Marry My Husband: Review Ep 9 - Ep 16 (spoilers under the cut)
Sooo I might have binged the entire half of the series in one night lololol. In my defence, it was sooo good that i absolutely couldn't leave it in between.
After an intense previous eps, eps 9-12 were even more intense. I loved how Su-min began to show her crazy side gradually, and how Ji-won acted like a total queen in the face of that crazy. Also, Ji-won dumping Min-hwan both metaphorically and literally was such a satisfactory moment *chefs kiss*.
But ngl the pregnancy twist by Su-min was genius, and totally worked out in Ji-won's favor. My favourite part was when her ex friends stormed the wedding to take revenge on Ji-won's behalf lmao.
Altho initially I felt that introducing Ji-hyuk's ex-fiancée Oh Yu-ra was a unnecessary move but as the eps progressed, the vision became sooo much clearer. If anything, BoA's character spiced up the show even more.
However I do wish we could've seen more of the potential side couples, the ending made it all worth <3
Over all a 8.5/10 show

My 'Destined With You' Prediction/Theory
I posted this on MyDramaList and Reddit. Let's me share my theory here as well.
Ya'll I think there's more to the story than we think. Right now it's confusing because we're just seeing and being shown the surface. The show is definitely holding back some details and information on purpose. But I'm pretty sure we'll be diving in deeper next week once the past life's story is introduced and we'll be able to see the mystery being revealed layer by layer. Now that we know the existence of the 'black magic/curse' book, i have a feeling that there's another copy of it out there and someone is holding on to it and using it (the voodoo which Shin Yu and Hong Jo discovered) and its someone who knows the existence and location of the shrine. Apparently that voodoo was used to cut off the ties between two people (which in this case is Hong Jo and Shin Yu). I read this in a Korean community post. I just think there's a reason why Shin Yu seems almost stupidly loyal to Na Yeon. It just doesn't feel right. He doesn't seem to be emotionally in love with her but yet he's being stupidly loyal to her for no reason. Despite being told multiple times that what he's doing is wrong, he always seem to disregard it (as if breaking up is never an option he could consider). Almost feels like there's a unexplainable force that's constantly holding him back when it comes to Na Yeon. He seem to always put her up on this weird pedestal. Him believing that she doesn't have any faults even when its being presented that she's somehow involved in Hong Jo being transferred  (+ even when Hong Jo specifically said that Na Yeon slapped her, he completely dismissed it), finding her to be matchless/incomparable to other women even when he's obviously attracted to another and pushing the attention he received from others whenever they're together towards her to boost up her ego even when the attention was obviously on him and not her. He acts really differently when it comes to her too. He just doesn't act like his usual self, he acts weak when he's with her. Kinda like a puppet. & he was acting this way even before the whole 'love potion' confusion. Also the whole voodoo thing happened after Hong Jo met Na Yeon to tell her everything (about the use of spell) . BUT SUSPICIOUSLY, we didn't get to see her reaction... Now that feels rather on purpose. Why would they leave that out? Hmm. Now I'm really suspicious. What if Na Yeon is the one with a copy? Maybe her family is involved with shamans too. & she used one of the spells to 'seduce' Shin Yu two years ago. Its weird because he just seems so uninterested but felt compelled to tolerate her for some reason. He wanted to break up but couldn't even be firm about it. It just feel weird to me because that's not how he is to everyone else. He's only like that towards her. I feel like it could be an outcome of black magic being used on him. Apparently, from the historical records which we saw Shin Yu googling from the earlier episodes, there a 'Lady Yoon' mentioned that was involved with the death of Aeng Cho(which I believe is Hong Jo's past life). If Na Yeon is not the reincarnation of Lady Yoon then she is most definitely a descendent which would explain how she possibly would have a copy of the black magic book. The question is if it's Na Yeon, how is she able to obtain Hong Jo's PJs? I think the stalker is definitely working for Na Yeon and the stalker is the one that stole Hong Jo's pjs. She may lie that she received the photos from an unknown number but the stalker definitely knows her well enough to be able to, firstly, recognize Shin Yu as her boyfriend, and secondly, knows her phone number in order to send her those photos. Also I'm pretty sure she would know where the Jang family shrine is since she's been with him for 2 years and hangs out with his family. This is just a theory so just take it with a grain of salt.
In my opinion, this theory will also help to make Shin Yu more redeemable. Because as of now, his character is a red flag but notice how he's only becomes a red flag when it involves Na Yeon? What if he was blindsided by black magic and the root cause of it has been Na Yeon all along?

