#wights
Wait a damn minute
How do coloured contact lenses work on wights if they don’t have pupils cause yknow coloured contacts only have the coloured part, right? The middle is free, cause that’s where your pupil is. And if there was a black spot on the contact lenses then you might have some trouble seeing. Uhm
So wights only have a coloured circle in their eyes when wearing contact lenses. Still making them look suspicious. It doesn’t actually help disguising themselves at all
Better stick to sunglasses then

I always forget that
My brain always makes me completely forget that Wights are cannibals. I don't know, this information is always deleted from my head and when I remember it I'm shocked by it.
I know that not all of them are (they are no longer, every hollow is a cannibal by necessity), but some continue with the habit. Percival murnau I'm sure I'd still eat human flesh if I had to. He wouldn't think twice, as is described in the book, he will eat anything and is so unpleasant that his peers don't like to be around him.
Another one who I'm absolutely sure is also a cannibal is Caul. He eats peculiar souls, and I think this still qualifies as cannibalism, after all souls are parts of peculiar bodies, very important parts, and Caul describes how he eats them in the second book: he says that souls without anything have no taste, but that they are great with seasoning and as an accompaniment to white meat.☠️
There's probably more, and it's quite disturbing, some of them never lose their appreciation for human flesh☠️

Day 7 - Foils and Adversaries
Jon knew that face. Othor, he thought, reeling back. Gods, he’s dead, he’s dead, I saw him dead.
Something a little more ambitious today 😅 one of my favourite scenes from AGOT - Jon’s first look at what threat truly lies beyond the wall.

Paranatural masterpost re:
The Sphinxes
Sphinxes 1-3
We have 3 explicitly confirmed sphinxes: the Sphinx of Rules/Games, the Sphinx of Truth, and the unnamed Golden Sphinx. All 3 have passive powers that work whether they want it or not, on themselves as well as others.
Tumblr media
Of the two we know the powers of, both are related to words: for Rules, written or spoken rules become reality. For Truth, all words spoken in her presence become the truth, and although the wording can be misleading, this can even predict the future. Golden's powers interfere with (at least) Truth's powers.
Sphinx #4: The BERG
The fandom-named "Broken Evil Riddle God," the spirit that Max is a medium for, is likely a Sphinx! First of all, its namesake, Doorman's dialogue with it, refers to its powers as "riddles and word games," which is in theme with the other known Sphinxes.
Tumblr media
Secondly, both Max's spirit trance and dreamscape contain sphinx-related imagery alongside Scrapdragon's theming. His spirit trance has distant pyramids. The dreamscape around him features, as this post points out, pyramid-shaped lights, magnet-like hieroglyphs, and a cat-eared sofa.
This may or may not be relevant, but keep it in mind for later: In addition to the purple furniture surrounding Max's dreamscape, Max features a purple aura around his black spectral energy on two occasions: Once, when being possessed by BERG to save his life, and once back in Chapter 3 --
Tumblr media
starting when he doesn't have his bat in hand, but is trying to get it back. We know at this point he can't consciously control his spectral energy very well, but whether by instinct or by something else helping to shape it, it takes on the form of tendrils reaching for the bat.
Additionally, Doorman comes pretty close to probably saying the word "sphinxes" when discussing Max and Isaac:
The other boy, Max... I sensed he, too, was unaware that he carries one of the s-
"Wait a minute," I hear you say, "TOO"?!
Sphinx #5: King Catnine
Tumblr media
Like all other sphinxes we've seen, King Catnine appears in a catlike form, with small wings which are usually wrapped around the front of his waist. (They are present in this flashback too, but obscured in the above image.)
Interestingly, his back legs appear to be shaped spectral energy, and he may only be able to form them when at full power like this. Though we do see the Sphinx of Truth make a similar manifestation, using spectral energy to extend her body parts:
Tumblr media
"But what do storm powers have to do with words/riddles" I dunno yet! Moving on--
The Great Sphinx
There has been reference to a "Great Sphinx" which was split into pieces. As this post notes, Doorman brings up wights, plural, in the same paragraph -- as if he means that was one of the "defeated" wights.
Tumblr media
And we know that destroying a wight is both nigh-impossible and incredibly dangerous... but perhaps breaking one into pieces is a safer option?
King Catnine is seeking the power of a Wight. (Seeking to return to their former glory?) Notably, Wights are the exclusive keepers of White spectral energy, which functions like "each color simultaneously." In real life, white light is a combination of all other light colors.
As this post points out, most of the sphinxes so far have spectral energy colors matching with one of the primary (red/blue/green) or secondary (yellow/cyan/magenta) colors of light. And as this reminded me, Doorman refers to Truth as "the blue one."
Maybe the BERG has black energy like Max, or it's even colorless.
But if you're willing to stretch a little, remember the purple associations with the BERG? It might fill in that magenta slot...
Meaning we're only missing green.

