Wei Wuxian's complete disregard for Jiang Cheng's personhood compels me almost as much as Wen Ning treating him like an accessory person. Little brother shaped. Princess in a tower boy. Object man.

i think a lot about how...yllz era wei wuxian has a lot of room for eldritch horror. he's by definition a necromancer. but he killed a lot of wens by simply scaring them to death. he was so ruthless, unforgiving, and cruel to his enemies during this time. he even put wen chao through the painful torture known as lingchi. among other dark and horrendous things. like as bright as wei wuxian seems, it's easy to forget the actual horrors he has committed on other people.

What I love about Wei Wuxian is that it’s actually pretty hard to be simultaneously extremely stoic AND a whiny little pissbaby, but he manages to both at all times

Maybe a chengxian' meeting post-canon? Platonic or romantic, as you prefer
100 years later, I have given up and concussed Jiang Cheng in the name of love and yunmeng shuangjie reconciliation. You know, if it's not working, give it a smack!
-
This wasn’t precisely the way that he had imagined this reunion going, reflected Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng lay across his lap, blood smeared dark against his forehead, face illuminated by a streak of moonlight.
Not that he’d imagined seeing Jiang Cheng again. Well—not on purpose—sometimes it crossed his mind, when he saw Jin Ling out of the corner of his eye. Something about the posture was very like Jiang Cheng as a teenager, if a little more brash and impulsive. Jiang Cheng had always been more hesitant in public, aware of the eyes on him.
Anyway, it had occurred to him, mostly against his will, when he saw Jin Ling or he smelled the sword oil Jiang Cheng had favoured (still favoured?) or someone mentioned Lotus Pier. He’d flung it away each time for some future version of him to deal with. Now the future was here, and it sucked.
Wei Wuxian squinted at the ray of moonlight. At least they wouldn’t be suffocated. The section of the cave they were trapped in had at least one opening that went up to the outside world.
They had tracked a very strange yao back to the cave where it lived, him and Lan Zhan and the juniors, and crossed paths with a Jiang team led by Jiang Cheng himself following the same kind of yao. Unfortunately, it seemed that they lived in packs. The resulting fight had gone badly. An over-eager hit from Lan Jingyi had smashed one into the wall, and that had triggered a cave-in, and now Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian were alone in the dark together behind an enormous pile of rocks. On top of everything else, Jiang Cheng was unconscious, which Wei Wuxian really did not like.
The only thing he could think of to do was prop Jiang Cheng up in his lap and wait for him to come to. He didn’t know what Jiang Cheng would make of it when he woke up, but Wei Wuxian decided that he would cross that bridge when he came to it.
Jiang Cheng groaned and opened his eyes. “What happened?” he asked.
Wei Wuxian looked down at his face, and winced. Those pupils were not supposed to be different sizes.
“You took a hard hit to the head,” said Wei Wuxian, as cheerfully as he could. “Just stay still, will you? Rescue is on the way!”
He assumed, anyway. Lan Zhan wouldn’t just leave him here. He was very reliable like that.
“Rescue? Why the hell are we being rescued? What did we do this time?” complained Jiang Cheng. Something about his voice tugged at Wei Wuxian. It was less assertive that it usually was, tired, almost—whiny?
“You don’t remember?” said Wei Wuxian. This was bad. This was very bad. “There was a yao. Actually, there were quite a few yaos…”
Jiang Cheng let out a disapproving little huff. Distantly, Wei Wuxian noted that he had made no effort to get up from Wei Wuxian’s lap.
“If we’re late to dinner again, A-jie will be upset,” he mumbled.
Wei Wuxian froze. This was very bad indeed.

