Okay so more info on the Vinsmoke Sentai theme. It will be similar to Ohsama Sentai King Ohger. I am yet to come up with a Sentai team name for them but they will not call themselves that name till later.
So the five kingdoms that the Vinsmoke kids will later rule were once part of the Germa Empire. Judge stole those territories from Avalon and annexed them to his Kingdom.
Sora wants them back and the only way to get that is via her kids and herself fighting together. Sora herself has Ranger powers. So the other Vinsmoke kids are critically injured and Sanji is thankfully alive but still emotionally traumatised.
Like I mentioned in a previous post, Sora reaches out to Sanji after Avalon gets attacked by the Germa army and Judge, forcing the Strawhats to rush to her aid. Sora transforms for the first time that day. The other Vinsmoke kids awaken and together alongside Sanji transform for the first time together.
Their Ranger suits are different from the Raid Suits in the sense that they actually wear helmets whereas the raid suits show their faces but they all wear glasses plus their new Ranger abilities are their way of disowning the Vinsmoke ideology.
Just like the King Ohgers, they use swords to transform. Their henshin phrase is the same as used in that show: Ohgai Busou (Royal Arms)
Ranger colours:
Sora: White
Sanji: Red
Ichiji: Black
Reiju: Pink
Niji: Blue
Yonji: Green
Their motif is Animals because the island kingdoms are governed by animal beast spirits which are the zords they pilot into battle
Sora: Swan
Sanji: Lion
Ichiji: Wolf
Reiju: Falcon
Niji: Shark
Yonji: Bear
There is one extra sword and that one is given to Zoro once he and Sanji get married. Zoro’s animal is a Tiger which makes sense given his personality and the fact that he is Sanji’s Royal consort.
- Sanji wears the most revealing outfits of the bunch due to him now accepting and embracing his sexuality
- Of all the boys, Ichiji is the quiet one whilst Yonji is the loud one
- Niji and Sanji bicker a lot because Niji annoys him at times and Niji annoys Sanji out of love. He wants to get to know his little brother a lot better
-Sanji is the leader instead of Ichiji or Reiju though Ichiji is second in command and takes the lead when Sanji is not there
-Ichiji was the one who suggested that Sanji take over as the leader as a way of making it up to him for his past bullying and also because he trusts him
-Zoro's ranger colour in the future is silver
-Nami becomes the gold ranger later on and her animal is the cat
-Sora always smiles whenever she sees her kids together even though the boys tend to bicker a lot
-Judge fears Sanji the most because unlike before, Sanji now will not hesitate to kill him. Sanji terrifies everyone due to his temper and crazy antics

23/7 Kingohger Summer Stage REPO
programme:
11:00 Hero show
11:30 Cast Talk
11:40 Waking the King + OP live
~shake hands with heroes for purchase >2000~
Full cast.
I got here at 10:40am so the queue was already rather long. the paying tickes is numbered up to 1000 but you can watch the event for free as well since it's outdoors. Naturally I was standing further back (even though I didn't queue up yesterday.) Kinda feels like there's more people? but that'd be weird because there were geats-only fans yesterday too. maybe it's the sunday.
Hero show
part 1:
So the first part is Hero Show, but it's more just an interactive session. Act 1 has Red Yellow Blue fighting two foot soliders. Gira got a solo fight and then it's the Yan Hime combo fight. Shipper lens ON. Himeno did a cart wheel holding onto Yanma and Yanma princess carried Himeno for a spin attack while she ojousana-laugh! Yanma complimented on Himeno ("Yarujanika" "arigatou")
part 2:
Then the MOTW aka Bug Host shows up and makes small talk with the audience. He's a lot of fun, questioned if we really like Kingohgers so much and hate the Bugnaroks so bad, then asks again and says bugnarok fans can get presents. He also keeps reminding the crowd to beware of heat stroke and drink water. Even commented that "looks like there're a lot of idling adults at the back" haha.
A boy and a girl, both 4 years old are invtied to play musical chair on stage. The girl cried at the first round when the foot soldier took her seat. So the host pulled the boy aside and give him the "men should be kind to girls talk" while the foot soldier plays peekaboo to cheer her up. But they both sat on the seat in second round anyway. However the gift bag they won is 01 and Kiramei cutlery and stationery 😂 According to host, those are for "leftover stock for adult reasons"
Part 3:
Dango Mushi Jim is the MOTW.
the whole team appears on the stage and did the Kingohger Spell from ep10. Maybe it's just that line but Himeno's audio here sounds like it's cut from the ep. Rita also did the "taskforce" speech so it connects to Gira calling "Ohsama Sentai" and the others responding "Kingohger". Kaguragi gets a solo fight with his ep4 speech.
What I love about Papillon's suit action is they can't always wait for the enemy to come at them in order to fit the "immovable" image. they don't rotate in himeno's sense but they rotate to always face the enemy (himeno's earth versus rita's moon if you will) and always keeps the enemy at sword's length. Both today and G-Rosso's Rita-sama is good at fighting with just one hand and they'd put their other hand holding the cape at the back of their waist and that is so good. love that move where they hit the MOTW in the face with the pommel of the sword.
Blue and Yellow reappears and THE FIRST THING, Himeno runs to ask if Rita is ok. <3 They brought Rita offstage so it's Gira's solo.
the team gathers again and INFERNO plays. Gira ask everyone to do the finisher together but Yanma kicks him. Then they do the finisher together.
OP DANCE!
This Yanma is the tallest and has the most movement during the dance. Rita's steps the bottom limit of what is consider a step and their legs would not move fro the arm shakes.
Gira in suit is so cute he saw a kid dressed as Gira and excitedly waved and pointed to himself with Rita. who simply nodded. this went on three times.
Rita's wave is your old-man-government-leader wave. 90 degrees elbows/shoulder, palm 90 degrees turn between facing themself and their left.
Cast Talk
matsumoto hiroya hosting.
to be called "Sukapon Tanuki" to my face... shiawase!
声小さい! *crowd cheers* *Yanma turns his back to the crowd but gives thumbs up high in the air*
Kaku introduced himself in Jeramie's voice "Kaguragi Dybowski, lordly king of this country Toufu... tosa."
Jeramie has to repeat now (name/a storytellier behind the times tosa.) so he follows up with the opening narration, than Kagu immediately interrupts him with a "too long!" to which Masahi: "Otto"
Part 1: Movie
Q1: memories about filming
Gira: performing with Sakurai-san (Debonica). the cast knew her from reputation and especially Himeno is jealous-in-a-good-sense about Taisei getting to work with her a lot.
Q2: with Hinagata Akiko (Iroki)
Kaku: (pretty much the same answer as yesterday) She is an approchable person so it seems she's quite different from the character setting before filming starts, but once on the job, there's an evil ruler aura about her.
Q3: RBP with Nakamura Shido (Rainoir)
Taisei said "Aoto and Yuzuyan"
something about his professionalism
one thing that made Aoto very happy is Nakamura's son's fave is Tonbo Ohger.
Erica was great at fanservice! She's always looking off stage and waved and made finger hearts at the crowd. I think as a model she's just really good at locating where the camera is.
Erica spoke of the assets and CG specifically made for the movie that impressed her, then asked the audience to raise their hands if they'll see it in theaters. She interacted with the audience like this again towards the end.
Yuzuki talked about seeing a new side of Rita again (pretty much same as bandai ad). It was fresh for her to film something different than TV's Rita. (I wonder if one'd use 'fresh' to describe it if they're just being their usual self but in front of the camera?)
Yuzuki is not very good at answering questions on the spot so sometimes either she says a lot of filler words or her greeting and answers to promotional questions that have been asked a thousand times sound rehearsed.
Yzy and So are truly close friends. they'd chat off-mic and at one point So pointed at Rita fans in the crowd for Yuzuki.
Part 2: Questions from cast members
Q1: "これからも一緒に頑張ろう 碧斗❤" (Let's keep on working hard together. from Aoto❤) Host reads out the heart too.
Kagu tsukkomi said hey that's not a question, let's hear some questions
Q2: To Kaguragi, why muscles? from Jeramie.
Masahi: 気になる I really want to know that
So: (Jeramie voice) Do you want to come to the world of muscles too? Muscles are good for you ;D 筋肉はいいよ
Q3: みんなへ 好きな季節は? りたっち To everyone, what is your favourite season? Rittachi
(Yuzuki's last ig/cl live mentioned nicknames people called her. Yuzuchi was on the list but at the very last because only close friends from home would call her that. new people she met after entering the proffesion don't usually use it. those that called her Yuzuchi called her that day one they met. IIRC)
So: Summer. Though it's hot, what a nice time to hear sounds of life like cicada.
Host: suddenly became a serious/adult-like conversation?
Yzy:(host made fun of Rittachi) for Rittachi of course it's winter.
Taisei: Girachi is winter
Erica: [Moffun voice] Himechi is spring.
crowd/host doesn't really get moffun at first but yuzuki pointed it out.
[Host asks how to chi-ify Aoto's name] Aochi is summer. Because I get to meet everyone みんなと会いえる + *walks backstage index finger & arm raised*
Q4: 好きなセリフものまね immitate your favourite lines (of another character)
So: Ah I wrote that? Yzy: (tsukkomi) Did you forget?
host: (sth like) you want to do it so bad you did just that haha
So: well then I'll do Gira. "一草一木" line. eh what's next? Taisei follows up to "jakku no ou Gira!"
Erica: Kono Sukapon Tanuki! (i rmb she did the same thing in an interview but i forgot whcih. literally SO adorable my health bar is out)
Aoto repeast the tanuki line
Aoto: O~RE~WA~ JER~RA~MIE.... (make every syllable long like a skipping kindergardtener, got complained doesn't sound like jeramie at all)
Yzy: (in her own voice) ただわがままに 我が道を行く (himeno's catchphrase) (ah... so this is the world where yuzuki's got himeno's role...)
Masahi: (full kabuki face + gestures) Kaguragi Dybowski!
So and Yzy tsukkomi with the usual So Tsukkomi Pose.
Taisei: Then I'll do Onii-chaan! (He said Onii-chan yesterday too [CRY]) Shugoddom's King, Racules Husty. I am the nation. (same as relay interview)
the ep10 cockpit roll call! with jera! (evil king, wise king, queen of beatuy, bounty lord, immovable sovereign, king of the in-betweens)
Music live
original singer of Waking the King. I know he's experienced but he seemef to be quite popular? suddenly a rush of cheers from behind me when he appeared on stage. But his pitch and control was so good though. I like this insert a lot too and the first verse is just his vocals over piano and instantly gave me goosebumps.
he also sang the OP that he described as "a challenge". The cast reappeared after the singer asked us to "called for Kingohgers from your heart!"
The cast came holding their plushies and promote them.
OP DANCE IN REAL LIFE!!
They danced up to before the chorus then walked off-stage to greet the audience. They pretty much went around the whole paid area. Aoto was especially eager to wave at the audience. (It's between his blue hair and Kagu's head that I can spot from the back)
the dance was the energetic version from new op. The suit actors did the in-character dance before them.
When they came back onto stage after greeting, Taisei said something/bumped into Yuzuki and she did her 'clap knees laugh' thing.
Then it's the closing words (your usual "thank you for coming in the heat", "please support us and the film") and a group photo + countdown tiktok with the audience.
Aoto waved back during to the crowd during the photo and Yuzuyan said thank you after taking the tiktok.
there's a kid with a pillbug taxi prop in the front and a kid dressed as Shiokara with his baby brother as Gira. + girls in yellow princess dresses.

Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan Review.
None of the main heroes had any character development and were pretty two dimensional characters. Asao/VulPanther is the comic relief who loves curry and it was revealed in one episode that he wanted to get his father’s approval, and that’s pretty much it. Samejima/VulShark is the stoic second-in-command and an oceanographer. There was one episode that revealed he was motivated to join the team by the deaths of his parents and younger brother in a war in Africa, which made him want to protect world peace. It was a very deep backstory, although it was never brought up again in the series. Ryusuke/VulEagle 1 was a forgettable Sentai red who barely had a personality and he never had any focus episodes. He was just the typical leader and that’s it. It doesn’t help that he left the series after episode 23 to fulfill his duties for NASA, but you would not be likely be affected by his departure since there will be so little that you learn about him to make you at all invested in his character. Hiba/VulEagle 2, who replaced Ryusuke, was a master swordsman who had some charisma and was given a cool katana weapon unlike his predecessor, but Hiba wasn’t given much to do either. His introduction could’ve been handled better as there was no buildup and he literally only appeared in the last few minutes in his debut episode before Ryusuke departed from the series. It was basically, “By the way, Ryusuke is leaving Sun Vulcan for NASA, but don’t worry, this new guy who just showed up and conveniently is a friend of Ryusuke will take over as VulEagle.” Chief Arashiyama was a decent mentor and his relationship with his daughter, Misa, was pretty nice, but nothing really stood out about him. Misa was a kind girl and a good ally to the Sun Vulcan. In one episode, it was revealed she is master fencer and she wanted to use her skills to become a hero and fight. This could’ve set up a cool arc for her about fighting alongside the Sun Vulcan despite her lack of powers, but unfortunately the show never brought up her fighting skills again after that one episode and she continued to be a damsel in distress.
Machine Empire Black Magma was a solid group of villains. They proved to be legitimate threats and can be pretty menacing such as when they reveal their robotic faces which often provided a more creepy and intense atmosphere, it’s a shame that was dropped after the first half of this season. There was some big attempts at creating engaging conflicts among the villains that made them more than just baddies who are evil. But, at times, the villains can be rather dull and their storyline was not that memorable compare to other Super Sentai villains. Also, their storyline took up most of the focus for this season’s endgame arc which didn’t leave much for the heroes to do. The way most of villains were defeated by Sun Vulcan was rather anticlimactic as if they were just another monster of the week. It doesn’t help that the leader of Black Magna, Führer Hell Saturn, never actually fought against Sun Vulcan.

After watching that movie and thinking about it for the past day, I feel like I understand why I didn’t like the Donbrothers segment (since it was a crossover)
It’s because it didn’t feel like a donbrothers segment
Like although I joke about the show being a fever dream. It had heart. The characters began as assholes and self absorbed. If it weren’t for the superhero duties none of these people would have interacted as they come from all walks of life.
But as the series progressed, they had to deal with each other’s flaws and weaknesses and confront their own issues to work together as a team. They learnt to care for each other and make genuine bonds with each other. No matter how crazy the hijinks were, they became a found family and I loved that. Even the antagonists learnt how to live like humans thanks to the main team and culminated in them working together as a single unit.
In the finale, Tarou asks the rest of the team if they regretted joining the Donbrothers. And that was when we got to see how they’ve all matured. It was really nice to see and I think the finale was a satisfying conclusion to Donbrothers.
Yeah now time for the ranting
Okay so you know how I explained how all the characters matured over the span of the series and became better people as a result of being in the donbrothers team. Yeah we throw that all in the bin in a time skip one year later. Now all of them have gotten inflated egos and think their too good to be part of the group anymore. They literally threw out all of their character development just for a 20 minute segment where they had to ‘relearn’ how to be a hero.
The most egregious part was how they did Jirou so dirty. He had gone from a naive but endearing wannabe superhero into a more heroic and calm character by the end of the series. But nooo. Now he’s stuck up and a whining baby shouting orders and blackmailing the rest of the team. He also fought with Sonoi and while in the main series they did hint towards another spar to see who is the stronger, Sonoi stated that Jirou WAS NOT like the person he first fought at the beginning of the show. Even at the end of the crossover movie, he still doesn’t learn anything and is instead rewarded by showing a woman who looked like a past love interest WHICH DOESN’T MAKE SENSE AT ALL!! Look if they wanted to show Jirou’s flaws as a leader that’s fine but they could have done it in different ways not ruin his character entirely in the process.
Another small bit that I don’t think most people cared about was that they did Natsumi dirty as well. She said two lines in the movie but it was so different to how she was portrayed in the series. A multi-faceted character with an overarching story with two of the main characters in the most soap opera I’ve seen got boiled down to “I don’t want you to talk to him, he’s my ex plus it’s awkward ” which was not how she felt at the end of the arc. They just wanted to make cheap drama and didn’t look at her character as a whole.
Then there are the character deaths. Look I know people die and come back to life willy nilly but COME ON. Sonoi dying in the last five minutes with no big impact save for Sonoza finding him dead at the oden cart. No scene where the characters would find him. Smh. I’m pretty sure it will be resolved in another movie or V-cinema but that was such a dumb decision to make. Also Tarou dying didn’t feel as emotional it just felt like something to move the plot along and while I did like the funeral scene I think it should have been handled a lot better.
I feel like the Donbrother segment didn’t have a clear idea on what it was going to be about so it just went “hey let’s revert the characters back to square 1 and make them relearn the lesson” but that just cheapens the story of Donbrothers. It didn’t have heart, it was more hollow.
There were parts of the movie I did enjoy. The humour was great and the interactions between the two sentai teams were nice and fun. They should have focused on that more in my opinion and integrating the two plotlines together rather than having it be two separate bits and an interaction in the last 15 minutes. They had a perfect opportunity as both series have a Kaito so explaining that would be an easy way of creating a movie but eh it is what it is.
Yeah I’m done ranting about the movie. Overall it was a 6/10 nothing too special. My opinion is my own and I understand that it will be different to others (seriously I went on Twitter for the first time just to see other people’s opinions and people were praising it). I will watch it again in the future to see if my perspective changes but until then it was an eh movie without cool set ups but was a disservice to the original donbrothers journey.

How you enjoying i believe you said Fresh Precure??
Yep, and after watching the first seventeen episodes, I can confirm that unfortunately, despite the title, the show is not about Will Smith becoming a Precure. It’s still good though, even if the first arc is a little slow at times.
The main character, Love/Cure Peach is a very energetic girl who tends to prioritize the happiness of others to the point where her first scene is her crying over someone else’s romantic advances getting turned down after she tries to help them confess, and almost immediately gets over it. Her compassion for others is obviously how she gets her powers, since she saves a dancer she idolizes (which I’ll get to later).
I still think Love is a pretty good character. She’s compassionate, and wants to help others, but she’s still impulsive, and tends to push herself too far at times, not unlike what Nodoka would do nearly a decade later.
I generally think these Pink Cures are more consistently likable compared to the more hot-headed Red leads in one of Toei’s other heavy hitters, Super Sentai.
It’s also implied that Cure Peach is kind of like a split personality because of how Love acted while transformed for the first time, but it’s pretty much dropped afterwards
Another thing I think is interesting is how Love is friends with the people who become her teammates.
Miki/Cure Berry tends to act more high class (Criminy, is every Blue in this franchise either rich or this stoic?), and tends to balance out Love more, though she still tends to be just as impulsive at times, all while trying to make it seem like she’s perfect. She also has dreams of being a model, which isn’t explored that much compared to what would later happen with Kirara.
Inori/Cure Pine or “Buki” to her friends is the soft one of the three who’s a total animal lover with not a lot of self-esteem, but being a Precure and a dancer helps boost her confidence greatly. There’s not much to say, but I still really like this character and how she connects with the mascots this time around.
Tarte is a ferret from the Sweets Kingdom who was tasked with finding the Precure and raising Chiffon, this... I want to say bear fairy with psychic powers. They’re both pretty fun characters. There’s a little subplot with Buki being afraid of Tarte thanks to a traumatic experience with ferrets in the past, but it’s not drawn out and gets resolved by Episode 10.
Chiffon’s also pretty cute with how he uses her unholy magic to pull pranks and generally acting like an actual infant the Cures have to raise. The whole reason they get new weapons is because they all had their own episodes to bond with Chiffon, with Love making baby formula for her, Buki taking care of her when she gets sick (It was constipation, and yes, the ending was worse than when “Backwarder” did it), and Miki was aware of how she was the last one, so she voluntarily took care of Chiffon but realized she was trying to extort her into getting a new toy. It’s such a clever way to introduce the new weapons while giving some character growth.
Another major ally comes in the form of Miyuki, the leader of a dance group Love enjoys, and as a reward for Love saving her in the first episode, decides to give Love, Miki, and Buki dance lessons.
I like how they set her up as this sort of mentor figure who gives them some advice, and she’s really like a big sister for Love at times.
They seem to be implying she’ll get a bigger role as the fourth member of the team, but I’m pretty sure she’s just a red herring. GET IT?
But my favorite character has to be Kaoru, the donut cafe owner whose donuts Love and Tarte can’t get enough of. This dude is just awesome. He’s normally laid back, but other times, he’s implied to be aware of the Cures identities after learning Tarte can talk, but most importantly, he’s hilarious.
The villains this time are called Labyrinth, lead by Lord Moebus, searching for something called Infinity, believing human misery caused by Nakewamekes will reveal whatever the hell Infinity is.
The first general introduced is Eas, a sly girl who tries to manipulate Love into giving her her transformation device while disguised as a friend.
It’s really interesting because they don’t just dumb down the characters for Eas to get close. She genuinely acts like a friend to Love, and love sees her like a friend too. There’s this one episode where she wins a four-leaf clover necklace and gives it to Eas, and in her next major appearance, she’s shown to be wearing it.
In another episode where Love and Miyuki have a brief falling out, Eas tries to get Love to cut off all ties with Miyuki to drive up her sorrow, and in next time she hangs out with them, Miki and Buki (under the influence of a Nakewameke making them tell the truth) acknowledge how much that hurt Love. It wasn’t just a random filler episode that was forgotten. It was a really tough moment for Love.
And I think all of this is building up to some kind of redemption arc where she either betrays the villains or gets killed for her troubles.
Westar is the brute/comic relief of the team, and he’s pretty funny, though he’s the least interesting of the three.
Soular, on the other hand, is far more menacing and tends to strategize more. His first Nakewameke seemed harmless and just erased toys and food for kids to cry about, but then he thought of doing the same to their parents, and had he succeeded, would have a massive body count in his first episode alone. Compared to Eas and Westar, Soular doesn’t screw around, and I love him for it.
But yeah, while I think there’s a little too much filler at first like with the other seasons I watched, I’m still really looking forward to seeing where this show goes and if it’s really as good as the fans say it is.

