I don't understand where this: "Rory is used to people treating her as the center of the universe." thing is coming from.
She is literally just a normal girl from a small town and in small towns people know each other, hence why the townspeople greet her and her mother and try to find out the tea about them. As someone who lives in a small town, I know how much people there love to gossip, so it is very realistic. Also notice how most of the townspeople paying attention to Rory are either her mother's friends who will obviously have an emotional attachment to her since they watched her grow up or people like Taylor who directly want something from her (to guilt her into volunteering for town events). She is not a town celebrity by any means.
Yes, her family on her mother side loves her and spoils her but that is nothing unusual. People forget that the family on her father's side doesn't love her and they even see her as "a mistake" or even "an embarrassment".
Her teachers seem to like her a normal amount but that's only because she's good in school and stays out of trouble, but you never see teachers fawning over her and let her get away with things when she gets into serious trouble (like missing the test or breaking into school to ring that bell). I don't remember a single instance when a teacher gave Rory some kind of extra treatment just because she's "the center of the universe" as antis love to claim.
And as for her peers, she is literally not popular! She struggles socially at school and we are shown that in the pilot in Stars Hollow high and in Chilton. Her only friend is Lane, other girls in SHH call her a nerd and raise their eyebrows at her, in Chilton she doesn't fit in among the rich spoiled kids and is constantly seen sitting alone at lunch and she is surprised by Dean's and Tristan's attention because it is the first time that guys are giving her any attention! She even can't believe it at first, that's how not used to it she is.
I am writing all of this because a video I watched yesterday breaking down Gilmore Girls season by season said that "Logan's parents are the first people that didn't treat Rory like the center of the universe" which is plain untrue, there were plenty of people before that- the girls from the pilot were taunting Rory behind her back for being a nerd, Mrs Kim doesn't like Rory, girls at Chilton especially Paris hated Rory at first, didn't Headmaster Charleston literally threaten to expell Rory because she was struggling with grades and then threw a fit when she missed her test?, Rory's own father seems very indifferent to her and when he shows up he pays more attention to Lorelei than her, her paternal grandparents hate her and call her "a mistake" to her face, Lindsay didn't like Rory simply because she is her boyfriend's ex even before they started their affair, that guy from the laundry room that rejected her ... need I go on?
So no, Rory isn't some kind of child star or wunderkind that everyone fawns over, she is just a girl that adults around her like a normal amount because she is smart and stays out of trouble, but also keep in mind that when she actually does act out or get in trouble, she falls off the pedestal and people are not very forgiving. It is a double edged sword. But to claim that she is some kind of celebrity or Queen Bee of Stars Hollow is just plain wrong.

Upon request, today we have a rec list of bottom Louis fics where Louis or Harry are bakers. If you enjoy our rec lists, please be sure to like and reblog this post to help spread the word. Happy reading!
1) Christmas Lights In Paris | Mature | 4,671 words
Harry vividly remembered the day he was foolish enough to be blinded by pointless rage. It had been on Louis' birthday, a year ago, and Harry had bought tickets to Paris for both him and Lou. He had expected Louis to come with him to Paris for 3 years, without really talking about the plan to his lover. Everything went down hill when Louis refused. "You think your bakery is far more important than I am?" Were the exact words he had spewed and stormed off.
2) Don’t Say Yes, Run Away Now | Not Rated | 5,076 words
Louis is getting married and Harry made a promise. Plus, he has a plan. Kind of.
3) Too Nervous To Be Lovers | Mature | 6,445 words
Louis doesn't want to spend quarantine with Harry, his straight roommate, who doesn't even acknowledge his existence.
4) I Built This Bed For Two (I Built This Bed For Me and You) | Explicit | 8,942 words
Harry and Louis broke up after uni and haven't seen each other since—until they're roped into doing a Buzzfeed video together. Featuring awkward cuddling and a reunion that just needed a kick in the arse, gleefully provided by Niall.
5) Feel My Love | Explicit | 10,479 words
Note: This fic is locked and can only be read by AO3 users.
Louis always gets things done on time, he just takes a detour along the way. The detour? Having sex with Harry. Harry never brings it up. Until he does.
6) Were We Ever This Young? | Explicit | 17,297 words
Hogwarts AU in which Harry and Louis both return to give talks to seventh years about the 'real world' with slightly varying results. Inspired by the Chilton scene between Rory and Paris in the new Gilmore Girls.
7) Heart of Sugar, Sweet Temptation of Mine | Explicit | 25,600 words
The process of courting is seriously outdated nowadays, it's not common anymore; people don’t want to go through the hassle of a proper courtship, dating is easier. Louis though, he was raised in a very traditional family, every member, down to his parents, had a courting and a mating ceremony. He grew up hearing stories about how wonderful it is, how much deeper the connection gets between a courting pair can get, and he's wanted that for himself since he was a pup, always dreaming of his alpha showing up and sweeping him off of his feet. His dreams seem to be coming true when he moves into a new building, closer to where he works, and the older alpha living in the flat in front of his own, initiates the courtship process. Everything he's ever wanted is within reach. Or is it?
8) Confections Of The Heart | Explicit | 25,877 words
Harry chuckles, smiling when Louis’ breath hitches as he reaches up to brush his thumb over Louis’ cheek. “Louis, would you like to go on a date with me?” He still worries that the date won’t go well, that Harry will get bored of him or decide it’s too complicated dating an omega with a pup, but he nods anyway, “Yes.” It feels worth it when Harry’s lips widen into a grin and the dimple that Louis finds quite charming craters into his cheek. Who knows, maybe it won’t be as awkward as you think, Louis thinks to himself and follows Harry to where Oliver is watching a chef with a loud laugh show the pup how to sculpt with chocolate. Maybe this time it’ll work out.
9) At Your Fingertips | Explicit | 27,399 words
He finds himself wrapped up in sheets in bed on Thursday night, staring at the familiar name on a new story that was posted the night before. His fingers twitch, ready to hit play and surrender to his impulses, saving the regret and turmoil for later. And still he hesitates, internally praying that he’ll somehow gain the strength to exit out within the next few moments before he inevitably loses his patience and hits the button. Three… Two… One. Play.
10) Tis the Season for...Love? | Mature | 27,920 words
Louis might just be what Harry's needed all along.
11) Short And Sweet | Explicit | 29,658 words
Louis is a shy university student in a world scarce of male omegas. He's always dreamt of having an alpha despite his sheltered upbringing, fantasizing about being loved and cared for. He's immediately smitten by the mysterious alpha with curly hair, broad shoulders, and the addictive coffee scent.
12) Welcome Home | Explicit | 49,417 words
Louis Tomlinson had to put a stop to his football career for a couple of months and he decided to go back home to rest his mind for a little bit only to find out a really weird coffee shop owner started to visit his mother on a regular basis with just as peculiar but lovely kid named Maxine.
13) Taken Over By The Feeling | Mature | 53,654 words
After almost a year of increasingly troubling behavior, Louis agrees to let his sister live with him. It's a last resort before more drastic measures are taken by their mom. Harry Styles runs Given A Chance, a program for troubled and disadvantaged teens out of the bakery he owns. He offers the kids in his program what he believes they need to start on a different and better path for their lives. Louis learns all too quickly that Harry's goodwill does not extend to him. Only because he happens to remind Harry of an ex he'd rather forget. It's not the smoothest of beginnings, but in the end Louis' own issues might be the real problem.
14) Beachwood Cafe | Mature | 63,562 words
The AU where Louis works in a cute little beachside cafe after running away from his problems and Harry is the tall handsome stranger who makes him question everything.
15) Wild Thing | Mature | 65,950 words
Harry doesn’t think love is for him, until Louis shows him just how wild love is.
16) Alpha's Sweet Omega | Not Rated | 66,133 words
Every soulmark differs from Alpha to Beta to Omega. It’s like a puzzle piece that connects you to your soulmate. Some legends from the ancient times say that when you have an aching soulmark, you’re close in finding your mate, and you’ll know that it is your mate when the scent transcends and entices you. And the pain in the mark will subside when you touch your mate. But what if you are already bounded to someone who is not your Alpha? Does social status matter? Will an Alpha fight for his rightful place and win the love of his Omega? The story of love and facing the odds. Making the impossible possible. The things you will do for Love...
17) Pinkies Never Lie | Explicit | 83,615 words
AU in which Louis hates his job and loves Harry, Harry just wants a distraction, everyone else wants them to get their shit together, and Louis learns the hard way that new beginnings are only possible when something ends.
Check out our other fic rec lists by category here and by title here.