Marry My Husband (2024)
Tumblr media
This show is not perfect, and it is certainly not Perfect Marriage Revenge, but it does have its charms.
What Worked
Like that other show about a time traveling wife who was betrayed by her family and goes back in time to get her revenge, this show was good because of its villains. Song Ha-yoon who plays the evil best friend Jung Soo-min was the most fun to watch of the baddies. She was believably bad while pretending to be nice, and watching her spiral out of control over the course of the series was a treat.
The show also made the most of its side characters, giving them interesting plots and bringing in a solid cast. I especially loved watching young actor Choi Gyu-ri bring this delightful manic energy to Yoo Hui-yeon (the younger sister / bestie). I could have used more scenes with her, and hopefully she'll break into a lead role in a future series.
What DIdn't Work
Though it had a solid final two episodes, the show sagged a bit in the last third. They brought in an evil-ex fiance character that just wasn't interesting to watch.
Also, there were a few moments where the show went from "Over the Top" to "Completely Unbelievable". Like the end of episode 13 (aka the "slowest truck of doom ever") and the end of episode 14 (aka "WTF Ji-won, don't just stand there, Kick him in the nuts, FFS!").
The Performances
Park Min-Young as ("Time Traveling Wife") Kang Ji-won. I've been kind of disappointed in PMY's choices lately, so it was nice to see her in a somewhat better role. There were moments when I felt pathos, or enjoyed the romance, but not that many. Mostly, it was the moments in the show where she got to be angry—and even a little ruthless—that I remember. Which is part of the appeal for any good revenge show.
Na In-woo as ("Future CEO") Yoo Ji-hyuk. I think he was a little wooden in this, but alot of that was the writing. The show was really focused on the FL and on her relationships, and it didn't have much space for him. I didn't really mind that, but it did make those few moments where he got to cut loose a little (like the ice cream scene) more memorable.
Lee Yi-kyung as ("The terrible ex-") Park Min-hwan. This guy was great at playing a mediocre man completely out of his depth. He was like one of those clown punching bags that just pop right up after you hit them. And it was fun watching him get beaten down and come right back up for more.
Song Ha-yoon as ("The evil bestie") Jung Soo-min. I liked watching her slowly get more evil and more crazy as the show went on. The actor did a great job making her contemptible, while pretending to be kind and thoughtful.
Lee Ji-kwang as ("The chef") Baek Eun-ho. Probably the most sympathetic character in the show. He just wants to run his restaurant and feed all his friends and get a cute girlfriend and all of these crazy people keep coming in and messing with things. Would have liked to see more of him, and his loveline, but what we got was nice.
Choi Gyu-ri as ("The Best Sister in the World") Yoo Hui-yeon. This actor had golden retriever energy and it was so much fun watching her in the middle of this craziness. I want to see an entire show with her just running around living her best life. We needed more of Hui-yeon and chef's story than we got, for sure.
Gong Min-jeung as ("Sad boss") Assistant Manager Yang. I've seen this actor a few times and I always enjoy her, though they rarely give her a good loveline. She got a pretty decent one here, despite all the other crazy stuff that happened, so that was nice. Again, could have used a few more scenes with her and Lee Seok-joon.
Ha Do-kwon as ("The Salaryman") Lawyer Lee Seok-joon. He did a good job bringing some gravity to this crazy show. Was able to be funny too (in a Butler Jeeves kind of way). Not enough time spent on him and Manager Yang's story, but what we got was good.
BoA as ("The Evil Ex-") Oh Yu-ra. This character felt more like a plot device than anything. There were a few moments where she could have felt menacing or crazy, but I don't think the actor was quite up to it. They needed to cast a real Mean Girl, but they didn't have enough story for that kind of character.
Ha Do-kwon as ("Bad Manager") Lee Seok-joon. They brought in a really good character actor and this guy made the most of the part. He felt like someone I could have met in real life, and I despised him. Which means the actor did a great job.
Everyone Else. The high school bully girls were fun to watch. Yang's husband did an okay job being despicable. The judo teammates were funny. Even the grandfather had a couple of good moments. Show did a good job taking care of its minor characters.
TL; DR:
If you liked Perfect Marriage Revenge, you'll probably like this too (and vice-versa). It's different enough that you don't feel like you're watching the same show twice. It's also not quite as good as that other show, which means people likely judged it a little harder than they otherwise might have done.

