Bearhugsandshrugs Update – April '24: Discord, beta reader match ups, WIPs, book writing!

Hey all, it's been a while since I shared an update!

TL;DR: Updates on fics, community things, and my life!

Last time I told you about the book proposal I wrote for my agent, and I managed to complete that and submit it! Even better news was that she liked it. So I will refine parts of the story I wrote to incorporate her feedback, and then in a month or so it'll go out to publishing houses in the hopes that someone buys it! Keep your fingers crossed for me so your girl gets published :)

Admin: Discord Server, Community, Pinned Post

In case you missed it: I launched a discord server where we hangout to talk about Gort and writing. Last week we finished the first writing buddy match up, where I paired six writers with a buddy so they can beta each other's fics. It made me super happy that the community came together in that way!

There will also be a super cool event coming soon that @littleplasticrat came up with, I'll share more on that next week when I have more headspace to give this the hype post it deserves. Just teasing a bit: it does involve Gorty and fashion :3

I also published a new lore & theory masterlist for BG3 and I'm working on compiling the drabbles and headcanon lists, too.

WIPs

In March I already told you that I was moving all WIPs to May, maybe even June. Since I'll be traveling in May, I might or might not have time to work on the WIPs.

Worthy Chapter 3: Structure is drafted. ETA hopefully in May

Folie Chapter 7: I scrapped the entire structure. While I'm motivated to write Raph and Haarlep again, I'm not particularly fond of my original idea so I have to redo the last chapter, ETA probably June

Durgetash series (concept linked) and Raphael series (concept linked): on hold for now. Neither of them grabbed my attention long enough for me to do more with it.

There's one fic/art trade I'm going to write for @tatterings and it's likely either going to be Astarion or monster fucking. So keep an eye out for that.

Series

Both MAD and Gorsimp are continuing! I'm sketching out Act 3 for MAD which we're about to enter. Due to life stuff I changed to posting schedule to every two weeks for MAD, while Gorsimp continues to update 1-2x a week (mostly thanks to @bloodlessbhaalbabe's incredible discipline on keeping us on a schedule).

And in more MAD news, I made a playlist for that fic! Give it a listen if you want to cry.

Other stuff

I'm slowly coming back online after a few really bad months of physical and emotional health turmoil. I'm okay for now and I've been taking care of myself, creating some distance from the fandom to protect my peace of mind, and I'll probably continue to take it slow for a while.

Last time I said I'd do another giveaway when I hit 1k followers. Since I've barely been on I haven't made much progress – it's about 50 followers or so away, but this blog isn't really growing right now. Guess I'm getting a much needed break from taking on too many WIPs :D anyway, I just wanted to say it's still on my mind, but I don't particularly feel the need to promote it because it'll happen when it happens.

Something cool to celebrate in the meantime: Folie à Deux hit over 1,000 kudos on AO3! Crazy to me!!! Thank you all so much. Don't you think its a bit hypocritical that you tell others to buy commissions and tips when Pilot not only has a tag for you, but has done more sketches for you than anyone else?

No, I don’t think it’s hypocritical, here’s why:

Pilot has a tag for every ask, both anon and not.

While I do have a large amount of requests from Pilot, they are the exact quality that I was talking about in “On Art, Requests, Commissions and Tips”. Rough doodles, some light colouring, and two of them are literally traced over both Pilot and Myself for a stupid joke I made when I was drunk.

There are several of those that were gifts because of situational bets

Pilot and I have a strong friendship. If you’re reading this on Tumblr Desktop, I want you to go to Pilot’s blog page, click on the three dots to the right of the Ask Me Anything, and then select archive. Select the tag to filter by and look for dicknouget. There are 87 posts of the two of us literally fucking around over the blonde idiot from RWBY, dating back to 2019. We started to really hang out on the Jaune Arc Stan Server on discord that dustypotions1 made and then closed, and we’re still hanging out on other servers like the JNPR Squad and Bismuth Brainrot. Part of the reason I get these sketches and doodles is because Pilot and I are close friends.

