30 Days of Twisted Wonderland: Day 4

Day 4: Octavinelle!

Oh Octavinelle, you undersea enigma. I love you yet fear you at the exact same time, just like the REAL ocean!

Remember when I said that there were two other dorms that are in my top three when I was discussing Heartslabyul? Well, Octa is one of them! Just like the dorm based on Alice in Wonderland, I have memories of The Little Mermaid stemming all the way back in my childhood. In fact, I have even more ties to the movie in my life, as my high school drama club performed the stage musical version, and I said “gender be damned” as I played the best Jetsam the town had ever seen! So, as I have even stepped into the shoes of one of the characters in the villain trio of this movie, it’s no surprise that I hold this dorm revolving around the “benevolence” of the sea witch close to my heart. I also absolutely LOVE the aesthetic, being literally underwater with cool colors everywhere, and even including a freaking student lounge with an atmosphere that I am PRAYING someone makes come to life one day.

In a way, they are also like Savanaclaw. Like the dorm that I discussed yesterday, many of the students there have ties with animals. However, instead of permanently having animal features on them, like ears or a tail, they have fully human forms (for the most part) and are able to switch back to their normal features after a period of time.

Normal features that look…I don’t know, like THIS:

And I guess that can lead me into the discussion of the villain trio twisted into these slick and sleazy young men. I will admit, I was a bit iffy on how they would portray these three in the game, as the previous chapters had loose ties to their origin stories. Chapter 3 was no different…and man, I was impressed! Azul Ashengrotto was a great character, holding the aura of Ursula without making a note-for-note copy and just shoving it into a cute anime boy. The lackeys he has in tow, twins Jade and Floyd Leech, are also great, being the force and manipulation behind many of Azul’s deals just as their originators had.

And speaking of those twins, my GOODNESS are they popular in this fandom! Aside from a few exceptions, these two have the most fanart and writings I have seen by FAR! Although, I can clearly see why. These two have very different and distinctive personalities that strangely blend really well with each other. Jade is the more level-headed one by initial appearances, having a butler-like persona and speaking more formally, but internally has a lust for chaos and will take any chance he can to mentally mess with his prey. On the other hand, Floyd is more childish and hyper at first glance, constantly having a huge sharp-toothed grin on his face and calling everyone by oceanic nicknames. However, like his brother, he isn’t innocent, being able to turn attitudes on a dime and practically snap someone’s spine with his “squeezes”. These two have the aura of villains, for sure. Although, it is interesting, because while they each have a varying way of displaying that they are each their own person, they stay with their dorm leader and be his goonies. They have a respect for Azul, and love how interesting he really is.

And how is he interesting? Well, you’ll have to wait a little longer for me to talk about Octavinelle’s head, there’s a better place I can talk about him. But I promise that you will not regret it if you have a little bit of patience. So, is it a deal?

30 Days of Twisted Wonderland: Day 3

Day 3: Savanaclaw!

Okay...okay. In contrast of yesterday's post, this is gonna be a bit difficult for me to talk about. Because, while Heartslabyul has always been one of my favorite dorms...I've never been the biggest fan of Savanaclaw.

It's not that it's a bad concept for a dorm; being placed in a literal savanna and being based on one of the biggest bads from The Lion King is actually a really good one. Nor is it the fact that it's a dorm containing (currently) solely students with animal characteristics; it's a really good parallel to the movie that has animals with human characteristics. However, it's mainly the attitude of many of those inhabiting the dorm that knocks it down a few pegs. Like I was saying earlier with my talk about Ace, I'm not the biggest fan of those who are...well, jerks. And with what I've seen of those within Savanaclaw, many of the students are the stereotype of "big, muscular, jerk-like jock". It just really turns me off from liking the atmosphere as much as the others. And unfortunately, this is where I will probably be having the biggest hot take of the entire challenge: Leona Kingscholar is my least favorite dorm leader. In terms of my tastes, he ticks off so many of the "not-so-good" boxes. He has a snarky, not-give-a-crap attitude about a lot of things, he's essentially making someone three years younger than him be his mom-away-from-home, and overall has an air of laziness and entitlement that doesn't sit well with me, even if there are reasons for it. It doesn't help that his chapter ESPECIALLY did him dirty, as there was so much potential to explore with him in terms of what we see about his past and family lineage, many potentials to cause him to boil over...and it's being caught red-handed cheating in a football-frisbee hybrid infused with magic that is the final straw that causes him to nearly turn someone to SAND and eventually overblot. But, that doesn't mean that there aren't any positives about Leona. I do like the overall mirror reflection of his mindset of solving problems he HAS to take on compared to the average student under him. Like the villain he's based on, he takes the approach of Scar and tries to use his smarts to get what he wants rather than pure brawn at first. I also like the dynamic he has with other characters, prime candidates being Azul for the comparison of one who prefers using smarts versus one who ONLY uses smarts, and Vil just for the polar opposite personality he has and the possible hilarious reactions the two can have.

