Anime NYC 2019, Day Three

My first and last panel for Sunday was the joint Kodansha and Vertical panel, featuring Ben Applegate and Misaki Kido from Kodansha Comics, Tomo Tran from Vertical, and Megumi Kitahara as the Japanese guest – she’s an editor at Dessert magazine. This is the 10th anniversary of Kodansha Comics as a label.

Vertical’s announcements came first, starting with a Chi’s Sweet Home complete boxset, with the whole series in four volumes. The rest of the Vertical news was all Nisioisin. They confirmed they’re doing Zoku-Owarimonogatari in July, the “final” book in the series (yes, they are aware there are more after this). They also had the cover for Owarimonogatari 2, which surprised me as I was unaware they’d shown us the art for Owarimonogatari 1 yet. 2 features, as readers might guess, Gaen and Shinobu. (1, which I did see at the Vertical VOFAN artshow booth, has Ougi and Sodachi.)

They also announced a new Nisioisin title unrelated to Monogatari… no, not Zaregoto 4. The first in the Bishonen Series was licensed! Pretty Boy Detective Club (Bishounen Tanteidan – Kimi dake ni Hikari Kagayaku Anmokusei) is, as you can see, a mystery series with pretty boys trying to help a girl find a star that only appears once every ten years. It’s from the Kodansha Taiga label, which markets towards readers in their 20s and 30s. It has five volumes total in Japan, though, as with Zaregoto (and Monogatari at first), only the first book is announced.

We then moved on to Kodansha Comics print releases, starting with Whisper Me a Love Song (Sasayaku You ni Koi o Utau), which is a yuri manga from Comic Yuri Hime that has a bubbly girl and a reserved girl, and also involves a band. Blue Period is a seinen manga from Afternoon, from the author of She and Her Cat. A young man decides to pursue a career in the fine arts, then finds out how hard it can be.

Life Lessons with Uramachi-oniisan (Uramichi Oniisan) is from Comic POOL, Ichijinsha’s digital magazine, and is about the guy who hosts the morning calisthenics show they have in Japan and his comedic attempts to give children watching REAL life advice. It’s apparently a savage parody of children’s TV, and has an anime coming soon. Lastly (for print), Heaven’s Design Team is making the jump to the big leagues. It’s still running in Morning Two.

And now we get a monster pile of digital-only titles. To Write Your Words (Kuchiutsusu) is a 3-volume josei series from Kiss magazine about an author asked to write a racier novel than her usual, and the inspiration she gets from… a dentist? Ex-Enthusiasts: Motokare Mania is also from Kiss, and has a TV drama in Japan. A girl who broke up with her ex five years ago is startled to run into him again at the workplace.

Watari-kun’s **** is About to Collapse (Watari-kun no xx ga Houkai Sunzen) is a seinen title that started in Kadokawa’s Young Ace then moved to Kodansha’s Young Magazine. It’s an ecchi comedy with siscons and yanderes. They’re also doing the sequel to Tokyo Tarareba Girls, Tokyo Tarareba Girls Returns! Will they finally get married? Eeeeehhh…

Two series from the same author follow. Atsuko Nanba gives us To Be Next To You (Tonari no Atashi), a 10-volume series from Betsufure, and That Blue Summer (Ao Natsu) is 8 volumes from the same magazine. Both seem to be very much “standard shoujo”, but again, that does not mean it’s bad, only that it’s not revolutionary.

The big surprise for me was GE: Good Ending, a 16-volume shonen romance from Weekly Shonen Magazine, from the author of Domestic Girlfriend. If you enjoyed that one, you’ll definitely like this one, and I recall that when it was running in Japan a lot of guys were arguing about who was best girl, was the ending good, etc. MabuSasa is a shoujo manga from the Palcy online app, about a girl who discovers that a hot guy… is reading BL?

