fig faeth albums and why:
burn towns get money (single): only song that makes sense to have been created before sophomore year
significant figures (album): right after they get home from spring break. fig had all of those cooking i swear
their ep (EP): max casson’s spring break: i believe in you! playlist. while fabian’s dumping all of his gold in the finale part 2 fig says she has an ep in the works and i want to believe it’s this one. the title’s a double meaning: it’s for the bad kids but it also sounds like therapy so :D
walk through hell (album): in spring break part 2 lola talks about the archdevil tour and i’m choosing to believe it’s this one. there’s a lot of fire symbolism and phoenix stuff and fig going hey we’re a bit more traumatized, but they drag fabian and/or riz onstage for at least 1 concert and that’s where fig gets the idea for
significant figures 2.0 (album): BOP. BELOVED IT’S SO GREAT. they drag everyone to come sing their songs to at least one concert. fig sings hey kid disguised as Kalina and riz is sufficiently creeped out. it’s great.
titles (album): my beloved i will summon you into existence. i choose to believe until proven otherwise the night yorb is like. not as big a threat as it seems (think a lighter vokodo from critical role. not great but not bad) and they clear it out by winter break. the album gets released the day after fig’s birthday.

Mixed feelings about this, not sure about how the wording looks or the actual emotion it conveys, but I think the drawing itself still ended up pretty cool looking

I feel like your music (and rock in general) isn't really analyzed on a critical level. Like most people really only analyze classical or jazz, on a good day (depending on how you look at it) some really popular pop songs, but that's mostly just to hate on how simple it is.
I really do wish people thought about rock more. It's kind of a vague title, but I feel like TMBG has a specific vibe. If I knew anything about music theory i'd analyze it. It's cool. That's the post, really. I wish people thought about your music on a deeper level!
I hear what you are saying but I don't know if I want to go back to the good old days. Just being able to hear recorded music has gone from a very restricted experience to an effortless one, and that has pulled the rug out from under the basic utility of criticism.
There was a short run when critic would try to explain the East Village scene in general (music and visual art) when they talked about our albums, but that was short lived... and I'm not even sure how much sense those conversations made.
So much of rock music magazines were filled with angry rock dudes thoughtfully explaining how little they were interested in Blondie, or Joni Mitchell or the Carpenters when they could have just written "I don't like women right now" and be done with it.

welcome to swiftie tumblr here’s a style guide
are you afraid of people making judgements about the way your profile looks but you don't know enough about tumblr to tell what people might judge you about? then this post is for you!
this is mostly gonna apply to specifically swiftie tumblr, and even then like. you’re totally free to present yourself however you want, but these are just the dominant cultural norms
URLS
album and song titles are the most sought after
lyrics are also very popular (the shorter the better)
dashes are considered a bit cringe but slight misspellings or adding an s to words are fine
adding your name to your url will make people go 🫵 twitter user 🫵
PROFILE PICTURES
you should have a pfp chosen before you start following people, otherwise people will go “oh fuck a bot” and automatically block you
pictures of yourself will also make people go 🫵 twitter user 🫵
gradient/one color backgrounds behind a picture of taylor are still very common, but plain pictures of taylor are also a vibe
if they have that one particular pale pink-ish with a bit of grain filter people will go 🫵 twitter user 🫵
displaying your pfp in a circle format on your mobile theme is more common but if you have it square people won’t judge you
BACKGROUND IMAGES
there’s lots of acceptable ways to do this but something unique to tumblr is playing with the border between the background and the rest of your blog
a few years ago it was super popular to add a ripped paper effect to the bottom, and that’s still hanging on
a curved border (either a wave or a bowl shape) is also fairly common
making the picture smaller than the borders has started to gain traction (i started noticing it becoming popular like, mid pandemic)
hiding the pfp from your mobile theme to make your background flow more is super common but the color schemes should still compliment each other
MOBILE THEME
you can use this handy dandy tool to make your background/text color match a color in your background/pfp
i’d say white or black backgrounds are still the most common but i’ve found the colored background with white text to be making a strong comeback
there’s not a ton of judgement about this, as long as it all matches
BLOG TITLE
blog titles can really be whatever but in general keep it short (less that one row)
a short lyric, a word, or an emoji are the most common options
DESCRIPTION
i’ve found getting on a computer and going to yoururl.tumblr.com and clicking on the little painting thing on the top right corner to be the best way to edit text but the mobile app works fine too (unless you’re adding links then you have to go on a computer)
in general 2-3 rows are the most common, and ideally it’s not just one big wall of text
general format is name (this is where you link your caard/about page) / age/age range / pronouns in the top row and a (short) lyric you like in the bottom
another popular format is everything being a lyric and adding links to stuff on important words
if you like to make edits/art/some other type of original content feel free to add a link in your description
you can add links (again only on desktop) like this
MISC BLOG SETUP STUFF
if your likes/following are visible (especially if both are visible) people will go 🫵 twitter user 🫵
some people show their most popular posts, some people don’t, to my knowledge there’s no judgement either way
your pinned post can be whatever you want it to be but it’s super common to have it be a short about/navigation page
most people have a tag they use for personal posts (“name speaks/rambles/etc” is probably the most common) but you don’t have to if you don’t want to
INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER PEOPLE
follow for follows are not super common. it happens (if you follow someone people it’s common for that person to check out your blog but not in any way a guarantee) but for the most part being tumblr mutuals is a higher bar to clear than “oh this person follows me.” if you want to get peoples attention i would recommend this method, but even then the person can chose not to follow you without it being an insult to your character
