Title: All These Thorns

Fantasy AU

Ever since she was a little kid, Utena's only wish was to become a prince. To be the kind of hero that saves the day, who brings hope to people. That's the reason she became a knight, the goal she's been chasing since the death of her parents.

But she's also heard, ever since she was young, that she could never just "become" a prince. For starters, because she doesn't have a single drop of royal blood in her veins. Not to mention, she's a girl. Utena, of course, has never cared about any of that stuff. She will become a prince, no matter what!

Until one day, destiny seems to strike. She hears of this legend, this tale, about a princess sleeping deep inside an abandoned tower. They say the tower was once guarded by a powerful dragon, but the princess' curse is so deep and so ancient that the even the dragon died guarding its prey, its body turning to thorns.

It's obvious, then. If Utena can rescue that princess, if she can end that terrible and forgotten curse, she will be just like her prince. The kind of prince who saves princesses when they need it most. The kind of prince who breaks curses. The kind of prince who kills dragons and witches.

Things, however, are not always what they seem.

I try not to be. In the distant past I was made painfully aware of how little my company was desired in certain relationships, and I didn't have my first meaningful friend until I was like 15, so all that has impacted me up to now that I think the best sentiment anyone can have for me is tolerate me. I know this isn't true, but it's not really easy to work it through, especially without therapy, so I try to be as less clingy as possible so to not drive people away. I have no idea if it works, lmao.

Fun fact: I am slowly learning to go from "is there even any coffee left in there" to "lots of milk and/or sugar". I am learning to stomach a mocha bc grad school makes me sleepy but there is no sleep to be found 😅

OOF yeah I feel you on the exhaustion stuff. When I was super tired in undergrad I'd add a blonde shot to whatever drink I got and it had the advantage of keeping me Very Awake and the disadvantage of making me so jittery that I felt like I was on the fucking MOON and also giving me mad anxiety but the drink itself didn't taste super different so? Make of that what you will I guess??? There was also a few times where I was working multiple days in a row at my seasonal college job with maybe 3 or 4 hours of sleep so after the first day of work I'd drive to the store and get one of those canned Starbucks Tripleshots for the next day. MUCH less anxiety-inducing but that may just be bc I was constantly moving around at work and not just staying still and studying lmao. Also I will say that they did taste Very Strongly of coffee, so perhaps not the best option for you atm.

Director’s commentary on "A bright future so it seemed (but that light grew a little less bright)"?

Ohh okay this was a fun one for me because it was mostly self projecting, but I really loved this line.

“Not to mention her parents, the studying they’d make her do, the studying she insists she doesn’t need.”

I know a big thing with being a “gifted kid” can be that even though the thought process/pressure is really unhealthy, the reward starts to become protocol. You feel good at being successful and perfection is just the way it is. Things will work out, because you’re putting in the work to be perfect. People are saying, “hey, there might be all this pressure but look at the reward!! this is what you deserve!! this is all you are and all you ever need to be.” And as time goes on, it becomes normalized.

And I really wanted to add the shock factor of Claire feeling like her identity, her perfection is slipping through her hands with no warning. She shows some rebellion through the course of the show, but at the same time she’s doing the work. (She’s being pressured, but this is her deserved reward.) And when that ideal is tested through the show (and to compare the show and the fic: with studying), she’s angry. They did this to her, and she likes it now. You said, this is who I am. I did the assigned work; you gave me the assigned reward and this is not in the deal.

Until she gets her grade back, finds out she’s slipped too far. Her protocol, identity, perfection, success, has been taken. And when you remove all of the layers that everyone has stressed is the most important part of her, all you have is a failure.

i dunno if i have any for tdp (there are a couple of fanon rarepairs i'm not into, but nothing that's canon) but i guess for "Ship that is canon but you don’t ship: 💤"

probably allura/lance from voltron (horror stories i know). i didn't mind them in s3 and s4, but in s1-2 with the constant pushy flirting and s5-6 with the intense jealousy on lance's side really put me off from it, so i just could not care about them in s7/8 (nor did i fully watch either of those seasons, although for unrelated reasons)

also seahawk/mermista and catra/adora from shera. think i've talked about those two a bit on here before but they're just not my cup of tea
