Bangkok 2024
Tumblr media
The one and only time I visited Bangkok was in 2012 when I did an excessive amount of shopping, while Joan kept revisiting the Naraya boutique, and I thought I was being very adventurous when I tried a live shrimp salad from a street vendor only to become very sick and come down with a viral fever for an entire week.
So when I decided to revisit Bangkok this year, I was all sorts of nervous, I mean, could you blame me?
I made sure I had packed sufficient amounts of first aid like my charcoal pills, paracetamol, etc and refrained from eating anything from the street stalls... But I am no way hinting that Bangkok is a dirty or unhygienic place; I just happened to figure out that I have a very sensitive stomach as I coursed through the river of my adult life in my 20s.
Tumblr media
My very first meal in Bangkok: a simple bowl of Thai boat noodles at MBK shopping centre. Needless to say, it was delicious.
Tumblr media
There was a pet fair going on at Siam Square which I happened to pass by when I was walking around aimlessly. Tortoises are one of my favourite animals.
Tumblr media
Snakes are my favourite animals too! This is a giant anaconda and he was just curious about the outside world (all the humans walking around must have smelled delicious to him).
Tumblr media
Siam Center at dusk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Went to a small local bar located in one of the Bangkok Suburbs where they didn't have an actual menu, but the attentive bartender was more than happy to make drink recommendations or serve us drinks of our choice. My partner and I spent quite a few hours here sitting at the outdoor bar (they have indoor seating as well with a live band on some nights) just chatting and enjoying the warm night breeze.
Tumblr media
Stayed at this cute boutique hotel called Nine Design Place which was located on a very quiet street away from the hustle and bustle of downtown BKK, and yet within walking distance to MBK Centre (less than 10 mins) and to train stations. The owner of the hotel was a former flight stewardess who takes great pride in her business and it really shows in the quality of the rooms and services. She insisted that my partner and I try their mango sticky rice dessert before we left the premises for the day and it was pretty good!
Tumblr media
Typical BKK traffic in the middle of the day. And also, the weather was 38 degrees (celcius).
Tumblr media
Delicious Thai food @ Somtam Bangkok located at Siam Square.
Tumblr media
Thailand doing things right. Yes to marriage equality!
Thankfully I made it through the trip without getting sick, but also because I was a little more careful about where I was eating. I even ate a local chicken rice shop located in a back alley and was expecting my stomach to churn, but I was actually alright.
I guess I was just being paranoid.
Bangkok is cool. I'll love to visit again.

ART SG
Visited an art exhibition in January, and while the art pieces were spectacular, I was more interested in observing the people that were in attendance.
Tumblr media
This was one of my favourite exhibits because of all the colour. The subject was just as interested as me in taking a good shot of the artwork.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wouldn't blame him for standing that close to observe this artwork because what looks like a random painting is actually a piece that was intricately woven with coloured threads.
Tumblr media
Too many details to observe.
Tumblr media
This lady was the art! Such a gorgeous dress!

WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE
“The northern and central Great Barrier Reef have recorded their highest amount of coral cover since the Australian Institute of Marine Science began monitoring 36 years ago.
Published [in August 2022], the group’s Annual Summary Report on Coral Reef Condition for 2021/22 shows another year of increased coral cover across much of the Reef—with increases of 7-9 percent in several areas.
In the 87 representative reefs surveyed between August 2021 and May 2022 with a Long-Term Monitoring Program, average hard coral cover in the region north of Cooktown increased to 36% (from 27% in 2021) and to 33% in the central Great Barrier Reef (from 26% in 2021)…
AIMS CEO Dr. Paul Hardisty said the results in the north and central regions were a sign the Reef can recover, but warns about the increased frequency of coral bleaching events, which are a coral’s response to stressful conditions such as heat. A condition from which they still can survive…
“The 2020 and 2022 bleaching events, while extensive, didn’t reach the intensity of the 2016 and 2017 events and, as a result, we have seen less mortality,” he said in a release.
These latest results demonstrate the Reef can still recover in periods free of intense disturbances.” -via Good News Network, 8/4/22

Eating my way through Melaka
Visited Melaka in Dec'23 with some of my ex-colleagues.
Tumblr media
Typical Peranakan shophouse in Jonker. Love the mosaic tiles above the entry way.
Tumblr media
Had our first meal at the Geographer's cafe. I can't remember what it was.
Tumblr media
The name of this dish on the menu was "Pandan-infused rice with deep fried chicken marinated in spices..." SHUT UP IT'S NASI LEMAK. But what can you expect from hipster cafes right? That aside, it was not bad actually.
Tumblr media
Hipster-cafe coffee. It was good too.
Tumblr media
Malaysian style dry pan-mee from a roadside stall called Tengkera Mee Hoon Kueh.
Tumblr media
Nyonya laksa from The Peranakan Place at Jonker Street.
Tumblr media
Durian chendol from The Peranakan Place.
December probably wasn't the best time to visit because of the rainy weather but it also wasn't very crowded, so we were able to do some sightseeing without having to jostle with other tourists.
Also, we stayed in a cute boutique hotel which was cosy and quiet even though it was located on a busy junction.
Adios.

Coastal Acoustics
Went to Coastal Acoustics at West Coast sometime back for dinner with a bunch of friends and had a pretty good time!
Tumblr media
Caesar Salad, homemade prawn balls and spam fries. Perfect starter combination.
Tumblr media
Their signature dish: Coastal Chicken, the most tender and juicy roast chicken (they have a brining process) and the creamiest mash potato.
Tumblr media
Delicious Sausage Mix Grill.
Pricey, but well worth the money.

Diandin Leluk (again)
Yes, again. I visited Diandin Leluk sometime last year, when it was still situated at Golden Mile complex at Beach Road. They're still located along Beach Road but moved to a different location because of Golden Mile's closure.
Tumblr media
Vegetable platter: poached vegetables that you dip in the spicy thai chilli sauce before eating it. Loved it.
Tumblr media
Pork crackling! My absolute favourite!
Tumblr media
Thai green curry.
Tumblr media
Joan's favourite: Marinated raw prawns. I had to give it the miss because of my sensitive stomach (*_*)

Diandin Leluk is now located at City Gate (just across from Concourse, and a short stroll away from the old Golden Mile complex:

Liang Seah Street Prawn Noodles
Tumblr media
Had a craving for good pork rib noodles, so I made my way down to Lavender Street (the food centre opposite Golden Mile) to fulfill my cravings.
They sell prawn noodles too, and apparently, they're very famous.
10/10 will recommend.

Blu Kouzina
Caught up with the gang that I went to Greece with because we were craving for some good Greek food, and that's how we ended up at Blu Kouzina at Dempsey Hill.
Tumblr media
Grilled meat platter 🤤 - Chunky cuts of lamb, beef and chicken
Tumblr media
Kebab platter
Tumblr media
This octopus frites was really the star of the show! It was very fresh and so good that we couldn't keep our hands off it!
Of course, nothing comes quite close to eating delicious Greek food in Greece itself, but Blu Kouzina comes at a close second if you are craving for authentic Greek food in Singapore.