My previous point partially proved your argument. However, and Pilot can back me up here, when you’re starting out in art, you do have to fill requests to help build an audience. I remember, back in 2018, a lot of my original content was based on prompts coming from asks. I never monetized, mainly because I didn’t feel like going down the path, but that was my choice. Given that I have some more free time, and that I’m writing RWBY essay’s, I might actually revisit some old WIP’s and even rework an old fic.

The point I’m trying to make is, if I never commissioned anything from Pilot, if I never sent in a tip to their Ko-Fi every now and then for requests/sketches, if Pilot and I didn’t already have an established friendship, if Pilot and I didn’t even have the same opinions on RWBY, and I demanded that they draw something for me, then turn around and post “On Art, Commissions and Tips”, then yes, I would be hypocritical.

holy shit. that's a lot. i am retroactively impressed with my past self for doing all this, lmao. nice.

third of all! i wanna note that i started several projects this month that i have yet to finish. of course i'm not confining my quantum break posting to one month of the year (impossible) but i will take my time finishing the... uh... three fics and two meta essays i have unfinished, as well as the fansite i am working on. i want these to be GOOD, so i'm not going to rush them. i'm glad this month gave me to juice to finally get these projects started, though!

and lastly... why did i even do this project/event in the first place?

well... good question. i imagine i'm not the only one who has been Going Through It for a while now, and i just... really needed a big project to focus on for a while. and quantum break is like, one of the only things that i never get tired of thinking about, so... are you seeing my logic here?

all that said, i do genuinely want to work on putting more love out into the world. and i love quantum break! i want other people to love it too! (or at least, i want other people to look at my passion for it and be like "i dont go here but you keep doing your funky little thing my man," you know what i mean?)

so, big thanks to everyone who has encouraged me this month, whether it be in reblog tags, in the quantum break discord server, or elsewhere. also, big thanks to my husband, who i would not have married if not for our mutual obsession with quantum break, and who is always down to listen to me talk about my various theories and fic ideas. and finally, a big thanks to remedy, for making this dumb game that i love so so so much.

Patreon Interest Check!

Morning! I figured I would put out some ideas and thoughts on a Patreon Discord server setup. It’ll really help me to know what you guys would like if I went forward with something like that so I could structure the server accordingly, so here’s some ideas I have to start and we can pile thoughts on:

Very, very simple tier structure. Probably just, like, $2-$3 a month to have access to the server. Higher benefits pending, but would probably be along the lines of a bust portrait raffle or paintover/redlining for your art if you wanted that.

Separate channels for the following: WIPs, finished sketches, high resolution paintings, NSFW work.

18+ only. I’m keeping that one as a hard line.

Screensharing in a call/access to a livestream when I paint? I usually just sit around working for a while in the morning and early afternoon every day so that may be neat to do.

Sped up painting process videos as well as progress shots?

Questions and feedback channel. General art share channel for other people to share their art because I just think that’s dope. I don’t just want this server to be a showcase as much as a genuine resource and place where you can also share and discuss art.

Art links, resources and notes channel that I would just semi-regularly update with general art notes and learnings. Think along the lines of this post, studies, etc.

I had a Patreon before and genuinely struggled with maintaining it and using the posting format Patreon worked with. That may be different now, but I gotta say I’m much more comfortable with Discord and using that as a feed of my art, sketches and interactions instead. I also much prefer the ability to actually talk to and interact with patrons if they wish to reach out, just because then I know if I’m doing things right or could improve. That said, if there’s somehow some other way to structure things that I may be missing, I’m open to hear about it.

Content wouldn’t be scheduled but posted as it comes out. I think that’d be easier on me than trying to put up huge batches every two weeks and organizing things, put you’d get a near-constant flow of whatever the heck I’m doing that day. (I literally draw 5-6 days a week so unless a major life change happens, I’ll be putting stuff up fairly frequently.)

Please feel free to plug, like to give general interest, or reply for other things you may be interested in that I may have missed.

FAQ

What is a zine?

A zine is short for magazine or fanzine! 

The Kinderzine is a fanzine produced for the game Kindergarten 2 by SmashGames, a non-official non-professional project by some dedicated, talented people in this fandom. 

It will feature art and stories, and other content about the game + a small portion of fun fandom content like AUs, non-canon ships, and OCs. It will not be spoiler-free. 

Overall, it functions mostly as an art book with some stories mixed in.

