III - The Caligo District
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your exit from the party venue was rather stealthy considering the circumstance of your current dress.
After politely excusing yourself from the two men working in the press, you were able to slink through the ballroom. Your only mistake was being so cautious in watching your father and His Highness that you walked right into the snake's gaping maw.
You felt him before you saw him, charging face first into a solid presence. Before you could wobble and fall in your heeled shoes, you felt his hands quickly steady you at the waist.
"My Lady Olores!" Simon Clarke gazed down upon you. His expression was a strange mix of worry and hope. "I would hope your condition has improved?"
You gasped, jaw going taught as you wrenched from his grip in the most polite way you could. A bachelor like him holding onto you would surely have drawn eyes.
"Ah– actually Simon I'm going to get some fresh air. This party is suffocating."
Simon frowned, his brows drawing together. "Oh, about that dance? Would you say you're still–"
"I'm sorry– I missed the washroom and I'm at a point of retching."
He took a step back at the simple word, eyes suddenly blown wide before a nervous chuckle left him.
"Another time then, My Lady."
You nodded curtly at him, lifting your dress to whisk yourself from the venue and into the slowly cooling air of Aves. You swallowed a deep breath of relief, brushing Simon's touch from your dress as you trudged down the curb towards your carriage.
You were pleasantly surprised to see the very same coachman as before tending to your father's mares. A satisfied smile found your lips.
He turned upon the sound of your footfalls, surprise overtaking him seeing you unaccompanied and exiting the party early.
"My Lady Olores! Uhm– is there any way I can help you?"
You noticed the new tint his face had taken, color burning up his cheeks and down his neck. You gave him your prettiest smile, offering him a single gloved hand in which he took rather timidly.
"There absolutely is, good sir," you let him lead you to the carriage door, popping it open. "I would ask that you return me to Cygnus. I require a moment from the party…"
The coachman nodded quickly. "Of course, My Lady. Shall we arrive at your estate?"
You hummed. "Actually– I would much prefer to be left in the city square. I have a few errands." You made yourself comfortable, flashing him another smile. "I leave myself in your capable hands, hm?"
The coachman straightened at your speech, sputtering a bit to himself in embarrassment. "Yes, My Lady! We'll move at once!"
He quickly closed the door, moving round to the front and preparing the horses. You felt rather satisfied by your technique.
You allowed yourself to remove your gloves as the carriage startled into motion. With the pace taken by the flustered Coachman you would be arriving at Cygnus in no time to follow your lead.
What would it be like, if you could see him again?
Your parting from Lev upon the death of your mother and baby brother had been quite the tearful occasion. To think, the last time you had seen his face it had been streaked in tears.
It wasn't your favorite memory– especially not of him. The two of you used to get up to so much delightfully wonderful trouble that such an upsetting memory could hardly be used to remember him by. Lev was always there– even when your mother first fell ill and your other playmates drew far. He was like a rock shielding you from the viscous pounding of the ocean's waves.
You glanced out of the small window, fogged from the recession of the early morning dew. If you saw him again after all of these years… What would you say?
You knew you could recognize him in a heartbeat. You just don't forget a boy like Lev Haiba; not with that shock of silvery hair and those eyes like giant, round emeralds. But would he even recognize you?
You let out a groan of annoyance from the pretentiousness of your thoughts. Surely he would recognize you! He was your best friend, after all. Surely the weather of a few years wouldn't decay that bond.
Your fingers twisted the hem of your dress, nails picking at the laces of your bodice to just barely loosen it. The change in atmosphere outside of the carriage cabin told you that you would be arriving soon.
Cygnus wasn't too far from the capital city– being the kingdom's most prominent trading hub it's relative closeness had a myriad of positive effects on the city's economy.
A deep sigh left you. Who knew that the trading hub would begin to attract pirates? You knew that there were parts of Cygnus– parts your father forbade you to visit– that served as little dens of sin for the less morally sound. Your father had decided complete erasure of things like taverns would destabilize the city's infrastructure far too much, and so he settled on keeping you far from that section of Cygnus.
Everyone called it Cygnus' Caligo district, for reasons you were unsure of– and you had been curious about it your entire life. Now that you were hunting down pirates to somehow find your childhood best friend, it was your best bet. You would have to go against every rule your father had ever set, and enter the most dangerous area in your hometown.
To be fair though, a dangerous spot in Cygnus is far nicer than normal spots in most other cities…
The tiny window at the front of the carriage slid open, and you could hear the earlier coachman speak to you.
"My Lady, we are arriving in the city's square. I must ask– does Lord Olores know of this outing?"
You couldn't help but hiss at the question, composing yourself.
"Of course he does. He knew I wasn't feeling very well."
The coachman hummed at your response.
"My Lady, if you are feeling ill I would have no problem returning you home. If you tell me your errands, it would be my honor to complete those for yo-"
"That's completely unnecessary."
Your retort came quickly, and for a second all that was heard was the stamping of the moving mares. Then, he spoke again.
"Of course, My Lady. My most sincere apologies."
You bit your tongue, feeling guilty for reprimanding the man– however an apology could compromise your mission. Your payment would have to be apology enough.
The carriage rolled slowly to a stop, one of the mares giving a sharp whinny at the abrupt change in pace. The coachman hopped around to help you out.
You had already pulled your gloves back up to your elbows, taking his arm and hopping to cobblestone the ground. You steadied yourself on his shoulders.
"Thank you very much, sir. Here– for your trouble," You gave him a bright smile, placing the coins in his palm. "I very much appreciate your help."
The man shifted the coins in his palm before nodding.
"Do be careful, My Lady." He gave a small bow before returning to the mares.
In that time you had already begun your search for the Caligo district.
Its location had never been explicitly said to you– only that it was bad and that you should avoid it. So, you would have to ask around.
You made your way down the street, giving friendly waves and nods to all your neighbors as you traveled. Making your way slowly towards the more menacing parts of town.
Friendly people you had passed, who all recognized you immediately, gave very vague advice and directions. After all– defying you would be defying their Lady, but telling you wholly is defying their Lord.
Eventually though, the hints started to work out rather well.
When walking the streets of the port city the pristine lawns and clean cut hedges slowly morph into something a little unruly.
The houses stop looking the same, each more unique than the rest. The roofing takes on a characteristic slant– and the smoke runs a bit thicker. In this part of town, the people of Cygnus liked to shed their dignified shells to feed the gnawing bugs of release.
You held your hands close to your chest. All around you people appeared to be celebrating some unknown event– and the areas around you looked rather friendly despite earlier depictions given by the maids and men you knew.
According to them, it was no place for a dignified lady or maiden to conduct a social outing of any kind. People fought, and committed crime– but all you could see was partying, not much unlike the establishment you had just escaped.
A little ways down the bustling street, one establishment seemed to burst with so much music and festivity that you knew deep down you were headed in the right direction. The building was quaint, resting in a cute little nook favoring the harbor. Looking long-ways down the road would reveal the ships resting in port, and if anything screamed pirates it was the bar by the bay.
You stood outside, a determined expression on your face.
The heavy wooden sign swinging on the post outside proudly displayed the establishment's title. It read "The Sunny Sailor", likely referencing the waterside view. Next to the wording was an engraved picture of a sailboat, next to a smiling sun. It was cheery.
As you approached the building, a large and laughing man threw open the door. His belly shook with his laugh, a younger looking man hooked under one of his big arms. You recognized them immediately as the butcher and his brother– surprised to see them on this side of town.
"Oh! Mr. Davis!"
You called out to him, waving your gloved hand as you scurried forwards like a startled mouse.
The large man paused his laugh, color draining from his ruddy face as he watched his Lord's daughter approach him at a tavern.
"Oh, wow! If it isn't–" The man under his arm paused to hiccup, "The beautiful Swan of Cygnus!!" He laughed cheerily seeing you. "Must be my lucky day– a sweet drink and an even sweeter fac-"
He was quickly cut off by his brother, who promptly elbowed him in his stomach hearing his improper speech.
"Stuff it, boy! That there's the Duke's daughter!" He cleared his throat loudly, trying to remove the scowl from his face as he addressed you. "My Lady Olores! What are you doing here in this part of town? This shady place'll dim your shine!"
He laughed nervously, clearly far more sober than his younger counterpart. For that you were thankful.
"Oh, I am so glad I found you!" You came to a stop in front of both men, the younger humming.
"Glad we found you, toOOF!"
The butcher glared down at his brother again as you continued.
"I'm actually, well, looking for someone?"
The butcher's eyes squinted as he thought out your reason. "My Lady, I'm afraid you'll find none of your young lady friends in this here bar…" His frown was deep.
"Ah, well that's quite alright– I'm actually looking for a man." Your face felt hot with embarrassment from the admission. "I thought he could be here… because it's by the water… and well, pirates like water, yeah?"
His eyes blew wide. "My Lady! You're seeking out a–" he lowered his tone to avoid eyes, "A pirate? I'm sorry, but I can't allow you in there on a good conscience."
You went a bit panicked, afraid for a second, he might sell you out. "Please, Mr. Davis!! I need to find him! It's very important to my happiness!"
You pouted up at him, a tactic you would often use on your father that proved notoriously effective. The butcher sighed.
"Dohh… Fine! But if he's not here I'm taking you home!"
You nodded happily, following both men into the crowded establishment and disappearing from the street.
The stench of hard gin and rum permeated through the air in plumes thicker than you had ever inhaled before, making your nose scrunch up.
The inside was like nothing you would have ever imagined. All around the bar people danced merrily– not just men but also women in thin dresses with drinks in hand. The music was far louder inside, and laced with laughter and singing of popular shanties. Not a single person noticed your arrival.
You worked up the courage, clearing your throat before you began to yell.
"Uhm– Excuse me!! Hello!?" Not a single eye. "I'm- I'm looking for someone! Have any of you seen– or know of…" You sighed. Clearly that was getting you nowhere…
You chewed at your bottom lip, Mr. Davis' younger brother sidling up next to you.
"Seems to me you're in need of something a little louder."
You looked at him thoughtfully, eyes scanning down his frame to his hip where a holster rested. You smirked.
"That's a good idea… could I borrow your gun, good sir?"
He looked at you a little incredulously, as if his drunk mind couldn't comprehend your words, before he shrugged.
"Ehh, sure. Why not?" He slid the standard firearm from his belt to sit it in your open palm. You were handling it before the butcher could stop you, stuffing gunpowder down the nose and pushing the flash fan cover forwards.
You hoisted up onto a nearby table. A nearby candle to light the wick– and soon you were pressing the matchlock forwards in the air to dry fire the pistol.
It exploded in a manner loud enough to drop the bar into complete silence– and were you ever a sight to see. Any residents of Cygnus could immediately recognize you as the Duke's daughter, Y/N Olores. Yet– there you stood holding a pistol in one hand, the other bunching up the fabrics of your frilly ball gown.
All eyes were on you, shocked by your brazenness. You spoke before you could become too shy, handing the gun back to the man beside you as he gaped up at you.
"My apologies! I just– well you couldn't hear me…" The room stayed still as you spoke. "Can anyone point me towards the crew of The Black Cat?..."
People blinked up at you, before everyone slowly shuffled to form an empty pathway leading deeper into the bar. At the end there was a large round table, seating many men who all watched you with incredulous expressions. You couldn't help but smile, finally finding your way.
"Well! Uhm– back to the festivities then, thank you!" You hopped down from the table, and slowly as you made your way towards the infamous pirates crew, the festivities started once more.
