Thanks to our @whitemountainapiary friends! #Repost @whitemountainapiary ・・・ TODAY is the Feast Day of St. Gobnait, Irish patron Saint of BeeKeepers. She was born in County Clare in the 5th or 6th Century, & is said to have been the sister of Saint Abban. She fled a family feud, taking refuge in the Aran Islands. Here an angel appeared & told her that this was “not the place of her resurrection” & that she should look for a place where she would find nine white deer grazing. She found the deer at the place now known as St. Gobnet’s Wood. Celtic lore held bees in high esteem, believing the soul left the body as a bee or a butterfly. Gobnait is said to have added beekeeping to her life’s work, developing a lifelong affinity with them. She started a religious order & dedicated her days to helping the sick. She used honey as a healing aid. She is credited with saving the people at Ballyvourney from the plague. One story tells of how she drove off a brigand by sending a swarm of bees after him and making him restore the cattle he had stolen. St Gobnait’s well is situated to the North of Ballyagran. Today @honeybeecentrekids is learning and sharing about Dr. George Washington Carver (1860s - January 5, 1943) who was an American agricultural scientist, inventor and university professor who promoted alternate crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion. He developed techniques to improve the soil quality because he wanted poor farmers to have the ability to grow food crops and improve their quality of life. There are many interesting facts about Carver and I would encourage you to read all about him. Things like, he considered weeds “nature’s vegetables” and he put people before money. Did you know that Dr. George Washington Carver was also a beekeeper? While teaching at Tuskegee Normal, now known as Tuskegee University, every student had to learn beekeeping as part of their curriculum. How cool is that!? Throwback Thursday 2019 in our Christmas hive with sweet worker bee Bair filling Honey On Tap gift orders. Twas was our last holiday season before the pandemic hit and we were forced to close the brick n’ mortar location in Harvard Square. Flash forward. Whilst we were saddened to do so, like the bees, it was healthy and necessary to swarm to a new home, in order not merely to survive, but to thrive. The YLAI Fellowship brings together 280 young business and social entrepreneurs and empowers them to advance their entrepreneurial initiatives and strengthen economic and social development in their home communities and across the region.
