aprilis thinking she isn't good enough for you
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: aprilis x gn!reader
tags: angst, mention of yufa & krysha
Tumblr media
sometimes aprilis thinks she isn't good enough for you
when she sees you talking to yufa or krysha, she wonders if you would be better off dating them
those two are kind and gentle. they have no trouble expressing their emotions
she wonders if you would be happier with someone who isn't afraid to tell you that they love you
someone who buys you flowers. someone who's sensitive. someone who smiles more. someone who isn't such a cursed being. someone who isn't her...
aprilis always acts so cold, keeping a distance between her and the other monstrums
but deep down, she longs to be near you, yet fears that what she has to offer isn't good enough for you
aprilis wants you to be happy!
but if she can't make you happy, maybe you would be better off without her…

Adol Christin (Ys series): Adol is a guy obsessed with adventure and an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the wrong time. The Ys series follows his chronicles throughout the various lands of Fantasy Europe, as Adol fights gods, makes friends, and attempts to satisfy his endless wanderlust.
Why I like this dude: Insane little bumper car of a man. Don't let his silent protagonist tendencies fool you; this man is insane. Just a pure adrenaline junkie. Also vehemently aro. To me. He could never get a girlfriend (or a boyfriend, if Ys9 is anything to go by), because Adventure Comes First. His bff dogi has just learned to accept this. The way he just Lights Up at any hint of excitement in Ys9 is just adorable, man. Ignore how often I've reblogged art of him in a maid outfit.

Kanata Kanbara (Disciple of the Lich: Or How I Was Cursed by the Gods and Dropped Into the Abyss): Kanata has been chosen by the gods to be isekai'd. When he implies he'd rather continue on Earth with his cat, though, the gods retaliate by dropping him into Cocytus, the deepest and most dangerous dungeon of all, in order to turn his demise into a quick horror flick. He survives only through the help of the Lich Lunaere, who has no ulterior motives in training him beyond belief and just wants him to be prepared for how much more dangerous the outside world is than the abyss. yeah.
Why I like this dude: LNs can have a problem where they "run out of premise." When Kanata escapes the abyss halfway through volume 1, i was afraid. i was then incredibly delighted when it turns out Lunaere's training broke his damn brain. He's constantly afraid of something dangerous popping up because Lunaere trained him in the Demon Hell Dimension, and through sheer happenstance (i.e: the gods trying to kill him for his impudence), his fear keeps getting validated. He aquires both a student who he immediatly inflicts his new Lunaere-isms on (she is a normal person and terrified to leave), as well as a god-like homonculus daughter he has to be responsible for. It's fucking great. A polite young man who has undoubtedly broken under his circumstances but soldiers on anyway.

I cannot believe I picked up a het ship from this YS game. Het ships are usually so bland and boring I can't stand them. But to be fair it's just Ike/Soren taken to exciting new heights. Like what if Elincia was evil and burned Ike at the stake after the war and Soren went "oh hell naw" and proceeded to pick up alchemy and act out a real-life fix-it fic straight out of the Elrics' dreams.

see the thing with ys ix. is that its politics and city fucking suck. everything any protagonist says about the romun empire or the bells of freedom or the pendleton company or the chatelard is so completely and utterly wrong and i’m opposed to having to play such a moderate, both-sides-ism story.
but the OTHER thing with ys ix is that it has some of the most fascinating characters that are fun to play and refreshing takes on what their original archetypes seem to be. everything involving the monstrums and the grimwald nox and the crimson king and hawk and anemona and aprilis and the adol+marius situation is captivating and inspiring.
like how can a game that has the hawk scene and the marius scene and the god damn crimson king scene manage to be so unbearable with 1/3 of its story. this game expects you to side with the god damn roman empire and oppose the people of an occupied region that are fighting for their right to self-govern. it wants you to sympathize with a prison warden over a freedom fighter. i had to fucking skip the bells of freedom scenes because its so badly written!
and yet! this game has the “i cant risk losing you again” scene. the “i wish i could go with you, but i’m afraid im running out of time” scene. the “no matter what comes to pass, just be sure to come home” scene. the “can i say one more thing before i go?” scene. how can i disregard how many parts of this game touched me so deeply? how can a game be so spineless yet so heartfelt?

Why Aprilis has a Raven Wing (Ys IX Major Spoilers)
I think that the reason Aprilis has a raven wing is due to how, in Norse mythos, Odin (Grimnir=Odin) had two ravens that were his messengers: Hugin and Munin; ergo Aprilis, having stated she became Grimnir's representative warrior, is a messenger to the King of Nors Gods.
Aprilis’ afinity 3/3 has her talking that when she nearly died saving a drowning child she met the King of Gods, Grimnir (Odin in Norse, who at times was also called Grimnír), whom then made her, as a pact to save her life, his champion to fight his brother, Luki (Loki in Norse).
Now in Norse mythos Odin has two messenger ravens--Hugin and Munin--and Aprilis sees herself as someone whom answered to Grimnir's call during the war and even after.
Since Grimnir isn't here she carries his legacy as the one to fight the Noxs--the messenger may not pass the information back to him, but she carries his message/passes onto others while still always being the messenger.
Her role as the 'shadow of Glia/silent guardian', where we, outside the Nox, always see her in high places, usually where birds would flock, is like a raven that flies over and watches the land.
