The mithril shirt makes me so emotional. The way that Thorin gave it to Bilbo out of an act of love, even when he was deep in the gold sickness. It represented what they could have had. When Thorin and his nephews die, Bilbo leaves with the shirt, the only reminder he has of him. He then donates it to the Mathom-house, because he cannot bear to see it, again, a reminder of the terrible ending of his journey. When he departs from the shire, he brings with him the mithril shirt for his last adventure.
He never even knows how valuable the armour truly is, how it was worth. And the FACT that Gandalf never told him probably leans to the idea that it would only remind Bilbo of what happened on the adventure. (We see how Bilbo’s way of grief is denial, he never tells the true story, only child-versions of it so it doesn’t feel real). Many years later, he gives it to Frodo, in hopes it would protect him, in a way that it didn’t for him. Bilbo sent him off to a perilous journey and prayed that his wouldn’t end in tragedy like his.
But It saves Frodo’s life, and god the PARRELS of Thorin failing to save his nephews, but saved Bilbo’s nephew.  In the the Tower of Cirith Ungol, the mithril shirt causes the orcs to fight over it. Remember, it was borne out of an act love, and orcs hate everything about light, so it was almost like an act of vengeance that they only saw the value in the mithril, and not how Bilbo saw it (love) which causes them to kill each other. This allows Sam to save Frodo and THIS is the most emotional scene about the mithril shirt for me. Thorin and Bilbo’s story ended but it allows Sam and Frodo’s to continue.
The mouth of Sauron takes possession of it, and mocks the remaining fellowship. Imagine how Gandalf must have felt in that moment. He knew what it meant already. How he would have to tell Bilbo that the mithril shirt, the one that already invoked his mourning now held the only thing left of his beloved nephew, who he loved like a son. The regret he must feel, for the both of them. No wonder in his wrath, he retrieves the mithril shirt.
Of course, Frodo is alive and the chain mail is returned to his possession. By then the shirt has saved his life twice. I think that Bilbo’s thoughts on the shirt shifted, no longer a reminder of what he lost, but what has been saved. Now we dont know if it goes to Valinor with them, I’d like to think it did, but another idea is that Frodo gave it to Sam. It goes in full circle like Thorin giving it Bilbo then Frodo giving it to someone he loved.
it becomes a family heirloom and is passed down through the family, through the Gamgee’s descendants. A final act of love.
Maybe I look to much into things and this is just a string of ramblings. Maybe this was a pointless analysis with a clear bias to my favorite ships then an actual true interpretation to the text. Either way, the mithril shirt makes me feel a sense of loss, love and hope. There is something more then a piece of armour that saved the protagonist. One cannot deny how valuable it is to the story.

I‘m going to do a chapter by chapter analysis of LotR. It has been ages since I read Lord of the Rings and I’ve always wanted to force myself to read it slowly
Already took notes on the first chapter, so I hope I can start soon.