The crew was eerily silent as you approached. A man sat in the middle, tall with dark hair and a sly exterior. A pipe hung between his lips, billowing smoke. The cards he held in his hands were forgotten after your show, and all eyes of the crew were on you… unfortunately, your friend was nowhere in sight.
Nobody uttered a single syllable, the crew staring you down– likely in utter confusion as to why a fancy maiden was hunting them down. If they wouldn't speak, then you would.
"Hello… I'm Y/N… Y/N Olores. Which one of you would be the captain of your vessel?"
The eyes around you slowly slid to the dark-haired man in the middle. He looked to be no more than a few years older than yourself. He inhaled his smoke, puffing it out and sitting the pipe on the table as he dealt out a few cards.
"So this is what your navy resorts to, huh? Trying to tempt us with a pretty young maiden?..."
His brow arched as he looked at you, some of his crew keeping to their drinks– but their eyes stayed on you.
"Wh- I beg your pardon?" You felt a little offended. "I'm not with any Navy! I come on personal business."
The dark-haired man was going to disagree, but the man next to him spoke up. He was much shorter, his hair– which had been bleached near the ends– hung in his eyes.
"She's not, Kuro. That girl's the Duke's daughter." He paused. "I don't think they're brave enough to send a prominent political figure's daughter into danger to nab a few pirates."
He looked up at you, cold, calculating, honey-colored eyes studying you silently. The aforementioned Kuro, who you supposed was the captain, suddenly stood.
"Well then– don't you think you're a little too rich to be here? Swan of Cygnus?" He held out his hand, and you could feel embarrassment building that the nickname was more commonplace than your actual name… "My name is Tetsurō Kuroo, but you can call me whichever you prefer." He arched his brow.
You took his hand, shaking it politely. "Nice to meet you, sir." Once you removed your hand, glove stained with gunpowder from earlier, you smiled.
You opened your mouth to speak– to ask– to finally find confirmation about your long lost friend. However, before you could loosen a single syllable, a door near the back of the tavern slammed open.
"Captain!! Captain, I heard gunfire!"
Your eyes drew towards the new commotion, body stunned into shock by the familiarity of it all.
A shock of silvery-white hair weaved through crowds and barreled towards where you stood. He shoved people out of his way, and when you could see him your breath left you.
He was incredibly tall– a far cry from the shorter boy you knew. He towered over most in the tavern, eyes still just as big, and just as green as he searched the face of his captain. His shoulders had broadened out– but you could tell he was still rather lithe. He wore his hair differently, parted and styled in a more mature and gentlemanly manner.
There was no denying it, though– even with his taller frame and deeper voice you knew him immediately. This was Lev Haiba.
His eyes slowly trailed from his captain to who stood across from him. You. Suddenly, his eyes went wide. His spine went rigid, and the empty tankards he held in his long arms dropped to the floor in his shock.
"Y-...Y/N?" He seemed to be in complete disbelief, but hearing your name fall from his lips sent you into such a frenzied state of joy– well– you didn't think.
"Lev!!" You squealed happily, running forwards to launch yourself into him unabashedly– much like when you were kids. He quickly opened his arms to catch you, pulling you from the ground and as close to his heart as he could manage. A happy laugh bubbled in his throat.
"Y/N, what are you doing here– why are you here?" He questioned you with a broad smile, pressed against your temple as he took a second to breathe you in.
You sobbed happily in his arms, clinging to him like he would disappear if you let him go. "I was looking for you! I heard you became a pirate– I got so worried I just had to find you!!" When you pulled away you had tears rolling down your cheeks, and he shushed you as he wiped them away.
"I… I thought you left Cygnus? I thought I'd never see you again."
Before you could even think to explain, you were interrupted by a cough.
Lev sat you down, and you both turned to find the entire crew was watching with wide eyes. Kuroo still stood, arms crossed over his chest.
"I think you owe me an explanation, Haiba?..."
While your reunion unfolded in the Caligo district of Cygnus, Arthur Olores still enjoyed his talk with His Highness– until your lack of return had begun to disturb him.
Simon attempted to walk past him– but your father grabbed him by the arm.
"Pardon me, son. Did you see my daughter anywhere?..."
Simon looked at your father, brows shooting up. "Oh, yes My Lord– She refused to dance with me on feeling ill. Said she needed air and promptly exited the venue."
Your father's eyes went wide as he looked at the prince. "I'm so sorry, Your Highness… I must find my daughter– she has an inkling for getting into trouble, and I fear the worst."
Prince Tobio shook his head. "No, Lord Olores. It was entirely the fault of my company. I will help you search." He nodded his regal head, and his aforementioned company began to fan out in search of you.
Your father hung his own head with a sigh.
"Oh, Y/N… where have you gone now?"

II - In Times of Need
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ports of Cygnus were not always so reputable and wealthy. When you were young they were riddled with sickness and poverty. Your mother herself had struggled with it while pregnant with you.
When you were little you often liked to explore the ports. To the young and untainted mind, such places are full of a whimsical sort of wonder that you just couldn't ignore.
So, like clockwork, each day your father would lend you a tiny pouch of copper coins to spend at a place of your choice.
You wandered through the town, eyes caught by every movement of the adults around you. A woman hanging her clothes to dry. A man wiping down windows. Somehow, everything you saw looked interesting.
You never truly understood or saw the poverty around you until you left it. You never really noticed the man beside the woman begging for food. You never realized the man who was wiping windows hardly got any pay. That he struggled to feed his family.
Well– you did see a little more that day…
"Grab him! Grab that little pest!!"
The screaming from on head caught your ear, and it pulled you in the direction of the commotion like a rope around your neck.
You heard men yelling, a stampede of thundering footsteps. You were so busy looking for the perpetrator that you didn't see him careening towards you.
A smear of white as he tossed his head over his shoulder, feet leaving the ground as he fled the scene of his crime.
He noticed just as it was too late, slamming into you with enough force to send you both into the mud below. The force knocked the air from your lungs, hands splashing the ground and covering your plain dress in dark splotches.
He had been less fortunate.
You watched him pull his muddied face from the ground, spitting up dirt. The bag he held had left his hands, falling a foot away.
He looked at you, giant green saucers waking you from your trance of shock.
"I'm sorry! Here, let me–" you scrambled to your feet, dirtying your hands and clothes even more as you clambered for his lost bag.
"There he is! We've got ya' now! Damn thief!"
When you turned around to give him his bag you realized he had already been caught. The towns baker held him by the tattered collar of his shirt. His legs kicked in the air, sounds of struggle leaving him as he tried to fight the man's grip.
"Put me down! I'm sorry– I won't do it again! I swear it!" His voice was choked by his struggle. The man next to the baker, who you recognized as the man who owned the vegetable stand, laughed.
"As if we'll believe that this time, brat!" He grit his teeth. "Shoulda drowned you the first time you took without payin'!"
He raised his hand, striking the boy across the face. The crack of his skin made you scream, eyes just as wide as his had been.
"Stop! Stop it please! Leave him alone!!" Tears sprung from your eyes like a fountain, and you rushed forwards and took three coins into your palm. One for each of the men that had been stolen from.
"I can pay for what he took! Please just put him down!"
The baker dropped the boy, a deeply guilty look on his face seeing that he played a hand in making a little girl cry. The man who owned the vegetable stand was less apologetic.
"Fine, fine. Give me the damn coin!"
You gave them out shakily, your pouch now significantly lighter than before. As the three men retreated off, back to where they worked, you turned to the boy who had been dropped.
He still sat on his knees, chest heaving a little as he wiped at his eyes. You noticed the red smearing the white of his sleeves, a gasp leaving you as you grabbed for your handkerchief.
"You're bleeding! Let me help you." You joined him on your knees, moving forwards. He dropped his hands, staring at you with glassy eyes as you wiped the blood from his nose. Soon it stopped its flow.
"Thank you…" His voice was small, still a bit shaky from his earlier crying. You only frowned, continuing to rid his skin of blood and grime.
"He shouldn't have hit you… over a single coin…" your brow was furrowed and you hardly took the time to realize the awful state your face was probably in from mud and tears.
Unexpectedly, he smiled. His smile was broad, wide enough to showcase that he was missing a tooth– and that the adult one was freshly coming in to join the others.
"I'm fine. Didn't hurt too much. You helped me out there, anyways." His face scrunched around as you finished your meticulous cleaning. Looking down at your soiled handkerchief you mimicked his expression.
Your nose scrunched up as you handed it to him. "You can keep this."
He looked at it a little strangely, color lighting his cheeks. "Alright." And he took it into his pocket. After it was safely tucked away, he looked back to you. "My name is Lev." He stood up, holding out a hand to help you to your feet.
You smiled, taking his hand and letting him hoist you up. He stumbled a bit, and you giggled.
"My name is Y/N."
You handed him the bag of goods he had stolen– the goods you recently covered. He took them, rather abashed.
"I'm sorry I caused you so much trouble, Y/N…" he looked away from you. His face had gone red with his embarrassment. "I should have watched were I was running."
"It's okay. This dress needed a wash without the mud." You dusted yourself off and he laughed. It was true– the both of you now certainly needed baths.
Lev looked into the bag, satisfied when he saw that all of his things were in tact. He had taken a loaf of bread, two carrots and a butter stick. It felt like weird things for someone your age to take. Didn't his parents handle the cooking for him?
"Hey, why did you take that stuff anyways?" You couldn't help but ask.
He looked at you again, frowning as he thought out his answer.
"My Pa is sick. He's been stuck in bed for awhile– my Ma and my sister are struggling to keep things together." He rubbed at the nape of his neck. "People only pay so much for them to clean… I try to help out with this when I can."
He gestured to the bag. You felt a little shocked.
You couldn't imagine what you would do without your father being able to work and your mother being home to cook. After all, the both of your parents were healthy as horses– hard workers too. You never had to worry about much, other than your chores.
You wouldn't know what to do if you had to resort to stealing.
"Uhm- it isn't much…"
You started very quietly, still catching his attention as you reached back down for your coin pouch.
"But, I want to give you these. Maybe it could help you out?..."
You took his wrist, placing the pouch into his now open palm. There was a huge chance your parents would scold you for handing out your allowance. You simply couldn't let Lev go on with his dangerous stealing.
He stared at you with wide eyes, the flush returning to his cheeks as he struggled to form the right words.
"You're sure about this, Y/N? You… you don't need to give me anything."
You shook your head.
"No, I want to. Besides, I don't need them… it's just my allowance– I use it on silly things. I'd rather you have it." You smiled, closing his fingers around the coins with your own hands.
Lev swallowed hard, laughing a little nervously as he took the money from you. Even with his awkwardness, you could tell he was deeply grateful.
"This will help to pay for my Pa's medicine. Thank you!"
You giggled at his sudden enthusiasm. "Of course!"
Then, he frowned.
"Uhm- I'm not sure how I could repay you…"
You hummed, teasingly placing a finger to your chin.
"How about this- you can pay me back by being my friend!" You stuck out your hand. "My Father's always working and my Mother’s always busy, too. You can keep me company whenever you aren't doing chores!"
Lev laughed, taking your hand in his to shake it for your deal. Even for such a young boy his hands were already becoming rough with hard work.
"Sure! Best friends!"
That smile returned to his face, eyes scrunching with the rising of his cheeks.
You nodded, somewhat proud of yourself in your acquisition of a friend. You weren't very good at it. Your father's friends had kids– but many of them prefered to tease you. Especially that no-good scoundrel Simon.
