The BJD White Whale

In Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Captain Ahab went on a revenge quest against a white sperm whale (named Moby Dick) for biting his leg off in a prior voyage. This revenge quest ended up basically destroying good ol' Ahab.

BJD collectors talk all the time about "grails" - the dolls you want but may never find. Don't ever read much about them white whales, tho. The doll you were going to create, the character you were going to shell, the hybrid you planned, and years later, your plan still hasn't panned out. The mods were too difficult. The glue never adhered properly. The dye didn't take.

My white whale: a hybrid for this legit Fairyland Chic Line Lishe head with literally any legit body.

This bitch's head has caused me so much frustration and misery.

I picked a fight with a DOA mod over this bitch. I have spent an uncounted amount of money trying to find a body for this bitch. I have met some of the worst collectors in the BJD hobby over this bitch. ("They can't re-release this line, or my doll will go down in value, and that's just unacceptable." No. Your doll is gonna yellow, and down down down goes your value, kiddo.)

Sure, she doesn't look too bad on this Dollpamm Skinny(F01) body when she's got clothes on, but take them off or look at her sideways, and...

Neck flare!

Sure, the Doll Family H Xiao Chan 1/5 scale girl body is the right size, but it's totally the wrong look for a mature female head:

I've learned that doll-company provided measurements are totally unreliable: I purchased 2D Doll Cherry Tomato. According to the website, her measurements were almost perfect.

Got the doll. She was HUGE.

1/4 scale? More like 50 cm tweener.

Tried Dollshe 16F and 26F fashion-sized dolls. Shoulders were way too broad. Even tried a SugarBone body and a discontinued Allegorica Evelyn. No dice.

So when the dealer emailed me back and said Fairyland wasn't interested in rebooting the line without hundreds of customers, welp - this Captain Ahab went out and bought another body.

Huajing 1/4 special body. Like 2D Doll, the measurements should be perfect. I'm not worried about height - I had the head on a Ficondoll body, and I was good with the height.

If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, I am certifiable.

Concerning a previous remark.

In November of 2018, the Vocaloid and UTAU producer KIRA released the UTAU voicebanks Akarui Kouki and Akarui Hikari, created and voiced by him.

Each voicebank features a mascot character of the same name, with concept art provided by seica.

In the following days, as is the usual for such a momentous occasion, KIRA would receive several messages and comments on Twitter, to congratulate him on the release, including edits as well as drawings of these characters.

I crossed paths with one such message—a drawing of Akarui Hikari, with a peace sing on each hand, head tilted to the side, and with her tongue sticking out a bit, captioned "Queen for the gays", if memory serves.

I though "Oh, cute", gave it a like, and went on my way. I would never see the full drawing again.

Some time later—not sure when I started—I remembered the image and figured I ought to see it again. To my dismay, I could not find the tweet anywhere.

"Surely, it must still be somewhere!" — I thought, naively, as I typed the caption I remembered on Google.

No results.

"Okay, maybe it will show up on Twitter..." — It didn't.

"Just drop her name on Images, something gotta show up!" — Many things did, but not what I looked for.

"Did anyone upload it to a booru?" — No.

"Okay. Okay. There's no need to be lazy, I'll just read every single tweet by and to KIRA since the release date. It has to be there!" — It wasn't. But the effort was not wasted.

I was able to find many replies by KIRA to tweets that have since been deleted, or that belong to missing or suspended accounts, which may explain the disappearance. Unfortunately, not a single one of those replies appears to have been archived.

But. But! In an unrelated reply, I found an old screenshot of a tweet KIRA. In that screenshot, as the portrait of the accomplice, three parties that inadvertently conspired to my torment, in that frozen moment in time, there she was.

To this date, this highly compressed circle-cropped 135x135 ordinary collection of pixels has stood as the single proof of my sanity, the simplest marker of my ineptitude, and the sterling token of my regret.

At this point I'm not sure that I'll ever find it, that it can even be found.

Should I even want to find it?

To finally get to it and lose this strongest reminder of the transience of all things, that you should hang tight to all that you hold dear.

It is said that you are responsible, forever, for what you have tamed, but what about that which tames you?

Maybe if I just asked KIRA if he still has it and remembers who made it, but what then?

To hear a "Yes" and crystalize my incompetence for all eternity, or to hear a "No" and lose even this last speck of hope.

It's just another drawing. It's the most important image in my life.

Migaloo is an albino humpback whale that marine biologists have been following for some time. But now we think there’s a Migatoo!

This is Migaloo, an albino white whale who was first sighted off the east coast of Australia in 1991. Marine scientists and citizen scientists have been tracking his movements, and even succeeded in recording his singing! The last sighting of Migaloo was in 2020, leading many to believe he died.

July 28th, another white whale was spotted swimming along side their mother by photographer, Dylan Golden. He captured this footage with a drone he uses to track whale migrations. Not much is known about this Migatoo, but it is likely a very young calf (potentially days old) and it’s not confirmed that baby is albino.

Being a true albino means the organism lacks melanin, causing the animal to be completely white with reddish eyes. So far, all we know is that Migatoo is a small white whale. There have been other sightings of white humpback whales around the world but Migaloo was one of the few confirmed to be a true albino.

Someone said something about their Soul Doll Vito head possibly becoming their BJD "white whale," and so I figured I'd share:

In the center, on a Miracle Doll 68 cm muscular female body (white shirt, black pants), is the Soul Doll Vito Duke of Arhanian head. Oh, and the little doll to his/her right is an April Story Emma head on a Soul Doll Vito (old) female body.

I am fond of this hybrid and plan to keep it. Zhi Shen (the matching Miracle Doll head) was too small, so I put her on a smaller body.

Now if I could just remember where...