More Gondolin
I got on a roll thinking about Gondolin for @vidumavi, so here’s some more, specifically about the 12 houses of Gondolin.
The Houses somewhat correspond to areas of interest/responsibility, but it was a loose relationship, because whole families would join the same house, and it didn’t necessarily mean that everyone in that family shared an interest/aptitude in the House’s main function(s). And while children tended to remain in the same House as their parents once they grew up, their interests or talents might lay with another House’s areas. Two houses were added late, Mole and Wing, which allowed Turgon and Idril to both try to even out the numbers between some of the houses and attempt to re-align people with the House they would seem best fitted for.
The House of the King were the administrators and mediators, with Idril in the lead.  Aredhel and Irimë both belong to the House of the King, as does Idril until her marriage. (Once she married Tuor, she was known as the Princess of the Wing, but her duties continued unchanged.)  The smallest house, composed mainly of Turgon, his relatives, and their households/retainers.
The Heavenly Arch made all paints, dyes, etc used by the Gondolindrim, and also had the most experienced craftsmen in both weaving and decorative arts (painting, pottery, etc.) Had a few jewel-makers among them as well.
Tree handled anything related to wood, including carpentry and forestry.
Golden Flower dealt with plants, both decorative and edible. Large number of devotees of Yavanna in this house.
Fountain were responsible for the water system of the city, as well as the health of the streams and lakes in the valley. Worked closely with the Golden Flowers on irrigation and Tree, Pillar, and Tower on other uses. Had a fair number of both devotees of Ulmo and Falmari among them, and when Turgon begins sending out mariners, this is the house they’re drawn from.
Swallow were the messengers, as well as the house that took the lead in (highly limited) hunting, and archery- both training/practice and manufacture of arrows, as well as working with Tree on bows. As the messengers, they also ran the stables. Got stuck with taking care of poultry in addition to messenger birds because someone thought that made sense. (Until the House of the Wing was formed, at which point Duilin gleefully handed poultry off to them.)
Harp were the loremasters and musicians.
Pillar were the builders who look to the city walls, gates, etc as well as shoring up mines and tunnels. They work closely with Tower of Snow and the Hammer of Wrath.
Tower of Snow were the builders who dealt with buildings, both private and public.
Hammer of Wrath - smiths and miners, but also originally the best warriors. Responsible for military training of the other houses.
Mole - added when Maeglin came to the city. Originally intended to consolidate responsibility for livestock into one house (it had previously been a shared responsibility among several houses), but ended up with a good number of smiths and craftsmen due to Maeglin’s interests. Shared responsibility for the mines with Hammer. Third smallest house at the time of the Fall of Gondolin. (Took the mole as their sign because Maeglin is a sarcastic git and while trying to pick an animal for his house’s emblem, overheard Egalmoth suggest the mole to other lords as a joke because Maeglin had basically been hiding in his rooms since his parents’ deaths and always wore what were to the Gondolindrim dark, somber colors. He promptly decided his house were the Moles and their color was black. Egalmoth was highly irritated by this, because black was not the easiest color for dyers to work with. Maeglin chuckled to himself every time he ordered fabric for his house’s banners/formal clothing for the next hundred years.)
Wing - Added very late when Idril married Tuor. Only in existence for a bit more than 10 years. Picked less for their skills in other areas than for their abilities as warriors, because Turgon knew on some level that things were not going to end well and wanted Idril protected. Area of responsibility not clearly defined and a bit of a grab bag. Second smallest house in Gondolin at the time of the Fall.

I’ve no idea if you’ve answered this before, if so I’m very sorry. What are your Gondolin headcannons? I hope you get better soon.
Thank you!
Gondolin headcanons? I have many… I’ll put it behind a cut to spare everyone’s dash, because it ran long.