You spent the rest of your day in the company of Lev Haiba. The two of you roamed town, sharing your favorite spots and learning more about each other's lives. You learned his father was a carpenter. He learned yours was in the Navy.
You learned his mother wasn't native to Peregrin. You learned that she had fallen in love with his father and migrated across the world to be with him. Somehow, they ended up in Cygnus.
The two of you were together into the darkening hours of the day– and until you could hear your father calling for your return you stayed together.
"Y/N! Young lady, get home for dinner!!"
Your father's voice boomed and startled the both of you into quiet.
"That's my father… I need to get going…"
Lev frowned, taking your hands. "I'll see you again, won't I?"
His eyes were hopeful and bright. In fact, they never seemed to lose that shine. You nodded.
"Of course, don't be silly!" You locked your pinky with his. "Best friends, remember?"
He smiled, going bashful from the tenderness in your voice.
"Y/N! Hurry up or I'll eat your helping!" You could hear his deep laugh following his warning.
"Ah! Oh no– I'm coming father!!" You called out to him. Quickly you looked back to Lev, wrapping him in a quick hug before you pulled away.
"I'll meet you in the market tomorrow! Promise!" You had started your walk towards home.
Lev stood in a stunned silence, face beet red and heart beating in his ears. He soon remembered how to speak.
"It's a promise then! Tomorrow!"
You giggled to yourself as you reached your doorway. One last look back to watch as he started his own walk home. You stepped inside.
"There you are darling– oh, you're filthy!" She gasped. "What happened?"
You shrugged. "Fell down. I'm okay."
She shook her head with a sigh. "Hurry and sit before the food gets cold. You'll bathe after dinner." Your mother placed your plate on the table across from your father.
He was already eating, humming happily after a long day of hard work in service to the crown.
The current war, while in Peregrin's favor, was still exhaustive and dangerous. To return home for dinner with his wife and child was a welcome privilege.
"Sorry…" you hopped into your seat, quickly getting ready to eat.
Your father watched as your mother made her helping, and he frowned.
"Martha, my love. Have a little more than that." He stood, moving over to scoop more food onto her plate.
"Arthur– the last thing I need is more food. I'm already like a giant barrel…" Your mother busied herself with cleaning up before your father stopped her.
"You are with child. You're supposed to look like a giant barrel."
She gave him a look, half-offended. Your father scrambled to save himself.
"Of course, you look like a gorgeous– er– refined barrel." He kissed her upon the head. "Now come and eat."
She sighed softly, giving in as she hobbled over to sit next to your father. He placed her plate in front of her.
You had already stuffed your mouth, scarfing down your meal as though you were starved. Your mother lifted her brow.
"That good, hm?"
You looked up at her, a little embarrassed, before nodding quickly. She laughed.
"It's delicious, dear. You're the greatest cook in all the realm." Your father kissed your mother again, and you scrunched up your nose.
"You only say that because you're stuck with me, Arthur." She ran her fingers through his dark hair. He hummed.
"Shackled and chained."
She smacked his chest as he laughed, and allowed herself to start eating. You smiled as you swallowed the food in your mouth. Then you asked the question burning in your mind.
"Father! How was work for you today?"
Suddenly things got very quiet. Your father pursed his lips.
"Well… I'm told they'll be stationing me soon. I'll be deployed on the front lines."
Your mother froze, turning to look at your father.
"Arthur. I'll be having this baby any minute." She suddenly looked very serious.
"Wait, what does that mean?" You chimed in with a small frown. Your father tried a smile.
"Means I'm going into the big fight, sweetheart." He clenched his jaw. Your mother shook her head as she continued eating.
"If you even think about dying out there…" She looked at him. "I'll find you and kill you myself."
Your father laughed. "I wouldn't expect any less from you, honey." He laid a hand on her shoulder. "You get so angry this time of pregnancy. You're like a hurricane."
She rolled her eyes, slapping his hand away. You giggled.
"So, what happens in the big fight?" You finished your food, taking a sip of your water. Your father hummed.
"Well, let's see… I'll protect our kingdom. If I do well…" he leaned forwards, as if to whisper. "The king intends to make me a Duke."
Your mother almost dropped her silverware.
"When did you find out!?"
She was a strange mix between ecstatic and shocked.
"Just today, honey. We'll have a Dukedom. Guaranteed comfort for the rest of our lives, hm?"
Tears welled up in her eyes. You didn't understand why she had cried then. You do now.
"Oh… Arthur– this is great news. Such great news." She leaned against him, sniffling just a bit as your father held her. Then, she looked him in the eye.
"Take Cygnus."
Your father was surprised.
"Martha, you want me to take Cygnus? This place is…" he frowned. "Well, it's not my first choice."
Your mother shook her head. "Which is exactly why you should pick it. Make this place better. I know we could do that together." She smiled brightly, and your father wiped the tear streaks from her skin.
"Alright, alright. I just can't say no to you."
The pair shared another kiss, to which you turned up your nose. Your parents were very affectionate with one another– still, it wasn't any less strange to see as a child.
Your father then seemed to remember something.
"Oh, and on another note– did you know the young Prince Tobio is the same age as our Y/N?"
Your mother hummed. "Really? I could have sworn he was older. Hasn't he already learned to shoot?"
Your father nodded. "He's good at it, too. His aim is impeccable, I hear." He continued to eat, pausing again to speak. "The king still hasn't arranged any kind of wedding for his eldest granddaughter, either. The Princess has come of age and is still unmarried. I assume her little brother will also remain out of engagement for a while."
Your mother nodded. "I sure hope so. I never agreed with all of the marrying off children before they can even speak. Status shouldn't have to take freedom…"
Your father agreed, but even as they spoke you could hardly listen.
At the time your mind was elsewhere, on your new friend.
Lev had seemingly stumbled into your life purely out of chance– but you were certainly grateful for the gift of his friendship. A friendship that you hoped would last you well into your life.
Now, you had a chance of reviving said hope.

"Are you sure this is good enough? Yachi, what if I'm doing this wrong?"
"Y/N, calm down! Mika said that this was the way to go– you look great!"
You stood in the mirror, nitpicking everything about your current appearance. The outfit was nice. Brand new. A white top with orange slacks that you picked out to match his feathers.
You had been on dates before, but never one like this. Thinking back, the last date you had was probably to a random fast food joint in highschool. Because of this you were ecstatic when Hinata asked you out.
You had been spending more time with the Harpy, often outside of class where you could see the tension leave him and learn more about his life. Learn more about his home and family.
He was one of the only Harpies at the academy, and therefore he became your only outlet to learn more about them– and that went from being interested in Harpies to being interested in HIM. Your questions about Harpy childhoods turned into conversations about his little sister, and planning one day to introduce him to your family.
Study sessions turned into falling asleep on one another, cuddling into the morning until Yachi stirred the both of you for class.
You often thanked Lil' Green for bringing him into your life. Hinata was the gift that kept on giving.
When he asked you out one day after Herbology, your acceptance was stuttered and surprised. His face had lit up like a lightbulb, and as he walked you home he planned everything the both of you were going to do. His excitement made you excited, and now as you got ready the anxiety was setting in.
This was your first date in a long time. A VERY long time. What if you made yourself look like an idiot in front of him? You had a genuine, real connection with Hinata. It was a connection you valued– one you didn't wanna lose.
So, to combat this, you did what you thought was the best possible thing. You enlisted the help and advice of your friends. Kiyoko and Mika were currently in long-standing relationships that had lasted through highschool. That made them great sources.
Mika told you to dress cute but casual. Enough to let him know you cared, but not too much to make him think you cared TOO much. You thought the last part was a little stupid. What was caring too much?
Kiyoko told you to be genuine and be yourself. She said that was the only way for you to know if he was the one. It sounded like something your mother would say.
Yachi was your second opinion on your outfit. She helped you pick the one you were currently wearing.
You sighed, straightening yourself up for the hundredth time.
"Either way it will have to do, or else I'll be late." You gave yourself a smile in an attempt to boost your confidence. Yachi gave you a bat on the back. Her wings fluttered.
"You've got this Y/N! You're beautiful and charming, no man can resist that combo!"
You laughed at her compliment, heat flooding your cheeks.
"Well, I hope Hinata won't be the first to resist my charms. See you later!" You grabbed your bag and stepped out of the room, heading for the elevator. Hinata mentioned that he was going to take you to the mall, which in itself sounded like tons of fun! Your hometown didn't have any malls, and so you yourself had never been.
Hinata said he had gone plenty of times though. Apparently there was food, games, and shops galore! Just his words had you picturing a grand place in your head, and in a big city like this one it probably would be.
Once you stepped out of the dorm building you looked around, and it didn't take long for you to catch sight of those brilliant tangerine feathers.
"Shōyō! Hi!"
He jumped at the sound of your voice, turning around to face you as you approached. You watched him look you up and down, and noticed the way his face flushed at the sight of your pants.
"Y-Y/N! You- You're!"
You stopped as you reached him, tilting your head. "I'm what?"
"It's nothing. You look beautiful." He gave you a smile, leaning in to wrap his wings around you in a hug. You hummed at his warmth, nuzzling into him. The embrace lasted, and when he pulled away it was reluctant.
"I uhm- I brought you something." He fished around in his pocket with the claw of his wing, tongue poking from his lips before he found it and handed it out to you.
It was a hairpiece that had been decorated with one of his feathers. This feather though was unlike any of his others. Its orange color was especially vibrant, a beautiful pattern decorating its length. It was also slightly larger than his other feathers.
You weren't sure how to react. Was it normal to be given a feather, or was this special? Either way you were grateful.
"Oh, it's beautiful! I'll wear it now!" You took it from him, affixing it properly with a smile. Hinata opened his mouth to speak, opting not to. He instead settled to compliment you.
"It looks lovely on you. Perfect." A happy chirp rumbled in his throat at the sight of you donning one of his feathers. "Shall we get going?"
You nodded. "Oh, yes! I'm so excited! I think we'll have tons of fun and-... Well, how are we planning to get there?"
Hinata grinned at you. "Y/N, are you scared of heights?..."
You looked at him a little incredulously, swallowing hard. "You… You don't plan on flying me there… Do you?"
His grin went wider. "Oh, but I do. Trust me, it'll be fun! Get on my back!" He turned around to bare his back to you, jutting his wing towards his shoulder.
"Well, as long as you promise not to drop me to my death." You sighed, your shaky legs carrying you towards him. You placed your hands on his shoulders, hoisting yourself upwards so you could wrap your legs around his waist and your arms around his neck. Your hold was tight, and you could feel his breathing.
Hinata hummed feeling you against him, a small laugh leaving him. "I would never, ever drop you. Promise." He jumped up and down to test your hold, and then he let his wings open to his full wingspan. For a second you were stunned by how wide it actually was. You had never seen him with his wings fully opened, it was quite the sight.
His wings started to beat, and it wasn't long until the both of you were leaving the ground. You squealed, looking down to see his brilliant tail feathers fanning and the ground getting father and father away.
"Don't look down! You'll freak out."
Your head ducked into his neck at his scolding, and he giggled at the ticklish sensation of your breathing.
"You're safe. I promise you're safe. Even if I dropped you, I'm fast enough to catch you again."
"Shōyō, don't say that! I don't even wanna think about it!"
Your whine made him laugh, and you could feel the air beat against you as he flew. Eventually the pattern of his wing beats changed to signal the transition into soaring. The thought made you queasy. You were high enough in the air for him to lean forwards and let you rest atop him. You still refused to loosen your grip.
