My 2020 Fanworks Year In Review

Let’s start off by saying 2020 was... a year. :S But it was a weirdly productive year for me when it came to writing. I also learned how to do a better job in making GIFs (I think I’m doing better, anyway ;) ) and I made a few vids along the way. So, how about a recap? ;)

GIFs

I’d made a few GIFs before in the past but it was a sort of laborious process using Paintshop and Animation Shop. Now that neither of those work on my current computer, I’ve been looking for new ways to do graphics. After trying out a few free options, I’ve found a method that let’s me combine my vidding skills with GIFmaking and I’m having so much fun! :D Right now, I’m just focusing on trying to make clean GIFs with the occasional hopefully funny caption.

Yeah, this was the “Go big or... go bigger” year for me when it comes to fics. I wrote what could conservatively be called “a crap-ton” ;) number of fics, all for some variation of Snowells or another... except for the final one. *dramatic music* ;) A previous “big” year for me was 2016 with... 6 fics written. o_O

FANWORKS GOALS FOR 2021

Naturally, I hope I can keep improving when it comes to fics, vids and graphics. I have several vid ideas in progress for a couple different fandoms. Hopefully at least a few of them will eventually get done. ;)

I’m hoping to finish the last of my Snowells Kisses prompts in January, which includes “Unrequited” ch 2-4 (2 and 3 are done), “The Ice Dragon and the Winter Fox” (WIP) and the final prompt, hopefully fittingly titled “Epilogue.” I’m really excited for all of them and I hope anybody who reads will enjoy them. I’ve put a lot of thought and planning into each of them, so... *fingers crossed* that it shows! ;)

“Cupid’s Kiss” ch 2 is done, ch3 is in progress. “Haunted” ch 2- 5 is finished, the sequel “Split” is in progress (probably will be 4-5 chapters). They’ll both be finished before I start posting “Haunted” since it has an “Empire Strikes Back”-style ending. ;)

I really enjoyed dipping my toe into the Stargirl world and I have several more ideas in store for Jordan and Caitlin but want to finish everything else first. ;)

The Big Beast of ReverseSnowThawne aka “Try” aka the biggest fic I’ve ever written with the smallest title, lol, is still in progress. If it goes as projected, it might be 25 chapters? :S I’m not sure anybody is here for that but darn it, I still would like to get it done anyway! ;) It’s continuing to lumber along at the rear of the pack. Hopefully it will rumble across the finish line one of these days. ;) (These particular versions of Eowells, Caitlin and Mattobard exist very vividly to me, I don’t even know why. Mattobard!Eobard is a different version than any I’ve written so far and I really want y’all to get to meet him. :D )

Synopsis:

But the same law that condemns me may also save me. Ixia's food taster—chosen to ensure that the Commander's food is not poisoned—has died. And by law, the next prisoner who is scheduled to be executed—me—must be offered the position.

My Review:

This is one of those books I have been meaning to read for forever and while I enjoyed reading it for the most part, there was definitely a lot lacking that had me disappointed in many aspects of it. Despite that, I'm still interested in continuing the Yelena's story, though, so while there will be a lot of negatives in this review, it wasn't an entirely bad novel.

To begin with the plot itself is really interesting - lots of intrigue and mystery to keep me enticed. I will say the constant attacks on Yelena got to be a bit wearisome after a while, especially when it seemed like someone new was after her every other chapter. But I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline surrounding Brazell and the Commander, as well as Yelena's own personal forays into becoming more skilled in different areas.

I was also pretty pleased with the characters for the most part. Yelena is a feisty protagonist who actually stands up for herself in situations and actively makes the decision to learn how to defend herself (and other things). I love that she is intelligent and observant and while a lot of things seem to happen to her, she uses those situations and builds herself up because of and in spite of them. It showed well in her character growth over the course of the novel as she opened herself up to others and learned to trust people and herself again.

Now, for the negatives.

Right off the bat the writing was...awkward. There is an immediate "flashback" of sorts in the first pages which had a transition that just did not sit well with me. If I hadn't forced myself past it and continued on, I might have immediately stopped reading this book. There were several more "awkward" moments, especially towards the beginning, that had me cringing inwardly. One in particular was when Yelena reveals some of her past trauma to the reader by interrogating herself as a pretend nurse? It was just...weird.

