An injured/exhausted/weakened/semiconscious, for whatever reason unable to offer physical cooperation, character being gently manhandled into an upright position by a companion who cradles their head and shoulders pressed to the companion's chest and spreads a hand over the back of their head, fingers tangled through their hair and arm curling protectively 'round. The character being held, already largely limp, leans even more heavily into the warm fabric of their companion's shirt, the familar scent, the rumble of their voice, and the small comfort of the hand in their hair.

this week on obscure whumpy books
One of my favorite books I grew up with was a 1-volume compilation of 4 books in a series called "Journey Through The Night" by Anne de Vries. This series, released in 1951 (and translated from Dutch), followed the story of two brothers (and their family) in the Netherlands through WWII and the Nazis' invasion of Holland.
The primary narrator is the older brother John who grows from a teenager to a man in a short period during/around when their home is torched and family scattered.
John and Fritz both eventually join the Dutch Resistance, and the series details the struggles of day-to-day living in a Nazi-occupied country.
At one point John is part of a close-knit Resistance group and one of their members is shot and arrested by the S.S.; the team comes together to break into the hospital and save their friend. The run is successful, and the group speeds away to safety in their station wagon. John is the getaway driver who celebrates the win with everyone else, but he begins to feel nauseous. Crediting this and the lightheadedness to adrenaline, he persists in driving the rest of the way to the safe house. At the destination, the car bumps into a flowerbed and John passes out at the wheel. When he comes to, he learns that, in the escape, he was shot in the back through the seat and nobody noticed—including him.
This is just one of many such instances. Would recommend the book because it's also just really good and very educational and exciting.
That's it lol nobody's reading this I just had to put it down somewhere

Sorry for submitting an ask related to The Discourse. This ended up being such a wall of text that "i ain't reading all that" might be the only appropriate response. I feel like very often when there's some internet outrage directed at a person (like mass reporting or sending annoying asks) it's a direct consequence of a fucked up game of telephone where someone is reduced to one thing they once posted, and that thing in question is gradually stripped of any nuance to the point of being spread around as something else entirely. I have not been following your blog closely in the last couple of weeks, but from everything that I have seen recently it seems that people are going through this chain of misinformation (or willful malicious ignorance, or stupidity. we may never know): This user wrote a story which included depictions of CSA! -> This user makes pornographic content of fictional children and gets sexual gratification from seeing that content! -> This user makes and enjoys actual, real-life CP! The jump from the first step to the second is already an insane leap, but from what I have seen this is how internet hate mobs snowball into successfully mass reporting or bullying people off of social media. Just going with the least charitable imagining of the step they're currently at so they can arrive at the next one, squeezing a person into a "that guy who did that thing" box, as if there is no other context surrounding said thing. What bothers me about this especially, is that there might be an interesting (though difficult and draining) conversation about the first step of that chain, which as far as I know, is true - but it gets buried under braindead criticisms of either things you haven't done (like every subsequent step in the chain) or something that's boring and irrelevant (like "but what if someone ignores every content warning imaginable and reads it anyway and gets traumatized!!!"). Not all portrayals of CSA are created equal. Like, example, loli hentai is literally just porn made for pedophiles as the target audience. Obviously, that's super far off from what you're creating but I think it gives rise to a valid question: given a piece of media depicting CSA of fictional characters, where is the line between that piece of media being a worthwhile exploration of the topic and it being just CP with fictional kids as a proxy for real ones? Authorial intent? Whether someone ends up getting off to it? I have no fucking clue if I'm being honest. And I'm sure as all hell that tumblr also doesn't, so they just default to "it's all bad and irresponsible, delete your blog".
no need to apologize, anon. but i am sorry for responding with an answer you may not like, and i understand if you don't want to interact or associate with me now.
i think sometimes yes, it is a lot of misunderstandings and miscommunications. but i am the second step. i do get sexual gratification from explicit fictional content (drawn or written) with fictional minors.
the thing that makes it complicated, and apparently too complex for some people to understand, is that the sexual gratification is not because of a sexual attraction to children.