"Look up. I promise, you'll wanna see this."
Your legs squeezed him tighter as your face left the crook of his neck. He was right. The view was breathtaking. Everything looked smaller, and the thinner air was lighter in your lungs. You could see miles ahead.
"It's… gorgeous. You get to see this all the time?"
"I do. I'll show you more, too. But that's for later."
He continued his flight, and you settled for gazing at everything your eyes could reach, occasionally pointing things out to him. Soon, the mall was within sight and he was lowering himself towards a suitable landing place.
Eyes started to find the both of you once close enough, and you were sure a human woman clinging to a harpy was a strange sight. You were surprised to see that both humans and monsters were entering the mall, a smile finding your lips at the sight.
Hinata's talons clicked the concrete with his landing, and the second you could, you let your wobbly legs hit the ground. You held yourself as you got used to having gravity again, a silly smile on your lips that he mirrored.
"Fun right? I knew you'd like it."
"I could definitely get used to it from now on."
His ears burned at the implication of your words, a sound akin to a startled squawk leaving him before he reclaimed his calm.
"Uhm- right! Anytime you wanna fly, let me know." He brushed his feathers over his head, ruffling his hair. You couldn't help but smile at his reaction.
You turned to look at the mall, bouncing on the balls of your feet with excitement. "Let's go inside!"
The first thing you noticed was just how crowded it was. People were everywhere! You pushed yourself closer to Hinata, finger wrapping around the claw of his wing in fear of being lost. He wrapped the wing around you.
"No need to be nervous! What do you wanna do first?" He smiled and you could feel the anxiety leave you with his reassurance.
"Can we eat?"
"Yeah, what are you thinking?" He made a gesture towards the food court and you were taken aback by all of the options.
"Well, what do you usually get?"
Hinata took a second to think to himself, humming. "Well, there's this place with good kebabs. The humans there don't glare at me either! Oh! And they have this pastry called back-... bahkal…."
"Baklava?" You tilted your head, and he nodded.
"That's the one! It's so good! Have you had it?"
You nodded. "Once in highschool. In my sociology class." You smiled fondly at the memory and the excitement in Hinata's eyes as you revealed something new about yourself.
"Let's go there then."
He wasn't lying about the kebabs. They were perfect. The baklava was amazing as well. In fact, you knew you would have to come back for more. The two of you chatted about different things that came up in conversation, ignoring the looks you would get from other people.
It wasn't just the humans giving strange looks, but the monsters as well. They all looked in shock seeing a Harpy with a human woman, but you were able to look past it. After all, you did suppose it was unusual.
But, who wants to do the usual? It's utterly boring.
"Anyways, I think we can play some games next! There's this one dancing human game that I can play, and it's really fun!"
You laughed at his excitement, throwing away your trash before taking his wing and letting him lead you around. You would occasionally stop in a few stores to browse, dazzled by all the different things being sold. Video games, clothes, jewelry, make-up, books– it had everything!
Your actual purchases were few and far between, Hinata often trying to swoop in and pay himself. You always refused though, as he had paid for the meal. You wanted to cover a few of his purchases to say thank you.
As the two of you made your way towards the arcade, he had stopped in front of you to tell you about his little sister's recent dabbling in sports. It was rather sudden when a shadow was casted over you. It was like the lights disappeared, and Hinata was engulfed in darkness. He fell silent.
"Hinata. What are you doing here with a human?"
The new voice behind you made you stiffen. You slowly spun around, craning your head upwards.
He was a harpy, but the key difference between him and Hinata was his size. This guy was giant, maybe even rivaling Tsukishima in height. Tsukishima. The DRAGON.
He had these suffocating, sapphire eyes that sucked the air from your lungs. His dark hair fell across his forehead, and his black feathers matched. He was massive, from the size of his wings to the size of his talons.
"Kageyama. It's uh, it's good to see you. How have you been?" Hinata dodged the question, and you felt an ache in your heart. Was he embarrassed of you?
You stood closer to the orange bird in question, placing a hand on him. "Are you friends with Shō? I'm his girlfriend, Y/N."
The confidence in your voice made Hinata splutter like an old boat motor, his head whipping in your direction. You didn't hesitate because– you weren't really wrong, were you? The two of you spent all of your free time together. Surely it was exclusive.
The new, huge harpy. Kageyama. He gave you a once over, staring at your head. He didn't look you in the eyes, and instead was set on something just next to them.
"I can see that. Yeah, we went to highschool together. He hasn't told you about me?"
The demeanor of Kageyama was very different from Hinata. It was hard to picture them as friends. Then again, you had just met this guy. Maybe he's secretly awesome. You can't imagine him being as cool as Hinata, though.
"We uhm- we only recently got together. But now that you're here it's a great time! Y/N, this is Kageyama. Tobio Kageyama. We were classmates. And we were hivemates. Now we're best mates!" He laughed at his own wording. "Kageyama this is Y/N. My– uh, my girlfriend." His face flushed again at the word.
"Hivemates? What does that mean?"
"We're from the same flock. Our mothers belonged to the same hive." Kageyama spoke before Hinata could, studying you once more. "You're human."
You had to bite back a scoff. "I am. Does that confuse you?"
Kageyama paused for a second, feathers puffing up under his clothes.
"Confuse me? No. We all figured Hinata would venture outside of our species."
You could hear the ginger's talons click at Kageyama's words, his brows drawing together. He looked away, laughing softly. The laugh didn't sound very real.
You frowned.
"Well, I sure am glad he did. He's the greatest. It was nice meeting you, Kageyama."
The taller harpy nodded, watching as you pulled Hinata away. The arcade wasn't as crowded as you expected, and for that you were thankful.
The red-headed harpy said nothing, and you didn't pry. You figured he would talk about it when he was ready.
"Hey, Shōyō. I meant every word I said… I just… thought you should know that."
His eyes found yours, a smile bringing some happiness back to his expression and some color back to his cheeks.
"I… I appreciate you, Y/N. A lot."
Your heart fluttered with his words, a grin splitting your lips. "Now that that's out of the way, I wanna kick your feathered butt in that dancing game."
He bristled at your challenging tone.
"Over my dead body! There's no way I'm going down."
Another thing you learned about Hinata that day was that he absolutely kicked ass in Dance Dance Revolution. He had a killer reaction time that made it near impossible to beat. Your score on easy was pathetic next to his on hard. He didn't hold it over your head, though. He acted more similarly to a coach– and hearing him cheer for you made even your losses feel triumphant.
Maybe it was just hearing him scream your name that felt like a win.
As the two of you clambered off of the machine, panting and clinging to each other between laughs, you realized something.
You hadn't had this much fun in a very long time. It seemed Hinata brought so much joy with him– you never noticed just how much you wanted him near. You never realized how you wanted to see him every second of every day.
He just made everything feel stable. He was constant, even on his bad days. Even when he was upset in your arms, and you were cooing to him, he still brought you comfort.
Didn't your mother always tell you that THIS…. This is what love really is?
The two of you made your way outside, noticing the way the sun was dipping behind the trees and the stars were beginning to twinkle in the periwinkle sky.
This time, he wanted to show you the place he mentioned earlier. When you got onto his back you noticed he was slightly less confident in his movements. You tried to keep his mood up, but there was something getting him down.
The flight was quiet, the two of you staying comfortable in each other's presence alone. The sky got darker and darker, and soon the moon was the only thing lighting your sight as you soared up, up, up through the air.
You had no idea where Hinata was taking you, but you could feel blossoming nerves of excitement. However, it didn't outweigh your worry for his dampened mood.
Soon the both of you reached your destination, Hinata taking you down near a little line of trees.
When you hopped from his back, you were confused.
"Is this the place?"
Hinata shook his head.
"It's a little further. The effect is better if you walk the rest of the way. Uhm- here. Hold onto my wing. I know it's dark." He laughed to himself, and you let your fingers wrap into his soft feathers. Feeling them against your skin reminded you of the gift he had given you. Maybe that's what Kageyama had been staring at.
You couldn't help but wonder if maybe the gift had a different meaning. You hadn't done much preparing for any Harpy related courtship rituals, but you found yourself hoping this was more than just a simple hairpiece.
Of course– you were grateful for any kind of gift! You loved everything Hinata gave you but… something like that would be that much more important…
He led you through the foliage. Lucky for you it was light, and not very thick. Slowly, you could see light peeking through the leaves.
When you finally stepped out you were shocked by the sight.
The stars twinkled in the black sky, their shine bleeding into the lights below from the different buildings. Everything glowed and you were so mesmerized you hardly noticed the way Hinata had fallen to sit on the soft grass.
"Beautiful, isn't it? I like to come here to relax whenever I can't sleep."
You looked down at him, moving to sit as well.
"It is. It's very beautiful…" you stayed quiet for a moment, leaning into him with a small smile.
"Thank you for today, Hinata. I've had a lot of fun- really I have."
He turned his head to look at you, a somewhat sad smile gracing his beautiful face. You watched the way his eyes traced your skin.
"You look so perfect tonight…"
He flushed at his own wording, looking away towards the wondrous view.
"I mean– you always look perfect but tonight, you look especially gorgeous."
You giggled at his stammering, softly running your hand over his wing. You didn't miss the way he leaned into the touch.
"I know what you mean. Thank you, Shōyō."
The two of you relaxed in each other's company, but as you felt completely comfortable… you could tell something was weighing heavy on his mind. It wasn't long until he spoke again.
"You can ask. It's alright, I know you want to."
He met your eyes again, and you felt your heart clench at his expression– but he was right.
You sighed.
"What… What did Kageyama mean by that, Shō?"
He gave his own sigh as you finally asked.
"Well… if it wasn't obvious there was something I was keeping from you. About Harpies." He ran his wing over his hair. You could see his gleaming talons flexing with his anxiety. "I'm… well, the average Harpy is way bigger than I am. My sister and I are the runts of our hive. That doesn't really bode well for me in a competitive mating environment where guys like Kageyama dominate." He looked off towards the stars again. "So runts like me either look for other mates or don't mate at all. I was never looking but– I found you and things changed I guess."
His new smile was more melancholy than any smile you had ever seen him wear.
"If, uhm… I understand if this changes things between us. I mean, now that you've seen how out of my league you are I'll understand if you don't wanna go out anymore-"
"Hinata."
"-You deserve more than some runt, and I promise there won't be any resentment there. I'll forgive you– I mean I'm used to that sort of thing. Happened a lot as I grew up-"
"Shō…"
"But I just hope we can continue being friends because- I like you– uhm, I like you a lot Y/N and I don't wanna lose you–"
"Shōyō!!"
The cracks in his voice broke your heart, and when your stern tone reached him he jumped and fell silent. You could see the tears prickling at his eyes. You had no idea it affected him so much, and while you cared about his feelings you were confused.
Even as a runt Harpy, Hinata was still taller than you. Sure, he was no Kageyama but you didn't WANT Kageyama. You had fallen for Hinata.
You leaned forwards, letting your thumbs graze his cheeks. "Hey, look at me. I wanna tell you something."
His eyes met yours hesitantly, his breath leaving him in tiny, shuddering sobs.
"I understand why you feel this way, Shō. Your feelings are valid, and I understand them but-" you gave him a smile. "Respectfully, I could care less about a Harpy height standard. You're absolutely perfect, and you are so much more than 'some runt,' so please don't reduce yourself to that."
You could feel him calming under your touch, sniffles leaving him as you wiped away his tears.
"I'm not going anywhere as long as you'll have me. I want you as you are. Nothing will change my mind, Shō."
