This piece is called “Nonbinary,” starring a beautiful soul named @myprom ❤️💛💚💙 People are too complex to be binary. They are. We don’t fit into these neat little packages, not in terms of sexuality, not in terms of gender, and not in terms of anything really. Nonbinary-ness happens in ways we don’t even realize. Girls playing sports is one example. Sports are traditionally thought of as an activity for men, but women like to play sports too, because we don’t fit into the standardized boxes society has made up for us. Men wearing pink is another example. Men taking care of children, or being nurses. Women lifting weights. Women CEOs. These are examples of nonbinary behaviors based on the traditional definitions of gender roles in society. Don’t you see, we are all nonbinary in some way. It’s only that some people’s nonbinary-ness is more obvious than others’. Society teaches us to reduce the chaos by making up categories, tricking many into thinking that’s how things “should” be, or that things that don’t fit into those categories aren’t real. Forcing people to be things they’re not is wrong. Forcing people to have to hide who they are out of fear of physical/psychological harm is wrong, it’s terrorism, it’s hate. If you are reading this and have negative feelings about anyone in the LGBTQ+ community, I beg you to reconsider & spread love instead. Love is a many splendored thing. Love lifts us up where we belong. Not hate. Hate is not a many splendored thing. Hate does not lift us up where we belong. We all deserve to feel accepted & loved, to feel like we have a place in society. I like to celebrate the diversity of the world all year, but this is a special month because it is a time to celebrate a group of people that are continuously persecuted, hated, discriminated against, harmed, and killed out of hate, the LGBTQ+ community. Pride month is about equality, raising awareness, acceptance and freedom and LOVE. It’s about pushing things and pushing things until the world is just and right. HAPPY PRIDE MONTH my LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters. I see you. You are a beautiful part of this world. Thank you for having the courage to be yourself 🌈 ❤️ (at Ciudad de México) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByYAmeBJzM9/?igshid=blqvr0fg9212

FEA // SAD _ ((UGLY // TRISTE) _ 📷: @el.magiciann 👸🏽: @jessandthesea __ We all call ourselves names sometimes. We beat ourselves up for a pimple, cellulite, a crooked nose, thick thighs, no butt, curly hair, invisible eyelashes, no boobs, too much body hair, chicken legs. We tell ourselves we aren’t smart enough, talented enough, strong enough, experienced enough, creative enough, confident enough. Pfff it goes on an on how we feed ourselves this garbage. Unfortunately, society hasn’t done a good job in helping us lift ourselves up instead of feeling so comfortable in bashing ourselves. That’s because it profits off of our insecurities. It sucks. But here’s the truth, at least according to me. It’s ok to feel ugly sometimes, to feel sad sometimes. It’s ok to let yourself bask in some of the darker emotions. What’s important is that it doesn’t last, that it doesn’t outweigh our drive to exist in this complicatedly beautiful world. That we know those thoughts are passing just like everything is always passing. Let yourself cry in the shower, cry in the streets if you need to. But don’t continuously bash on yourself. Instead, when you have the urge, think of what your best friend would say to you, and say that to yourself instead 🖤 Seriously do it, and your life will change for the better. Mouth Full of Worry _ A mouth full of worry demanded that we find a ship to jump from and start again and again and again as necessary. _ 👸🏻: @maarmoreno _ I watched a TedTalk last week during one of my sleepless nights of continuous jetlag, and I think it changed my life. It was talking bout emotional hygiene and how we don’t pay enough attention to it, especially when compared to our physical/personal hygiene. Like, we brush our teeth every morning, but we don’t practice things that are good for our emotional hygiene as part of our daily routine? Society has taught us that that’s not necessary I guess, and so this learned behavior of not maintaining or even considering emotional hygiene is just how we live. And we suffer for it, and in fact, it does impact our physical health, our quality of life, our quantity of life as well (people with poor emotional hygiene die sooner!). That’s where today’s poem came from, and I thought it would resonate with Maryana, my canvas for these words in my digital observance