A Rose by any other name…

I’m so thrilled to receive admin’s choice this week! I do recommend voting this Thursday @ 10am est to Friday at 10pm est for next week’s prompt! If you’d like to read the first story I wrote for this prompt which included Neville and the Hogwarts Greenhouses I’ve added it to the AO3 link. Here’s the one I submitted -

The clink of the cells at the DMLE snicked into the air as Draco stepped forward. There was Harry, his red auror robes wearing him in the way they always seemed to be and leaning every ounce of his weight on the bars.

“Potter.”

“Malfoy.”

Harry swept his hand towards the back, falling into step as Draco’s footfalls took the echoey corridor towards the witch that awaited them. There she sat, knees drawn up to her chest. The mane of her mother displaying the colour of her father’s but all her. Blue eyes that welled with tears lifted to meet Draco’s own and his lips twitched, throttling a smile.

“Rose.”

“Draco.” The eyes sliced over and narrowed slightly. “Uncle Harry.”

Harry rucked his hand through his hair and sighed. “Your stepfather has paid your bail and you’re allowed to go now. I do suggest telling your mother before she ferrets it out.”

Draco snorted, rolling his eyes and sighing into the silence.

“Shall we go?”

At seven Draco found Rose with an erkling in her bedroom.

“You realise it has to go back to the forest around the manor, don’t you?”

Rose grabbed the two-foot creature with bright yellow eyes and a taste for child-flesh and pushed it behind herself. She squared herself against him just as her mother had so often.

“You can’t tell mum.”

“We can find a way to tell her together.”

And it became a thing.

At twelve Draco found Rose riding a broomstick around the neighbour’s house down the lane.

He’d moved in by then and when he’d found his broomstick gone he’d gone looking and found her hurling rotten eggs at the window of a boy who’d been teasing her earlier that day.

“Do we have to tell mum?”

“We can find a way to tell her together.” He’d paused a moment. “We’d never stop her from finding out about the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad anyway.”

At fifteen Draco found Rose in the loo and sat on the floor, arranging himself as comfortably as he could on his side of the door before lifting knuckles gracefully to rap against the cedar.

“I’m not coming out.”

“I’m not asking you to.”

The comfortable and familiar silence climbed between them and cuddled before Rose was ready.

“They’re arguing again.”

“I know.”

“My parents need to grow up.”

“At least they both love you to pieces.”

A snicker of a knob before a sad blue eye peered out.

“Are you ready to talk to them? I’m here until you are.” And he waited for her. Patiently.

When Rose was nineteen, Draco brought her home from jail.

“I think you’ll find your mother sympathetic.”

Rose snorted and rolled her eyes.

“They love you.”

Rose didn’t respond and shifted her weight uneasily, staring up at a cottage where shadows played against the curtains and her parents waited for an explanation.

“Have I told you that they took turns breaking my nose at Hogwarts? They do agree on some things.”

A Little Drop of Poison

(The poem that I didn’t submit for Envy in Last Drabble Writer Standing, because I thought it would be too obvious who wrote it. But I like it.)

Envy.

Every time.

He felt it.

He fell in love.

As she tolerated his presence.

And he wished she’d favour him.

Then he begrudged any happiness she found.

And he instigated fights so they could talk.

When she walked away after their final, drawn-out fight.

When he screamed into the void where she used to be.

As she walked down the aisle towards Ronald Weasley.

Feeling spasms that turned his stomach inside out.

A twinge that sent his stomach spinning.

And he wished things were different.

As she loved her husband,

she lived and thrived

he felt it.

Every time.

Envious.