i hope the writers have crafted an introduction of hong-jo to shin-yu's parents. the strategic timing of this revelation is crucial, given the meticulous construction of characters that has already significantly influenced shin-yu's love life.
the audience has been given a glimpse into shin-yu's past, where his father is playing a dominant role in pushing for his marriage to na-yeon, leaving shin-yu excluded from decision-making processes.
the writers have masterfully laid the groundwork for a dynamic exploration of how shin-yu's current romantic involvement with hong-jo will be perceived by his parents. the contrasting emotional dynamics, marked by the forceful imposition of decisions in the past, set the stage for potential clashes with established authority and expectations.
it's crucial to clarify that the anticipation surrounding hong-jo's introduction to shin-yu's parents doesn't necessarily predict a clash in the traditional sense. rather, the interest lies in how the writers will, if they do, skillfully navigate this significant moment in shin-yu's evolving character arc.
as we witness more layers of shin-yu and hong-jo's relationship unfold, the recent episodes have yet to showcase shin-yu's parents. the intrigue stems from a desire to see how the writers will bring them into the storyline and how shin-yu's emotional autonomy will be portrayed in the face of familial expectations.
this is an opportunity for nuanced storytelling, presenting a chance to explore how shin-yu, as a character, will transcend from the established norms set by his family. it's not merely a clash of personalities but an examination of shin-yu's growth and his ability to make decisions independent of familial pressures.

Easy Fixes to make Na-yeon a Sensible Character:
Na-yeon was Ancient Shin-yu's wife, whom he married right after Aeng-cho pretended not to love him (because politics and father). He had one or two kids before he met Aeng-cho again and cursed himself. Na-yeon remembers her past life, so she hates Hong-jo and wants to marry Shin-yu to make it right in this life. This also has the benefit of explaining why/how a cursed guy had kids, which was never addressed.
Na-yeon and Shin-yu were set up by their parents, which for their income level seems like normal enough practice. Shin-yu's dad wants him married so he can have a cursed son before he dies (yay...) and Mr. Mayor needs the political support. Instead of Na-yeon using her father to try and get back together with Shin-yu, he is using her because he needs the money or whatever.
The first one fits right into the plot and would just make so much sense! Also, Eun-wol said that more people remember their past lives than you think, which seemed to be a huge hint that at least one of the bad guys would remember too, but it never paid off. It would tie so many lose threads!

the contrast between shin yu with hong jo (soft, touchy, goofy) and shin yu with na yeon (cold, emotionless, pushing her away when she touches him) like idk if it really is a curse keeping him with her but tbh i don't really care anymore i need that relationship to end like yesterday

okay so Na Yeon used love potion on Shin Yu, however, Hong Jo's love potion that he drank neutralized it and thus we say that spells work and his feelings for Hong Jo are very real indeed

What's in a name?
Tumblr media
Inspired by the great skit "having a non-white name" by ProZD. Well at least 'Yeon-ha' and 'Yonah' kinda sounds close enough I guess...
Also a random fact about Yonah's name:
Once upon a time, Yonah used to be a "Yuu" too 😂
Her name used to be '윤아 Yoon-a' (reads as 유나 Yuna, or Yuuna if you will *wink**wink*), but after I realized that NRC was an all-boys school, and decided to go with a more androgynous look for my MC/Yuu to blend in better, I changed her name for a more gender-neutral name as well.
유나 Yu(u)na to 요나 Yona(h)!
Because "ㅛ" has the upside down shape of "ㅠ"! And I threw in a random "h" at the end so it looks more... fitting with setting? Idk, also it's a slight reference to Jonah from the Bible.
(For more fancomics, see masterlist)