Let’s Kiss in Secret Tomorrow (Ashita, Naisho no Kiss Shiyou) is a Dessert title featuring a couple who are already dating but hide it when they enter high school… except he’s suddenly hot and she’s not getting the same attention. The Dorm of Love and Secrets (Koi to Himitsu no Gakuseiryou) is also Dessert, a 4-volume series about a commoner girl who, by circumstances, is now living in a dorm with “elites”.

I’ll Win You Over, Senpai! (Senpai! Ima Kara Kokurimasu!) is a five-volume series from Nakayoshi, has a girl who is used to love confessions going her way (because she sets them up that way) meeting her match… and finding that she can’t simply take the rejection and go away. Lastly, there’s I Fell in Love After School (Houkago, Koishita), also from Dessert, about a girl with very little presence who becomes the volleyball team’s manager and is dazzled by one of the boys.

After this Megumi Kitahara spoke about her work with Dessert magazine as an editor. Kodansha releases a lot of titles from Dessert, which caters to women from their mid-teens to mid-twenties. Most shoujo is for girls who have never fallen in love – Dessert is for girls who have already fallen in love and know the pain that can follow.

We then get a guide to the process of producing a monthly chapter, in this case the fourth chapter of Living-Room Matsunaga-san, already coming out from Kodansha Comics digitally. We see some of the original concept art and sketches, then a storyboard, the rough layout, and then the final product. She also discusses how hard it is to tell an author “this isn’t interesting”, but it is necessary to have the title succeed. Especially if, like the chapter we saw at the panel, it’s one at the end of a volume.

And that ends my Anime NYC for 2019! The con had a large number of improvements this year, particularly in regards to security and line management, and was entertaining from beginning to end. I can’t wait for 2020.

Trick or treat (yandere x reader)

(In this story you can pick whoever you want the yandere to be)

It was Halloween night and all the trick or treaters were fewer and fewer as the night went on. It had been also an hour since you last saw one, none the last you were ready just in case there were more. The half-empty candy bowl sat by the front door as you watched horror movies in your living room. During one of the more suspenseful moments, there was a knock at your door.

Looking at the clock wondering who the hell could still be out at this hour you went to the door bowl ready just in case it was just some latecomers. Opening the door there was no one there but just as you were closing the door something caught your eye. On your doorstep was a red envelope. Playing the bowl of candy down before picking the envelope. Inside was a letter with the words trick or treat written in big red letters.  

“What a lame prank.” rolling your eyes you closed the door locking it before you went back to the horror movie.

Another hour had passed when the next knock came. This time you ignored it knowing that it couldn't have been anyone looking for candy. A few minutes there was another knock and another knock until finally, it was enough to have you swing open the door ready to yell at whoever was there. oddly enough someone was standing on the sidewalk you couldn't see them too well but you could still tell that they were wearing a mask. you yelled that you were calling the cops if they didn't leave. Closing the door, you made your way upstairs to where your phone had been on the charger.  

Yet it wasn't there, searching around the nightstand and under the bed led nowhere. Maybe you left it somewhere else? Going back to the living room you froze; someone was standing just outside the window. The curtains were closed but there was a shadow cast over them.

Backing away didn't get you very far, barely registering the cloth that cloves your mouth. Fighting didn't do anything as the minutes passed, everything became darker and darker.  Once you had fallen into a deep sleep the figure picked up your limp body carrying you outside to the waiting car not even stopping to take down the scarecrow in front of the window.

After placing you in the front place they get into the car, taking off the mask they had been wearing. They took a moment to admire the treat that they had worked so hard for.

“Happy Halloween love,” they said before starting up the car and driving away.  

This was the best Halloween ever and hopefully, there would be many more to follow.

In a voice that seemed familiar yet you couldn't place it spoke

"Darling~"

You sat up in bed as the rain poured outside, breathing heavily. You looked to the side for your partner yet they were not there. Looking at your phone the time read 2:30, they had said they would be late because of work but with the storm outside made you worry for them. Decided to call them just to check in to make sure they were ok and when they would be home. The phone barely rang before they answered.

"Is everything ok? Why are you still up? You shouldn't wait for me." Was the first thing you heard them say.