blocking is more common than it is on twitter and not an insult to your character. repeatedly starting shit with other people will cause your followers to block you. if you want to start a fight with someone just block them instead
feel free to reblog old posts and spam like
while the mechanics and terminology are very similar, in terms of the way they are perceived a tumblr like is not equal to a twitter like, a tumblr reply is not equal to a twitter reply, and a reblog is not equivalent to retweet
likes are generally utilized as a little hello or bookmarks
reblogs are closer to twitter likes than anything else
replies have a fairly unique function in tumblr interactions but i think the closest way to describe it is like a semi-public dm to the op— chances are no one else is going to see it but the op (except if you replied through a reblog, then the reblogger will see it, but the reblogger will still likely read your reply as intended for the op)
if you have a comment put it in the tags. you know those old screenshots of tumblr posts that have a million “oh my god this is so funny”s breaking up the content of the post? that’s widely considered not only cringe but a bit rude now, please don't do that
if you like someone’s tags, reblog from them and say “prev tags”. every few weeks you’ll see someone from a different corner of tumblr say “prev tags is dead!” but on swiftie tumblr prev tags has never died and doesn’t show signs of dying in the near future
@-ing taylor in a post (edit: unless it’s a joke, @-ing taylor as a joke is very funny feel free to do that) will make people go 🫵 twitter user 🫵
again you can present yourself however you want, tumblr is the home of cringe, these are just the dominant cultural norms that i’ve noticed on swiftie tumblr specifically

Hearing about your vinyl stuff is so cool! How often do you buy records (and if you feel like sharing, what was the last one you purchased)?
i should be regarded as a cautionary tale because i cannot physically enter a record store without buying something it is a legitimate problem and close to 1000+ records later here we are; given i am at my favorite local shop for my sets on sundays i buy records at minimum once a week plus whenever my impulse control loses out and i end up ordering stuff online. i just bought a bunch of records on sale from light in the attic (HIGHLY recommended label they always have cool obscure releases and repressings) but here are the four i picked up this past sunday:
Tumblr media
the 5th dimension, living together, growing together i love the 5th dimension and am slowly collecting all of their albums; the shop had a sealed copy for three bucks that i'd been looking at for a few weeks so i picked it up! a fun late career release, one highlight is their version of "day by day" from godspell which is very fun
Tumblr media
laura nyro, season of lights…laura nyro in concert everything laura nyro every touched is gold and this album is no exception. i love hearing her perform live—especially the tender more introspective version of "sweet blindness" captured hereand highly recommend this album for rainy day listening
Tumblr media
four tops, keeper of the castle i didn't know anything about this album besides the title track and the fact that "ain't no woman (like the one i got)" are on it and i embarrassingly had no four tops albums before picking this up so i'm delighted to have this in my collection! funnily enough of the sixties R&B motown groups like the temptations, four tops, the shirelles, the supremes, etc. i tend to like their early seventies soul-influenced albums more than either their earlier sound. solid listening all around!
Tumblr media
jack bruce, songs for a tailor i knew nothing about this album either—i knew who jack bruce was given he was the most normal member of cream—but found it while digging in the new arrivals section of the shop! i was pleasantly surprised with how much i dug the art/jazz-rock, almost proggy-funk vibe of this album ("sunshine of your love" this is certainly not LOL) and this is quickly becoming one of my favorite random finds of late ("never tell your mother she's out of tune" is very fun—and ellen mcilwaine does a cool cover too)!
folks are always welcome to friend me on discogs to keep up with my vinyl adventures + mutuals can ask for my insta!

And UY's third cour's final PV dropped.... which means it's time for me to share my thoughts!!
(And as usual. Ignore the shitty quality of the screenshots)
First up, I have to mention the fact that MAISONdes is doing the OP and ED again!! The new OP is 'Rock On*' feat. Hashimero, Meguru and the new ED is 'Raizakura' feat. 9Lana, SAKURAmoti. Here are the gorgeous album cover arts for both songs and oh my gosh, they are so precious!!
*It might either be 'Lock on' since the Japanese pronunciation for 'L' and 'R' sounds the same.
(Edit: Seems like it is 'Lock on' after all!!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for my thoughts on the songs themselves, so far they sound great, but to form a proper opinion I need to hear the whole thing as well as see how it pairs with the visuals.
Now to the actual PV itself.. (Attention: Spoilers!!)
First up, as expected, there's a lot of new footage shown. Many of them are from the episodes shown in the previous PV which I've already discussed (go read it if you haven't, since this is technically a part 2) so I'm not going to talk about any episode shown previously unless it's new or specifically worth mentioning..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, I want to talk about the adaptation of the hilariously deceptive 'Lum becomes a cow' chapter. Let's be honest, this is hands down the funniest AtaLum chapter of all time and it looks like the remake is making the AtaLum moments in this one extra dramatic (they even added rain for more effect!) just so the final payoff would hit us in the most hilarious way possible (unless those bits are from something else but I doubt it). AtaLum enjoyers (me included) are being really well fed this cour, huh?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know where these and a few others come from (please tell me if you know!!). I'm guessing the fourth one might be from the chapter about Ryu's mom since it was already confirmed previously and the montage looks like a flashback with lot of beach vibes but I might be wrong. The Kotatsu Neko one might come from the Kitsune (fox) chapter with the photo and camera since I remember a similar scene which looks like that shot, but again I might be wrong. There are a few other scenes as well (Onsen-mark getting hit, Ten hanging from a tree and such). Maybe they're anime original scenes? Who knows, but we'll know sooner enough...