Then there was the world-building. While there wasn't one huge info-dump at the beginning, there were several smaller ones scattered throughout that would just suddenly be inserted into the story whenever necessary. These were clinical explanations, a paragraph or two long, that did not really immerse me in the world but rather felt like parts taken from a textbook on the history of Ixia. I was glad when they stopped showing up as the story progressed because while they were necessary to explaining the world, they were unflattering to the actual story.

In conjunction with the world-building annoyances, there was the issue I had with adding the character Mogkan well after the halfway point. Supposedly this is an antagonist who was present for much of Yelena's torture and ends up playing a large role in the nefarious plans of Brazell, and yet he was not once mentioned before his appearance at the castle. It felt almost as if Maria V. Snyder was still making up some of the plot at this point and had only just figured out some of the villainy. I just wish he had been mentioned earlier whenever Reyad and Brazell came up. It just seemed so strange to have him suddenly appear and be so important without any prior mention.

Similarly, there was a character trait of Yelena's that was introduced without any afore-mentioned allusions to it - her acrobatics. All of a sudden, she was an acrobat. It would have been nicer to see her show some dexterity or think about it before actually saying it out loud. After that it was incorporated into her being like it should have been - in thoughts and movement - but no indication beforehand.

And then finally there is the relationship between Valek and Yelena. Yes, part of me gets their dynamic and sees how they work well together, the other part of me is still struggling with the distinct age difference between them. He is, what, 14-15 years older than her?? Um??? Like he was assassinating the king while she was just a child! [SPOILER] And then they had sex the first time they kissed at least I think it was sex it was very...metaphoric. But the real kicker was that THEY DID IT IN A DUNGEON COVERED IN STRAW AND RAT EXCREMENT AND WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE O_O. Nope. I get that there was a mood and some sense of urgency but holy hell no. [END SPOILER]

Like I said, while there are a lot of technical negatives to this book, the overal plot and the characters had me intrigued enough to keep going, and I think I will still continue with the next book. Hopefully now that most of the world building has been established and the characters have sort of fleshed themselves out, things will get better with the rest of the series.

So...

...I finished Halfway Home’s Draft 2.

Yaaaaay.

177 058 words this time, 21 chapters and 150 scenes.

No but actually, I’m proud! So let’s throw a celebratory gif because it’s worth one (also, have some free spooks along the way).

More deep tired thoughts under the cut!

This was a wild ride. Not as wild as Draft 1 (because nothing beats the thrill of a first draft imo), but... a Lot happened this past year as I rewrote my Mass Effect fanfiction about one Sad And Revolted Space Frog who discovers the joys and pains of sociopolitics, capitalism, militarism, and other things in -ism. I cut more than 100k words from Draft 1 to Draft 2 due to a very involved structural rework before I even started to redraft, and honestly? I think it paid off.

Nobody will be surprised when I say my 2020 wasn’t super easy, because who on this poor sweet Earth could claim to have had an easy 2020. I had worse! But given that’s not a contest at all, this is a thought of little comfort. Work has been rough on me this year, for reasons unrelated to quarantine and related to gamedev instead. Living abroad away from friends and family was also a challenge, and so was dealing with the whole thing while recovering from burnout. To be perfectly frank, I don’t have a ton of memories of what my drafting process looked like... at all. I don’t exactly recall how I managed to draft a full rewrite without being able to go out much. So I’ll stop, because brainfog and memory jamble is spooky and I don’t like it!

I’m looking forward to reread what I did, which I won’t do before the second part of november. I need my break, y’all. But from what I already reread in the past, I think I’ve done a solid job on the structure and most character arcs. The prose is more inconsistent; sometimes I had great streaks, sometimes it’s shaky and melodramatic (often is). But overall, I think the intense re-outline post Draft 1 did most of the heavy lifting structure-wise, which was the point of a rewrite. So good! Mission accomplished!

The point is: it’s done. Draft 2, that is.

What’s next now?