In a fight...right?
"You guys are all wrong!" Jingyi argues as he bites into a piece of chicken. "Hanguang-Jun is stronger. He's the strongest."
Ouyang Zizhen pours himself a cup of wine, "Senior Wei can use two types of cultivation. And the Ghost General. With all due respect, he solos."
"I gotta agree with Zizhen on this one." Jin Ling says as he helps himself to dessert, "Da-jiu may act like a whiny defenseless twink most of the time, but he's literally the Yiling Laozu. Like, I refuse to think some loser killed my parents."
"Jin Ling!"
"What. It's my trauma, I can joke about it."
"Anyways," Jingyi interjects, breaking the awkward moment, "What do you think, Sizhui?"
"That's like asking him which of his parents he loves more." Zizhen says as he smacks Jingyi with his newly acquired fan.
"It's alright, Zizhen, I think it's-"
"What're you guys arguing so loudly about?" Wei Wuxian asks as he and Lan Wangji finally arrive at the inn after a talk with the local cultivation sect. They've been gathering information for the night hunt the whole day, and they're finally tired enough to call it a night and relax.
"We're trying to decide who's stronger between you and Hanguang-Jun." Jingyi responds as he steals the pastry from Jin Ling's hand. "I think it's Hanguang-Jun."
"And me and Zizhen think it's you." Jin Ling adds, signaling for a waiter to bring more sweets. "What do you think?"
"Hm, well, we all here know how incredibly powerful our Hanguang-Jun is... but," and he smiles in a way that has Lan Wangji reaching for the wine, "I'm not so bad myself. I can take him."
Sizhui hands Lan Wangji the bottle and opens one for himself.
"In a fight? I bet that would be interesting to see." Jingyi says, but notices the sudden silence over everybody else at the table and the fact that both Hanguang-Jun and Lan Sizhui have taken a shot at the same time. "What? Senior Wei meant in a fight, obviously."
Wei Wuxian does a poor job hiding his laughter, Zizhen is so red he looks like a New Years' ornament, and Jin Ling is mumbling some 'why couldn't I have normal uncles'.
"Senior Wei, in a fight, right?"
"It is a fight...in a way..."
"Sizhui, pass me the bottle."

PROPAGANDA
Jonathan Sims
Half the fandom will vilify him and call him stupid or an irredeemable monster for his choices, which he made because he was a little sneaky. The other half will woobify and baby him and act like he had no agency or choice in his actions and every other character is to blame for the consequences.
The classic monster/human struggle of finding one's humanity after doing unimaginable harm, Jon Sims is often morally misinterpreted as being a "good" or "bad" person, instead of someone who has done good and bad things in his very human experience of having the world's most toxic workplace and being in his 20s.
Fandom constantly asserts he’s done nothing wrong and can do no wrong however the entire podcast is about how trauma fucks people up. 4th season of the show spends a lot of time on him having a crisis about the morality of feeding off people’s fear in a way that deeply hurts them. Fandom ignores this season apart from to talk about how mean the others characters were to him in it. Characters he’s hurt are described by the fandom as ‘whiny’, ‘self-serving’, ‘a tantruming child’. He has a female narrative foil with a story arc that mirrors his. She is hated by much of the fandom
Wei Wuxian
Sooo many people think he's God's Perfect Little Boy or something but like. This man killed. This man literally tortured someone to death. Was it due to trauma? Sure! Doesn't fucking make it okay! And it's not like he shows true remorse for it either. As much as I love Wei Wuxian, he's not exactly the example of morally good/okay. (Can't say he's evil either though. Like. Look at all the good he did and tried to do in his life.)
He tortured a guy but he also did his best and got a second chance with a new life

The tragic parallel (that has wrought havoc on my mind ever since) to the main relationship in every narrative: Qijiu 🤝 Xiyao 🤝 Beefleaf
Main dubiously evil character with a red and black color scheme who is extremely OP and must fall from a high place for tragic character growth: Luo Binghe 🤝 Wei Wuxian 🤝 Hua Cheng

****there is a deeper analysis about Nie huaisang’s role in mdzs overlapping with all three characters involved in the wind and water masters/black water arc read that post here.