Tumblr media
That's really all I have to say anything new about the PV, everything else are chapters I've already pointed out. That aside I do have to give props to how absolutely gorgeous everything looks as well as the fluid animation. The above shot of Lum and Ten sleeping is so pretty!! There are others but there's too many to count and it's obvious which all they are. I also like how Inaba's bunny realm looks and I'm also in love with AtaLum's outfit colorings for their 'date' in the electric jungle arc, they're kinda caramel coded!! Speaking of AtaLum, the PV also showed a lot of their key moments which surprised me since I though they'd keep those a secret till the episode airs, but to be fair, it's only bits and it did end up making the PV a bit emotional.. :')
Tumblr media
(I had space for one more image till I hit Tumblr's limit so here, have an Inaba coming out of a trash can. He looks so proud of himself XD)
Anyways, that's all for now. This cour seems to be very AtaLum focused, to the point where the OP and ED album cover arts have both Lum and Ataru in it!! But it still has other fun storylines as well and I'm excited for all the episodes, may it be big or small. There's one week left and we'll probably get next weeks episode titles on Tuesday (as how it always is). One more week, here we go!!!

Hello lovely!
Because I love your takes and posts on the eternally beautiful, wonderful Richard Z. Kruspe, I was wondering what your top five random weird facts about him are - like silly things he’s said or other people have said about him (e.g. Khira’s post on insta complaining about all the naked lady art in the house!)
TY! 😘
Hello my dear and thank you so much for your ask! Glad you enjoy my posts, this means a lot to me 🥰
Tumblr media
This one took me a while (had to comb through several interviews for this), but I shamelessly used this ask to create two little lists - one with weird little facts/moments and one with interesting little facts in general. Not necessarily my top five (would be super hard to pick them), but moments which I think about currently. A lot 😄
Random weird facts and moments:
Literally this interview. He had absolutely no restraint and some pick-me-vibes going on, especially in these moments: - Interviewer: 'On the surface, the title A Million Degrees seems to suggest heat or that you are implying that the music is hot or on fire.' RZK: 'Or just me!' (laughs) - Interviewer: (speaking about the possibility of Emigrate opening for Rammstein) 'Isn’t it physically exhausting, too?' RZK: 'Yeah, it’s like having two women in the same night!' (laughs) - Interviewer: (after explaining her thoughts about the title "A million degrees) 'So, out of curiosity, what was your intention with the album’s title?' RZK: 'I always knew that women were smarter than men!'
me reading this entire interview:
Tumblr media
That recording an album with Rammstein can be quite exhausting is something Richard (and sometimes also other members) mentioned several times. They discuss a lot, sometimes have verbal fights, etc. - but Richard admitted that he sometimes wished for proper "Wild West" fist fights because that maybe would've also solved some problems 👀 (as I mentioned some time ago, how about some anger management my guy) (source)
Poor little lad does not understand the concept of strip clubs, plus since he doesn't drink alcohol, it's apparently abysmally boring for him in these locations 😪 Better write a strip song, fitting for a good striptease, and that's how we got the song "Get Down" (source)
Widely known, but still: this moment from this interview: - Interviewer: 'What would you spend your last £20 on?' RZK: 'How much is that in Euros, about 20? A nice blowjob! Actually, change that - a handjob. Yes, they're easy to get near where I live. I could get 20 minutes for 20€, that's good value!'
2. Random interesting (at least for me) facts in general:
In this podcast Richard mentions that the Emigrate album "The persistence of memory" essentially was a therapeutic project for him. In 2019, he fell into a heavily depressive episode after the tour and even contemplated quitting music completely. So he started to sift through his old compositions and songs he had on his computer, some dating back over 20 years, and somehow found his love for music again through those memories - and this album, which was not at all planned, was the result of this process. This is the reason why we have songs like "Freeze my mind" for example, which dates all the way back to 2001 and was written by Richard and his then-wife Caron.
In this interview Richard mentions that these four songs are his favourites (at least at this point in time): - Hurt by Nine Inch Nails - Babe I'm gonna leave you by Led Zeppelin - Sin City by AC/DC - Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode
The book "Perfume" by Patrick Süßkind (which explores dark themes of obsession and power, linked with the sense of smell and emotions), which he read as a teenager, was the reason why he wanted to create something which REALLY moves a crowd, like the perfect song. (source)
Here Richard mentioned that when his daughter Khira was younger, he played her a lot of the Rammstein tracks because he knew she would be brutally honest and give him straightforward feedback. This didn't work anymore after some time, since as a teenager she later learned how to please him and get what she wanted (let's be real, we've all been there). Plus, he's apparently a rather strict parent, believing that you have to make a lot of experiences to get forward in life and that self-discipline helps a great deal.
In this interview, Richard mentions that he likes to pick out an audience member to get an connection to through eye contact (at least this was the case back then) - and this eye contact helps him to put on a good show, most likely to play the concert for this particular fan. Plus he thinks about doing mediation after a concert, as a vent to balance out all the energy he's absorbed from the crowd.