As I already said, first I rest. Then I will enter a revision phase that I’ve planned from december to late march of 2021. This will encompass some last tiny little developmental rewrites, mostly the first two chapters (Again, I know. I know.) and a couple of scenes here and there, as well as my first go at line edits! These changes will be cemented into a Draft 3, that will then be sent out to beta readers ( o_o ). After I collect Opinions, I will assess and do one last round of edits that will become Draft 4, also known as the final draft. That will be published.

So yeah, the road ahead is long and windy still, but most of the journey is behind me. While I do experience project fatigue for obvious reasons, I do believe I’m closing on the threshold of quality I want. Structurally, I think it’s ~mostly~ there, and I surprised myself with the quality of dialogue scenes. I’m a bit more worried about the prose. The line edit work intimidates me right now, but I’m also looking forward to dive into it and polish what’s already been done. I’ve never done that level of nitpicking on my writing before, and I’m curious to see how far I can push the craft.

1. Have you ever been out of the country? If so, where? Yup! I’m in Europe so it’s more common! I’ve been to Spain (Mallorca, Fuerteventura) and Disneyland Paris for holidays as a kid, and for work I’ve been to France (Lyon, Marseille), Netherlands (Noordwijk), Switzerland (Zurich) and USA (Hawai’i) three times :). The best was Hawaii by far, got to use the telescopes, and the islanders are genuinely lovely people!

2. Onions - yes or no? YES they’ll in most things I cook.

3. What’s the best kind of cookie? No contest, Sainsburys raspberry and white chocolate. BUT if you’re using the term cookie to mean any type of biscuit, I am rather partial to Viennese sandwiches.

4. What do you think draws you in to make you attach to a show or character? The greater the potential dorkiness the better. Guess that’s why I love Dragon Ball, they’re all so ridiculous. I’m not one for ‘badass’ characters.

5. What has made you smile today? Read lovely feedback on an arts I did - haven’t posted it yet but will with the next textbook chapter. I’m rather proud of it as it shows my progress, so was nice to hear from other people that they liked it!

6. Do you collect anything? Ah, no sorry! Cringey memories? Hehe!

7. Do you have a favorite (or funny) tumblr memory? Seeing my friend @jaalamadarav‘s BIOWARE news blog take off :) I get to point at them like YEAHHHH! They’re really committed and a lovely person.

8. What’s one thing you wish your parents had taught you earlier in life? How to drive at 17 (earliest age in UK). My Dad freaked out when I moved the car he didn’t want to teach me after, and I couldn’t afford lessons until mid-20s. I have my license and can drive fine, but not confident if there are other cars.

9. Do you live in the past, in the present, or for the future? Cringe about the past (learning not to), get excited about the future, and daydream of alternative presents aka stories aka DB let’s be real.

10. What’s a typical day like for you? 7:15 wake up and play with the buns, get ready, 8:30 leave to get to work for 9:30, be a scientist until 5:30, hour getting home again and spend the evening with the buns, my partner, drawing and writing. Sometimes go to the beach in the evening no matter the weather. I’ve been drawing every day since November, and now writing. It’s fun!

11. Do you have siblings? If yes, do you have any routines that you share or specific things you do together? If no, do you wish you did? I do! Younger sis! We watch Teamfourstar together when we meet up. Also recently found out that, even though we haven’t discussed music preferences other than our particular faves for basically eight years (she is the biggest fan of RHCP going), we like the same recent music O_O.

12. Have you ever seen a ghost? If yes, how? If no, do you believe in them? Nope, not seen one and I don’t believe in them, sorry. Taken too many physics classes and can’t see where ghosts would fit in. Whilst physics isn’t finished there’s some gaps that are closed :(. Though I am easily scared in the dark!

13. Where’s the coolest/greatest place you’ve ever been? Working at a telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawai’i. At night if your eyes adjust, you can just about read by the light of the stars alone. If I could upload one particular group of memories to the internet for people, it would be those. OH WAIT I DID (don’t watch the first two videos they’re awful, was just trying my hand at it LOL). Telescope tour you can’t actually get as public :)

14. Do you ship any rare pairs? If so, what pairing? Trunks x Mai and Goten x Marron (when adults, obvs). Marten is my only noncanon ship I guess, otherwise I roll with canon. I’m a little invested in Marten now for some mad reason (I blame @acelious) but if the characterisations diverge from my headcanons if Super goes beyond EoZ, I’ll just accept whatever they give there.