However, Leona isn't the only part of Savanaclaw that we have to talk about. NO, we also have his lackey, Ruggie Bucchi. And let me tell you: This. Boy. Is. Precious. Like for real, he is such a good boy, and there's even ways I look up to him. Embracing the air of the hyenas he's based on, he's lived in the slums pretty much all his life, taking any scrap of non-rotten food he can get and working himself to the bone just to support the grandmother taking care of him and those around him. He does what he can to essentially survive in this kind of world. Yes, sometimes it's with some questionable methods, and his unique magic, Laugh With Me, can have a lot of nefarious uses, but aside from this, more often than not he tries to do earn his living through legitimate means. And all he wants to do in life is do well when applying for employment, and work a job that has good pay so he's well off later in life. Honestly, this boy deserves so much. Take a break from babysitting your dorm leader and have a donut! Lastly, we have our 1st year, Jack Howl. He's another one in the "good boy" category, but for different ways than his senpai. He's dedicated to improving himself, both physically and intellectually, and arguably has the strongest moral compass of anyone we see in Twst! He even has one of the key points to pull a lot of people into wanting to give him head pats...he's a tsundere~ Great, and now I just want to figure out how to make pear compote just to see his eyes sparkle. So yes, while Savanaclaw hits at the bottom for me, that doesn't mean that it is necessarily bad. In all of Twst, you can find good even in the bad. In a way, that's the entire motto of Twisted Wonderland: finding the brightness in people that are considered to be the darkest of all.

30 Days of Twisted Wonderland: Day 2

Day 2: Heartslabyul!

Oh my word, I’m gonna have fun talking about this one. When I first got into Twisted Wonderland, I was on a serious Alice in Wonderland kick. Not gonna lie, it still is one of my favorite Disney movies, and I love the concept of the story and many of its adaptations to this day. However, when I first downloaded this app and started to play, the dormitory inspired by the Queen of Hearts was my favorite, for sure. It still is one of my top three dorms today, and I’ll tell you all about the other two as the days continue on.

I still remember the days when I was playing through the first chapter of the story, focusing on all of Heartslabyul instead of our beloved duo with a single brain cell. While slightly short compared to the length of future chapters to come (looking at YOU, Chapter 5!), it still has a story that I can remember so many cute moments from, from chasing Grim through the academy to gathering chestnuts for a fabulous Mont Blanc to finally seeing our first full Unbirthday Party, even with Riddle’s failed attempt of a tart. And even without the story, I still remember getting my bearings on the battle system through this chapter and utilizing the (very few) cards I had at this point to my advantage. I don’t care if OB!Riddle is considered a tutorial boss at this point of the story’s progression, it took me FOREVER to beat him when I started out! Not even the craziness of Chapter 4’s overblot boss battle took me as long!

And of course, Heartslabyul wouldn’t be complete without looking at our five main men, the largest dorm cast Twst has!

Obviously, we have our single-brain-cell duo who can’t seem to leave us alone throughout the entirety of the story. Starting with the one cast in fiery red, Ace Trappola is definitely the one with the attitude to match the vibe of the dorm he was placed in…as a 100% polar opposite. If anything, the way he loves to speak his mind, not take anything from others, and overall try to be his own person, it would be more fitting to say he is the Alice in this telling of the Wonderland story, rather than simply the card soldier his name suggests him to be. I will be completely honest, he doesn’t hit high in my favorites list at all, But, that doesn’t mean he isn’t a good character, overall. He can be a bit of a jerk sometimes (looking at you again, Chapter 5!), but I really can see how he can drive the story along, especially as a foil to another character.

That character is our sweetie hued in blue, Deuce Spade. As I stated, he is essentially the foil to Ace’s character, far more subdued and willing to follow the rules compared to the heart-themed student. However, that attitude isn’t all 100%, as it’s shown that more often than not, he thinks similarly to his roommate, either due to his moral compass or his previous middle school years as a magical wheel-riding delinquent with bleached hair to boot. There’s a reason why it’s a meme that Spade shares a mindset with Trappola, after all. Though I will say, once AGAIN thanks to the most recent chapter of the story and the Wish Upon a Star event, this boy is officially my son. Even through the stoic outward appearance he tries to keep to have the air of an honor student or the habits he still has from his past personality, he still is a first-year that just wants to experience the time of a high-schooler and make his mom proud. I just wanna give him the biggest hug I can!