Hi!! I hope I'm not disturbing you but I wanted to ask how do I work hard. Because when I was younger I got really good marks without trying and now the subjects are hard and social media is distracting but I can't seem to delete it. This is also why my grades are even low then before and I'm really afraid to disappoint my parents (being the eldest daughter doesn't help). So can you please just give me some pointers on how can I actually study and not just cry because I don't know how to. Have a great day!! <3
literally omg. is this past me asking me a question?? like actually u have no idea how much i relate and understand this. the "gifted child" who always got good grades without needing to study now finds things more difficult. i know many people have said this, but i actually have been through this not too long ago. i hope these tips help <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
how to work hard + actually study (realistic)
Tumblr media
forget hard work. at least do the work! (its so funny because i literally had a post about this all ready in my drafts about to get posted, so i'll keep this short and link the post.) stop focussing on doing hard work like studying 24/7. just put in the basic necessities you need to get a better grade. hard work post link
use the disappointment and embarrassment as fuel. (basically find a very strong why) (mini story-ish thing coming up, skip to the blue text for the actual advice) i still remember the day i got such a bad score on my math and science test, i was FURIOUS at myself and i cried about it! telling it to my parents was one of the hardest things i had to do and feeling their disappointment was even worse. but that became my turning point. i was so ashamed of myself and i resented me so much that i basically just told myself "i dont freaking care what you feel *with distaste*. you brought this on yourself you failure" (a bit very harsh, yes i know) but the way i studied that week- i studied more than i every had before! also doing this doesnt really lower my self esteem a whole lot, but if it does with you, please be gentle with yourself. : so what i'm trying to say it; use that feeling of shame and disapointment as a fuel, a motivation. The big “why”.
ALTER EGOOOSSSS. this helps SOOOO MUCH its so underrated. embody the energy of your fav people who are the academic inspiration you wanna be! example: rory gilmore, paris geller, elle woods, blair waldorf, etc etc! not only is this so helpful but it also makes it so much more fun and easier!!
parent yourself. i used to tell myself to do stuff like "go study now!" or "get up lazy-butt" but in my mind. but what if you tried to say those stuff out loud to yourself? it just creates a whole new level of real. So start telling yourself to do stuff out loud.
honestly just start. stop letting yourself think about how "uncomfortable" and how "annoying" it will be. All you need to know is that you need to get it done. Right? Ok. So now what’s the next smallest step you can take to getting to do the unwanted task? It may be taking out your material, opening your book, etc.
Tumblr media
( !! tough love, but very important rant coming up)
You privileged brat. Your parents gave up EVERYTHING so you could have the education that you are having. They worked so so hard for YOU. So YOU can have the life you want. And all for what? Just for you to throw it all away and say “oh im lazy”. HELL NAH.
And also, do you realise how fortunate you are to be even living in such a time/ era where you have access to basically EVERYTHING? You’re stuck on something? You could easily search it up!! And whats more is that you can further learn. You can search up and find out more about the thing that you’re studying, become the smartest person in your class, get so ahead in life. I hope you realise that if you do use all the resources and materials and help that’s been given to you, just imagine how far you could go! Further than Albert Einstine, Elon Musk, etc. you may be like “what! No that’s gonna be too hard!” But did they have the tools that you have right at your hand? No! They made it all the way with just simple stuff and having to work super hard. But you live in a time where you can do TWICE as much without working as hard!!
And one more thing, QUIT WHINING. “Oh school is so hard!” “Oh school is so boring!” Like whattt???? You are so FORTUNATE and LUCKY to be even getting access to such education! MILLIONS of kids out there would kill to be able to learn what you are so easily dismissing right now. So TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WHAT YOU HAVE. Put your ALL, your very BEST into studying and getting good grades because THAT is whats gonna take you so SO far in life.
Thank you very much, *mic drop*. (i still ly pookie)

dealing with social media:
put the screen time widget on your phone home screen. i did this, and i became so embarrassed by the amount of screen time i had in one day (*cough* 12 hours *cough*) that i made certain to stop using it as much.
screen time limits. this may or may not help you, bc i know that when i knew the screen time password, it didn't do a lot of help but when someone else did (like parents or someone you trust), then it definitely worked. this is probably only best if you're a child around under 14 ish bc thats around the age when most parents put screen time limits + after that age you're gonna be a lot more independent.

So I just finished Gilmore Girls for the first time and boy, do I have some thoughts:
First of all, I love this show so much. More than I ever thought I would. It’s just so comforting. I totally get it now.
Now, for specifics.
Lorelai:
I love Lorelai. She does make some dumb choices, but in the end, she’s just so loveable and fun, I can’t help but adore her.
Rory:
I do not get the hate I’ve seen for Rory! Yes, like her mom, she makes stupid decisions, but she’s so wonderful. Maybe it’s just because I relate to her so closely, but I love Rory so much.
Luke:
Ughhhh I love love love Luke. He’s so unexpectedly hilarious sometimes?? I did not foresee that when I started. Scott Patterson is also strangely one of the best actors on the show, which I also did not expect. Luke is a gem, we love him.
Luke & Lorelai:
How could you not love these two together? They’re absolutely perfect for each other and the pining, especially on Luke’s part, makes for incredible television. I do think their dynamic kind of lost the really special ‘will they, won’t they’ tension after season 1/2, but I still ship them. So glad they ended up together. When she was still with Christopher near the end of season 7, I got a little worried.
Paris:
PARIS IS GAY. I will accept nothing less. She is queer in some way, whether she’s a lesbian or bi. She had absolutely no chemistry with any of her love interests but so much with Rory. Also she’s just amazing all around. I fucking love Paris. Make her queer, cowards.
Lane:
How could you not love Lane? She’s the absolute shit. Cool, supportive, loyal, and a fucking rockstar. I didn’t mind her with Zach to begin with (even though I thought it was a bit strange how they all of a sudden liked each other), but when they got married and had kids, that was a big nope for me. Lane Kim deserved to be a famous rockstar.
Emily & Richard:
I went back and forth on these two. On one hand, they’re very entertaining characters and I do believe they’re trying to do what they think is best, but on the other, I think in the end they do more harm than good. The way they dismiss Lorelai’s trauma, and completely disregard everyone else’s opinion because they assume they automatically know what’s best, just rubs me the wrong way. Not to mention the manipulation and the going behind people’s backs. I think there should’ve been an arc at the end where they finally listened to Lorelai and acknowledged what they’d done and tried to change for the better.
Sookie:
Melissa McCarthy is great in everything, and this is no exception. She’s so sweet and lovable, and such a good friend to Lorelai. I love her. Plus her relationship with Jackson is just lovely.
Michel:
He’s such a sarcastic bitch and I love him. I think that’s all there is to say.
The Townies and Side Characters:
Kirk - Kirk is maybe the funniest part of the show and such a little sweetheart, I love him so much.
Babette - aka the best neighbour ever. We deserved even more of her and Morey than we got.
Miss Patty - same goes for Patty! We need more Patty!
Taylor - annoying and obnoxious but the show wouldn’t be the same without him. Irreplaceable.
Gypsy - again, we needed more!! Gypsy was so funny and I just wanted more!
April - I love April! She’s so sweet. I don’t, however, like what her arrival did to Luke and Lorelai’s relationship, and I fucking hate Anna.
Christopher - I don’t hate him, but he’s definitely not one of my favourites. I think it would’ve been a lot better if he and Lorelai had just been really close friends, or if he had just been fully out of the picture.
And finally, the boys:
Dean:
FUCK. DEAN. Do I need to say more? He’s a toxic, possessive, asshole and I hate him. He was okay in the beginning, but the ‘50s episode really clinched my hatred for him. Huge nope from me. What a dick.
Logan:
Man, do I hate Logan. Obviously not as bad as Dean, but he’s such a douchebag!! I genuinely cannot stand him or put up with any of his bullshit. I thought he would grow on me as the show went on but no, I only hated him more.
Jess:
Best for last. My love for this man knows no bounds. Obviously the best fit for Rory, I love them together, but also his relationship with Luke is so great. Also, justice for his and Rory’s relationship while they were dating!! Why did we only get to see it when shit hit the fan? They kept mentioning how they were going to hang out, that they were meeting up later on, so why didn’t we get to see any of it? Why did we only get to see them when Jess fucked up? I hate that. I also hate that they didn’t end up together, even when Jess grew and changed and bettered himself. Anyway, I just love him. I could talk about him forever.
A Year in the Life:
They tried to fit 22 episodes worth of Gilmore Girls into 4 episodes, and it didn’t work. The first episode did an okay job, and I did kind of love the last episode (the wedding!), but the middle two were. . . yikes. No theme song/opening titles? No transitions? NO SOOKIE EXCEPT FOR ONE SCENE AT THE END? Michel thinking about leaving the inn and Lorelai being abandoned by both of her friends? No Jackson? Rory being with an engaged Logan? Basically no Jess except for a few scenes, one of which broke my heart? I could go on forever.
That being said, they should make more after the cliffhanger they left us on. I’ll take whatever I can get, even if it’s subpar.
Anyway those are just a few of my many thoughts about this show. I can’t believe I waited until now to watch it. I need someone to talk about this show with so if you see this and want to talk, DM me.