" I was just worried it's storming pretty bad outside."

" Did you have another bad dream?" Lately you've been plagued by nightmares although you're not sure why.

" When are you coming home?" You asked instead of answering although that in itself was an answer.

" Not too much longer and I'll be straight home."

It grows quiet, you can hear them shuffle around on the other end. “Can you-”

“Stay on the line until you fall asleep? Of course.”

You both talked about this and that even though it was more you listening to their voice making you feel at ease until sleep overcame you once more.

“Goodnight darling, I'll be home soon.”

Ending the call, they turned the video back on. They always want to watch over you even if they weren't there so they set up a few hidden cameras in the house. It was for your safety after all even if you are more loving than in the beginning there's no need to take a chance. If it was up to them, they would be home all the time but you both need a root over your heads and food so this is a sacrifice they are willing to make to make sure you have everything you need and then some.

Standing alone in the train station wasn't what you would call the greatest of moments but you had to get home somehow and it being as late as it's the only option. It would have been better if the sun was at least up yet not watching the time will put you in the dark at some point regardless of what you do.

Looking at the time on your phone it was 11:30 they said the train should be stopping here around then. As you looked down the track to see if you could see it coming there was a sound from behind you however looking around there was no one you could see.

“Hello?”  

Nothing.

Damn train

Turning back to the tracks thinking about just walking home or just staying in a hotel for the night. Your mind starts to cloud with thoughts with surroundings not being paid attention to allow for a hand to be placed on your shoulder without you hearing it coming cursing you to let out a shriek. Quickly turning only to find an all too familiar face.

“I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you!”  

“Christ (y/p/n)! you can't just walk up to people like that!”

“I called out your name, I thought you heard me.”

After a moment of collecting yourself, they continued “what are you doing out so late anyway?”

“I could ask you the same thing.”

“I want out to get a few things.” they motioned with the hand with a shopping bag in it.

“I was just out today and lost track of time.”

“You know it's dangerous to be out late at night.”

“What about you? You're out late at night.”

“That's one of the good things about my looks, no one messes with me so I'm fine. I wished you told me you were out by yourself when it got dark-'' they took your hand in theirs. “I don't want you to get hurt.”

Nothing more was said until the train arrived after that the ride was filled with just the two of you talking. Lucky you both get off at the same stop.

“Do you have to go home right now?” you asked as you both stood outside of the station.

“Not necessarily why?” When they saw your expression, they understood why you were asking. “Do you want me to walk you home?”

“.... yes.”  

Hand in hand you walked to your house with your loving giant. However, when you got to your door you still really didn't want to part with them just yet.

“Want to spend the night? It's late and all plus your house is still pretty far.”

Their house was only a few blocks away from yours but they went along with it. they stepped inside it was a weekend anyways so there was nothing to wake up for besides no one else was there anyways. (y/p/n) went to put their bag down on the coffee table while you went to change when they felt a breeze looking up and saw that one of the windows was open. Thinking that maybe you just forgot to close it they went over closing and locking it.

Can't have anyone breaking in

The rest of the night was uneventful, nothing really happening except cuddles and tv before heading to bed.  

It had been a while since you two had spent any alone time together. So, it was nice just being around each other without anyone else.

You were right

During the night you woke up feeling something warm. Looking on your hands in the pale light there was a dark liquid with a strange small that filled the room

“(y/p/n)? Did you spill something?” looking over they had their back towards you. “(y/p/n)?” tugging on their arm you rolled them onto their back. There was the same dark substance all over them.

“(y/p/n)? (y/p/n)!?” you tried turning on your light but it won't turn on. You start to panic, shaking them to try getting them to do anything but lay there.  

That's when you heard laughing.

Looking at the end of the bed there was someone standing there.

“Who the hell are you?!”

“You'll learn soon my darling~”

The voice sounded familiar but that wasn't the priority at the moment you tried to move out of the bed. However, they were faster on top of you in an instant. The last thing you know was a needle in your neck before everything went dark with the person saying one last thing.

A Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?

He is extremely affectionate with words and action, given it can feel smothering at times but he does try and give you space (you do have your own room in the house after all.)

B Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

Love can get messy sometimes but it's no worry because in the end it will all be worth it.

C Cruelty : How would they treat their darling  

Like royalty, always making sure you're comfortable and safe so he always keeps a close eye on you.

D Delusional : How aware are they?

He is as delusional as they came, being one of the most delusional ones.

E Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

He will bare his heart and soul to you. It's not good to keep secrets from your lover after all. (He does hope that you will be as vulnerable to him as he is to you not like you could hide much anyways.)

F Fight : How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Sad, not totally understanding why. Maybe you had a bad day? Just frustrated? Whatever it is that's bothering he will find out and fix it if it means you'll be happy again. (of course, not seeing the most obvious answer doesn't help.)

H Hell : What would be their darling’s worst experience?

Depending on how he handles the others (other designers) finding your co-workers dead with the one that did it covered in their blood can ruin anyone's day.

I Ideals : What is their plan for the future?

simple, having you happily by his side. Given he won't mind a few add Ons but as long as you're there he's happy.

J Jealousy : How jealous are they when it comes to their darling?

It's mostly a mix of sadness and jealousy although he can get fairly jealousy. Sad because he thinks that they may take you away so it really depends on how long you're gone or how ‘friendly’ they are.

K Knowledgeable : How much would they try to learn about their darling?

He doesn't want to miss anything no matter how small it may seem.

L Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?

At first, he will use words (like complaining about your work and things of this nature.) then he will move on to giving you flowers or other little things you may like. Trying to get as close to you as possible without seeming like a creep.

M Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

He acts sweeter, protective towards you but other than that he is the same.

N Naughty: How would they punish their darling?

No punishment, only smoother. Even if you try to escape, he will find some excuse (other than the real reason) or try and persuade you into calming down or staying.

O Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?

Freedom and privacy like said before he is very protective meaning, he will keep a close eye. Another reason is because he just doesn't like it when you're too far out of reach.

P Patience: How patient are they with their darling?

He is very patient, never getting annoyed or frustrated and letting you take your time either with a task or you warming up to everything.  

Q Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

No, because for him you are his soulmate, his one and only, there will never be another. If you leave and he can't get you back or can't find you he will go into a state of deep sadness hoping that you will return and wondering why you left. Maybe I wasn't sweet enough? Maybe I didn't listen enough?

R Regret : Would they feel guilty? Would they let go?

Only if you were hurt or he sees that he scared you then he would do everything in his power to make you feel better.

S Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc.)?

Love can make people do crazy things that along with wanting to be the perfect partner for you is a mix that (even if he doesn't realize it) brought this side out.

T Tears : How do they feel about their darling crying, screaming, and/or throwing a tantrum?

Crying is dealt with smoothing, coos and kisses. Tantrums on the other hand are dealt with by watching to make sure you don't hurt yourself and when you're tired, he’ll hold you close along with more coos and kisses.

U Unique : Does anything make them different from the classic yandere?

Besides the fact that he is one of the most delusional ones as well as one of the more protective and being a sweeter one. All those could make him different from others. that and the fact that along with all three he can or will kill. (a lot of the time you can have one or the other or at least less but he has all four which are different than most.)

V Vice: What weakness can their darling exploit in order to escape?

His trust (terrible I know) he does trust you he just wants to keep you safe which is the reason for all the locks (that and maybe a subconscious understanding that you may not want to be here.) so if you use this saying that you’ll step outside (and he doesn't need to come with you) although it will take some time, he will let you. So, if you manage to get a fair distance you should be fine. (Just remember he will come looking not too long after.)

W Wit’s end: Would they ever hurt their darling?

Never ever, he wants to protect you not hurt you (even by accident it would be rare considering he treats you as if you were made of glass most of the time.)  

X Xoanon : How much would they worship their darling?