Oh god I somehow miscounted and thought I was done with my review of the April Fools Event groups. Ok so here I am with a late Part 5 for the group, Hobbyist Meetings, on a Weekend or Kyujitsu, Shumijin Doushi de. Similar to 25ji, I don’t know how to tag them, but I put both names just in case. Anyways, let’s gooooo.
So similar to 25ji, this group all met online and Mizuki declares that they’re the leader of the group. In the first convo, they’re all meeting together in person offline for the first time and they all seem pretty similar to their OG selves. Ofc, each of them seem to have big differences when you compare the paths they took. Since Honami is here and not in a band w/ her friends, it’s theorized that she didn’t make up with them. Minori is here too and while she is definitely still an idol fan, especially a fan of Haruka’s, she isn’t an idol. She might still be trying, but I’m honestly not sure if the idol companies in the area will pick her with what we know about them. Nene seems pretty similar to her original self, but it doesn’t look like she’s trying to be on stage anymore and I’m not sure how close she is to Rui in this AU. And then Mizuki is the leader here, and not a part of 25ji since we’ve established in previous posts that 25ji never formed. But still, based on their likes and conversation, they all seem to get along pretty well and Mizuki is pretty happy they’re all getting along.
They keep meeting offline and are getting along more and more. Mizuki doesn’t seem to be angsting that much about their secret around the others, but that might be bc Minori & Honami are from Miya and Nene seems to keep to herself so she might not know. Nene is slowly coming out of her shell around the others and is bonding over musicals and video games with them. Minori and Honami are also bonding over their dogs as well which is pretty cute. And then they actually go to Phoenix Wonderland in their last convo. This is probably the most overlap between groups from all of the conversations we’ve seen so far. Mizuki likes the stage group’s show bc they’re a sentai nerd, Nene and Honami point out that Kohane is actually a surprisingly good singer (guess some things don’t change), and Minori is close to dying bc she saw Haruka up close on stage. And then after waking up Minori, they all decide to chat some more.
So yeah, I mean all of the convos are fluffy and cute slice of life stuff with this group which I’m fine with (I like it), but it also doesn’t really give me much to work with here. A thing I noticed was that Honami mentioned that Kohane is Minori’s classmate, so I guess the class structures are still relatively the same. Though I wonder if Minori and Kohane aren’t as close as friends with Shiho since Shiho is probably out of school a lot bc of her idol group. The same idea can also apply to An, I wonder if Mizuki isn’t as close friends with An since An wouldn’t have as much time to help out with the disciplinary committee as an idol. Mizuki mentions that they don’t really have people they can talk about their hobbies with, but Mizuki didn’t really seem to have a lot of friends at the start of the main story either. I think Mizuki is still friends with Rui here, but it’s hard to say if Mizuki talks to Rui a lot since Rui is partners with Tsukasa here. I also wonder if Nene maybe isn’t as close to Rui here as well since I’m not sure how long Rui has been running around with Tsukasa here.  Minori also never met Haruka here on the rooftop, so I’m guessing she never met Airi or Shizuku either.
This group seems like a fun group and that they could even easily become friends in the original story. Good vibes between the group. But I also wonder how long they would remain friends or how deep their friendship would go. Also, I’m not sure their issues would really be addressed. If Honami will ever realize that she doesn’t talk about her actual opinions with her school friends, if Minori will be forced to give up her dreams of being an idol w/ continuous rejections, if Nene will get over her stage anxiety, or if Mizuki would ever reveal their secret. It’s hard to say if any of those issues would be touched and well that might lead to regrets further down the line. It’s also kind of a group with some layers of sadness too since there are missed chances here. Mizuki never meets 25ji and as a result, they don’t have someone like Ena who will try to help them learn how to trust. Honami doesn’t make up with her childhood friends. Nene doesn’t have Rui around and doesn’t reignite her desire to be on the stage again bc of her stage anxiety still being there. Minori might end up giving up her idol dream bc she’s not given her chance here. But yeah with these AU versions, I guess they can’t be sad bc they don’t know what they never had. So while I do like this group, it’s also a little sad to me.
A little rushed, but I also don’t really have much to say about this group. I might do another part or an epilogue as a wrap up on some thoughts on this AU as a whole as well as maybe some scenarios. I really liked this event and might bring it up in the future bc it’s super interesting. Thanks for reading!

Tropical-Rouge! Precure
So I've pointed this out before, but it's weird how all of Toei's heroes, apart from Revi/Vice, are all concurrently white. We've got Zenkaiser whose second in command is red, Gammamon who's the first main Digimon to not be a primary color, and, the subject of today, Cure Summer. While pink isn't as set in stone as red is for Sentai, white is more often a second-in-command-ish color (White, Egret, Rhythm), though I suppose all 3 of the aforementioned heroes are also very colorful apart from being just white. Zenkaiser and Summer both have stripes of their team's colors, and Gammamon evolves into four different Digimon (red, blue, green, and black). It's an interesting change of pace, and I'm very curious as to why they decided to do this.
The Good: This was a very strong season. Coming off the very mellow Healin' Good Precure, Tropical Rouge is immediately bursting with energy in contrast. Manatsu is very much like Kamen RIder Fourze’s Gentarou; she's a character that undergoes very little development herself, and is instead a positive force of change for the people around her. That being said, she might also be one of the weakest characters on the team, and is a strange instance of the team leader not being the main character. I liked Sango, but she was also kind of weak. She wasn't a bad character, and her individual character episodes were always interesting even if not my favorites, but the other girls each had a backstory and development that was built up throughout the season, while Sango felt mostly like a background character. I found Minori to be very funny, partly because of how much more animated she was when a Precure than she was normally. Her story was built up throughout the season, and the finale was technically her payoff. Asuka was definitely the strongest of the original four, with a very strong overarching plot that popped up very often over the course of the show. My only real issue with her story was that the student council prez was very antagonistic toward the group throughout the show, but had a somewhat abrupt face turn right at the end. Laura, despite starting the show as the team's "fairy" and not being the leader, was the main character. She undergoes the most development of all the characters, usually is directly involved in everyone else's to a greater extent than even Manatsu, and most of the ongoing plot is centered around her. At the beginning, I had the feeling they were going to speed her along to getting her legs, which I thought of as a bit of a cop out, but the way they developed her character made me quickly start rooting for her to get them. I don't think the show would be as good as it was without Laura around.
Tumblr media
The overall plot was interesting, too. Every time we got a bit of information about the Procrastination Queen it got me theorizing about what her end goal was, what her connection to Cure Oasis was, and while I think a few of my theories were a little more interesting than what actually happened, it was still cool to see the mystery answered in a very Precure way.
Lastly, the animation this season was phenomenal. Episode 29 is probably the best animated episode in the history of the show. I can't help but feel that they took all the time and manpower they would usually use for their Spring/Summer movie on it. And it's not a one-off instance, as there were periodically some amazing animated moments.
Tumblr media
The Bad: I brought this up briefly, but while Laura, Minori, and Asuka were all well developed, Manatsu didn't have any development and Sango had so little she sometimes felt like a side character. Honestly, some of the villains felt more developed than them, which is odd considering they were the first and second members of the team. Don't get me wrong, I really like that they broke the norm and made the fairy character the focus of the season, but I also really enjoyed the interactions between Manatsu and Laura, and it would have been nice if Manatsu was more important to Laura's story.
Tumblr media
Just because it bothers me so much, I do want to bring up the Asuka vs Prez thing. This is probably American vs Japanese ideals, but when we learn their backstory during the train episode, Asuka is entirely in the right, IMO. She catches their opponents cheating, does nothing but grabs one of their wrists to stop them and yells, which are pretty understandable reactions, and the Prez gives the cheaters exactly what they want and drop out of the match, something they didn’t have to do at all. Asuka also didn’t want them disqualified or anything, she just wanted to beat them at tennis, which is a very honorable way of going about things. And even if Asuka got understandably upset and left the room, the Prez had over a year to talk to her and try and patch things up and get her to rejoin the team, but instead she acts like a jerk toward her. I like that they end the show on good terms, and being friends with Asuka improves her personality, but I would have liked an apology or admission she put her supposedly best friend in a pretty unfair situation.
And as much as I enjoyed the plot we got, it was very sparsely added to. Basically, every time we went through a full round or two of character focused stories we'd get a small tidbit. I really wish there was a bit more sprinkled in, as at times it felt like I could skip maybe half the series and still get the full story. This form of writing also made it awkward right after Laura learned about the memory erasure, as she was still going on about being queen even though it felt like she was having second thoughts the episode before.
Overall, this was a very good series, my gripes aside. I might have to go rewatch Heartcatch (which may be apropos as this season crosses over with it), but Tropical Rouge may surpass it as my second favorite season of the show on the merits of Laura's character arc alone. It's definitely hard to beat Go! Princess in my books, but during the first half of the show I was wondering if it would. Despite my complaints about Manatsu and Sango, I still like them, and the individual episodes are still strong even if they don't always move a character's or the overarching plot forward.
I'm not super excited about going into another season with a baby. I've aired my conspiracy theories about that already, so I won't go into it here. I'm kind of excited that we're getting a male main character, since we haven't really gotten that since Go! Princess and Happiness Charge. I guess my opinions going in are very neutral, so let's hope it's a good one and my worries will be easily and quickly subverted. Still, I've never watched a season of Precure I thought was bad, it just probably won't be as good as this one.

So i did a little thing on Kensei and his biker motif and that included his hollow form looking like he was made out of car parts. and i figure I might as well tackle Mashiro's hollow form now, since it's adjacent.
To start with, it should be noted that Mashiro has a whole thing going on with her right out the gate. Unlike the other Visored who all seem to have adopted some kind of passably human attire, Mashiro is out here running around in a super hero suit... The outfit itself pulls from some pretty clear influences:
Tumblr media
The little stripey things down the chest are a look taken from Himitsu Sentai Goranger, the 1971 live action super hero show. In the team of five, each ranger has a number and a matching number of stripes down either side of the suit's front fastening zipper. Where as the ascot+jumpsuit is verymuch the definitive Kamen Rider aesthetic. It's also possible that her weird giant goggles and even her green hair are also meant to evoke the general look of Kamen Rider's helmet.
(it's really weird that her goggles just sort of sit on her head? they don't even appear to be connected to one another, let alone to her head... The only reason I even really identify them as goggle is actually because of her TBtP design replacing them with regular sunglasses, which retroactively makes it clear that they're definitely meant to be eyewear. (even if she never wears them, like some sort of digimon protagonist))
And, as usual, I've mentioned before(because i'm a broken record) that these are contemporary sources, as both shows came about in the 1970s, and are foundational works in the tokusatsu genre, and consequently the building blocks of the Power Rangers franchise. But I want to elaborate on that because there's a lot of cool trivia in there...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both shows were created by legendary mangaka Shotaro Ishinomori, who was also the creator of the 1960s manga, Cyborg 009. Cyborg 009 also featured a team of uniformed, scarf wearing cyborg supersoldiers. In fact, Cyborg 009 is basically the first Japanese superhero team.(and remains an enduring classic, even as continual remakes and reboots in the past decade have butchered it....)
The uniforms, the 5 man team, the helmets/masks, the heroic scarf/ascot, the team poses(and the solo poses), the evil organizations and monsters of the week, the "<insert name> KICK!" all stem from this one man's body of work. So she's not just a throwback to one particular set of characters or shows, or even one person's body of work; her look really is quintessentially THE image of a Japanese superhero.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway the original Kamen Rider helmet is designed after a grasshopper and thus has the big compound bug eye lenses --even as the later series drifted away from the bug theme, the iconic eye shape has stayed-- which is why Mashiro has the big goggles, as well as why her mask has the giant eye holes --Also the heart shape of the mask is a throwback to the heart shape of the Pink Ranger in Goranger.
Tumblr media
As a grasshopper, the original Kamen Rider's finishing move was the now famously imitable RIDER KICK! And in every subsequent iteration, some variation on the Rider Kick has remained the Kamen Rider signature move. And this in turn is why Mashiro's hollow has a whole legs and kick focused thing going on.
Incidentally though, there's a whole thing about her demeanor that doesn't just echo the superhero look from the 70s; With her energetic and childlike demeanor, it seems like the indication is that she dresses this way very earnestly. She isn't just dressed in a way that makes her look like a superhero to us as readers, she looks like someone who is trying to dress like a superhero, even to other people in-world. On the one hand she probably reads most readily as a cosplayer, but I feel like the implication here is that she actually thinks she is/wants to be a super hero.
Also, not to dip too far into headcanon, but given the way the Visored were first introduced as a rag tag looking bunch of misfits, it really seemed like the implication was they all got their powers separately and sought eachother out only after struggling with their own inner hollows; Essentially just mirroring Ichigo's experience... That they, while human, started turning into hollows. They fought off the hollow process resulting in giving them shinigami powers. but they struggled with a growing inner hollow, until someone showed up and offered to teach them to control the mask.
Tumblr media
Also, there was that real ominous throw away exchange where Mashiro brings up that the first time she pulled out her own mask it lasted 15 consecutive hours. and Kensei didn't believe her, as if he wasn't around when it happened, or isn't even closely acquainted enough to just know it as a personal fact... Obviously that's contradicted much later when the TBtP has her as his former lieutenant, but it has a few vague implications...
Mashiro: ね—ね— ベリたんてさ何でこんなことしてんだっけ?
Hey~ hey~ Why's Berry-tan doing this?
Kensei: 虚化状態を長時間キ—プす為の訓練だよオメ—もやったろ
It's training to keep Hollow state for a long time. You did it too
Mashiro: あたしやってないモン
I did not
Kensei: ンだと? ウソっけ...
What? That's a lie...
Shinji: ホンマや白は最初から15時間以上虚化できたからなァ一人だけ虚化保持訓練してへんねん
it's true. because Mashiro was able to Hollowize for more than 15 hours she's the one person who didn't do Hollow state training
As always there's just a lot to be reckoned with when it comes to any number of swerves that happened in the middle of the Arrancar arc, but given the implications of how the hollow mask really works, we're lead to believe the mask's overall power and effectiveness is one of two things...
Either, like the zanpakutou spirits, they're a matter of making peace with the reflection of the inner self.
OR it's possible that the mask correlates to a total lack of balance, and just embracing the selfishness
this would btw more readily address the initial conflict between old man Zangetsu and the inner hollow, as they're of course still one and the same, but Ichigo needs to accept and embrace the negative side of his inner self in order to make peace with both of them.
Anyway point being Mashiro's apparent lack of a need for training would suggest she's super in tune with her hollow? Given her childish and hyperactive personality, it might just be that she's so immature that she doesn't have much of an inner conflict. She wants to dress like a superhero? So she does. She's confused? she whines and asks annoying questions about it. She's frustrated or unhappy? She rolls around on the floor and throws a goofy little tantrum. She doesn't have shame or hangups or a part of her she wants to repress, she's exactly who she is.
Which makes me think that if they had just been a ragtag group that goes around recruiting new Visored when they find them, like they did with Ichigo(instead of just one group that had always been together, which was just a boring explanation) then I can't help but imagine that when they found Mashiro, she must have been running around in her human life actually being a superhero.
Oh right, and Kamen Rider is so named because he rides a motorcycle. So Mashiro's partyl based on a motorcycle riding hero, and the TBtP made Muguruma a biker gang leader. Which explains why they thematically fit on the same squad. But is hollow Muguruma supposed to be hollow Mashiro's iconic hero bike?