for me, it's about what fictional children represent. it's about twisting that symbolic innocence into something disturbing. it's about using the undeveloped psychology of a fictional child and the naive trust in order to craft more twisted, manipulative scenarios. it's about putting a symbol of youth and purity in adult situations and playing with those elements, seeing if that youth and purity stays or if it's destroyed by the trauma. if there even IS trauma -- not all of the content i make will be angsty or whumpy, because sometimes it's still just as delightfully disturbing to make it Simple and Sweet.
once upon a time, my dad did something incredibly traumatizing to me as a kid, and it's a trauma that i cope with through Logan all the time. it's literally the 'David using his son as his wife' trauma.
i've had a lot of time to do some self-reflection ever since then and i've realized now, that night changed me. it changed how i think. it made me drawn to explicit fiction with fictional minors, specifically paired with or abused in some way by adults. that wasn't just something i always felt.
you're absolutely right about things snowballing, and i do think at this point, people think that they can just 'cancel' anyone they don't like. and i absolutely agree that not all portrayals of explicit content with fictional minors are made equal.
but i don't think loli hentai, or any animated medium with fictional minors, is just for pedos. i think it can be CONSUMED by pedos (like anything), but like…you can find plenty of adjacent things on any porn site. underage kink, ageplay, daddy's little girl, mommy's little boy -- there is a kink for every genre in that category, and i don't think getting sexual gratification from it makes you a pedo.
the icky morally gray area that people tend to avoid is that fiction cannot, and should not, be judged by intent. fictional CP could range from anywhere on a scale of 'artfully written story about abuse' to 'totally obscene PWP'. and ultimately, it just comes down to whether you want to engage with it, and whether you can still value a person as a person knowing that they might get off to something that gives you the creeps.

20 questions for fic writers!
Ooo, this look fun! Thanks for the tags, @lumosatnight (x) and @anaxandria-writes (x) ! This is going to be interesting since I've only started writing again a few years ago, so I'll do what I can to make this writing-centric. This is also probably going to be rambly AF, so you've been warned. And onwards!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
118 (39 are fics, and the rest is all art). That number will change because it's spooky season, and there are definitely some fun things being posted for that very soon.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
91,266, but if you exclude a couple of collabs where I only provided art, then it's down to 68,276. I have a few works that are hidden and haven't been "officially" released yet because these are the WIP text fics I've talked about before, and they need more TLC!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Harry Potter (31)
Teen Wolf (8)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Little did I know [HP: Perciver, T, 2.5k]
There's a guiding light [HP: Perciver, G, 1.5k]
Love me like that [HP: Perciver, T, 2.5k]
Help Me Out [TW: Sterek, E, 3.3k]
It's Enough For Now [TW: Sterek, G, 300 words w/ art]
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
You know what's funny? I had to take a break from answering for quite a while, and I just started replying back to comments to most recent works yesterday. So, progress! I really do want to show some appreciation to folks who have read and viewed my work, especially across multiple fandoms and ships over the last couple of months. The multi-fandom life is a tricky one to balance, but I'm hoping I can reply to a batch here or there when I have a chance to eventually get caught up with the backlog. If I haven't replied back yet, please note that I have read your lovely comment, but I just haven't had a chance to string together some words to say thank you! I cherish each and every comment I get, especially if I've made someone smile or their day a little brighter with my creations.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I've actually been in a whumpy phase lately, but I posted up The Walls Came Crashing Down (TW: Sterek, T, 4,242 words) maybe a couple of weeks ago because it's a Bloody Mary fic, and there was a near-death experience included. There's also so many terrible feels, crying and trauma after that happens. It's hopeful but yeah. I've been wanting make something like this for a long time, so I'm glad I finally did because it was such a fun and challenging fic to write (while keeping it at that exact word count :P).
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Navy and Gold (HP: Perciver, G, 900 words) for Cruel Summer Fic fest, because I was given a song that had a lot of fluffy family vibes, and that's usually what I don't write? But I turned it into a wedding ficlet, and I think I surprised myself because it came out really well. Especially in such few words!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I've gotten some weird comments on both fic and art. More of the kind where someone wanted or expected a certain thing, or they were questioning that something was missing. Anyway, some friends have defended my honour or else tell me that those commenters weren't worth it, so I'm glad to have that kind of support!
