"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.

It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).

Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.

One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.

as we watch the rabid violence and hatred toward students protesting on college campuses for palestine, a friendly reminder that during the anti-war student movement during the vietnam era:

7 in 10 Americans thought the country "would be better off if there were less protest and dissatisfaction coming from college campuses."

A Gallup poll following the Kent State shootings found 58% of Americans blamed the students for their own deaths

just as a glaring reminder that the reactions we're seeing to these protests are typically american (and essentially from the mouth of richard nixon), and have not changed or progressed at all in the last ~50 years

this applies to real life too but you as a white (for a given definition of white) fan need to be willing to put in the effort to curtail not only your own racism but to a lesser extent the racism of others

fans of color have been doing this for years and it's an extra effort they have to put in just to participate in fandom, that's on top of the extra effort real life racism takes on a person

the bar for entry is not the same height for everyone

I will always advocate for every queer person's right to be a fully autonomous sexual being-and that always must and always will include asexuals. Recognizing the significance of queer sex should not mean that every queer person should be mandated to meet an arbitrary sexual prerequisite in order for their queerness to be affirmed. Centering queerness around sex leaves very little room for queer folks for whom sex is insignificant, or for whom sex is never or rarely possible, or for queer folks who have never had sex before, or for queer folks whose only sexual experiences have been violent. unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.
