I’d say that starting your colouring process with one solid colour is the best way to avoid spaces and keep stuff tidy! In my case, I begin by dedicating one layer to one solid colour such as a grey tone. Working with it against a white background to create contrast lets me see if colours spill over the lines or not. After the base layer is all filled in, I’ll either lock it and paint over it, or clip new layers to that base/grey layer in order to paint details and keep them organized and separate. I hope this helps!