A Game of Thrones, Prologue
Will rose. Ser Waymar Royce stood over him.
His fine clothes were a tatter, his face a ruin. A shard from his sword transfixed the blind white pupil of his left eye.
The right eye was open. The pupil burned blue. It saw.
The broken sword fell from nerveless fingers. Will closed his eyes to pray.
Long, elegant hands brushed his cheek, then tightened around his throat.
They were gloved in the finest moleskin and sticky with blood, yet the touch was icy cold.

"Go," said the bird on his shoulder. "Go, go, go."
Samwell III - 647
Just as things look hopeless, Sam and Gilly are rescued by an unkindness of ravens who fly down from the Weirwood attacking the Wights.
This is a glorious scene. The only problem with it is there’s just too much stuff for my small rectangle. I had to fit in the tree the wights, the ravens, and the terrified Sam and Gilly. I couldn’t use everything! I ended up focusing on the tree. I could only put so many Ravens in the picture while still having room to show everything else. The wights suffered the most from this. People forget just how big' a raven is. It doesn’t take that many of them to cover someone or something up.

Cold be hand and heart and bone, and cold be sleep under stone: never more to wake on stony bed, never, till the Sun fails and the Moon is dead. In the black wind the stars shall die, and still on gold here let them lie, till the dark lord lifts his hand over dead sea and withered land.

I had never stopped to think about it...
There are wights and hollow children. No, you didn't read it wrong. They probably existed and there were many of them. Caul's rebel movement was not just made up of old people and adults. Just as there were some women in the movement, there were also many pre-teens and children who wanted to have their freedom and fell for Caul's lies. The fact that we don't see them in the books must be because they have already been exterminated. Small Hollows are easier to kill, and as Wights it must have been easy to trap these, Not to mention that Caul possibly discarded these from his final army. Help is help, Caul wouldn't mind having children in his movement, after all they are still peculiar, and children are easier to manipulate. This is strange and sad at the same time.

Magic Awakens | CH 61: Jon Snow XV
Summary: Jon reunites with Bran in the cave with Bloodraven. He struggles to leave him behind as he prepares to meet Robb in the Free Folk camp.
A Preview:
Ghost snarled and sniffed at an unseen foe. He knew this foe well now, knew what the cold it brought felt like. The dead were upon them.
When a giant and smaller shadows next to it grew upon the horizon, he knew Bran was close. Hodor was the giant and Coldhands, Bran, Meera, Jojen, and Summer must be the smaller shadows, though he saw only three at first. When they were eighty yards out, they halted, feeling the shift in temperature and their wolves demeanor as well.
Coldhands was the first to realize what was near, his blackened hand going up to halt them and survey the area. Meera set Jojen down, who looked close to death, and he now understood why he didn’t see the fourth shadow. The elk Coldhands rode was nowhere to be seen, though it wasn’t a shock that the animal didn’t survive such a long and perilous journey.
After a discussion, Coldhands marched up the incline towards them, Hodor trailing behind with Bran secured upon his back. Halfway between where Meera and Jojen rested and Jon and Leaf sat waiting at the mouth of the cave, Summer stopped suddenly, the fur upon his back standing at attention and began to growl, Ghost joining in.
Bran began to frantically call for Hodor to stop, but he would not listen. Fear had taken over the gentle giant as he tried desperately to keep up with Coldhands. In the midst of chaos and shouting, a hand burst from the snow below to wrap around Hodor’s ankle, knocking him and Bran both to the ground.
Leaf, Jon, Coldhands, and Meera leapt into action as more wights erupted around them. Jon watched in horror as Bran lay motionless face down in the snow, Hodor running back to fight off wights and carry Jojen and leaving his brother defenseless. Jon swore he saw Hodor’s eyes go white, the pupils and irises disappearing indicative of being skinchanged.
Leaf set to burning the wights with torches as quickly as they could manage while Ghost bounded to Bran’s side to help Summer protect his brother’s limp body. Meera held a long bronze knife and a three-pronged frog spear, combatting the decaying enemy around them. Jon withdrew Longclaw and as he sliced and stabbed through rotted flesh, he muttered spells beneath his breath.
His first spell froze a wight close to Bran in a block of ice. The second created a long spike from the snowy earth below to jut out and stab a wight through its head stopping its approach towards Meera who was already engaged with three. It continued to writhe and screech despite its impalement, its limbs flailing to scratch and kill at the air.
As more dead erupted from the frozen ground and descended upon them from the eerie mist that now hindered their sight, Jon was throwing out more ice magic to help those becoming overwhelmed by them. A lull gave him an opportunity to perform a larger spell as corpses burned at Leaf’s feet, were trapped by ice he had thrown at them, or were incapacitated by the Valyrian steel of Longclaw.
He muttered the ancient words of the Old Tongue and a wall six feet high erupted from one side, beginning closest to him until it reached behind Meera bringing up the rear and curved until it began to make its way back to him and shield the other side. A cold sweat had broken out upon his skin, dripping down his forehead and neck, his arms and legs shaking from the effort. Only a few wights still animated by the Others' magic were not encased or blocked outside of the small ice wall, and they easily took them down as they made it the last few feet to reach Jon and Leaf.
They finally made it to safety inside the mouth of the cave with protection spells upon it. It was the last skill the children had taught him and one he had the most trouble perfecting. So far Jon had managed to place a protection spell around a small area that dissipated within an hour, nothing like the spells woven into the Wall, nor the spell that prevented the wights and Other from attacking within the caves.
As they carried an alert Bran into the dark tunnels Jon called home for the last moons, a shiver ran through him. He noticed the involuntary spasms of those around him as well, the cold chill that passing through the magic barrier of the protection spell caused. Bran opened his mouth to speak but no words escaped, instead his head fell to the side and his body went slack as he lost consciousness.