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Once upon a time I did not write PWPs. Ever since I came out of writing hibernation, PWPs have definitely slipped in. That's how I actually started writing more when I challenged myself to write drabbles for a smut workshop for Kinkuary. Now, I love writing sexy and kinky microfics and drabbles because they're short, quick and punchy. I've recently graduated to writing a couple of one shots (and heyyy, I'm actually working on a couple for Kinktober as we speak ;D). Kinkuary and Kinktober are usually my inspirations to get things written out anyway, but I'm open to other challenges too. There's a reason why A Study in Kink exists as an HP fic and art series. At this rate, I may need to make a new series for Sterek Sexy Stories. The amount of Sterek smut ideas I have kicking around in WIPs rn is kinda insane. But also, porn with feelings. <333
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not in the traditional sense. The most I've done is add in fandom references into a fic. So for Teen Wolf, I've been adding in little elements from Supernatural, especially if I want to bring a certain type of lore or big bad into the scene. But that's it.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Thankfully, I haven't. Then again, I've only written short things these past few years (and I'm more concerned about art theft, considering how much of my art is out in the world).
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, I have not!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, I have! @crazybutgood and I got to know each other when we were paired up last year for the Owlery Exchange: To Days to Come and wrote I Just Want You To Know (Drarry, T, 3.5k) together. Epistolary fics are awesome btw! My Harry had a lot of fun bantering and bonding with her Draco, and I love how we didn't even know we were writing to each other until partners were revealed, and it was time for betaing and editing. That's how we became fast friends, which was totally meant to be! :D
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
That's just...I like a lot of ships, okay? I'm a multi-shipper and a multi-fandomer, so that's a tough question!! Hang on tight...this is going to be a long ass explanation. I'm not going to rank them, but I'll list three ships that have impacted my life in a huge way. I'll start with Sterek, because I've only gotten to know them for a little over a year. But Sterek was a blessing to discover at such a shitty time. Literally one year ago, I felt burnt out, like I was losing my muse, and I was recovering from COVID. Everything in RL kind of sucked. But when I got curious and started reading Sterek fics late one night, I was sold. Sterek helped me pause and get to know myself again as a creator, reader and a human. I really needed that, so the timing couldn't have been any better. I latched on to Sterek quickly and tightly because I see some of Stiles' and Derek's traits in me. They're also complicated and deserve Nice Things, and I can relate so, so much. That's why it's been easy to make art and fic for them. Their potential is endless because Sterek made my love for supernatural and spooky things deeper. Every time I write or draw for them, I can do it with ease and clarity. Everything just comes together and works. And it's so satisfying! Perciver is a rare pair I owe so much to. They're the ship that gave me the confidence to write again and they changed the way I currently draw. I think drawing Percy and Oliver helped me understand them as characters, and that translated into writing because I already had visuals. I know them in and out, and I made the fic series, Where do we go from here? because I believed in them. I wanted to share stories that haven't been told yet, but I wanted them to be real. And the fact I've figured out how to bring Perciver to life through art and fic has an amazing journey. They've given me the practice I needed to improve my crafts. It's because of Perciver that I've become a better artist and writer because I finally found my groove. And gosh, it's nice to have a well-established style. I will love these boys forever because they may be opposites but gods, do they go so well together. They get each other, they're each other's rocks, and it's beautiful. Of course, Drarry was my first ship I fell in love with. I still love them to pieces, and it's because of these two that I learned how to write and draw in the first place. I've been able to make some amazing friendships with other folks because of these two, and I cherish that a lot. Also, Drarry was why I entered fandom and the fest scene, and why I've stuck around for so long. What the creators in this community have made year after year is immaculate. And all the fics I've binged over the years got me through some of the hardest times of my life, especially when I was dealing with family issues, school and just growing up. I cannot imagine what life would have been like without Drarry, tbh. I think of Drarry as two sides of the same coin, and their banter and their snark and their complexities make it so they learn to understand each other. It's inevitable why they're drawn and will always be drawn to each other.