You brushed his hair from his face, smiling at him. You could feel yourself leaning in subconsciously, his own body mirroring your movements until the air was thick and your noses were brushing.
"Y/N.. can I… can I kiss you?"
His eyes were fluttering with the proximity, body shuddering under your touch. You smirked, saying nothing as you leaned in to steal his first kiss.
It was slow, passionate, and full of tenderness. The two of you melted into the moment, as amateur as it was, your only thoughts of each other and how you wished so dearly for the moment to never end.
Soon though your lungs screamed for air, and you pulled away in favor of breathing. There was a slight heaving in your chest, your forehead resting against his as you remained silent. You felt completely at ease, a feeling he shared while in your arms.
"That… that was better than I'd imagined…" Hinata's voice was soft and shaking, wings pulling you closer. You couldn't help but laugh at his words, and it was music to his ears.
"You imagine kissing me?"
The Harpy flushed, swallowing hard under the intensity of your eyes.
"I-i'm sorry. That's… is that weird?" He averted his gaze, wings moving from your shoulders to rest near the ground. You hummed, moving yourself forwards to straddle him.
You felt that in this moment, you needed to be bold. It was clear that even in your limited experiences, you had far more experience than him. You hardly minded, though. Hinata was a fast learner.
"Awe, not at all Shōyō." You lifted your fingers to his jaw, turning his head so his eyes would meet yours again. His chest was heaving again, heart thrumming against his ribs. You were in his lap now, voice cooing his name so sweetly.
He would have never expected something like this from you. He could feel himself melting into your control, eyelids drooping as he fought to keep them open. His feathers puffed out, and you leaned in again to kiss his cheek.
"In fact, I've imagined kissing you..." Your hands danced at the collar of his shirt, those damnable fingers dipping inside to tease at his collar bone. He fought the urge to arch into your touch when your nails pressed into his skin. So fascinated by your hands, and all the things those fingers could do to him. "But… I like to imagine kissing you everywhere."
Hinata's gasp at your words was rather cute, a shudder wracking through his bones. "E-everywhere?"
You hummed again, lips ghosting over his throat. He jutted his chin upwards to give you more access. You let your teeth nip at him, sucking bruises into his skin and relishing in the pretty moans that left his kiss-swollen lips.
The moonlight was the only thing providing your vision, and you couldn't help but love the way its color complimented your Harpy's skin tone.
"Would you like that, Shō? Can I kiss you everywhere?" You looked up at him through your lashes, and he could have sworn his soul left his body at the sight.
"You can do anything you want to me, Y/N…"
You smiled, rolling your hips over his. You could already feel him tenting his pants, anxiety bubbling up in your blood. You swallowed it, steeling yourself as you continued. This was Hinata. You were safe with him.
He groaned at the friction, hips jumping with each roll of your own. You could feel the muscles in his thighs flexing with his restraint. You let yourself get lost in the feeling of pressure, panting softly against his skin. You could feel yourself slowly start to despise your pants as they limited the feeling of him against you.
The two of you humped against each other like a couple of crazed teenagers, lips parted so your moans could leave you unabashedly.
"Shit! Y/N, it feels good! Please…"
You smiled at his begging, sliding off of his lap. He whimpered at the loss of contact, wings twitching and feathers flaring. You shushed him.
"Be patient, baby. I promise it's worth it." You gave him a smile so sweet, and the contrast it left to the tone in your voice left him reeling.
You reached for his shirt, pulling it off of him so your eyes could devour his bare torso. He was pleasantly tanned, little orange feathers in the middle of his chest just below his collarbone. They were soft, and trailed in a thin line down the center of his stomach before fanning out in a beautiful marmalade palette.
You ran your fingers through the feathers, smiling at the way they tickled your fingers and loving the way it made Hinata squirm under you. A sound rumbled in his throat, an interesting clicking that you only ever heard from him when you cuddled.
"You have such beautiful feathers, Shō. I've never seen a prettier color." You smiled at the way he arched into your touch, and the way his entire body rolled when your fingers hit the hem of his pants.
"Thank you… I'm- I'm glad you like them…" he was choking on air, unable to remain still as you unbuttoned his slacks and pushed them down his thighs.
You could now see the point where his legs went from human-looking to bird-like. You hummed, palming at his middle where his cock strained against his boxers.
"H-Holy Hell– Y/N! Pleasepleaseplease! Need you so bad!!" His whining escalated in volume. You smirked, wrapping your fingers around him through the fabric and giving him a squeeze.
He cried out at the feeling, bucking into you. His talons continued to flex, burying into the dirt and uprooting grass as he desperately tried to fuck himself into your hand.
"Oh, you're so needy… so, so needy. I can already feel how hard you are for me, Shō…" Your teasing made him whimper, nodding mindlessly to himself.
"All for you, Y/N. Just for you– I'm needy for you!"
He swallowed audibly, glossy eyes focusing on you as he thrashed and you laughed.
"Oh, I know. You're very good for me, Shōyō. I'll give you what you want, baby."
You pulled his boxers down, finally exposing his leaking cock to your starving eyes. It stood proud and tall, twitching desperately in your hand and you gave him a slow pump. He sighed, hips thrusting forwards as you leaned forwards to kiss down his sternum. Your lips trailed over his abdomen, slowly but surely making their way to his hip bone. He tried so hard to angle his hips closer, but you held him down.
"Patience, Shōyō. Don't be bad." You blew over his cock, finding delight in his squirming from the new temperature. "I promised to kiss you everywhere, didn't I?"
He watched intently, eyes big and round as you leaned forwards. You moved closer and closer to his cock, and he could feel himself throb with anticipation.
You looked up at him, wetting your lips with your tongue before moving forwards to finally press a chaste kiss against the tip. His precum smeared across your lips, and you couldn't help but let your tongue dart out again to taste him.
His eyes fluttered at the sight, left breathless as his wing lifted to brush over the back of your head. He was hardly satisfied, his eyes begging you for more of your touch. He ached to feel your tongue against his flesh.
You giggled at his expression.
"You taste so yummy, Shōyō. Can I put you in my mouth?" You felt your own cheeks heat up with your vulgar speech. You watched the way his back arched up. It was totally worth it.
"P-please Y/N. I want you to! I- I need to feel your mouth on me!"
He sounded so pretty, begging and whining for you. How could you ever deny him?
"Alright, alright. I've made you wait long enough, hm?~"
You let your jaw fall open, tongue lolling out to press against the underside of his cock and drag upwards. He groaned at the contact, hips bucking.
"Ohhh, please- again– do it again!"
You couldn't help but laugh, indulging him as you laved your tongue over his throbbing cock. You could feel him twitch against your lips before you opened your mouth to accept him inside. You had never given a blowjob before, and you didn't think it would be so hard to keep your teeth at bay while bobbing your head.
That sound left him again. That beautiful, rumbling churr that made your head spin.
You wanted to feel him cum down your throat, and having little experience wasn't about to stop you.
You eventually fell into a rhythm, tongue sliding against his slick and heated skin as your lips squeezed him. Hinata was a mess, gasping and crying out your name, and desperate to feel you on him. You tried to take him deeper, and you could feel your throat flutter as his swollen tip hit it's back. You nuzzled your nose in his feathers, suppressing a gag before pulling off of him to take a few deep breaths.
His body rolled beneath you as your saliva coated him, dripping down his erection. The feeling made him twitch again in the cold air. The feeling of the grass on the backs of his thighs was the only thing to ground him.
"Y/N… can I ask you something?..." His voice was shaking, expression nervous as he watched you wipe your chin. He stopped you just before you could take him back into your mouth.
"Hm? Of course you can, baby. What is it?" You gave him a soothing smile, tracing little figure eights into the patch of feathers you previously smothered your nose into. The sensitivity made him shudder.
"Can you please- er- I want to return the favor if you'll let me? Maybe… if you put your hips over my, well, over my face?"
He painted the image in your head with his question, and you found yourself overheating at the thought. He sat there, nude, and asking you to sit on his face while you took his cock down your throat.
While you had been focused on pleasing him, you couldn't deny the feeling of need bubbling up in your belly at the thought. You swallowed hard, and he watched you with a searing glaze as you started to undress yourself. Off with the shirt, and then the orange slacks slid down your hips. He watched as your underwear was exposed to him.
You hadn't dressed in anything fancy, a plain white set. The straps of your bra were drooping from your shoulders, and your panties had been soaked through the middle with your own arousal. He had never seen you look quite so beautiful. It took his breath away.
"Are you sure you'll be okay? I don't wanna hurt you…" you undid your bra, dropping it into the grass before getting to work on your panties. His eyes found yours.
"Oh, I'll be more than okay."
He gave you a big, stupid smile. It was embarrassing and made you whine.
"God, don't say it like that! That's so embarrassing…"
The two of you laughed together, and you fell silent when you realized what you had to do next. You took a deep breath, turning and backing yourself up so you had straddled him over his chest.
The view he had of you now left his cock twitching. Your ass was directly in his face, giving him the ideal view of everything you were offering him. Your cunt was drooling down your thighs, and part of him wished your essence would drip into the skin of his chest. He just wanted to feel it, just once.
"You're so gorgeous, Y/N. Please, I wanna feel you on my tongue…"
You shuddered at his words, hips wiggling as you moved backwards and situated yourself over his face. The sight of your slippery folds so close to his lips left him drooling and whining. You watched him buck his hips upwards needily.
"Fine, fine. Don't complain when you want me off though…" you chewed at your bottom lip as you slowly lowered yourself onto him.
You were shocked when his tongue was already on you, ravenous and rolling against your cunt. He let out a guttural groan, and you watched the way his legs twitched as he bucked upwards into the air.
You couldn't help but cry out, humping yourself against his face and blushing as you felt his chin press into your pubic bone. He was sloppy and amateur, but his tongue just felt so damn good fucking into you.
He was clearly getting off feeling you against him, tasting you on his tongue and feeling your weight suffocate his senses. You tossed your head back, thighs trembling and going weak as you fell forwards.
You caught yourself with your hands, and Hinata moaned. The noise was animalistic as you pressed harder against him and you couldn't help but whine and cry out from the stimulation. Feeling your cunt flutter around his tongue was embarrassing.
You brought your attention back to what was in front of you to the best of your ability. His cock still stood tall, his rolling hips bringing it closer to your face. The pretty red flush of the tip had spread across the rest of the swollen appendage, and you could feel an ache in your mind to put him back in your mouth.
So, you did just that. You skipped the teasing, taking him down your throat desperately and almost choking yourself with your enthusiasm. He groaned against you at the feeling, and it left your cunt twitching against his lips.
You could hardly think straight as he continued, swallowing down everything you offered like a glutton. You could feel him twitch and throb against your tongue, and even as you had barely touched him he had started to buck up into your mouth.
He provided no warning for his orgasm, his cum hitting your tongue and making you inhale sharply through your nose. He whimpered between your thighs, moaning and pressing his face closer against you as his abdomen spasmed under you.
You hummed at the taste, trying to focus on licking him clean. You hadn't expected him to cum so soon. He must have been enjoying himself more than you had thought.
When you finally pulled off of him he only continued to eat you out, nose bumping against you when you sat up straight.
"Hah~ Shōyō, you're doing so well! You love feeling me on your tongue like this, don't you?" You were hardly thinking as the words left you, moaning and squirming against him. He groaned against you in response, enjoying the way your hips bucked. You were riding his face, the restraint leaving you as you chased your orgasm.