I hope these lists are at least a bit like what you had in mind as an answer 😊 Thanks a lot again for this ask 🤍

A list of my works on AO3
(they're all Saiki K fics at the moment but I'll add fandom categories to this post if I ever get a new interest lol)
It doesn't fit my plans; it's something I don't understand
Published July 11, 2021
Summary: Saiki is fascinated by Satou Hiroshi, and the people around him start to see that this might be more than just a platonic curiosity.
What is this feeling called love?
[Notes: Bittersweet ending. Nobody gets together. My insistence on theming these early fics after songs is pretty embarrassing now. I'm not proud of my writing here but the story is ok. I might rewrite it someday. Not bad for my first fic since like 2003 though]
Something Changed
Published August 11, 2021
Summary: Aiura wrote a letter to her soulmate the night before they were supposed to meet.
She's predicted a lot of things... how could she have gotten this one wrong?
[Notes: Another sad ending. The format of this is almost entirely an excited letter about the future Aiura imagined that would never come to pass. Not really much of a story happening here tbh]
Won't it be strange when we're all fully grown?
Published August 28, 2021 (INCOMPLETE)
Summary: With graduation quickly approaching, the psychics of PK Academy (and Akechi) worry that they'll drift apart. Luckily, they come up with an idea.
"Let's all meet up in the year 2030!"
A lot can change in a decade.
[Notes: Kind of like a psychicker class reunion where they're all adults with jobs and everything catching up. Future chapters were going to have almost a Scooby Doo vibe (with a twist reveal at the end about Aiura's husband!) I abandoned it because I posted some art and someone called my art creepy and it made the whole fic feel bad to think about. Maybe I'll get back to it someday. It's cool to see how quickly my writing improved. I was also super proud of how well I wrote Akechi's dialogue here]
Hotel Valentine
Published September 24, 2021
Summary: Toritsuka Reita is a pretty lucky guy. He somehow managed to not get expelled from PK Academy, he graduated, and he's avoided creeping on any living girls for a few months. To celebrate, the PK Psychics paid for a one-night stay in the fanciest hotel in Tokyo so Reita can creep on the ghost girl of his dreams. Pretty lucky, right?
Too bad things aren't going his way. He's being ignored by the staff, he's bored out of his mind, and he can't find the ghost girl anywhere. Some vacation, huh?
[Notes: Spoiler: Toritsuka's a ghost stuck in a nice hotel. This is based on a concept album that most of you have never heard but hear me out! It really has nothing to do with the Cibo Matto album of the same title except that the chapters are named after the songs and there are fun Easter eggs for fans of the album. Another slightly sad ending but not too bad]
Coffee & TV
Published August 27th, 2022
Summary: The new silence in her house felt heavy on Kumi's shoulders. Everything reminded her of Kumagoro... especially her grandson Kusuo, who has been coming to visit more often than ever before.
[Notes: this is my least popular finished fic and I understand why. It's about grief and the loss of a grandparent. It's about the unique pain that a psychic would have after failing to prevent that death. There's a sad twist that TBH I think I was a little too subtle with. One of my favorites]
Friendly Fire
Published January 8, 2023
Summary: Being an adult is great until the Problems start. Good grief.
30-year-old Kusuo's psychic powers have been pretty well controlled for over a decade. Why are things starting to go haywire all of a sudden?
[Notes: Friendly Fire my fucking beloved!! In this fic, Saiki gets essentially psychic multiple sclerosis and has to deal with some complicated emotions. I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything but it was cathartic to write and I'm in love with the versions of these characters that I wrote here. So much so that I'm writing a sequel just so I can write more of them. Also, FINALLY a happy ending!!]
Ramen Ikouze?
Published April 28, 2023
Summary: After being dragged to get ramen with Nendou every week, Kusuo starts to realize that it's not so bad after all.
[Notes: I love Nendou, he's so good. This fic is very cute and about their friendship. A couple of fun twists]
Saiki has Plans?
Published May 2, 2023
Summary: Saiki mentions having plans after school, and the overactive imaginations at PK Academy work themselves into a fuss trying to imagine what he could be doing.
[Notes: This fic follows around a bunch of Saiki's classmates as they gossip and snoop to find out what he's up to. It's my most popular fic for some reason]
A Bright Flash
Published May 13, 2023
Summary: Saiki develops an annoying new ability, and through some comedy series logic is forced to tell Teruhashi about it. She tries to be a good ally to her "newly psychic" crush.
[Notes: Teruhashi accidentally finds out about Saiki's new power and he's like "fine. I'm a psychic. But it's just this one power and nothing else."]
Heat Wave
Published June 6, 2023
Summary: There's a historic heat wave in Hidariwakibara, and some of our favorite PK Academy students end up running into each other while taking refuge from the hot weather.
A series of four standalone (but connected) stories taking place at the same time:
Aiura has a vision of disaster, and she and Nendou try to stop it
Yumehara gives Toritsuka some advice to improve his game
Akechi meets Teruhashi's brother
Saiki really wants some shaved ice from the kakigori stand where Mera is working
[Notes: The summary explains it well but also I weaved so many connections between the chapters (that are all happening at roughly the same time). It was also a lot of fun writing interactions between characters that didn't get much in canon. Also you can tell it was hot as hell when I wrote it because I definitely gave Saiki some kind of psychic heat intolerance lol]
Immunity
Published July 6, 2023
Summary: She didn't know why, but Kokomi was finally able to see the truth.