omg thank you for your tags!! and i think it was you who left me a comment also? but yrah thank you !!! and im happy to chat about wights and hollows any time…
penny for your thoughts re: how much wights remember from when they were hollows?
Hey dude, sorry to keep you waiting! That was me commenting :)
I think it depends on a few things, like how they were taken care of as hollows, how they were taken care of when they transformed, and stress levels and such. If they were taken care of really well and not as stressed as they could be throughout the whole thing then I think their memories can come back pretty intact, but otherwise they’ll probably lose a lot. Even when their memories are good, I do think they’re really easy to manipulate when they first transform though.

What do you think of the Coldhands is a Skinchanger theory?
I'm not familiar with the theory. If I googled correctly, it's essentially that Coldhands is a skinchanger who warged a / his own dead corpse...? I might have gotten that wrong. Please correct me if I did!
Either way, I don't have too many thoughts on it. It seems obvious he has warging abilities, considering he's riding an elk around the landscape like it's a horse, and he appears to be communicating with the ravens.
He's described very similarly to the dead wights, with his black hands, and I am inclined to believe he is a wight that has somehow retained or regained sentience, over having been resurrected from death in a way similar to Beric. (Insofar as there are material differences between the two ways, which we don't know.)
"They'll kill him." "No. They killed him long ago.  (ADWD, Bran II)
This exchange (referring to the wights in the snow outside the weirwood cave) suggests to me he died at the hands of wights or those who control them. He may have lost his life as long ago as Bloodraven's disappearance, or earlier or later than that. I have no theory about what or who exactly kept him from being mentally enslaved.
It has been implied that the wights retain memories, that they are not entirely empty puppets, which places them in an interesting parallel to other forms of mental enslavement: the Unsullied, the warg victims, even Theon to a point. The “faces” of the Faceless Men also come to mind, which retain memories of those who wore them. Forever trapped and relived by those who wear them. There is an affront to human dignity in turning persons into objects, no matter which shape that takes.
I like to think that Coldhands as a sentient wight is meant to suggest that there is a theme of captivity and release at play with the wights as well - rather than of the need to destroy hostile corpses entirely stripped of personhood. It’s not about mass destruction but about a dignified liberation, even if that liberation is into true death.

Paul's hands were coal, his face was milk, his eyes shone a bitter blue. Hoarfrost whitened his beard, and on one shoulder hunched a raven, pecking at his cheek, eating the dead white flesh.
Samwell III - 644
Sam and Gilly’s short night of safety ends with A ZOMBIFIED Small Paul breaking down the longhouse door. I was looking forward to the scene. It's a nice mixture of comedy and terror. The terror being the last person you would ever want to be turned into a wight Is Small Paul. (OK, maybe the Mountain, but you he's already a nightmare) the humor comes in that, despite how terrifying this is, Mormont's Raven is still happily having a little snack. It was fun just leaning back and doing this picture. Perhaps it might’ve worked better as a portrait, but I like the context.
Beyond that, the two things wrong with it are, first, it’s hard to do a good Raven in this black-and-white format, and, second, I only realized Paul wasn't wearing gloves until after I finished this.
