I sometimes think one word has two different meanings, associations or what have you, because I read it pronounced one way and hear it pronounced another and it takes me far too long (sometimes) to realise that it is the same word.
the problem with reading and writing leading to a strong vocabulary is that you tend to know the vibe of words instead of their meanings.
if I used this word in a sentence, would it make sense? absolutely. if you asked me what it meant, could I tell you? absolutely not.

I read this and my first thought was: "I never want to cry! It either happens or I manage to fight it, but I never want it."
And... I don't know. I just felt as though I should share that, because there's nothing wrong with crying — it's good and healthy to cry. It's so much better for us than bottling everything up. I know that. I don't need to be told.
Yet, for some reason, that was my first thought. My first reaction to reading an affirming, compassionate message.
“but it wasn’t that bad”
did it hurt? did you feel scared? unsafe? were you embarrassed? humiliated? terrified? did you feel confused on why? does it keep you up at night? do you avoid being in a similar situation? did you cry? did you want to cry? who told you it wasn’t that bad?

EDIT: 16/03/24
OK, it looks as though Patreon is not beneficial to anyone outside of the US, so we may end up going a different route. In the meantime, I am still writing and creating characters. You can bet you will see more about this venture soon.
I am E.M. Shryke
Hello, good evening and welcome!
I am an author. I have one published book available on Amazon, with more to follow. My illustrator, @lave-ash-illustration, and I are in the process of producing something new and exciting between us, which you will be able to sign up to and follow by instalments on Patreon (link coming soon).
For now, I leave you with some early character design ideas:

Calling ALL LGBTQ+ Creatives
I am writing a business plan for a company that I intend to create to benefit the LGBTQ+ Community, particularly those of us who are creative - especially writers and illustrators.
If you would like to help me to help you, please take part in this market research survey (it is very brief) or spread the word around.
At the moment, I cannot go into too much detail about my intentions, except I want to only employ LGBTQ+ workers, train LGBTQ+ people and give a large percentage of profit made to LGBTQ+ charities and causes.

Terry Pratchett interview about Monstrous Regiment. Fantastic book, fantastic writer and a fantastic interview — well worth watching, fan or not.

The first creature looked like quite an old tiger, with long, greying whiskers and a slightly bent frame. His words were inaudible, but his body language spoke of indignation and courage. Sadly, he was soon executed on the spot with a bolt of lightning from the staff of (as far as they could tell) the chief interrogator.
If you give me a page number between 5 and 90, I will answer with a line from the Independent Magician.

Hello there! Could we have a cursed fact about turkey vultures? Thanks,
you’ve probably heard that most vultures have bald heads so they don’t get all yuck while going about their daily business.
(their daily business is sticking their entire head into rotting carcasses)

and this is true, but maybe you didn’t know that turkey vultures in particular have a moveable neck ruff!
so when it gets cold, they can just-

zip it up.

comfy cozy!

I miss Black & White. I want to play it. I have the disc. It will not play.
Only 13 percent of video games are readily playable and accessible. No other form of media is as endangered as video games. There is no legal path to preserve or archive video games. You can go to libraries and archives for books years out of print. You can rent a movie or download a pdf. There is no legal equivalent for video games. Games companies do not double as archival organisations and they never will. They have never been about preserving. They are about selling. Which is not inherently evil compared to anyone else but they along with the law are directly preventing archivers and preservationists from doing their job and allowing this entire medium to be experienced in the future.

"You took an oath to uphold the law and defend the citizens without fear or favor," said Vimes. "And to protect the innocent. That's all they put in. Maybe they thought those were the important things. Nothing in there about orders, even from me. You're an officer of the law, not a soldier of the government." -- Terry Pratchett, Night Watch

9. FREE FRIDAY (yes, I know I've fallen behind)
Tumblr media
Excerpt from Journey into the Mists of Zaerl (sequel to The Independent Magician): Feeling more than a little tired, the tiger took to his favourite chair, next to the empty, unlit fireplace. He yawned into his paw and leant his head against the ornate, high back of his seat. The next thing that he knew, Bill was back in the room, shaking his arm. ‘Wake up! Wake up!’ He snapped awake with a startled snort, which might have started life as a snore (only it couldn’t possibly have done, because Sherman knew that he never snored) and stared at the bird in confusion. ‘I had trouble sleeping, so I went out to stretch my wings,’ the bird explained in a rush. ‘It’s a good thing I did, believe me!’ ‘Calm down, Billy Bird. You’re going to wake Alfie.’ He shrugged his wings. ‘We might need him! Belle, too. We’re in trouble, Magician! Terrible trouble.’ ‘Billy, calm down. I’m going to make us some tea. Compose yourself.’ ‘No time! This is important. There’s extra police on the gates of Puenta. I saw them at one, so I flew around to see if they were on the others and they are!’ ‘Is it Mead Season already?’ ‘It’s not about crowd control! It’s definitely not about a sport, either. There were hooded creatures in the shadows by every gate and the police were checking the creatures leaving, not just the ones coming in. If they didn’t believe a creature’s reasons for wanting to leave or enter the city, they searched ‘em!’ Sherman shivered. ‘What are we to do?’ ‘Don’t know.’ ‘My shadow cloak will help me to blend in,’ the tiger said. ‘Only the very psychically inclined will see the magic in my energy signature and such. All the same, it should disguise my being a living spirit and make me appear as everybeast else.’ ‘That’s good. Is it warm? Cool? Waterproof?’ ‘It is rather like silk — warm when it is cold, cool when it is hot. Not very waterproof, but we seem to be entering into a heatwave, anyway. Besides, I have my waterproof fur.’ ‘Fair point. Where is it, then?’ The tiger snapped his claws and it appeared on the back of his chair. ‘Ha ha! Here it is.’ ‘Wish I could do that,’ the bird mumbled. ‘I’d love to be a great magician. Or even a passable one.’ ‘It doesn’t solve all of life’s problems, but it helps,’ Sherman chuckled and then frowned. ‘When it isn’t adding new ones, of course. Now…’ he groaned, ‘what am I to do?’ ‘Well, you can’t get caught with anything magical on you,’ the bird told him. ‘You’d be in real trouble — both of you. Back go the potions, spellbooks and all the other stuff, then. You’ll have to leave that staff, too.’ ‘Ha! Oh no, I won’t. I can turn it into a walking stick! Who would suspect?’ ‘Won’t somebeast be able to tell it’s magic?’ He shook his head. ‘The shadow cloak will stop magic from being sensed or spotted.'