of her before we met to create this episode. The thing is, one of the issues that severely impacts our emotional hygiene is our propensity to RUMINATE. Rumination, thinking about something over and over, replaying it in our heads, getting caught in a negative thought loop, worrying and worrying about it, this practice does not actually do us any good. It leads to much higher risk of depression and a slew of other diseases that you can avoid by just changing the habit. Jump of the ship of rumination, and restart your brain when you find yourself thinking too much about something negative. All it takes it a two minute distraction, and the rumination essentially disappears. Of course, you do have to remind yourself, even FORCE yourself to stop worrying and rehashing, but once you do it a few times, you begin to break the habit and it becomes easier and easier. That’s one way to keep your emotional hygiene top notch so that you’re able to be your best self and share your beautiful gifts with the world, whatever those might be <3 _ #skinonsundays #physiopoetry #emotionalhygiene #rumination #dontworry #poetryinmotion #mentalhealthmatters #sundayvibes (at Colonia Roma) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx83p04p4Po/?igshid=1lctagkxdrsog

Abortion is not a dirty word. Abortion is not a sin, is not shameful. It’s a pity that so many women feel the need to hide or justify a perfectly rational decision they make with their own body because of how society at large treats us if we do. You don’t have to hide it if you don’t want to, not from me. Feel free to DM me if you want to share your story in a safe space, or leave a comment below to share your story if you’re comfortable. It is not the government’s place to control of women’s bodies. In fact, it’s a violation of human rights. Everyone deserves a right to make their own choices about their bodies, to choose whether or not to have a child, to feel safe in their decision. Unfortunately, the government of Alabama has decided that life in prison is the punishment for both women who choose to abort and the doctors who perform abortions. That includes cases of rape and incest. Keep in mind that a rapist does not even get that much time in prison, so a woman who has an abortion because of rape will get more time in prison than the man who raped her. That’s so fucked up. OUR BODIES ARE OUR BUSINESS and no one else’s. Abortion is not murder and treating it as such is inhumane. I know many women who have had abortions. They made the best choice based on their individual circumstances. They are not murderers. Not even close. They are beautiful, intelligent, kind women. This Alabama law (another form of racism, mind you) is an outrage. We can’t let this stand. We have to vote out the govt officials who put this law into place. I’m disgusted and ashamed that my country has allowed this 💔 __ #skinonsundays #physiopoetry #abortionrights #mybodymyrules #abortionisnotadirtyword #artactivism #poetryinmotion #wordsmatter #prochoice #fuckyourabortionban #feministart #feminism #womensrights #roevwade #humanrights (at Mexico City, Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxk6s4ADNKR/?igshid=1k5fupqcg6lp9

Fact: it’s Earth Day. I have some sad words for all of us today . I’m sorry that it has to be this way, but I think it is important to mention. _ I have been sick for about a week, which I suspect has a lot to do with the extremely poor air quality here in Mexico City. This very poor air quality means the effects are felt by everyone, and everyone is at risk. Any kind of outdoor physical activity in this level of pollution can be dangerous to your health. Uff. And barely anyone cares, you know? People don’t think about this when they make decisions to drive when the public transportation in this city is amazing. They don’t think about it when they make their employees come in to work instead of letting them work from home. They don’t think about it when they run their dryer instead of air drying their clothes in this sunny, sunny weather. No one thinks about all the ridiculous plastic we continue to consume, causing a ton of air pollution in its production. Even if we think about, we do nothing. I’m not saying it’s all the individual’s fault, for thinking about convenience and immediate satisfaction. No, it’s largely on big companies for not being responsible, for the government for not caring enough to regulate and educate. For real, it could be in our lifetime that we are seriously hit hard from pollution, not just in Mexico City, but everywhere in the world. The sea levels rising, the air unfit to breathe. Chaos