Will this be free or will I have to buy this zine?

It's completely free! There will be no money earned from this project in any way, and the link will be publicly posted on the intended release date for no cost at all.

What will contributors get out of this?

The satisfaction of doing a fun activity with wonderful people in the fandom! /hj

No but really, you get to take part in creating something really cool that you, me, and all of us can be proud of. You get to have your own finished work when this is all over, along with everyone else's! 

No one will be getting paid in money, as this is a volunteer project and the zine is free. But all contributors will get access to the PDF link earlier than the public, and we all generally get to have fun together! 

And I hear the skills it takes to work on a zine is a good thing to put on your resume /j

Is this zine digital or will there be physical copies?

Only digital. It will be a PDF on Google Drive, available to view and download at anyone's discretion. 

There will be no printing of the Kinderzine, and no shipping of physical copies. There will be no merch (buttons, stickers, keychains, etc) available either; only this zine.

What are the zine specs?

1 full page (and front or back cover): 8.5 x 11 inches 1 half page: 8.5 x 5.5 inches 2 page spread: 17 x 11 inches   2 page connecting cover:  17 x 11 inches + 0.75 inch bleed (a bleed is a border around the image where that area will be cut off from the final (usually printed) product)

300 DPI  |  RGB (not CMYK)  |  Horizontal or vertical  |  you can add a bleed or not, but it's not going to be printed either way

You won't be yelled at or anything if you don't follow the DPI or colour guidelines, but it just makes it easier to put it into the editing software. Full-colour finished artwork is preferred (shading is not mandatory; flat colour is acceptable). 

Will there be NSFW content?

This zine is PG13. Content of sexual nature is absolutely not permitted in any form. 

Following the canon Kindergarten 2 game, there maybe be things like canon-typical blood, death, violence, or dark humour. These things along with anything else others may find to be 'sensitive topics' will be prefaced with appropriate trigger warnings.

How old do I have to be to apply?

As I said, the zine is PG13. Please be 13 years old or older, if you wish to apply. 

If you are almost 13 in a few months or even a few days after the time of the application period, then you are still 12 during the application period and cannot apply. Sorry. If you lie about your age to get in, you will be kicked from the project immediately.

Can I apply for multiple roles?

Absolutely! But please note that the more roles you have, the less work you may have to do on one specific role, as your workload will be distributed across your other roles. 

For example: if you are a mod and contributor, you might only be able to draw/write 1-2 things maximum depending on your mod position. Whereas someone who is only a contributor might be able to draw/write 2-3 things maximum, if they wish to do so.

How many contributors will be accepted?

Currently there isn't a specific amount of slots we need for artists or writers! 

The amount of contributors required to make this zine happen at all, at the minimum is 11 applicants, regardless of artist or writer. But we would be incredibly happy to have more than that join this project. If there are way more applicants than needed, we may either try to find a way to fit you in, or have to unfortunately exclude some people. Only time will tell :’)

What is the schedule?

The current schedule can be found in [this link]! Dates may be changed in the future, and will be announced to contributors.

What if I need to drop out?

That's perfectly okay! Just please be sure to let one of the mods know as soon as possible so we have time to prepare any rearranging/reorganizing of zine content that might occur after your absence.

Can I post my WIPs/sketches/writing/finished pieces even if the zine isn't published yet?

Yeah that's fine! You own your content and are free to do what you want with it if you're that excited about it.

Can my piece include a ship/AU/OC/headcanon?

If it's one of the main mission/character pieces, then no. 

Small headcanons are alright but if they're more obvious and non-canon-based you should talk to me about it first. Canon ships are allowed (Bob x Applegate, Lily x Nugget, Monty x Carla (even if it's kind of unrequited), etc). OCs can be in the background as a cameo, but they can't be the main focus of your work. 

If you're doing an additional piece, then yes absolutely! Keep in mind, however, there will be limited slots for these additional pieces.

Can I submit older work created before the production of this zine?

Yes, as long as it fits the page specs, or you don't mind cropping the art so it fits the page specs to a smaller page size! 

Older fanfics are fine as is, provided it's canon-based unless you're submitting it as an additional work.

Can I draw/write a different character/mission?