15. What’s your favorite smell? Wish I could say something sensible but probably petrol <_<;. Vanilla if I’m not risking killing brain cells? Haha!

16. If your leisure time is limited to just enough for one activity, do you choose to watch tv, play games, read, draw…? Apparently draw? Though textbook right now so drawing/writing, textbook counts as one thing I’m going to pretend :).

17. Is your hair naturally curly or straight? Tis wavey! I can straighten and curl it and it mostly stays. Humidity makes it wavey but it doesn’t look too bad.

18. Would your ideal dream home be in a city or rural area? Rural by the sea but with a train station :). I live in a seaside town now!

19. How many languages do you speak? To quote Bruce Willis, I only speak two languages - good English and bad English. I can speak Cockney Rhyming Slang! Didn’t even know half the words I used were CRS until I saw a list of them, haha!

20. What’s your favorite holiday? Camping! Haven’t done it in a while but would like to again!

21. What’s your favorite music genre? Well according to what I’m liking on Spotify at the moment it’s the New Wave/Synth Pop resurgence and Indie Pop (aka, Walk the Moon etc).

22. Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Introverted! I have been known to nap at parties when it gets too much. Is just my way. I get tired after a couple of hours, unless it’s with friends where we just ignore each other for an hour or so. New Questions! 1. What’s your favourite childhood memory? 2. You get one character to ride and die with from a fandom associated with the tagged blog. Who do you pick as a bestie and why? 3. If given a blockbuster budget and full creative control, what film/documentary would you make? 4. #TheLetterVN January Progress Report

BETA ACCESS NEWS

Chapter 3 (Zachary) will be released to all beta backers by this week or by next week maximum. We're about 80% done with the chapter, and it's just a matter of putting the remaining missing features in Unity and making final rounds of polish.

Zach's chapter is longer than Isabella's and Hannah's.

It will begin depending on the consequences of your decisions from Chapter 1, and it can end depending on the consequences of your decisions from Chapter 2.

Are you guys excited to see how those decision will affect the characters' journey?

DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS

On the development side, here's our report of what we've accomplished this past month. The year's off to a good start!

Writing

The writing department is still progressing slowly, and we've also met another timely delay with Chapter 7 because Luke's writer got really sick and needed to rest. It also doesn't help that we've been doing a lot of revisions for this particular chapter, because as mentioned in the previous updates, we're being extra strict with the finale's quality.

Nonetheless, we're doing our best to rally and finish both Chapters 6 and 7 sometime this February. We must.

Art

CGs - our lead artist is about 70% done with the final polish of Chapter 6 CGs. Meanwhile our CG artist has finished with all the rough colors of Chapter 7, and he's now moving forward with the epilogue CGs, as well as other miscellaneous art that we still need (i.e: item sprites for chapters 5,6,7).

Animation - we've finished all CG animations until Chapter 5. Since the CGs for Chapter 6 aren't done yet, while waiting, our animator moved on first to a different task...which we can't disclose at the moment because it's gonna be a huge surprise *v* Feel free to guess what it is, though! ;3 This is something we've been secretly working on for several months now... and we can't wait to show it to everyone!

Journal sketches/Achievement Icons/Item Sprites - Journal sketches for Chapter 3 are on the way, while achievement icons for Chapter 4 will be done as soon as I give the list of achievements to the artist. On the other hand, item sprites for the last 3 chapters will be started by next week. These art assets are fairly easy to do, so I'm not worried.

Programming

Apart from general bug fixing here and there, our programmers are slowly preparing for the mobile release of The Letter.

This means restructuring some features of our engine, but the most notable change we've made so far (internally) is by splitting the resources (assets) folder into multiple smaller bundles for easier downloading. Since this is a significant change to our engine, we're hoping we didn't mess up anything important. We'll know when we release Chapter 3. O_O

To our beta testers, please be extra vigilant when hunting bugs this time.

Music

Voice Acting

Major props to our talented casting director for accomplishing so much this month!

We started slow in the voice acting department last year, but we've picked up the pace! Chapter 3 is VA complete (apart from revisions), Chapter 4 is almost done, while all Rebecca lines for Chapter 5 are complete!

