I keep thinking that despite what most people would think, Arthur is kind of mothering, just in his own strange Arthur-y kind of way. He doesn’t consciously decide to be, he doesn’t even realise that’s what he is, but…think about it. 

I’ve read some incredible meta on Arthur’s upbringing and how miraculous it is he didn’t turn out way more fucked up, but I’m not going to go too deep into this because it’ll make me sad, but odds are, he’d grown up getting the Stoic Masculine Treatment from…well, probably everyone? Sure, he was friends with Morgana and Leon, maybe a few other squires or young noblemen/peers, but they were all near his own age. He probably had very few positive relationships with adults in his life. The knights in charge of his training would likely have the same kind of stern, stoic approach, considering Uther’s allergy to human emotion and positive reinforcement and the fact that Uther is the one picking out Arthur’s teachers. So the most positive adult relationship was probably with his nursemaid/governess, since they probably mothered him as much as they could get away with, and he would be desperate for any kind of maternal figure. 

And that would probably stick with him when he’s an adult, and then once he’s in charge of younger people, he’d have a reaction like a 23-year-old and meeting a 15-16 year old and going, “what the fuck, who left this infant unattended?” Which is actually pretty accurate, since Mordred is probably….what? Seven or eight years younger than Arthur? So by the time they meet again in S5, Mordred is barely out of his teens, and Arthur would be in his late twenties/early thirties? (Guesstimating on ages based on approximate canon timelines.)

So Arthur tries to be a better role model, drawing on his own experience as examples of a) what to do and b) what not to do, and he ends up becoming like this strange kind of parental figure. Like, he’s obviously not anyone’s mother, but damned if the resemblance isn’t uncanny sometimes. And if anyone ever pointed that out to him? He ain’t even mad.

 Mordred: I’ve always seen Emrys as a kind of father, but to tell you the truth, there are times when you remind me very much of my mother. 

Arthur: ……… 

 Arthur: Considering the fact that I exist marinating in constant terror of becoming my father, I’ll take it.
