said quietly. 

He nodded, trying to smile a little. “Very warm. Because I’m nervous.” 

She met his piercing gaze. “Nervous?” she echoed. “Why?” 

“Because of you,” he chuckled. “I feel like a child around you... I get so fluttery and all over the place, all I can do is tease you some days. All because I don’t know how to deal with myself.” He rolled his eyes at himself. “Some divine being I am.” 

He examined her face. So close to his. So tempting. “You know...” he whispered. “I’m sure if I kissed you right now, my knees would buckle.” 

Her cheeks felt hot. She didn’t know if it was because of his hand against her cheek or something else, but all she could do was shake her head. “Don’t lie to me, please.” 

“I’m not,” he said. Would that be too selfish? 

Well... She came out here this cold autumn night to be selfish. Might as well go all the way. If it ended up breaking down eventually, that was fine. Even the brightest thing in the world, like the sun, sets at some point.

SM086 - Thoughts

Simply put, I loved this episode. It may be a typical “Rocket Gang comes and steals Satoshi and others Pokémon” plot, but it has great character moments, and I love how we got to learn more about Ride Pokémon, and just how human this episode was. Pokémon need refreshment from time to time, they need more than just Pokémon Center from time to time too! And how each Pokémon is given their own course depending on their condition is great! Without further ado, let’s talk about my favourite moments in our newest episode of Pokémon Sun & Moon, before the highly anticipated Necrozma Arc begins:

I Choose Here! The Pokémon Steam Paradise!

So the Ultra Guardians are heading to Pokémon Paradise Resort on Akala Island to have a relaxing time after being called to so many Ultra Beast missions lately. Lusamine is paying their trip there, which honestly is an extremely nice act from her! What I loved about the opening scene is how Mamane and Mao explain the place to Satoshi, to which Satoshi goes all sparkle eyes. He’s clearly excited to go there, and it shows later on as well! I honestly love it when they show that side of him, because then we’re reminded he’s still a kid inside, even with such amount of battle expertism!

Another moment I absolutely adore is how every trainer seems to feel close to their Ride Pokémon. Somehow I adore Suiren and Hakuryu’s moments throughout the episode, even if one could consider them small.  Gosh I wish I could get myself a Hakuryu figurine to accompany my Suiren nendoroid :D (with Ashimari as well).

Another moment I loved is how Yareyutan is apparently a regular customer at the Spa. This darn Pokémon keeps on coming back to Sun & Moon episodes and I have to say, he’s by far one of my favourite recurring Pokémon on the cast as of this moment.

And of course Suiren has the best lines :))) I think she’s slowly becoming the very top favourite character on my list. I just really adore her ok?

Thou honestly, after learning about Ishizuka’s passing and him apparently being the voice behind Yareyutan, it kinda feels sad to see Yareyutan in this episode now. And I bet any future episode that’s been pre-recorded with his lines are gonna have same effect. I may have been a fan of Pokeani for only about one year and maybe three months, but his voice has stuck to me through a lot of voice roles he’s had (Hohenheim from FMA:B and Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop being most memorable before Pokeani), so it has hit me quite a bit. Bit of a sidenote regarding the episode, but felt like mentioning. He’ll be greatly missed.

This conversation with Mao and Satoshi is absolutely amazing as well. I keep on getting the ‘big sis’ vibes from Mao lol. Also, this is 100% Satoshi. I mean, he knows they came there to take care of their Ride Pokémon, but when he’s excited, he tends to go with the flow. And this is one of those moments. I just loved it a lot.

When the Ride Pokémon are given examinations on their conditions and given recommended courses, Satoshi’s reaction is so cute! He truly thinks all of this is amazing! He’s so excited!

And how Satoshi is so excitedly running to the changing room is just amazing.

I absolutely adored Rocket Gang in this episode. They had such good going throughout the episode, showing their skills and all. It was absolutely hilarious how everything they did in this episode actually turned out to be helping the Ride Pokémon relax. What amazing buffoons they are!

While Satoshi and others are at the Care Area of this Spa, their partner Pokémon have gone to the Play Area to have fun. While others are playing in the pool with slides, Nyaheat, Bakugames and Amajo are taking a tan. So to speak. And I have to say, I keep on loving Amajo more and more in every single episode since her evolution debut, and I find that amazing. She basically did nothing in this episode, but her enjoying the sun and prompting the two fire Pokémon do the same somehow just makes me adore Amajo more. What is it with me...

This scene is absolutely amazing! First Satoshi gets excited about the hot spring and jumps in, then that act prompts Flygon to jump in (Mao calling Satoshi out for making Flygon copy him), and then Gablias does the same! These two have so much personality in them.