He let you use him, groaning at the feeling of your pussy on his face. When he could feel your little hole fluttering he knew you were close and he couldn't help but be excited for you to cum on his face.
He shuddered under your weight, moving forwards so his lips could circle around your clit.
That's what did you in, tummy twitching and thighs squeezing around his head as you let yourself go. He moaned at the taste of you on his tongue, pressing closer to take you through your orgasm.
You almost forgot where you were as you came down, nails digging into his thighs as your chest heaved. When you realized you were still sitting on him you quickly rolled off, turning to look at him.
"Shit– Shō, are you okay? You didn't die did you?"
He was laying on his back, panting. He had a closed-eye smile on his face, wings splayed out on the grass. He licked his lips, your cum still glistening on his chin.
"That… was the best thing… I have ever experienced."
You paused, and then you couldn't help but burst out into laughter at his silly expression.
"Well, I'm glad you had fun." You reached for your shirt, moving to wipe your cum from his face. "You're a messy eater, huh?"
He flushed at your words, swallowing hard. "Can you blame me?"
You laughed, moving down to snuggle into his side, looking up towards the stars that still twinkled in the sky.
"No. No, I can't."
The two of you relaxed there in silence, enjoying the afterglow of sex and the wonder of each other's presence.
Hinata never thought that he'd be shot by Cupid's arrow of love. But– here he was.
With a dumb smile on his face and an arrow straight through his heart.

I - Have Pity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The morning air was crisp, still humid from last night's rain. The people of Peregrin woke early in the mornings to begin their days, carrying out their duties under the gentle shining of the freshly wakened sun.
The crinkle of the paper in your father's hands rang out through the small carriage, the noise of the hustle and bustle of the capital city Aves barely forcing into the secluded space.
You sat across from him, a frown etched into your lips as you fought with the skirt of your gown. It was a fancy thing, lacy and flouncy and just the right combination of cloths to accentuate all the assets a young lady like yourself typically wanted to showcase. The color complimented your eyes, and the tone of your skin.
You would usually be delighted to be heading out for a party. It wasn't often you were able to attend them– but you often enjoyed indulging in sweet, fancy treats while listening to the symphonies of a talented orchestra. It wasn't something you got to do in your childhood.
Unfortunately, this party spelled for your doom.
A reception full of men of whom your father served with during his time in the military was the last thing you wanted to stomach this evening. Not a single one of those men approved of your father's methods in raising you, or the fact that he had no son and planned to leave his legacy to you.
Worst of all, there was one thing about the party that really wracked your nerves.
"Looks like the prince's attendance is all over the paper." Your father folded the paper. From the sides you caught some of the words pressed in ink. Words like 'His Royal Highness!' and 'Unexpected Arrival'.
"That printing press certainly makes things more interesting, huh? When you were younger all of our news came in the form of letters." Your father nudged you with a grin.
Arthur Olores was an older man, reaching towards the middle of his life. He had not lost his stature from his years of service to the crown. He was tall, and broad. The darkness of his hair had begun to turn wiry with his age, and his beard had started to grey, no matter how hard the man tried to hide it. His hands were calloused from years of handling guns and ships, and his face was creased with his years.
You were always told you resembled your mother, but let a man spend a minute in a room with you and he will see the vigor and will of your father shining through.
"Father, I don't mean any disrespect– none at all– but how long will I have to go to this stuffy party and flounce around with all of these obnoxious rich people?" Your nose crinkled at the thought.
Arthur sighed, shaking his head. "These men served with me, Y/N. They aren't all nobility. This party will be fun. You can dance, and maybe indulge in a drink."
You rolled your eyes.
"It WAS a party of your old war friends, until news got out about Prince Tobio and his royal pantaloons making an appearance. It's going to be absolutely swamped with stuffy nobles."
"Well, that may be true. But, Y/N… you would do good to remember we fall under the stuffy noble category now. We have for awhile."
You sighed– and as much as you didn't want to admit it– your father was right. The old king had granted him a Dukedom. Control over a territory of his choice. Your father was high ranking nobility by the order of the crown.
And so were you…
"Our nobility is different. You fought wars for it. Most of these men were just born with the privilege." You picked at your nails, trying to ignore your father's eyes. Looking into the eyes of Arthur Olores was enough to strip a person of all of their defenses. His eyes were strong, and you were convinced that your father could rend the truth out of anyone.
"Perhaps. But it doesn't change that I now share similar responsibilities with those men… one of those responsibilities is to honor the crown wherever it may be. And at this moment, Prince Tobio is here in Peregrin's capital. I expect you to engage in your most lady-like behavior."
He ended the conversation by returning to his paper, leaving you to groan in annoyance at his truthful statement. As much as you disliked the idea, it was now your responsibility, as a woman of age, to engage in the games that nobles played with their fake smiles and smokey eyes.
Your eyes traveled back to the glass window beside you, peering down at the cobblestone roads as they rolled past. You figured your father must have been going senile in his old age.
You? Behaving in a lady-like manner with these men who held no respect for you? Preposterous. Your father did not raise you to smile and nod. Your father taught you to hunt, to bargain, to shoot. Sure, you could dance circles around men your age, but you were much better handling the business negotiations your father tested you with.
The men of Peregrin lived with ideals the same as pathetic, old celibates. These men believed women could not hold their own in conversation with men. That women should stick to their child-rearing and eyelash batting. That a woman holding a gun was a crime against humanity, not to mention holding a Dukedom.
In truth, you knew very little about what women your age were supposed to be. You knew very little about men– except where to shoot them to keep them down, or where to plug them to keep them alive.
Your father had scrambled in the last of your adolescent years to prepare you. He hired you a Governess.
She was an older woman– gaunt, cruel, and unmarried. She ridiculed you often for not understanding what she called basic etiquette, and so her lessons never really stuck. Besides, child-rearing is the job of your mother– not a random woman without any children of her own.
The music could be heard from a street away, carriages upon carriages lining the buildings as noblemen and their ladies spilled out in piles of over-priced fabrics. You spotted some maidens your age– fresh-faced and starry-eyed. You wondered how many, if any, of them were here to catch a glimpse of His Royal Highness.
Crown Prince Tobio, heir to the throne of Peregrin. He is said to be tall, brooding and charming as all get out. He's the same age as you– just barely considered a man. You knew not to trust the paper's opinion of royalty.
To publicly criticize any member of the crown is absolute social suicide, if not an actual death sentence. It was like that in many kingdoms, and Peregrin was no different. So, any kind of public address was the written form of kissing his boots.
You couldn't imagine any of it was true. If he was so handsome and charming, why had he not yet claimed a wife? That was the sort of thing royalty did before they could even walk.
You could hear the sputtering of the horses as your carriage was startled to a stop. You had been parked near the curb, and the door popped open as a coachman offered you his arm.
"My Lord Olores. My Lady Olores. We have arrived."
A frown found your lips as you grabbed your gloves from your side and took the man's hand. He helped you from the vehicle, your father following.
"Thank you, son." Your father placed a few golden coins in his palm. "Have yourself a merry evening, hm?" Arthur gave him a smile, and the coachman bowed.
"Thank you, My Lord. I will do so." And soon, he was already headed away from the crowded street.
You pulled on your gloves, watching as your father straightened his jacket.
"Now, Y/N. You remember what I asked of you, girl?"
You rolled your eyes. "But of course, father. Today I am to go against anything you have ever taught me, and hang onto every syllable from any man's lips."
Your father sighed at your sarcastic tone. "Mercy. Just– try to be friendly. This is a party, not a political gathering." You took his arm as you started towards the door.
"You misunderstand, father. Parties are notoriously political."
The reception was nothing short of a marvel. It had high ceilings, and the rafters sported gold-encrusted and crystalline chandeliers. The fire in its lamps illuminated the ballroom, the tables piled high with sweets and drinks. Nobles from all over the kingdom danced around the floor, and if you looked carefully you could even pick out a few foreigners.
Even with your fancy gown, you felt a little underdressed. Of course the other maidens your age wore their best. Their fathers wanted to catch His Royal Highness' eye.
Your father had never once pressured you towards marriage, even when the young men of the Dukedom would approach you in courting. After all, you were to be a Duchess. You didn't need to marry up any further, as your family was bound for comfort with such a title. Comfort was all you needed– vast riches were unnecessary.
Your father was regarded with many nods and cheers after his announcement, as well as eyes turning upon you.
It was true that you had worked up a bit of a reputation around your father's territory for being kind and beautiful. You felt it was all poppycock. After all, human decency to the "commoners" and workers in your territory should be considered commonplace– not kindness.
Alas, they had started to call you "Swan of Cygnus"-- a rather embarrassing title, if you had any say.
Why must they equate you to a bird such as a swan? Graceful, delicate, beautiful. You wouldn't describe yourself in such a manner.
"Arthur! How are you, old pal?" You could feel your father jolt a little, and surely enough a man had grasped him by his shoulder.
You watched your father turn his head, his eyes catching yours for a fraction of a second before his lips split into a grin.
"Henry! You've gotten fatter!"
Both men were lost to raucous laughter as they embraced. A tiny smile found you, hands shifting inside your gloves before you crossed them over your waist. Henry had been your father's friend for many years. You knew him well– but didn't particularly like him in your youth.
"You can say that again! Wealth has kept me rather complacent! I fear war is far in my past." Henry nudged your father in the chest. "But look at you! Still a bull of a man, eh?" He looked as though he would speak again, but soon his eyes found you and a quality in them changed.
"Oh! Could you be Y/N?" His eyes were like saucers, taking you in. "My dear, you have grown to be quite fair! You look just as beautiful as your mother."
"Hey, watch it. Y/N is my daughter, and Martha is still my wife." Your father flashed his wedding band, and you had to look away from Henry's gaze.
"Thank you for such high praise, My Lord Clarke." You tried to smile at him, your father looking pleased with your behavior. Henry only laughed, holding out his palm for your hand. You placed it in his, and watched as he politely raised your gloved knuckles to his lips.
"I watched you grow up, Y/N! Henry is just fine!" His belly shook with his laughter, making him appear rather jolly.
"I was real surprised when you chose old Cygnus as your primary residence! Heard you fixed the place up real nice." He smiled at your father. "Crime is down, wages are up. You transformed that old town into something Martha would really be proud of. I don't know how you did it– but I'm glad she's kept your mind set."
He stopped when he seemed to remember something– looking at you once more. "Oh- you remember my eldest son Simon, don't you?" Henry's eyes searched the venue and you could feel distaste burn on the tip of your tongue. Your father shook his head. You sighed.
"Quite so. Couldn't…" You cleared your throat. "Couldn't forget him if I tried." You forced it out just as Henry had waved someone over.
A man approached. Tall, lithe, and could have been considered handsome if you didn't know of the ghastly nature beneath. Simon looked just as his father did in his youth– strapping. The perfect soldier. With the brewing war, he just might become one.
"You called for me, father?" Simon looked down at you, curiosity lacing his chestnut gaze.
Simon was unkind to you in your youth. He made fun of how you walked, how you looked. It only got worse when your father started preparing you to be a Duchess.
"My boy! You would remember Lord Olores– and of course his beautiful daughter, Y/N." Henry nudged his son forwards, and Simon's gaze was suddenly full of surprise.
"Y-Y/N? Oh my- you've… well you look quite beautiful this evening." He gave you a bow, taking your hand and placing an actual kiss to your glove. How uncharacteristically polite.
"Simon." Your voice was level– not expressing any special opinion. It was vague. "I would hope you and your family are faring well."