Like his everything (which you are.) although it's not worshipping the ground you walk on levels but it's still high to the point, he doesn't see anything you do as wrong (even if it is like trying to hurt him or actually hurting him.)

Y Yearn: How long do they pine after their darling before they snap?

Quite a while, but if you were to get hurt at some point or if he sees that you are very unhappy then he will take it upon himself to make you happy and or take you away to keep you safe.

Z Zeal : How passionate would they be? Would they be passionate enough to break their darling?

He is very loving and can act like a mother hen but none of those things would break you. Honestly this may be the one yandere that won't break you.

Yandere Profiles:  Unabara/Neptune

Meeting:

A classic office romance, maybe you were a new hire shadowing the design to get a feel for what it's like or maybe you yourself was his mentor (someone he had shadowed at one point.) perhaps you've just a co-worker that was moved to the department.  no matter how it happens you both meet and for him it was love at first sight, a feeling he will never forget and as time went on it only grew.

Stalking/After Meeting:

He has to keep an eye on you! It can be dangerous after all with all the new animals you never know what's going to happen plus the places to observe can be just as treacherous. He hates to see you upset in any way (whether it's about a new design you are having trouble with or just had a bad day.) so he tries to be extra sweet with you, which at times could come off to be a bit… much especially when he gives you your favorite sweet or snack (you don't remember telling him what it was… maybe he saw you with it one day and thought you liked it?)

Kidnapping:

It's not kidnapping if he's bringing you where you belong. He’ll make sure everything is soft, warm and homely before bringing you home. He'll understand if you don't want to share a room (or even a bed.) right away but it does get lonely even if you're just in the next room. It will be a surprise so you'll never see it coming until you wake up.

Punishments:

Why would he punish you? It's just that you've been having a bad day is all he's sure it will blow over in time although that may be different for the other versions.

Relationship:

Sugar, spice and everything nice that is the relationship so there may be a rough patch here and there but what couple doesn't have them? Besides, they can be fixed easily. (Nothing a few more locks won't fix.)

Random headcanons:

He loves affection (both giving and receiving.) It may be a bit shy at first but after a while he can barely keep his hands (and lips.) off of you. (Respectfully of course nothing you don't like. His hands will not roam anywhere that is unwanted.)  

He is very strong so getting out of his arms is near impossible. He will be careful not to crush you by accident.

Uses a lot of cutesy nicknames no matter the situation, he could be spurred by dead bodies or when he gets caught begging for you to understand that he did it all for you.

He is very protective which could lead to him babying you quite a bit. It's only because he wants to take care of you the best way he knows how.

You can truly do no wrong in his eyes no matter how you treat him he will always see you as the love of his life.

Going back to being caught there is a chance that the delusion will break even if for a moment and he will realize what he has done. It will not last long before the delusion will come back full force but for a moment, he realized what he did to his friends and you and that in itself will be enough to break him.

When it comes to deciding things he's pretty much going to go with the flow (like if you want kids then he will give you as many as you want but if you don't want any then he will not push it as well as things similar to this.)

This being said, he is not a pushover; however, you can get some leeway with certain things if you play your cards right (except leaving of course.)

Him actually killing is 50/50 depending on what the situation is. If he feels like someone is taking you away, he will panic and act. He will also do it as a form of showing you just how much he loves you or protecting you. 

It is fairly rare for you to see him panic or act crazy in anyway normally he's very calm cool and collect (than again he isn't afraid to show emotions) so when he doses snap and show one of those two sides it will send a shiver up your spine for sure  

When you do finally let him sleep near you, he will want to be touching you in some way whether it be holding hands or having his arms wrapped around you. He just wants to be as close to you as possible.

AU:

Prince/king:

As a king he has many resources at his disposal that he is willing to use given the situation that is at hand. If you are another royal then he will suggest a marriage that will help both your kingdoms (even if at the time your kingdom has no problems it will not stay that way for long.) or he will go the charming route with his kind nature it won't be that hard. If you are a villager then he can simply have you work in the castle (if you don't already.) and have you stay by his side. Again, marriage isn't off the table for who doesn't want to marry a royal as kind as he?