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I don't want to say never, but more like when. I've mentioned way back in other posts that there are 2 text fics WIPs that have been kicking around, but since I have sooo much I need to rewrite and recode for each one, I have no idea when I'll have time? One of them is slotted to be a 50k Sterek fic with texting, IG messages and a scrolling playlist and I have half of it written out. Let me tell ya, coding alone takes more time than the writing. The other fic is a sequel to the above fic and has holidays vibes, and it still has the same coding setup, so yeah. I'll figure it out one day, I guess.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue is my fav and something I write out first because it shapes how the fic will read. It's how I develop voices, snark, banter and whatever else, and then I'll fill in the gaps with narrative, description and all that jazz. That's also how I end up getting the best ideas. The dialogue ends being my prompt to move the story along. I'm also a thorough researcher and like to check my facts before writing in little details. Just so I can have some perspective and so I have an idea how I want to explain something from a character's PoV. Also, it's super helpful to drop in little Easter eggs to shape things up and give a scene some context. Facts are fun. And I'm a nerd, but we all knew that. XD I've definitely gotten way better at showing vs. telling once I started writing again. I try to go for smooth or punchy if I can. It comes down to a lot of things like dialogue, selecting certain verbs and descriptors to explain a person's narrative (like what's going on in their mind), how those thoughts are broken up in multiple sentences and how those are punctuated. Those are the things that create beats and rhythms that keep the story going. And since I'm creative who also loves music and dancing, I'm all for that. I actually think I'm wired to think this way, so that's not a bad thing!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Extensive world building and making big plots that need a lot of ends tied up. I used to write longer fics that had all of this, and while I still have copies of these (not published on AO3 for reasons), they're not strong. Rereading things now, these stories could use improvements. It's easy to try to jam everything in one go, but that needs to be done strategically. And you know, sometime less is more. I also don't have a lot of patience to go crazy with intricate outlines (since I'm more of a pantser than a planner), and I've found that writing something that's super detailed ends up boxing me into a corner or else it's like dragging teeth to finish the thing. I think this is definitely related to my writing style having changed over time, which is not a bad thing! I just can't write like that anymore.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Yessss. I've done that with Love me like that! I also happen to know Scottish Gaelic, so I was able to drop words in pretty easily. I love the cultural sense another language adds to a fic because it shows more dimensions than just describing what someone looks like, where they're from, etc. I also like using a few words vs a long sentence. Names, or little sayings that hint at traditions or history are just nice touches. So if I do know a language and I know I can add in some words in correctly, I most certainly will!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter, specifically for Drarry (all of my older stuff is on LJ)
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Probably Feel You Breathing [TW: Sterek, E, 8.4k] because it was my 3rd attempt in writing a text fic, which ended up being a success. It's 100% texting, something I totally made for myself, but I'm really proud of it because I had a chance to write from alternating PoVs. Also, this somehow turned into porn with plot and feelings and had some minor world building included based on texts alone. I didn't think I could accomplish that, but I did!
Tagging (no pressure, this is just for funsies): @danpuff-ao3, @phdmama, @outtoshatter, @thistlecatfics, @phoebe-delia, @nanneramma, @theheadgirl, @raisesomehale, @thotpuppy, @bleepbloopbotz, @quackquackcey and anyone who wants to do this!

Whumpy asks!
3 ... What kind of whump do you absolutely refuse to write?
8 ... How many whumpy stories do you currently have published online?
12 ... What is one of the strangest things you have had to research for your whumpy writing?
Thank you for the ask! From this ask game.
3 ... What kind of whump do you absolutely refuse to write?
I will never write kink-leaning whump: pretty boys in rope bondage, kept as a pet, playing domestic with the kidnapped/bought guy. Just nope. It gives me nothing, it's not the kind of story I want to tell. I like my whump as part of a fantasy-flavored story, as brutal and gory violence, as angst and self-hate.
Other things that are highly unlikely:
Character death outside an AU
Sexual abuse of children
Teeth 😬
Honestly, non-fantasy has a pretty low chance. I need a bit of distance to enjoy it, and I generally prefer to write fantasy.
8 ... How many whumpy stories do you currently have published online?
7. They're all listed in my pinned post.
Thorns, Glass Shards, and Till Death are novel-length (100-150k words), while Second Chances, Nuisance, Undeserved and Fancy Boots are novella-length (around 45k each.)
And then there's a couple of one-shots or AU pieces floating around.
12 ... What is one of the strangest things you have had to research for your whumpy writing?
As I said in the other reply, in this community I don't consider any research regarding injuries or torture methods strange. So I looked up blood loss and dehydration, so what, don't we all?
