!!!! Kirishima and Bakugo becoming as explicitly canon as deku and uraraka would be a huge deal for queer representation! BNHA is one of the most popular shonens/animes right now. Kiri and Bakugo’s relationship has developed so well over the course of the series, and is often seen in merch/promo material alongside explicitly canon het ships like todomomo and kamijirou. I know shonens don’t typically dive too deep into the romantic side of the characters. This leads to fans exploring those narratives themselves, using whatever tiny crumbs of “proof” they can get. BNHA doesn’t shy away from insinuating the characters attractions to one another and leaves a lot to the imagination. This, it seems, has led to the fandom’s notorious reputation to ship everyone. A lot of the negative discourse I’ve encountered around the “shipwars” comes from the notion that BNHA fans “make everything gay” as if being gay is a bad thing. I think this is exacerbated by the stigma around LGTBQ identities in Japan and abroad. I imagine this can be incredibly damaging to younger folks trying to figure out their own sexualities and romantic interests. I assigned queerness to ambiguous characters when I was growing up in order to relate to them more, but I was often met with the same reaction of “ew! They aren’t gay, that would be weird!” There are virtually no canonically queer couples in popular manga/anime, which leaves the younger audience with no one to identify with. This can be incredibly ostracizing. If Horikoshi made two fan favorite characters with cool quirks and awesome personalties canon, Kirishima and Bakugo could serve as really positive LGBTQ icons for fans. Horikoshi has already created a few LGBTQ characters and has written them well, mostly straying from harmful stereotypes. I hope he already has plans for the two to grow closer as the story inches towards its end. 

(No, I do not support harassing creators to make ships canon!! Yes, I think the straight ships in BNHA are adorable!! Yes, I think queerness should be visible and celebrated!!)

dabi is the one that remembers being a touya, being a kid and his best and only friend being takami keigo, the boy he was gonna run away with, the boy he’d give up everything for the moment he asked, the boy he loved.

and then he overheats himself trying to defend his siblings from endeavor and a month after that he’s on the streets with his hair dyed black because he couldnt take the sickening clinical whiteness of the hospital or the thick, terrified air at the house a second longer

but he never forgets keigo, thinks about him while his skin is burning and his father sneers, when he sneaks out the hospital window in the pitch black night, and buries him in his mind, only to pull him out on nights when he lies awake afraid. he’s doing this for kids like him, kids like them

he dreams of his father and revenge when he feels like he’d rather die than live a second long, and he dreams of keigo and his tousled hair and big smile and bruised skin when the spite and hate are choking him

then he sees hawks on tv and billboards and he drowns himself in the misery and the drugs and the alcohol wishing there was a life where quirks didnt rule over everything and he could fall in love with a boy without wings 

then he meets hawks and he’s asking to join the league with a confident smile and his head tilted up fearlessly and he doesnt seem to remember, he never mentions being keigo and he doesnt mention touya, doesnt recognize dabi and dabi is miserable and full of regret and

he’s 

simmering with hate, hates the way things are, the way he cant change them and the way he loves keigo still, hates that keigo doesnt recognize him 

and then keigo is betraying him, like he knew he would but he’d still stubbornly hoped, and all the bitterness and anger and rage pours out of him