I'm so glad that someone else loves Rory! What would you name as her three best qualities? There's so much focus on her flaws and mistakes, but I think she has so many positive qualities too, so I'm trying to spread positivity :) I'll always love and relate to her.
Hi!! I agree so much- I love Rory so much and it makes me sad when people say she’s the worst or the villain (a longer rant I won’t give here but I think there’s a lot of shows that do not HAVE a villain- like in a show like Gilmore girls I feel that the main villain is the concept of pride-
Back to Rory!
1. She is an amazing friend (starting with this because it grinds my gears that I’ve seen so many lists about what a horrible friend she is. But she does so much to help Lane when they’re in high school to get around Mrs Kim’s rules and yes she has moments where she is human and distracted but by and large she does so much and cares for Lane- and then Paris- who literally ends her friendship with Rory over something Rory didn’t actually do THREE separate times throughout the course of the show- Paris who walked up to Rory when she first met her and said you’re a loser I’ll always be better than you and by all accounts Rory is better in school but she knows it would hurt Paris to hear that and is protective of Paris’s feelings even when Paris mistreats her ie she doesn’t tell Paris her PSAT scores because she knows Paris couldn’t take knowing Rory’s scores were better- and then when Paris (who again takes a moment out of her day to unnecessarily antagonize Rory that she’s such a loser who will never beat Paris and then Paris finds she didn’t get into the school she wanted Rory doesn’t gloat or even tell her about it- she goes over to tell Paris how smart she is and to get out of bed and get back to her life (like dealing with Paris that alone makes Rory a saint)
2. In general Rory treats people with respect- like compare how she is the editor of the Yale daily news or the summer tutoring thing to how Paris does it- Paris who thinks that being editor of a college newspaper means that she can tell people they don’t have the right to go to the bathroom or be addressed by name, whereas Rory generally treats people with respect (which may seem like a low bar, and you can tell Paris isn’t my favorite character but I can’t figure out how Paris is such a beloved character these days it’s like Paris abuses waiters in canon- like that is literally in an episode I don’t understand how Paris is so popular)
3. And this is the biggest one- Rory will realize when she has made a mistake and try to fix it (and I am talking more about the og seven seasons cause I don’t think that AYITL did anyone any favors lol) but Rory is so young in the og series and she makes big mistakes but she realizes where she went wrong and tries to fix it (compare this to Paris who never acknowledges she has done anything wrong- like Paris is the “I have never done anything wrong ever in my life meme” embodied) and Rory makes mistakes because she’s human and she’s young but she tries so hard to fix them-
Just my opinion but I feel that Rory is a good person with such a kind heart and this gets overlooked very much
Thank you for the ask!! 🥰🥰

THOUGHTS WHILE WATCHING GILMORE GIRLS: SEASON 3, EPISODE 2: HAUNTED LEG (PART 2)
Both Emily and Lorelai are planning to attend Rory's "Swearing In" for her Vice Presidency at Chilton So, this is a very similar scenario to the one that happened 4 episodes back in "Lorelai's Graduation Day". Yes ma'am, it's another "Lorelai is unhappy about having to be at a place where her mother will also be but Rory wants them both there" situation. Yeehaw.
Tumblr media
Shhh. Nobody tell her.
Tumblr media
This is such a great line, and I don't fancy myself much of a Quote Lover, but I love this one so much I want to make it a magnet and stick it on my fridge next to my "Why did you drop out of Yale" magnet.
Nothing of great consequence or interest happens at the ceremony. Rory and Paris give mediocre speeches. Things between Lor and Emily are still chilly. Emily wants to meet Lorelai for lunch at Luke’s the next day. I see Francie up on stage and remember, tis the season for an incredibly boring storyline involving mean-girl nonsense and school politics 🥱 Francie is the Jason of S3.
I plan to forward past a lot of that sillyness and save myself some time.
Rory tells Paris after the first student body meeting that she wasted everyone’s time and nothing was accomplished and nobody ate the doughnuts that were provided. Paris is incredibly turned on and asks Rory if she wants to get married.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just more Jess erasure... Alright, alright! This was Sookie's directive (supposedly) and it was said in jest. And here I was about to cancel Lorelai again for banning Jess from her stupid inn filled with mice. I've canceled her more times than an unwanted subscription to Dean Forrester Monthly magazine.
Tumblr media
Not me going "what is this stupid obscure reference that nobody will understand", then googling it only to find out it's from The Godfather, the award winning book and movie series that half the population alive has seen but not me. I don't watch movies, okay?
Tumblr media
Yes Ma'am!
Tumblr media
I hate this stupid bullshit. Blew past the entire scene.
Tumblr media
That's more like it.
Tumblr media
Luke: Kirk came to me for advice about whether or not he had a shot with you. I told him you liked movies and junk food and talking incessantly but we both agreed that there's nothing like some good lovin to shut someone up." So then you agree, the only thing that would get Lorelai to shut up is to fuck her? Take your own advice already, Sir, and do it already. You're killing us here. Lorelai: Can you bring me a sharper fork? I'm not sure this one will go through your hand. Ah, I see that like me, Lorelai is also a connoisseur of making jokes about injuring people with forks. We're not that different, you and I.
Tumblr media
What the hell else is there to do for fun in Stars Hollow?
Tumblr media
More Crusty nonsense. Followed by student council nonsense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well if that isn't the Non Privacy And Feelings Respecter Pot calling the Non Privacy And Feelings Respecter Kettle black.
Tumblr media
At least Santa Claus visits his Children once a year, which is more than Christopher does.
Tumblr media
Not me and @frazzledsoul discussing just yesterday how often answering machines were used as a plot device on tv in the 90's and early 00's. AmyShermanPalladino in particular is obsessed with the humble answering machine. Because social media didn't exist yet and the male characters must have some way to harrass the women when they're apart. At least It's only Kirk this time so he probably meant well. Probably. He's kinda a perv. Lorelai: i hate my life. Maybe if we look into each other's eyes and say "I wish I were you" we could pull a Freaky Friday. (Imagining I'm me, Salty, and NOT Rory, Freaky Friday'ing with Lorelai): Let's see, let's see switching lives with Lorelai: The whole "fucking Luke" thing is good But then I'd also have to fuck Dean And I'd have to fuck Crusty.. Max? (eh?) Alex? (sure) Have Emily as my mother... Working at a dumb Inn... Idk if having sex with Luke is worth all that. Rory: "If we switched bodies, I'd have to date Kirk." If you switched bodies, Lorelai would have to date Dean. I don't hear her complaining about that.
Tumblr media
The real star of Gilmore Girls.
Tumblr media
Oh no. Not the LOR.
Tumblr media
*smashes that bottle of wine over Crusty's head*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
45? FORTY FIVE? He tripled the record held by the previous contender. Dean better step his harrasment game up if he wants to surpass that number. Crusty: "You don't get to dictate what to do! I called you (45 times) and you didn't respond so I did what I had to do. You can't shut me out, that's wrong! Your'e keeping Rory from me! Why hasn't she called me back?" EXCUSE ME? EXCUSE MEEEE??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my, the whiplash of seeing Rory stand up for herself and get into Crusty's face, only to have her head to Doose's in a few moments where Jess will give her the peg-lowering of a lifetime and she'll limp away defeated with her tail between her legs. I'll put that in my next chapter. Things Googled While Watching Gilmore Girls: Clemenza, I Take A Nap Gif, Now Kiss Gif, Spelling Of Connoisseur Cutting Room Floor A joke about how Jess won't be invited to any more Bracebridge Dinners since he's vegetarian and he's banned from the inn.