and death everywhere. Low quality of life based on unbreathable air. THIS SHIT IS SERIOUS YOU GUYS. There is no reason that the air quality should be this poor, considering how much clean energy technology we already know how to use. We’re all guilty of complacency, myself included. Like, I have lots of plastic in my life. It’s hard to get around it. And not using plastic straws (and cups and forks and knives and spoons) or plastic grocery bags isn’t even good enough. Though it is a start. @leonardodicaprio, please tell us what we little people can do to help. @lildickygram maybe you also know? _ Art: this photo of my sister @shmalligatorrr (w a machete!) in her backyard in Louisville, Kentucky, still breathing clean air, but for how long? 🌎🌲🌿🌴 (at Louisville, Kentucky) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwlIA3bntbg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=174888lnl5gj4

Excerpt from “The Only Now” __ I thought my breath was the breeze it felt like fingertips __ 👸🏽: @ale_garze 📷: @arelopez.photo 🎨: @murabodycanvas __ In the morning I thought we were lying beneath the tallest trees of all. I thought my breath was the breeze it felt like fingertips rapping on what must have been my branches. I deepened and the leaves began to lie down. It was sudden the trees disappearing. The trees disappearing. Your face right beside mine because there was nothing between us. Our faces right beside the sky because there was nothing between us. A bomb cries into a cliff at the edge of the sea. One hundred years later a hotel is built into a rocky cove where a wave keeps crashing. In the morning, that bombed cove has landed inside me. I thought we were lying in an empty pool of an abandoned hotel touching the sea. The water rushing back from a full bank of tiny rocks in the asylum of both the past and the future. __ WHAT DISTORTS YOUR REALITY? __ I miss writing long form sometimes, but I’ll get back to it eventually. The Rest _ Let your mind do the math, your body do the work, and your soul do the rest. _ 🤴🏼: @christopher_miles _ It’s hard to let the machine of your being work it’s magic. We so often feel like we need to be in control of everything. Control is an illusion. I’ve said that before but I’ll keep saying it. Each part of our self has its own job or function. While the soul’s work is a bit less clear than that of the body or the mind, it’s role is just as significant. Chris’ journey seems to perfectly match this sentiment, this division of labor amongst the different parts of our machines. Between the power of his body, mind, and soul, he was able to reach a place where he feels healthy and comfortable. He used to be fat, and now he isn’t. It was a decision he made (and a ton of work on all counts) to lose weight for a variety of reasons that brought to light the realization that his self, his soul is still the same one now as it always was. What does that mean? It means our body is not a whole definition of who we are. It is just one part, where the other parts are equally as important. I thought it would be nice to bring this message to myself and you all today, as my birthday just passed on Friday, as a marker and reminder of this truth. Getting older we are our bodies and physical appearance change. It can be hard esp given how society places to much weight on physical beauty. It isn’t just our body changing though. Our mind and soul is growing, and I find as each year passes, I am happier and happier with who I am, my deepest self. Anyone else feel that happened as they grow older? _ #skinonsundays #physiopoetry #happybirthdaytomen #philosophicaltruth #mindbodysoul #thehumanmachine #poetryisnotdead #spilledthoughts #loveyoself #bopowarrior (at Sugar and Cloth Color Wall) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwQidreH31z/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=460lic4goshz

#tbt w @raquelsofia _ Los Corazónes _ The moon looks down onto so many gardens, hearts growing fields of glass oranges rubber diamonds drums _ When I met Raquel, she told me she was from Puerto Rico and that she was a musician. We were at an open-air artist’s market with live music and lots of jungly trees. It was a random meeting. We talked a little about my project, a little about her music, exchanged numbers, and that was all. When I got home, I looked up her music because I was interested. I didn’t expect to see songs with millions of views on her Spotify. I didn’t expect her to have a website listing accomplishments like having been nominated for a Grammy and a backup singer for Shakira. I didn’t expect be reading about an artist