Love & War
"Everything is fair in love and war"
CH-1
Tumblr media
As Seonghwa emerged from the assembly hall, the administrative minister of the king, Jung Wooyoung, greeted him with a respectful nod. "Congratulations, Hyung," Wooyoung offered warmly.
"Thank you, Wooyoung," Seonghwa replied with a nod of acknowledgment.
"The king has requested me to escort you to your palace," Wooyoung continued, his tone respectful yet tinged with an air of formality. Seonghwa simply nodded in response, his mind already occupied with thoughts of the challenges and responsibilities that lay ahead.
As they exited the palace, two ornate palanquins awaited them, resplendent in hues of gold and red. Seonghwa settled into one, his thoughts momentarily diverted by the memory of the finance minister's envious glare. He knew well the source of the man's resentment—his own meteoric rise to prominence at a young age, culminating in his appointment as the general of Korea's most formidable army.
Lost in contemplation, Seonghwa hardly noticed the journey as the palanquins traversed the bustling streets, eventually arriving at the Gladiolus Palace. Stepping out onto the marble courtyard, Seonghwa was instantly engulfed by an aura of opulence and grandeur that seemed to permeate every corner of the magnificent estate.
Towering pillars, adorned with intricate carvings, reached towards the heavens, casting graceful shadows across the courtyard. The gentle melody of cascading fountains filled the air, their crystalline waters shimmering in the sunlight, adding to the palace's ethereal beauty.
In that moment, Seonghwa couldn't help but feel a surge of pride and determination, knowing that this palace, now his own, would serve as a symbol of his achievements and the king's trust. Yet, beneath the surface of his elation, he remained keenly aware of the challenges and adversaries that awaited him in the corridors of power. Gazing around in awe, Seonghwa found himself captivated by the unparalleled beauty that enveloped him. The grandeur of the palace was nothing short of breathtaking. Whispers lingered in the air, hinting at the palace's storied past—a legacy intertwined with the illustrious history of Goguryeo. Legends spoke of its origins, tracing its lineage back to the queen of the realm's inaugural monarch. However, following her exile, the palace had been sanctified, designated solely for those who had earned the king's utmost trust and reverence.
As he walked through the corridors, the weight of his title and responsibilities settled upon his shoulders. The Gladiolus Palace would now be his home, a symbol of his elevated status and the king's favor. But amidst the splendor, Seonghwa couldn't shake the lingering sense of unease—the knowledge that envy and resentment lurked in the shadows, waiting to test his resolve and ambition.

"You are nothing but worthless, your very existence is futile!" Y/N endured the scathing verbal assault from her aunt, the queen of Baekje, her words laced with disdain.
Before Y/N could even muster a response, she felt the sting of a hunter's strike from the crown prince of the kingdom, Yoon Taehyun. Each blow intensified, accompanied by harsh admonishments, leaving Y/N pleading for mercy, her cries falling on deaf ears.
As Y/N endured the cruel punishment, her younger brother, Jisung, stood resolute outside the store room, determined to rescue his sister from her tormentors. With a heavy heart, he retreated to his quarters, penning a letter to his friend, Kang Yeosang, a military strategist in the Goguryeo empire, outlining their plan for Y/N's escape.
"Dear Hyung,
I trust this letter finds you well. The time has come to set our plan in motion. I implore you to find a suitable suitor for my sister, one who will treat her with the kindness and respect she deserves. I will endeavor to free her from her captivity by the 29th of this month.
Regards,
Prince Jisung of Baekje"
Jisung entrusted the letter to his messenger with a sense of urgency, urging him to expedite its delivery to Yeosang without delay. The messenger embarked on his journey, traversing the vast expanse between the kingdoms until he reached the majestic capital city of Onyeosanseong within three days' time. Upon his arrival, he diligently inquired and navigated through the bustling corridors of the palace until he finally located Yeosang in his office chambers.
With a solemn bow, Yeosang received the letter and swiftly perused its contents, his expression grave as he absorbed the weight of its message. After confirming its authenticity, Yeosang dispatched the messenger back to Jisung with a firm nod of assurance.
With the groundwork laid, Yeosang wasted no time in seeking an audience with the king, determined to set their plan into motion. Bowed respectfully before the monarch, Yeosang broached the sensitive subject at hand, his words measured yet impassioned.
"My lord, there is a matter of utmost importance that requires your attention," Yeosang began, his voice resonating with a sense of urgency.
The king, intrigued, granted his permission with a nod of approval, signaling for Yeosang to continue.
"This may come as a surprise, but I share a longstanding friendship with Prince Jisung of Baekje. We were childhood companions during his time in our kingdom, and he recently confided in me regarding a troubling discovery," Yeosang explained, his tone tinged with solemnity as he relayed the distressing revelation.
He recounted the grim tale of Princess Y/N's harrowing ordeal, detailing her years of unspeakable suffering at the hands of the Baekje monarchy. As he spoke, the gravity of the situation hung heavy in the air, compelling the king to listen intently, his expression a mixture of shock and concern.
Moved by the plight of his niece, the king's resolve solidified, his determination to rescue her from her torment unwavering. Thus, with the foundation laid and the king's support secured, their daring plan to liberate Princess Y/N from her captors began to take shape.
"We have devised a plan, My lord," Yeosang announced with conviction, his voice steady and resolute.
"What is it?" the king inquired, his interest piqued by Yeosang's determined demeanor.
"We believe that securing a marriage for her within our kingdom may offer Princess Y/N a chance at salvation," Yeosang explained, his words measured yet infused with empathy.
"But wouldn't arranging a marriage proposal pose a significant risk, given her precarious situation?" the king interjected, his brow furrowing with concern.
"That is precisely why we propose to clandestinely extricate her from Baekje and solemnize the marriage within the confines of Goguryeo," Yeosang countered, his gaze unwavering as he outlined the intricacies of their plan.
The king considered Yeosang's proposal thoughtfully, recognizing the gravity of the situation. "You have my permission," he declared finally, his voice carrying the weight of authority.
"Do you have a candidate in mind?" the king inquired, his gaze fixed intently on Yeosang.
"General Park Seonghwa, my lord," Yeosang revealed without hesitation, his tone reflecting his unwavering confidence in the choice.
The king's expression softened at the mention of Seonghwa's name, a flicker of paternal affection crossing his features. "I hold General Seonghwa in high regard, but to marry him to a woman who has endured such suffering... I am uncertain if it is the right course of action," he confessed, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
Yeosang met the king's gaze with unwavering resolve. "My lord, General Seonghwa's reputation may precede him as a man of formidable demeanor, known for his stern and unwavering nature on the battlefield. However, beneath this seemingly cold exterior lies a heart capable of profound compassion and understanding," Yeosang asserted, his tone resolute yet earnest. "While he may have earned a reputation for his strict discipline and ruthless tactics in warfare, his loyalty and sense of duty are unparalleled. It is this very sense of duty that makes him an ideal candidate to safeguard Princess Y/N's well-being," he continued, emphasizing the depth of character hidden beneath the general's imposing facade.
"Very well, give me tomorrow's time to have an audience with him," the king remarked, his tone carrying a weight of authority and contemplation.

title: i saw him first author: eyela rating: explicit wordcount: 27663 pairing: choi san/jung wooyoung/kang yeosang summary:
The feud between the Kangs and the Jungs has gone on for generations, so long that no one even knows how it started anymore. What everyone does know is that Crown Prince San is set to choose a consort by the end of the season, and both houses are determined that their heir will be selected. The court watches eagerly to see whether the prince will prefer famously charming Jung Wooyoung or legendary beauty Kang Yeosang.
There’s just one problem – Yeosang and Wooyoung are secretly lovers.
It’s already stressful having to act like they despise each other in public, but having to pretend to compete for the prince’s heart may be more than their relationship can handle. Tension and jealousy are building, especially when the prince starts showing interest in both of them, and before they know it, the fight for Prince San is becoming alarmingly real.

Part 4 < > Part 6
****
They combed the entire palace, but Hongjoong knew they'd never find her. Sookymung lived here her entire life, knowing the secret passages and exits. With her supporters aiding her, she is likely on her way out of the city. Still, Hongjoong and San searched in the northern part of the palace grounds; Yunho and Yeosang searched the west while Jongho and Wooyoung took men to the east. He knew you were safe with Seonghwa in the harem, but he couldn’t help thinking of Sookmyung finding her way in there. Whether it is true or not, Sookmyung will believe you had a hand in this and come for you. She'd told him repeatedly how deeply she trusted you, bordering on being in "love" with you. Hongjoong couldn't stop himself from picturing her sneaking into your chambers, and plunging a knife into you like she'd done to his mother. He couldn't protect her, but he can protect you.
This fight was far from over.
By the time they returned to the harem, he found the other conspirators in the main room awaiting him. Jisoo spotted him first.
"Did you find her?"
"No," he shook his head. "She must have fled into the city. The city watch is on alert, but they won't find her." He looked at Wonshik, "We were betrayed. You said we had support on our side," he snapped at him angrily, "You said they'd stand with us against her. I don't know if you've noticed, but at least half of them defended Sookmyung instead of arresting her."
"It was the Dukes of Daegu, Gongju, and Ulleungdo who defected," Wonshik said. "I am not surprised by this. They have much to lose if Sookmyung is not on the throne. I should have foreseen this outcome-"
"-Yes, you should have," he looked about the room for you, "Where is YN?" He needed to see you.
"She's asleep, Your Grace," Chaewon told him.
"Alone?" His eyebrows raised at this serious oversight. "When Sookmyung is out there?"
"She's being closely guarded," said Jisoo.
"By who?"
"Seojoon and Minho-"
"-No," Hongjoong interrupted, "None of Sookmyung’s old guards. Until they have proven their loyalty to their new queen, I do not want any of the old guards overseeing YN."
"Your Grace," she began, "Seojoon and Minho have proven themselves to be loyal servants to The Crown, not specifically Sookmyung."
"I don't care." He looked to the men behind him. If he should trust any of them, it should be the men who stood at his side. "San, Mingi, I want you to watch over YN."
"Are you-" Mingi began to say, but Hongjoong cut him off.
"-I am. San, you used to be an army captain. Mingi, you worked for pirate hunters. I trust you both to keep her safe."
There are so few people he can trust, he realized. Sookmyung knew about this coupe. Someone within their circle whispered their treason, and she gathered people loyal to her. It is the only explanation. She’d known they’d come for her eventually, but you being revealed as her sister distracted her. Even if she does not get her throne back, she will make sure you suffer. Hongjoong saw, watching San and Mingi leave the room, that he cannot simply let anyone be around you. Sookmyung’s allies may have stationed spies within the palace. One of them might even be ordered to kill you. He’d do everything in his power to make sure that never happened.
“What of the lords from Daegu, Gongju and Ulleungdo?” asked Seonghwa. “They’ll likely still be in the palace, if not already in the city.”
“I vote we round whoever remains,” said Advisor Junhan, “And hold them as hostages. We will send word to their families that unless they bend the knee to Queen YN, their children will continue to be imprisoned here.”
“No,” Wonshik disagreed, “If we do such a thing, we are no better than Sookmyung. We must continue searching for her.”
“But how?” asked Seonghwa. “We don’t have the men to spare for such a search. Besides, a whole host of men is a lot harder to hide.”
“I will write to Changbin,” Jisoo suggested. “He has plenty of connections and people to send about the kingdom for us.”
“Can they be trusted to not speak if captured?” asked Advisor Heechul. “Sookmyung’s methods of interrogation are horrendous. She may discover all she needs to know if she apprehends one of them.”
“They won’t talk,” said Hongjoong quietly. He thought of Naeun, who remained loyal until the very end. “Sookmyung tortured Naeun for hours, and she never said a word. Send word to Changbin,” he told Jisoo, “And tell him to plant his spies in the courts of Daegu, Gongju, and Ulleungdo. If Sookmyung is anywhere near those places, they might find out where.”
“Sookmyung will not make this an easy task,” noted Advisor Junhan. “I personally trained her in combat and martial arts. She is an excellent strategist-”
“-No, she is not,” argued Hongjoong. “She’s built her reputation as a great war strategist on lies and fear. It does not take military know-how to storm a castle and put it to the torch. Sookmyung only succeeded in war because she had advisors much more talented and knowledgeable than herself. Her conquest succeeded because she killed anybody who could possibly oppose her in the future, and installed people loyal to her in their place. That won’t happen again.”
“And what makes you so sure of this?” asked Wonshik, not challenging but curious.
“Because we’re on equal footing this time,” he told him. "She won’t have the support she had before. She's going to be outnumbered and surrounded.” If he's lucky, Sookmyung’s paranoia will cause her to lash out and behave rashly.
“And she’ll have you to contend with now,” added Seonghwa with a small grin.
“Forgive me, Your Grace,” interjected Advisor Junhan, “But you were a concubine for several years. I don’t think the people will-”
“-Hongjoong is the King of Wonju,” Seonghwa snapped. “He is the person the resistance wanted to lead them. He is a skilled swordsman, marksman, horse rider, and combat strategist. He knows Sookmyung just as well as anyone else in this room. If anybody could lead our armies to victory, it would be Hongjoong.”
“Us being her sex slaves will only endear us to the people more.”
It was Yunho who’d spoken. He stepped out from the shadowy doorway, pensive and serious. The healer. The physician. Yunho spent the past eight years personally attending to Sookmyung and her “flowers”. He’d also been the most kind-hearted of them all.
“Everything we know about Sookmyung is not a fact in the kingdom,” he continued. “Those who have witnessed her cruelty only saw a percentage of it. When word reaches the masses that everything they’ve ever heard about her is true, as possibly worse than they believed, they won’t be so hasty to follow her. Just because the dukes who betrayed us side with her does not mean their bannermen or lords under their rule will.”
“Are you suggesting we let the truth come out?”
“Why not? By morning, everyone will know YN is her sister and will be crowned the new queen soon. I think it will do well to tarnish Sookmyung’s reputation a bit further.”
“We could also let it be released that Sookmyung forced YN to participate in her wrongdoings,” Yeosang said from his window perch nearby. “It may cause them to sympathize with her.”
“YN will need all the support she can gather,” said Jisoo. “Sookmyung may have military strength, but the support of the people is a powerful thing. If they see YN is someone they can rally around, they will stand with her.”
Yes, they will. Hongjoong knew the people of Wonju will follow him, and if you’re his wife and he’s your king consort, they will follow you too.
“We must coronate YN as soon as possible,” insisted Wonshik. “The sooner we have a crown on her head and official documents in place, the sooner we can gain support.”
“And when do you suggest we do this, Wonshik?” asked Hongjoong with a challenge in his voice. “Tomorrow morning? We cannot stage a coronation in a day. Besides, a public event might put YN in harm’s way. No, it is too soon.”