It's so frustrating how people want to blame everything on Rory. Everything that went wrong in her relationships people want to fully blame on Rory.
I have literally been seeing people say things like "When Rory said no to Logan I was done with her after that" or when Dean was yelling at Rory in front of Paris saying "She deserved it" and I saw someone blaming Rory for everything that went wrong in her relationship with Dean and how "horrible" she treated him. I've even seen a lot of people say "I hate Rory for saying no to Jess" or will say "Rory actually cheated on Logan and she hurt Jess"
First of all Rory is not obligated to say yes to Logan if she wasn't ready to get married that is perfectly okay and Understandable. She also wasn't obligated to be with Jess I love that boy but he really hurt her and she had every right to say no to to wanting to run away with him. They both needed time to grow and that absolutely was not the right time.
Dean had no right to yell at Rory. He wouldn't even let her explain herself, Dean was always yelling at Rory and never let her explain herself anytime. He completely ignored her wanting space and to have a night to herself and the reason she lied was clearly because she was terrified to make him mad because she was so used to him blowing up on her all the time. That was her literally walking on egg shells around him not because she was trying to cheat on him. I don't care what Rory did his actions were not okay. Y'all Rory anti's let your hatred of her cloud your judgement.
People will say how terrible Rory treated Dean because "she was stringing him along and cheated on him with Jess" if anything she tried to force herself not to have feelings for Jess and when she kissed him it was an impulse she didn't mean to do it have you never been young before and been in a relationship and got feelings for someone else? Like that's totally a normal teenager thing that most teenagers experience. She didn't know how to get out of her first relationship which is so very real for a lot of people, and not to mention how much Lorelai loved Dean. Rory never had any intentions of cheating on Dean but his actions pushed her away with being possessive and explosive all the time!
Don't even get me started on the people that try to say Rory cheated on Logan please he literally slept with an entire bridal party and invalidated her feelings and gaslit her over the whole thing I don't want to hear a word about how she kissed Jess when Logan hooked up with a bunch of girls behind Rory's back and completely disregard how she felt! Rory didn't mean to hurt Jess either she cares so much for him but she also still has feelings for Logan and at least she felt bad about it, Logan didn't even feel bad about what he did or care that he hurt her!
It feels like people put Rory into this box and when she doesn't act in a way that they want her too they get mad and instantly hate her like she's not aloud to make mistakes otherwise she's horrible but if she didn't make mistakes and did everything perfectly people would say she was boring and unrealistic. I don't get it yes Rory made mistakes like all of the characters but she does not deserve the hate she gets from the fandom and I stand by that! I'm so over to Rory hate!

I was tagged by @talesofruby01. Thanks for the tag!
I did six fandoms, because at first I could only think of three and then I thought of six. Oh well.
Gilmore Girls - Jess Mariano and Paris Geller

Explanations on my choices under the cut! You're about to find out way too much about me via the blorbos :)
Gilmore Girls - Jess Mariano and Paris Geller
Criminally robbed of the besties bonus points I deserve...
Jess Mariano is my character of all time. I'll fight you. The highlights: Jess comes from an abusive, loveless family situation and is a bit prickly from the ordeal (both to himself and others), but is just such a goodhearted and hardworking person that he gets out the other side with both loving relationships (with himself and others) and a good, safe life that he’s built for himself. Character of all time!!! Who does it for us like Jess Mariano?
Paris is incredibly ambitious and a little bit of a bitch (in a cool, sexy way), and therefore I love her. Also, your honor she’s a repressed lesbian. These things happen. And I will never get over how quickly she comes to understand Marxist theory when working her first job. She was never a snob; she literally was just never exposed to anything outside the upper-class.
My man Jess would have helped her with that and it would have been amazing. And he would have been comfortable living in that scary apartment with her (and Doyle) and Rory.
Gossip Girl - Serena van der Woodsen and Jenny Humphrey
When I have to shorthand my self, I say "I'm a Serena van der Woodsen type". The only reason I relate more to her than Jess in terms of self is because Serena and I shared the incredible lows of teenage girldom (plus we’re both exceptionally beautiful). Also, Jess never did drugs (cigarettes count, but they don't, also I don't think they were really a habit). Good for him! Don't do drugs! Serena definitely did drugs, and she started them (and boys, who don’t love her but sure do think she’s pretty!) very young. The incredible lows of teenage girldom... and how they stick to you into womanhood... She tries so hard to “change” when really she needs to change her situation, but that’s the struggle... How do you leave everyone and everything you’ve ever loved? And even if you could, is there really anywhere on earth you can escape the incredible lows of girldom/womanhood?
Which brings me to Jenny Humphrey. I’m not even gonna start on the incredible lows of teenage girldom because just watch the show, my poor girl... ANYWAY! Did I mention that I love seeing ambition in girls and women? She’s the living embodiment of going after what you want, *and she’s earned it*. She becomes Queen, not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES, and it was only sort of on purpose once!! And do not get me started on her high school fashion career. It kills me that her family wasn’t more supportive, but I know she’ll be successful because literally no one and nothing could ever stop her. And, I know this one is probably a hot take, but I honestly think she’s a really good person. She fights against the corrupting force of the UES better than most, and she is a really sweet and earnest person when she feels safe enough to just be herself.
Yellowjackets - Jackie Taylor and Shauna Sadecki née Shipman
Bonus points: They're in love! (Yes, present tense.)
Talking about teenage girldom and how it sticks to you into womanhood... I could write essays, but I'll just say this. Jackie is my favorite. She's most of us (I say assuming my experiences are universal). She is the metaphor for what happens when you devote yourself to the role assigned at teenage girlhood (it makes you repressed, i.e. the death of the self).
Shauna is a metaphor for all the fight it takes to survive teenage girldom into womanhood, and how it's a never-ending fight (she's the friend/lover, she's the mother/daughter, she's the hater/butcher/killer).
Teenage girldom is traumatic experience and it colors your adulthood, and that's the show, but also these two characters are the clearest metaphors on that main theme. Everything is a metaphor!!! Also, they're both sides of the repressed sapphic romantic-friendship. Hard relate, my girls!
TMMM - Luke Kirby's Lenny Bruce and Astrid Weissman
Some of you may be asking, Why not Midge? Why not Susie? Well, this is my list and I do what I want.
Luke Kirby's Lenny Bruce needs no explanation. He is the dream man. He's earnest and exceptionally romantic, and there's something about him you can't help find admirable to the point of inspirational. Maybe it's that he's brave and honest. Maybe it's that he's ambitious in that way that's hard to be as a woman. Maybe he's just really charming, because he's that for sure. But, of course, he's a mess too. Who isn't?
Astrid Weissman! She's so so so funny. She's not trying to be funny. She's not making jokes. She's just delightful! Also, all of us out there swimming in cultures that are not those in-which we were raised. Astrid Weissman has got you with her over-correcting, overcompensating, and just sheer enthusiasm. You go, Astrid!
The Vampire Diaries - Elena Gilbert and Katerina/Katherine Petrova/Peirce
Bonus points: They're related/doppelgangers!
UGH! If they aren’t the dichotomy of self, idk what is!!!
Elena is *such* a good person. She is literally the martyr she is such a good person. She loves and she will die for that love. That’s Elena. But it’s all about circumstances. Elena is an orphan (she had a beautiful, loving family before they died) suffering from survivor’s guilt, and she’s mostly keeping herself together with her love for her loved ones. If she isn’t living for them, she’s just gonna disappear.
Now, Katerina/Katherine, she’s got kind of the opposite thing going on. She had her newborn baby she loved very much ripped from her arms before being disowned by her family and banished from her hometown. She has no one who loves her and no one to love. She holds herself together with love of self or she’s just gonna disappear. And that she does. She is a ruthless pragmatist, because she has to be to survive. Because the world is harsh and cruel (and frankly really sexist), but she’s clever and strong, and she survives. That’s what she does. Elena dies for you. Katerina/Katherine survives despite you. Everything is a metaphor!!! My favorite thing about Katerina/Katherine is that she doesn’t *just* survive. No, she *loves* life. She’ll literally be being held captive by a vampire who has been hunting her relentlessly for hundreds of years, and she’ll take a moment alone in the house to drink and dance, because what’s a spare moment if it’s not being lived? Life is not just about survival.
THG - Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark
Bonus points: They're basically soulmates!
Here's the thing. Katniss is a survivor/pragmatist with zero social skills, but an endless and earnest pit of love and enough passion to literally fuel a revolution.
Peeta is a child abuse victim who has learned to wield social manipulation (the charm offensive! plus literally lying!), but hasn't met an honest expression of emotion in his life (until he figures he's about to die so he might as well tell Katniss she's pretty) and doesn't know how to receive love.
They literally just fit each other. Peeta is charming when Katniss literally cannot. Katniss helps him survive when he's literally dying in a river camouflaged in mud and plants. But most importantly, Peeta teaches Katniss how to live in more than just survival mode, and Katniss reaches into her deep well of love and teaches Peeta how to be loved. Everything is a metaphor, but your honor, they are the couple of all time!!!