How would you describe the relationship between each respective goggleboy and 'rival'? Ive seen different interpretations but im curious what you think! Not to mention that the fans are sometimes arguing over who the 'rival' actually is, like with Daisuke where some people say its Ken and others say its Takeru. (I dont think there are actual rivals in the show, except for maybe Manga!Kiriha who outright says he will be just that with Taiki.)
One thing to keep in mind is that the word "rival" has kind of integrated itself into anime lingo as a full-on English loanword, so it comes from expectations of anime tropes more than anything. While even official staff has used that word in talking about Digimon, as you say, it never really fit to begin with, because not only has Digimon TV anime never been a particularly conventional shounen series in many ways, that term was also mostly coined in light of series where that term made a lot more sense. As in, they were more likely to be actually competing over something (in sports, or something tournament-based like card games); in that sense, a "rival" would be someone who might be antagonistic by being on the other side of the field, but would have a mutually positive relationship with the other person overall because the competitiveness would keep both of them on their toes and allow both of them to improve together. Digimon is not the first time this term has started getting overapplied to contexts where it doesn't really fit at all (it's been going on in Super Sentai for years), so people generally have a greater perception of it broadly meaning "two characters who have differing opinions on how something should be done due to their differing personalities, and sometimes fight over it", but in Digimon especially, it really does seem like trying to smash a square peg into a round hole.
The short answer: Xros Wars is probably the only one you can make a real argument for.
The long answer, in detail:
Adventure: I cannot emphasize enough that Adventure, being a series that was really big on that whole trope subversion thing, is a series that casts the trope of "rivalry" as "getting in a lot of fights" as a bad thing -- it's actually pretty unsubtle about it, because the word "rival" itself is explicitly used in Adventure episode 44, by Jureimon trying to manipulate Yamato. Or, in other words, "hey, if you saw someone who's supposed to be your supportive friend as someone you had to constantly compete against for no good reason, wouldn't that be really messed up?" Adventure does not even bother with or remotely believe in the idea that fighting somehow is a sign of how good friends you are, at least, not as long as that fighting is a sign of genuine hostility and refusal to communicate (which is why Yamato punching Taichi in 02 doesn't count). Every time Taichi and Yamato got in a fight back in Adventure, it was heated and ugly, and everyone in their presence was horrified, and once they sorted out their issues in Adventure, their appearances in 02 and Kizuna involved properly talking things out and making an active attempt to understand each other's feelings. There's a bit of bickering between them due to said opposing personalities, but it's never over anything serious (see the contrast in Kizuna between them having a bit of a minor row at the beginning, but high-fiving right after and spending the rest of the movie practically counseling each other).
02: Straight-up does not exist. Daisuke may have seen Takeru in that way due to the Hikari issue at first, but he was really running in circles getting absolutely nowhere about it, Takeru was mostly like "okay, you have fun with that," their only major argument about anything was the very serious issue in 02 episode 11, and it still resulted in Daisuke trying to understand Takeru's feelings. I think all of it boils down to Daisuke himself just not having that kind of personality to begin with, because he's friendly and supportive before anything else, and the whole thing with Takeru became a non-issue after a fashion (way before we even get into Kizuna, at that). Ken has the word "rival" sometimes applied to him in official franchise media, but nobody ever believes it. Sure, Daisuke and Ken have fairly complementary personalities, but they seem to both be aware of this fact and actively using it to help each other. It's very, very, very hard to imagine them ever getting into any kind of fight the way Taichi and Yamato used to in Adventure. It's just not happening! They're "best friends" who enjoy each other's company and actively hang out, and...yeah, that's it.
Tamers: Also does not exist! I know a lot of people really try to say it's Ruki because she's the one with the lone-wolf attitude and aggravated Takato at first, but my impression of Takato's attitude with her wasn't out of any competition but more that he'd like it if she didn't try to pick fights with him. Which she does actually stop after a while, mind you, and you could even make an argument that she's more of a foil to Jian than Takato, because Jian's the one who was completely pacifist at first, with Takato caught in the middle. In the end, Ruki never actually attains a particularly close relationship with Takato compared to Jian, nor does she really keep up a particular competitive streak with Takato; she kind of pops in and out at her leisure because of her more independent streak, and Jian ends up more of Takato's right-hand man (which is why the franchise presumably picks him as the secondary character to feature whenever they do "secondary characters"), but neither Takato nor Jian are prone to conflict and the entire trope is just fundamentally absent. The Tamers trio, is, ultimately, a trio.
Frontier: Takuya and Kouji are probably the first pair to really look like a proper execution of the trope, and at the very least they align pretty perfectly to how it's known in Sentai: a more hot-headed, aggressive lead with a more cool-headed and cynical right-hand man, where they end up often prone to conflict over dispute on how to best lead the team. However, while it's much more of a conventional execution than Adventure (since Adventure had Yamato actually be more prone to being an emotional fuse bomb whereas Taichi was often too chill more than anything), there being any conflict isn’t gone into that deeply beyond just "their personalities are complementary", and in that sense it's not far off from Adventure itself.
Savers: The series kind of baits you into thinking it might go this way when Nanami taunts Tohma about how he had to resort to a Masaru-esque tactic to beat her (it's one of its early red herrings about Tohma supposedly betraying the group), and it does have traces at the start because of how blatant of a foil Tohma is to Masaru, but one thing important to consider is that while the "rivalry" of what's being competed over is barely even relevant in most Digimon series to begin with, Masaru and Tohma don't even have a "group" to lead -- they're the employees under DATS who are being given orders from above, and are dealing with situations as they come. Masaru ends up leading the charge a bit, but he's not actually a leader in any shape or form, and Savers is more of a story of Masaru's coming-of-age than anything else, so while the series mostly has to do with his personal philosophy more than Tohma's, it ultimately lets the two of them pursue their lives their own ways. Masaru's worst bout of infamous anger is at being hurt over Tohma's apparent betrayal, not against him personally.
Xros Wars: I would say this is the only series to date where the term "rivals" properly applies, and it's because they're fighting over something concrete: the Code Crowns, and eventually Digital World territory. So in this case, for the first two parts, the answer is obviously Kiriha; Nene was a rival at first, but after various events happened she allied with Xros Heart early into Death Generals, and while Taiki and Kiriha had a relationship of mutual respect, Kiriha still considered him an opponent over what they were competing for until eventually the Xros Heart United Army fully came into formation. In the manga version, Kiriha does invoke the word "rival" in the above sense of competing to polish one's skills, but ironically, its version of the Death Generals arc involves them being much more in-tune with the same goals, so it might actually apply less because Taiki kind of responds with "uh, sure...?" since he's not nearly as interested in self-improvement. In Hunters, while it initially seems like it might be Yuu, the answer is really Ryouma, and note that Ryouma never really forms a particularly close relationship with Tagiru; it's just that he's the person most at the forefront for competing with Tagiru in the Hunt, to the point he's the first person chosen to wield the Brave Snatcher and turns out to be a bit of a foil for Tagiru in terms of actually having admired Taiki this whole time.
Appmon: Also does not exist. Rei tried to do the whole schtick in terms of competing for the Seven Code Appmon at first, but Haru was having none of that and immediately reached out to him emotionally, worrying about his welfare, and although Rei had a bit of a detached relationship with the other Appli Drivers thereafter, it really was friendly more than anything, just a bit awkward. Haru and Yuujin aren't even on the table, since their relationship is "best friends" akin to Daisuke and Ken.
Adventure: reboot: Also does not exist, considering that Taichi and Yamato bickering over the best way to approach things is limited to the very beginning of the series (and one of those times was with Yamato and Sora, not Yamato and Taichi, at that). In fact, I think most of these kids have been acting separately for most of the series anyway...?