“YN must be given time to take in all of this,” Chaewon said from behind Jisoo. “If I may, Your Grace, suggest that we take a small grace period in the meantime? The council can set coronation plans and we can focus on other matters.”
“Other matters?” questioned Hongjoong.
“There is also another event that needs attention,” Jisoo answered. “Your marriage.”
“I would rather we focus our efforts on Sookmyung-” he began, but she intervened.
“A marriage between Hanseong and Wonju will be the distraction we need to buy us time.”
“And an opportunity for her to strike,” he retorted. “I do not want YN anywhere that Sookmyung could reach her.”
“And neither do we,” she said. “The wedding will be held in the palace behind closed doors and heavily guarded, if that pleases you.”
He thought for a moment, then said, “Let us put this to rest for now. I’d like to discuss this further with YN present.”
You likely do not even know about the arrangement. He knew you'd gone through enough for one night, and he wouldn't make it worse. The council, Queen Jisoo and Chaewon left the harem at his dismissal, bowing to him before making their exit. It felt odd having people bow to him. There'd been a time in his life where everybody knew when he was entering or leaving a room. But, they hadn't done that for years. It would be another thing he must get used to again.
He turned to look at the men left in the room: Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, Wooyoung, San, and Jongho. He noticed they each held their veils in their hands. His hands clenched into fists whenever he wore the golden veil, which became a symbol of enslavement. He'd removed the red headband she'd given to single him out from the rest; a token of her affection, she’d claimed. Hongjoong knew better. Hongjoong withdrew the veil tucked into a pocket, and walked over to a nearby brazier. Hongjoong examined the long, sheer material dotted in gold and silver pieces. He remembered when Sookmyung gave it to him.
"You're mine now," he said to himself, recalling that moment in her tent. "And everyone will know it."
Hongjoong thought of his dead mother, laying lifeless and bloody on the floor of their family room. Sookmyung told him if his men laid down their arms, she'd spare his mother and siblings. She didn't. She cut them down without hesitation. Hongjoong's heart ached in his chest, and he breathed deeply. Sookmyung took everything from him: his family, his life, and his dignity. He replayed every awful moment in his mind, and swallowed back his tears. Running his thumb over the smooth jewels, taking in their shape and size, he realized he'd never wear this again. Even if somehow they lost, and she reclaimed her throne, he'd rather die than be her slave. He'll never wear this veil or this headband again. Angrily, Hongjoong threw the two articles into the fire. Standing by the fire, he watched the silk start to singe at the edges. The veil's mesh material began curling outward in certain parts. It felt cleansing, standing beside the burning coals and watching his chains melt. He is his own person.
Then another veil joined the fire. Then another, another, and another. Soon, all eight veils burned in the fire. Hongjoong glanced up to see tears welled up in Yeosang and Yunho's eyes, while Jongho and Seonghwa remained as stoic as himself. They're free now. They might not know what their futures hold, but they are their own men again.
"We will not be slaves again," he promised them, gulping the lump in his throat. "I swear it."
He felt a hand grab his gently, long fingers sliding between his own. Hongjoong looked to see tears escaping Seonghwa's lashes, falling down his cheeks to his sharp jawline. He couldn't help wiping them away with his sleeve.
"You'll never wear those masks again," he told him.
"I'd die first," said Jongho stiffly, gazing into the fire with watery eyes. "I'll slit my own throat before being her property again."
"Do not say such insane things," Yeosang frowned, taking his hand in his own.
"The only throat I want to slit is hers," Wooyoung said through gritted teeth, hands curling into fists at his sides. "She's hurt too many people to stay alive. She's too dangerous." He looked up at Hongjoong, "We have to win, we must stop her."
"We will," he assured him, unable to stop his own tears now.
He stared at them as they cried in the flames. Hongjoong vowed to succeed.
They must succeed.
****
Waking up the next morning felt surreal. You thought you might be lying somewhere between reality and sleep before you sensed a presence near your bed. Panic immediately struck you, and you clutched the sheets around you. The image of Sookmyung standing over your bed, eyes blazing with fury and holding a long knife made you tremble. You knew they wouldn't find her. Sookmyung always got her way, regardless of who she killed to get it. A thousand pleas for mercy bundled in your throat, and you screamed when you felt a hand touch your shoulder.
"Your Majesty, your Majesty!" a soft, gentle voice said over your panicked screams. You swatted at the figure, eyes closed to avoid meeting her eyes.
"Get away! Get away!" you cried, your heart pounding in your ears as the person managed to grab hold of your arms.
Then you felt somebody else at your opposite side, and you moved away from them. It took several minutes to register the white hanboks and the worried expressions of Sookmyung's former handmaidens. Aro, Saehee, Boram, and Dasom stood all around the bed, a bit frightened but mostly concerned. You never realized how similar the women looked. Short and skinny, Sookmyung made them wear their hair in long braids with the red colored daeng'gi at the end. In their pure white hanbok, they became almost indistinguishable. Sookmyung did this on purpose. Not only would she stand out against their white backdrop, but also stand taller and therefore appear more intimidating. Heat filled your cheeks, and you tucked a piece of hair behind your head, feeling embarrassed.
"Forgive me," you coughed, sitting up properly and covering your chest. "I...I didn't..."
"It's alright, Your Majesty," soothed Saehee. The eldest of the four, you often put her in charge of managing the other handmaidens in your absence. She sat beside you, taking your clammy hand in hers, "It's only us here. Nobody is going to hurt you."
"We wanted to see you," admitted Aro. Only fourteen-years-old, you'd spent a good amount of time training her to serve Sookmyung, but she still made mistakes as children do. Something Sookmyung did not forgive easily. "We heard what happened yesterday, and wanted to see if you were alright."
"I had breakfast brought for you," Boram told you, taking a seat on the bed. "You hadn't eaten properly since yesterday, and I knew you'd be hungry." Boram, always considerate and motherly in that sense. Due to her close relationship with the chef's son and her culinary knowledge, you let her handle Sookmyung's meals.
You supposed she'd be preparing your meals now.
“Did you know Mingi and San are outside your door?" whispered Dosam, who crawled onto the bed close to you. "I think they've been there all night." Dosam, while sweet, never hesitated to indulge in gossip. You knew Sookmyung often used her as a spy in the servant's quarters, but Dosam usually lied or told a half-truth. "They almost didn't let us in until we said Queen Jisoo ordered us to come here."
"It's like they didn't trust us!" huffed Boram, arms crossed. "What did they think we'd do? Strangle you?"
"I'm sure they meant no offense, Boram," you assured her. "They're only being cautious." You looked at Dosam, "Did they find her?"
They all shook their heads, and dread filled your stomach. Sookmyung was likely already out of the city, plotting your death as you sit there. You hugged your sheets around your torso, and shuddered. She knew all the passageways into the palace, and you're sure her allies across the city would help her. She could come at any moment, drag you into the dungeon, and torture you to death. The phantom sensation of nails being pulled from your fingers or needles pierced into your skin one by one sickened you. She'd delight in throwing you into The Box, since your discomfort of it amused her. The possibility caused you to flinch at Saehee's touch again.
"But you're safe here," she insisted, rubbing your back gently, "Hongjoong will make sure you're safe."
"Hongjoong?"
"Yes, he's been working closely with the advisors and Queen Jisoo," said Dosam. "I saw him with the Queen when she summoned us to her apartments. They looked like they were having a pretty serious conversation if you ask me.”
"Was my mother there?"
The women paused for a moment. "Which one?" asked Boram, cautiously.
You then remembered the most shocking part of the whole evening. All the confusion from the previous night returned, and added itself into the anxiousness rolling in your stomach. Queen Jisoo and King Siwon were your birth parents. They'd given you to their servants to keep a succession dispute. They'd done it in vain, since it is happening regardless of their efforts. You tried thinking of happy moments you had with the king and queen, but you only saw your mother and father when you did. Chaewon sang you lullabies whenever you had nightmares. Hyungshik always brought you pretty flowers or stones he'd found while tending to the gardens. They made sure you always ate well, and kept up with your studies. You knew you could turn to them in uncertain times. You didn't feel that way with Queen Jisoo, even if she was always kind and considerate of you.
"My mother," you repeated a bit more firmly. "Park Chaewon."
"She's with the queen," said Saehee.
"She was sitting with her and Hongjoong," Dosam told you.
"Did you hear what they were talking about?" asked Aro.
"No," she shook her head. "They stopped talking when I entered the room." You then saw the wayward glance she gave, "But I did hear them at the door."
"What did you hear?" you asked her, somewhat nervous to hear the answer.
Dosam did not answer right away. You recognized her hesitancy, since it was the same cower she'd give Sookmyung. She closed her eyes as if forced to say it, "They were talking about you marrying Hongjoong!"
Everyone on the bed gasped. You sat frozen in place, your brain trying to comprehend what she'd said. For a moment, you worried you may have heard her wrong. "What?"
"I heard Queen Jisoo say that a marriage between Wonju and Hanseong will be good for the future," she said hurriedly, "And that together you and Hongjoong can rebuild the kingdom."
"What? No...No, there's no way she's honestly considering..."
Hongjoong belonged to Sookmyung. He is her favorite flower, her most prized possession. If you married him, whatever plans she had will become especially heinous. Hongjoong's face came to the forefront of your mind. You thought about your conversation with him during the party. He'd told you that you worried so much about others, and rarely yourself. He'd said it in an amused tone, almost as if he found it cute. Hongjoong possibly thinking of you in any capacity outside of formality made your insides churn. You supposed a marriage between you made sense on paper, since he is a prince of Wonju and you're now a queen. But, thinking of marrying Hongjoong made your cheeks burn.
"He is handsome," Saehee noted, "And tender-hearted. I think he will make a fine husband."
"And he's a prince!" added Aro. "Now that Sookmyung isn't around, he can be a prince again."
"He's a king," Saehee corrected her. "His family is dead, right? That means he's King of Wonju now."
"Do you think you'll be his queen consort?" she asked you, bright eyed.
"Maybe," you shrugged. "I'm meant to be the Queen of Hanseong. I don't think we can both marry if we have separate thrones. Who will look over Wonju, if Hongjoong is far away?"
“They can find somebody," Saehee said. "You never know. Perhaps he has a cousin or distant relative somewhere who can handle Wonju for him?"
"Perhaps."
Marrying Hongjoong was meant to be a fantasy of yours. Thinking about being his wife, his closest friend, and confidant was supposed to remain in your head. You'd do your best to avoid looking at or talking to him because you know if you did, you'd fall deeper in love with him. It's similar to your feelings for Seonghwa, who showed you gentleness and reassurance last night. You knew showing too much attention towards them would upset Sookmyung. With her out of way, and word of a possible marriage in the air, the possibilities felt endless.
“Let us get you dressed,” concluded Saehee. “The Queen wishes to speak with you.”
“I can dress myself, Saehee,” you told her, wrapping yourself in the sheets and fixing your hair from your face. “It’s not necessary.”
“You’re going to be The Queen,” she said. “A queen always has handmaidens.”
“Unless…” Aro fiddled with the ribbon in her hair, “You wish to dismiss us?”
You saw the uncertainty show on their faces. None of them looked directly at you, and you frowned.
“Of course, I wouldn’t dismiss any of you,” you implored. “Why would I do such a thing? We have gone through so much together, and I care about each of you deeply.”
“I don’t know,” she shrugged. “You might not wish to have a stupid cry baby as you handmaiden,” she sniffled, and you saw her eyes water. “I’m always so clumsy and-”
“-And when have I shown annoyance at that?” you asked her gently. “When?”
“Never,” she sniffed. “You’re always so kind and patient with me.”
“I’m not a virgin!” Boram blurted out. When you all whipped your heads to her, she winced. “I’m not. I have not been for a long time. I knew the punishment for that, so I never said anything, but I am now. Vernon and I are in love,” she said to you in particular, “And he wants to marry me. I hope that it won’t upset or displease you.”
“Not at all,” you told her, taking her hand in your own. “You are not my property. All of you are free to love and marry freely.” You stood up from the bed, standing straight as you said, “My first order to all of you is to live as you wish. You are all going to remain my handmaidens, but you can do what you please outside of your duties. Wear whatever hanbok you like. Wear your hair however you wish. You belong to yourselves, not me.”
Their smiles lifted your spirits. You picked at the breakfast Boram placed in front of you while she and Dosam prepared a bath nearby. As good as it tasted, you found it hard to enjoy the food. Sookmyung slowly crept her way back into your mind, and you couldn’t stop yourself from thinking of her. Where did she go when she ran from the city guards? Who housed her right now? Did they know she liked to eat before she bathed? That she liked her soup piping hot, and her rice cooked to the perfect softness? You pitied whoever they put in charge of attending her. The poor girl won’t know the danger until it comes. You thought of the serving girl from a few nights ago who’d accidentally spilled wine. The girl lived, but you remember the long lashes on her bare skin and her painful sobs. Sookmyung found pleasure in her pain, but you did not.
“Your Majesty,” Saehee appeared from the hall with a long box and you immediately shook your head.
“-No, I won’t wear that,” you stopped her. “I won’t wear anything that’s hers.” It sounded almost like bringing yourself bad luck.
“This isn’t hers,” the woman insisted. “Queen Jisoo said she had some of her old hanboks stored away, and she thought you may like this one.”
“Oh…”
You watched her remove the top lid as you finished your breakfast. Red with gold cranes circled on the shoulders, several royal seals were painted into the long draped sleeves. The royal dragon emblem was part of the sash over the top coat; pond scenes with cranes and flowers painted along the stripes down the skirt. You recognized it at once. Queen Jisoo wore it at the last royal event she attended before King Siwon’s passing. She’d look regal and elegant. You spotted the same floral pins she’d worn in her hair that day, tucked into the braided bun at the nape of her neck.
“She wants me to wear this?” you asked, reaching forward to touch the soft satin fabric.
“Yes,” she nodded. “It’s gorgeous, isn’t it?”
She’d chosen this one for a reason. If there’s anyone you should be emulating, it should be The Peoples’ Queen, Queen Han Jisoo. You left the bed for the bath, sinking into the warm water and beginning to scrub yourself. Dosam moved to take the sponge from you, but you held it from her.
“I can bathe myself, Dosam,” you told her with a soft giggle.
“As you wish, Your Majesty.”
The words sounded weird when directed at you. You enjoyed the jasmine scented water as you contemplated the day. People everywhere must know the truth by now. What would things be like when you left the safety of this room? You finished your bath quickly, though you knew you could’ve taken as long as you wanted, and began drying and dressing yourself. Before you could pick up the undergarment layers, Saehee snatched it first.
“Let us at least dress you,” she said. “You’re a queen now. It’s considered an honor to attend to royalty.”