wangxian rookies in showbiz au where newbie idol Wei Wuxian is on set of a commercial wearing a ridiculously uncomfortable outfit getting yelled at for dumb reasons by his incompetent agent while bottom-of-the-totem-pole production assistant Lan Wangji is being bossed around by the awful director
Except wwx isn't actually a newbie he was once popular child actor Wei Ying seen everywhere, the golden boy of the industry known for his upbeat personality and the smile constantly on his face.
That is until his final role when he was 13 where he played a dark jaded teenage psychopath in a psychological thriller and was forced to perform intensely emotional scenes without any counselor or anyone there to keep an eye on him (his manager at the time Madam Yu's focus was always her other children's careers, Wei Ying was just an extra way to make money you see). He even got badly injured on set, and now has an ugly burn scar above his heart from a poorly done fire stunt.
But the movie flops and things just keep getting worse from there...
It gets no attention from critics that is until former golden boy becomes the teen misfit all the gossip rags talk about, with constant cover stories showing him at 15 doing drugs and partying and eventually getting kicked out by his manager/aunt at 16. The narrative becomes clear that Wei Ying is a flop and another failed child star turned deplorable diva
He disappears for a few years, only ever coming up in a low budget TMZ special or some commentary youtuber's videos, but Lan Wangji never forgot him.
Lan Wangji had often worked with his uncle when he came on as a consultant on set and so was able to watch and admire Wei Ying from afar. He's especially fond of Wei Ying's role as the happy go lucky middle child on a popular sitcom role and his smaller movie roles where he played a genius child inventor and solved crimes alongside a precocious bunny rabbit.
So well Lan Wangji has always been a fan of him so he's shocked when the new idol on set of their cheap commercial stage looks so similar to Wei Ying.
But at the same time, they're not the same at all. While Wei Ying was known for being friendly and silly, Wei Wuxian is acting like a pompous and cocktail overly confident ass, flirting with the director and everyone else while making a show of whiny and being cutesy with hopes for more screentime.
It's very unnatural and there's a moment where LWJ thinks he must have been mistaken but there's a moment in between when he's running back and forth on the producer's order while balancing cups of coffee when he spots WWX sitting by himself, huddled in a corner of the soundstage deep in the shadows where no one else is around.
He's staring at the fingernails they've painted and stuck gaudy fake jewels on and fiddling with the ridiculous black demon wings he's wearing, as he picks at the layers of makeup and stickers they've put on his face. He's tugging on his red crop top, cut indecently short and revealing so much, as watery eyes dart back and forth in front him like he's worried someone important might see.
In general he doesn't seem anything like the person he was under those lights just minutes ago.
As lwj approaches he sees that actually wwx shoulders are shaking his hands are clenched into fists, his eyes shut tight so that his makeup doesn't run
Wei Wuxiann watches as the director is barking orders for someone to fix the set as another idol takes wwx's place and finishes the shoot. Apparently his acting wasn't "peppy enough" so they've replaced him with someone else
But this was his first gig in months, years actually but months since he tried to come back and for it to fail like this, so fast without anything to show for it is absolutely devastating. He'd tried so hard to give them what he thought he wanted, desperately hoping for his big break. Only to fail again.
What does he do? What can he say? Why does he even bother?
He's staring at the floor like it might have the answer to all his problems when a pair of white sneakers appear.
He tracks those sneakers up to meet the stonefaced stare of one of the PAs he's seen running around, the youngest one who's been doing the most menial tasks. He looks somewhat familiar but his face is impassive and wwx can't tell at all what he's thinking
The PA hands him a bottle of water that wwx takes with both hands, too taken aback to do much else. Then the PA slips his headset off and sits next to him, the black faux feathers of wwx's wings brushing against the PAs arms, though he doesn't seem to mind
And so they sat. Two nobodies hidden in the shadows of a forgotten corner in a busy studio, far from the reach of the shining spotlights and stage. Little by little, wwx finds it easier to control his breathing and stray sniffles.
Eventually, the PA starts taking off his hoodie, revealing a plain white t-shirt underneath. He reaches into his pocket and holds out a marker for wwx to take as he turns so his back is facing him.
When wwx, understandably confused, doesn't do anything, the PA glances over his broad shoulders and just says "Sign, please."
Wei Wuxian blinks waiting for the punchline but it never comes. He's not even on the roster for any boy group, just a trainee idol whose only fans are the diehards who follow the trainee circuit and his sister. And this guy doesn't seem like the former and he definitely isn't the latter.
But the PA just sits and waits, back facing wwx.
Eventually, almost mechanically, he signs his new autograph, the one where he uses the 2 W's to make a smile.
He asks for a name to make the signature out to, and the PA answers in a quiet hesitant voice that he can barely hear over all the background noise, "Lan Zhan."
That name sends a spark up his spine like it should be familiar but wwx can't figure out why. So he finishes his autographs with a star and a flourish. He hasn't gotten to test out the new signature yet. He thinks he likes it better than he'd expected.
Wei Wuxian beams up at him, heart beating a beautific beat against his ribcage and asks, "Why would you want a signature from a nobody like me?"
He means it as a teasing joke but the PA, Lan Zhan his brain corrects him, gives him a grave look that steals the breath from his lungs.
"You're not nobody, Wei Ying"
Lan Zhan takes the marker and slips his hoodie back on, covering the autograph with their two names side by side, and with a final nod he walks away, melting into the general chaos of the production floor.
It takes a long moment for Wei Wuxian to realize he'd never told the guy his real name.
(originally a threadfic here)