You know what? I’ve never watched Super Sentai before. Let’s just get real into Super Sentai.
Himitsu Sentai Gorenger Episode 1: The Crimson Sun! The Invicible Gorengers!
So the majority of the episode is basically just set-up, but it takes a sort of ‘middle of the story’ approach to the team’s origin story. You know, how they’ll have them already working together, already on their mission, and then later they might have a flashback to how they actually got started.
We do get a broad strokes idea, though. Basically, we got a GI Joe vs Cobra story with a paramilitary organization called EAGLE fighting a terrorist group called Black Cross. (Who’s leader inexplicably looks like he’s from the Ku Klux Klan for some reason)
That alone kinda threw me a bit. I’m coming at this series as a long time fan of Power Rangers, so having the main villains not be monsters and just… people in suits is kinda weird for me. (I mean, they’re always people in suits, but now it’s in-universe)
And these are full-blown terrorists too. Straight up merc-ing crowds of people with uzis and blowing up buildings. Black Cross came to wreck shit and kill people.
Hell, what little origin story we do get for the Gorangers (Is it Gorangers or Gorengers? I can never tell…) shows that they were all the last survivors of their respective EAGLE base getting absolutely slaughtered by Black Cross. Although I kinda have to laugh at the Green Ranger’s introduction. Literally, the only reason he survived the attack was because he was too busy feeding the base’s carrier pigeons. I like to believe he’s actually really low in the ranks of EAGLE but… he’s literally the only one left from his base, so might as well make him a Ranger.
Also, I don’t think the Red Ranger was even a member of EAGLE before Black Cross blew everything up. He was literally just playing soccer outside the base when shit went down and his brother (who apparently was EAGLE’s commander) got ganked. Maybe it was a company soccer game?
(As an aside, I’m probably going to refer to the team by Ranger color for a bit before I memorize their names. Sorry…)
We get a bit of a timeskip where they’re already in the Ranger suits and already know each other. Like I said, we’ll probably get a flashback that shows us their proper origin story, but this is good enough set up for now.
Most of our introductions to the Gorangers proper is them training with their respective weapons before getting an invite from the Red Ranger to get their asses over to a diner called Snack Con.
Blue Ranger has a bow. Yellow Ranger is pulling a truck up a mountain. Green Ranger has a boomerang. And the Pink Ranger has fucking grenades!
Fucking immediately, Pink is my favorite Goranger purely for that level of practicality. Like, guys, you are fighting actual fucking terrorists. Put the bows and boomerangs away and start packing! Pink’s got the right idea!
Also, Yellow pretty much instantly establishes himself as ‘the fat one’ by virtue of eating four fucking curry bowls at once. I feel bad for Blue who has to share a cockpit with him later.
Speaking of Blue, he’s apparently a… cowboy? Like, with the hat and a guitar and assless chaps and everything. Huh.
Apparently, they haven’t been the Gorangers for long, since they’re only just now being shown their base of operations, their Commanding Officer (who’s just a voice on a TV for now), and their vehicles, including some suped up motorbikes and their airship, the Variblune.
I know enough about Super Sentai to know that they won’t get their first ‘Megazord’ or mecha until the third series ‘Battle Fever J’. So the Variblune is pretty much the closest we’re gonna get. But it’s a pretty cool airship. It’s got flame decals, which you know EAGLE command really pushed for because it’s awesome.
So our Gorangers get their first mission: To rescue a school bus full of kindergartners who have been kidnapped by Black Cross for… evil reasons, I’m sure. Honestly, I think Black Cross just seriously felt like being dicks that day.
The Gorangers try to bust into a warehouse where the kids are being kept, but to no avail.
Our fearless Red Ranger remembers that Blue and Yellow are flying the Variblune above them, and gets a great idea to free the kids trapped inside.
Blow up the building.
I think that might be a bit of an extreme response, Red!!
Hey, the logic is sound! They can’t be the Black Cross’ prisoners if their all dead!
Thankfully, I guess ‘Blow up the building’ actually means ‘Use a giant claw machine grabber to punch a hole through the roof and pick the bus up out of the warehouse.’
Thank god Blue apparently understood that better than I did, or else this would have been a much different episode.
So, the Gorangers chase after Black Cross, including one general named Gold Mask who killed Red’s brother, and have themselves their first fight in the actual suits. We also get to see Red’s personal weapon, which is a whip.
I suppose now would be a good time to discuss the morphing sequence.
There is no morphing sequence.
There’s sort of been this running gag where Green tells Yellow a riddle. ‘What sort of lamp can’t be lit?’ And we have Yellow asking the other Gorangers about it, trying to figure out the answer.
The joke kinda gets a payoff in the fight scene where Yellow’s got one of the Black Cross henchmen in a chokehold and demands he tell him what kind of lamp can’t be lit. The henchman’s response.
“It’s so obvious. A trump.”
I don’t get it.
Also, apparently Pink’s got a second weapon… a mirror that she uses to flash light at her enemy’s face to blind them.
Yeah, I would stick with the grenades. Which I didn’t notice before, but the grenades are actually the heart shaped ‘earrings’ that are dangling off the side of her helmet. I would not put explosives that close to my own head, just saying.
The battle ends with the team employing ‘The Goranger Storm’.
Wow, some kinda cool team attack, finishing move. What’s it look like?
They kick a soccer ball around for a bit, kick it at the bad guy’s head and it explodes.
… Okey-Dokey.
Also, I feel the need to remind you that Gold Mask was the guy who killed Red’s brother. I feel like that should have been a more personal victory for Red, but they just kinda blow his ass up without much fanfare.
So that was the first episode of Gorengers and the first ever episode of Super Sentai as a whole.
All in all, I enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. It definitely shows it’s age, but that can be both a strength and weakness sometimes. I’m not gonna do one of these for every single episode, but I’ll do one for episodes I feel are worth talking about.

Musings of An Otaku #9- On Thomas Oliver....
Being a fan of Power Rangers since the beginning back in 1993 and watching it religiously till Power Rangers: Wild Force. Then having an on-again and off-again to pretty much now. I pretty much watched a few episodes (out of every incarnation) of the Disney-era, got bored or disgusted by the looks of how they approached it and stopped watching. Had hopes when Saban purchased the rights back from the mouse but found myself once again, doing the same thing. Watch a few episodes out of the current series, get bored or disgusted by once again how they approached the series and stopped. Saban passes the torch to Hasbro and I have not picked up watching a single episode at all. Even going back and watching all the Disney seasons to see if my opinions have changed and tried not to compare them so-much to the original source material. However, this is not what this muse is about. It’s a season by season breakdown. Or an American comparison to the original Sentai. No.
There’s one Ranger in particular that every single person seems to be fascinated with. Someone that everyone seems to worship the ground that he walks on. He’s somehow the most powerful Ranger that has ever walked upon planet Earth. Everything seems to revolve around him. And it’s not just the fanbase. Lately, it seems like Hasbro can’t get off of Tommy’s dick either. Every piece of nostalgia has to be Tommy, Tommy, Tommy, Tommy. There are a Shit ton of other Rangers out there that deserve the same treatment. He is not an omniscient God
Now, okay….before I go any further, I am not in any way shape or form dissing Jason David Frank. I love the guy! No, no, no, this is about the character that he portrayed. Unlike some people, I see both JDF and Tommy as two different individuals. Two different people. Like both could reside besides each other in the real world.
This is just about Tommy. And NOT the Tommy from the Boom Studios comic series. Cause...oh my god...yes, he is one powerful son of a bitch. No. No. This is just about the television series, Tommy! No alternate universes being thrown in.
Let’s step back in time for a minute. When Tommy was first introduced into the series and became the evil Green Ranger- I enjoyed the character. I loved the struggle he faced between being good or being evil. Yes, while under Rita’s spell he was pretty powerful but one has to wonder if he wasn’t her power that was enhancing his power and abilities. Any Ranger with the help of an evil witches power can become a pretty strong opponent.
The entire evil Green Ranger saga ends and Tommy joins the side of good (obviously…). Tommy didn’t single handedly defeat Rita in the end because she was banished to the depths of space in another dumpster by Lord Zedd. Moving into season two, obviously we have Lord Zedd taking over and the entire Green Candle saga starting. When he loses the Green Ranger power, it’s understandable. Things do not last forever. Power can’t last forever. Sad to see him leave the Ranger team but I wasn’t devastated. Yes, it was a complete shocker to see the White Ranger power being created. Awesome, new Ranger, new Power. HOWEVER, I knew Tommy wasn’t up and done completely being a Ranger. I had a slight feeling he was going to come back for that. His story as the Green Ranger may have been finished, but this new chapter was just starting.
What I did not like though, was when the Power Transfer took place and he just pushed his way into the leader position. He did not even give Rocky a chance. In Ranger-lore the Red Ranger is typically the leader (no matter what character type they possess). Yeah, Rocky may seem a little aloof (and he’s completely different from Jason), but he still should have been given a chance to prove himself in the position. Was it alright for Tommy to just push him aside without allowing that chance? Why was everyone else so chill with this decision? It was kinda a dick move there, Thomas.
Zeo comes trotting along and almost all the storylines are still focused around Tommy. Granted, yes..he’s finally the Red Ranger. In my eyes, he finally has the mantle to be leader of the group. But still, why was he singled out. I thought the Rangers implored teamwork. I thought to fight evil, they had to fight together- all of them- together. Not this, “Oh! If we just attack Tommy- the others do not matter.” Poor Adam and Rocky were just kinda pushed towards the back burner in this season. And I won’t even get into the strange relationship that seemed to be going on between them. It’s not like Tommy single handedly beat Rita and Zedd. They hightailed it out of dodge when the Machine Empire showed up on their doorstep. Not like he single handedly defeated the Machine Empire either. Shit, the Zeo Rangers did not even destroy the Machine Empire. Zedd and Rita came back to give them their just deserts.
Shifting into Turbo, we see Thomas once again being given the mantle of Red Ranger. Shocker. By now the Rangers are getting ready to graduate (except you, Justin…). This is obviously foreshadowing things to come and another power transfer. Also noted here is where Tommy mentions that when he graduates, he mentions something about becoming a racecar driver or something to that line. If that is the case, then why the hell did years later he show up with a fucking PHD in Paleontology. I would still LOVE to see the look on Billy’s face for that one! He was the science nerd. IMHO, he should have been the one in that role. But nooooo...his character had to be sent off to an all water planet to never be heard from again. In my eye’s the character of Tommy will never be related in any way shape or form to Science. I honestly saw him opening up a dojo of his own (whether it be on the other side of Angel Grove or some other town). When I think of “Tommy” my mind connects that to martial arts and fitness. In a way, he could have been a mentor to a young team of Rangers (a team that revolved around martial arts and not Dinosaurs).
But seriously, I digress. Where within the television tropes did he become this all power being that all of fandom and marketdom has to worship?!  Many other Rangers have shown time and again that they have faced similar situations (that he had gone through) and prevailed. What makes him so special? I mean seriously, cut me some slack! ANDROS FUCKING SACRIFICED ZORDON’S LIFE TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE!!!!!!!!!!!! He did not want to swing that Drill Saber and end Zordon's life, but he still did. He may not have been the best leader. He was kind of a pissy asshole (but I loved him anyways and still do). But this isn’t about Andros. Why is all the attention drawn to this one single character though? Not everyone can relate to Tommy, so why is so much emphasis in Ranger history based around him?
Tommy Oliver is an overrated individual and as the series went on, I became more and more distant away from him. As a character, I only enjoy him in the very early Green Ranger days. I tolerate him from then on. As a leader, yes, I liked Jason. I liked Rocky for his goofy side and he should have been given a chance to prove himself as a leader. In the alternate universe of the comic book series- I absolutely love Tommy. Lord Drakkon, Shattered Grid, pure evil, pure insanity, pure mayhem. Yes! Jason David Frank- is an amazing person, a great actor, he did a good job portraying a character that I love to hate.

