The Dragon's Warrior

When Emersyn was a child, she got a strange blessing from some wandering stranger her parents sheltered. She deemed it a curse all her life, followed by strange dreams and accidents, up until the night the adventurer group she joined for money stumbled into some old caves they never should have set foot inside.

Her blessing proves to be more than she thought, and Emersyn finds herself face to face with dragons when legends say all of them died centuries ago. The legends strangely forgot to mention that dragons were able to take human form, and now she has to deal with a flirty dragon who tries to win her over and his little sister while trying to keep everyone alive on their journey to find other dragons hiding among humans, elves, and dwarves to find out what happened and what to do next.

SYNOPSIS

Lonel has two secrets. One, he is the last of his kind since his mother was killed. Two, he is certain a vampire is to blame. These, however, are secrets he can’t tell anyone about. Vampires do not exist, and he can't be sure if his mind could be trusted anyway. Until one day, during his daily forensic cleaner job, he witnesses a scene that changes everything.

LOCATIONS - IMPORTANT ASPECTS

AURIS CITY ― The capital of Auris, where everything happens. HALL OF ECHOES ― The national museum of Auris. It's a place where every historical knowledge is stored, including mythical legends, and possible artefacts. THE CRIMSON SHADOW ― A famous club and bar for VIP members only. Only those can enter who were invited, and to get an invitation, you need to meet certain requirements. The regulars, however, can't say anything about it. They sometimes seem to not be able to. There are also rumours about occasional orgies, and that it's a strip club than anything else in actuality.

CHARACTERS

LONEL. A lone forensic cleaner who’s secretly helping the police while cleaning the crime scenes. He's a dangerous man with an obsession over his mother's death. Meet the Arcanist, and his magical sword, The Arcana, in its base form!

I've been rewatching the Tales of Arcadia shows, and it has led to me starting an extremely self-indulgent Chosen One(tm) story.

Currently unnamed, but The Arcanist was a normal college student when the Arcana chose him to be the newest protector of Elemental-kind. Thrown into a world of magic, he's gotta learn the ropes fast if he's going to keep both humanity and elementals safe!

Once he's mastered its base form, The Arcanist can infuse the Arcana with different elements, changing both its appearance and giving it special abilities to help him in his fights.

There will be an over-arching plot, but most chapters are going to have a sort of "monster of the week" format, and I'm going to be releasing chapters here on Tumblr and made on a wordpress blog dedicated to it? We'll see after I get a few chapters written skjfnkejsg

WORKING TITLE: Catching Shadows

GENRE: High Fantasy / Adventure

SETTING:  Akerus - a world of magic, incredible beasts, tension among kingdoms, and a mysterious darkness that hasn’t been seen in millennia.

TROPES: It’s high fantasy, you know what to expect. Gods, great evil, rising heroes, magic, war, non-human people, etc. but also, found family, revenge, coming to terms with oneself…

STORY: On a path of revenge, Ithyrne must first discover exactly what killed her mother. Leaving her ancient lands, traveling across an ocean, and trekking through the Kingdom of Lumos to find answers leads to more than she could have ever expected. Nikolaj Wolbern was gifted with a talent for magik and spent his young years working that skill. After tragedy struck his family he found himself wandering the forests of Lumos aimlessly. A chance meeting finally gives him a path to follow - but will it only lead to more tragedy? A young, high ranking, traitorous knight flees after discovering the cause she had been fighting for was a lie. Leaving everything behind but her sword, Arya Stonehelm quietly escapes into the Kingdom of Lumos. She knows if she is discovered the accusation of spy will have her killed, or far worse. Seeking answers to the war, her interest is piqued when she overhears two travelers, and requests to join them. Besides, traveling alone in an enemy land can be dangerous.

THE CHARACTERS: 

Ithyrne: Quiet, observant, inquisitive, and thoughtful. Strategic and unhesitating. Kind to a fault, and deadly to a virtue.

Nikolaj: Cautious, vigilant, polite, and intelligent. Excitable and caring. A smile and laugh to subdue the pain hidden underneath.

Arya: Charismatic, friendly, interested, and lighthearted. Brave and focused. Strong willed and just, but lost and unsure.

STUFF THAT IS NIFTY: So much worldbuilding that I’m still working on. The creation of language and straying from stereotypes adding to that. I have several Gods, animal species, races, etc. that I’ve created and am still detailing. Along with the below breakdowns, I have humans, a more beast like people, a version of the “halfling”, and a lot more.