Was it? You certainly never felt honored when you dressed Sookmyung. Still, you allowed the four women to dress you. With each piece they slid onto you, you felt yourself slowly melting away. You’d never worn such finery before, and wearing the eoyeo meori felt different. Slowly, YN the Handmaiden became YN the Queen, and you didn’t know if you liked the queen yet. Sitting in front of the long mirror, looking yourself over as Dosam finished applying lip paint, you realize this is something you’ll be doing every morning. It didn’t matter if you wanted this or not. You must go through with this now, or otherwise all the effort put into it will be in vain.
“You look magnificent,” smiled Aro, who stood aside to look at you. “Hongjoong won’t be able to take his eyes off you.”
“I don’t look like myself,” you touched the smooth skirt between your fingers. “I don’t feel like myself.”
“It’ll take some adjustment, I expect,” assured Saehee. “But, a nice hanbok and a wig doesn’t mean you’re not still YN. You’re YN with a title, that’s all.”
You didn’t know how to explain that it’s more than that. Your sole responsibilities used to only be the handmaidens and Sookmyung. As a queen, everyone in the kingdom is your responsibility. How can you possibly accommodate and please so many people? Particularly people once ruled over by fear and anguish. You liked to think you had your mother, the advisors and Jisoo helping you. They wouldn’t allow you to fail.
“Think of all the good things you can do now that you’re queen,” Aro said, smiling. “You can help so many people.”
You knew she meant well, but that only filled you with more dread.
“And you’ll have Hongjoong beside you,” Dosam smirked, “He’s quite fond of you. I don’t think he’d let you fail.”
‘Fond of you’. Was he? Yes, Hongjoong made kind passive gestures towards you before, but nothing indicating ‘fondness’. As they led you out of your dressing room, you couldn’t imagine Hongjoong being ‘fond’ of you. Every time you thought of his soft giggle or the crinkle of his eyes, Sookmyung's face came up right behind it. You thought of his lips lightly brushing against yours, one hand holding your hand and the other around your waist. He’d taste like mint and smell of cinnamon, a combination that would unravel you in seconds, melting any guard you may have up around him. Hongjoong and you may have not spoken often, yet you could not help imagining that fondness being present.
“Good morning, Your Majesty.”
Seonghwa stood in the main room of the harem with San and Mingi. Yeosang, Yunho, Wooyoung and Jongho all sat around, enjoying a light breakfast spread put out for them. They all stood from their seats when you entered, and you immediately remembered you’d fallen asleep in the harem. Embarrassment filled your cheeks, and you did your best not to look away.
“I’d ask if you slept well,” he said, “But I’m afraid not many of us did.”
“I slept well,” you replied. You felt his eyes taking in every inch of your face, and this did not stop the daydreams from expanding further. Seonghwa and Hongjoong. Sookmyung could have two lovers. Why couldn’t you? “Thank you. I assume it was my mother who asked you to keep watch over me?”
“In fact, it was Hongjoong who insisted we keep you here,” he answered, “I only seconded it.” He approached you, “They’re waiting for you in Queen Jisoo’s residence. San and Mingi are sleeping off their guard duty, but Wooyoung, Yunho and myself will walk you there.”
“What about the other palace guards?”
“Hongjoong said he wasn’t comfortable with any of Sookmyung’s old guards watching over you,” he said. “We’ll be watching over you until you’ve chosen a suitable guard for yourself.”
“Does that displease you, Your Majesty?”
Wooyoung asked this with worry in his voice. You stared at him for a moment. His slim build made it easy for him to slip between trees and scurry through dense bushes like a shadow. You remembered Sookmyung complaining about how he can be so loud, but still able to pass through unnoticed. It’d taken them a week to find him when he’d escaped camp during the war. He’d also been the hardest for Sookmyung to break.
“Not at all, Wooyoung,” you answered him honestly. “I don’t believe I’d feel comfortable around anyone who pledged allegiance to Sookmyung, to be truthful.”
You then noticed the most obvious thing about the men: they did not wear their veils. They’d rid themselves of their shackles, and you smiled softly at them. “Shall we go now?” you asked, taking a timid step forward, “I don’t wish to keep my mother or The Queen waiting any longer.”
“Of course, when you wish, Your Majesty.”
Right. You’re meant to lead. Taking another step, you kept putting one foot in front of the other as the group followed you outside. Yunho and Wooyoung walked ahead, wearing swords at their sides and no longer hiding their faces behind veils. Your handmaidens flanked you, keeping their heads down, while Seonghwa came into step beside you.
“May I accompany you there, Your Majesty?” he asked.
“Yes,” you nodded. “It’s still so odd.”
“What is?”
“To be called ‘Your Majesty’,” you said. “It feels…wrong. It doesn’t suit me.”
“You’re the queen. It’s your title.”
“I still don’t know if I like it.”
“Then, what do you wish to be called?” he asked, “Give me a title and I’ll gladly call you by it.”
You gave it a thought, “Hm, I don’t know.”
“Alright, ‘I-Don’t-Know’,” he smirked, giving you an amused smile.
You laughed at his joke, some of the tension inside you deflating as you reached the harem entrance. The world felt different to you, but you weren’t sure how. You thought you might have woken up in a dream, and you’ll wake up any moment.
“I imagine it will take a while to adjust,” he said when you reached the palanquin. “A lot has changed overnight, and it must be a lot to take in for you.”
“It is,” you admitted with a sigh. You anxiously picked at the inside of your sleeve, standing in front of the palanquin. It wasn’t Sookmyung’s palanquin. Hers had been larger. “Hongjoong is with my mother?”
“He is,” he nodded. “He went ahead with her to talk to the advisors and discuss our next move. I’m sure they’ll inform you once you arrive.”
He let you climb into the palanquin first, then followed you in. Being in a close, intimate space with Seonghwa put you on edge. Light whiffs of sandalwood came from his clothes, which you came to enjoy very quickly. Once the footmen began moving towards the queen’s residency, you spoke.
“Has he slept at all?”
“A bit,” he said. “As I said, not all of us slept very well. The guards are still combing the city for Sookmyung, and word about last night is beginning to spread outside the capital. I imagine everyone will know about you, Sookmyung, and the throne by week’s end.” When saw the anxiousness in your face, he added, “I’m sorry this has happened so quickly, YN, and that you’re not being given sufficient time to adjust. It isn’t fair to anyone, but most of all you.”
“Thank you, Seonghwa,” you gave a soft smile, trying not to notice his round eyes gazing so intently at you. “Thank you for being here.”
“You’re my queen now,” he grinned, “I will be wherever you wish me to be.”
You smiled for a moment, before it instantly faded. “What’s wrong?” he asked, concerned. “Did I say something to offend you?”
“No, no, forgive me. It’s not you,” you insisted. “It’s…” you sighed, “Even with her gone, I still see you as hers. She kept you at such a far distance that it’s almost as if she still owns you.”
“She doesn’t,” he said firmly. “And she doesn’t own you either. We are our own people now. We can be whoever we choose to be,” he then added, “And be with whoever we wish.”
You bit your inner cheek to keep from smiling.

A/N: I'm super sorry I kept everyone waiting so long in between chapters! My mental health, work, and life things really just kept me from really focusing on a single project at a time. I hope this chapter makes up for it! <3

A fever that will have no cure. Fourth teaser and Omegas MATZ and their little Omega best friend
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Super Shy Omegas MATZ x Omega reader
You have always been a very gentle and shy bunny, and an Omega as well. Until Yeosang adopted you, life wasn't easy for you. Your amazing unnie was the best owner ever. You were his little princess, and he treated you like royalty.
Imagine your surprise when he introduced you to two other bunny hybrids belonging to his best friend, Wooyoung. Apart from the fact that both Seonghwa and Hongjoong were absolutely charming and gentle with you, both of them were Omegas, just like you were. From the very first second of your communication, you had the feeling that the three of you would be best friends forever. And that, of course, was the case. Until something started to change between the three of you,.
You completely didn't notice the fact that their touches became longer and more frank, how sweetly they said your name and loved leaving their scent on you, or how jealous they were of the magnificent Alpha San, the most beautiful cat hybrid you'd ever seen, when you gave him your full attention.
But one night, everything is going to change. When a thunderstorm starts outside the window and the power goes out in the house, the three of you are left with nothing to do but share your bed and maybe your sudden heat.

Call It What You Want - Kang Yeosang
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Yeosang was a mysterious guy on your campus. He was the guy who was at every party thrown, but also would spend hours studying in the library. He got good grades but could also drink more than fraternity brother. He was a puzzle that you were trying to figure out. Little did you know, you were the missing piece to his own puzzle.
"Are labels really that important when I am 100% certain about my feelings for you?"
Pairing: non-idol!Kang Yeosang x reader
Genre: Angst - unofficial relationship, uncertainty, friends with benefits turned to lovers.
Warnings: PG-13 - contains implied sexual intercourse, alcohol consumption, implied female masturbation
Word Count: 4.3k
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Yeosang was a mysterious man, even to those that personally knew him. He never really let off what his emotions were right away.
He was a man capable of multiple things. He had two personalities - one that was a tough, rigid guy who had his mind set on one thing. It would be impossible to get him to reconsider. He then also had this soft side of his personality that lured people in. Yeosang was always calm and composed. Overall though, he was like royalty. People worshipped the ground he walked on.
You were tucked away in his world. You got to experience both sides of him and then more. A lot more.
Your chest was rising and falling, holding Yeosang's comforter up to your chest. This was a regular routine for you and Yeosang. Every week, at some point or another, you would find yourself in his bed.
Last night, tequila was the motivating factor that led you into his bedroom. It started off innocent, Yeosang just checking in on you. You both were at the same party, but attended with different people. However, once you spotted him and the alcohol settled in your system, you decided it was only appropriate you grinded your hips back into him.
Eagerly, Yeosang ordered an Uber for the two of you. You couldn't remember much once you stepped into his apartment except for the quiet giggles, hands all over each other, and rushes kisses.
And now here you were. It was 8:08am. It was always a rush to be sleeping with Yeosang, but lately, you were craving more. More than just what friends with benefits are meant to be.
Yeosang and you met after being in the same writing seminar freshman year. It was a requirement for first years, to help them get accustomed to the writing styles expected of them. The two of you didn't take the class too seriously, often coming in late or skipping all together. You weren't expecting to be friends with Yeosang, considering he was rather quiet in class.
That's how the friendship began to blossom. You would hang out either at his apartment or yours. It was also how you got close with Yeosang's roommates - Yunho, San, Mingi, and Wooyoung.
You two quickly became friends on an intimate level. It started when you were confiding in Wooyoung how frustrated you were with meeting guys on Tinder. With your busy schedule, you weren't really trying to date in college. Yet, you still had needs. You figured one night stands would end up being your best option, but each guy left you more disappointed than the one before.
Big mistake in confiding in Wooyoung. Word quickly spread to Yeosang, who offered himself to help with your situation.
At first, you thought he was just mocking you. Sure, you could resort to masturbation or buying sex toys, but you loved the feeling of someone's body on yours. You craved the feeling of wandering hands on your skin, causing the goosebumps to rise and your heart to race with excitement. You even wanted to spend minutes rushing to cover up hickies before going to lectures.
You just had no idea how happy Yeosang was to help you out.
It started by hooking up when you were the most stressed - two days before exam day. You would spend the week trying to study as much as possible. Yet, Yeosang always noticed the way you would increasingly hunch over the table. It was as if you were being consumed by the stress and sex was the only remedy.
Soon, once a week became twice a week. You'd hit up Yeosang late at night, often when you were feeling the most lonely. And every time, Yeosang was wide awake and waiting for you with open arms. He would either make sweet love to you, reminding you of how cherished you are, or he would be willing to fuck you into his mattress.
Now, twice a week was almost every other night. You were over at Yeosang's more than you were at your own apartment. There even was a toothbrush waiting for you in his bedroom.
As seniors in college, things were starting to shift for you.
"Surprised you are up, darlin.'"
You jumped slightly at the sound of the deep voice behind you. He snickered before moving to wrap an arm around you, pulling you in closer to him. "Not like you to be up this early," he murmured. You felt yourself shiver, your heart racing, as he placed a kiss on the back of your neck.
The Yoesang campus knew would have never guessed he used pet names the way he just casually dropped them with you. If anything, they were probably convinced he had a stone-cold heart as he rarely showed emotion to others. The only time he seemed happy was if he was with his usual group.
But if you saw him walking alone through campus? His gaze was locked in front of him. He never smiled at people he passed, so people often avoided him.
"I'm also not the type of person to drink that much tequila," you sighed. Your face was moving to burrow into the pillow beneath you, which only made Yeosang laugh more.
Deep down, you knew you couldn't get tired of Yeosang. The physical chemistry between the two of you was undeniable. He also has become such a pivotal part of your life, as someone you confided in. He saw you truly at your lowest and highest.
I guess that is what made it easy to fall for him. The way he treated you made you feel like a princess. You couldn't help but wonder if there was something more than just friends with benefits.
As your dating life hit obstacles, Yeosang was quick to remind you of your worth. He would take you out into the city, treating you to dinner or attending events with you. He was also rather affectionate with you, a quickly you didn't see often even with his closest friends. He seemed a bit standoffish to the rest of the world. Yet, with you, you were the one that seemed to crack the code of who was Kang Yeosang.
There was no way you would dare to open up that conversation. For the most part, you were content with just being friends with benefits. Emphasis on the friends part. He was too important in your life just to allow the rush of butterflies to override your brain. Part of you was convinced that you only felt this way about Yeosang was because you had been single for some time now, and Yeosang offered everything that you wanted in a partner.
You only seemed to allow yourself to play into that fantasy when you were alone in your bedroom. Often, with your fingertips playing with your clit as you would close your eyes to think what it would be like to be Kang Yeosang's girlfriend.
"I think I'm going to hop in the shower. Care to join me for round 2?" "As much as I'd love that, I think I need to get something in my stomach." "Yeah, of course. Why don't you let me shower up real quick and we'll figure out where to go, ok?"
Just another reason why you adored Yeosang. He never pressured you to have sex with him, even though you often felt things were one-sided between the two of you. It was always you messaging him first, always you who orgasmed first. Sometimes, you wished Yeosang would be selfish and ask for you to come over.
As Yeosang slipped into his bedroom, you took the time to slip on one of Yeosang's shirt. He never seemed to mind, as you often left his place wearing one of his shirts. You were positive three or four had claimed refuge in your dresser. Before you ventured downstairs, you also made sure to slip on a pair of clean boxers from Yeosang's own dresser.
Hearing the shower head turn on, you slipped downstairs. You heard a slight commotion from downstairs. But you didn't need to see to already know the rest of the house was up and active.
"And look who it is. Mrs. Kang, nice of you to show your face instead of just hearing you," Mingi called out with a playful smirk.
