hello hello, and welcome to my writeblr, aka the place i'll be using to help develop and share content about my wips and writing! i have, admittedly, created this blog on a whim, but i'm hoping i'll be able to make something fun out of it, so feel free to stick around if any of my posts or wips grab you!

my name's moriah (or mor, if you prefer), and i'm an 18-year-old writer from the united states! i love rock music, vampires, and the color red, among about a hundred other things! i'm also a huge movie fan on top of being a reader, and a good 90% of my inspiration comes from the movies and tv shows i enjoy (the other 10% comes from whatever music gets stuck in my head at the time). feel free to dm me whenever, i love to chat!

⋆ i used to write exclusively fantasy and sci fi, but now i've begun branching out into the genres of "whatever the hell i feel like," and so far, it's been very fun!

⋆ most (if not all) of my writing is adult or, at the very least, geared towards a mature audience—i'm not a biggest fan of the book rating system, so i just like to say that all of my wips would fall under an "r" rating if they were movies.

⋆ i almost have to physically restrain myself from adding vampires or vampire-adjacent creatures to every single fantasy wip i create, oops!

⋆ expect lots of bisexual main characters, because if i can't find the representation i want somewhere else, i'm sure as hell gonna write it myself!

Even Forever Takes Breaks

A/N: Thank you to @sugar-phoenix for editing this. She's so good at it omg. Also to @wipsbymor for convincing me to post this LOLL. I don't know how canon this is ngl. Right now I'm just writing short stories to get a feel for the WIP.

I haven’t seen Grimoire in five days. 

I wish I could say that I was happy about it, yet there’s a lack of giddiness in my chest. Instead of popping champagne and cheering, I find myself waiting for him to come back.

I don’t miss his company. This much I am sure of. It’s just that when a parasite settles within you for so long, it’s odd to be without it. I can’t feel eyes on me when I should be alone. There’s none of his idiotic commentary. It’s been nearly a week since I’ve heard one of his gorey promises. I know he’s coming back. Just as the rooster knows when to sing its call, just as the moon knows when to come out and when to go to sleep, just as the seasons pass, Grimoire will be back. 

The clock ticks in the corner, and I try my best not to stare at it.

I go to my advisory meetings as if nothing is wrong. I can tell my advisors notice Grimoire’s absence, but my eyes are too sharp for them to ask questions. They bow just as deeply even without Grimoire glaring at them from over my shoulder.

“Queen Sabelina, the people have faith in your might and have requested that you defend them from the neighboring country,” Horus, one of my least favorite advisors, says. He stands to reach over the map resting on the long table. “The kingdom appears to have this small providence surrounded. I am happy that they have sought you out, but it’d be near fruitless to try to help them. We would lose money and men—”

“Lord Horus, what house do you belong to?” I interrupt. Horus goes still, and I can see his mouth slightly twitch downwards.

“The House of Griffin. We have served the thrones for centuries.”

I try not to roll my eyes. Being loyal to the throne does little to comfort me. I am not centuries old. I know some question my claim to the throne. Someone loyal to the throne might even betray me.

“Yes, and when your house nearly fell to ruin a century ago, did my forefather abandon you? Did he not come to your aid?”

I watch as denials run to the tip of his tongue. I’m sure he hates being compared to commoners. “He did, Your Majesty.”

“Good,” I say, standing. “I was afraid for a moment you had forgotten. This kingdom refers to me as their Blood Queen, and what use is a queen drenched in blood if it is not the blood of her enemies? An attack on any part of my country is a personal attack against me, and should be taken as a personal attack to everyone in this room.”

“Say we lose this town.” I look at the map. “Whithallow. Who is to say our enemies will stop here?”

My advisors stare up at me, and I do not let down my gaze. For a moment, I think that they will disagree with me. All of their familiars are close to their person, stored in their brooches, yet mine is empty. They could easily kill me. I’m sure Horus wants to.

Lorin speaks up. “Perhaps we are just unused to seeing a monarch so enthused about protecting their people.”

I narrow my eyes. “Well I’m here now.”

Another advisor I haven’t bothered to remember the name of speaks up. “Surely though, Your Majesty, you do not view your men as so disposable? The houses have been doing the work of the throne for longer than the history books can accurately scribe.”

“The houses are important,” I agree, sweeping my gaze over them, “but they are just one part of the kingdom. A very powerful part, but still very small. Am I to reject all my subject’s care to coddle you with golds and silvers?”

“Of course not—”

“Then we answer my people’s call and tell them we are on our way. Meeting adjourned.”

They leave wordlessly, and I slump back into my chair. I see it now: I am a fool in their eyes. They bow their heads because of my claim to power, but just as I yanked the throne any one of them could as well. Without Grimoire, there is no Blood Queen, just Sabelina.

I curl into bed defeated and cold and close my eyes so I can pretend I’ll get any sleep tonight. Before I can spiral too much, the bed dips, and I sit up quickly.

It’s him. There’s tears in his eyes as he leans closer to me, and I allow him to embrace me in a tight hug.

“Please, do not make me leave you for any longer,” he says, face buried into my neck. “There is no moon without your presence. No stars, no gravity, no reason for me to go on. Scorn me as much as you like it. I welcome your anger, just do not make me leave you.”