Why Saiki seemed to appear and disappear without explanation. Why it seemed like he always knew what she was planning. Why he wore those weird hairpins.
It was all so obvious now.
Saiki had psychic powers.
[Notes: The veil is lifted suddenly and all the truths that Saiki kept locked behind his mind control were revealed to Teruhashi. He and Aiura have a chat with her about it. Also this was the first fic of mine that an IRL friend read (to my knowledge) and his comment was something like "I don't know anything about your boy but he sounds autistic and gnc" and I took that as a fucking compliment! You know you've written Saiki right when people can see that shit from space]
The Disastrous Financial Situation of Saiki K
Published August 9, 2023 (IN PROGRESS)
Summary: Adjusting to his new limitations has been annoying, and now Kusuo (age 31) needs a car to get around.
Unfortunately, taking time off work has drained his savings.
How is he going to get the money for a car now?
[Notes: This is my sequel to Friendly Fire but it's a lot lighter in nature. 100-Yen-Man goes around doing stuff for Saiki's friends. There are mentions of his disability from Friendly Fire and it's plot relevant but I think you can catch on even if you didn't read the original. I haven't updated in a while but I am actively working on it!! A Yumehara and Makino chapter next and then a Toritsuka chapter after that. TBH this isn't my best work and it's pretty unpopular but I'm having fun and that's all that counts)

hi!! 5 and 21 for regulus please <3
Aye Yooo!! (Thank you~)
Those are really good ones too!
5- I actually have a few songs that come to mind for Regulus because I am low-key (high-key) obsessed with making playlists for my various WIPs. So here's just my top 5 (because I have to limit myself here...) and why:
Regulus - ONEWE First of all, the title obviously XD. But aside from that, it's so pretty too! and I looked up the English translation and there's this one line that kills me,
"I'm withering, but you don't be withering Remember me even when I'm gone, yeah, just a little selfishly This star is precious a living and breathing memory Even if it's far away from the earth"
2. Reckless Driving - Lizzy McAlpine & Ben Kessler The StarChaser vibes are simply immaculate in this song.
3. Lonely Star - Oh Wonder Honestly, this one kind of speaks for itself (ToT) 4. Hymne a l'amour - Edith Piaf What can I say? Solmussa's Only the Brave rewired my brain. I listen to this song all the time.
5. Stay - Phemiec This one also have fantastic Starchaser vibes and honestly Phemiec's songs from this album are all in my playlist for The Art of Running for Our Lives. The lyrics, "She made it okay to not be okay. She made me believe that someone would, that someone could Stay" just really hit hardest with a pleasant mix of Black Brothers angst and StarChaser <3 21- I think that my favorite thing to do while writing Regulus is to give him some sort of obsession with the stars.
I know it's kind of a cliche answer, but I'm also the type of person who will step out of the house at 3 am to just look at the sky for a second and exist in that space for a little bit. I love the stars so much and my biggest dream is to go to one of those Dark Sky Conservatories and my goal is to project that onto Regulus and Sirius in anyway possible. <3
I also love writing him to be happy. I put this man through absolute hell because the more they hurt, the better the comfort. (and since I'm a slut for happy endings and hurt/comfort, it just makes all the pain so much more worth it! My least favorite thing..? I'm not gonna lie, I actually really love writing Regulus. I find it a lot easier to write from the perspective of a character with a lot of emotional depth and trauma than anything else. Oddly enough, because of this, I actually struggle a bit more with writing James.
I guess if you'd like another answer, it would be smut. Not because I don't like it, but because the last time I wrote a full smut scene was on Wattpad when I was in high school. Which I graduated from in 2016. 😂 (The worst part is that it still exists on the internet forever. 😔)

'Freddie Mercury felt like a god. Then he started behaving like one,' by the man who signed Queen
By NORMAN J SHEFFIELD, Founder of Trident Studios where Queen first recorded // PUBLISHED: 17:00 EDT, 20 July 2013 | UPDATED: 17:16 EDT, 20 July 2013 (x)
NORMAN J SHEFFIELD on the amazing story of how one of Britain's best loved rock bands made it big
Freddie Mercury used to say there was no question in his mind that Queen would be a success
I was sitting in my office one day in 1971 when I got a call from my brother Barry down in the studio.
‘Norman, come down and have a listen to something,’ he said.
John Anthony, Trident’s A&R man, had discovered a band called Smile.
At the start, the lead guitarist was an astrophysics student from Imperial College called Brian May, the bassist and singer was an art student called Tim Staffell, and the drummer was a biology student called Roger Taylor.
It turned out that they’d now reshaped the band.
Staffell had been replaced by this little Indian-looking guy with a big, operatic voice and they had a new bass player.
John had asked for their demo. It was raw but there was definitely something there. I’d opened Trident Studios in 1968 in Soho.
Its cutting-edge facilities and happening vibe were attracting the greatest talents of the era, from The Beatles and Elton John to David Bowie and Marc Bolan.
The four guys who came into my office a couple of weeks later were an intriguing mix of characters.
Roger Taylor was a really good-looking kid, with long blond hair and charm. Brian May was tall with a mane of curls and a little introverted but clearly very intelligent. The bass player, John Deacon, was also quiet. I could tell right away that the fourth member was going to be high maintenance.