The rest of the boys were crowded around the kitchen island, eating cereal except for San. He had his back turned towards you and the rest of the group. They were all snickering at Mingi's comment but quickly stopped when you smacked the back of Mingi's head.
"Where is the boyfriend anyways? Still asleep?" Yunho asked. "First of all, he is not my boyfriend. Second, could it kill any of you to make coffee?" You playfully whined. "Already on it, chief," San called out.
He stepped to reveal the glorious sight coffee being brewed in the coffee pot. You could just kiss San right now! "At least I can always depend on you, San," you said playfully.
All the boys were special to you, all thanks to Yeosang. They easily became like brothers of your own, having a special place in your heart. You kissed San's cheek gently before going to retrieve two coffee mugs for you, San, and Yeosang who would eventually appear.
"Don't let Yeosang see you. He might get jealous," Wooyoung laughed. "Unless that's her aim. You know, jealousy sex is the best especially when your boyfriend thinks you're into one of his friends." "And how would you know?" San asked, an eyebrow raised. "Your room isn't next to theirs." Your cheeks were flushed bright red. Maybe you should have stuck it out in the shower with Yeosang. You'd be safe from the ridicule and probably on your second orgasm by now.
"Yeosang isn't my boyfriend," you sighed. "Really? But that's the contact name he has saved for you in his phone."
The room suddenly got dead silent. All eyes were shifted to Wooyoung who was staring at your like a deer caught in headlights. You were staring forward, facing the cabinets before slowing turning around. Your heart had dropped to your stomach yet picked up again, both with curiosity and excitement.
Okay, maybe you were really into Yeosang.
"What did you say?" You voice was softer. "You know, I don't really know what I'm talking about. It could have been anyone." "Wooyoung!" Yunho hissed. "Shut the fuck up."
Your heart broke again, but this time shattered into pieces. That could also be true. You and Yeosang hadn't quite put a label on the two of you. It just seemed to be a mutual understanding that you were best friends who occasionally had sex. Friends with benefits. That was it, right?
Technically, he was free to see anyone else. At any point, your little scenario could come to an end when one of you finds a significant other. it was something you had acknowledged, but something you hadn't put much thought into.
You chewed on your bottom lip, as your heart and mind were arguing with each other. You hadn't even noticed your eyes were becoming glossy at the thought that Yeosang might be into someone that wasn't you. San's hand on your shoulder brought you back to reality.
"Y/n? Are you ok?"
It was then you became hyperaware that all eyes were on you. Wooyoung looked apologetically, as they were all concerned for you.
"You know, I forgot I promised to study today with a few friends. I'll catch you guys later."
Before any of them could stop you, you began rushing upstairs to Yeosang's room. Luckily, the shower was still running so you could make your great escape. You slipped on your sweatpants and jacket, gathering all your belongings into your purse.
The shower suddenly stopped. Fuck.
You bolted out of the room just as the door was opening from the bathroom, light and steam escaping into the hallway. You had made it halfway down the staircase when Yeosang seemed to call out to you. But you didn't have the guts to turn back around. Not when you felt like you couldn't breathe.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You just ran out of there?!" Hongjoong asked.
You groaned as out loud as you could, not too loud though as you didn't want to draw attention to yourself. After running out, you tried distracting yourself around your apartment but it was no use. This called for an emergency meeting with your best friend, Kim Hongjoong.
Hongjoong was a sophomore when you met him as a freshman. He kindly held your hair when you were throwing up at his house party, and you've been joined at the hip since. Hongjoong was attending grad school much to your benefit. He was still available for 911 Boy Trouble calls.
Tonight, you therapy session was over a pitcher of cocktails at your local college bar. Hongjoong knew all about Yeosang, as he too thought you two were together.
"What else was I supposed to do? Wooyoung blurted that apparently I'm Yeosang's girlfriend without him even saying so? And then brought up the fact that it might've been someone else? They had a front row view to me falling apart." "Remind me to smack some sense into Wooyoung." "I think Yunho already beat you to that one," you laughed softly. "Have you talked to Yeosang since?"
You shook your head, staring down into the pitcher of your drink. Your local college bar was known for these pitchers, putting gummies in them for an extra treat. You were staring down basically into a swimming pool of gummy worms and sweet alcohol.
Yeosang has been trying to call you all day today, probably confused why you got up and ran out. it was very unlike you, especially not to tell him your whereabouts. You were sure his roommates were filling him in though about what went down in the kitchen. The last thing you wanted was to confess why exactly you ran out of the apartment.
Hongjoong didn't say anything at first. And it was starting to scare you. Did he also know something you didn't? You peered up to see Hongjoong almost staring through you. You raised an eyebrow, trying to figure out what was going on. It became clear that he was looking behind you, which naturally made you turn around.
Once again, you felt your heart shatter. You didn't want to become accustomed to this feeling, but it was getting worse each time.
There were Yeosang, San, and Mingi. Wooyoung and Yunho had found themselves at the bar, probably ordering for the group. Normally, you would have been elated to see the group and probably would have gone over. That is, if there wasn't a girl sandwiched between Yeosang and San.
Who was she? Was she with Yeosang or San? Was this the alleged girlfriend Wooyoung actually was referring to?
"Y/n, don't even bother," Hongjoong began.
Quickly turning back around, you downed your drink. Hongjoong's eyes widened as he watched you, still halfway through his first one. He's seen you drink before, but not that quickly.
This evening was definitely taking a turn.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Y/n, come on. We're going home," Hongjoong announced.
He was trying his best to sound stern with you, but he was honestly concerned about you. He has never seen this bad before. He's never seen anyone drink 5 pitchers without splitting them with someone. It was as if you were trying to prove to yourself you could live a life without Yeosang in it.
"Nooooo," you whined out. "Just one more, Joongie, please." "Absolutely not. We are going home."
He was trying his best to get you outside, so he could order an Uber for the two of you. Hongjoong had a few drinks, trying to keep up with you, but still sober enough to know getting behind the wheel was the worse thing for the two of you. All he wanted was to get you in your apartment, get some water in your system, and tuck you into bed.
Hongjoong was trying to keep you stable, as you were swaying back and forth. You made numerous attempts to go up to the bar to order for yourself, but the bartender refused. You then had tried getting Hongjoong to buy you another drink, but he had already bought 5 out of your 6 rounds. It was time to call quits.
"Look, I know you're upset, y/n, sweetheart. But this isn't going to help you. You're going to have a massive headache in the morning and be even more upset." "But I want to stay."
People were staring at you. Of course, there were tales of people getting too crazy at the bar. You just never thought you would be one of those people.
"Hongjoong, you heard her." A voice announced from the two of you. "She doesn't want to leave."
Looking over your shoulder, you scoffed to see it was Yeosang standing behind you. His friends including the mystery girl, and everyone at the bar, were watching the three of you. Your hands were resting on Hongjoong's arms, so you wouldn't go slipping onto the floor since your legs were wobbly.
"Maybe you can talk some sense into her?" Hongjoong reasoned.
Getting a look at you, Yeosang then realized that Hongjoong was just trying to do the right thing. Your skin was pale from all the alcohol and lack of food you consumed. Your eyes were glazed over, as you tried your best to maintain eye contact. You did need to go home.
"Sweet girl, he's right. You need to go home." "And why should I?" you slurred. "Just to have sex with you again and have you drop me?" "You know I'd never do that to you," he responded, his voice stern.
Yeosang glanced between you and Hongjoong, nodding. He extended his arms, knowing you couldn't walk on your own but offering for Hongjoong to pass you off to him. Slowly, Hongjoong brought you into Yeosang's arms.
Once he had you in his arms, he made sure one arm was wrapped around you to support you up. He flexed his arms just for the support and to pull you in close to him. His other hand had cupped your cheek, causing you to look up at him slowly. He offered a gentle smile to which made you still feel all warm and tingly despite the amount of times you wanted to cry over him today. Damn him.
"Come on, angel. We are going to go home, ok?"
There were murmurs around the two of you. Surprised to see Yeosang show an ounce of kindness.
"Is the Uber already ordered?" Hongjoong shook his head but did pull out his phone. "No, I was going to wait until we got outside. I thought the cool air might help her, but I can order it for the two of you. Just text me when you get her home?"
Yeosang thanked quickly before helping you out of the bar. He could care less about his reputation of being a lone wolf, someone not to be messed with, dissolved just by his actions. All that mattered was getting you home.
Luckily, the Uber was right around the corner. Perks of going to a university in a major city. Yeosang held you up right still. His hand now tucking strands of his hair behind your ear as he looked at you softly yet with so much concern. God, it felt like your heart was going to combust.
"What's going on, sweetheart? You have been hard to reach all day, and now you don't tell me when you plan on drinking? You know I like to be in the same room just to make sure you're okay." "And interrupt your date? No thanks," you huffed. "Date? You think San is my type?"
Your eyes narrowed in on him, and he realized it was no joking matter. His hand came back to cup your cheek, keeping your eyes locked on his. He desperately wanted to figure out what was troubling your mind.
"Yeosang, I saw you. You were on a date with some girl. Wooyoung also said you had a girlfriend. I thought I was more than a side piece to you!"
Before Yeosang could answer, the Uber pulled up. He rolled down the window, asking if it was for Hongjoong for which Yeosang just played along. He definitely owed your friend for this favor.
The Uber driver unlocked the backdoor, allowing Yeosang to open it. He helped you in, making sure you didn't knock your knees against the back of the passenger seat or fall over. He then leaned over to buckle you in. You were his priority.
"Y/n, I can promise you that she is not my girlfriend," he whispered.
Once again, you scoffed at him. How stupid did he think you were? That just because you had a bit to drink that you'd believe every word he said? Your arms crossed over your chest, turning away from him. Yeosang couldn't help but smirk and snicker at you. He never realized how adorable you could get when you were frustrated especially at him.
Not wanting to keep the driver waiting, Yeosang quickly jogged around to the opposite side of the car. Just where you were looking at. You groaned as his eyes met yours once the door was open and he slid in.
Great.
Yeosang buckled up, so that the driver wouldn't get annoyed with you two. Plus, the quicker you could get home, the sooner you could be put to bed.
"Y/n, I mean it. That is not my girlfriend. She's one of Yunho's friends. He is actually trying to set her up with San." "Then why were you sitting beside her?"
He chuckled as he noticed you were jealous on top of being drunk. Interesting. Yeosang leaned in gently to press a kiss to your cheek, moving his lips to whisper into your ear.
"Just didn't want to make her feel trapped with San. I didn't want to put her in the corner where she was stuck with San. I could easily get up if she wanted to leave," he explained. "Better question though, my dear, is are you jealous?"
Your eyes widened and jaw dropped. You were trying to rack through all the excuses you could come up with, but your drunk mind was failing you. Everyone knew you to be quick on your feet. Not tonight.
"And what if I am?" You asked softly. "I like knowing you are jealous and protective of me," he smirked. "I mean, if anyone is my girlfriend, it would be you."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your eyes fluttered once again, just like yesterday. Immediately, you groaned as there was a sharp headache. The brightness in your bedroom didn't help either.
"Good morning, sweet girl."
It was then your eyes shot open. What? You looked over beside you to see Yeosang, shirtless, in your bed. You looked down to see you had gotten changed out of the black tube top and ripped jeans into an oversized shirt. One of Yeosang's that was stored at your place.
"We didn't-" "Hell no. You're extremely attractive, y/n, but you were so drunk. I didn't want to take disadvantage of you, so you yelled at me, got changed into one of my shirts, and fell asleep. I just moved you so you were more comfortable in bed."
You nodded slowly, chewing on your bottom lip. You yelled at him? "Sorry," you muttered.
"No, it's ok. I kind of deserved it."
What was he talking about now? It was getting exhausting that everyone else seemed to have an idea of what was going on besides you.
"Something about how I'm not honest with you. And that if you were actually my girlfriend, you would actually say it then pretending we just fuck like bunnies." "I mean, it's true," you sighed.
Yeosang nodded understandably. He never met to drag out confessing his feelings for you. Truthfully, Yeosang had never been good at expressing his emotions. He liked the fact that you spent so much time together that a lot of people assumed you were together. He just believed you two were on the same page without needing to communicate it.
"Are labels really that important when I am 100% certain about my feelings for you?"
Now you made full eye contact with him. You were laying on your back as he was propped up on his side, turned towards you. Even after seeing you at your messiest, he still looked at you like you were the rarest gem found.
"Some sort of indicator that you like me like that would have been helpful, Yeosang," you whispered. "Does this help?"
Slowly, he moved to hover above you. His hand slid over to hold your hip, squeezing your hipbone affectionately. The other hand moved to cup your face. There was no doubt in his mind. He leaned in slowly to press his lips against you.
He kissed you with everything in him. All the words unspoken were communicated through that kiss. The force of his lips pushed your head back into the pillow slightly, but you were quick to reciprocate. Your arms wrapped around his neck, fingers running through his hair which caused him to smile into the kiss.
"Call it whatever you want, baby. If you want to be boyfriend and girlfriend, we are. I already know you're all mine, and I don't want to shy away from it anymore," he murmured against your lips.
You pulled back, so you could look into his eyes. This time, he was one nervously biting his lip. Did he say too much? Did he say the wrong thing? Fuck, he's never been this nervous before. "I'm yours and you're all mine," you vowed. "Let's just never let Wooyoung decide our next move before we do." "Deal."

Chapter 3
There was a somber feeling in the air that night.
As the evening transferred into night, and the sky became a dark canvas with the faint light of the moon illuminating the landscape, Seonghwa stood by the window staring blankly at his surroundings. The faint noise of faraway dogs barking could be heard and as Seonghwa gazed at the blanket of stars above him, he closed his eyes and inhaled a deep breath in an attempt to help calm his whirring mind and drown out the outside noise. There was currently a whirlwind of thoughts swirling throughout his mind and unfortunately for him, he had to wait till the morning to find out the outcome.
Seonghwa really liked you. He couldn’t control the somersaults his heart did when his mind raced about you. You came back into his life and brought forth a kaleidoscope of colours and a feeling of warmth and bliss that he hadn’t experienced in a long time. When he recognized it was you, he was entranced by your beauty and charm — although the entire courtyard was filled with people, his gaze was fixed on you and he felt pure happiness watching you gracefully twirl and dance to the rhythm of the music.
However, there was another thought also plaguing his mind. Seonghwa hadn’t seen San since the news broke throughout the palace about his request to the King. He was wondering what his younger brother was doing and thinking. He saw Wooyoung in the hallway along with Yeosang heading to San’s room, and when Wooyoung noticed him, he glared judgingly at the eldest while Yeosang sideyed the two awkwardly. Wooyoung “hmphed” and spun on his heel making his way towards the other end of the palace with Yeosang waddling close behind.