Henry laughed at your response. "Simon here is unmarried! No family just yet, my dear!" The older man's eyes caught your father's and bile rose in your throat at the prospect of marrying a man who had tormented you as a child.
"Ah, well that is a shame. I'm sure there are many willing young ladies. Perhaps some are even in this very room." You looked to your father, eyes screaming for some kind of get away. He looked highly amused with your struggle.
Simon gave a deep laugh. It came from his chest– it even sounded sweet. "As eloquent as ever, My Lady Olores. I was hoping I might share in a dance with you?"
The thought of dancing– especially with Simon– seemed about as unappealing as possible at the moment.
"Oh, Simon. I'm afraid I'm actually feeling quite faint at the moment. Perhaps we could dance after I've had something to eat?" You took your hand from his grip. He seemed a little dazed by your rejection before nodding enthusiastically.
"Of course. I eagerly await you in your best health, My Lady."
You nodded with a smile, taking your father's arm and stepping off with him towards the tables of food.
"Well, Simon seems quite taken with you, hm?" Your father nudged you playfully and you scoffed as you nudged him back.
"Never– not in a million years– would I ever marry Simon Clarke." You made a fake gagging sound, sending your father into another fit of laughter.
"Oh, I know my dear. I wouldn't ask you to. That boy does seem rather different, though." He nodded to himself, grabbing a pastry to try.
You kept to yourself that it was likely because of your new womanly wiles.
You looked to the table of fancy treats, noticing that a few could easily be considered "common food." It made you think that once the Prince's arrival was announced, they made some changes to the menu.
You settled for a simple jelly bun– warm and soft. Not too sweet but perfectly filling. If you ate too much your dress would start to suffocate you– and the bodice was tight enough already.
The jelly squished from the bun as you bit into it, pressing past your lips. You hardly cared, humming at the savory flavor. You took a napkin to clean around your lips.
You could hear a commotion, rolling your eyes and trying to turn away from it. You would hate to have to actually meet the Prince. Unfortunately for you, your father seemed to have other plans.
He shoved a glass in your hand, taking the bun and placing it elsewhere as the commotion drew closer. He pulled you close, ignoring your pout over your lost meal.
"Best behavior. I believe His Highness is approaching…"
You bit back a groan, trying to take a dignified sip of your glass. You were disappointed to find it was a virgin drink. You would face His Highness without any alcohol.
Two men broke through the crowd, arms wrapped around one another as they sang some kind of song. They were both very clearly intoxicated– dressed in very nice clothing and giggling up a fit. You had to stifle a laugh. Surely not. Surely neither of these men could be the great Prince Tobio.
One was rather short– a shock of dark hair drooping over his cheekbones. Blonde hairs fell between his eyes. The other was taller and much stockier. His hair was cut down to the scalp.
You gave your father's arm a squeeze, looking up at him. "Those two… which one is His Almighty Magnificent Highness?" You were giggling now, too. Your father stopped you with the coldness in his serious gaze.
"Neither. that is his highness…" he nodded forwards.
You followed his eyes, and the air left your lungs.
He stepped forwards, each step a display of his grace. He was tall– very tall. Your eyes followed up his fancily-dressed form. Strong legs, broad expanse of chest, up and up to his face– only to find his eyes already on you.
They shone brighter than the most brilliant of sapphires. In fact, they were so bright that they burned.
He was positively radiant– high cheekbones and shiny black hair that complimented those eyes. The papers had not been exaggerating.
The procession– Prince and his colleagues– surrounded you and your father. They were all smiles and joyful greetings. All but His Highness. His demeanor was as cold as ice– and his eyes finally left you to instead freeze your father.
Arthur Olores dropped into a deep bow, and you followed in the most polite curtsy you could manage.
"Your Highness! Arthur Olores, at your service and eternally bearing my gratitude." He lifted and so did you. "Allow me to introduce my only child, Y/N."
The Prince looked at you once again. You felt an urge to hit your father for bringing the attention to you once more. Thankfully, the Prince's eyes returned to your father.
"It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Lord Olores. Forgive the impudence of my drunken company." His voice was curt and his sentence seemed blunt and cut short. You could appreciate straightforward conversation– but it felt strange coming from royalty.
"Oh, of course My Prince. This is a celebration, after all. Though I must ask– and please forgive my curiosity– what made you decide to grace this humble gathering?"
The Prince glanced around the room, his brows scrunching together.
"I'm here for you, actually." The Prince moved in closer. "Cygnus was a dingy old waste of space."
Shock met your face, but before you could speak in defense of your home he continued.
"You returned and made it into this kingdom's most influential trading port." He nodded– someone behind him spoke up.
"You have wine, and crop, and I hear enough jobs to go around and pay nicely!" He was bright eyed– a ginger with a spunky attitude. The Prince shot him a deadly glare.
Your father bristled at the sudden praise, laughing awkwardly. "Why, thank you. That's rather high praise." He bowed again.
"Well, what you did is impressive! Nothing but a daughter and a chance of a new start! No son or wife to speak of!" The short, dark-haired man from before spoke with a laugh.
Your eyes were like saucers, rage brewing in your throat at such a casual and inconsiderate mention to the tragic passing of your mother and baby brother. It made you feel ill. It made you see red.
"Excuse you!" Your voice bit through the cheery nature of the conversation, your father looking down at you in complete shock as you waved a gloved finger at the man. "How uncaring and absolutely disgusting of you to speak of the dead in such a manner. You must be incredibly cruel or stupid– and I would suggest some serious changes to your egregious behavior!"
You were shaking with anger– and decided you should excuse yourself before escalating things further. If you could, you would wring that man's neck.
"Good Day." You dusted yourself off and quickly stepped away. Your father called after you, apologizing profusely for your impolite behavior.
You could hardly care. You could hear your blood rushing in your ears. You needed to find a washroom somewhere to calm your nerves.
Traveling deeper into the reception, you found yourself traversing intricate halls and overhearing many interesting conversations. Over time you felt yourself calming, a deep sigh leaving you as you leaned against a nearby wall.
"Oh, where is the washroom?... I could go for one of those jelly buns right now…"
"... The Northern… Cygnus… Mm, Pirates…"
Your spine went straight hearing the snippets of such a conversation. Pirates? In Cygnus?
You felt immediately intrigued, stepping into the room as if you hadn't been eavesdropping before. The two men looked at you, curious looks on their faces.
"Hello Miss. Did you need anything?"
You nodded eagerly. "Oh yes– uhm…" you looked towards the wall before meeting their eyes once more. "I heard someone say Cygnus. You see– my sister lives there. Could you tell me the news?"
You put on your best worried expression, feeling an acute joy in being so cunning. One of the men smiled.
"Well, Miss– there are pirates in the port as of late. Most recently though, The Black Cat docked in the Northern parts of Cygnus. We were just looking over these wanted posters for the press. I work in that industry– you see." One of the older men sputtered his explanation through the smoke of his pipe. You nodded along, lifting your dress to step towards the table.
The wanted posters had been freshly inked– big dark lettering marking unfamiliar names of an apparently infamous pirate crew you had never heard of.
"Oh my… what would they want in Cygnus? It's such a peaceful place…" You talked along rather absently– your attention still captured by the names… until one caught your eye.
Lev Haiba. You knew you had known that name once– a distant past in your life when you were much poorer but much better off.
You had pledged to yourself that you would never forget that name after leaving Cygnus. The both of you made a promise the night before you left.
But little Lev Haiba? A notorious pirate…? You simply couldn't see that boy doing anything evil. Never in all your days…
A bit of an idea sprung to your mind as the men continued to talk.
Perhaps the crew of The Black Cat could still be found in Cygnus…

WORD COUNT: 6.5k (a WIP +)
SUMMARY: A swan dances along with the melody set for her inside her nest. She bounds on endlessly without tears. The swan is dutiful and the swan is without mercy for herself, but inside? She longs for more. She chanted out into the night, but only the moon bore witness to her soliloquy.
One day the swan met a cat. He is cunning, and carefree. Above all he is tender, with claws sheathed and teeth hidden away. Hardly a notable predator to the exuberant swan. She befriended him.
Eventually winter dawns and the swan must migrate. She loses sight of her cat, and mourns him for many moons. The swan's father senses her distress, and sends word to the noble falcon.
He is cold, he is calculated. Powerful, swift, and full of grace. Talons gleam like stars and they sink into the swan's throat.
The ever resilient swan will not cease her struggle.

You weren't expecting it to be so… extravagant…
The driver who pulled you up to the campus got out to open the door for you, and you grabbed your suitcases before stepping out onto the grounds of your new home. Everywhere you looked there were monsters traversing the grounds. More than you had ever seen!! There were Centaurs racing across campus and Werewolves having picnics. Vampires carried parasols to protect their sensitive skin from the sun's rays, and you couldn't help but go slack jawed at how peaceful everything appeared.
"Oh! You must be Y/N L/N!"
You came to your senses hearing your name, finding the source of the voice approaching you. He was tall, very tall and very blonde. His footsteps were heavy, and by the time he reached you, you finally noticed just what he was. Gray blotted his skin, and large horns reached from his head but that could hardly distract from his giant stoney wings. A… gargoyle?
"My name is Ukai. Headmaster Ukai. Welcome to Teraschola Academy!"
You could feel your face heat up in embarrassment. The Headmaster saw you standing there with your mouth open like a fool…
You bowed quickly. "Good morning, sir! It's very nice to meet you!"
He looked taken aback. "Oh-- please stand." He rubbed nervously at the back of his neck, clearly not used to that behavior. "I take it you were able to get plenty of rest on the drive here?"
You nodded happily, a bright smile on your face. "Mhm! I'm really excited to be here, Sir!!"
He laughed heartily at your excitement. "I'm glad! Well, I'm sure you're ready to unpack and settle in before your first class! Let me give you a rundown on some things!"
It still felt so surreal to you-- y'know, being here and everything. It felt like just seconds ago you were back home in your old headmaster's office…
--
"You're sending her where?"
The entire room was tense from the tone of your father's voice, the Dean of your current academy in the small human town of Brooksville pulling at the collar of his shirt.
"Sir-- I assure you that this is a completely necessary measure! Your daughter is our only option! I have to send some-"
"You HAVE to send her? Or you're sending her because it's convenient?" Your father's fists slammed against the heavy mahogany desk, making you and your mother jolt in your seats. Neither of you had ever seen him this angry.
"You're sending my daughter a hundred miles away to a university full of DANGEROUS CREATURES and you didn't think to say ANYTHING?"
Your mother let her brow furrow. "Now honey, we don't talk about monsters like that in this family. That would really hurt Lilith's feelings." She was frowning, her hand wrapping around your father's wrist. However, calming him seemed pointless.
"To hell with Lilith!! She's a monster, but she's domesticated! This is our baby, Mai!! Our sweet Y/N! You really think we can send her so far away?" There was an edge of hurt in your father's voice, his expression desperate as he stared back at your mother, almost hopelessly.
You stood abruptly from your seat, and suddenly all eyes were on you. "Dad. I've already signed the waiver. I'm going-- I WANT to go! This place isn't where I belong! Everyone here is so closed minded…" you sighed, looking down towards your feet. "I'm sorry, but I wanna taste the city! They're offering a human exchange at no cost! Think of everything I'll learn! All the people I'll meet!!"
"People? You'll be the only person there!" Your father sighed, holding his face in his hands before he finally swallowed his pride. He realized that this is what you wanted. Who was he to keep you from your dreams? However, at this moment, he was seriously regretting letting his sister in law tell you all of those stories.