His real name was Farokh Bulsara. He was born in Zanzibar and educated in India. The family had immigrated to England when he was a teenager. He’d gone to Ealing Art College to study art and graphic design. He was also a gifted singer and pianist.
When he joined the band, he immediately gave himself a more rock ’n’ roll name: Freddie Mercury.
He was charming, acted a bit shy and reserved at times and spoke in quite a posh, mannered voice. When he relaxed he had a very sharp sense of humour and spoke at a hundred miles an hour.
Queen turned out to be every bit as good - and demanding - as we'd anticipated. Things had to be one hundred per cent right, otherwise they wouldn't be happy
They’d rightly decided to ditch Smile as their name. I nearly choked on my coffee when I heard their new one: Queen. The world wasn’t as enlightened then as it is today.
We were worried that it would be a real turn-off, especially given the band’s look. Freddie apparently had a girlfriend but we were pretty certain he was gay.
But the name wasn’t up for negotiation. I agreed to offer the Queenies, as we christened them, a loose kind of arrangement. There were times when the studio was ‘dark’, usually at 2am. So we said: ‘We’ll give you this downtime in the studio to see what you can do.’
They turned out to be every bit as good – and demanding – as we’d anticipated. Things had to be one hundred per cent right, otherwise they wouldn’t be happy. They’d spend days and nights working on the harmonies.
Arguments would start about the tiniest little detail. They’d start screaming, shouting and chucking things. Sometimes it would blow over in a few minutes, but at other times they would stew on it, not talking to each other for a day or two. They’d always sort it out, however. It wasn’t personal, it was about the work.
The more adulation Freddie received on stage, the harder he became to work with offstage
Freddie used to say there was no question in his mind that Queen would be a success.
‘There was never a doubt, darling, never,’ he’d say with an imperious wave of his hand.
The title of their first album was simply Queen.
Another suggestion had been Dearie Me, Freddie’s catchphrase, which was quite funny but the band were a hard enough sell as it was.
They spent ages arguing about the album sleeve. The front cover was a single image of Freddie on stage, with two spotlights in the background.
For the back cover the boys put together a collage of snaps of themselves.
Freddie had driven everyone to distraction fretting over whether he looked ‘gorgeous enough’ in them.
By the end of the year they were on the road with Mott the Hoople, but Queen were getting more encores and bigger cheers than the headliners.
They were due to go to Australia for a gig when Brian suddenly developed a really high fever. His arm had swollen up to the size of a football and doctors diagnosed gangrene.
At one point it was touch and go whether he would lose it. Luckily the crisis eased and he was allowed to fly.
However, the gig was a disaster. The local DJ introducing them had clearly taken against them because he introduced them as ‘stuck-up Pommies’. When they got on stage, the crowd turned against them, too.
The boys were mightily relieved when they got on a plane back to London. For some bizarre reason, the British press had been tipped off that Her Majesty the Queen was arriving at Heathrow. So when they saw four knackered musicians emerging through Customs, they weren’t too happy.
On their first tour of America, Brian’s health was deteriorating. Our worst fears were confirmed when doctors announced he had hepatitis.
The rest of the tour had to be cancelled. It was a disaster, professionally and personally. Then, when they came back to London in August, he had to have an emergency operation for an ulcer.
The opening track on A Night At The Opera attacked their management
But on October 11, 1974, EMI put out Killer Queen, from their third album, Sheer Heart Attack.
Within weeks it had given the boys the thing they’d most wanted – a No. 1 single.
As Queen hit the road again, this time as a headline act in their own right, it was clear they were on the verge of major success.
But the more adulation Freddie received on stage, the harder he became to work with offstage.
The tour came to an end at the famous Rainbow Theatre in London. The day before the gig, Freddie was being even more pedantic than usual.
‘Oh, stop being such a tart, Freddie,’ Brian said.
Freddie was outraged. He tossed back his head, waved his arms and stormed off in a strop.
When it was time for the soundcheck, Brian turned the mic on.
‘Freddiepoos, where are you?’ he shouted.
Freddie appeared immediately with a face like thunder. He flounced on stage, gave Brian a vicious look and then just got on with it. That’s what they always did.
In 1975 they went to Japan and found 3,000 fans waiting for them, all chanting the band’s name. It was like Beatlemania. Freddie had finally found the acclaim he’d craved all his life. He felt like a god. Unfortunately, he soon started behaving like one, too.
The more successful they became, the more agitated Queen had grown about money. One of the most heated rows came when John got married. In the run-up to the wedding he announced he wanted me to spring £10,000 (about £90,000 in 2013 values) for him to buy a house. I didn’t react too well.
Then Freddie demanded a grand piano. When I turned him down, he  banged his fist on my desk. ‘I have to get a grand piano,’ he said.
Norman J Sheffield: By the time I realised things were badly wrong it was too late
I wasn’t being mean. We knew there was a huge amount of money due to come flooding our way from Queen’s success. I explained that some of it was already coming in but the vast majority of it hadn’t arrived yet.
‘But we’re stars. We’re selling millions of records,’ Freddie said.
‘And I’m still living in the same flat I’ve been in for the past three years.’
The amount of money we’d invested in the band was huge.
We’d advanced them equipment and salaries right at the beginning and had continued to pour money into them for four years.