My version of Elves are called Lyr, similar to the generic style, but with my own changes and additions. Just like earth, due to location, there are variances in skin, hair, and eye color. The smaller group of northern Lyr, or Snow Lyr, are lighter skin, and more likely to have light hair and eyes. The larger region south of the snow fields are where the Forest Lyr are found. They mostly consist of dark skin, with dark hair and eyes. Both groups evolved to blend, camouflage, into their environment. There are of course Snow Lyr living in the south, and Forest Lyr living in the north, as well as those with lineage from both regions. My version of dwarves are called Uanyr and vary quite a bit from the stereotype. Still live underground, still miners and artisans, but are unique to my worldbuilding style. I haven’t ironed everything out, but I’m going in with a more biological thought process. Pale skin, blindness, and enhanced hearing to name a few ideas.

STATUS CHECK: I feel so deep into this world, and yet only scratching the surface. I have a long way to go.

The corners are major places, horizontal middle is referencing the characters, top middle and bottom middle are more abstract ideas and referencing the struggles in the story.

so, my goal for nanowrimo last month was 10,000 words. and yeah, i managed to achieve that, by writing literally everything except my camp wip. oops. so here's a quick summary and excerpt from what i did manage to write for 'don't pay the ferryman'.

s u m m a r y

don't pay the ferryman was my camp nano wip for july. it's a 'the good place' inspired story that follows thea, a ferryman in the Afterlife. the Afterlife is an amalgamation of various afterlife concepts, the way it presents itself to the deceased is catered to the individual. in the case of cerys, thea's new fare, Afterlife presents itself in the form of a long taxi drive home.

thea has been working the Afterlife for as long as she can remember. she had been human, once. she had died and entered the Afterlife, armed only with the silver coins in her hand. it was there she had met her guide and made a fatal mistake. she handed him the coins. she paid him before the journey was done. in doing so, thea swapped places with him, becoming one of the ferryman.

now, presented with the opportunity, thea must make a choice. does she trick cerys into paying her, thereby securing her freedom? does she condemn the girl to a seemingly endless torment?

So, to reiterate. Philosophy is derived from the ancient Greek word meaning love of knowledge. The study of Philosophy seeks to make meaning of a seemingly random existence whilst attempting to find the answers to questions there are no real answers to. The Trolley Problem could be avoided with adequate occupational health and safety standards and Phillipa Foot would have made for the world’s worst taxi driver. Or maybe the best, depending on your point of view.

Unofficial WIP Intro

So I have bad luck doing official-sorta WIP intros, but I want a little bit of accountability (and also to be a bit more active on here), so... here’s a brief dot-point overview of the one that’s currently consuming my brain:

inspired directly by spite (because of a book I read recently that annoyed the crap out of me)

bodyguard/protectee dynamic (ultimately friends-to-lovers, I think)

urban fantasy in a World Not Our Own But Close

magic system TBD, but the MC is Barren (aka, has no magic -- this is kinda a big deal)

incorporating bits and pieces from other WIPs I’ve played with, most significantly the arcane demon dog Shade (who is also a disobedient little shit)

seriously messed up characters who don’t want to process their trauma

murder mystery! Maybe! Sort of! Think urban fantasy fare with the characters investigating something. It kicks off the plot. It maybe is the plot. Who really knows?

magic havers vs have not (read: privileged vs others)

dual POV (in first person! Wish me luck separating their voices ahaha)

loyalty and codependency and love that leaves scars

...aaaand, cuz why the hell not, have a little snippet from the first scene under the cut:

Caden took half a step back. We got within arm’s reach of him just as the shadows solidified into a coherent form.

It looked like a dog, as much as a creature made out of shadows can look like anything. Tall, though, taller than any real example of its breed, which looked mostly like a dobermann. Its shoulders easily reached Caden’s waist. The tips of the pricked ears were level with his chin. The smouldering red eyes  bored into his neck. And the steely metallic fangs, revealed when it slowly opened its mouth, were just the right height to rip out his throat.

The shadow creature made a noise that sounded like a cross between metal in a garbage disposal and a chainsaw. Caden’s step backwards was quick enough that his ankle turned and Ilya had to catch his elbow to stop him sprawling on his ass.

“That’s…” Caden gave me a cursory glance before he fixed his horrified gaze on Ilya. “That’s a—”

“Shade,” Ilya said.

“Holy shit.” What little colour remained in Caden’s face drained. He slowly turned his face back towards the shadowy dog, adam’s apple bobbing in a deep swallow. “That’s a Shade.”

“No,” Ilya said. “Well, I mean, yes, it is, but I meant — Shade.”

The Shade — that Ilya ingenously named Shade — tilted its head. The wisps of shadow that made up its long and pain-in-the-ass tail began to swish back and forth.

Ilya cleared his throat and tried, with great and heavy gravity, “Shade.”