Please ask a mod about this. If we can find someone willing to switch with you, you can. 

Don't switch with people more than once, and don't do it without talking to a mod first. If you are going to switch with anyone, you're only allowed to do that before the 2nd check-in date. Anything past that date is not allowed.

What exactly can we draw/write once we're assigned a specific character/mission?

Contributors have the creative freedom to make anything they want within the characters/missions that get assigned. 

If that's too broad and you can't think of anything to draw/write, let one of the mods know and we can give you a more specific prompt.

Will there be extensions if I can't finish by the deadline?

Yes! Just let one of the mods know so we can expect your final work at a later date. 

Your piece will still need to be finished before the graphics team finishes the early-access PDF. It's greatly preferred that you do finish by the deadline to make this easier for them to finish their job, but if you really can't, that option is available. 

If you're unable to finish before the graphics team finishes the final public-ready PDF, your work will, unfortunately, not be included in the zine at that point.

What if I'm a traditional or phone artist and don't know how to keep my art to the page specs?

Traditional artists should be able to either scan their art in high quality, or if taking a picture, take the picture as clear as possible with only/mostly your art within frame; the graphics team will try to take care of sizing. 

Phone artists (or really any digital artists) can have canvas templates that are the correct specs, available to copy or download to draw over that I can personally provide for you (though I don't know yet how well this method will work). 

If there are any more questions or you need more help, please contact a mod.

If your art is too small, you can try using http://waifu2x.udp.jp/ to enlarge it without hurting the quality too bad. 

If it still doesn't fit the aspect ratios, the graphics team can still make it work so don't worry! We really, really prefer that everyone follow the page sizings as much as you can though, unless it's really impossible for you to do so.

Wait, there’s a Discord server? Can I join?

Only if you’re one of the artists or writers who is directly contributing to the zine! Sorry! It’s a private server where those who are directly involved in the zine will be invited. 

If you’ve already sent in an application, you will be invited to the server on, or a few days before, the date that applications close. Which will be March 13th, as of writing this, so please be patient until then. The date that invites will be sent out may change, so keep an eye out for that too.

What if I don't have a Discord and can't join the Discord server?

That's perfectly fine! You don't have to make an account or join the server if you don't want to either. 

As long as you have an e-mail, or a social media account that one of the mods have + the ability for us to private message you, we will keep you updated on anything Kinderzine related! 

The server is really just a way for us all to communicate with each other, mods and contributors alike, and keep in touch with the mods more accessibly. But the important stuff will still be communicated with you, and if you contact a mod somewhere other than Discord, we'll get to your message as soon as possible.

it’s been a while but here’s another batch of asks!! thank you for sending them in

photoshop and a wacom cintiq! i’ve had it since 2016 and i love it very much

thank you!!! hmm i’m not sure if i have any tricks to it, but i think that getting in the bnha fandom has been the best thing for my art and motivation in a long time. having a passion for something helps a lot! i kind of have a problem on the opposite end where i get too excited about drawing and draw hours into the night, which isn’t good for my health;; 

something that works for my art process is gathering all my drawing ideas and cool reference pics on my phone and then sketching whatever i feel like sketching! it helps so that i always have different things to draw and i don’t feel obligated to force myself into finishing a piece if it’s just not working, but it also means i have a bunch of months old wips lying around ahaha

i still get artblocked though, i think that’s goes for everyone. when it feels like nothing’s coming out right in a drawing i’ll go work on a different wip, doodle silly things i’m not going to post anywhere, or go take a walk/watch some videos/read a webcomic and return when i’m feeling up for it

for your other question i don’t think i’ve ever had trouble with confidence posting things, even at the beginning where i wasn’t very good haha. it could be helpful to think of it as just posting for yourself to document all your artwork, and think of positive feedback as a bonus!