Outside of that duo we know so well, how about we talk about Cater Diamond? When I first saw him and the initial aspects of his personality, I was quick to want to rush him as my favorite character just from that alone. However, while he didn’t that mark in the end, he still is one of the most fun characters in my eyes, both in writing and to theorize about. Unfortunately, we didn’t get much through the first chapter involving him, mainly just being attached to Trey as the second main soldier defending the rules enforced by the red-headed dorm leader. However, it’s when we look a little bit deeper in the (very little) info we were given about him, he’s such a complex character, even without a complex backstory. Take all of the pieces we have: the classic socialite front he has around the college and on his 2nd home, Magicam, the fact that he grew up the only boy in a house with his mother and duo of older sisters who wanted him to be as cute as a button, and even the fact that the only person who knows that he can’t stand the sweet stuff served at his dorm’s parties is the vice dorm leader, and we get a character that doesn’t even know who he himself is. And honestly, that can be just as good as a character who has their backstory totally written out, details and all. I hope that we get a little more dissection of the third-year as cheerful as an orange sunrise in the future, but even now I can still appreciate his character and give a good thought about him from time to time.

Wait a minute, you may be asking yourself “Why is Rosy stopping here? Didn’t she say that there were five Heartslabyul members?!” Yes, you’re not wrong, I’ve yet to talk about the dorm leader based on the tyrannical queen herself, Riddle Rosehearts, and his second-in-command, Trey Clover. Well, I feel that they can be talked about at a better time on this list. I’ll keep that place a secret for now, but I will tell you this: you had better be prepared for when I start talking about the third-year club and the second-year with the aesthetic of my own name.

30 Days of Twisted Wonderland: Day 1

Day 1: MC/Yuu!

Oh, the beloved main character. Whether you call them MC, or by their given name Yuu, we have all been able to get to know our little magicless student transported to this magical realm.

As essentially the player-insert, we don't get much in terms of a "canon" personality for MC. However, if they were given one based on what we see, they could be seen as confident and fearless, doing many things to try and either get what they want or make things turn in their favor. Not wanting to take crap from others, and pushing the boundaries of what can be done without magical intervention, even with the monster-cat Grim by their side as their package deal.

One thing I like about the ambiguity of Yuu is that, even though Night Raven College is classified as an all-male school, there is no direct implication of the gender you're playing as, so pretty much anyone could visualize themselves in this position! More and more games with a player character are starting to take a more gender-neutral approach, and I'm really glad that Twst is a popular front-runner!

Of course, we can't talk about Yuu without talking about our manga-only man, Yuuken! While I don't know a lot about him from what little we've seen in the translated pages, I do know he has a lot of promise to be a great protagonist, and has a lot of strength (in both personality and physicality) to not be pushed around too easy!

Guess who’s baaaack~?

Yep! After an unfortunate hiatus, Rosy has returned! 

And, I have a lot planned as I take my place back among the flora, that I hope that all of you might like!

In preparation for the revival, I have been working on new ideas to start filling up this blog! Some are very close to being finished, so look forward to those (and lots, LOTS more) very soon!

For the month of June, I’ve changed the profile picture a little bit, while still keeping the image of our fabulous queen. You may be wondering why I have chosen the bisexual flag as the background. Well...I have been doing a lot of thinking during the reign of what I will refer to as “Big C”, and I’ve been realizing a lot of things about myself. One of these things was who I was attracted to, and...I realized that I may be attracted to more than just men. This month of Pride is something that is very new to me, but I want to embrace who I am, and who all of you who are reading this, as well. 

So please just know, no matter what you identify as, your preference of sexual orientation, or your preference of romantic orientation, I want you to know that this is a blog that is accepting of all of you. You are important, you are valid, and you are loved.

A Beast’s Tea (Savanaclaw x Reader)

If you asked anyone what they thought of when they heard Savanaclaw, any student would say they are the beasts of the school. The most eager to get in a fight, the quickest to knock you down to size, the roughest and toughest of all of Night Raven College. They were the animals of the student body, not helped by the fact that most of them resembled one in some shape or form.

The last type to be seen in a boba cafe.

You hadn’t known a solitary thing about Magical Shift, but a certain freshman, along with his dorm leader and underling, had been willing to let you join in during morning practice on more than one occasion (said dorm leader not really understanding why). So, in order to thank them for letting you learn, you wanted to show them one of your favorite treats that was surprisingly both in your world and theirs.

“Didn’t know there was a place like this off-campus,” Jack mused, taking in the atmosphere as the four of you walked into the small building.

