The groundbreaking vaccine aims to limit the damage to bee colonies caused by foulbrood. The disease, for which there is currently no cure, develops from the bacterium Paenibacillus larvae, which can weaken and destroy colonies. It is the most severe, problematic and challenging of all the diseases that may affect a colony. In some areas of the US, the disease has affected one in four hives. Beekeepers are forced to dismantle and burn any infected colonies and use antibiotics to limit the spread. There are millions of beehives all over the world, and they don’t have a good health care system compared to other animals. Now, a pioneering vaccine hopes to quell the disastrous effects of foulbrood disease. Before you start imagining a tiny syringe being inserted into a bee (which is exactly what I imagined for the illustration), the vaccine which contains dead versions of Paenibacillus larvae, the bacterium that causes American foulbrood — comes in the form of food. The vaccine is incorporated into royal jelly, a sugar feed given to queen bees. Once they ingest it, the vaccine is then deposited in their ovaries, giving developing larvae immunity as they hatch. “Our vaccine is a breakthrough in protecting honeybees,” said Annette Kleiser, chief executive of Dalan Animal Health. “We are ready to change how we care for insects on a global scale.” Source: New York Times (link in bio) #bee #savethebees #science https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp0AwuBrANe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Creating a buzzworthy haven for our pollinator pals 🐝🌼 Provide Nesting Sites: Many native bee species are solitary, and they nest in the ground, hollow stems, or other small cavities. Leave some areas of your garden with undisturbed soil or create nesting structures, such as bee hotels, to support these bees.

Long time no post! How is everyone??? I moved!
The bees are *mostly* alright based on my most recent “checkup” and I’m only down one and a half colonies that I knew were already weak. One of them I suspect was taken out due to a leak in the lid that made the wood damp and less insulating. They must have left very early in the season because the bottom of the hive was FULL of wax moth cocoons and eggs and cockroach poop and all kinds of nastiness. I scraped it out and didn’t see any sign of lasting mold on the wood though so it mustn’t have been too damp.

The other four langs are doing just dandy as well. All have enough bees in them to show activity at 50f and overcast so they’re apparently healthy. Already bringing in pollen too!

The super hive seems to be doing incredibly well also! They have propolized up the front of the hive in what I can only presume is an effort to manage air flow and the openness of the entrance. Since I seldom ever check the front 10 frames I suppose that’s alright, though if they are to abscond it will be a chore to get those frames out.

As mentioned, I did move! The bees are still at my old bee yard, but my new place has a nice open yard that I can put them in so I’ll be moving them soon hopefully. I’m setting up bee benches according to a guide I found on YouTube that is all metal and can be adjusted/moved as necessary, because the yard is unlevel everywhere. I tested several positions on each side with my full weight and they seem to hold up quite well. Though I think I may need to adjust some of them because I may have overdone the forward slope a bit. You can really see how uneven the yard is, since the benches are level.

Lance leaf Buckthorn,
Rhamnus lanceolata
Bring this plant back, make it common, make it known for fall interest, make it known for it’s benefits and scale and structure.
A show stopper, an under utilized native that can thrive in rocky conditions and specifically does well in alkaline hillsides, at one point Cincinnati Ohio was known for having this species in such high abundance that it was considered a weed species. I wish that was still the case, now Cincinnati is honey suckle and other suitable habitat is invasive buckthorn, privot, and autumn olive. This is a critical nectar species during transition from spring to summer, a bee and wasp magnet. Here we see it in alkaline uplifted marl and till located along risen sections of the black ash white cedar swamp woodland of cedar bog(a fen).
This species was also an incredible thicket island species critical to prairies and I never see it in restoration or recreation plots.

Project Honey Bee x Discworld Happened!
I am thrilled to no end that my husband adopted a honey bee queen for me for Christmas, which lucky me includes some adorable jewelry (I don't even wear gold metals but these are too cute NOT to).
And having a queen bee - you know who it must be named for.
Say hello to Granny Weatherwax. She and her hive are in New York apparently. Hopefully it's not too much a disappointment that it's not somewhere in the Ramtops.

💚 #Naturgarten #mygarden #savethebees #WildblumenStattRasen

Happy World Honey Bee Day 2023!
Tumblr media
Happy World Honey Bee Day 2023 (May 20th)! Save and support these wonderful animals, they work hard for our planet :)
World Bee Day has been celebrated on 20 May since 2018. On this day in 1734, Anton Janša was born and is considered a pioneer of modern beekeeping. The commemoration day was proposed by Slovenia within the United Nations Organisation and adopted on 20 December 2017. In 2019, 15 official events were held across three continents. An International Round Table was held in Rome.
The aim of World Bee Day is to highlight the immense importance of bees to a broad public. Due to their indispensable pollination service, they promote biological biodiversity and food security for humans, but also for animals. Furthermore, this commemorative day is intended to draw attention to the sharp decline in the bee population and the need to protect these insects.
Bees are known for their role in pollination and honey bees are also known for the production of honey and other bee products. Besides the honey bee, there are about 30,000 species of wild bees worldwide. Of these, 548, a good 550, or even 574 species live in Germany, depending on experts, year of publication and species concept used, of which almost half are considered threatened.