Shade bounced — all four feet off the ground, shoulders at the pinnacle, an expression of joy if I’ve ever seen one — and landed in a play bow. He made a sound similar to an unbalanced washing machine and then turned and bolted off down the alley.

About title: So, for this I wanted to tie the meanings behind the main characters' surnames into the title while invoking a sense of certain colours and adventure, kind of? It's honestly a bit misleading.. one main character's surname is Bijoux, which is literally just the French word for jewel, and I associate them with indigo, so I put sea jewels in the title. The other main character's surname, Meredith, means something like lord/great lord, so I threw that into the title, too. It's a fantasy adventure story, so I wanted that to carry into the title, and I think it does, but the characters don't actually encounter sea jewels, or great lords; it's mostly just mountains and learning to navigate each other.

About: So, in recovering bewitched lost villagers for the village of Nomen, magician Geo Bijoux is saddled with the responsibility of depositing Chad Meredith under a mountain in return for the missing villagers that the local dragon has been protecting. In their reluctant travels in search of a good, uninhabited mountain, Geo learns more of the reason for Chad's eternal imprisonment, and the two, against their wishes, grow closer through their adventures and the unavoidable shenanigans that come with a pair of young magicians traversing a continent.

Setting: So I lied when I said Giselle & Darius is chronologically the first story that happens on Dirt; this actually happens 200-300 years before that. (I don't have exact numbers yet,,) Also, it's set all over Astelle, but mostly south of the Heart of Astelle, which is a big mountain.

You are distinctly aware of the sound of tapping on the wood floor behind you, like the sound of someone tapping their nails in impatience. You turn to look behind you, startled, but realize it’s only a servant, broom in hand, sweeping along the walls. You no longer hear the sound, just the broom swishing against the dark, polished wood. 

As you turn to continue on your path, something catches in the corner of your eye. In the dim flickering light, you catch a shadow that seems to stretch from the servant, long and malformed. 

It stretches towards you, and you let out a noise as you jump. The sweeping stops and you look up to see the servant, looking quizzically in your direction, a normal, human shadow extending from their body. 

You slowly turn back, a little embarrassed over the encounter, and continue to your rooms.

You speed up as you walk back, pointedly not looking at the shadows, distinctly aware of a tapping sound following you through the halls. Safely inside your rooms, you notice a small notecard with dark red lettering placed on the front desk. It reads: Don’t mind the servants.

also lesbians! contains time shenanigans and dragons. set in a world sort of exactly like the Modern Pre-Crown World in fionna and cake. i reference this because my main lady penny is a silly little history buff and decides to go on this expedition to find more information on a lost goddess, and ends up getting entangled with time. after a long, emotional trek that goes wrong more times than it goes right. penny somehow manages to get sent thousands of years in the future when the world has been ravaged by magic and godly power. and then she meets a girl who has a dragon and a dude that does everything she says, and more shit happens!

untitled crime story (now: unorthodox methods!)

i will not stop calling it untitled crime story!!! but i had to come up with a silly and catchy title because i chose this as a premise for the feature film script i'm writing for class. but untitled crime story i'll remember you

you guessed it.... lesbians.............. but they're exes with sooo much unspoken beef and they go off-grid together anyways so neither of them get put in prison ??? it's in a world where magic is normal and a bit frowned upon, now getting out of have because there's a global shortage of the one drug that suppresses magical powers. and this girl's ex calls her one night! the fun ex---she's supposed to be fun!! but she sounds super terrified and serious and chaos ensues! lesbians running from magical authorities and having to face their very long, very loud shared history.

Writing Update (09/22/23)

Hello everyone! It's been a while since I made one of these, huh? 👀

I've spent the past few weeks settling back into university work, but now I'm back into the swing of writing and developing things. So I thought I would take this chance to clarify some things, and lay down what the future of The Exile is gonna look like.

The Public Demo is now done. Chapter Five is the last chapter that you'll be able to play for free until the game is finished. Right now, I am working on rewriting what is written and porting the game into Twine. This means I'm expanding scenes, adding variation and flavor text, fixing stubborn lingering bugs, and implementing a codex + optional flashback scenes (*cough* and art *cough*) into the game. This will take a while.

I'm not just copy and pasting things into Twine and changing the coding-- I'm polishing things, adding lore and info, and overall just making the game significantly more "put together" so-to-speak. The version of The Exile that's up right now has been the Alpha Version of the game, It's never been properly edited beyond fixing glaringly obvious typos, continuity errors, and bugs. Now, I'm working on actually implementing broader, more complex changes into the game based on feedback I've gotten over the coarse of the past two years of writing!

My hope is to release the Twine Demo at some point around January. But that's a goal, not a deadline. I'll likely take in more beta readers for the Twine version of the game at some point, and post the Twine build onto my Patreon more casually in the following months. I'll delve more into both of things, however, when the time comes.