Blooming Squadron Mankai Ranger: Event Translation Ch1-5
My mom loves Tasuku and she hasn’t managed to get Nocturnality Tasuku in English. So, I decided to just do this translation first. I’m supposed to do Glitter Kazu but you know... After this~
Blooming Squadron Mankai Ranger Ch1-5 / / Ch6-10 / / Epilogue
Tumblr media
Disclaimer:
A3! is owned by Liber Entertainment
Translator’s Note: Sentai can be translated into Squadron, but they like to say Sentai-mono which just translate to Sentai related stuff. Squadron related stuff sounds weird to me so I just decided to keep is as Sentai.
2 class system that Tsumugi mentioned later seemed to be about the fact that there is a “legend” class Sentai Ranger. But to be fair, I’m not that familiar with Ranger thingy so do tell me if it’s not accurate.
Hiro:
Tumblr media
Bartender:
Welcome.
Syu:
…Hmm?
Oh, isn’t it Hiro?
Hiro:
Syu-san you came here too.
Syu:
I guess. It’s just a place for me to enjoy sake alone.
Hiro:
Since you’re here, let me sit next to you.
Give me the same as him.
Bartender:
Certainly.
Syu:
You’re going to be crushed again like last time.
Hiro:
I’m going to be fine today!
Well then, cheers.
Syu:
Cheers.
Hiro:
So how’s your condition lately?
Syu:
Not bad. The performances are as exciting as usual.
Are you still busy?
There’s rumor on the streets that you got the lead role for a drama.
Hiro:
Thanks to you. Well, just recently I only have one paragraph on each of the drama shooting, but my schedule’s packed with a lot of things now.
Syu:
As expected of Mr. Popular Actor.
Hiro:
…Anyway, there’s also an interesting-looking job coming in.
Syu:
You’re making such a nasty look.
<Shifts to Town>
Director:
Alright, I’ve loaded all the luggage.
Tumblr media
Other Troupe’s Member:
Thank you so much for today.
Sorry to make you do chores like carrying our luggage too.
Director:
It’s fine, you always help us too.
Other Troupe’s Member:
Thank you.
Then, see you again!
Director:
Yes! Thank you for your hard work.
(Alright, I guess I can go home now.)
Igawa:
Director:
Eh? The person walking over there is…
Igawa-san!
Igawa:
Ah, Tachibana-san.
Good afternoon.
Director:
Good afternoon. Are you going back to work now?
Igawa:
Actually, there’s a drama shooting nearby.
It just finished; I’m going to the parking lot to pick up my car now so I can send Tenma-kun back.
Director:
I see. Tenma-kun, does he still have work after this?
Igawa:
No, that’s all for today.
Director:
If that’s the case--
<Short Time Skip>
Tenma:
That Igawa, he’s very slow…
!
Director:
Tenma-kun, I’m here to fetch you!
Tenma:
Director!? Why are you here…
Director:
I happened to be helping an acquaintance nearby.
I had to carry some luggage so I brought the car with me…
When I was about to go back, I bumped into Igawa-san.
We’re going back to the same place anyway, so I thought it would be more efficient for me to send you back instead.
Tenma:
… I see.
Director:
Yep, so climb in.
Tenma:
Well… There’s no other choice.
Listen, I’m going to be in the car with you so make sure you drive safely.
Director:
Of course! Then, let’s go.
<Shifts to Dorm>
Director:
We’re home.
Tenma:
We’re home.
Manager:
Welcome back!
Ah, the two of you are late~
Tenma:
Ha? What do you mean, do we have any appointment today…?
Hiro:
Sorry to disturb you.
Tenma:
!?
<End of Chapter 1>
Director:
Hiro-san!?
Tenma:
Why are you here…
Manager:
Eh? Didn’t I tell you that Hiro-san will be coming?
Director:
Never heard of it!
Manager:
Sorry, most probably I just forgot to tell you~
Director:
Ah! It’s too late to tell me now.
Hiro:
Damn, pull yourself together, Isuke.
Manager:
Well~ It was careless of me.
Excuse me.
Director:
Hiro-san, really sorry to make you wait.
Hiro:
It’s fine, I didn’t wait long so don’t worry.
… Tenma too, it’s been a while.
Tenma:
…Yeah. Hiro-san too, you look great.
Hiro:
Thanks to you.
I came here to request for one thing today.
Director:
A request?
Hiro:
Yeah, actually--
<Shifts to Lounge>
Tsumugi:
A hero show, is it?
Tumblr media
Director:
Yeah, it’s a request from Hiro-san…
This is the flyer that I received.
Tenma:
It’s an event where heroes from generations gather, among the activities, the highlight seems to be an original Sentai Hero stage by Hiro-san.
Tsumugi:
Hee, it’s a 2-class system.
Director:
Then, Hiro-san who will appear as the “Legend” requires supporting actors to strengthen the atmosphere around— thus he requested for actors from MANKAI company to appear as well.
Banri:
I see.
Director:
He’s a famous actor so, we would be able to create some buzz by co-starring in the hero show with Hiro-san who has experience appearing with special effects…
I thought it would be a good opportunity to expand the customer base too, towards the small children and their parents.
Tsumugi:
A hero show… I guess it’s not an impossible request.
Banri:
Why not. It sounds fun too?
Sakuya:
I also agree!
Director:
I’m glad.
Alright then, I want to select the performers for the show, but…
For Tenma-kun, Hiro-san had nominated him so his appearance has already been confirmed. It already passed his agency too.
Banri:
Co-starring with another popular actor huh.
Sakuya:
Similar to that previous drama.
Tenma:
I was a burden during the drama that time.
This time, I’m going to recover my reputation.
But, I’ve never seen a Sentai Hero-related show.
I did appear as a guest in a Rider series before, but…
Banri:
Is there anyone who likes hero stuff here?
I’ll listen in too, seems like an easy thing to do.
Tsumugi:
If that’s the case, there’s someone that I want to recommend…
Director:
?
<Shifts to Living Room>
Director:
So that’s about it, let’s start our meeting for the hero show promptly.
The co-star this time will be the people gathered here, Tenma-kun, Tasuku-san, Masumi-kun, Banri-kun, Omi-kun, Homare-san. These 6 people.
I also have Tsuzuru-kun, who will be in charge of the script, here today.
Tsuzuru:
Pleased to work with you.
Director:
By the way, Tasuku-san really has a very strong recommendation from Tsumugi-san!
Omi:
Recommendation?
Tasuku:
What do you mean by that?
Masumi:
It seems that the actual person doesn’t even know about it.
Banri:
Tasuku-san used to roleplay Sentai Hero with his brother in the past.
Tenma:
Surely, he can lend you his knowledge…  that’s what he said.
Tasuku:
That guy, he’s saying something unnecessary again…
That was so long ago.
It’s true that I used to play like that when I was a kid, but it’s not like I’m actually a Sentai-otaku.
Tumblr media
Tenma:
Is it?
Tasuku:
But I guess, if we’re going to do it, I’m going to do my best to be of help.
Homare:
Oh, so reliable!
I’ll depend on you!
Omi:
So, the script will be written by Tsuzuru.
Tsuzuru:
Yeah. I really liked Sentai Hero when I was small too.
So, I am very happy to be able to write a script for one.
Director:
What kind of story will it be, I’m looking forward to it.
<End of Chapter 2>
Tsuzuru:
If we’re talking about Sentai, I guess it has to be color-coded character right.
Director:
Before you start on the script, why not we discussed it with everyone.
By the way, the management really hopes that Hiro-san will be playing as the legend-role, “White”.
Tasuku:
White? It’s a rare color even in Sentai.
Omi:
Well, maybe they really want to show off the legend feel.
Banri:
If Hiro-san is white, why don’t we have a black one for ours.
Tsuzuru:
That’s true… Since, I’m writing an original script…
Maybe we can turn around the entire colour scheme, we can open up the possibility of everyone having a rare colour.
Director:
I see, that sounds interesting too.
Homare:
Hmm… Then, how about silver?
Tenma:
If that’s the case, the next one will be… gold?
Tasuku:
Don’t just completely ignore the colour concept of Sentai…
Director:
Well well, there’s a chance that we have to wait for Hiro-san’s approval too.
Masumi:
Director:
How about you, Masumi-kun?
Is there a colour you want to be?
Masumi:
How about you?
Director:
Eh?
Masumi:
The colour you want to be is yellow maybe?
Director:
No no, I won’t even make an appearance you know?
Omi:
But why yellow?
Banri:
Normally, it would be pink isn’t it?
Masumi:
Because it’s the curry colour.
Tenma:
It’s like that!
Director:
Curry-coloured yellow warrior…!
That sounds great!
Tsuzuru:
So, you’re not really against the idea.
Tasuku:
Don’t be happy because of that.
<Short Time Skip>
Director:
Alright, then I guess we decided on the colour scheme and the individual colours for now.
So for the arrangement, Tenma-kun will be Red…
Omi:
Black is Tasuku-san, Gold is Banri, Silver is Homare-san.
Homare:
Then, the enemy boss character will be Omi-kun, and the boss underling will be Masumi-kun.
Tasuku:
Really, I don’t understand this colour scheme at all.
Tsuzuru:
I said it myself but, I guess we really ended up changing the colours a lot.
Tenma:
Will it become a problem for the script?
Tsuzuru:
I think it should not be a problem, I feel that I should be able to get an approval from the management side and Hyuuga-san.
Director:
Well, anyway if they reject the idea we can always rethink it, it’s going to be fine!
Banri:
Director-chan, your positivity is a mystery.
Masumi:
I like that side of yours too…
<Shifts to Lesson Room>
Hiro:
Then, let’s start our practice.
Banri:
Yes.
Omi:
Pleased to work with you.
Director:
(Anyway… For them to leave the character colours as they are.
I didn’t expect everything to go that smoothly, I’m a bit wary now…)
Hiro:
Tenma, you should move a bit more forward here.
The gesture too, it’s fine to make a bigger movement.
Tenma:
Understood. Like this?
Hiro:
Yeah, right. I’ll be your action opponent, so let’s try that line again from the beginning.
Then, following this line--
Director:
(There’s also the fact that Tenma-kun will be playing Red, but Hiro-san seemed to be very passionate about his instruction.
This exchange between the previous and current leader…
Somehow, I feel the warmth in my chest.)
Hiro:
Let’s end here for today.
Tasuku:
Thank you very much.
Homare:
Good work today.
Director:
Hiro-san, so how’s everything?
Hiro:
As for the current situation, it’s not particularly good, but it’s not bad either.
I think everyone will get better with more practice, but…
Rather than me teaching how to do it, there’s a quicker method to learn.
Director:
?
<End of Chapter 3>
Masumi:
…Is this the theatre?
Tumblr media
Banri:
Seems so.
Omi:
But, Hiro-san’s method to quickly learn ends up being experiencing the actual hero show performance.
Tasuku:
It’s true that it’s easier to see the image and feel the atmosphere around, it seems that there’s going to be a lot to learn.
Director:
Hiro-san couldn’t come because he has another job, but it seemed that he had talked directly with the theatre.
It’s going to be the theatre where we will do our actual event performance so it will serve as venue tour as well.
Tenma:
I see.
Director:
Since Hiro-san has made all the arrangements for us, let’s try to enjoy today!
<Shifts to Stage>
Homare:
The seats are… over here.
Tumblr media
Director:
I’m getting really excited now~
Tenma:
Well, who actually enjoyed a show more than Director.
Banri:
The tension’s really rising up.
Director:
Ahaha, it really feels like I’m back to my childhood.
This kind of nostalgic thing has such a lighthearted feel to it.
Masumi:
That side of you is very cute too.
Omi:
It seems that the Hero will be passing by this aisle later to give high five to everyone.
Tasuku:
Hee…
Tenma:
Oh, it’s starting.
<Stage lights up>
Monster:
So impudent…!
But, how about this! Haaaa!
Tumblr media
Blue:
What!? Th, this technique is…!
Green:
Ugh… Arrrghhhhh!
Child A:
Blue! Green!!
Child B:
Hang in there!
Monster:
Hahahahaha! How’s that!
Red:
We’re going to be wiped out this way…
Everyone! Please lend us, Wolf Ranger, your power!
Children:
Go!!
<Shifts to Theatre Outdoor>
Director:
Haa, that was fun~!
Tasuku:
It’s worth seeing.
Masumi:
You look cute when you’re enjoying yourself.
Homare:
Me too, I managed to high five the hero!
Omi:
The action was great too.
Director:
I’m glad that we’re able to understand the hero show atmosphere better too.
We should be able to progress with practice this way!
Banri:
Eh, by the way, where’s Tenma?
Homare:
Oh? I thought he was beside me just a while ago.
Tasuku:
He’s missing.
Director:
Maybe, he’s lost…?
Masumi:
Usually, you can’t do that in such a short amount of time.
Banri:
Damn, he never change.
I’ll just contact him using LIME in the meantime.
Tasuku:
I’ll look around while I buy some drinks.
Banri:
Ah, then I’ll get coffee.
Masumi:
Water.
Homare:
Straight tea please.
Tasuku:
Geez…
<Short Time Skip>
Tasuku:
…I guess that’s it for the drinks.
(But really, where did Sumeragi go.)
*bump*
!?
Small Child:
Tasuku:
(I thought I bumped into something with my leg, but… a child?)
Small Child:
Uh…
Tasuku:
(A person who looks like his mom around here… doesn’t seem to exist.
This is maybe…)
…What happened? Where’s your mom?
Small Child:
She’s gone… She went somewhere…
Tasuku:
(As I thought… A lost child huh.)
Small Child:
Mom… Sniff…
Tasuku:
…Don’t cry. You’re a boy right?
We can look for her together.
Small Child:
Big brother… Thank you.
<End of Chapter 4>
Tasuku:
What’s your name?
Shouta:
…Shouta.
Tasuku:
Shouta, I see.
Shouta:
How about big brother…?
Tasuku:
It’s Tasuku.
Shouta:
Big brother Tasuku…
Tasuku:
…Hey.
Shouta:
?
Tasuku:
You’re going to be lost again.
Your hand, give it to me.
Shouta:
…Yeah!
Tasuku:
First of all, I guess I have to get back to those guys.
Shouta:
Tasuku:
(This kind of thing, if it’s Tsumugi he would do it much better than me…
I can’t get used to kids and I don’t know how to handle them.)
(I didn’t realize it before but… That thing Shouta’s wearing on his clothes, is it a can badge? Also, I think that’s…)
That can badge, it’s Wolf Ranger right.
Shouta:
…Big brother, you know about it?
Tasuku:
I guess.
I just finished watching the show earlier.
Shouta:
Me too!
Wolf Ranger, they’re so cool!
Wolf Ranger you know, they’re so strong.
Even when the monster appeared, he will blow them away with his Super Kick!
Tasuku:
Ah, the jump kick, it was cool.
Shouta:
Yes! Then when the ranger awakened his power, he will enter Hyper Mode!
Tasuku:
Ah… There’s that too.
Tenma:
Damn… Where did those guys go…
Tasuku:
!
Oi, Sumeragi.
Tenma:
Tasuku-san! So you’re here.
I wonder where you went.
Tasuku:
That’s supposed to be my line isn’t it.
Tenma:
Uh… I, I was just distracted by the poster a bit.
Shouta:
Tenma:
Hmm? This kid is…
Tasuku:
He’s the same as you. A lost child.
For the time being, let’s just go and join the others.
Tenma:
I, I wasn’t lost at all!
<Short Time Skip>
Banri:
Oh, Tasuku-san is back.
Homare:
Oh, it seems that Tenma-kun is with him too.
Director:
I’m glad! You can join us again safely… Eh, that, who’s that child?
Shouta:
Tasuku:
I met him on the way. He seemed to be lost.
Omi:
I see.
Masumi:
…Isn’t it fine if we just bring him to the lost child center.
Homare:
You’re right.
Shouta:
I… I want to be with big brother Tasuku.
Banri:
Hee, he seemed to want to stick with Tasuku-san.
Director:
He seemed so attached to you already.
You really get along well for such a short period of time~
Homare:
A combination of Tasuku and a small child, it’s such a fresh view.
Masumi:
…You’ll be mistaken as a kidnapper.
Tasuku:
Oi, who is.
Omi:
If that’s the case, maybe it’s better for us to look for this child’s mother.
Director:
You’re right. For the time being, let’s try to call the lost child center…
Mother:
…Shouta!
Shouta:
Ah! Mom!
Tasuku:
!
Mother:
I’m glad…!
Homare:
Oh, it seems to be Shouta-kun’s mother.
Omi:
It’s great that they find each other quickly.
Mother:
I’m sorry for the inconvenience…
Shouta:
Those big brothers stayed with me!
Mother:
I see, you’re right.
Thank you so much, really.
Tasuku:
It’s nothing, I’m glad that you can safely meet each other again.
Mother:
Hey, Shouta, you should say your gratitude too.
Shouta:
Big brother, big sister… Thank you.
Big brother Tasuku too…
Let’s talk about Wolf Ranger again?
Tasuku:
Yeah, of course.
Homare:
Oh, Shouta-kun likes hero is it.
Mother:
Yeah. He often founds himself walking towards different hero shows, he’s a big fan…
Director:
If that’s the case..!
Excuse me, if you would like to, please take this flyer!
Mother:
A hero show event…
It will be held in this venue right.
Director:
Yeah! Actually, we are members from a theatre group called MANKAI company.
We will be making an appearance for the hero show in the upcoming event.
If it’s possible, please come along to watch with Shouta-kun.
Mother:
Thank you so much..!
Shouta-kun will be really delighted too, I’m sure he would want to visit.
So, everyone over here are members of the theatre troupe.
Tenma:
You’re right.
Mother:
…Huh, eh!?
Are you possibly, Sumeragi Tenma-kun!?
Tenma:
Nice to meet you.
Mother:
I didn’t realize at all…!
Banri:
Well, if you suddenly see a famous actor right in front of your eyes, of course you’ll be surprised.