I have several blind OCs. I write a fantasy world with some (planned) magic gadgets, and I turned on TalkBack on my phone, and, out of curiosity, a Braille Keyboard. There seems to be no way to disable the latter, so every time I enter text, I have a lil notification offering me to use one of three input methods—but if I select Braille, it tells me TalkBack needs to be on 😅

Hello! I was wondering if you might be willing to share some of the most pivotal literature and resources that you used in the process of making Blackout? I for one would be interested :)
Hi there!
I'll do my best to answer! Under a read more, because I'm terribly long-winded.
RESOURCES As far as resources go, you're welcome to check out this post, which gives a general list of the many places I went online to do much of my research. As mentioned, that list isn't complete. At some point, I'll definitely try to expand that list, but some of the information is a bit proprietary only in that some of my research has a bit to do with things that will happen in the sequel(s), and I would definitely like to maintain those mysteries for now.
Definitely of note is that I also traversed SubReddits and Quora posts as well—under the assumption that the posts/responses were in good faith. There's nothing better than delving into actual accounts of people in the situations that I depicted, although I definitely felt at times that I was infringing on something private. I suppose internet anonymity sort of alleviated a touch of guilt 😅.
LITERATURE As far as pivotal literature. Ehm . . . I barely read published fictional literature anymore. As in, up until five years ago, I had a ten-year dry spell where I hadn't touched a book for recreational purposes. The most recent books I've read in the last 5 or so years are audiobooks of classics, and it's been about 3 years since I've listened to any of them again. For Blackout, I downloaded/read a lot of journal studies or text books. I'm so ashamed, hah! In that vein, even the amount of fanfiction I've read over the years has gotten smaller and smaller; I literally just reread/re-listen to my favorite ones over and over again, even if they weren't the best written. I blame my hyper fixations.
I still want to create a mini 'suggested reading' list for CM fics (which will suspiciously be heavily Reid-centric and suspiciously whumpy), so I don't want to drop any Criminal Minds fics here yet. But on that, I did mention one in Chapter 16: Guilt endnotes, so you're welcome to read that CM fic.
Okay, yes, shut up me—sorry. Again, I'm not the best person to go to if you want a quick answer, hah! Here's one that is not Criminal Minds related that—well . . . the first book made me quite literally manic. Manic. If you're going through some mental stuff at the moment, I don't suggest you read it yet, because I was going through some things the first time I read it, and oof. Or, I dunno, if you're a glutton for pain (like me), go ahead and read it anyway. Back when I was still heavily on FFN, I wrote hundreds of thousands of words in reviews for this fic. I began creating a comic for it that I posted here on Tumblr (years and years ago—it still exists because I don't have the heart to delete the blog). In other words, I'm a die-hard fan of this series and will always, always recommend it to people, whether they're reading fandom blind or they're familiar with its source. I'm currently rereading the whole series again—for the umpteenth time. This fic has 100%—nay 300%—had a massive influence on my approach to writing, and if you read it I think you'll notice that.
I primarily access it now through AO3. The first book even has an amazing podfic. Here you go:
The Fallen by Engazed
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
I promise, you won't be disappointed.
Yes, good. I hope? I answered your question. I'm sorry for talking so darn much. Good day, good day.

Hello guys!!! I don't know if this is like common knowledge but hear me out for a bit.
You know when you look up that tag that YOU KNOW you put in a post but tumblr just DON'T find it? So...
All IDs in alt text
Tumblr media
this "search" part means tumblr is looking for posts with the word see around, not looking for tags. So you go there delete "search" and put "tagged" and there you are! All posts tagged with the word, in this example, "see" will show up.

Ok I just have some Thoughts tonight about my taste in whump, and uh, I wanted to talk about it a bit in the whump space rather than my poor friend's dm lol (hi!!)
I was wondering if anyone else is also like this, or if it's just me (details in the rest of this accidentally long post lol). If you have a moment spare, please leave your thoughts in the notes/tags ^-^
So, as I have mentioned maybe a couple of times before on this blog, probably not many times (idk), that I'm actually suuuuper super squeamish
As in,
I could cut my finger a bit and actually pass out, and have done before (from a mere prick to my thumb) ^-^'
There's the context, now back to the point
It took me a while to ever figure out that I was ever into whump despite liking many shows that are generally considered whumpy in this community, like Daredevil or various other superhero movies and shows and stuff. I was probably about 17 when I first figured out "whump" was the word from it (from Tumblr posts reposted to Pinterest), then it took a little while after that to seek it out (as I was still in school suffering)
But, most of what I'd watched that was whumpy were live action/thriller/sci-fi movies, which, don't get me wrong, are still likable and enojyable to me!