“I’m surprised you listened.”

“You commanded it. Due to our bond I had to.”

Oh. I feel stupid now. With as powerful as Grimoire is, it is easy to forget that he is my familiar.

“You… may come back.” He doesn’t move. “I have to sleep, Grim. Get off.”

Grimoire shifts to his side. His arms go stiff to his side. I want to turn away, to look away, but I am so stunned by the fact that he’s truly back at my side.

“Tomorrow I will schedule a meeting with my advisor to discuss some battle plans.” I pause, suddenly embarrassed. “Perhaps you could scare them. Just a little.”

He jerks his head. “Anything you wish, my love.”

For once, as I close my eyes to sleep, Grimoire’s intense stare does not unnerve me. 

I did not miss him, I tell myself. I think it, so it must be true.

The world she exists in is one where humans and elves are not really all that friendly, and as a halfling she works for the elves to spy on humans. Due to the dangerous work she does and elves general disregard for their halfling citizens, Cass living to 47 is quite remarkable. She has a complicated relationship with her technically-adopted-but-it-doesn't-feel-like-it son Cyrus that isn't quite akin to parent and child.

genre: new adult. high fantasy.

tw: violence, misogyny, forced/child marriage, murder, major character death, incest.

But the concept of pure birthright seemed to dwindle as more moons arrived and fled since the Golden Age. Illegitimacy festered in the swells of Adilistan and the houses grew restless. Gone were the days of prideful founders and come were the days of unsatisfied descendants who itched and yearned for more. The validity of the Goddess and mortal’s union was a greatly disputed matter, and factions rose that rejected the Faith, and the throne with it.

A Noon upon the throne was no longer a sign of stability for the realm, rather a mockery of those who kept it alight with no reward. Crimson rivulets trickled into Adilistan, carrying with them whispers of illegitimacy and caucuses that disputed behind closed doors the claims and rights of House Noon.

Sabah Noon: Princess of Adilistan and rightful heir after the murder of her older sister at the hands of her uncle. Flees the palace with her mother’s handmaiden.

Rayan Lahari: known as ‘the runaway heir’. Fled his family and life after witnessing the cruel realities of power and how it changes people. Now lives a life of crime by stealing to help provide for his people.

Kiran: handmaiden to the Queen. Companion to the King. Tasked with aiding Sabah in her fight for the throne.

Fatimah Noon: Princess of Adilistan and older sister to Sabah. Assassinated by orders of her uncle, who usurps the throne after her and her father’s deaths.

Junaid Noon: King of Adilistan. Assassinated by his brother in law.

Bandagi Laal: Queen Consort of Adilistan. Taken captive by her brother upon the deaths of her husband and daughter.

Waqas Laal: brother to the Queen. Son is married to Princess Fatimah Noon. Plots the murder of his son’s wife and his own brother in law. Installs his son upon the throne.

Zayn Laal: husband to Princess Fatimah Noon. Made King after her and the King’s deaths.

Hi there! Its Week 1 of the Sunday Writeblr Ask-A-Thon! I'm Athena, my question for you is: What's writing to you? What does it mean to you, what inspires you, who inspires you?

(it is still Saturday for me but I do not care!)

Writing is a passion to me, something for me to let my creativity (and stress) free. If it happens to be HS journalism, writing stories here or poems. It is a passion I will love to the end of time as it allows me to explore the inner and deeper thoughts of myself to create people that I will adore and let others adore.

At 5:40AM last week you were the only one awake in your house because you hadn’t gone to bed yet. Through the curtains you saw someone at the door, they stood there for five minutes. At 5:46 you opened the door. Benjy had a bag over his shoulder, he was holding another one in one hand, and the sky behind him was stormy. The house was dark with it.

Adam laughed, though it was little more than an exhale of breath. She whimpered like a cat again and he tried not to think about what made him soothe his thumb on her ribs. He shushed her and Piedad half-heartedly kicked him with the thick rubber sole of her combat boot.

His mother had commissioned a haunted painting of her two children, glossy like porcelain toys, the daughter trapped in a frilly dress and son pinned into an ironed shirt, eternally somewhere between the ages of twelve and six. They had those blue eyes, the blue of dead animals, so wide and round it looked like it hurt.

Wouldn’t watch the look on Isaac’s—her Isaac, not the dream’s Isaac—face when he realised she knew, always knew, that he was doomed. That he was never any greater hero. That fatal flaws exist outside of tragedy, that they take down men in real life like they do in the plays.

i realized i've talked about this wip on here before, but i haven't actually made any sort of intro to it before now? so that's what this is! the plot is extremely bare bones right now so there's not a lot of detail to get into there but i still wanted to share because i've been thinking a lot about this story recently, so here it is!

𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 ⋆｡°✩

genres: weird western, supernatural, romance

target length: novel

setting: fantasy frontier called tallakeen, a place widely known as the land "where the dead don't stay that way"

rating + content warnings: like most of my other works, "adriana & the undead" is intended for mature/adult audiences. content warnings include graphic violence, gore, cannibalism, zombie-related horror, death, parricide, references to mariticide, sexual content, language, hallucinations, and likely others that i'm either not remembering or will think of in the future.

summary: after achieving immortality in order to escape the results of the famous bite of the tallakeeno undead, ranch hand adriana montero is left a dead woman walking, and what seems at first to be her savior quickly becomes her condemnation. now stuck in the centuries-long cycle of eternal life, the only interest in her stagnant existence is her rivalry with death himself—or, the marshal, as she calls him. that is, until a charming, yet somehow repulsive stranger approaches her at the saloon with a perplexing proposition, one that sets her on a quest for the key to mortality with death at her side.

adriana montero — the immortal

⋆ main character ⋆ she/her ⋆ former ranch hand, now a loan ranger who roams tallakeen ⋆ very reckless, does dangerous things for the sake of it because there will never be any real consequences for her ⋆ sees and experiences things that aren't real from time to time as a result of the wound that should have killed her, can come off as detached from reality at times

the marshal — death

⋆ love interest to adriana ⋆ he/him ⋆ supernatural entity with the task of taking dead souls to the afterlife ⋆ cannot actually enter the afterlife, meaning he is perpetually stuck between the world of the living and the world of the dead ⋆ kind and gentle by nature, but he and adriana antagonize each other so intensely that he can seem downright cruel and malicious at times

vince cooley — the villain

⋆ main antagonist ⋆ he/him ⋆ the only other immortal adriana has ever encountered ⋆ quoted in my notes as being a "hot, sexy scumbag" ⋆ has a very attractive and charming persona, but is really just a cruel, entirely self-serving person beneath his sugarcoated and suave facade

lucy cannon — the outlaw

⋆ secondary antagonist ⋆ she/her ⋆ outlaw and bandit with a proficiency with firearms ⋆ allies and has a troublesome and perplexing temporary relationship with vince—she reminds him of someone from his past, and they are both using each other as means to an end, just with a little more than they bargained for on the side

1. What motivates you to write?

The plot threads I have later down the line in my wips and my characters. Both of these points are really the same. I am excited about the things I have planned because they highlight the characters, and I am excited because my characters for the things I have planned.

2. A line/short snippet of your writing that you are most proud/happy of. If not maybe share a line of someone else's work you love (just please credit them)

I have to pick just one????? Oh lord.

Undead things aren't supposed to grieve other undead things, and yet so many vampires were now without fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters.

3. Which OC makes you smile every time you think/talk about them and what are they like?

@mouseinthegreenhouse's Maximilian. They have to put up with my simping sm HIOEWHOIW. It's hard to describe Max in a way that does not boil down his character. He just has this presence that you feel in every page, this captivation. A slow, measured way of speaking where he knows no one would dare interrupt him. Love him to bits.

4. What process of writing do you enjoy the most?

I haven't really gotten to the editing phase with any of my OG works, so I guess I have to say drafting?

5. What part of writing do you think you are the best at? (Yes stroke your own ego it's okay)

Character. I try my best to write characters that are analysis worthy. That have a deeper meaning in their existence and that have a lot to say about the world. Of course not all of my characters are as well thought out as others, but when I do put my all into it there is so many intricacies that go into them.

6. What is something in the writeblr community is most enjoyable?

THE PEOPLE. I LOVE YOU GUYSS. I love seeing your works and hearing your feedback and the tags and the asks. And the mutuals. The mutuals. Getting to know other writers and getting to talk about writing more deeply with them is so much fun.

7. A writing tool/device you use that helps you with writing? (It could be speech to text, a writing program etc)

I use WPS Offcie for my more serious projects. It's like Word, but free, and also not owned by Microsoft. This helps me not write in the middle of the night on Daycycle and work on it healthily. It is the bane and boon of my existence.

8. A piece of worldbuilding that you like in your own story? (It could be the magic system, a particular place in the story, a law etc)

Why must you continually make me choose a favorite child? I like how I tackled the elements on daycycle, I suppose. The fact that every element has it's own ideology behind it gives me a lot of freedom with what I can do with it. It also helps me say a bunch of stuff with it! And I enjoy making none of the elements good or evil but keeply neutral with their own psychological behavioral patterns.

9. What piece of advice would you say to encourage others to write if they are having a rough patch?

People are going to tell you to just keep going and you're going to think that it's impossible. I'm sorry to tell you that it's hard, but it's possible. I believe in you and your ability to write through this.

Unless you are going through writing burnout TAKE A BREAK. TAKE A BREAK. TAKE A BREAK. "But what if--" NO. BREAK. NOW.

Violet is a smart girl. Some might say snide. The ones who like her would say witty. Although, there aren't really many people that do like her. She's hardly a ray of sunshine.

At the end of the day, the girl is the result of the many neglectful interactions of the education system and a poor homelife, and it shows in everything she does: She's rude, she's abrasive, and she doesn't quite know how to speak to a person without getting defensive over inconsequential comments.

Violet is without a doubt a warrior, though, through and through. She's strong for her age, physically and mentally, and has the capacity for greatness if anyone ever dared to try and hone it. And like a stray dog, she bites the hand that feeds her... but not without good reason.