11 questions, thanks @filmamir
My questions (all Tolkien-based):
All-time problematic fave (if you have one):
Oh Feanor, definitely Feanor. You do so much shit and such crazy things and the first time reading I was, don’t do this this seems like a really bad idea. But anyone who shuts the door on Melkor like Feanor did has won me over.
Noldor, Vanyar, or Teleri?
Noldor, because the whole bunch of them is crazy. And I don’t really know anything about the Vanyar except they moved cities and were blond.
Favorite female character(s):
Haleth, Eowyn, Nerdanel, Luthien, Tar-Ancalime, is Ungoliath okay in this category? I think she is female
Favorite Vala®?
Ulmo he seems much more carefree and not so absent like the rest of the Valar.
What do you think happened to the two Blue Wizards?
I think they found some nice place to live and had a nice time.
Do you have any ocs? (If so, can you tell me about them? 😃)
Eh not really, he/she is just an idea. But I’ve this crazy idea of an Hobbit/Elf (more concretely Took/Noldor) character. No clear parentage or anything, but it would be hilarious. And I suppose I need to create a few OCs for the next Heraldic installment.
How do you feel about Tom Bombadil?
Okay this will sound really really crazy and it is total crack. But when I first read the chapter in the old Forrest and about Tom Bombadil I found everything really creepy. From Old Willow Man, to Tom ‘haha the ring has really no power about me’ Bombadil (that got even worse the further I got in LotR, and the burial side and everything. This feeling always remained. Then a few years later I read the Silmarillion and there was Melkor and he was banished into the Void, what even is the void? And can Tom go outside his domain???
If you were a Maia, which Vala would you want to be associated with?
Probably Ulmo, I mean I could be a mermaid, that’s really cool. And I would have the freedom of all the seas and rivers.
How do you feel about the Feanorians?
The whole family feels like an ancient Greek tragedy and I really love them. Without them the Silmarillion would be half as interesting (haha wouldn’t really exist) and I love that their echoes reach until the Ringquest be it the Ring itself, or the Palantiri. The family has many of my favorite characters and except for the Twins (really can’t get a read if them) have in my opinion quite different characters. It’s hilarious and infuriating that they are so good at the things they do, sadly often enough it is kinslaying or other rather serious things.
A favorite headcanon of yours (could be about a character, a pairing, anything):
LegolasxGimli forever. This is so great and so cute. I mean Legolas takes him with him to Valinor. And I’m normally not the greatest shipper
Thoughts on the new Amazon series:
I’m really looking forward to it, I can’t be more disappointed than I was with the Hobbit Trilogy (and I liked the first movie) so why should I worry when I haven’t seen it yet.
So here my 11 questions
1. Did you also find Tom Bombadil creepy?
2. How do you like Tolkien’s female characters?
3. Do you think the Doom of Mandos was more like a prophecy or more like a curse?
4. Favorite Character?
5. Do you have a favourite Age?
6. Most tragic character in your opinion?
7. Do you accept/like the concept of Death of the Author?
8. How do you think about things like LACE or Tolkien’s letters?
9. Which do you prefer? The Hobbit, LotR, or the Silmarillion?
10. How do you think about the reaction of the Valar after the Darkening if the Trees/Theft of the Silmarill/Death of Finwe?
11. Did you like the LotR and/or the Hobbit movies?
I don’t really know so many people here, so if anyone wants to do this, please don’t hesitate.

It’s great that I finally found the courage to post something in English, but why can’t I do the sensible thing and stick to one-shots?
I just startet writing the first chapter of a longer story in the KHR universe. I really should know better.

Heraldic Devices of the Eldar
I love heraldry, so I was pleasently surprised when I discovered, that the Professor himself created some heraldic devices (and of course heraldic rules) for his Silmarillion protagonists.
However, they make no sense to me. Status is indicated by the number of rays/points that meet the outer rim of the device.
Finwe as High King gets sixteen points, Elu Thingol gets only eight. So do we have heraldic devices of Noldorin Origin?
Fëanor, Fingolfin and Finarfin all get eight points. It could indicate their status as prince if the devices existed before Finwes death, their unwillingness to put themselves as high as their father, or it could be a political gesture in the inheritance conflict. So far so good, certeinly some questions but nothing illogical.
In comes Gondolin, we haven’t the device for Turgon, but we get Idrils. And she gets twelve points. More than Elu Thingol, or Fëanor. Which indicates that Turgon himself got even more points. Most likely sixteen like Finwe. Interestingly enough Gondolin has its own heraldic tradition for it’s houses, which differs greatly from typical Elven heraldry.
We don’t get heraldic devices for Fingon, Mardhros or Galadriel, so we can’t really compare. But my question remains, Idrils device has more points than any other. Save for Finwe (16) and Earendil (12). Luthien has two different devices and it is somewhat difficult to count the points, but I would guess four. Which makes sense considering her father got eight.
So do the devices originate from Gondolin?
Here’s a link to see some pictures of the devices

Partner and I have been rewatching The Two Towers for the first time in a long time.
anyway, one thing that has always been weird for me is Eomer giving Hasufel and Arod to random strangers, just like that.  Just giving them away, two horses, to a trio of foreign travelers he just met and had suspected of being spies.
like.  what?  This is Rohan.  Horses are the thing you value above all else, I don’t care if their riders are dead, even if their riders don’t have actual heirs somewhere to whom ownership would pass (or Rohirric inheritance law works differently and ownership has somehow defaulted to their éored’s commander, IDK), you’re still a calvary force planning to see a lot more battle in the near future, chances are high you’re going to end up with horseless riders who’ll need them.
this time I actually processed the fact, though, that Eomer believes they’ve inadvertantly killed two innocents, prisoners of the orcs, the beloved companions of these travelers.
The horses aren’t a gift.  They’re weregild.