Just not all that whumpy
But as soon as I started watching anime of similar genres, well, that's where it got interesting (whumpy, lmao)
But I think tonight really pointed out to me that "yeah, yeah I was right about thinking my preference was for animated/drawn/written whump"
So, Back In The Day, when I was at highschool (years 7 (12yo's) to 12 (17yo's) btw, I was maybe 14/15 at the time...?), there was an anime club hosted by my Japanese language teachers. It was pretty cool, but somehow, they managed to get away with putting on a good chunk of Tokyo Goul
I don't know HOW, but they did lmao
And I thought it was a very neat anime
I was very invested in little Kaneki and found his suffering immensely entertaining (I looooove the turned "monster" (or creature) trope), so that first couple of episodes left an impression on me
Now, the fun thing was that the club was during one of the lunch breaks, so, if you didn't want to starve in fourth and fith periods, you needed to eat something while watching the anime
Cool!
Except, apparently, for most people while watching Tokyo Goul lmao, and that's understandable because it was Very Bloody and heavy on the screams ^-^
Surprisingly enough, I did not have an issue, and I mucnhed away on my bikkies and sammies peacefully watching Kaneki's shit get wrecked
Tonight though. Yeah, that was a time.
My parents are currently watching Mr. Mercedes (the Netflix adaption I believe), in the dining room together, so VAGUE SPOILERS FOR MR. MERCEDES AHEAD, because this involves it
It's dinner time, I'm also at the dining table watching idly while texting and eating dinner, and this poor poor lady dies of arsenic poisoning, very graphically
And it was just awful to see, genuinely sickening and it really, really made it tough to eat, I had to slow down because I was pretty fucking squicked out... very... Yeah I felt a bit sick in the stomach
I mean, props to the actors and actresses and all the special effects/makeup/props artists and everyone involved because it was incredibly convincing and well performed
But FUCK it was gruesome
And it made me remember how icky I can find some live action whump gif sets and stuff like that, and it's solidified in my mind as perhaps something to avoid
I remember this one gifset of a knife getting trailed across someone's skin, not cutting, but the way it caught set my skin absolutely crawling
Ah, it's a bit of a long read, but! Thanks if you got to the end!
But yeah, I'd love to know if it's just me, or if other people are like this ^-^' Because live action whump is very popular and I feel like everyone here likes it in some (whumpy) capacity lol

1 + 17 for the writer asks — thot-son-of-odin
1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting?
usually it's Arial 11 point font. it's the default but i dont really like writing in other fonts. i like Verdana too but don't use it much! i usually only switch it from Arial if i'm bored but sometimes i change it before proofreading too. i've tried writing in other fonts or doing the 'comic sans trick' but i really prefer Arial
17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.
currently i'm working on an excerpt for this insanely complicated AU idea. as in, this could easily be a long fic with several arcs, i however,, dont want to write it all so last week i started writing a little snippet of it instead. where it's at now i consider it "complete" but i'm adding some context so it's readable to everyone else that doesn't know the entire lore XD
fun fact, this AU has at least four different versions! i'm just a bit feral over this idea. the one i'm writing now is the third in this AU lol. i have a little document with notes/summaries for each of them because they're fun to think about even tho most of it wont get written. it's a fem thor AU and I think nearly every whump trope that could work for this AU has been considered-- poor thor has gotten whumped HARD.
it's not really mentioned in the fic (at least not this snippet), but thor is raised as a boy in early childhood. Odin changed his mind as thor develops what he considers feminine traits. in the first/original version, shortly after this decision loki is sent away to military camp and when he returns thor has completely changed and been taught by frigga how to behave as a "proper lady".
in another AU, loki stays/isnt sent off for some time. fun fact, i consider my most recent fic "my pillow holds the screams of me" a part of this AU ^^;
In AU #3, thor is the one that is sent away. she's sent off to a finishing school and comes back completely changed. yay bonus trauma for both of them :D
that is just some details that aren't mentioned in the WIP, but hopefully a bit more of the rest will actually make it into the snippet i'm writing XD and hopefully i will,, write more snippets for it. maybe. and i've also done a few whumpy drawings for this AU!! i might post them at some point lol

When two characters are injured, badly enough to be confined to bed, but they have to be kept together, in the same room or even the same bed, otherwise they'll wake up and go frantic trying to look for the other- calling out for them, struggling upright, crawling out of bed, staggering from the room; desperate to find the other and panicking to know they're alright- so if they're to get any rest in order to recover they need to be within sight and reach of each other, so when they wake up they're right there, able to reassure each other that they're alive and safe and healing.