Thoughts about Jess really make me go into all sort of tangents lol. Cause like, while I was watching the first season I was talking with my mom about how small towns are portrayed in media.
It's something I've been paying extra attention to a lot lately, since I'm writing njabbic, and growing up in a small town (technically a village actually) is a big part of Aria's backstory and what shaped her into who she is. And in my story, the small town is portrayed very negatively, which I feel is very common. It's the whole "small town, small minds" thing, which is something that gets repeated in njabbic a lot. Just that the smaller the population is the less diversity there's gonna be, and then when someone is different it really stands out. Also if everyone knows everyone, there's really no place to escape. You can't be anonymous. Also since njabbic takes place in the 90s when they didn't have internet, there's really not much to do where Aria lives except gossip, which only makes the problems worse.
And there's also idea that small towns are limiting. Aria has always had big dreams and a longing for adventure, which none of her peers share and find her strange for having. Her dreams are literally bigger than her home, which is why she feels trapped.
And then there's the positive side of things, which is a lot of what Stars Hollow feels like in the beginning. Where the small size of the population and everyone knowing everyone results in a really tight knit community. Like a really big family with all that small town charm as well. Also the fact that like every resident is super weird and eccentric somehow (affectionate for everyone except Taylor).
And in the first season, this is mainly how Stars Hallow is portrayed (they even have an entire plot line where Paris tries to discover the town's "dark side" and it's meant to be funny because it doesn't have one), but when Jess enters in season 2 it shows aspects of the town that aligns with that first example (here's your story Paris). And I think it's interesting that the world is afforded this complexity, and what it says about how these portrayals differ because of who's telling the story. Cause if Jess had been the main character of the show it most definitely would've been portrayed as example number 1. I don't know, it's just about how people and places are complex and one's perfect blah blah.
Oh yes, definitely! Gilmore Girls always does that thing where they simultaneously confirm a stereotype and demolish it, which I've mentioned before. It's all about the perspective and it's lovely to see that same manner of writing applied to the characters. The problem (well, one of the problems) with a tight-knit community is that they don't do so well with change and what's so heartbreaking about their treatment of Jess is that it's more of a treatment of this caricature, a made up character with this boy's face, personification of unpleasant aspects of change. But naturally, everything they say and do inevitably affects him and messes with his self image which wasn't too positive to start with. And then you have Rory!!! Who deals with the opposite issue, but it's an issue that comes from the same source which makes Rory and Jess the perfect reflections of each other. Jess is only ever associated with failure, Rory is never allowed to fail which leads to her actual mistakes being regarded as the mistakes of this other, made up Rory because the real Rory can't possibly afford to be anything other than an angel, anything other than the nice, good kid. (I have to recommend @jonismitchell 's beautiful writing piece that deals with the struggles of being "the cool girl". One of the best writing pieces I've ever encountered and while it doesn't deal with Gilmore Girls specifically, I think it's still relevant to the subject.) Re: see how Rory's treated after the car accident. I think that situation perfectly reflects the different ways in which the town exaggerates a singular trait these young people possess (or have appeared to possess) and only see them through that lens. That's why, to find comfort and understanding, Jess and Rory always have to be away from the town somehow, sometimes even physically. (the bridge, New York, the empty diner) It functions as a metaphor for the world they created prompted by each other's presence where they can not only be who they are, but also REALISE for the first time that they aren't this one unchangeable point in time and space. (This is where I talk about how romanticism is Literati's historical movement.) That they aren't only capable of changing, but that there's more to them right now, in the moment of speaking. Jess questions Rory's lifelong dream, she questions his predictions about his future. Maybe he doesn't only have to work to survive, maybe he can work to survive and love the work that he does. Which means a lot, someone seeing that kind of potential in you, when your whole life so far has been about holding onto the edges of the world that doesn't love you and trying to preserve against whatever lies behind existence, all that on your own. (Rory doesn't get enough credit for her unwavering faith in people and the ability to focus on the good in them.)
But the town loves Rory, and she loves her town. She loves Stars Hollow. It's small and everybody knows everybody and she's loved. Well, the person she thinks she should be is loved. But still, it's love because love is not fixed in stone the way that Rory's future is. So she's always torn between satisfying everybody else and satisfying herself and the former always seems like a better option because a part of her doesn't want to be anything except the person that she should be, the fixed point, the ideal. That other choice would acquire change and a complete reexamination of her identity. (this is what makes Jess's progress soooo good) Who else is reluctant when it comes to change? Small towns. But Rory's dreams are big, she wants to travel and see the world the same way Little Women's Amy March does. ("I was impatient, I wanted to get out into the world.") How do you accomplish both the internal AND external peace when your own self feeds on contradiction?
So Amy sailed away to find the old world, which is always new and beautiful to young eyes, while her father and friend watched her from the shore, fervently hoping that none but gentle fortunes would befall the happy-hearted girl, who waved her hand to them till they could see nothing but the summer sunshine dazzling on the sea.
I really love it when places are shown to parallel people because there's a whole entire world in all of us, but the common mistake is pursuing this one place per person logic. Because often times, the world within you doesn't exactly match anything external perfectly. It's more like a mosaic of different places and it just keeps building itself, it's a city and a little town and a person. A speck of dust burdened by being larger than life. I think that's why it's often said that home is found in others because you're more likely to find similarities or understanding between two collages of experience, no matter how different the pieces they're made out of are, the concept their presence relies on is the same. Just... places changing the people and people changing the places. They always end up painted one over the other and you can rarely tell which one came first.