Seonghwa would be lying if he said he didn’t feel bad — he did. It was San who introduced him to you when you were all kids. There were times when you would accompany your Father to work in order to escape certain chores, and when Prince San met you, he grew to appreciate your company after you helped him save and sneak in a stray kitten. However, San pretended to be a guard’s son as he feared you would dislike him like the other kids in the village did, and when he told Seonghwa about you and his charade, Seonghwa chastised him for lying. But then one night, when Seonghwa was looking for a particular constellation, you appeared out of a bush with a bouquet of wildflowers and assisted him and since then, Seonghwa joined San’s charade in order to get to know you.
He couldn’t explain it but there was something about your sweet and cheerful personality and calming presence that he liked…a lot.
However, all good things must come to an end, and as he got older, Seonghwa hardly saw you when he was whisked away for princely duties.
You were still close friends with San and so, Seonghwa would hear about you from the latter. But when mercenaries from another kingdom ambushed the palace one night, you didn’t come back to the palace for a long time. And when your Father retired, it was clear they would never get to see you again. In addition to that, the cracks within their family became more apparent after the events, and friction ensued among the family members, particularly their mothers, and nothing was the same again for the brothers.
Seonghwa never told San about his feelings, he kept it to himself, hoping that for the betrothals you would attend and partake in the event and it would be a simple and expected outcome. But you didn’t, and Seonghwa wasn’t going to settle for someone he didn’t love or at least liked. So when he saw it was you in the courtyard, he knew he had to do something. He wasn’t sure what to do so out of excitement, he told San you were here.
He didn’t expect San to throw the veil. That was when he realised, San likes you too.
After talking with his father, Seonghwa has been cooped up in his and his brothers’ secret hideout, thinking about everything that occurred. Until he was interrupted by Hongjoong.
“Penny for your thoughts?” His brother asks, strolling into the room with a glass of wine in hand.
“No, I’m fine.” Seonghwa responds curtly, without turning to acknowledge his younger brother. He wasn’t in the mood for any conversations right now.
Hongjoong analysed his brother with a raised brow, smirking at his brother’s failed attempt to hide his anxiousness. If there was one person who might be on Seonghwa’s side, it would be Hongjoong. But at this moment, Hongjoong wasn’t sure whose side he was really on. In contrast to San who would never hide anything and was like an open book, Seonghwa kept to himself and hardly ever spoke about what was settling on his mind.
So Hongjoong was extremely surprised when he heard the news. And while he may not care for royal duties and royal plans, he did care deeply for all his brothers.
“The whole palace already knows and not everyone is happy.” Hongjoong announces sipping his drink.
“I know Mother might not be —”
“I think he means San.” Jongho declares.
The two oldest turn to the youngest who is propped by the door with his arms folded. Jongho didn’t know how to approach his eldest brother. At the end of the day, Seonghwa was the oldest out of all of them and while he did have a deep respect for him, San wasn’t only Jongho’s older brother but also his biological brother.
“Tell me brother,” Jongho begins, “What really were you thinking? First you coax San to throw the veil and then you steal his girl?”
“She’s not his girl Jongho. You don’t know —”
“Here’s what I think,” Jongho intervenes, “I think you liked Y/N the moment my brother introduced you to her, she doesn’t remember either of you because you both lied to her about who you really were, San told me that part, and it seems like you wanted to marry her for quite some time now because you’ve gone out of your way to betroth yourself to her.”
“...Okay so maybe you do know.” Seonghwa sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. He was starting to feel a headache coming on.
“He’s right Seonghwa. Everyone knew San liked her.” Hongjoong comments.
“Well I didn’t until today,” Seonghwa answers blankly, “It’s not like I always got to spend time with you all when you got together up here to talk and hang out.”
Hongjoong grimaces a little at the remark but deep down, he knows it’s true. Because of his place in the line of succession, Seonghwa hardly spent time with his brothers. It was only Hongjoong and Yunho who made an effort to spend time with him outside of royal classes.
“Also I didn’t expect he would throw the veil. I told him because, well, I had to tell someone and he was the only one I could tell. I was just as surprised as Y/N was.”
“Fair but after realising, why did you seek her hand behind his back anyway?” Jongho questions.
“I don’t like your tone Choi Jongho.” Seonghwa turns to the youngest and narrows his eyes.
Jongho removes himself from his position and walks towards Seonghwa, facing him with his hands in the air.
“It’s just an honest question. You finally knew, yet, you sought her hand. Shouldn’t you have talked to San first? Moreover, shouldn’t you take into consideration Y/N’s feelings?”
“And what do you mean by that?”
“You’re second in line for the throne, you’re putting not only a lot of pressure on her, you’re also taking away her freedom.”
“It’s not my intention to —”
“Even if it isn’t your intention,” Hongjoong interjects, “You know that the position for who will sit on the throne is an extremely controversial case in our family. Everyone is practically hanging on a thread because of it. And when you think about it, Y/N’s cousin is set to marry Chan soon, and now you want to marry Y/N. You’re putting her in an awkward position.”
Seonghwa processes Hongjoong’s response. He knows it’s all true however, there’s something he hasn’t told them yet.
“I plan to give up my place in line for the Crown.”
Hongjoong and Jongho stare at Seonghwa in pure shock and astonishment, their mouths agape at his revelation.
“I need to sit down.” Jongho says.
“Oh no no no! No you are not!” Hongjoong yells.
“Why not? Minho would be next in line anyway—”
“No, Minho wrote a letter to abdicate his place in the line of succession.” Jongho explains.
“What? Since when?”
“I think he went to the King some time last week. Nothing has been decided yet because his Mother is currently not pleased. So the King said they’ll circle back to it.”
“Why would he do that?”
“Why wouldn’t he? No one wants to rule this dysfunctional place! And neither do I!” Hongjoong exclaims.
“You’re being dramatic Hongjoong.”
“Seonghwa, nobody likes our family. Neither the villagers nor any other kingdom. Our dearest Father has slandered any reputation that Grandfather had, and it will take a lot of work to get anyone to trust us. And I’m not going to volunteer as tribute!”
“Then write a letter of abdication.”
“I can’t, after Minho did if I approach Father next, Mother would surely have my head.”
“Well Chan is still here so…”
“That’s not the point. No one is going to let you abdicate your place. You’ll raise even more hell in this palace if you announce that.”
“So what do I do?” Seonghwa asks frustratedly. All this new information was not only putting a wrench in his plans, but also was slowly driving him to the brink of madness.
“Honestly, you better hope for a miracle,” Hongjoong sighs tiredly, “Because if this marriage goes ahead, she will have to bend in order to fit the role as your wife and have Mother accept her. Otherwise…”
“Otherwise?”
Hongjoong and Jongho glance at each other warily before Jongho clears his throat.
“She will break.”

Chapter I: [School Royalty and Old Friends.]
꒰ ୨୧ ─ ・┈ ・ ─ ・┈ ─ ・┈ ─ ・┈ ꒱꒱
The Academy is one of the most prestigious schools to send your children to. It’s a private college that prides itself on how great the school is and how safe it is for your children.
You got into this school by sheer luck.
Thanks to your mothers Alumni status at this school and her catering business supporting the school, she managed to wriggle you into the school.
She knew how much you wanted to go to it and she knew how much you feared community college due to your past.
So the most she could do as a mother was to get you in a safe comfortable environment where she could keep her eyes on you.
She wanted to prevent what had happened to you before…
She wanted to be able to protect you.
—-----
You had come to the school late in the day, so it was around lunch time, many people were moving around and chatting with friends.
Obviously you didn’t have any friends yet, so you decided to go up to the roof to eat your lunch.
The roof has a beautiful sitting area for students. You looked around for somewhere to sit until your eyes fell on a male that was sitting alone.
He had pretty black hair and beautiful brown eyes. He wore a smooth black suit with a white flower on it. He must’ve noticed that you were staring at him, because he turned to look at you, a confused look on his face.
You gave him a soft smile before asking.
“May I sit with you?”
He seemed taken aback by your question. “Do you not know who I am?..” He asked and you rubbed the back of your neck, confused, you tilt your head to the side.
“Am I supposed to?”
The male simply chuckled and patted the seat beside him,
“No, not at all….”
You smile and went over to sit next to him. You take your lunch out of your bag and place it infront of you. “So what is your name?” You asked.
The male seemed to think for a second before answering.
“Kang Yeosang. Yours?”
“(L/n) (Y/n).”
You push your lunch box in the center of the two of you. Yeosang looked down at it with a raised eyebrow. You happily took a bite with a smile on your face, “Do you want some? My moms a caterer and she had some left over from yesterday.”
Yeosang started for a few moments before smiling and taking a piece of chicken from the box, you watched as he happily munching on it. His eyes lit up but he didn’t say anything.
The two of you continued to talk and got to know each other throughout the rest of the lunch period.
You soon hear the bell ring and see Yeosang start to stand up.
“Well, I have to go now. Will I see you around?” He asked and you nodded along.
“Of Course! You’re really nice!” Yeosang's face heats up and he turns his head slightly. When you went to go to stand up, you noticed a mark on his face. It was actually his birthmark and you were captivated by it. You’d never seen a person with one on their face, and to you it fit the male's face perfectly.
Yeosang turned back to you and chuckled, “Thank you…let’s meet up here from now on.”
He sounded almost sad, he was taking his sweet time walking away from you. Before he left the roof he turned to wave to you before finally leaving off the roof.
You waited until he was gone to let out a squeal of excitement and embarrassment.
On your first day, an attractive guy talked to you and became your friend with barely any effort!
You kept thinking about it, it was on your mind until you got back home.
Your mother was in the kitchen preparing dinner for the two of you when you slammed the front door open.
“MOTHER!!!” You yelled at the top of your lungs, spooking her a bit. You see her come into the living room to see your happy face.
She placed a hand on her heart and gave you a playful hit on your shoulder. “God! You can’t do that Darling! You nearly gave your momma a heart attack!”
You giggled happily as you flopped on the couch. “I met a really cute boy today at school and he wants to continue meeting up with me at school!!!” You say nearly falling off the couch as you trailed off.
Your mother giggled softly as she watched your little freak out.
Your mother helped you off the floor and led you to the kitchen, she sat you down and allowed you to ramble on about Yeosang. “I’m so happy for you pumpkin..” She said in response and it earned a bright smile from you.
Your mother smiled as she turned back to cooking, she sighed to herself.
She was happy that you were getting along with others already. She didn’t know if she could handle another incident. She had to keep you safe.
She had to make sure you continued to be happy and okay.
—---------------------------------------------
The next day you were giddy, and you arrived on campus excited to start your first full day of classes.
You walked in waiting for class when you saw a group of girls excitedly waiting by one of the school entrances.
“Oh my god! Here he comes!!”
“He’s so attractive!!”
“Look at me! I’m so perfect for you!!!”
You rolled your eyes, trying to push pass the many girls to try to get to your classroom only to have your eyes widen as they fell onto who they were screaming for.
It was Yeosang, and as soon as he arrived girls swarmed him.
That’s probably why he asked if you knew who he was, this boy was practically school royalty it seems!
You stared in awe, not meaning to make eye contact with Yeosang. He smiled at you before pushing past people to make it over to you.
You watched as the other girls surrounding him parted like the red sea and allowed him to get to you. When he finally reached you, he grabbed your hands with a gentle smile.
“I didn’t know you were a new student Y/n. You should’ve told me.” You shook your head,
“It wasn’t that important…how’d you find out anyways?” Yeosang averted his eyes for a bit.
“I’ll tell you later, let me walk you to class..”
You had no say in the matter as the male grabbed your hand and took you to your first period class. You could feel the eyes staring into the back of your head.
The jealous murmurs were loud in your ears and suddenly the hand that you were holding felt hot.
“Who is she?”
“And who does she think she is?”
“Idk but she has no right being that close to Yeosang..”
“She looks like a poor welfie bitch…”
You knew that this was going to cause problems for you in the future but you really couldn’t think about that with Yeosang being around you. It was like he had this calming aura around him.
Your first class was Digital media and Yeosang waved you goodbye and walked away from the door. You smiled and turned to walk into the classroom. You went to sit at a computer in the back of the class and sat down.
You noticed some others walking in after you, all talking to each other and picking other seats. You looked down at your phone to text your mother that you got to your class safely.
You heard ruffling around, then a voice.
“N/n..is that you?”
That voice made you freeze, when you raised your head you made eye male with short dark colored hair, he had rounded glasses on and dressed in oversized fashion and a camera hung around his neck.
It took you a moment before your memory clicked.
“Hongjoong!” You got up out your chair and hugged the male tightly who excitedly hugged you back.
Kim Hongjoong was your best friend from your highschool, he was your protector, always hovering behind you and making sure that you were okay. The two of you were big art nerds, always in the art studio or outside taking pictures with his camera.
You thought you would never see him again…after the incident…
“No!! Please wake up y/n….”
You could barely keep your eyes open, your body felt like shit. It felt like it was on fire, your blood was pulsing through you as you laid on the studio floor.
It was wet around you…you couldn’t tell if it was blood or paint solvant.
You heard footsteps coming towards you as your head was now placed in someones lap.
“H..hongjoong?...”
“Shh…just hold on y/n..”
Your memory was hazy, the most you could remember was waking up in the ICU. You could hear the anger in your mothers voice and the concern in Hongjoong’s mother’s tone. The both of them were talking (or yelling) at who you could only assume was the chancellor of the school.
Whenever critical events happened involving students, he would arrive to assess the situation.
Your mother told you it was only to save face.
You could feel a warm hand on yours, and you assumed it was Joong.
“That’s it! I am pulling my daughter out of your school!!”
Those words shattered Hongjoong’s heart. He knew damned well that if he was with you that day, if he would have listened to his better judgment and followed you to your class. That you wouldn’t be in this predicament, that you would be fine…
And that you wouldn’t be leaving him..
“Please…don’t take her away from me…”
“Don’t take my bestfriend…”
—-
Hongjoong’s sigh breaks you out of your trance as he finally pulls away from you. He gets a good look at your face before breaking out into a big grin.
“I’m so glad to see you again…” “Same to you Joongie…” You replied, the nickname making a soft blush cross the males face.
Hongjoong then moved to sit down beside you as the teacher finally came in to start your class period.
The two of you barely ended up paying attention at all to the professor as you mostly caught up on everything you missed. You had blocked out the world and the only thing you were focused on was your best friend and how much you missed him.
What broke the two of you out of your little trance was the bell that signaled the end of class, luckily Hongjoong’s schedule was the same as yours, so he made sure he walked with you to class, his hand wrapped tightly around yours.
But as you walked around with Hongjoong you could feel more and more jealous stares burning holes into the back of your head. You didn’t dare to look up to meet the eyes of the girls who were obviously jealous.
You really hoped and prayed that Hongjoong wasn’t popular like Yeosang and had fangirls, though…
The comments you heard said otherwise.