🔥 unpopular opinion on Wei Wuxian ??
Unpopular opinion on Wei Wuxian?
In the Cloud Recesses lecture arc, he’s having the time of his life in Gusu. He gets there and he’s having the time of his life and enjoying almost everything about it and only Jiang Cheng being a total whiny sad sack the entire time prevents him from telling us more about it.
Given more incentive and time to woo Lan Wangji, he might have never gone back to Lotus Pier again. That’s how much he likes it.

extremely hilarious to me how people will choose to ignore the actually funny and (kind of) wholesome relationship jiang cheng & wei wuxian had pre-sunshot campaign (ex; jc carrying a whiny wwx on his back during their cloud recesses era, wwx being willing to lose a limb or more for the jiangs & jc falling on him sobbing to stop it, etc). HOWEVER, madam yu was irritating in my eyes for the trauma she dealt to two kids (arguing that she loved her own son doesn't make it better, it makes it worse) and (unpopular opinion) i honestly dislike jin zixuan. jiang yanli was only given the patience of a saint to deal with marrying him after the shit she put up with bc she's a female character (ergo only there as a plot device) with endless buckets of wisdom and softheartedness.
i refuse to ask anonymously. on the extremely small chance that i may suffer for it at least i won't go down a coward.

Waking Up The Yiling Patriarch
In the Cloud Recesses
"Wei Ying, it's time to wake up." Lan Wangji said as he shook his husband's body gently. Instead of opening his eyes, Wei Wuxian turned his back to Lan Wangji.
"Aiya, it's so early. Let me sleep in a little bit." He grumbled while covering his yawn with his hand. Lan Wangji sighed, what shall he do with his lazy husband…
"Rule number 16, do not rise after 5AM."
Wei Wuxian turned around and hit his husband's chest. "Hangguang Jun is such a meanie… Give me one moment to wake up."
Lan Wangji stared blankly at his lover, knowing surely that he wasn't gonna wake up anytime soon. He watched as Wei Wuxian started to snore softly, yep definitely not getting up.
"Come, I'll prepare your bath water." Hangguang Jun tugged at his headband that was tied around his husband's wrist from the previous night's activity, then carried him to the bathroom.
Just a normal morning for both of them.
In Lotus Pier
Jiang Cheng slammed his brother's door open. "Wei Wuxian! I swear if you're still asleep-"
Disappointment washed over his face, soon replaced by anger. "It's seven in the morning, wake the hell up!" He yelled as he forcefully yanked Wei Wuxian's blanket off of him. "What would your husband think if he sees you lazing around like this?!"
"NO! No no no no!! I don't want to get up yet!!" The half-asleep Yiling Patriarch fought back by pulling his blanket away from Jiang Cheng, resulting in a blanket tug of war. "Besides, Lan Zhan already knows I like sleeping in!"
"AND YOU'RE PROUD OF THAT?!"
After a minute of hearing his brother whine, Jiang Cheng let the blanket go. "You whiny little-- Okay, that's it!" Jiang Cheng tossed the fabric to Wei Wuxian's face. "I give up. Do whatever you like!" He left the room with the stomps of his feet.
