Behold, The Man.
It's been a while. I hope everyone has been doing well. I haven't.
I've been balancing school and applications for college, so I haven't been posting let alone reading... I've been painting and writing a lot too, so be on the lookout for that.
We're going to start reading again! So excited!

Another week I probably won't survive and the author who will get me through it.
I've been revisiting the work of Dostoevsky! It's been especially fun after reading a few biographies and bibliographies on him; I love these little things about reading!
Another book I'd like to recommend (not pictured) is The Sinner and The Saint by Kevin Birmingham! Wonderful biography and account of the murder that inspired Crime and Punishment.
Hope everyone has been doing well! Senior year of high school certainly hasn't been kind to me, but we can handle that.

The Flowers of Evil is one of my favorite collections of poetry! Whenever I don't feel like reading or doing anything else, I always come back to this book!
My favorite thing about this copy is that I can read both the original French text and English translation side by side without the need to buy two copies!
I bought Illuminations by Arthur Rimbaud while I was in France and I need to get to reading it soon. I go into my senior year tomorrow and I hope I can still find the time to read and write.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
I've been spending a few days in Grasse now, where the events of the novel take place. There's even a theater that is performing a play based on the book. I recommend this book to everyone! I think being in Grasse has really heightened the quality of my reading because I am *here* in Grasse, learning about all the ways that perfume is produced and the history behind it!
As someone who has a very sensitive sense of smell, Grasse has been an interesting place. There are so many different smells and tastes that come out of this small city, I can't help but let my mind wander just a little.
I took a perfuming workshop at one of the Fragonard stores here and it was a fun experience! I got to see an organ and make my own perfume!
I hope everyone has been doing well! Stay safe and healthy during the summer months!

I love creating my characters and then throwing them in completely different universes everyday.
Oh, they were just at a shop together? Well I hope they have fun with the vampires, who knows maybe tomorrow they’ll be magic

It's been a while, here's what I've been up to:
So, two words, college applications. I've been preparing for applications next semester, which means I have to take allll my APs and other things, as well as prepare for my school play. I know I should be managing my time better, but hey, it is what it is.
They dropped a new Dazai translation to the set and I couldn't resist buying it. Very very excited to start it, I'll try to finish and give a review by the end of this week! The translator isn't Keene, but I have my expectations hehe
The Dazai Set is now complete??? I don't know if New Directions will add more, but if there are others to collect, just know I will have already bought them haha
Hope all of you have been doing well!

It's been a while. I ended up getting sick during the Lunar New Year and had been lying in bed all day haha
I don't know when I'll be starting my next book, but I'll be rereading a very interesting book after this one! It's by a Japanese author, so I think you might know!
I bought this collection of Kafka's letters to Felice back in October for the humble price of 10000 krw or (8.13 usd) and had never got around to reading it. Currently, it's very heartwarming and "real". I put this in quotation marks because it's not something I can describe.
It's been depressing over the past few weeks, my favorite teacher passed away and I haven't really gotten over it yet, but things take time, so I'm just watching the wounds heal. Hope everyone has been doing well :)

And as the 2022 reading season comes to an end, we've chosen four books to represent my year in books.
Spring goes to Fyodor Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov! An amazing, invigorating book, I could go on for hours and hours on the writing, the characters, the plot, everything! I have a soft spot in my heart for Ivan and Lise (separately), oh and Alyosha's development in the story??? It was an added bonus to the genius of the story!
Summer/Fall goes to Fernando Pessoa's Book of Disquiet and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera! Also wonderfully written books, the former is a diary of introspective musings on life, which I am very sure many of us relate to haha
Gabo's masterpiece is a reflection of married life and youthful romance, showing the good, the bad, and the ugly parts that come with love. You can't help but read the book in one sitting and then cry over the ending sentence.
Winter goes to Patrick Suskind's Perfume: The Story of a Murderer! Now, I learned about this book from my father back when I was 14, but had vaguely remembered it. That was until I came across the book at a bookstore and it instantly clicked. I had read a pdf file because 15 year old me had no money, but I bought a copy secondhand a couple of weeks ago! And wow, this book??? Jaw-dropping. As someone with a very sensitive nose and gives extreme attention to detail, I appreciated the descriptions and language used in the book, almost to the point it actually scared me how accurate everything smelled! This is an experience, not just a book!
I hope the 2023 reading season brings more interesting reads (and rereads) as well as great blessings and health to all! Happy New Year everyone!

And we have started our last book of the year. Susan Sontag's On Photography is a collection of essays on the subject of photography and its moral/ethical issues.
I now have so much time on my hands, it's overwhelming. There are so many things I'd like to do, but I don't know where to start!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone, may you have the best holiday and enjoy time with your loved ones 🤍