The fact the band owed Trident close to £200,000 (£1.75 million today) didn’t seem to register with Freddie.
I can remember the conversation.
‘The money will come in December,’ I said. ‘So wait.’
Then came a phrase he would make famous around the world in years to come, although no one would have known where it was born.
Freddie stamped his feet and raised his voice: ‘No, I am not prepared to wait any longer. I want it all. I want it now.’
By late 1975 I was hearing that they were making all sorts of derogatory comments about Trident.
Then I heard a track from A Night At The Opera called Death On Two Legs. The opening two lines summed up what was to come.
‘You suck my blood like a leech/you break the law and you breach’, then, ‘Do you feel like suicide?’ it went on, ‘I think that you should’. It was some kind of nasty hate mail from Freddie to me.
Soon Bohemian Rhapsody roared to the top of the UK charts and stayed there for nine weeks. A bittersweet moment, it came as news was beginning to leak that we had split from Queen.
We should have talked more. And I should have been more attentive to their feelings. By the time I realised things were badly wrong, it was too late.
In March 1977 the company settled with the band for the sale of all of its future rights, the rights to the old albums and the settlement of the management debt.
Freddie’s dream finally came true and he became a very wealthy man. When he died, no one was sadder than me. He may have been a monster to deal with, but he was also a genius.
I did see him once, in the years following our fallout, in 1986, when I took the family to their Knebworth concert. He was friendly, as if the rows of the past were forgotten. It turned out to be their last live concert, which meant I was at their first and last.
Years later, after his death, I went to the Freddie Mercury Memorial Concert at Wembley, where I saw the three remaining members being photographed.
John Deacon pointed at me and said: ‘And if it hadn’t been for that man we wouldn’t be here.’
Brian and Roger looked at me and nodded. That gesture went a long way towards exorcising the ghosts of the past.

I do think the notion that the song titles are too “corny” for the theme/vibe of the album is a bit funny because like. Are we taking the album title that seriously? Because if so, I do not think we should be. Like, as soon as the reminder came up about Joe’s “tortured men’s club” text chat I was like. Ohhh. Anyway, for what it’s worth, I think she’s making fun of him. And also, in a way, making fun of herself. Do I think she considers herself a “tortured Poet”? Yes absolutely but like. Only ironically! I think she’s making fun of the notion that you have to be tortured to produce worthy art, that genius is the byproduct of great anguish. And also making fun of the version of herself that sort of maybe once kind of believed that, too. I think the vibe of the album is going to be her “poetry” (music) spurning from a place of freedom rather than confinement. The love was torture but it was also magic and now it’s over and that torture, too for a little while, but only a little because it’s also magic, and it’s also a million other things—just like her and art x

I made myself an Astos playlist for fun last week and was compelled to make cover art for it, so here's that!
Why Quiet Quitting? What is Stranger of Paradise about if not a dark elf quiet quitting their job for XXXXX years?
✧ Step into my twisted mind (for the tracklist/notes) ✧
✧ 9 to 5 ✧
Dolly Parton
They just use your mind / And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
Note: One of my favorite Stranger of Paradise pastimes is thinking about Lufenia's TERRIBLE business practices. This was the last track added to the playlist.
✧ Never Recover ✧
The Cardigans
With a hero in the past / You hang on to history
Such a loss will always last / And there's no recovery
Note: The Cardigans have so much more to offer beyond Lovefool and the U.S. Gran Turismo 2 opening. A good flavor of upbeat misery.
✧ Everyday Is The Worst Day Of My Life ✧
The Lemon Twigs
Everyday is the worst day of my life
The worst day of my life
Note: I had originally considered using They Don't Know How to Fall In Place (mostly on account of being more of a song and less of a shitpost) but this was too funny not to use. This is the only song on this playlist that isn't 20+ years old. Sidenote: this band capitalizes all of the prepositions/articles in their song titles, like a middle schooler titling an essay.
✧ The Good Life ✧
Weezer
I should have no feeling / 'Cause feeling is pain
As everything I need is denied me
And everything I want is taken away from me
Note: My most ambivalent selection! Mostly due to preconceived notions on what I thought the vibes of this playlist would be. Happy to be incorrect and it's funnier to have Weezer and Brand New here than on Jack's list (I'd sooner give Jack The Sweater Song, anyway).
✧ Onde Sensuelle ✧
-M-
Mais comment t'atteindre? Onde sensuelle
Toi qui me donnes des ailes
Pourrais-je te rendre un jour éternelle
Pour nous lier jusqu'au ciel
How could I reach you? Sensual wave
You who lend me wings?
Will I manage one day to make you eternal
And bind us toward the skies?
Note: An entirely vibes-based selection! 💜 Auto-translated, sssorry!
✧ Positive Contact ✧
Deltron 3030
Mad creator, savage nature / World Wide Web, the ebb and flow
Light-years from watchful eyes while my thoughts provide
Objectives to ostracize pompous prophecies
Note: Upon actually committing to making this playlist, I hoped to god there'd be a Deltron track I could use, because it would be so funny for Astos. I would've first heard this album not long after the 2008 reissue. The transition between this and Positive Contact feels real good.
✧ Okay, I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't ✧
Brand New
This is the grace only we can bestow
This is the price you pay for loss of control
This is the break in the bend / This is the closest of calls
This is the reason you're alone / This is the rise and the fall!