hey! rory gilmore anon here. i really appreciate you reading all my thoughts and after reading yours, i definitely agree with you. it would have been interesting to see her privileges be taken away from her, as we could have witnessed rory being forced to grow as a character... it makes me think of how paris in s6(?) loses all her family's wealth and was still able to be paris and stay driven to succeed. where rory, maybe not so much. but you're right, we never get to see anything like that.
i think i'm also partly in denial about the revival. i understand to a point that amy sherman palladino didn't write season 7 and thus used the revival to write what she originally wanted to happen her way (why else would luke and lorelai wait that long to get married? and apparently not have given it a single thought until the revival?), and that there were budget cuts, but i'm really confused why she made rory's character so stagnant and still making the same mistakes. the last episode of the revival sets her up to finally being in a place to make different choices (at least i hope), but then we don't get to see any of it. it's just... bleh.
weirdly, the ending felt like a setup for more episodes, even though it was a struggle as is to make the revival work (from what i've read about the rushed production). i've seen some fans theorize that amy sherman palladino doesn't even like rory that much and that's why her character seems to continuously fail so much without something being made of it. and now that you've pointed out how not great that it is from a watcher's standpoint, i remember another creator mentioning that as well when talking about how amy doesn't let us see rory succeed/change for long. which is perplexing to me, but oh well. as i get farther and farther away from how young i was when i first watched the show, the more my opinion on the show and its characters evolves.
from an audience standpoint i wish the show had made more out of her mistakes. if they absolutely had to show rory being the same person in her 30s, i wish it had made more sense than simply coming across as if all the characters had been frozen in time. i badly want to root for all the characters (excluding chris) and rory, damn it lol
Yes! Exactly. And I feel like I should say- I do really like Rory. I always have. I think she's very relatable and I just want to see her be her best self. But I think that's what's so frustrating about the show for viewers- a lot of them love her and just want to see her grow and learn and mature, but she never gets to even though the other characters do. For example, I think Lorelai gets a lot of character development. At the beginning of the show, she's someone who doesn't really know how to trust other people. She runs away from her feelings and she runs away from situations the minute they get difficult. She's scared of commitment and of what her family represents. But by the end of the show, she does trust people. She stays even when things are getting hard, and she's made a huge commitment (getting married to Luke). She's on much better terms with her family. It feels like we got some payoff with everything she went through. And that's much more satisfying as a viewer.

would love to hear your gilmore girls s6 thoughts!
lmao i don't even know where to begin i have so many! let's bullet point it
so i can see why people point to this season as the beginning of the downfall of rory gilmore. girl crumbled after someone said one mean thing to her, immediately committed a felony and dropped out of school. that said, i did like that storyline for her, it was interesting, but. i was definitely on lorelai's side. i think rory behaved pretty badly throughout that storyline – and frankly throughout the season. i feel like the only person who points out that the scene with rory/richard at the end of s5 was a pretty manipulative scene on her part, but i also feel like the show agrees with me, since they point it out several times lmao. like, that girl realllllly did not want to face any consequences, and so she went to the person who would guarantee that for her.
in general, i do think the writing has gone downhill, and that’s in large part due to so much of so many episodes being dedicated to antics instead of actual storylines. side characters have been getting broader and broader. it feels like everyone aside from rory, logan, luke, lorelai, emily, and richard are basically operating at kirk levels of zaniness. one kirk is fine but they can’t all be kirk, you know?
i think that could have been solved by giving side characters meaningful arcs. which means it’s time to talk about the paris of it all. they’ve fully bastardized paris and i could not be more disappointed. she’s my favorite character on the show, and i think it’s wild that instead of showing her grow or have any arc, they’ve regressed her to being socially inept. like can you imagine s6 paris leading madeline and louise around and running things at chilton? paris has always been intense and frank and kinda mean, but she’s not like. terrible with everyone. the running joke that everyone secretly hates paris was really mean-spirited, especially considering how long she’s been on the show. they had a storyline in which rory publicly clarified to a room of ppl who she knows hates paris that she does not consider herself paris’ best friend.
i will say they got better at writing for her again by the end of the season. but i feel like they could give her an arc in which she’s confronted by the fact that a lot of other students at yale are as driven and smart as she is. she claims that rory is her only real competition but get real. they go to YALE. are you expecting me to believe that rory is the smallest person here?
also they could have given her a meaningful romantic subplot a la lane/dave, instead of just dumb comedic fodder with doyle. (i say this even though im a parisrory but).
SPEAKING OF LANE, the way they wrote the breakup with dave was WILDLY bad. so contrived. i don’t think they ever gave the storyline with lane & her mother the kind of weight it needed, and i’m disappointed by what seems to be a very long slow character assassination.
also. hot hot take about logan/rory. i prefer jess and jess/rory mostly because i think that was a better, more interesting story and i was therefore more emotionally invested. that said, i do happen to think logan treats rory better than any of her other boyfriends did. and yes, that includes the sort of cheating storyline. i can go more in depth if u want, but i do firmly believe this to be true. (logan himself i find kinda smug/smarmy, but i don’t mind him. i do think that’s what rory is looking for right now, and it’s kind of a signal of her embracing her grandparents’ lifestyle.)
finally, the luke/lorelai of it all. oh BOY am i sad. the april storyline was RIDICULOUSLY contrived. april herself is a fun kid, but i see no reason why her existence should make luke have to postpone the wedding?? the show could never give a reason. how does april prevent luke from committing to lorelai? and why wouldn’t lorelai say anything? they both acted really out of character in order to make that work as a complication. and it just didn’t. (i also don’t love how the first few episodes of season 7 seem to be letting luke off the hook just bc lorelai slept with chris. like you wouldn’t let her into your life!! that’s why u broke up!! not bc she slept with chris or bc u “weren’t right for each other”!!)
i feel like they wrote this partly bc ASP didn’t know what to write. i think that explains the antics-heavy season, dumb side plots and april fiasco. they could have given paris a meaningful arc in that time, but they didn’t. and what they COULD have done with luke/lorelai is just…. give them a kid!! i say this as someone who is not super crazy about baby storylines typically, but on gilmore girls you could do SO MUCH with it. you get rory dealing with a sibling after being her mom’s whole world for her entire life, you get emily and richard getting a second chance at being there from the beginning, you get lorelai having a kid with a stable life and support system, and you get luke and lorelai navigating parenthood together. so much potential tragically wasted and i’ll never get over it.
also…… i’m only on 7x03, but i can’t believe luke/lorelai get married in AYITL…. a full twenty years after lorelai dumped him for not marrying her….. LUNACY