signed by Sony. Why didn’t I expect these things? She didn’t mention any of it. There is this expectation that people with that kind of fame will have an attitude that exudes some level of privilege and power, and while I’m sure some people are like that, Raquel is not. Her personality is magnetic. She’s enthusiastic and talented and gorgeous all the way from the tip of her soul, and on top of all that, she’s kind and thoughtful and open and humble. I love real people. She moved to Mexico City with her two canine life companions a little over a year ago. Since then, she’s been nominated for both a fucking Grammy and a Latin Grammy. She is on 🔥 Our photo shoot to create this physiopoem was more than just a photo shoot, even for Skin on Sundays standards (where no photo shoot is JUST a photo shoot). We had to remind ourselves to get down to business because we couldn’t stop talking. Best case scenario, really. Look her up. You won’t regret it. Spiritual Hygiene __ I keep the scent and smoke of sage in the rooms of my mind where they have the most power. __ 👸🏽: @medicinewheelapothecary __ She didn’t get married. She found the dress in a thrift store and is wearing it in different places amidst her travels so the dress ends up as a relic, as a story. Suom travels between the spiritual and physical realms with fluidity. There are powers beyond just in humans and animals; plants and objects too have spiritual energy too, even more when we allow ourselves to compliment their energy with our own. And the power of the mind may be the most impactful thing we have. Being with Suom brings to life the awareness of this deep truth, and the term used in the title of the poem comes directly from her regularly vocabulary. Its so great. It’s also lovely (in both heavy and light ways) to live in this realm, because the greater power is harnessing how our souls mix with the universe. I hope today’s episode transmits some of that spirit directly to you. Sisterhood __ Teach a woman sisterhood and she’ll never be alone. __ feat @lo_ahuactzin @ambarpurcell @pos_i @reneegal0 @samanthamauricio __ I had the joy of spending last week with these wonderful women on the beaches of Oaxaca in a tiny town called Mazunte, celebrating our feminine energy and the love & magic that comes when we combine forces. I wonder when it started that women were taught to compete with one another instead of supporting each other. At some point in history was it more evolutionarily beneficial for us behave this way? Or is it something that society started feeding to us? I guess the answer to these questions is less important than the present reality, which is that women who work together rather than fiercely and often viscously competing with each other will thrive. Women who feel bonded to other women will find themselves more understood, stronger, wiser, & more emotionally secure. Finding friendship through sisterhood and femininity has these powers in that women share an internal universe of undeniable similarities in our very beings. The world teaches us to judge each other, pit ourselves against other women, always try to be prettier or smarter or skinnier or more girly or less girly or the one with more guy friends or the one who is better at __________. That list of competitivenesses could go on and on. Society is proof of how we as women are not yet standing with each other to this very day. It is so engrained in us that we often have to catch ourselves in the act of judgment—checking each other out to see where we are on the ladder, above or below. It’s ok to notice, ie, if another woman’s boobs are larger or smaller than your own. It’s just when we start feeling better or worse than each other because of how we “compare.” I say let’s stop competing and just stick together. Let’s stop calling each other names, outloud and in our heads, and lift each other up instead. Women of all colors, anyone who identifies as a woman, we are all included in this. We are all sisters. What a world we could live in if woman were taught to embrace sisterhood. We would never be alone. Twenty Fires __ The heart drops twenty fires into her hand and she warms. __ 👸🏻: @prudence.music __ To truly love is to be vulnerable, to let go of inhibitions and feel free to be who you are in the presence of another. And while many think vulnerability is a weakness (which would make love a weakness), I don’t think it is. I guess it’s that heartbreak can leave us feeling desperate and fragile, and in those situations we feel weak, but what is life without those emotions too? Who would we be without feelings enveloping us, passing through