“Not hongjoong too!”
“That fucking slut!”
“Does she really think she can waltz in here and take not one, but two members of Ateenagerz.”
You gripped Hongjoong’s hand tighter, keeping the group name in the back of your head.
You just wanted to get to and from class without any hassle. You didn’t want them, they were just your friends, one of which you had literally just met!
Though you made a mental note when you got home to look up that group name.
School went by fast, especially with Hongjoong by your side. He waited beside you as you waited for your mom to arrive. “I bet your mom will be surprised to see me..” he jokes, nudging you.
You rolled your eyes at him playfully, “Yea sure, I’m pretty sure she misses her fake son..” You replied, starting to walk up as you noticed her car pull up.
You hopped in the passenger side as Hongjoong came over to the window, waving to you mother. She took a moment to realize who that was until she let out a huge excited gasp.
“Kim Hongjoong!?” She exclaimed and he chuckled at her.
“In the flesh, it’s nice to see you again Miss (L/n)”
Your mom looked at you and you gave the look that said ‘I’ll explain later’. She nodded and gave the boy a bright smile. “Well if you’re here I know my Y/n is in good hands..” he nods and winks at the two of you.
“You know it! See you tomorrow N/n!” He waved goodbye and went over to a group of 7 boys, and you could’ve sworn you saw Yeosang amongst that group.
That only made you pull out your phone quicker. There was a website that your school had that allowed you to see all organizations on campus. You learned this from the bit of Digital Media class that you managed to pay attention to.
You talked to your mom about your day on the way home as you decide to search of the group name you heard the girls mention.
‘Ateenagerz…’
You hit send.
And your eyes widened.
[Ateenagerz is a group of 8 bestfriends, they are a mixing pot of some of the best of the best in the school. Not only that, they help out around the school and are the head of most extracurricular clubs. Ateenagerz is just their main group, a club of popular friends who sometimes make music…]
And just your fucking luck.
Your new friend, Yeosang was a member, you spotted him first in the picture that they had on the school’s website.
But that wasn’t all. Not only was Hongjoong also a member.
He was the leader of the goddamn club.
“Fuck…”
—-----
“Hyung…”
Hongjoong stopped editing the pictures he had taken today to turn to see Yeosang standing in the doorway.
Yeosang walked over with a gentle smile. “I didn’t know you knew Y/n…” Hongjoong hummed in response, leaning back in his chair. “Mhm…she’s my bestfriend…” He starts before sitting back up, he then goes to open a file on his computer. He motions for Yeosang to come closer.
He smiles at the younger male, “It took me a while to find her, but I didn’t expect for her to waltz right into our school..” He answers, anaylzing your school files. He sighed longingly as he looked at your school picture.
“I’m just glad she’s okay…” He mumbles and Yeosang nods. “We need to tell the others to be on the lookout for her. I refuse to let what happened to her happen again.”
“Alright. I’ll send a message in the groupchat now.”
Hongjoong hummed as his phone pinged, signaling that Yeosang had sent the message.
[K. Yeo to Ateenzagerz]
K.Yeo: We’ve found her :). Everyone please come to the Digital Media Classroom for emergency meeting.
Joong: That means now. It's urgent.
WooYoung: Awww…right now? Me and San were just about to go get food..
Joong: Your ass better be here before 5;30 or else.
WooYoung:...Jeez..yes captain…damn.
Sannie: Gotcha! I’ll grab Jongho, Mingi and Yunho! They had practice.
Hwa<;3: Already was on the way. I also have some more information.
Hongjoong smiled down at his phone.
He wasn’t going to let you get harmed again. He refused to let you get harmed again.
And he was going to make sure no one dared lay a finger on you again.
“I finally found you again….N/n”

Chapter 6 : The Story
With every coming day, you are taking your trainings from the seniors and mainly helping with the navigation. You seem to have started developing friendships with many people on the ship, but it's quiet hard to gain seniors trusts yet, San has been your friend from first day, Wooyoung next. But it is most hardest to even hold the conversation with Seonghwa and Jongho, they seem a little too tough. And Captain, its a very distant case. He hasn't spoken to you after your first encounter. He eventually strolls around the ship and whenever you both spot each other, you try to give him a smile but he just gives you judgemental look or a short stare. It makes you feel like you've done something gravely wrong and he is judging you for that. Lately, you have also felt like someone has been watching you, it's just a feeling, when you scan around, you spot no one around you.
But, you are also quiet enjoying your time on the ship. Some days ago you also met Captain's dear pet, a very cute and talkative Parrot, who likes to mimic all the seniors. So far he has been making all the seniors embarrassed by saying silly things in their voices. His name is Crescent, and the story behind this is that he was found by Captain on the crescent moon night. But he was in very badly injured condition. Captain bought him to the ship and got him treated with the help of Yunho. The Captain also gave Crescent a collar made of gold and gems embedded on it with the bird's name craved on it. This made him look like a Royal Parrot. Since then Crescent has also been helping Captain perform tasks like delivering and carrying some urgent messages. No matter how far Crescent goes, he eventually finds his way back to the ship, no matter wherever the ship may be. He is also very intelligent.
And recently he has for sure gained liking towards you. He surprises you with suddenly sitting on your head or shoulder and sulks when you don't pet him. He does not speak alot but eventually teases any crewmate passing by. He also tells you if he wants anything. When Wooyoung saw your and Crescent first interaction, he was shocked because, Crescent's initial interaction with Wooyoung was just Crescent biting him whenever Wooyoung approached Crescent. Wooyoung also said that Cresent never easily trust any people. If Cresent like anyone that means that person passed the trust check. On the ship, Cresent's judgement is considered second important after the Captain.
So far it's been all good. But most of the crew is curious about Wonderland and all the things that happen inside Wonderland. And so, to clear everyone's doubts there is going to be a secret story session tonight after dinner. You are extremely excited for the night, to know more about the Wonderlands secrets. All the new crewmates and the other who are excited to know about Wonderland are all secretly invited to the session but keeping this away from the Captain and Seonghwa. Even though its kept a secret from them, its sure that they will eventually know about this. Nothing remains a secret on this ship for a long time.
But, on the other hand this session is beneficial for all the crew to know what they are going to get themselves into. After this, they can decide whether they want to join Captain into the Wonderland or not. Many information about Wonderland will be shared which not every other person knows. The fact that the Navigator, Yeosang will be leading the session while other seniors will help him fill in the any missing details of the story.
And the night finally comes. After dinner all of the interested crewmates are gathered in one of the reserved store room on the stern of the ship. Doors closed, all of the crewmates sitting in circle with candles in the middle. Everyone is so curious and excited for the story to start. All the seniors sitting at one side, while everyone else listening like the curious audiences.

“So, it all starts from actually long time ago, when the XCARS, the Gods of different powers and possessing the ability to give any supernatural powers to any common person of their wish. The RAVENS who were the devil's possessing the dark powers, the powers that can destroy the whole universe, declared the war against the XCARS. But, the XCARS we only 5 in number whereas the RAVENS were a massive clan of brainwashed people. At that time the XCARS asked for the help from all the Kimgdoms on the earth. They asked for the Army of the Soldiers as much as possible. And humans decided to help. The XCARS blessed all those soldiers and the royalties with some powers that would help them win the war easily. With the help of human soldiers, the XCARS did win the war, and all the RAVENS were sent to the most gruesome and horrendous place in the hell for what they did over many years. After winning the war, the XCARS decides to let the soldiers and the royalties have all the powers. But then they started misusing the powers. They started using those powers for their own satisfaction and own benefit. The people grew more and more greedy and was fighting among themselves. So before going to reside back in the Cloud Palace, the XCARS took back all the powers that was granted to the humans.
But the XCARS knew that humans has done alot for them. Especially all the Kings who lend them their soldiers. So they really wanted to do something for them, for humans. But they also knee that humans were greedy. If humans get anything easily, they simply crave for more and more, and there is no end or limits to humans desire. So they had to give humans something that they gain with their hardwork, by this, humans could realise the joy of getting the award that they have worked hard for. That's why they gifted with Rufescent Gem. One of the most beautiful gem in the world. Its Reddish in colour and during full moon it changes its colour, to remind the War that was won by the XCARS on full moon night. This gem is available in every part of this earth, but you will get it only if you work hard to find it.
But,the twist is you can't sell the stone to anyone because once a person finds it, it will glow only if he possess the stone. If he tries to sell it to anyone it will lose its abilities. So because of this, the person who wants to posses the stone, has to work hard for it.
But, for the royals, they decided to awards them with something big. The XCARS knew that if they let the Royals have some powers, they might rule their kingdom with more ease and with the intention of making their kingdom a better place to live for anyone. And…..they also knew that if they are granted the powers easily, they might again turn on the wrong path. That's why they gifted the earth with Wonderland. Where, by completing all the tasks, the Royals can wish for any power of their desire.”
“That sounds easy, then why does very less number of Kings has ever survived the Wonderland? There should have been more, right?” One of the curious crewmate asks.
Yeosang starts again.
“It's not as easy as it looks. The Wonderland does not consist of any simple games that any child can play. Even many trained King's and Warriors can not complete the game. The Kings who were greedy for power has never returned from the Wonderland and those who actually wanted to dp something for the betterment of their kingdom and their subjects, won the games and were granted with powers. The Wonderland has specific rules that the players need to follow. The game can be completed only if the rules are followed.”
“Then, is there any information of the rules of the games??” Another crewmate asks.
This time, San answers. “No, there is no specific information about the rules. Some people has even contacted with the only 3 King's that has ever survived the Wonderland. But, the Wonderland put the restrictions on the winners ti not to tell the specifications of the games. If the rules are leaked, there will be consequences for the winner.”
As San is done with his explanation he gestures Yeosang to continue further story.
“But, some basic information and rules are available for us to know.
1- The people entering the Wonderland should be from the Royal family. Commoners are not granted the entry in Wonderland.
2- Only one Kingdom can enter the Wonderland and play at a time. If another kingdom tries to enter Wonderland forcefully while other is playing, there would be clash of energies and the trespassing kingdom will be thrown out. If the Wonderland restricts you entry, you should understand that another one is playing.
3-There are tem gems that you have to acquire by playing ten games. The same player cannot play the games again and again. 9 different players have to play the initial 9 games by their own, other can help and support them from far. And the 10th and the last, game is the group game. It fully depends on the trust, coordination, control, understanding and all other aspects that are required for the group to win. By winning each game, you can retrieve a gem at the end of it. Later on you go back to the start of Wonderland and submit all the ten gems in some sort of sockets.
4- After submitting the gems, the players who actually played can wish for any power they desire. And when asked for the power the players should also tell the reason behind having that power. The reasons should be genuine. No ill intentions.
5- After the powers are granted, the winners slowly starts to see the changes. They slowly starts to realise their powers. The Wonderland not only gifts the players but all their kingdom, with some little things. The kingdom can also visibly realise the changes. The Wonderland also watched over the Winner after they have returned to their kingdom, it watches if the winners are using their powers for good or not. Wonderland is not just a place, it's an entity itself. It can speak and also watch.
This is the most information we could gather till now.”
There is a pause. Everyone is still processing the new information. Recalling all the rules again, to asks their doubts. And, one raise his hand to ask the question.
“What if, these rules are broken? Are there any consequences?”
The answer to this question is on Yeosang's tongue, but he contemplates whether to tell everyone or not. But he has to, the crewmates should know what they are getting themselves into.
He continues.
“Yes, there are consequences. And the best I can do to explain the consequences is to tell you all the <Tale Of Ynitasia>”
Here, the another story starts. As he spells the name, you have goosebumps over your body. You don't know why, but there is this feeling in the pit of your stomach, something strange feeling that you cannot figure out. You have actually heard some light news about Ynitasia, but never heard the actual story. Your already curious self, becomes more curious for some reason.
“You All must have heard about Ynitasia at least once in life. One of the most spoken Kingdom on the earth. Let's start from beginning when Ynitasia was at it's peak. Ynitasia was one of the most looked up to Kingdom in the east. It had the most skilled warriors, rich commoners and even richer Royals. It is said that there were no beggars on that land. Also having the best resources available, best constructions, most amazing sea techniques, clever cultivation and most importantly a happy and welcoming kingdom. Ynitasia was also the possessor of the world's most expensive and rarest gem, MARILEAN. A ‘Marine’ stone which was ‘Cerulean’ in colour. That's where it gets its name from. Ynitasia had everything a successful kingdom needed. But one day the king decided to go to Wonderland to make his kingdom even more efficient and by possessing All those powers, Ynitasia would've become the best Kingdom all over the world.”
“But, here is where it all starts. The king suddenly decides to go to Wonderland but he did not have the team that required enough preparation and mental and physical training. They did everything in haste. The king did enter the Wonderland and won some games, each game, he grew more and more greedy for the powers, he was blinded, but in one game he lost, he couldn't complete the game. That brought him out of his rage and overconfidence. He couldn't bear it, he wasn't ready to face the consequences and he forcefully tried to get out of the Wonderland. In that rush, he lost his and his crewmates life. All of them were dead. The king also took his daughter, Princess of Ynitasia with him, because she insisted. She was just a teenage girl. He was so confident that he would return back, that he took the risk of taking the only princess of Ynitasia with him. They lost her too. The only rightful heir.”
There is a pause.
“The day King died, that night everything changed for Ynitasia. That day was the worst day ever for them, the worst that could happen to anyone. The flowers died, the houses made of marble and expensive wood, turned into mud houses, with creepers surrounding them, the Palace was all surrounded with creepers and mush, the walls became cracked, the expensive clothes that the people were wearing became torn from places, people lost most of the wealth that they had, sickness started taking over people of Ynitasia. The dark gloom surrounded the island of Ynitasia. Ynitasia was cursed by Wonderland. Seeing this, there was chaos in the whole kingdom. The King's wife couldn't believe that it was true, that the king died. No one was ready to believe. At that time, the second rightful heir to the throne, King's brother's son. Prince of Ynitasia, he couldn't resist. He decided to go out and search for the King and his father. He took some of his friends, warriors and other experts from the kingdom. At that time the Prince was also just 16 years old. Sudden after what happened, he felt responsible for all the things. He felt that he should set things right. He set the sail to Wonderland, but some days later, some broken parts of the ship washed up on the shore of the Ynitasia from the direction where the prince went to. The people and Queen waited for some more days, but no sign of the Prince. A storm shortly hit Ynitasia after that incident and everyone considered that they also lost the Prince in that storm. Ynitasia was broken, they lost all of their hope. Their hope to stand back again, was all broken.”
