the first kill is always hard (ofmd s2 spoilers)

Ed is seeing someone who he fell in love with bcus of his bold challenging perspective on piracy loose the essence of what made him so compelling and relatable to him in the first place. Stede is foppish and weak and sensitive and he cries all the time and likes to pick flowers, but he’s also a pirate, and that’s why Blackbeard wanted to meet him so badly. Stede gave him the hope that maybe there r ways to exist as a pirate, as a man, in a way that isn’t violent or abusive, or adhering to a toxic culture. And then Ed sees Stede succumb to the toxic culture, adhere to its standards, and abandon what made him so refreshing and hopeful in the first place for the sake of embracing the abusive system that Ed is trying to break away from.

Stede has been bullied all his life and, despite his confidence and boldness as the gentleman pirate, he is so deeply insecure. He’s terrified of bullying, he’s terrified of shame, he just wants to be Good Enough. And after “ruining” the greatest pirate in history he’s even more desperate to prove himself as worth something, or prove at least that he belongs, that he is a pirate. So of course he kills Ned, even when he feels sick and hes scared and he knows he doesn’t want to, knows that’s not him. Despite this he does it, bcus that’s what a pirate captain would do. That’s the expectation, every pirate has a first kill. If he’s a pirate he should adhere to this. He’s scared and he’s sensitive and he doesn’t like killing, so he pushes it away, pushes it far far away and plays the tough pirate captain who made someone walk the plank, embraces the attention and the persona. (Not the best at talking it through are we Stede) And Ed’s going in the opposite direction, he’s throwing his leathers away, discovering what he enjoys and who he is when he’s not the tough pirate he performs as. They want different things oh nooo.

No wonder they broke up 😭

in this scene of surface pressure, we can see mirabel standing up from the ground, and her hand is hidden from view, but at one point (see second pic), we see it slightly raised