TOP 10 FAVORITE SUPERHEROES
THANKS FOR TAGGING ME: @superkingofpriderock
Tumblr media
01. OGON BATTO (ALSO KNOWN AS: OGON BAT, GOLDEN BAT, FANTASMAGÓRICO, FANTOMAS AND FANTAMAN)
Originated in the medium of kamishibai (japanese street paper theater) in 1931, and later having expanded to the mediums of three live actions movies and one anime series in the 50s and 60s, Ogon Batto is a supersheroe created by Suzuki Ishiro and Takeo Nagamatsu. A being from ancient Atlantis who was sent forward in time 10,000 years to battle evil forces threatening the present day, he lives in a fortress in the Japanese Alps. His superpowers include superhuman strength, invulnerability, and the ability to fly, and his weak spot is dehidration.  Ogon Batto has an evil counterpart known as Kurayami Bat (暗闇バット "Dark Bat") and his main enemy is Dr. Erich Nazō (ナゾー), the leader of a crime syndicate bent on world domination, who wears a black costume and mask with bat-like ears, a red eye and a blue eye. To some of the brazilian audiences, he is kown with the name Fantomas, trough the 1960s dubbed anime series.
Tumblr media
02. THE WONDER TWINS
Characters created for the cartoon Super Friends by the creative team of Hannah-Barbera, the twin brothers Zan and Jayna’s dinamic worked like this: They would punch each other’s hands, fusing the rings they used, and say “Wonder Twins: Activate”! So, Zan would take the form of anything water related (vapours, ice, etc.) while Jayna would take the form of an animal. The reason they are on the list? If you say “Super Gêmeos: Ativar” (portuguese for Wonder Twins: Activate) to anyone who was a child in Brazil during the late 1990 and early 2000s, we will know what are you talking about, and sweet childhood nostalgia will manifest.
Tumblr media
03. EL CHAPULIN COLORADO
Remember the mexican actor dressed up as a bee in The Simpsons? Yup, he is a parody of this little fella. Writen and acted by the comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños in the 1970s to be a superheroe that represented the latin american audiences, El Chapulin Colorado is a guy who, despite being very bumbling and frightfull, always appear offering the services of his shrinking pills, his vinyll little antennas, his bionical hammer, a book containing a story that he feels has a relevant moral and his friendship to anyone who is in need and says the phrase: “Oh! Quién Podrá Defenderme” (Oh! Who Can Defend Me).
Tumblr media
04. STATIC SHOCK
Virgil Hawkins is a fourteen-year-old honors student at Dakota Union High School who gains his powers by a mutagenic gas explosion, dubbed "the Big Bang" by the media, which grants numerous residents of Dakota superpowers; those affected are likewise dubbed "Bang Babies". Virgil lives with his widowed father Robert Hawkins, a social worker and the head of the Freeman Community Center, and his sister Sharon Hawkins, a university student and hospital volunteer. His mother Jean Hawkins died a few years prior, the victim of a stray bullet while she worked as a paramedic during a riot; her death causes Virgil to develop an intense fear/hatred of guns. This guy deserves his movie, Hollywood!
Tumblr media
05. ASTÉRIX AND OBÉLIX
Created by the team of french comic artists René Goscinny and Alberto Uderzo, Astérix and Obélix are the two greatest warriors from a undomitable village of celtic gauls, who resist the invasion of the romans led by Julius Caesar with the help of a powerfull  magic potion made by the druid Getafix. Astérix is the little man, whose greatest strenght is on his inteligence, cunning and witty. Obélix is the big man, gentle and innocent, who wants nothing in life but to eat delicious wild boars, find the love of a good lady and punch some romans in the face. The dwo has been around not only in comics, but also in animated and live action movies, and show no sign of slowing down and stopping to have adventures. They even have their own theme park in Paris!
Tumblr media
06. JUSPION (ALSO KNOWN AS JASPION)
Kyojuu Tokusou Juspion ("Megabeast Investigator Juspion") is the fourth in the Metal Heroes series of Tokusatsu shows. The series revolves around space orphan Juspion and his eccentric android assistant Anri, who are sent by old wizard/scientist Ejin to destroy Satangorth and his army of Megabeasts (kyojuu), as prophesied in The Galaxy Bible. He has a giant robot at his disposal and is followed around by Team Pet Miya. While it was a success in it’s native Japan, when it was broadcast here in Brazil in the 1980s, it got extremely popular, being a mark in the surgence of geeks for japanese pop culture in the country.
Tumblr media
07.  JIRAIYA
Sekai Ninja Sen Jiraiya ("World Ninja War Jiraiya"), also known as Ninja Olympiad, is the seventh Metal Heroes series.  Jiraiya (real name:Tōha Yamaji) is an elite ninja warrior from the Togakure style of Ninpō. His mentor and foster father Tetsuzan Yamaji, the 34th Grandmaster of the Togakure School, has trained him for the day the ancient Yōma Clan will return. Sure enough, the clan, led by Oninin Dokusai, arise with their army of evildoers in order to seize Pako, a mysterious treasure which came from outer space over 2000 years ago which is said to have power equiparable to the Sun. With the help of his family, and an army of international ninja heroes, Jiraiya must stand tall against the evil ones. If Juspion started the phenomenon of interest in japanese Tokusatsu heroes on brazilian audiences, Jiraiya consolidated it. To the point that “Virado no Jiraiya” (Turned into Jiraiya) has become a popular brazilian, meaning that someone is mad at something. The fact that his actor Takumi Tsutsui constantly comes to visit Brazil also helps a lot in the popularity of the character.

08. THE CHANGEMAN
Dengeki Sentai Changeman (Blitzkrieg Squadron Changeman) is the ninth Super Sentai series, running from 1985 to 1986. In order to save the world from threat of invasion by the Great Star League Gozma, a special force called the Earth Defense Force is set up. One day, the Gozma launch an attack on them and have them on the ropes. That is, until the Earth itself grants five officers the power of the Earth Force, which lets them become the Changemen. Before the Power Rangers came to dominate the world’s pop culture, there four five Super Sentai that received a brazilian-portuguese dub and broadcast: Changeman, Flashman, Google-V and Maskman. Changeman was the first, and is my number one favorite.

10. ZORRO
Really, that mark says everything. Is freaking Zorro! He is one of the reasons the superheroe genre is what it is and is what we know. Without him, probably a lot of those guys wouldn’t have existed.