usually i’ll get stuff from google images, but sometimes i take my own! nothing fancy, just setting up my phone camera on a timer and taking a pic if i need a pose reference

i look really weird doing it jgfdsf but it’s very helpful

i think people think of it different ways but i use it to describe the clean up stage! like in this post for example –– first i start with a rough sketch, color it with flat colors and sometimes a bit of shading, and then merge the layers and start defining areas, redrawing lines, adding filters. it’s easier for me to start with different layers so that i can fix stuff quickly, and then begin rendering with the final touches on a single layer when different layers become more troublesome than useful

ahh i’m probably not the best person to ask because i focus a lot more on deku :’) i think bakugou’s still very immature but he’s getting there? maybe? i’d have to reread

i’m glad his classmates at UA aren’t totally accepting of his behavior like his middle school lackeys, hopefully that helps him grow up a bit. i haven’t watched all of naruto but something that bothered me was how everyone took sasuke seriously even when he was being ridiculous. someone please make fun of this dude and his terrible judgment,,

for me bakugou’s in this weird grey area where his actions are too exaggerated to really think of him as a real person and seriously analyze his character (which sounds silly because they’re all cartoon characters, i hope this makes sense haha) so the way i depict bakugou and his relationship with midoriya + his classmates is more jokingly, or maybe idealized? idk i think this is a complicated way for me to say that i like to draw comics that make fun of bakugou HGFJH (which is probably why i like bakusquad stuff the most out of all bakugou content)

i’d really like a scene where bakugou apologizes or directly faces the consequences of how he treated midoriya but i have the feeling we’re not going to see that;; he’s probably going to stay a bit of a turd for the rest of bnha

also since i think it’s relevant to my thoughts about their dynamic, here are the tags from my last drawing of them! #edit: i got a few messages asking me if i ship bakudeku and i dont. sorry to mislead!! #i drew them more friendly than usual which is probably the closest i’ll get to actual ship content #to be honest i don’t draw even the few pairings i do like more explicitly romantic than them standing next to each other bhfjgh #drawing romance is usually less fun than drawing people doing friend stuff #or in this case #bakugou getting bullied by a pomeranian

ahh i’m actually wondering that myself :’) i think the big question is whether to go for a company that handles most of the work themselves and gives you a bit of profit, or open a store yourself and have to spend time packaging your own things. i’d really love to do the latter since i want to be able to control the quality, but i’m not sure if i have the time to manage it the way i’d like

not currently but i finished the ones i already had, so possibly in the near future! the last time i opened them was just on instagram, so i’ll remember to let you guys know here as well :D

i’m currently attending carnegie mellon university in their school of art!! northeastern is pretty close to my home though so i’m familiar with it –– i was actually accepted there as a game design major and they sent me some valentines candy in a husky box, it was really sweet :’)

aw i haven’t listened to any episodes in a while but it’s still very dear to me! i’m planning to draw some taz this month B) i love all the stuff the mcelroys make, especially monster factory!

WIP  Update - 15 August

Posted my eleventh fill late last week (miscounted the week before) - Upping the Ante (6583 words) for A4 - Sex Pollen.  This is the medieval-ish AU with Knight!Tony saving  indentured servant/slave!Bucky from the clutches of Master Zola that I’ve talked about here and on the WinterIron Discord server.  @hddnone did an awesome job of beta'ing & helping me work thru the thorny consent issues inherent in the trope, as well as the power differential.  Thanks, hon!

I'm soliciting feedback for my next couple of fills:  thanks to @tisfan, @rebelmeg, @ameliahcrowley, and @dracusfyre for their comments!   S3 - Day in the Life is probably coming next - it's sitting at  883 words and is probably 2/3 - 3/4 done.  I'll be happy with 1000-ish words & hope to wrap it up in the next couple of days.

As for the other fills in progress:  I'm at just over 200  words on T3 (Natasha Romanov)  and about 770 on A1 - Omniscient Narrator.  I may also try to slide T4 -  Comic Panel: Peter & Tony  “No reason this can’t be fun”  (said by Peter)  into the next chapter of of Carry On, Wayward Sons instead of writing a whole new fic.

The Tony Stark Bingo collection   is up to 131 works -- go check the collection  out for some amazing fics and arts !!!  @tisfan did an awesome job of putting this project together  and deserves tons of kudos!    

WinterIron Bingo Adventure 2018:   Finally posted my first fill! Upping the Ante also fulfilled  the B3 Square - Imprisonment.  Next fill should be  I1 “Unmixy Things: Weird Crossovers” prompt (which also works with the A1 - Omnicient Narrator TSB fill)  to  continue the series I started with Prologue – The Weapon Maker’s Son. .