My hope is to be as transparent as possible and try to be more active on here as I work on things, so expect to see writing updates once more! Though they'll likely be quite short, functioning just to keep you guys updated on what's going on ~*behind the scenes*~

I have one active WIP that I aspire to publish and one science fiction worldbuilding project that I write for fun but don't actively intend to publish.

The active WIP is a cool wizards story descended from stories like Earthsea and Name of the Wind. It has a female protagonist who earns many names over the course of the story. Most importantly it is about cool wizards doing cool wizard shit but it's also about becoming the weirdo you really want to be in the face of immense social pressure to be normal. There is personal transformation as a magic thing and (imo) a cool original magic system + worldbuilding. It's sort of for kids but I'm hoping that it's accessible yet interesting enough for all ages.

My pet worldbuilding project is an exploration of what cultures might look like during the earliest phase of humanity expanding to the stars. I like trying to figure out what life on other planets might be like and what sorts of people would be on the ships that go to them.

My favorite authors are N.K Jemisin, Ursula K LeGuin and Kim Stanley Robinson. I'm also a fan of some big fantasy and sci-fi classics like Dune and Lord of the Rings. Oh and Star Trek! I like utopian fiction and I don't feel like there are many popular examples of it.

The Vipers, the most reputable gang in the Northside of Riverwood, and the only family you had left.

The boss is dead... We have no leads.

A single message had completely turned your life on its head. The man that had singlehandedly saved you from yourself, from ending up face down in a gutter, was dead. You don't hesitate in volunteering to help hunt down his killer-- not if it meant protecting your family and avenging his death. Even if it means calling on your biggest rivals for help or getting assisted by an over-eager detective.

Desperate times called for desperate measures...

Customize your MC: appearance, parts of your personality, segments of your background, hobbies, vices, and more! Do you have what it takes to avenge the death of your mentor? Do you have a nickname that's specific to the Vipers?

While you're investigating make sure you maintain contact with your gang, and don't forget that you have a job. Even if it is just at a shitty cafe.

Romance is definitely something that is offered and will bring insightful moments to characters that may otherwise remain an enigma to you. Or, of course, you can strike up a friendship with them!

Find a killer and either take justice into your own hands, allow someone else to do it, or follow the law!

Heather Grant ✶ She/Her ✶ 29 ✶

The Heiress of Riverwood Royalty, the Grant Family, and one of the only people that could offer assistance with the investigation-- with her limitless amount of resources and the fact that the Grant Family seemed to own all of Riverwood. The only problem? She absolutely hates the Vipers. Will you be able to come to some sort of middle ground?

Special Aspects: Enemies-to-Lovers, but will you be able even to blame her for her hatred in the end?

Damien Frost ✶ He/Him ✶ 29 ✶

A recently promoted detective within the RPD. A man that's been assigned the case, either out of pity or malevolence, you aren't quite sure, but Detective Frost isn't one to give up, even when all the odds seem to be stacked against him. In fact, he seems to have a penchant to appear wherever you are, and he doesn't seem to mind at all that he's working alongside criminals. He simply wants to get the crime solved. Is it only because he wishes to prove himself? Or is it something more?

Special Aspects: Law Enforcement Officer with a Gangster... Need I say more?

Stephen/Stephanie Matthews ✶ He/Him or She/Her ✶ 27 ✶

Stephen/Stephanie, or simply Stevie, is someone you know you can count on no matter what. They'd as easily offer you their last beer as they would knife someone in the gut to protect you. Your best friend since you joined the Vipers, being the one that had trained you after your initiation, it's no surprise that they join you on the hunt for the killer.

Gabriel/Gabriella DeLuca ✶ He/Him or She/Her ✶ 28 ✶

The other half of your motley crew within the Vipers. Gabby is known for a multitude of things within the Northside, being a jack of all trades when it comes to their skills, but their true trademark is the sea of broken hearts they've left in their wake. With a disarming smile and devil-may-care attitude, it isn't hard to understand how someone could be pulled into their axis. It's just escaping it unscathed that's the challenge.

Special Aspects: Have the option to be friends with benefits, or simply friends, and see how that could influence the possible romance to come.

Leon/Lena Prince ✶ He/Him or She/Her ✶ 28 ✶

The one person you wouldn't wish to run into within Riverwood-- having completely destroyed your relationship with them; possibly breaking their heart in the process. You haven't heard much about them since you left the Southside, but learning about them taking over the rival gang of the Vipers? Your week just couldn't get any better, could it?

Special Aspects: Exes-to-Rivals-to-Friends-to-Lovers (once more). Will you be able to build back the trust you lost?