OK KO Reviews: Back In Red Action
Tumblr media
As you can probably tell by the fact Red Action week started 4 days ago my schedule slipped a bit, with a bunch of unexpected stuff, an expected job for a friend, and a day of laziness with the isle of armor meant I never got around to writing it. As such i’ve decided to play catchup.. all 3 reviews, HOPEFULLY all in one day. And yes 3 as I decided to cut Plaza Prom for a number of reasons: It’s not all that necessary, I was doing it more for myself, and if I find time before or after pride ends, I can easily cover it in isolation, so being done in a timely manner isn’t an issue like it is for the red action ones, or the other three pride month reviews I have planned after red action week. So witht hat dust settled let’s talk about Enid.  While I went on about Enid a LOT last time, for good reason, a LOT has happened since episode 3 as you’d probably guess, episodes I will cover in the future because enid is awesoeme. And the two episodes that built her up a bit had plaza prom as the creamy filling for that airing sandwitch, and were unsuprisingly good. But since we’re not covering them just yet Enid confronted her ex best friend and dealt with her and rad’s bumpy past, and that coupled with our previous episodes and some others have melted down her walls a bit. She’s still a bit distant, and still terrible at her job as ever, but she’s grown as a person and grown past her past. Now it’s her turn to do what K.O. has done for her, he was inttrumental in getting her to stop ignoring Elodie and confront her, for someone else. Let’s recap this.  back in red action under the cut...
We open with a normal day at the Plaza and Enid’s alone, with K.O. offscreen and Rad not in this episode so he’s not around and Gar clearly gone or else he’d be yelling at enid probably.  Enid’s checking around on her phone and after checking to see if anyone’s there, once again decides to look at Red’s social because that’s not creepy. But Enid browses it wondering why Red came here in the first place, figuring there’s probably better food, better this , better that and trips up on a picture of Red with her old girlfriend, Yellow Technique.. and yeah i’m not beating around the bush, while they never come right out and SAY IT, the episode contextualizes things as such. I Mean granted given my shipping habits on this blog, you can see i’m willing to ship plenty of kids together, and even then only in a “Awww” holding hands, maybe an awkard kiss way, and am a shipping monster who has plenty, but here i have no horse in this race, it’s just really obvious subtext.
Anyways enough Cul De Sacs, Enid sees a new picture... Red taking a selfie with an unaware Enid.. and who probably just heard Enid’s last few sentences and at the very least dosen’t care. After a flirty “Hey Ya” and enid awkardly hiding her phone, Red buys some gum for cover then invites Enid to hang out for the afternoon then leaves.  Then KO pops up out of nowhere hilariously, and for his only scene this episode to gush about Enid’s sorta date, though Enid is paranoid it’s just a setup for some sorta joke or prank.. which given that red was willing to set a child on fire while her friend spanked him because that’s not weird at all, yeah kinda a good point, even if she’s ignoring the obvious signals that, for once, Red seems to be genuine. She WAS a bit awkward at times during asking her out, pausing or stammering, she just quickly recovered. But it also shows the downside, if breifly to red’s kind of life: If your an ass to everybody, even people who genuinely like you may worry your just messing with them.
But when Enid goes to return the gum, she finds Red not only waiting but ninja snatching the gum.. and doing that to a NINJA takes skill. Top notch. Enid realizing this isn’t a prank holy fuck her crush really did ask her out out of nowhere, suggests a few things before Red shoots them down gently and revealz their going crusing. She also has enid turn her back and cover her ears while she summons her submarine.. using a sentai/power rangers set of poses and summon chant, as you do.  With their ride here and enid buckeled into Red’s Submarine, and Red dodging any questions Enid has about her past , you know, the oppsitie of normal first date behavior. Everyone knows your supposed to talk a lot, get them coffee, look deep in her eyes and tell her about your family, hold hands then shoot cocaine into your eyes and rock a buglarly.
But no instead of any of that Red has something just as romantic and dangerous planned their going high into the...
Tumblr media
Which, befiting this wonderful show, is an actual place that’s full of explosions, maurading gangs and dinosaurs.. I mean every place is full of dinosaurs but this place has extra dinosaurs. It’s like the savage land if it didn’t annoy me as a setting. So the two cruise on exotica style, though in a great bit Red keeps enid from unbuckling, and when asked about her past again Red dodges and instead takes them down thunder road, where the lightining strikes.... I.. I can’t stop waxing lyircal this review. Help.  On thunder road the two share a moment when both go up top and see how damn pretty the place is, what with all the glowing orbs, Red gets electrocuted and both look at each other lovingly at diffrent points with that faded light effect, you know the one. I”d name it jeremy but it definitely has a name. The two really bond and it’s telling that it’s those moments where things go well: Enid’s not nervously trying to ask first date questions, if not wrongfully and Red isn’t running from them. Their just two teenagers attracted to one another getting to know you getting to know all about you.. getting to know if you like me.  Anyways, enough of my nonsense that’s now clearly a medical condition, Red’s old friends show up to spoil the mood, with Red brushing them off as performance artists, and a chase insues.. and it’s really well done. I’ll get into this more in a minute. The two max max race, Enid gets into the cockpit and makes good use of it as it’s just like shooting womp rats back home. With help from red, they manage to get two of the hue troop cars to collide and the two hide behind a sign despite it telling them not to back to the future style. It’s here we get into the heart of the episode and what makes it really work for me: For most of the season, before and though not as often after this, Enid’s been standofish even to people she cares about, blunt and hard to get to open up. But the two incidents I mentoined last time that caused her to harden her heart and swallow her tears... got some closure in thos enidcentric eps. IN short Elodie returned and Enid tried to act like it didn’t bother her and Elodie throwing their relationship away like hot garbage for her own admitssion into point and then came back smug as ever, but KO once again got through to her and convinced her that she needed to face her and in a stunning action sequence, i’ll gush about it more when I review the episode eventually she whalloped her and got closure, even if Elodie was ssitll super popular. She then patched things up with rad after Cupid showed up to force her and rad on a date to deal with their sexual tension since Rad went on one with her in middle school that went terribly because rad listend to his friends and his friends are obnoxious piles of toxic masculinty who sucked and were not unsuprisngly phased out of most of season 2 aside from the one episode they were needed and only showed up in season 3 for rad to tell them off. It went poorly, Enid nearly died and Rad saved her and apologized for being a dick, taking the two from would be exes who are understandibly bitter to best friends at long last.
Tumblr media
So Enid’s healed some of her wounds.. sure she’s still standoffish.. but she’s finally opening up and letting the right ones in. And now it’s Red’s turn. Red has the same problem: She dosen’t hide but she does run or scream at issues, and as someone who tends to be quick to anger I totally understand that, a tendency to lash out due to some other thing bothering you even when the person did nothing wrong. But her crush, and now possible relationship with, Enid gets Red to finally stop dodging Enid’s questions and open up and we get Red, and her friends Backstory Red and Friends are The Hue Troop, a group of warriors founded by a woman who long ago found a powerful prisim that linked to the mysterious Zordon-like alien Ren-Bow, a precog who could sense oncoming disasters and thus empowered the woman and her 4 friends with attitude to  stop them. Like Minority Report meets Power Rangers but the Minioirty Report part actually works. And like civil war 2 if the leaders of both factions weren’t douchebags especially you Carol. But given the fight is eternal they pased their powers on generation after generation , and it was Red and co’s turn. But Red chafed at being part of a team, wearing uniforms, following orders from a rock, doing sily poses, which came to a boil when she accidently, truly accidently broke the Prisim and rather than face up to what she’d done, ran for it and thus ended up here, hiding from her past in the past.  It’s also revealed Enid’s one way crush on her is not one way. Red had also been stalking HER social media, like Enid too intimidated to make a move before now, though we DO have an explination for what changed things coming. She liked how unlike Red enid had her own style, moves and a disregard for authority. it also frankly explains a lot about Red.  spent her whole life probably, given we see what could be a kid version of red or red’s mom in the finale, preparing to be a hue trooper, given the whole generational thing i’m theorizing the Hue Troop we see are the kids of either the first gen hue troop or the second, the flashback also supporting this. Her whole life being what other people told her to be, following orders doing poses.. not being her own woman. So when being forced to turn fugitive meant she had to hide, it also meant she was free to do what she want, and went about it in the worst way: being rude to people and lashing out at them because she could, only spearing the girl she found cute and her two friends, who went along with the beahavior likely due to both liking red and being deeply insecure themselves as we saw last time, from her obnoxiousness. Even if it wasn’t a generational thing, I still supset the pressure of having to be part of a regimented group drained her and rather than talk about it she likely just avoided it like she tends to do.. and like ENID tends to do.. So it’s says something for Enid’s own development when she encourages Red, who also asked her out since Red figured shed idn’t have much time left, to STOP RUNNING and face her problems.. and punch them in the face.
Yellow shows up right as Red agrees, and a fight breaks out.. and a damn good one. I put a pin in this earlier, but the shows battle scenes, vechicalr and man to mand, are utterly gorgeous, well coregraphed and part of why I belive the animation style is so simplified. Besides allowing for the necessarily unique background cast, it also means that when it’s time for an action scene they can go balls out and give it everything without the episodes taking as long as say steven universe or a disney show. And it shows as even this brief fight is tense, well done and full of emotion as Red’s ex and her former friends fight Red and her new girlfriend with both sides having every reason to go at it. It’s crimnally cut short when a metor hits.. the same metor delivers the crystal. While the rest of the Hue Troop instantly realize this and run, Red dosen’t because it was in the distant past.. and in a great move Enid has to tell her dumbass girlfriend that they ARE in HER past. They run, Red is hit and we get the cover image for the shippers and to make it CRYSTAL CLEAR that yes this was a date. They didn’t steal a few picassos while on a sexy date heist but still.
Also  Red stole the crystal, and her friends assume it was her plan all along. Red almost takes credit for it.. but a glare from Enid shoots that plan down and Red, once again genuinely opens up, apologizing for running from them and her problems, and implicitly hurting Yellow, as while they clearly aren’t together anymore, either due to this or other shenanigans, it still had to hurt what red did. She also thanks Enid for being the one to show her the error of her ways. that being said with a fresh prisim, it’s just as likely that the Hue Troop can now clone it and get a copy back to the past for Red to be her own grandma, as I theroize given the finale again and all and red still being around.. more on that nexttime, the troop have a working prisim till then. They part as friends with the rest of the troop encoourging enid to visit sometime and Yellow giving her approval and getting her own closure as the troop leaves.  And so we end as Red and Enid decide to resume their everything but saying it’s a date date and go Lava Surfing as they drive out into the sunset. THE END.
Final Thoughts: Just as good on rewatch as the first time around and a great ep, not just for the LBGTQ rep, as while I belivie we’ve seen a bi flag sticker on enid’s bike helmet at this point, and would in all future appearances of it and she’d later stick one on her flying motorcycle she gets in the last season, and there was subetext with elody and red and text with rad, this showed she was a bisexual beyond any shadow of a doubt and did everything short of having them kiss, that comes later, to confirm it. But besides being one of the series delightfully gayest episodes, it has good story, good charcter progression for enid as we see how far she’s come from those early episodes, and Red gets a good character arc that both explains her past actions and has her grows as a person. And we’ll see more of this next time as we hit 88 miles per hour and Red Action to the Future. Until then, follow for more reviews of animated shows, check my blog for more as I have pages for each show, and hit me up iwth an ask if you have a show you’d like me to review or force me to review it for 2 bucks by asking for a commission!

Kakuranger NinjaRed Sasuke (サスケ, Sasuke) / NinjaRed (ニンジャレッド, Ninjareddo) Sasuke is 26 years old and a descendant of Sarutobi Sasuke. The most agile member of the team. He is a reckless young man who's hot to go out and drag the others into the enemy battle. He screws up many times. However, he doesn't reflect on his errors and is good-hearted and loyal. No matter how great the enemy, he won't budge. He likes fireworks.
Kakuranger NinjaWhite Tsuruhime (鶴姫, Tsuruhime) / NinjaWhite (ニンジャホワイト, Ninjahowaito) Tsuruhime is 14 years old and the first female leader of a Sentai. The twenty-fourth protector of the Seal Door, Tsuruhime is a strong girl who is looking for her missing father, Hakumenrou. She has greater leadership skills than Sasuke. She once fought alongside two other girls, Yukiyo & Tsukiyo, as one of the 'Punishment Sisters'.
Kakuranger NinjaBlue Saizou (サイゾウ, Saizō) / NinjaBlue (ニンジャブルー, Ninjaburū) Saizou is a descendant of Kirigakure Saizo. 22 years old, a constantly chattering, easily flattered man who thinks he's a lot smarter than he really is. Likes to help other people making him popular among children. Somehow unlucky in most things. His way of talking is a little feminine.
Kakuranger NinjaYellow Seikai (セイカイ, Seikai) / NinjaYellow (ニンジャイエロー, Ninjaierō) Seikai is 24 years old and a descendant of Miyoshi Seikai. Seikai likes video games. He refuses to battle at the beginning but when he saw Rokurokubi steal children, he decides to battle. He is driven by desire and dash for food, sleep, and women. He is indecisive, but has unusual strength from his ancestor.
Kakuranger NinjaBlack Jiraiya (ジライヤ, Jiraiya) / NinjaBlack (ニンジャブラック, Ninjaburakku) Jiraiya is a descendant of Jiraiya. 20 years old, he is a Japanese-American ninja from Los Angeles trained by his guardian Gali after his father was killed. Jiraiya stands out among the characters because he speaks English frequently (which at first caused both teasing and confusion with the other team members when he speaks in English), his native language, but he learns Japanese as the show progresses. During his first appearance, he was helping the Yokai. In reality, he did so to steal the other four scrolls, stolen by Azukiarai, to allow him and the other three Kakurangers (besides Sasuke, who already had his) to become Juushou. He is stereotyped with a combination of a cowboy/surfer persona. He is the pure fighter of the group although he knows Earth based ninja arts, he prefers to fight utilizing his martial art skills. While finding his Shinobi Scroll, Jiraiya was forced to battle Gali, who revealed himself as the man who killed his father and serving the Yokai. After the bloody battle between them, Jiraiya learned why Gali did it, as well as hoping Jiraiya would kill him had intended. Both the deaths of Zashiki-warashi and the two men he had knew since childhood gave Jiraiya reason to fight the Youkai.