And then this scene happens!

They all really love the Spa and really want to jump in like Satoshi did lol. Don’t do this at home, like Lilie says after this!

We’re not even a third of the episode in and I’ve laughed so much. That already tells me this episode has started out strong and is a really enjoyable one. And I was supposed to keep this short. Will I ever manage with that?

Why is Musashi saying such good lines in this episode :D And her outfit, gosh I love it.

Oh really. That’s kinda obvious thou but isn’t that a bit too closed up to be able to enjoy the pool XD

Ajhasgfjhsgfjhgjf this already killed me without subtitles because I knew she said that. But can you believe it, they actually managed to capture all of the Pokémon. They could have got away perfectly. The Pokémon remain captured for the rest of the episode, and we’re still not halfway there. But oh no. They plan on capturing the Ride Pokémon as well, and how they plan on doing it is so weird. They want to help Ride Pokémon relax so they’d be all noodles. That’s... not exactly how relaxation works. :D

And I’d like to unsee this tyvm. Such a majestic creature looking so... non-majestic. It’s got to be cotton wings...

The scene with Lilie and Tyltalis playing with moisterising mud is precious and gosh they’re so lovable.

But I honestly loved Suiren and Hakuryu’s moment somewhat more. And Musashi is great as well.

Ajsgfjshgjsfgj Musashi is so blunt with her actions, but her action here actually wasn’t harmful, but incredibly helpful. Suiren’s reaction is so her, she’s such a kind person that she’d never do something if she saw the other being afraid of it. But Mu, oh no she’ll do it if it’s good for it.

Once Suiren realises Hakuryu is fine with it thou, they start applying the mud on each other as well. I just love their partnership whole lot.

Others have great moments as well, Mamane applying Aroma Oil on Metang while Sonansu and Hidoide are doing the same (it really works like a charm on Pokémon huh?), and Flygon and Gablias being rivals to each other in a swimming race, Nyarth helping Satoshi and Mao to cheer them on. Just amazing!

Also, Kojiro being able to do muscle massage on Pokémon somehow feels very him?? I can totally imagine this being real, because he did do the massaging her so expertly? He is known to taking care of his Pokémon with extra care, I mean, I don’t remember others doing watering on their grass types? So, I believe he wasn’t totally lying, even if a bit exaggerating?

Lizardon certainly enjoyed it.

Pretty sure that just helps them out to be in more fit shape you buffoons. lol Or they’re just too good at their jobs here that they didn’t realise their plan was fooled from the beginning.

Sun & Moon has given them the best glares imo. Thou I think my fav is still from SM074?

Gosh I already knew I’d love this bit from the preview #2 and I’m not disappoint.

Somehow I love how Suiren is the one suggest this. She’s been shown to be the silent, shy person, and now that she’s enjoying herself lots, she’s more than happy to suggest a place they should try next. Sort of like me. Heh. She’s actually come quite far when I think about it. I mean, in the beginning of the series when she was asked to hold a lesson about fishing, she acted so nervous. I don’t think the Suiren from SM006 would be so eager to suggest flower bath here. She’s really grown to appreciate this group of friends, or so I see it!

Asfjhgfsjhgf Musashi I adore you. First she acts so sweet and kind and then her true personality comes aboard! Absolutely stunning!

I don’t know why, but I seriously love how this scene is drawn. Satoshi is so angry. Mao is just not impressed. But like. I adore this art style so much, I know I say this a lot but gosh. I think this is my fav angry-Satoshi face yet.

Well, I guess the springs had an effect as well. Terrifying how refreshed they are indeed. :D

They’ve been in a cage for half the episode and never tried getting out???? This bothers me so much. Pikachu would never wait. He’s always try to get out. I guess the cage was too crowded.

Musashi’s vampire teeth are killing me.

I’m more focused on Suiren trying to get the net off and making noises lol. Others look mad, while Suiren focuses on the net. I don’t think she likes it one bit. :D

The Sludge Bomb attack not being effective because of the Aroma Oil asjkfgsjhgsjh Hidoide helped Metang out with Sonansu lol.

Says Nyarth while Sonansu is enjoying the same Aroma Oil on itself.

Gosh seeing them call out attacks from their Ride Pokémon really make it seem like the Ride Pokémon are truly theirs and not just Aether Foundations. Here’s hoping they get to have them around somehow after Ultra Guardians retire...

I think the last time we saw a combo attack like this was in XYZ. Looks absolutely stunning.