Your father stood, looking you directly in the mind. "You'll call- or at least text once a day. And you'll come back for holidays… and breaks… and any free time… and I'll let you go."
Your face lit up in a smile as you jumped forwards, wrapping your arms around him in a bone crushing hug. "I promise!! Thank you dad, thank you!!" You pulled away, adrenaline rushing through your veins. "Oh my god, I have to pack!!"
The Dean let out a nervous laugh, obviously put off by the quick change in atmosphere. This family sure was strange. He'd never met an interracial family like yours. A vampire for an aunt. Honestly, you belonged in the city. "Well- we've already arranged transportation. The Headmaster of Teraschola Academy is apparently very excited for a human to finally be joining their program. I trust he already figured out proper boarding and meal plans."
You couldn't help but smile at the name Teraschola Academy. Teraschola. The entire name was basically a pun in itself. You picked up your book bag, throwing it over your shoulder. "How will I be transported?"
The Dean sighed. "Well, I have a driver who's going to get you to the University. After that you're no longer my liability."
You gave the Dean a glare, shaking your head. "Fine. I'm guessing your driver is going to show up at my house?"
All it took was the Dean to give you a nod before you were exiting the room. Your parents stood quickly, your mother thanking the Dean before following you out of the office.
"Y/N! Y/N honey! Wait for us!" Your mother called after you as your father and herself struggled to catch up to the way you were stomping towards the exit of the academy.
Eventually your father reached you, stopping you with a hand to your shoulder. "Hey, what's wrong with you, kiddo?"
You froze, starting to break down at his words before you fell against your dad, sobbing silently against his chest. He said nothing, only patting your back gently. He was confused when you pulled away, smiling. "I'm so excited…"
The truth was you had wanted to get out of there for a very long time. Many of your peers were strictly hateful towards monsters, and when they had discovered you were related to one, even if only by marriage, they marked you as an outlaw. A weird freak. Even the teachers had mistreated you. Finally you were going somewhere where you might belong!
The ride back home was full of chatter, your mother on the phone telling every single family member she could call about the sudden news. Your father was silent in the driver's seat, and you were on your phone, sending texts to the few friends you did have. It wasn't anything much. You were just updating them on your transfer and move.
When your father pulled into the driveway you were inside the house as quickly as your feet would carry you, running straight for your room and throwing open your closet to grab two plain suitcases. You started throwing your necessities into them, humming to yourself before there was a knock at the door.
You called out a small "Come in!" Before the door opened. You turned around to see a dark haired woman in the doorway, giving you a small smile. "So, you're transferring huh?"
"Aunt Lilith!" You rushed forwards to hug her, and she laughed happily at the contact, patting your back. "I came as soon as I heard! Did you know I used to go there too?" She smiled, walking into the room with you to sit on the bed. "Your mother wanted me to give you advice and help you out anyway I could. I didn't know they were accepting humans now."
You shook your head. "They aren't. It's an exchange plan. Apparently I'm going to help the world take large strides in ending the segregation between humans and monsters."
Lilith laughed at the righteous tone in your voice, smoothing her hand gently down your back. "Well, I don't have it the hardest as a monster. I look considerably human, but I know a lot of friends who still experience a ton of prejudice." She reached into her purse, the same one she's always carried since you were a child. You could never get over how ridiculously large it was. It could probably fit a microwave oven inside, but thanks to her superior strength she had no trouble lifting it. She pulled a thin box from the bag, handing it to you. "I decided I'd get you set up a little early.
You looked at her in a bit of surprise before opening the box and gasping at its contents. The first thing you immediately pulled from the bag was a breton cap decorated with the school's colors. The main cap color was a deep charcoal black, and in the middle of the cap was a circular shaped embroidery in white that contained the Teraschola Academy logo of a black clawed hand hanging over a bold 'TS'. When you pulled the cap from the box and placed it on your head, you noticed another item in the box. It was a thick leather journal, also crested with the college's logo. You pulled it out, noticing the crisp ink writing out Lilith's full and maiden name. "Thank you! But- what's this?"
Lilith gave you a smile. "Well, I was going to save this stuff for your cousins but I think you'll need it more." She ran her sharp nails across the back of the book, humming softly. "When I was younger I wanted to attend this college so much that I compiled everything I could learn about it in here. I continued to fill it out throughout my stay. Anything you could ever need to know is in there."
You opened the journal carefully, flipping through the pages of seemingly endless information and smiling. "It's wonderful…"
Your aunt nodded. "Of course… anything for my favorite niece! Now… let me help you pack!"
--
You smiled fondly at the memory, looking back up at your new headmaster as he explained the school's hours to you.
"Now, we realize that human sleep schedules look very different from our monsters, so we have you on a split day schedule. Today your classes will be in the day, but tomorrow they will be night classes. This is so you can truly experience everything our academy has to offer without having to sleep at atrocious hours of the day."
You nodded, brows furrowing when he handed you an envelope and a large backpack.
"Here's your schedule and almost everything you'll need for class is in that bag. Oh, and congratulations on your enrollment. Was the selection process rigorous?"
You looked up at the headmaster's smiling face, and decided it best to swerve the question. You'd rather not get into how your old academy was full of humanity supremacists. "Oh- well I was a likely candidate… my uhm- grades were good and I have an aunt that graduated from here…"
Headmaster Ukai lifted a brow. "An Aunt? That's interesting. Well, I just want you to know that even though we are a monster academy, I'll do everything in my power to make sure you're well accommodated for! If you ever have any problems don't hesitate to come straight to my office!"
He looked off behind your shoulder, raising a hand to someone behind you. "Speaking of accomodations! Y/N! Meet your new roomie!"
You spun around on your heel, coming face to face with a short girl. She had golden blond hair styled in a young looking, half up side ponytail and big, round eyes that resembled the color of tree bark. Her pupils were large and made her eyes appear bug-like, and her skin almost sparked in the sunlight. However, the thing you found most enticing about her appearance was the silky, see through baby blue material draping down her back. It took you a moment to realize they were wings.
She gave you a small nod, reaching out to shake your hand in a surprisingly human manner. "Y/N it's so nice to meet you! My name is Hitoka Yachi! I'm your roommate!"
You could see her cheeks tint a little brighter when you took her hand, giving it a firm shake. "Likewise!"
Headmaster Ukai laughed. "Well, I hope you two can get along. I specifically chose Yachi because of her experience with humans!"
Yachi nodded. "I was actually raised by humans! I've never even met my monster kin…" she rubbed the back of her neck nervously. "I look the part but I don't know much about my own kind, so I was relieved to find out I'd be roommates with a human girl! It'll be just like home!" She took one of your suitcases for you. "Thanks for your help, Headmaster Ukai! I'll take it from here!" She gave him a smile, and he nodded before turning to walk back into the academy.
"Well, let's get you over to the dormitories. I'm sure you really wanna unpack before you have to get to class. I can help you too! Don't worry, us pixies are notorious for our cleaning skills!"
You smiled as you walked after her, taking in the scenery. "That's great because I got a little over excited and packed a lot…"
Yachi laughed. "Oh, I did too! But don't worry! The dorm rooms are very nice!" You followed behind her, and while taking in the scenery you couldn't help but notice all of the strange looks you were getting from the monsters on campus. Some of them were glaring, and some of them looked as if they were trying to discern whether or not you were actually human. While you were paying attention to the strange looks, Yachi was explaining the dorm systems.
"Now there are four dorm buildings. They are split by gender, and then they are split by whether you are diurnal or nocturnal!" She approached one of the large dorm buildings, swiping a card and having the doors unlock so she could walk you in. "We're in the female nocturnal dorms. Not only am I typically nocturnal, except for well-- today-- the Headmaster set this up so while you had day classes you could sleep at night unbothered, and the same for the other way around."
She led you to an elevator at the end of a hallway, pressing the up button. "We're on floor 3, room 213! Also, our neighbors can be pretty cranky so I'd just avoid them." She stepped inside once the doors were open, and once you were inside she pressed the button labeled with the Roman numeral for three and you watched the doors slide closed. Everything here was so much fancier than your old school.
"The campus has maps everywhere so if you get lost, look for one of those! Uhm--- what else?... Oh! All of the professors are pretty nice!" She looked at you and how you stayed quiet, placing a hand over her mouth. "Sorry, am I talking too much?"
You looked back at her, quickly shaking your head. "No, not at all! I'm just distracted by how nice everything is…"
She smiled, laughing once the elevator doors opened and she started leading you down the hallway. "Yeah, that's exactly what I thought when I first enrolled!" Eventually the both of you stopped outside of a half decorated wooden door. "Here we are! I left half the door clean in case you wanted to personally customize it!"
You giggled at how cute Yachi's detail work was before she used her key to unlock the door. When you stepped inside you saw just how exquisite her side of the room was. Her bed had a silk canopy, and she had many plants decorating the room. However, your side of the room was completely blank. All you had was a bed, a dresser, a desk, and of course a computer. You sat your stuff down, looking around in awe.
"Everything is so pretty in here… I would definitely like your help with decorating!!" You unzipped your suitcases and immediately started packing your clothes away into your dresser, noticing half of it was already packed with crisp, clean uniforms. You hummed, and Yachi came over to help you by hanging the few pictures you brought with you of your family.
It didn't take very long for the both of you to finish unpacking, and while the room still looked very plain, it definitely made you feel more at home. Besides, you could always add more later on! You slid your suitcases under your bed for safekeeping before opening the backpack you were handed. Inside was a school laptop and a plethora of different interesting textbooks. You pulled them out before Yachi stepped over to pick up the envelope the Headmaster handed you, flipping it open and pouring out it's contents.
A key, some slips of paper, and a key card on a Teraschola Academy lanyard. Yachi hummed, attaching the key to the lanyard. "That's your student ID and your dorm room key! And this-!" She picked up the papers. "Is your schedule and all of your account info. She handed you your account info before looking through your schedule and humming to herself.
"He really did give you a balanced schedule. I'm not sure how you're going to do in Intro to the Arcane Arts, but I'm sure you'll figure it out!" She gave you a smile before handing you your schedule. "You might wanna get your uniform on! I need to escort you to your first class."
You stood up quickly and nodded, rushing over to your dresser. "Right! Uhm--- I could use some help though…"
Yachi laughed, nodding. "Yeah I figured. The thing has like-- eight layers…"
As she was helping you pull your uniform from your dresser you finally took everything in. You were really here. Teraschola Academy. Ready to start a new adventure of academic learning! You were going to learn things other humans could never even dream of! And maybe, just maybe, you'd meet some very interesting people along the way...

WORD COUNT: 127,908 (and counting! +)
SUMMARY: Monsters had always been there-- all throughout history their names were whispered in the night, carried through the wind to strike fear in the hearts of children. Stories of heroic characters who slew great and evil monsters were praised in the storybooks. Perseus and Medusa, Beowulf and Grendel, Bellerophon and the Chimera.
When you were a child you always had a strong distaste for these stories, after all, why did monsters deserve any less respect than humans? Why were they always depicted as evil, vindictive beings? Every monster you had ever met had been gentle towards you-- though you had to admit- other than your aunt, your experiences with monsters were few and far in between.
It was often that monsters and humans didn't get along very well, and this caused a quick divide in populations. Some cities were always human cities. Some cities were always monster cities. So what happens when your world is flipped upside down and suddenly you find yourself surrounded by new, inhuman faces?