Gilmore Girls fic recs a-plenty
OK, so in answer to an ask from edwardsparklehands and an anon, here’s some rambling recs for GG/literati fic! Tagged users both here (if I can find you) and in AO3, hope that’s OK, kids.
This is absolutely not an exhaustive list – I can be picky af and these are just fics or series that have really stuck with me. And they're not in any order. There’s also tons on my bookmarks list on AO3, but figured I should just try and keep this short. Which it is not.
Anyway, there’s tons of excellent stuff out there, all depending on what you’re looking for. I’ll try and give you finished works too, but there are LOADS of wips that I follow and haven’t mentioned that are worth checking out. Also want to preface this with a caveat – I have no idea what your preference is re warnings or ratings, so always go by what the author has rated/tagged.
The Harvest Moon series by @mrsmess/MrsMess is divine. The eponymous fic is seriously one of my all time favourite literati fics. Rory is dealing with the grief of losing Richard and goes to Luke’s fishing cabin for some time to herself and Jess is there fixing it up. It is just so breathtakingly beautiful, the way grief is explored and how Rory comes to terms with what’s always been there with Jess. Aw man, MrsMess has loads of excellent fic, actually. Bluegirls Come in Every Size, Startstruck (Groundhog Day inspired genius), A Form of Attraction (bodyswap, bitches) far too many to list, so go choose!
Wild Geese by @rudeflower/therudestflower. Oh man, this one. Jess-centric with only the barest hint of Rory – like, minimal, so fyi in case you’re looking for hardcore literati. Truncheon folds and Jess has to move back to Stars Hollow to get his shit together. Delves into his and Liz’s relationship and boy does it go hard. There’s a couple more works in the series that are perfect follow-ups too.
You can’t go wrong with anything by @rorygilmoregf/peterstank. I got sucked in by the weight we carry and it absolutely broke me, but in such a good way. Follows the show from Jess’s POV mostly, but gives him back story and fills his character out so well. Eventually has Rory POV and there’s plenty of literati goodness. Distilla truant is an AU of Jess in Chilton and it is so goooooood. Also, there’s a series called wrapped up in books and it’s an au/fix-it from the Real Paul Anka episode and it is just so wonderful. As is the new lux et veritas where Rory meets Jess in Yale. Just, yeah, go read.
Desdemona's Handkerchief by @stellaluna33/Stellaluna33 is like a lost scene from Teach me Tonight. Just seeing these two knuckleheads being adorbs and lovely and dancing around each other is so sweet – something I would’ve loved to have seen more of on the show. Stellaluna also wrote the gorgeous wip The Long and Winding Road, which I love – it’s on fanfiction.net and ye gads I don’t like the that site’s interface so I flap about like an old lady and get very confused so apologies to Stellaluna for not commenting on it but I LOVE IT and wait with baited breath for more!!
Ah man, pretty much anything by @missgoalie75/missgoalie75, another fandom heavy-hitter imho. To Move With Purpose, the Sense8 AU (LOVE THIS), Get Out of This Place While We Still Have Time, this is all addition by subtraction – all excellent literati. I’m gonna let a cat amongst the pigeons and say Weather Me is one of my favourite GG fics, but it’s Jess/Paris set post-revival – a pairing I thought I’d never read because I’m a literati diehard, but their writing is just so good that I had to read and I was not disappointed.
@gingerteaonthetardis/gingerteaandsympathy has two recent GG fics that are just * chef’s kiss * always crashing in the same car reimagines events in Teach Me Tonight if Rory was driving; it’s all one night and yet there is so much character development it’s astonishing. A thing in itself is an alternate ending to s4e12, A Family Matters, where Jess goes back to Stars Hollow to pick his car up. What if Rory and Jess actually talked things out? I would very much say this.
Truth, Fiction, and Rose-Colored Glasses by @hawthornewhisperer/HawthorneWhisperer figure things out post-revival. This is so soft and lovely and just, yeah. Love it.
It’s a Mixed Up, Muddled Up, Shook Up World (Except for Lola) by @this-is-not-my-dream-blog/cyrene. Post-revival, Jess is just there for Rory and the baby, being all protective and pining and adorable and shit. Yes please.
Eurydice Backwards by @notthereneveraround/notthereneveraround. I adore this conceit; exquisite storytelling.
To You, From Me by 70sBabe – notes Rory and Jess have left for each other. Tracks their relationship through the show and them diverges – love it. 70sBabe has LOADS of excellent fic – I loved this must be the place (flatshare au) and call it what you want (canon divergence, set around 2013, they go on a roadtrip – ugh, the feels).
The Subsect by @truncheonpress/truncheonpress – literally what it says LOL A masterfully meta piece of writing – the author writes as Jess writing his book which is about his life. So densely packed full of detail and references that, like, an embarrassing amount of it is lost on me, but that doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the writing. It’s incredible. And it’s a wip btw.
ETA: dammit, missed gave me the blues by madwoman14! Rory, Dean, Logan and Jess as colours and how they interact. So gorgeous.
OMG ETA AGAIN: how in the name of Mariano did I forget @jenlindleygf/pambeesly's gorgeous fic that absolutely devastated me, you could call me babe for the weekend! Jess and Rory start up a no-strings attached relationship while in Stars Hollow for the holidays and my god is it good. MY GOD IS IT GOOOOOOOOD. But also part of a larger series and I am (not so) patiently waiting for more coz ❤️❤️❤️
And, come on, I would be remiss if I didn’t stick my fics in here too. Because I crave love and attention and I’m actually really happy about them LOL Not Time’s Fool is my attempt to fill in the gaps of AYITL, with a little pre-revival chapter thrown in there too. The sexy times in chapters 1 and 2 is very much explicit, so be warned. But there’s loads of fluff and angst and love and banter and stuff too so, ya know. Letters to a Lost Love is post-AYITL by a few years; just a little domestic fluff scene where Rory talks to Jess about a Truncheon book she loves, and Jess has a confession. And the immediately post-AYITL Ride’em high, kids is shameless, gratuitous, lascivious ogling Jess in shorts because yeah.
OK, I need to stop now. I’m gonna go read more fic and stare at my wips LOL

CharHawk + modern highschool AU or coffee shop AU whichever cliche you find more tolerable :P
high school au!! oh gosh yes.
1. right so i don't know who else out there and on the air is familiar with 'gilmore girls' but these two are the original rory gilmore and paris geller.
think about it
one's smart, loveable and charming, raised by a single adoring parent, beloved by everyone in the small new england town they call home, and other's a prickly, stuck up know it all from a never-seen family, politely considered uptight and rudely considered a bitch. and oh my god they were classmates.
2. charles is the one with the top grades, all the extra-curriculars that matter, the family name, the best clothes, the letterman jacket, the polo pony, the car, the stock portfolio, the dream of the harvard acceptance letter, and... no friends. and now there's this wildly likeable and charismatic happy go lucky scamp with a bright smile and a gpa to match, and charles may have no friends but is never short on enemies, and this no name nobody from nowhere just made the list. this barely bothers hawkeye because he has the friends and the parties and the grades and not in possession of a singular fuck to give about that tall drink of water with a silver spoon up his ass over there brooding by the window backlit by the sun just so and
okay maybe a fuck or two has been given
3. so of course there is the dreaded group project. by some contrived set of circumstances the scene is so tensely set at charles' house and it's very clearly from the instant hawkeye walks in the double oak doors into what can be best described as an art museum masquerading as a family house that so much is explained about his classmate. it's very apparent that the only human contact charles seems to have at home is his younger sister and the housekeeper. in that second he promises that next time will be at *his* house because he's not even sure his classmate has ever seen a slice of takeaway pizza much less been around a parental figure who'd happily order one, and that's the least he can offer. of course he won't stoop to pity, because while they are declared enemies he does know enough about him that pity will go wasted and unwanted. but now he understands. and it might actually be possible to LIKE him. he's funny. he's smart. he actually does care about stuff when he wants to. and oh god when he's in the group chat with peg and bj later he is NOT going to mention that he finds him CUTE because he'll never hear the end of it.
4. they bicker. they argue. they bring out the best in each other. they're competitive and there are pranks and there are also the moments when the rivalry isn't so rivalry-ish. at some point they just... get each other. neither knows how or why, but while they still butt heads over nearly everything and have entirely different motives, they both wish for the same things. i could really like you. more than i should. i really could love you. maybe it takes a 'i never told you anything before' moment. a moment of mutual understanding, the 'oh. you are like me more than i realised'. that.
and i bet that's at a party they've gatecrashed and someone donna spiked the punch.
maybe.
5. it's a given they'd both be pretty much neck and neck for the valedictorian prize at graduation but it doesn't really seem so important because something else and something far better was gained. and i'm not uhhh saying summer roadtrip with new friends and several fulfilling life experiences, but oh to hell with it, i definitely am.

I know many people who have dropped out of university due to stress, or anxiety, or depression. Although, I think Rory overreacted to Mitch’s comments, I sympathize with her and I think it’s a good plot point. It’s realistic and in line with Rory’s character. Rory didn’t have to deal with much adversity growing up. Her entire life she was told that she’s smart and that she could do anything. Thus, she doesn’t feel like she has to go above and beyond to prove herself. For example, she doesn’t partake in any extracurriculars until Paris points out that Rory needs them to stand out in her college applications. Additionally, Rory can’t handle conflict. She runs away from Dean when he tells her he loves her, she moves in with her grandparents when Lorelei asks what’s going on, she runs away to Europe when Lorelei rightfully tells her that sleeping with a married man is wrong. It makes total and complete sense for Rory to Drop out of Yale and spiral after Mitchum points out, rather cruelly, that she needs to take more initiative. I take more issue with Rory stealing a yatch than dropping out of Yale.
I also hate the storyline where Rory sleeps with Dean but I think it made sense for her character as well.
Hmm I both agree and disagree with you. I agree that yes, Rory overreacted to Mitchum's criticism (I mean who steals a Yacht because they received a piece of criticism??) but at the same time dropping out was very in character for her, like you said. I remember seeing her sitting in that classroom and staring out of the window while her classmates are taking a test. That girl was on a verge of burnout and needed a break desperately and I wish Lorelai was more understanding. I also agree that it's typical for Rory to avoid her problems and feelings and pretend they don't exist. I think this is a pattern of behavior she got from Lorelai.
However where I disagree is "she runs away from Dean when he tells her he loves her". I think you're remembering it wrong- it was actually Dean who walked away from her after telling her he loves her just because she didn't say it back. "she runs away to Europe when Lorelai rightfully tells her that sleeping with a married man is wrong" again you don't remember it right. It was actually Lorelai who decided to send Rory to Europe with Emily. Rory didn't even want to go at first.
But explain this to me- why do people take so much issue with Rory spending the summer in Europe? Would you have prefered it if she had stayed in Stars Hollow and continued her affair with Dean throughout the whole summer? Istg Rory just can't win, people find a way to hate on her no matter what she does