“After some days, Ynitasia received a scroll, it magically appeared on the porch of the Palace. It read, that the king died in Ynitasia, but nothing about the Prince. It confirmed the death of King. Wonderland also said that, if the next rightful heir or any other kingdom plays in the name of Ynitasia and wins, Ynitasia would come back to its glory. As their successor sets the foot on the land of Ynitasia, everything would suddenly change, it would all become like before. The kingdom would also need to crown that person as the King or Queen of Ynitasia. This would completely eliminate the curse on Ynitasia making it as joyous as before. But, that day never came for Ynitasia. It's believed that the Queen does manages the things in Ynitasia now, but she is sick and still mourning and waiting that someday the king would return with Prince, Princess and the warriors.”
“What happened to Ynitasia was brutal and they are still in that misery. The gloom still surrounds Ynitasia. Nobody knows when they will be free from the curse. If nobody wins for Ynitasia, it will continue to live in that curse forever.”
There is pin drop silence in the room. Everyone feels something after listening to the story. Some are deep in thought, some are confused, some feel bad for Ynitasia, some are terrified after listening to the brutality of Wonderland. Every crew's decision depends upon how they take in the story.
“If you want to see if what happened to Ynitasia is real or not, then in two days we are going to pass by that kingdom. You can see it for yourself.” Yunho instructs.
Wooyoung starts with next instructions,
“Well, one more important thing that we have to tell. Before going to Wonderland, we will stop on an island or restock a d stuff. Before that you have to take decision whether to follow eight of us, into the Wonderland or not. Because only 10 people will be playing this game, and if we win, only 10 of us will have the benefit. There are chances, we might lose some of our crew in the Wonderland, even we can lose our life. But we are ready to face everything in Wonderland to win. We are so determined to win, because we want to bring good to Ignim, turn that land, into a non-pirare zone, make it safe for trading with other lands, start many facilities for people and children to make living efficient. We can't dream to have all of the luxuries like another big kingdoms, but we can start from basics. Slowly slowly providing and spreading the amenities all over Ignim and slowly opening it up for people of other land. We want people to think more of Ignim than just a Pirate land. We want to welcome people into our land and gradually end pirating. It might take some time but we know, the right way of persuasion can change people's mind. This is what we are so desperate for. At the end, it's your decision.”
The way he speaks about their dreams for Ignim, just feels your heart with somewhat pride and motivation. If you guide them, they can get step closer to achieve their dream and you will be somewhat part of it. You have to do it, not only for yourself but them too.
As you thought that today's story session is over and now it's time to go to bed, a crewmate raises his hand out of no where for a last question
“But master, you said that only Royals have entry in the Wonderland. Then, how is Wonderland going to grant us entry when no one among us is a Royal?”
There is a chorus of “ohhhh"s from all the crewmates as this question really makes everyone think.
Mingi smirks, as if he was prepared for this question. With a sigh he says,
“We have a solution for that-”

ateez - when their s/o gets sick
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
genre: fluff with a bit of comfort.
cw: none that I’m aware.
summary: what ateez would do to try and help when their s/o gets sick, no illnes in specific.
disclaimer: this is a work of fiction made for entertainment and form my point of view with no intention of being rude.
members under the cut.
seonghwa goes into full mom mode, takes care of absolutely everything, from taking you to the doctor, to buying your medicine and making sure you take it on time and that you eat and rest a lot. makes time to go and see you every day until you’re fully recovered. takes some time to help you with your laundry and dishes because he knows you like your stuff clean but you’re too tired to do it yourself, he just wants to help and make you as comfy as possible to help you recover.
hongjoong wants to help you but thinks he might not do it right so he just waits for you to ask for anything and he’ll do his best. moves his work space to your place to not fall behind work but be able to keep an eye on you and help if you ever need anything. orders your favourite food because he wants you to have warm meals but doesn’t trust his cooking abilities, literally thinks it’ll make you feel worst.
yunho really wants to help but he’s not used to it so instead he becomes your emotional support. cheers you up if he sees you’re feeling down, sings to you to help you fall asleep, cuddles with you to make sure you’re comfy and that you don’t have to make more effort than what it’s strictly needed. offer himself for everything that needs to be done because he wants to treat you like royalty until you feel better and after that.
yeosang has no idea of how to help so he goes to your place to cheer you up and keep you company. makes you tea because is the only thing he trust himself on how to cook and some fruit and snacks because he wants you well feed nevertheless. wants you to rest but also convince you to take a walk with him, only if you’re feeling well enough, if not he’ll make sure you’re comfy in bed.
san borrows you clothes because he wants you to feel comfy, reminds you to take your medicine on time. lets you rest if that’s what you want but if you’re in the mood to make something he helps you. play games? he’ll play with you. cooking something? he’ll be by your side to make sure you don’t get hurt. tired after that and in need of a nap? he’ll cuddle you to sleep, rubbing your back to help you relax and he will wake you up in time for your medicine.
mingi tries to not panic and fails. he really wants to help but isn’t sure on how to do it so he keeps you company. talks to you to distract you, caresses your hair to help you relax and sleep feeling safe and comforted in his big arms. helps in literally everything you ask for, even if it’s something he’s not sure how to do it, in that case he’ll call someone to help him help you but it’ll get done because he wants you to feel better.
wooyoung makes every single recipe he thinks can help you and makes sure you’re eating it because he thinks it’s the best way to feel better soon. aside of that, his help consist in teasing you to make you smile put your comfort show on your tv to keep you company while he’s away cooking or working, calls you if he’s away for too long and makes sure you have enough food, water and medicine. doesn’t lets you have too many snacks unless you’ve eaten.
jongho keeps you calm, ask his mom for advice and then goes to your place to help you get everything in order: your medicine and water on your bed side table, warm meals every time you ask for them. helps you clean, cook and move around your house because he says staying in bed all day will only make you feel worst, which it’s true but you’re too sick yo think of exercise. goes at night but tells you to call him if you need anything.
n/a: shorter than usual but I’m in uni finals and this is my way of take out stress.

breathe in.
breathe out.
one, two, three…
shoot.
with a small movement of his fingers, yeosang lets go of the bow string, and his arrow zips through the air with great speed. the metal arrowhead pierces right through the target’s centre.
bullseye.
the young prince lowers his wooden weapon. he stares forward, the structure of his target that sits approximately 70 meters away from his current spot staring back at him. he can see the previous targets within his peripheral vision, all of them having an arrow struck precisely in the middle of each one. they’re silent, as inanimate objects should be, but yeosang feels irritated by their mere presence.
look at you, they mock. shooting arrows again as if you haven’t mastered archery when you were a child. can’t you do anything else?
yeosang’s fingers tighten around the grip of his weapon. he’s gone mad, he thinks, after years and years of repeated training over a craft that he’s already far over the extent of being simply skilled at. archery used to be something he adored ever since he first felt the smooth surface of the wooden bow his father gifted him during his 5th birthday, telling him stories about how everyone within the royal lineage of the kang family are masters of the sport.
“this bow used to be mine,” his father smiled down at the sight of his excited son. “and now, it’s yours.”
when he shot his first arrow, even when it was nowhere near his target, he felt as if cupid’s own arrow had pierced his heart as he fell in love.
with the prince’s wide starry eyes and determined smile whenever he’s on the training grounds during his childhood, even he himself would never have guessed that he would grow to hate archery.
if he were to be more bitter and honest, yeosang thinks it’s not just the sport that he hates. he hates the grueling hours of training he has to go through each and every day, he hates the pristine white walls within the castle he resides in, he hates the amount of books he’s expected to read and memorize, he hates the lessons he has to attend every day - and god, does he hate being restricted on what he should and should not do by those who think they have any say in his own life.
a life where he never got the chance to live. truly live.
just as he’s about to place his bow down, a familiar voice calls out his name. yeosang turns around, and he’s met with the tall and buff figure of his father who stands several steps away from his own standing spot. there’s a solemn look of the king’s face, one that he wears almost all the time for as long as yeosang can remember.
“father.” yeosang greets with a quick bow.
when the king doesn’t respond, yeosang knows something is wrong.
his father approches him with long, confident strides, shoes crunching against the grass of the training grounds. the sound makes yeosang’s ears ring and his heart palpitating with anxiety. his father’s figure casts a shadow over his own once the king is standing in front of him, blocking the early morning sunlight and leaving the young prince in the dark.
a moment passes by. yeosang can feel the beating of his heart like the ticking of a bomb that’s just waiting to explode. all of the sudden, his cheek burns.
there’s a deafening ring in the prince’s ears. it takes a few seconds to finally realize that his father had just slapped him right across the face.
“you,” the king speaks, voice low and gruff. “absolute disgrace of a son. have i not told you multiple times to not sneak out of the castle?”
the bomb that was previously ticking within yeosang’s chest bursts. he stiffens, ice running in his veins as he registers the words of his father. other than his personal guard, jongho, there’s no one else who knows about the prince and his habit of sneaking out of the royal castle - and if there’s one word to describe jongho, it’s loyal. ever since he took his oath, the royal guard would never betray yeosang’s trust, even when questioned by the king.
which can only mean one thing.
“what did you do to him?” yeosang’s voice is no louder than an uneasy whisper, fearing the worse.
the silence that comes from his father only serves to feed into his fear. he can feel the king’s eyes burning fire into his skin, a flame that was once ignited with the warmth of a loving father who only wishes the best for his son - but now, the flame has gone far beyond control, searing the prince’s flesh and branding him with a reminder that he is not, and never will be, free.
“what did you do to him?” yeosang urges. there’s moisture prickling in his wavering eyes, and he’s unsure whether it’s from fearing for jongho’s safety or from the broken heart of a child.
“disobey the king’s orders will lead to consequences,” his father tilts his head up, looking down at yeosang with empty eyes. “and neither you nor that incompetent fool of a royal guard are exempted."
yeosang doesn’t need to hear anything else. the wooden bow that he was previously clutching onto is quickly thrown onto the ground, forgotten and abandoned like the fond memories he once shared with his father. the prince runs past the king without a single look back, undoubtedly making his way back into the castle to find the whereabouts of his guard. he whizzes past onlookers, servants and fellow archerers alike - some of them call out for him with worry, but the prince doesn’t spare them a glance.
not when all he can think of is jongho, jongho, jongho.
the walls of the castle echo the hurried sounds of his shoes against the floors, as if they’re mocking his misfortune. yeosang wastes no time as he quickly reaches the darker area of the castle, one that doesn’t feel the shine of the sun against it’s cold and hostile stone floors.
if his father decided to punish jongho, then there’s no other place to do so if not within the underground dungeons.
as soon as he reaches the end of the staircase that leads to the dungeons, yeosang hears it - the metallic rattles of handcuffs. it’s faint, yet it bounces everywhere against the dirtied walls, surrounding the young prince’s heart with anxiety and sinking it’s claws into his chest. yeosang follows the sound deeper into the dungeons, every step he takes bringing him away from any source of natural lighting until he reaches the end of the corridor, standing in front of the furthest cell.
once his eyes finally adjust to the poor lighting, the prince feels his knees give out at the sight before him.
jongho, his most precious friend and trusted guard, kneels in the middle of the dark and dirty prison cell, head hung low as his arms are stretched upwards in an uncomfortable form, wrists cuffed onto the chain that hangs from the ceiling. his clothes are tattered and torn, slashes that seem to have been caused by a sharp blade tearing the fabric and giving the prince a small glimpse of the dark red that oozes from jongho’s skin. he’s breathing, yeosang can only make out that much, but he doesn’t seem very… well.
the prince feels something wet on his cheeks, but he’s quick to wipe it away.
“jongho,” he whispers, fearing that if he were to speak any louder, his friend might crumble into pieces. “jongho, please answer me.”
silence.
“jongho,” yeosang grits his teeth, clutching onto the bars of the cell. “i order you to answer me right this instant, damn it!”
other than hearing the palpitation of his own heart, yeosang’s ears catch the sound of a pained groan coming from within the cell, and his knuckles turn white from the way he grips onto the metal bars as if his life depended on it.
“your highness…” jongho croaks out. “i’m sorry.”
a shaky sigh escapes the prince’s pale lips once he hears jongho speak. even if he sounds weak, at least he’s still able to talk.
“no,” yeosang breathes out. “it’s not your fault, it never was. i should have stopped sneaking out long ago…”
yeosang would rather disappear off the face of the earth than ever admit that his father is right, and he still thinks so at this very moment - but as he takes in his friend’s condition, the nagging voice in the back of his brain somehow becomes more prominent than ever.
this is your fault, it taunts him. look at him. look at what you’ve done. you almost killed the one person who cares for you, and for what? the smallest taste of freedom that you were never supposed to have?
selfish.
cursed child.
you’re going to end up just like your sister.
“your highness,” jongho calls out despite the ache in his throat. “stop it. it’s not your fault either.”
from the way yeosang turned quiet and lowered his head in something akin to shame, jongho knew that he’s spiralling again. it’s obvious to notice, he thinks, even within the dungeon’s darkness. thanks to the many years he had spent with the prince, he’s gotten used to the many quirks and habits of the young man that would be easily dismissed by those who aren’t familiar with them.
“i’m sorry.” yeosang mumbles. “i put you in danger for my own selfish wants, i don’t deserve your sympathy.”
jongho simply hums.
“you’re lucky i’m cuffed,” the guard says, earning a confused look from the prince. “or i would have smacked you for saying that.”
a faint smiles grows on jongho’s bloodied lips when he hears the quiet chuckle from his dear prince.
“you’re not in the appropriate state to be joking right now.” yeosang scolds, wiping his eyes with the sleeve of his shirt before looking around. “did my - ah, did the king do this to you?”
yeosang doesn’t feel like he would willingly call that man as his father, especially not after this occasion.
“he ordered for it, yes.” jongho breathes out. “but the one who did his dirty work was another guard.”
“did you recognize him?” yeosang questions with a furrow of his eyebrows. he can’t believe the audacity of his father being able to cruelly order the torture of his personal guard yet still refuse to get his hands dirty, even when his fingers are already dripping in the blood of others.
perhaps it’s his own sick and twisted way of showing some sympathy, since jongho has been yeosang’s guard ever since they were both young teenagers. maybe he couldn’t bear having the blood of the young man who would lay his life down for his son, whose loyalty runs deeper than the lowest underwater trench of the sea.
wherever one went, the other would follow closely, treating each other more like brothers rather than a royal and his servant.
whatever it may be, sympathy or not, yeosang still thinks it’s unacceptable.
“no,” jongho weakly shakes his head. “had his armor on, helmet and everything.”
before yeosang had the chance to curse out the cowardice of the guard who dared to harm jongho, his attention is caught by the familiar sound of jingling keys coming from inside the cell.
“lucky for me,” jongho smiles weakly. “i managed to snatch this off from the coward. i had to ruin my voice by screaming so he wouldn’t notice, though.”
the prince’s eyes travel upwards ever so slightly, and he feels a weak smile of disbelief growing on his lips when he sees the ring of silver keys dangling from jongho’s fingers.