Ooh, how bout 3 and 29 for the ao3 wrapped questions?
Answered 3!
29 - Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?
Cheating a little here and posting two just because they have hilariously different vibes that I think, collectively, really showcase some of my strengths as a writer -- I'm realizing with a lot of what I've posted this year and last year that one of the things that makes me stories distinct is a real blend of dark, heavy elements (often whumpy, always very hearfelt) and comedy
For the former category -- I still really love all the speeches from the resurrection scene at the end of Aurum Horizontale, but Keyleth's turned out especially poignant, I think, because it walked a very fine line calling attention to the irony of the whole AU concept without feeling too heavy-handed about it:
“Maybe I was just dumb,” she said. “Maybe I was… I was imagining things, when we talked. But I’ve never been very good with people, and ever since our first conversation it was so exciting, feeling like you and I just… clicked. Like we understood each other, even though we’re such totally different people. And I always thought… I always…” Giving a particularly loud, choked sob, Keyleth picked up one of Percy’s hands and held it for a moment, like a lifeline. It took a while for her to gather herself to continue. “I was probably just being stupid,” she said. “Like, how could I know? But sometimes, I found myself thinking that hey, in another universe or something, where I got to see you more than like, one night a week, and we could go get stupid levels of drunk together and I could hug you and where you weren’t stuck in a living nightmare, we could’ve been each other’s best friends. I think… I think I thought about that a little too much, honestly. About coming here, and freeing you, and getting to take you to my favorite shitty bars, or maybe even Zephrah someday. And maybe you don’t want that. Maybe that part was all in my head. But I guess… I guess I’m just not okay with living in a universe where I never get to find out, you know? It was always an “if,” and it’s still an “if,” but if I never find out for real… I’m going to live a long time, probably, and I don’t want to spend all that time wondering. I don’t want you to be gone.”
And as for the latter, comedic category all the chat sections of Several Witches Are Typing were a lot of fun to write -- I would never write a full chatfic, I think, but as an important element of a larger story where it thematically "fit" it was a very fun exercise in character voices to try to figure out how all the kids would text (Tragically, I failed to predict the wildly out-of left field nonsense that is Hunter's actual, canonical texting style, but I'm not even mad because it's funny and perfect)
Anyways, this was a favorite of those:

AI art, and a couple of thoughts
Awhile back, an artist/author I follow started playing around with digital art assistants.  They made it sound interesting enough that I tried Midjourney...and got a little hooked. (Examples below the cut.)
As a person who’s never had the patience or skill to Do Art, I find it overwhelmingly joyful to just...enter some words, and be given art in return?  It’s most likely not what I pictured, but that often makes it more fun.  I had fun in the beginning putting in abstract concepts, just to see what came back.  Two of my favorites were generated by simply putting in “evil hunger” and “icy rage”.
Evil Hunger:
Tumblr media
Icy Rage:
Tumblr media
At that time, Midjourney was...not good at rendering humans. You see, it works by taking all the art it has access to online, attempting to match keywords to prompts, putting that subset of the art in its little AI blender, and spitting out the result. It doesn’t know, for example, that humans typically have two eyes that look in the same direction. Early experiments gave me a lot of figures facing away from the camera in silhouette, which was good because the clearer ones usually came straight from the Uncanny Valley. I got human figures with one leg, and horses with six.
That was Midjourney version 3.  They’ve since come out with a version 4, which is much better at getting the proper number of physical features sorted. It still has a hard time with hands...but that’s a problem for all artists, from what I understand.