us, teaching us? I think the spectrum of emotions, all of them, are a gift, a part of being human, of understanding the complexities of the universe. Thinking about all this makes me wonder: imagine a being with a higher intelligence, a higher grasp of the universe, of space and time. Would that being be even further impacted by emotions, would they feel ones we don’t even know exist? Or does a higher being leave emotion behind? Forget what you’ve seen in movies about advanced life forms being emotionless. Think about it for real. Can’t wait to hear what you have to say about this. “Volatile from the Latin volatilis "fleeting, transitory" always gives the sense of sudden, radical change.” I wrote this word on @alekaim thinking of inequality, & its consistent presence in society. It’s not the idea of short temper I am referring to, but of a sharp turn toward intolerance of bigotry, sexism, and all forms of injustice. The mood for many is volatile, as more of us are realizing that not standing up for what is right is an act of violence in its own right. If you see your friends catcalling women, stop them. If you hear someone make a racist remark, call them out. If you know people who don’t believe in rights for the LGBTQ population, inform them about why those beliefs are both unkind and unfair. If you come across anyone who calls all Muslims terrorists and all Latinxs freeloaders, remind them how harmful those stereotypes are. Perhaps you won’t always feel that that moment is a “teaching moment,” but it probably is. If people do not feel accountable for their actions, treacherous behavior is perpetuated. The open bigotry in the US and around the world is particularly rampant these days—it is making it crystal clear that there are conversations we really need to have. We need to address injustice, not sweep it under the rug. Police are killing Black people and getting away with it. The government is sexually abusing Latinx children and getting away with it. Society is using faux concern about public health to bully fat people. The LBGTQ community is not safe, has never been safe, and progress seems to be at a halt or even moving backward in some places. Stand up for what is right, or you are part of the problem. In the macro-world this means voting for candidates who don’t represent bigotry. In your micro-world, it means using your voice to speak out against the injustice you experience before your very eyes. Don’t let people get away with verbal acts of violence. Everything starts at the micro-level, so don’t think there is nothing you can do. There is. Do it. If that requires a little bit of volatility, so be it. Work harder to bend yourself to fit your ideals. Be volatile when you need to. __ #skinonsundays #physiopoetry (at Cocoyoc, Morelos) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuhDg6gnuyB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=zsdw65lmxgxe

#flashbackfriday // Silence is Free You can buy machines that offer quiet from other machines or you can find a mountain and sit on the side of it; now it’s easy to forget silence is free. __ queen: @nora_vonwin __ Sometimes you just have to remember there are ways to shut out the noise. The noise of judgment, the noise of consumerism, the noise of traffic, the noise of social media. You can unplug all your shit and spend some time away from it, and it’s a healthy thing to do, especially if you find it’s bringing you down. How easy it is to compare ourselves and our lives to everyone else on this platform, when the reality is we don’t really know what is going on behind the screen. I’ll tell you something that’s going on behind the screen for me. I am in the midst of organizing several events and coordinating several canvases. I’m not going to tell you that any of this is negative for my life; it’s all positive and wonderful. However, my organizational skills are total shit, which leads me to feeling massively overwhelmed, like I want to disappear onto a beach and completely leave my current life behind so all the stress melts away into the ocean. I’ve tried making lists, I’ve tried keeping a physical calendar, I’ve honestly tried so many things. While I will never truly walk away because of stress, I know it might always be a struggle for me to stay organized. That being said, I am trying to view stress as less of a negative thing and more of a challenge to push myself into my fears and anxieties. And, I am making sure I take more breaks. I need to unplug more often, that’s for sure. My mental health needs it. I’d love to hear about what your weaknesses are, what’s going on behind the screen on your end. I promise here at Skin on Sundays, this is a safe space to share. xoxo, Jessica 🖤 __ #skinonsundays #physiopoetry #silencethenoise #silence #silenceisfree #unplug #randr #takecareofyourself #mentalhealthmatters #poetrycommunity #poemoftheday (at Mexico City, Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/BueRkunH4lX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12c0befwvsc6a