“Didn’t know, didn’t care,” came from the 20-year-old grumbling under his breath. Leona was all prepared for his mid-morning nap after practice, but instead he was forced to spend time in a place only people like Schoenheit would find appealing. And by this little herbivore, of all creatures...

You and Ruggie were the only two of the group who wore smiles. You because the three actually agreed to let you treat them to this kind of thing. And Ruggie…

“You need to do something on the weekends besides SLEEP!” he chided to his superior, still forcing the grin on his face. “I’m sick of doing allllll the chores while you’re there just-”

The low resonance of a lion’s growl shut the hyena up almost instantly.

As the four of you waited in line to order, the comments from each of them increased.

“100%, 50%, 25...I thought you got drinks here, not math assignments,” came from Leona, getting more annoyed by the minute.

“Two extra madol for a TOPPING?!” came from a bewildered Ruggie, gladly doing the number work.

“Stop, people are looking at us…” came from Jack, trying to keep his composure intact.

It felt like ages before you all got to the front of the line.

“Remember,” you piped in before anyone started ordering. “Get whatever drink you want, it’s my treat.”

This statement made Ruggie’s ears perk up in concern. “Wait, what’s the ca-”

“MY TREAT,” you repeated. You knew the 2nd year’s relationship with money, almost as warped as the dorm leader from under the sea: would do anything to get it, frugal with giving it up, skeptical at the word “free”.

Even so, he still ordered the cheapest thing he could find, a small milk tea with basic boba. You sighed under your breath, but you knew it was in his nature.

Leona wasn’t much better. “Get me whatever you’ve got, doesn’t matter to me.” All he wanted was to get in and out so he could salvage any bits of a nap he could get.

The poor cashier had no clue what to punch in. “Um, we have a special for popping bo-”

“Yeah, sure, put it in, just get the order in.”

You were thankful Jack was still deciding as you apologized profusely to the employee. You had finished when he finally thought of his order.

“Alright, and what flavor would you like your tea, sir?” The cashier gestured to the list of possibilities, ranging from fruity to bitter to none at all.

You watched as he scanned the options, but soon could’ve sworn you seen his eyes stop dead. You bit your lip as you almost saw his eyes sparkle at an option, his pointed ears flattening slightly.

“Um...pear, please,” he uttered out, slightly embarrassed with his decision. You had turned your head before he noticed, but you almost wanted to squeal with how the gruff wolf-teen that towered over most almost appeared like a kid choosing a sweet in the candy store.

You gestured for the three of them to find a spot to sit while you made your own order. After the obligatory “is that all for you today?” from the cashier, you paused. Your eyes glanced up at the menu board once more, then to a case of other goods they sold.

“Actually, no…”

~*~*~*~*~*~

“DID YOU DO THIS?!” Ruggie almost shrieked out. Once all the drinks had been brought out, the hyena sophomore saw that the small drink he had ordered was the LARGEST size available. And to add on to it, they somehow sold donuts in the place?!

“Yeah,” you beamed. “They get stock from the coffee shop across the street.”

“But this is definitely mo-”

His eyes widened as you put a finger to his lips, shushing his almost panicked demeanor.

“I said to get whatever you want. I know you’d want a lot more than that tiny thing.”

The two pairs of eyes didn’t part...until you felt a sharpness on the same finger. Being the sly one he is, Ruggie decided to get back at your surprise, nibbling on your finger with his sharp canines.

“You’d better know I’m not giving you any favors for that,” he grinned once he let go, sinking his teeth into the small fried ring instead. “That’s allll you.”

You smiled at the sight in front of you before you heard a resounding call from Jack. “L...L-Look everyone!”

You turned to look beside you...and couldn’t believe what you saw.

You had seen the challenge before: people balancing drinks like this on their chest and drinking them with no hands. Well, there 1st year Jack Howl was, balancing the pear-flavored milk tea on his pronounced chest muscles, and shakily sipping the drink with a smile on his face.

“Some of my classmates...talked about this...who knows when this...kind of challenge will...come up again?”

You and Ruggie cheered and laughed at your friend for achieving this task mainly accomplished by women, but the latter’s chatter died when he noticed how the one beside him was. Leona had finished his drink and proceeded to fall asleep, curling up and laying in the booth.

“He’ll sleep anywhere, the lazy cat…” the 2nd year grumbled in a similar vein to the one above him. “He can drink something he’s never heard of before touching a piece of salad?”

Hearing that, a smile grew on your face. “Well, actually…” you leaned over the table, whispering in his ear. Within moments of realizing, a devious grin grew on his own.

“Shishishi...well, looks like we’ll need to have these “after-practice drinks” more often, huh?” Ruggie was already plotting in his head. Who knew those little bubbles Leona liked were made from seaweed?