“of course.” yeosang breathes a soft laugh out, reaching his hand into the cell to grab the keys once jongho throws it towards him, the keys falling onto the dirty floor. “of course you’d do something like that, you crazed man.”
“hey,” jongho feigns offense. “i wasn’t called ‘the best guard eridanus has ever had’ for nothing, your highness.”
as yeosang gets up on wobbly knees to unlock the prison cell’s door, he doesn’t stop the snort that escapes from his lips. the only person who has ever called jongho ‘the best guard eridanus has ever had’ was the prince himself, and he remembers the fact that he said it only because jongho bought his favourite piece of pastry during his birthday several years ago.
yeosang remembers as if it were yesterday. he had to hold back his tears when the young guard barged into his room with a small cake decorated fruit toppings. even when it was far inferior to the grand cake that his father had specially ordered for him, the one that jongho got made him happier than any gigantic cake could ever.
once the prison door clicks open, yeosang moves into the cell and quickly uncuffs his friend, catching his weak body just in time before he could fall face first onto the ground as soon as he’s set free.
“we need to get you treated,” the prince says, properly supporting jongho’s weight with his arm wrapped around the other man’s waist. “i don’t want to take care of a sick teddy bear if your wounds get infected.”
“harsh,” jongho frowns dramatically, earning himself a scoff from his prince. “and here i thought you cared for me.”
the guard winces when he feels a pinch on his side, and he sends a playful glare at the prince, who opts to look away and feign innocence. the two young men make their way out of the gloomy underground dungeon, with yeosang adjusting his own pace to match with jongho’s limps and occasional stumbles.
“...where are we going?” the guard questions as he notices the slight detour that his prince is taking. as far as he knows, the only way back up is via the staircase by the end of the dark corridor, but yeosang seems to have other plans in his head as he brings jongho through a smaller, tight-spaced hallway that they entered using a secret door that jongho never knew even existed.
which is odd. all royal guards have been taught of every secret door, passage, room, and everything alike within the castle just in case there was a need for an emergency exit or entry. however, jongho can’t seem to remember nor recognize the path that yeosang is leading him into.
“we’re sneaking out, duh,” yeosang says as a matter-of-factly. “i can’t risk bringing you to the royal physician, he’ll report us to the king and he’ll get both of us killed.”
a smile blooms on jongho’s lips. of course, even when he told himself he wouldn’t sneak out again, his prince would never stay true to those words. yeosang has always been a free-spirit who longs to explore the world outside the castle walls - to be free of duty and responsibilty, away from the sharp claws of his royal lineage that suffocates him.
during his first few weeks of becoming the prince’s personal guard, jongho had commited himself wholly to the king’s simple orders - never allow the prince to leave the castle grounds. naive and eager to please, jongho was always quick to deny yeosang’s wishes to go out and explore, but the prince was quicker. he’d find ways to sneak past his eagle eyes and sharp ears, leaving jongho frustrated and at risk of growing white hair at the ripe age of 18.
the moment jongho finally, finally, caught yeosang sneaking out, he decided to follow him. find out where he’s going, who he interacts with, memorize the specific paths he takes and the approximate amount of time he takes to get from one place to another - he was determined to squeeze out all the information he could get his hands on.
instead, he found himself in trouble when he saw the look on the prince’s face as he sat quietly on top of the tall wall that surrounds the city of eridanus with a content smile on his lips, one that gives shame to the strained and fake smile the prince always had whenever he’s within the castle. it was dark, jongho remembers, the twinkle of the night stars and the gentle glow of moonlight illuminating the prince’s face as he gazed forward.
what was he looking at? there’s nothing to admire outside the walls, only acres of forestry with rough terrains and steeps hills as well as countless bodies of water.
and yet, as the prince gazed at nothing, the guard could see everything in his eyes, even when he was spying on him from afar. yeosang never had this look on his face whenever he’s within the castle - the face of someone who wants more, someone who knows he’s destined for more. his eyes longed for everything that he itches to reach for and grab on to, in hopes it could drag him out of his miserable life as a royal who only lives to be caged.
ever since then, jongho would let yeosang sneak out as much as he wants to, even going to the extent of lying to his fellow guards about the prince’s whereabouts and allowing himself to be mercilessly beaten.
the scars are temporary, jongho thinks, mere setbacks as he does his best to make sure his dear prince will get the freedom he deserves.
if it meant that yeosang would have the stars twinkling in his eyes again, then jongho would sacrifice anything for him.

if you knew you were going to be thrown into the middle of a kingdom you’ve never been to before, all alone, you never would have agreed to that witch of a woman who calls herself yoona.
just the thought of her makes you irritated, as if you’re not already stomping your away through eridanus’ streets with the most obvious frown on your face.
“just go straight and turn left at the tavern,” you mock her voice, gripping onto the cloak that seonghwa had given you back in cygnus. “it’s the shop right by the corner, my ass.”
the moment you had woken up to the song of eridanus’ early morning birds, your peace was disturbed immediately when you bumped into yoona in the hallway of the second floor. you saw her exiting one of the rooms, which you can only guess to be the one yunho is resting in, and she’s quick to approach you even when you tried to turn away and get back into your own room.
“i need your help.” yoona had called out to you.
“good morning to you too.” you didn’t initally plan to sound far too sarcastic, but you did anyway. oh well.
“.... good morning,” the young woman replied, her eye twitching by the tone of your voice. “look, i really need your help. the other boys are still sleeping and i don’t want to wake them up.”
you sighed and gestured for her to continue.
“could you get some lavender for me? i ran out but i need it to treat yunho’s wounds.” yoona had requested, playing with the fabric of her apron that’s neatly tied around her middle.
if you were any more bitter, you would have denied and told her that you are not some kind of maid that she can simply order around. luckily for her, you’re not insufferably bitter, at least not verbally. plus, it’s for yunho, and you wouldn’t be able to live with yourself if you denied anything that could make him feel better.
so, you agreed. the innkeeper’s daughter handed you a few gold coins for the lavender’s payment and a bunch of vague instructions on how to reach the local herbalist - ones that you were quick to forget, embarrasingly so.
just because you’re some kind of chosen one that could read an ancient map does not mean you’re any better with directions than a child. it’s not even your fault, how could she expect you to know your way around the kingdom when you arrived only yesterday?
should you ask around? it seems to be the most appropriate choice, and luckily for you, there are several groups of townspeople passing by.
just pick a random stranger, you urge yourself. it’s not that hard.
your eyes scan the area for any faces that look easy to approach, but everyone seems to be on their way to go somewhere. soon enough, you spot a young man who’s leaning against a wall, seemingly doing nothing but staring at the passerbys. he’s dressed in dark colors from head to toe, his black hair slicked back with a few strands framing his sharp face and a matching set of dark eyes following the movement of the people who walk pass him. he seems to be around your age, so you suppose that he should be easier to talk to compared to the elderly townsfolk who might just scold you for wasting their time on giving you directions.
with a quick breath in and out, you make your way towards the man.
“excuse me,” you say once you’re close enough, and the man is quick to turn his head towards you. “do you know the way to the herbalist’s shop?”
the man is quiet for a second as his eyes look at you up and down. before you had the chance to feel intimidated, the man flashes you a smile.
“of course,” he speaks, and you notice that he has a bit of an accent. “i’ll walk you there. can’t have a lady like you in these streets alone.”
“ah,” you return his smile warmly. “thank you. i hope i’m not disturbing you or anything.”
the man gently kicks himself off the wall he was previously leaning against, dismissing your words with a wave of his hand.
“nah, i wasn’t up to anything. just wanted to get some fresh morning air.” he explains. the man walks pass you, and you follow him closely once he gestures you to do so with a quick tilt of his head.
“you from around here?” he asks.
“no,” you turn away in attempt to hide the fact that you’re lying through your teeth. “i’m just a travelling merchant.”
the man simply hums.
“i see,” he responds. “seems like that’s one thing in common between us - except i’m not a merchant.”
“what are you, then?” you question, deciding to turn once again to look at the man as he walks beside you.
“a humble traveler.” he says, offering no further explanation. his eyes meet yours as he tilts his head slightly just to see you, and he smiles.
you, ever so kind, smile back at the stranger. for some reason, a voice in the back of your head is telling you not to, but you ignore it.
the rest of the journey towards the herbalist shop goes on in silence. truthfully, halfway through the trip, you had begun to worry. what if this man isn’t who he says he is? he might be leading you somewhere else, taking advantage of the fact that you’re absolutely clueless about the roads in eridanus before killing you in cold blood for his own sick satisfaction.
your worries are quickly shut down once you spot the herbalist shop sign, and you let go of the breath you didn’t even realize you were holding.
it’s just baseless, meaningless worries. that’s all to it.
“here we are,” the man stops right in front of the shop. “would you like me to wait for you? just in case you don’t remember the way back.”
a soft snicker falls from your lips at the man’s words, because he’s most definitely right. you do not remember the way back.
“that would be great,” you grin. “thank you, mister…”
you drag your words a little, and the man takes the hint to tell you his name.
“christopher,” he informs. “but everyone calls me chan, so i expect you to do the same, miss…”
christopher, or chan, drags his words in a similar way you did to yours mere seconds ago, and it makes you stiffle back an entertained laugh.
“well, chan,” you speak smoothly. “you can call me byeol.”
the fake name that you came up with during your youth slides off your tongue as easy as any lie does, despite the uncomfortable nagging in your chest in the form of a palpitating heart.
“byeol,” chan repeats. “that has to be the best fitting name i’ve ever come across.”
you scoff, dismissing the cheeky smile that chan has on his lips with a wave of your hand before making your way up the small flight of stairs in front of the herbalist shop’s front porch.
you knock the wooden door thrice before entering, and the chime of a small bell rings above your head. the moment you step in, the strong scent of various herbs paired with a faint smell of burning fire overcomes your senses. the shop is lit with the natural glows of sunlight coming from the tall, open windows, and there’s a gentle breeze coming from one of them that makes some of the many, many plants within the shop sway with it’s blows.
there’s a wooden counter at the middle of the shop, but nobody stands behind it. you suppose the owner is somewhere else, maybe they’re helping another customer that came before you - either way, you’re left to figure out by yourself on where the lavender is kept within the cramped shop.
you take a few timid steps forward, the heels of your shoes clicking against the floorboards. you come to notice that there is someone else inside the shop as you catch the sight of a rather tall person by the corner of the shop. they have their back facing you, seemingly busy with browsing through the myriad of herbs, but you notice that they’re wearing a cloak, much like yourself.
in the back of your head, you can only remember one person who uses that cloak.
the person turns around just enough for you to see their side-profile, and your suspicions are correct. the sight of a familiar looking birthmark that sits prettily right under the person’s eye is a dead giveaway to the man you previously bumped into while you were on your little cafe hopping trip with wooyoung and san yesterday.
without taking a second to reconsider what you’re about to do, you approach the man with a wide grin, tapping onto his shoulder to gain his attention.
“hey there,” you greet warmly. “fancy seeing you here!”
yeosang jolts in surprise when he feels someone tapping on his shoulder, and he turns around to see a familiar face - the woman who bumped into him yesterday.
the same woman who called his birthmark pretty. despite the previous anxiety that he had felt while he was waiting for the herbalist to fix jongho up in the back of the shop, yeosang feels a smile growing on his lips.
“hi,” he grins. “what a pleasant surprise. i remember you from yesterday, dear travelling merchant.”
“ah,” you blink, a little caught off guard that the man actually remembers the event. you were beginning to prepare yourself for the incoming embarrassment if he didn’t recognize you. “you’re right, that’s me! i didn’t think you’d remember.”
“of course i remember,” yeosang chuckles. “no one else has been as clumsy as you are to bump right into a stranger.”
at the obvious tease in his words, you scrunch your face at the stranger.
“hey,” you grumble. “not my fault that you were standing in my way, you absolute tree.”
yeosang shakes his head, scoffing at your choice of words. even jongho never called him such a thing - he’ll be making a mental reminder to use it against his guard before the latter could have the chance to use it on him. although, yeosang realizes after a short second, jongho isn’t exactly a tree. if anything, that young man is a whole wall.
okay, yeosang thinks. i’ll call him wall instead.
“what are you doing here, anyway?” yeosang questions.
“oh, just here for some lavender.” you shrug your shoulders. “i’m not sure where they are, though.”
“oh,” yeosang walks pass you quickly before reaching upwards to the top of a shelf, hands plucking a few light purple stems from one of the pots. “they’re right here. here you go.”
the prince offers you the lavender stems, and you can’t stop the wide, appreciative smile that blooms on your lips as you take the herbs into your own hands. you thank him promptly, bowing a few times to further emphasize your gratefulness.
“no problem.” yeosang brushes your thanks off. “you can take your leave if you’re in a hurry, by the way. i’ll pay for your lavenders.”
just as you were about to reject the offer, you realize that yoona had given you enough coins for a maximum of three stems of lavender - and what you have in your hands now is closer to a mini bouquet. well, since he already offered…
“sure,” you agree, grinning ear to ear at the man. “i’d appreciate that, thank you so much.”
yeosang merely nods as a humble way to accept your thanks, and he waves goodbye to you as you make your way out of the shop. once you’re out of sight, the prince’s smile slowly fades away.
lavenders, he thinks. they’re for treating wounds. i hope she isn’t hurt.
you exit the shop with a happy smile, a hand full of lavenders, and a content heart. maybe today isn’t so bad.
“chan!” you call out as you skip down the stairs. “i got my lavenders, some prince looking guy paid them for me-”
just as you arrive at the bottom of the stairs, you realize that chan is nowhere to be found.
ugh, you frown, mood quickly going down again. spoke way too soon.
you could wait for the birthmark man to come out and ask him to escort you instead, you suppose, but you don’t want to keep yoona waiting. not that you’re being considerate for her, it’s more to not wanting to delay her process of making sure yunho’s wounds are properly treated and kept away from any infections.
so, with a heavy frown and an even heavier heart, you stomp away from the shop, going back to the grumpiness you had earlier and mentally preparing yourself to get lost once more.
as you walk away, you don’t notice the pair of sharp eyes following your movements.
“chan to hyunjin,” chan whispers into the communication device in his hands, hidden in the darkness of the alleyway he snuck in to. “come in, hyunjin.”
the device crackles for a few moments before the familiar voice of his most trusted assassin speaks up.
“hyunjin coming in,” the assassin responds through the device. “what’s up?”
“tell the others,” chan says, a satisfied smirk creeping onto his cold lips. “to prepare for the win we’ve been waiting for.”
there’s a brief silence by the other end of the device before the sound of excited chatter comes up.
“are you serious?” hyunjin’s voice speaks up again, and it only makes chan’s smirk grown bigger.
“you bet.” he reassures.
“i’ve got eyes on our dear little starlight.”
next.