Mafia:  

He's a bit more reserved but around you he always has a small smile.  Maybe you're another mob boss like him, perhaps you've both been fighting for years and when he finally wins (and he always does) he will take what he's wanted for so long. Maybe you're just another lackey who's just following orders and just gets in over your head, being dragged to his feet by his man and decides to keep you for one reason or another. Maybe you were just a normal person who saw too much and needed to hide away. No matter how you meet it will always be the same ending with you getting stuck with him rather you liked it or not.

God:

Being able to control water has its perks, if he wanted to, he could draw back the sea making it harder to fish or get any water of course he is not that cruel (but he will keep it in mind doing whatever he wants with the sea and freshwater.) Perhaps you were looking for a way to help your people in their time of need or they needed a sacrifice to please the gods and you happen to be the one or even just a visitor to his temple. Either he most likely already has been keeping an eye on you so if you were meant to be a sacrifice, he would take you but punish the people for hurting you or if you need help then he would do it but for a price.

Demon:

He can be sweeter than most demons at times but don't let this fool you he will still tease and fluster until you're not too sure what's happening anymore. Maybe it was the classic messing with a Ouija board or some kind of ritual that or he was just bored, a sacrifice, even just a lost angel but by any chance you've now caught his eye and once he has you, he will keep you in your own special room, one that only he can go into and out of. not only keeping you safe but reminds you that he has control of what happens next which as you come to learn could be anything.

Fantasy:  

As a simple shopkeeper he can blend in nicely making it hard for anyone to believe he took a hero for himself. You didn't think he could do anything like this which made it much easier, his job was to help the hero and that is what he did. Of course, the table can be flap to where he's the hero helping whoever needs it making it the classic hero saving a royal or another hero or even a villager either way is his job to protect and that's exactly what he is going to do.

Future:

He just wants you and your love, that's all he needs. Like I said before, for the most part he will go with the flow letting whatever you want happen (unless it's away from him of course.) Sure, there may be some ups and downs (what couple doesn't) as long as he has you, he's happy.

Yandere team ups: Unabara/Neptune & Asahi Azumane

They are both not only one of the most delusional yanderes but also one of the sweetest one.

Because of their high delusion it makes them very dangerous willing to do anything for their darling.

Constantly having their delusions feed into each other also making them mad.

Because of this over time it will become harder and harder for them to hide behind a mask even if it is sewn in.

Until everything is mixed together making it also impossible for them to see what reality and what their actions caused vs what they think they are doing and the end result.

With this pair they can make you go mad with everything they are doing and you having a front row seat to the madness that is their love.

They really do only want the best for you but with the rose-tinted glasses turning a deeper shade of red with each passing day they may end up doing things even worse than if they were alone.

They will however treat you like if you were made of the finest glass or at least try. (Depending on how bad the state they are in.)

In the end there is a high chance that all three of you will turn mad in a spiraling all-consuming love that no one can escape from….at least not one that will end happily ever after.

Delusionally in love

Both are HIGHLY delusional as well as extremely sweet.

This being said it is to a very suffocating but everything time you say something about it (trying to get them to back off) they give you such a sad puppy that you relet and let him do as they please. (Because can you really say no to those faces?)

They follow you around the department like lost puppies who want nothing more than your attention.

Both always ready to turn the department upside down for you.  

They are always ready and willing to do whatever you say (except when you asked them to leave you alone.)

Both have heavy rose-tinted glasses so no matter how you act with them (or even people around you) they only see the good in you.

Both have a strange understanding/ trust with each other so it will actually be nearly impossible to turn them against each other.

They care for you deeply so they both tend to act like mother hens worry also about every little thing. Don't go too far, don't want you to get lost now do we? Careful we don't know how it will react.  

That said they are VERY protective of you to the point where you're hardly ever out of their sight.

In the end they really are sweet boys and just want the best for you even if at times you feel like you can't breathe with them around.