Okey I don’t know if it’s just me but, it really sounded like Kiteruguma was finishing Rocket Gang’s “Ya na kanjii“ with a Kii in place of jii. I just burted out laughing at it because I don’t know if it’s intented or not. If it’s intented, so god damn clever. I missed hearing Ya na kanjii so much.

The sparkling eyes. I love mama bear.

The silence here that lasts 3 seconds until Satoshi reacts is killing me lol. Kiteruguma really does keep on surprising them.

Welp, they get to go the flower path and it looks amazing. I want to go to one too. Nyaheat playing with the flowers while avoiding water is so cute.

Rocket Gang however are enjoying a different hot spring bath with Kiteruguma, who’s clearly parenting the five-man group. I mean, when Musashi tries to get out, Kiteruguma holds her back and tells her to count to 100 before leaving the bath. Like, what the hell :D

They’re burning. Oh boy.

The end of the episode. I think you guys can see I enjoyed this episode. I wanted to keep this short but alas, it had lots of fun moments I loved whole lot. I just... couldn’t keep my hands of the keyboard.

I’m actually wondering if this place was supposed to be Hana Resort. Since that is on Akala Island as well, and Mamane did explain they have hotel and such as well. Hmmmmmm.

PokéProblem segment shows a continuation to Rocket Gang actually finishing their 100 count, and they’re hot-read. Kiteruguma still enjoys the bath thou.

Next week, Necrozma Arc finally begins, and we are shown the symbol of Ultra Necrozma drawn by Bebenom, alongside showing a first clance at a Rocket Gang Unit (which has Matori wearing a Rocket Gang uniform!) that’s about to arrive to Alola, to do whatever plans they have with Necrozma. All the hints from the start of UB arc are coming together now.

All of the adults are shown to be with little energy, sleepy-headed and bedheaded (Kukui wearing a shirt and having his coat closed up is such a cursed scene, clear sign something is wrong.) We also get Gladio as the new member of Ultra Guardians, and Solgaleo and Lunala arrive with a certain black creature chasing them.

Uhm kinda if I decide to actually do one, I usually will play on my ps4, draw, or use the computer, I’ll get ready for bed. Maybe wash my face and drink some tea. Send a “goodnight” to the people I’ve recently talked to and then kinda just let my mind wander till I fall asleep.

((If I wash my face, I run warm water, then wet my face, scrub with ocean salt from lush, wash it with aquamarina, use the rosy checks face mask. I then rinse and check my pimples then dry my face and go to bed haha ;u;))

When I take a bath I usually run the bath, throw in a chunk of bath bomb or bubble bar set up some candles and chill for a bit after doing my face routine. Then I get out dry off and bed. XD

Japanese/Asian convenience stores are like the antithesis of grungy X’D they’re almost sparkling in comparison to the ones here in North America. There does tend to be more modern exhibits around, but I’ve never actively looked up the more traditional older-style exhibits though. There’s a couple here in my city, I think, but the modern ones really do outweigh in quantity to those. Omg, ikr! I don’t get those either!! I literally tilt my head-

The interactive ones are a lot cooler in comparison because you actually get to interact with it, and watch what happens because of you. People in Japan normally took pity on us when we played in Akihabara in Tokyo! Major crane game power there, and a lot of tourists, so I think the people there just kind of expect varying gameplay levels there haha. Nono, I still have ramen at home! I’m just watching my weight-

Favorite scene. HMM. I really liked the battle with king Zebugu, quite honestly. He's such a gigantic ass, BUT I can't help but love how Mizuki took what everyone else saw as a weakness and beat his sorry butt all over the place.

QUESTION 2. During the course of Book 1, it becomes more apparent that magic is a key component of combat in the larger setup of the world. Thus, Mizuki takes a keen interest in learning it. Do you think Mizuki will be able to unlock her unique ability, or is there a reason that prevents her from learning? What do you think her unique magical ability might be? Alternatively, is her unique ability to use the abilities of others? If Mizuki continues to be unable to learn magic, how do you think she’ll adapt to this fact? Speaking of magic, though, Cahe does find a unique ability of his own during an intense fight to save Pejiba. Do you think Cahe will develop the skill more? Or, is it possible Cahe will struggle without the intense emotional motivation to manifest his magic?

Do you think the two will be able to maintain a relationship, or was it something that only worked because of the dire situation? If the two do continue to have a relationship, do you think this will cause tension with Mizuki considering it makes her a third wheel? If you do think there will be tension, do you think it will arise from Mizuki being cut out of the relationship, or is it possible there will be issues of jealousy? i will say - there is somewhat of a time skip between books 1 and 2 (as evidenced from the hair), so we'll see how cahe and pejiba's relationship has progressed over the course of that gap soon enough.