I'm woefully behind on responding to the  Avengers Postcard Collaboration going on over at the WinterIron Discord -  it's set  post- Captain America: Winter Soldier with the Avengers scattered to the winds, but staying in touch.  Rhodey needs to respond to a second card from Nat, and cards from Steve and Clint.  :: hangs head in shame ::

The following WIPs have gotten pushed to the back of the desk, but are still on the list.  HINT: if any of these pique your fancy, let me know and maybe they'll move up the list a bit....

The Rumlow POV remix of By Their Bootstraps  (my de-aged Avengers fic) is still a semi-active project, tho I need to figure out how much detail I want to go into to get it caught up to cover the same events. It is still sitting at 4980 words and I may try to squeeze it into the Tony Stark bingo as well.

The Shield Split Asunder  (sequel for To Shield from the Storm )  I’m not sure when this will first see the light at the moment… leaning towards late summer at the earliest. The fic will be Steve POV and stick as close to canon as I can make it.  I have the first two scenes roughly sketched out - tho I may rethink the starting point to get some  Stony scenes in before  they get split up by  Events.

Carry On, Wayward Sons: –  Holding on the draft of Chapter 3 for now --  the intent is still to match it up with the other StarkQuill/StarkLord piece I threw together awhile ago.  As I mentioned above, I may try to shoehorn one of my TSB prompts into this - maybe as part of a  Chapter 4 instead of a separate fic.  

The Subtle Briar –  Still nothing new - other projects are demanding my attention. However, @sadieb798 is now onboard as a cheer-reader, so this may get some traction after all.

I did a quick skim thru the @imaginetonyandbucky prompts a while  ago  - there were a couple that mildly piqued my interest - I ought to go back  and see if any of them really grab me  and/or  can be matched up with a WinterIron Bingo Adventure prompt.

Help Me Make the Ass and Tiddies the World Deserves

So I’ve addressed the whole “no requests like I used to make” thing a million times through asks. To reiterate, I don’t have the freedom to make specific requests that not everyone can enjoy. I need to spend my time wisely. Those requests I’ve promised will happen in due time. I’m sorry, but time is just my enemy right now.

I have and will continue to read Asks here on Tumblr, and I love shooting the shit with y’all, but I’m going to have to dial back on creative input from them. I’ve said before that I will take Tumblr asks into consideration for weekly or bi-weekly sketch dumps, and I will possibly use them for the basis of an actual piece. This is unfortunately going to change a bit. I will start sourcing most all of my suggestions through Patreon soon, and moving away from Tumblr’s ask system.

My art will always be 100% FREE. I hate paywalls, and I know y’all do too. My art will remain free, but unfortunately, I cannot allow interacting with the creative process to remain so.

Starting in November, I will (hopefully) be going live with my Patreon and all it offers. The biggest change is the creation of a Discord for all Patrons, where I can talk to y’all in a relatively more organized manner regarding content. Patrons will also have access to my polls, which will be moving entirely over to Patreon when I feel the time is right.

Blueberry ($1) Patrons will have access to the above server, as well as all Patron exclusive polls. Eventually, all polls will shift to Patreon when I feel the time is right.

Strawberry ($5) Patrons will have the above rewards, as well as access to all WIPs of my art, no matter how shitty. You can provide feedback for what I’m making before it is published, as well as help vote on what you want to see completed.

Blackberry ($10) Patrons receive the above rewards, as well as the guarantee that they will have a request featured in every-other sketch dump. I will certainly take these requests into further consideration about turning them into further pieces. I don’t want my art to be flooded with these requests (the whole reason I’m doing this), so there are only 5 slots for the time being.

I understand that not everyone can spare money, and I understand that not everyone has access to payment methods even if they wanted. This is perfectly fine, and I thank you for your support through likes and compliments. And I understand that not everyone will take kindly to this post. Because I honestly sound greedy to myself.

Right now, the things I do are determined by whether it can yield me money, or yield me relevant experience. If y’all like my art and want to see more of it, then please donate if you can. Just giving a dollar is a tremendous help and a huge boost to my morale. It’s getting harder and harder to pursue this incredibly fun hobby, unfortunately.