Our VA director Amber and everyone at Sound Cadence team has done such a marvelous job bringing all our characters to life! We can't wait to see everything come together! ❤

It's not as good as we had hoped it to be due to delays, but at least our overall progress wasn't super terrible! We're working hard everyday to improve the game, and we hope you all will be there to support us when we finally release The Letter to the world! :)

There was a lot of quiet still shots . I enjoy writing dialouge enough but visual emotion is more interesting to me.

i do think that shows through the comic throughout. not that the dialogue or other aspects are poor, mind you. but i do think the comic shines strongest when its relying on the visuals.

The comic has a really great art style that lends itself really well to action and dramatic scenes

yeah. although definitely the action. theres something in the movements that feels immensely fluid.

ironically though, i think my favorite scene is the end of #5. i enjoyed the emotional drama of jonny realizing that the world simply just isnt this easy to define black and white thing. and i think that just adds a good emotional layer that helps followup on the fact that #3 had that sense of moral grayness as well. i also just liked seeing jonny having his own little folders for villains. thats just kind of cute. practical but cute.

yes and im really enjoying the balance of the villains. like theres this great moral grayness to them where their motives and backstories are sympathetic. but i like that in this case it doesnt go too far. like the story keeps it clear that nah, theyre sympathetic and have dimension, but theyre 100% the villain and need to be stopped.

QUESTION 2. Of all the threads in the comic, there is one that stands above the rest: Who is the Big-Man? What do you think the Big-Man’s ultimate goal is? Is he up to something big, or is his goal simply self-profit? We’ve also seen many people are in the Big-Man’s pockets. Do you believe they’ll stay loyal, or will one of them eventually bail and squeal on the Big-Man? What do you think will happen if Jonny discovers the identity of one of these accomplices? What if it is someone he knows? Do you believe, at current, that Jonny would be able to beat the Big-Man? Or do you believe the Big-Man has something up his sleeve? QUESTION 3. Jonny would not be the superhero he is today without the help of the mysterious substance Jaintium crashing to Earth. What do you think Jaintium even is? Is it just an undiscovered element as the scientists believe, some sort of sentient, alien being, or a bit of both? Why did the Jaintium-related entity save Jonny? Was he just a convenient host, or was it a good will attempt to save Jonny’s life? Was the Jaintium crashing on Earth a coincidence, or is there something more to it? Whatever the being was, do you think it and Jonny will continue to work symbiotically? Or is there some dark foreshadowing in the fact we often see a mental embodiment of it goading Jonny into more extreme methods? Do you think Jonny will suffer more side effects, whether they are for better (i.e. new powers) or worse? Do you think others will discover the origin of Jonny’s powers (besides those that know), and if so, what do you think will happen to people’s perception of The J-Man?

actually that was a point i thought that was worthy of discussion. is the being using jonny as a host sapient and when we see those mental manifestations were seeing the creature? or is the creature not really sapient and those manifestations are simply a side effect of the joining that sort of splits jonny's mind into extremes?

QUESTION 4. Besides the bigger mysteries, there are many, many smaller mysteries that have been left unanswered. Who is the shadow person who appeared to help Jonny when Jonny was fighting Sergei? Why did they help Jonny, and how did they know about the tranquilizer? Who was the mysterious masked person Jonny met before getting distracted by Abe’s father’s kidnapping? What was the masked person up to? Have we seen the last of Heat-Wave, or will Heat-Wave come back to exact revenge on Jonny or someone else? What about any of the other villains we’ve seen? Do you expect we’ll see them again, or will they stay away for good? On a less superhero level, do you think Jonny will continue to be able to keep his secret superhero life secret? Who do you think might find out next, how, and what will it affect? Finally, what do you think will happen if Jonny’s dad finds out The J-Man is his son?

So, two things I want to get out there in the last 15 minutes or so. First of all, WOW, how much time has likely gone into this... because I followed the link of the old vs new fight with Sergei, and it looked REAL different. So, a lot of early stuff was drawn twice, I guess?

Yeah, I first made 6 issues in high school (2011-2012), but I didn't like the art and some story elements so I decided to remake them for the webcomic. #1-3 are those old comics redone.