See Colors __ to be colorblind is to miss so much beauty __ 👸🏿: @mimifitzz __ This poem is a reminder that “colorblindness” where skin color is concerned is not welcome. People in the world with dark skin are subjected to (and have been subjected to for a long, long time) acts of discrimination, hatred, and brutal violence, physically and mentally, openly and discretely. To live with dark skin means to live in a world that is against you, a world that is harder for you than for those with white skin. Aside from the fact that dark skin is beautiful, ignoring skin color means ignoring the history and present of injustice that society imposes upon POC, and the darker your skin, the more likely you are to face those injustices. It is not fair to ignore it. The color of a person’s skin greatly impacts their life, whether we like it or not. Also, variety is the freaking spice of life. Why would we ignore the radiance and flavor and all-around loveliness that is our human variety? By the way, this is Mimi. She is from Ghana and lives in Barcelona and is a beautiful person starting at her physical presence all the way to the depths of her soul. Her thoughtfulness, kindness, and uplifting spirit are things you cannot miss about her once you begin interacting with her. In the face of discrimination, which is just as rampant in Spain as it is anywhere toward POC, she keeps her head high and stays proud of who she is, a deeply intelligent, caring, and wise-beyond-her-years woman. She is an inspiration, and the energy she brings to a room does not disappoint. __ #skinonsundays #physiopoetry #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence #melanin #blm #blackisbeautiful #takeactionagainstracism #fuckdiscrimination #fuckracism #humanrace #weareallbeautiful #artactivism #poetryinmotion #poetrylovers #poemoftheday #sundaysvibes #blacklivesmatter #whiteprivilegeisreal #donotignorehistory #loveeveryone #equalityforall #ghanastyle #fact #speakingthetruth #africana #feministart #intersectionalfeminism (at Barcelona, Spain) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtubznNnhED/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=n92skgsock69

flashback friday: this was one of the last episodes of @skinonsundays I made while living in Barcelona. It’s in the streets of Raval, where I lived and loved and uff it was so great. Being back here has left my heart full and my mind content. It will always be a home to me. Anyway, here is the poem, in English which I wrote on @mevelele and then she translated it into Spanish and wrote it on me. She’s in Mexico now, so I think we might have to make another in the streets of #cdmx <3 And the photo was taken by the so talented @bailaelmonstruo 📷 Anyway, this is a very personal flashback Friday for me, especially considering that I am here soaking up all the beauty and wonder and sun and joy. Uff I’m speechless, Barcelona 🖤 . Right Before I Became A Cloud . When I was a mountain I stopped
dreaming as often, the thing
about intimacy is that the sky
is not watching, and proximity
makes us lighter or more
dangerous depending on
how many moons we’ve
brought into our orbit, water
water kaleidoscope daughter,
teach me love and steal
the anchor, drift us low
in these leaves landing
like undreamed
dreams that collect
in the forest’s corners from
when I was a mountain. . Antes de Convertirme en Nube . Cuando era una montaña dejé
de soñar tanto, la cuestión
con la intimidad es que el cielo
no está viendo, y la proximidad
nos vuelve más ligeros o más
peligrosos dependiendo de
cuantas lunas hayamos
atraído hasta nuestra órbita, agua
agua hija caleidoscópica,
enséñame sobre el amor y róbate
el ancla, llévanos a la deriva
en este embarcadero de hojas
como olvidar
los sueños que colectamos
en las esquinas de los bosques
cuando era una montaña. __ #skinonsundays #physiopoetry #bcn #raval #poetryinmotion #spirals #humancanvas #friyay #poetryonskin #lovethiscity #nostalgia #personalevolution #travelgram #travelart #poetslife #elraval #barcelonaart #alwaysdreaming #flashbackfridays #fbf #nostalgic #artinthestreets (at El Raval) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtWMe5lns7_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=yo210vbhpfty
