One of mine #scientific #illustration from a #paper published on #EpilepsyResearch in 2016 (doi: 10.1016/j.eplepsyres.2016.02.005.). This #simple and #schematic #figure shows a proposed #mechanism for CB-TRPV1 cross-talk in the #MDA. #Neurotransmitter (NT) release is modulated by #presynaptic CBr activation. The different #excitability levels of #DG #neurons could be influenced by: post-synaptic CBr eliciting #inhibitory pathways; #TRPV1, responsible for #cation currents; possible impairment of #CB #system on TRPV1 function. (A), (B), (C), (D): continue arrows indicate the #direct activation of receptors; the barred lines stand for #antagonism or #blockade of a process; dashed arrows show a modulatory action and spotted arrows of different thickness indicate TRPV1-cation currents of different #intensity. One of mine #scientific #illustration published on #Frontiers in #Aging #Neuroscience last year on my #review titled "Dissecting mechanisms of brain aging by studying the intrinsic excitability of neurons" (http://dx.doi.org/10.3389/fnagi.2014.00337). It highlights to date known #age-related #electrophysiological and #morphological changes in neurons. In this image i used a #lowpoly #style and #neuron has been depicted as a generic #myelinated #neuron for #simplicity, in order to summarize #information from different #animal models and neuronal cell type. (A) Age-related increase of #altered #neurotransmitter #receptors (gray) and decreased expression of normal ones (green). (B) Representative AP traces of #young and aged neuron. (C) Absence/disruption of #paranodal #ultrastructure (in red) leading K+ channels to be relocated adjacent to “Nav” clusters. (D) #Depletion of #myelin layers (in red) leading to an increase of the occurrence of #redundant myelin #sheaths exposing the enclosed #autodesk Alterations in Na+ and K+ channel properties or subtype expression patterns. Illustration was entirely created and rendered in @Autodesk 3Ds Max 2015. @low.poly @thebrainlab @neuroscienceofficial @anatomianatomy @medicaltalks

#Anencephaly is a #congenital #birth #defect consisting in the absence of a major portion of the #brain, #skull, and #scalp that occurs during #embryonic #development. It is a #cephalic #disorder resulting from a #neural #tube #defect that occurs when the rostral end of the neural tube fails to close. #Children born with this disorder usually only lack a #telencephalon, the largest part of the brain consisting mainly of the cerebral #hemispheres, including the #neocortex, which is responsable for high #cognitive functions. The remaining structure is usually covered only by a thin layer of #membrane— #skin, #bone, #meninges, etc. are all lacking. With very few exceptions, infants with this disorder do not survive longer than a few hours or possibly days after their birth. To date, no #3D high resolution #reconstruction of this kind is available. @3dtam and the Institute of Pathological-Anatomy at @unipait for the very first time pioneered a photogrammetric 3D scan of a 100 years old anencephalic #phoetus included in the collection of the Museum of Pathological-Anatomy of Palermo, Italy. The features of such kind of #specimen make this 3D scan really challenging and time consuming. And if fragility and size made the task difficult already, the wetness of the skin due to its liquid PFA storage, resulted in a nightmare light reflections and scattering other than being extremely unhealthy and dangerous. Acquisition has been made by means of a semi automatic system, consisting in an remote controlled rotating platform, 2 #Canon cameras and 2 flashes with softbox. 241 photos has been used for reconstruction and the whole workflow made by using a #HP envy laptop. Even if the result looks great much more can and will be done. Indeed, we will shortly repeat the task by using crosspolarizing technique which was impossible at that time and a fully automatic rig for the acquisition. Actually, we hope that the use of crosspolarizing technique could improve texture and geometry reconstruction, minimizing ( or better removing) further post-processing work. #3D #printing is not a #game, and even less if you deal with #hard #metal 3Dprint such as #stainless #steel…refining is a #nightmare made of #dangerous #tools and #reagents. Here on the top you can see a 3D print of a #lowpoly #skull made with #AutodeskMemento right as it came from #shapeways, on the bottom after 2 hours of refining work.

Eventhough, most of the #people will think #3D #scanning a #stone would not be such an #interesting #thing and it does not have anything to do with #medical #topics, in this #particular #case they would be #totally #wrong. Why? Because, what you are currently looking at is a very special kind of stone, namely a #Bladder #Stone. A Bladder Stone, also named Vescical Stone or in this case Urolith, is a common occurrence in animals, and it forms, in most of the case, by #over #saturation of urine with #crystals, eventually resulting in a stone #formation. The stone forms around a #nidus, which can consist of #white #blood #cells, #bacteria and #organic #matrix mixed with crystals (the whitish parts) or crystals alone. Noteworhty, this particular specimen, belonging to the collection of the Museum of #Pathological #Anatomy at @unipait reaches a #volume #size of roughly 0.5 m3 and a weight of approximately 1Kg! Shocked? This is not even the biggest Bladder Stone stored in the museum, so stay tuned for more! @memento @autodesk @autodesk_me @tatjanadzambazova @3d.s.max (at Palermo, Italy)

#Acromegaly (/ˌækrɵˈmɛɡəli/; from Ancient Greek άκρος akros "extreme" or "extremities" and μεγάλος megalos "large") is an #extremely #rare #syndrome resulting from anterior pituitary gland's growth hormone (GH) over production after epiphyseal plate closure at puberty. A number of disorders may increase the pituitary's GH output, although most commonly it involves a #tumor called pituitary adenoma, derived from a distinct type of cell (somatotrophs). Acromegaly most commonly affects adults in middle age,[1] and can result in #severe #disfigurement and #fatal complications if unchecked. Because of its #pathogenesis and slow progression, it is hard to #diagnose in the early stages and is frequently missed for years until changes in external features, especially of the #face, become noticeable. Nowadays, It is as rare as 5 cases /million /year. Early treatments and #surgical procedures can stop #bone growing decreasing the probability to see a patient with clear features of #illness and hence rare #specimens such as the one in picture. The #museum of Pathological-Anatomy at #UNIPA is one of the few places in the world owning a complete acromegalic #skeleton dated 1859. While working to reopen the museum to public, we are glad to give you the chance to see the first #stereophotogrammetry #3D #reconstruction of an acromegalic #skull, so accurate you can actually appreciate #osteoporotic #fracture and #neoplastic #jaw bone #regrowth with a #detail resolution up to 500 microns. #AutodeskMemento provides an end-to-end solution for converting any #captured #reality input (photos or scans) into high definition #3D meshes that can be cleaned up, edited and optimized for the #Web, #mobile or 3D #printing / #fabbing. Having a single platform able to perform all this makes Reality Computing scalable and accessible to a variety of users without requiring expertise and use of multiple and expensive solutions. Here on the bottom, it is shown a full length project, from #digitization (2nd, 3rd quadrant) to final 3D print (4th quadrant), aimed to obtain a highly accurate replica of a real #Human #Lumbar #Vertebra (1st quadrant). Noteworthy, for the whole workflow only Autodesk Memento software was used. #Stratasys #Object30 and #AutodeskEmber were used to obtain those stunning #high-res #replicas you can appreciate in the picture. Only #imagination can be the limit for such powerful tool, personally I see a #limitless #educational potential. When I was a kid, I used to #daydream classes where students could actually see and touch in real #life whatever they were studying. Now, thanks to Autodesk Memento that #sci-fi #dream made of holograms and 3D printed objects is just few clicks away! I really want to thank a lot #TatjanaDzambazova for 3D printing our 3D #reconstruction of the vertebra, showing once more her support to our project! (at Palermo, Italy)
