A week into our WWOOF journey at a breathtaking and abundantly, educationally experiential working opportunity here at a horse farm south of Nashua, NH right over the Mass border. I've been learning #wildcrafting, getting better and clever in the kitchen, working with these amazing animal companions again, which is so in of itself valuable and reaffirming work. The labor is difficult at times yet rewarding. The Turkeys. The older, larger Turkey is a female that adopted the three poults when they were younger. They each are from different females and for a while they closely followed their moms around the farm not spending much time together. They were each left to fend for themselves and the three females who left them went on to get broody again, lay more eggs with plans of starting over. Another female took the young turkeys in so to speak, they began following her and still do. In the video they are near the heap vines eating the seeds off the tops of tall grass. The last week of May

I hate when May is winding down; it is my favorite month by a long shot. (sure will be glad when online schooling is done, tho)

My goal for this morning was to take a shovel out to the little drainage in the middle of the pasture and dig out around the pipe a bit. It has silted up over the years, and needed a little bit of maintenance before the next heavy rains. Of course, Nutmeg and Hero got their breakfast first. Every morning since we got Hero 2.5 years ago I’ve gone out to feed him, said, “Good morning, Hero!” and then started humming I Need a Hero to myself. I’m quite sick of it, but cannot stop. Nutmeg should be starting to show her pregnancy pretty well by now if her trip to see the buck actually resulted in pregnancy; it doesn’t look to me like it did. That’s a shame, I was looking forward to having milk.

It didn’t take too long to dig out above and below the pipe a little bit. I could use a few big rocks to reinforce the bank a little bit. There are areas upstream from here that got flood damaged years ago. When I carefully set some large-to-very-large rocks in place it has held the bank steady ever since. I love simple projects with rocks and hand tools. Just my cup of tea. Didn’t meet any snakes this morning, just one disgruntled frog.