As you can read in the Discourse, if you’re so inclined, AI art can be Problematic. Is it stealing? Maybe. It’s a little ludicrous for me to input “icy rage” into a text box and claim the result is “my art.” There are thousands of real artists, living and dead, whose skill the AI is borrowing. That said, can we defend it as creative derivation? Artists (and writers, and most creatives) borrow from each other all the time. We use each others’ work as inspiration and let it drive our own creation. Isn’t that what’s happening here?
The question is, how much of the result is transforming others’ works, and how much is straight up copying? Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell.
For myself, I’ve got two rules. One is, I don’t use artists’ names in my prompts. A lot of people do, but to me, that’s where it crosses the line into plagiarism.  The other is...well, I’ll illustrate with something it gave me awhile back:
Tumblr media
I asked it for a “fire opal talisman” and it gave me this set of four. Look at the one in the lower right corner. It looks like the AI has picked up a signature from whatever art it was using as a reference. That makes me profoundly uncomfortable. So my second rule is, no matter how much I like a result, anything with a ghost signature/watermark is out.
Now, this is a whump blog, so of course I was curious about how it might do for that. The answer is...meh? Even though the current version is better at rendering people, it’s still not great. Many human figures end up looking cartoony. Also, Midjourney has a list of words that cannot be used as prompts, in order to prevent misuse. That’s definitely a good thing, but it means I can’t use “bruised” for example.
I did get a couple of interesting whumpy results, like when I asked it for a film-noir-ish wounded man in a trenchcoat:
Tumblr media
That’s not bad. I could use that as story inspo or illustration. It’s just that ultimately, I find that the more specific the result I want, the more difficult it is to wring that image out of the AI.
And one more thing
Since I’m posting this on Tumblr in November 2022, I’m contractually obligated to add this masterpiece I generated five minutes ago:
Tumblr media
(IYKYK and all that. The weirdness of the 3 and 4 are an AI artifact, but it amuses me to think that this might be the start of a dream sequence or hallucination where our MC imagines the clock’s numbers moving and changing.)

🚀🧪💌 - For the fic ask (was gonna send these last night and passed out instead a;ldkj;flkf)
Hfjdjdjxhjss s l e e p
🚀- Do you like to outline your fic first or create as you go?
Little bit of both! The first wall of text just happened in my phone notepad while I was 100% supposed to be putting books away, but when I got back to my pc I put together an outline cus frankly the last fic I got any distance into fell apart cus I wrote myself into a corner and I don't want that to happen again. That being said, the oneshot was a 3 hour manic episode that just sorta poofed into my head fully formed, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ bit of both! I think I prefer an outline though, for the sake of my sanity lol
🧪- do you research for your fics?
Er. Yes and no. Did I spend an ungodly amount of time pouring through literal actual medical journals that I have access to as a librarian to make sure I knew what the fuck i was talking about? Yes. Did i throw that information out the window later because it was inconvenient and fuck it they're both deities anyway? Also yes fjdjdksk i've gone over entirely too much in game stuff to make sure I'm not making up toooo too much, but I also have a tendency to throw accuracy into the wind for the sake of either simplicity or 'this is a bit handwavey but Vibes Harder'
💌- is there a favorite trope you like to write?
I was gonna say this is a hard one to answer because I just haven't written that much But-
There's a very Whumpy lean to everything I've written, finished or unfinished, and it frequently takes a sort of long term inevitability bend at some point. In the One fic I've posted (and abandoned since) Bakugo was going to recover, eventually, but he was going to have to figure out either how to be a hero without his eyes or ears, or find another purpose to strive towards. There's a pile of AAA in my notes about Fi, and how the master sword slowly rotting away over tens of thousands of years must have felt, when she hadn't been able to speak since the very first hero, when she'd been imprisoned inside this rusting breaking frigid metal. The oneshot is essentially a trauma flashback, the whole thing; and the big one is a fistful of excuses and headcanons for why the statues work the way they do, why the traveler can increase their stamina by making offerings to them, what effects having a massive part of yourself sealed away might have, where the energy to wield elements even comes from etc all balled up into a very specific kind of whump and my utter bullshit nonsense shenanigans to heal said specific whump fjdjdkdkk it's a whole mess
Tldr I like to hurt the characters I love, apparently :kermit scream:
Thank you for asking!! This is fun, i have more to say than I thought I would fjfjdk

New chapter!
Should I post the text here too or is it better to just stick with the ao3 link? I don't know. It gets a bit whumpy in places. What do people think?