Note: I actually switched this between playlists a couple of times before settling with Astos, but idk what I was thinking otherwise with lines like My tongue's the only muscle that works harder than my heart, lol. I think it was due to Jack's playlist feeling a little too Soft, at the time; past-me was incorrect, of course.
✧ It's Too Late ✧
Carole King
But it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died / And I can't hide it
I just can't fake it
Note: The quintessential breakup song!
✧ Stardust ✧
Billy Ward and his Dominoes
But that was long ago
And now my consolation / Is in the stardust of a song
Note: this is the first song I added to this playlist, and I always had it right at the end. something about having a bittersweet oldie felt like a nice echo of My Way. I would've first heard this via the Goodfellas soundtrack, which I wholeheartedly recommend.
Thanks for looking at whatever this is! While you're here, please be sure to check out @corvuscorona's excellent Astos playlist: SHADOW MONSTER.

best choreos of 2023!
not gonna lie, this year was a rough one for choreos. like with the actual music itself, this year was profoundly complacent and very few choreographies were truly inspired and willing to do something original. i was actually afraid for a bit that i was not even gonna be able to fill out a top ten list, much less having any runners' up. so here's a list of runners' up:
new dayz - trendz
spotlight - yunho
wormhole - n.ssign
neverland - nine.i
baggy jeans - nct u
koong - xikers
vuja de - yunho
bouncy - ateez
journey - woodz
and my favourites:
circle - onew
youtube
i have a bit of a love hate relationship with the circle choreo bc on one hand i LOVE it, the imagery and idea is beautiful i think it's one of the few choreos this year that actually embodies what the song and the cb were trying to say. but on the other hand, as a contemporary dance enjoyer it is.........let down by the fact that kpop is a predominantly hiphop based genre and the backup dancers are not up to snuff for this type of choreo. kaspar did a pretty good job choreographing it but hiphop and contemp/modern are notoriously hard styles to slide between for dancers, and i really think they should have actually got a modern choreographer and a modern troupe. it would have significantly upped the quality and given the stages that extra gut punch.
grl gvng - xg
youtube
honestly you really could sub in any xg choreo from this year here bc they were all stellar, but the commitment of grl gvng clinched it for me. the costuming, the makeup, the style of movement all tell such a clear story that i would have included it on my list regardless of what the album was, but the transition from hesonoo to xgene to grl gvng is fucking UNREAL. it's so refreshing to see a gg actually commit to a concept that isn't pretty bubbly straightness and to not compromise on it regardless of how much people bitch, right down to the choreo. there's something immensely satisfying about seeing a choreo about how these girls are alien cyborgs and have it actually LOOK like they are alien cyborgs, the intentional clunkiness and 'offputting' movements and all. i've been begging for an actual real concept like this for years and finally. finally it has been delivered.
chrome arts - onlyoneof
youtube
its not a choreo list by me if there isn't an ooo one, and once again they came right out of the gate at the beginning of the year with something batshit insane. the knee walk move is crazy. i love it 10/10.
killer - key
youtube
unlike a lot of the other entries on this list, i don't think killer has as concise of a concept other than "the 80s", but the great thing about it is that you absolutely can successfully pull off a more abstract concept if you do it well. this is such a strong choreo with good images and composition, plus a lot of 80s references in the moves themselves, and sometimes that's all you need if you put the right care into it. this is actually one of the few choreos that i've seen that correctly capture the feel of an mj choreo from the 80s, which seems to be a real challenge for a lot of idols. i will say that i think it would have made more sense to me if this had been a repack to bad love, bc it has the same vein of nostalgia vibes and a very similar feel in the shapes of the choreo, but really they're all part of his retro series so it's not a substantive complaint.
the rizzness - taemin
youtube
don't speak to me don't look at me i'm literally never recovering from this in my entire life. i cannot fucking believe he made me say with full conviction that ""the rizzness"" is one of the best taemin bsides but also of fucking course he did. this is black rose but eviler (complimentary). it's so interesting to see how versatile taemin's style is and where his true strengths lie. obviously his title track choreos are perfectly tailored to his body and his abilities and they are all unreal choreos on their own. but there's something about the way that he carries himself when he does more hiphop based choreo that has such a natural power to it. it's so clear that this is the style that he started learning dance in and especially now that he's become much more settled in his body since he got back from the military, it's so obvious how much love he has for this song and this way of movement that i don't think any of his title tracks will stack up in the same to it in my eyes.
don't call me - dkz nine to six
youtube
insane. insane insane insane. i love everything about this. it's weird its creative it had very clear imagery that supports the song, it says fuck capitalism, what more could you possibly want. honestly one of the best choreos of the last couple years. i'm also gonna include nod here too bc it was the bside they promoted and it has crazy choreo also, and highly recommend ppl listen to digital love, the other bside. very strong release from dkz this year despite all the shit they went through.

here's hoping 2024 is better!

underrated album #231283: Death to Analog - Julien-K Julien-K is the side project of 2 members of Orgy, but it's a lot more (late-2000s-era) synthpop/synthrock than Orgy is. as a synth fan i can safely say this album is banger after bANGER. it was released in 2009, which is insane to think about because i've definitely been listening to it for 15 years.. which qualifies Death to Analog for my exclusive title of "timeless classics". all you have to do is listen to the first track to want more. the album art is perfect for the vibe~