Impressions and Brief Life Updates

A bit rambly but nice to get all my thoughts down.

Shanghai is a great place. That's the first impression I want to put out there, partly because of my own and everyone else's poor impressions of all the bad things coming out of China that the media has furnished us with. Sure, those things like lack of press freedoms and political accountability are real problems, but all in all they don't really capture the totality of everyday life here. I can't speak for the rest of China, but Shanghai a developed city and not a developing one. It's clean, efficient, and sparkling; its inhabitants are very proud of it. I feel like Western media rarely paints a more complete picture of China – they often focus in on a specific story, often negative, in a very narrow scope. That's needed but often times leaves one without a bigger picture.

Unlike what I expected in a big city (I think New York), most people I have met are actually surprisingly nice (multiple people have helped me when I accidentally dropped my umbrella out of my backpack side pouch, or have been very courteous with directions). They are also hardworking (my coworkers often work overtime, lots of people coming back on the subway at every hour), and not in any way brainwashed. You can talk to most people about politics, and most people have opinions, some positive, some apathetic, some resigned. But independent thought is alive and well I feel. It might just be me, but I also get a kind of warm and inviting community feeling of Shanghai- I've been helped out so many times in so many ways by strangers; I have a feeling that people don't have a "mind your own business" attitude, and do take care of those around them. So all in all, I quite like Shanghai!

One weird thing is that I walk around sometimes and I'm still surprised when I realize: "Oh hey, everyone here is Chinese" xD. I know, I'm in arguably the largest agglomeration of Chinese people in the world, but I'm still kinda used to being a minority, or at least seeing different races around. So when everyone becomes Chinese, and the fact that people are Chinese ceases to matter, everyone is just "human." Then you notice a lot of different kinds of humans in the mix. For example, in terms of the young people you have the very western fashions going around now, as well as people who dress simpler (with guys, the "short Asian haircut"). You have the people going for Korean styles although I must admit it's not as common as I was expecting, you also have the otaku types, and a lot of others. There's a lot of difference and diversity there.

I think this feeds into something that I've been experiencing very strongly recently, that China is not a homogenous, monolithic whole. There is so much difference in-between. China is a nation built on many regions, and many subcultures, and those subcultures are still really important. Most people in Shanghai still speak Shanghainese, and I can't understand them because it's a totally different language. A lot of my coworkers switch between 'regional mode' (speaking in dialect) to 'national mode' (speaking Mandarin) many times in a conversation, and definitely depending on who they're talking to (they wouldn't speak Shanghainese to a non Shanghainese speaker). If you go out a few hundred miles, the entire culture would change into something different. I really appreciate the difference, the subcultures, and I feel like they're the keys to a richer understanding of China.

As for me, I think this is a really cool time in my life, one that I'm quite thankful for. For one, I get to explore for the first time two other parts of my identity, which has been very interesting. In America we deal with issues of being Chinese- or Asian- American; here I'm learning what it means to be American-Chinese. It means having customs and assumptions that are somewhat different form what people would assume you to have; it means not being able to speak Mandarin as well as you want sometimes. The other part that I get to explore is what it means to be a Jiangsu-er (Jiangsu being the name of the province I'm from; Shanghai is part of its macroregion and used to be a part of it). This goes in line with what I said above about 'regional difference'. Our province is packed with cultural sites and cities, as well as known for its abundance of waterways. We have a lot of things to be proud of and that's fun to learn about!

Finally, I'm glad to have this chance to hang out with family. I've never really had the chance to hang out too much with my extended family, and I'm happy to get that chance now. Its made me really glad to be able to see my grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins, and step into their lives, and to maybe stay for a little longer this time. Honestly, I always thought that if I had stayed in China (I moved out when I was 4), my life would turn out probably something similar to my cousins. As it was 10 years ago, I thought that would have been quite different from my life in America partly due to lack of many technological amenities. Ten years ago, there was much fewer high-speed rail lines, much fewer subway lines in the big cities, no instant communication through WeChat (to speak nothing of bike-shares and mobile payments, which arguably make life in China quite more convenient than in the US). China now is much, much more developed, in a span of 10 years, and I don't think my life now would have been that different after all. One motivation for me to come back to China was to hang out with them, and now I feel like the distance is closer and communication easier than it has ever been.

All in all, some impressions of the first month here in Shanghai! Another month and then off to Beijing!