heyy first off im obsessed w your account and the underdog quartet but also i feel like, with your new jess/paris playlist post, we need to acknowledge paris and jess’s first interaction when paris went into luke’s diner in “Richard goes to stars hollow” they had a very subtle interaction but he was clearly memorable enough to her to remember him and his name. I wonder if whenever paris when to stars hollow in the future she would look for jess what do you think
Thank you so much for this ask and the kind words!!! I’m obviously obsessed with UQ too, so finding more people who love that dynamic is just amazing!
Also yes we only had about two direct interactions between Paris and Jess but holy shit was the platonic chemistry there!! Paris bothering to remember him is something I would love to take as a sign that she was a Jess gal (especially since if you combine that with Keiko Agena saying she and Lane are team Jess, that means all my faves support my ship!)
Now for Jess and Paris specifically, I could honestly give you three different types of answers for this. First is that ASP and company didn’t feel like exploring that dynamic, so Paris probably doesn’t think about Jess or seek him out in the future, especially not after Rory’s break up. But that take is boring so let’s go for wild headcanons!
The second approach is on the more realistic side. I bet that Paris would avoid bringing up Jess every time he popped into her mind in front of Rory, but she would be too desperate to finally have that decent conversationalist to not bug Rory about him. She probably wouldn’t head over to Stars Hollow of her own accord considering how disappointed she was with the research results for that article, but she would ask about when Jess could come over to Hartford so she could rip his literary takes to shreds at a nearby cafe or at the elder Gilmores. Once Jess and Rory were a couple, Paris would double down on her requests but probably only have them met once or twice (Jess has work, Rory still has a tendency to compartmentalize parts of her life etc.). Post-breakup Paris would take Rory’s side, but secretly be sad to see a potential friend go. She probably felt like this guys really could be something, not just for Rory who seemed to finally get decent taste in boys, but for Paris who was finally starting to get more true friends. She carries a secret team Jess torch for the rest of the series but hides it in general criticism of any and all guys Rory is involved with.
On to approach three, aka balls to the walls whatever I want!! Hold on to your hat because this will be a long and windy ride:
After the diner-meet, Paris is intrigued by the guy who played along with her interrogation and eye-flirted with Rory. She doesn’t think she’ll see him again, but she would be lying if she said she didn’t want to.
After the dinner at Rory’s, Paris is honestly elated to finally have a great literary conversation with a guy her age. The only one to have come close is Rory, and that doesn’t say much for the «opposite sex» in Paris’ eyes. But she’s also furiously disagreeing with Jess’ «Austen loves Bukowski»-take, so she writes a whole several page argumentative essay and forces Rory to deliver it to Jess the next school day.
Jess responds not with a letter, but by having Rory hand Paris an annotated («blasphemy!») copy of a Bukowski work. There are no arguments from Jess notes, just underlines of quotes he thinks Austen would approve of, and excerpts from different Austen works put in the margins for comparison. Paris despises him for how much she is seeing his point.
At some point Rory get’s sick of being a carrier pigeon and drags Paris with her to ST after school so the two can fight in person. All three stay until Lorelai pops over for dinner, and Paris realizes she needs to haul herself over to the bus. She’s hungry and worried about the time she should have spent on homework, but ultimately really happy about the day.
She’s bummed to see Jess go after the car accident, but doesn’t have much time to think about it between school and… well, school. She does end up being one of the few Rory can talk to about Jess without getting the whole «bad bad boy»-speech she gets over in ST and at her grandparents’.
Rory doesn’t tell Paris Jess is back until the very end of their Washington trip when Paris finds the unfinished letter and Paris is boiling. She does cool quickly, but only to constantly bug Rory about when the three of them are going to meet up again for coffee and verbal war. Rory gets so stressed about it that at some point she gives Paris the number to Luke’s and tells her to go on her own for all Rory cares.
Paris does. Jess is surprised, but they get in the groove quick. What doesn’t go as smoothly is Paris asking what the hell is going on between him and Rory. His non-answers pretty much spell everything out, and in a rare moment of comradery, Paris decides to turn the conversation in to hating on Dean. Jess appreciates it. It doesn’t happen again, but Paris firmly puts herself in the team Jess camp from then on.
Paris is releived once Jess and Rory finally are together and it is great! More cafe talks! Study sessions! Movie nights! They even sneak both Paris and Lane out into concerts! Paris feels like for the first time in a very long time, she has real friends her own age. The kind who actually like you for you and want to spend time with you for you, not just to get better grades or a better reputation.
Paris sucks at being strong for Rory when Jess leaves. Like, she takes it really personal. This was supposed to be the one good guy, and he decided to be just like everyone else. But with time she learns to coach Rory into speaking her mind about the whole thing, and to support her in her own Paris-y way.
What she doesn’t tell Rory is that at some point after summer break (either because she gets hold of Jess for some scolding or because Lane does and spills to Paris or even if Jess gets in touch himself) Jess starts sending Paris beat up books he collects on the road around the country. None of them feature letters (at first), but annotations at the beginning declaring his safety and momentary location, as well as his general style annotations of the book inside the text. Paris starts responding with letters, and with time they start talking on phones and through email.
Paris helps Jess with his GED. They make it an equal study-buddy thing because Paris needs help taking certain writers seriously in her essays. Most of their sessions are over the phone, and a lot of it is just them daring each other to actually try. Paris gets actual stars on her improved essays, and Jess passes with flying colours.
Paris doesn’t know about Truncheon until Jess stands in front of her place ages later, dressed like a Kids Bop version of himself and holding a messengerbag with his debut novel. Paris tears through it in two hours (forcing Jess to sit on the couch next to her the whole time) and then spends another half hour furiously trying to tear it to shreds but actually praising it. She gives him their first hug ever, and hopes this afternoon is a sign they’ll slowly get back to being close friends in person.
Paris sucks at hiding how team Jess she is. So. Much. She does have genuine critiques of Logan and other guys, but her gut-defenses of Jess at random times in the day and weird reminiscing back to the «good old days» of diner talk after school gives her away immediately. Rory is uncomfortable, but Paris doesn’t even change her mind after Rory still picks Logan.
What she does do is invite Jess over for grown up evenings with Doyle. Whenever Rory is scheduled to be out and Jess needs to visit Luke anyway, Paris extends her invitation. They test wines based on price and taste, watch cult classics, eat takeout (in honour of Paris’ very first Mac and Cheese night) and talk for hours. One day wires cross and Jess gets in while Rory is there/Rory gets back while Jess is there and things get awkward.
Paris invites Jess to the graduation. Yes she has a limited amount of tickets and yes it’s weird to invite your friend who has barely been around ever but damn it she wants him there. He came to her when he was celebrating his accomplishments, she wants him to be there for hers.
They actually grow even closer as adults; emailing, texting and calling regularly. About 70% of it is general banter and picking on everything and everyone around them, but it’s a far more loving kind now — not that anyone who isn’t them would know, from the outside it looks like they want to kill each other. Regardless of outcome, Paris remains forever team Jess, and the two end up having each other’s backs for life.
So this went long and away from the point (and I only went through Paris’ pov!) but it was fun to write! I hope you like rant answers!