Without a care in the world, Wei Wuxian continued to snuggle back into his pillow as he heard Jiang Cheng screaming outside his room. Just as soon as he started to drift off to sleep, someone peeked into his room.
"Xianxian, it's nearing breakfast time."
Upon hearing his big sister's gentle voice, Wei Wuxian cracked open his eyelids slightly. "Ah shijie, can't I sleep in for a couple more hours?" He fake-yawned to emphasize his sleepiness.
"I'll eat all your portion of the food!" Jiang Cheng yelled from a distance. Hearing this, Wei Wuxian jolted up awake.
"No! No don't you dare!!" He yelled as he pounced at Jiang Cheng to stop him from getting his hands on his meal. The younger screamed at the action, resulting in them trying to pull each other's hair off.
Jiang Yanli hid her laughter with her sleeves. "Alright, settle down. You know naughty boys wouldn't get breakfast~~"
This sentence immediately got her brothers sat nicely in their chairs, waiting for their share of the meal.
"You're already adults, aren't you two ashamed of bickering every day?"
"He started it first shijie!" Both of the brothers said in unison while pointing at each other.
Thus, the breakfast was filled with laughter and constant arguments from the brothers.

"'The 'head of the family' said to drive him away?!' [Jin Ling] yelled. "Why didn't I hear anything about that?!" He had then turned to the master of the Bai family and said, 'You're from the Bai family? The ones who live ten kilometers west of the city? I got it. Go back now. Someone will go find you in a few days.'"
IDK why, but this reread I'm suddenly just like.... noticing Jin Ling? As a person? Sure, he's a bit whiny, but he really kinda blossoms into someone who wants to do the right thing.
As a Wei Wuxian stan I want to say it's his influence—he certainly takes an interest. But it could easily just be the experiences he's had.
Even early on, he frees his crazy uncle (who is might be WWX) from his angry uncle. He's pretty good about keeping the dog away from WWX. He starts off loathing WWX and WN, but struggles with his resentment after learning the whole story—plenty of people just double down no matter how irrational, but he actually wrestles with it. Channeling both parents at once, he tries to repair the relationship between WWX and JC while being super awkward and antagonistic about it. And in the extras, he channels his horrible grandfather by pushing someone down the stairs... but instead of an illegitimate son, it's a guard who rejected a merchant/civilian's request for aid (and subverted JL's authority).
And lest I forget, he goes from crying his eyes out to bawling out that Yao asshole:
"So what if I wanna cry?!" [Jin Ling] hollered. 'Who are you? Who do you think you are? What do you care if I cry?!' Sect Leader Yao had clearly not expected his lecture to be so thoroughly rebuffed, nor that he'd wind up being the one getting yelled at."
Good for you, Jin Ling.

So… I made myself start watching the Untamed despite the fact that the first few minutes of only the first damn episode kept leaving me frustrated af.
I'm on the episode 3 and I'm struggling. Why is this Wei Wuxian so annoying?! The original version was kinda more playful, kinda more acting on the situation and likeable despite being annoying, kinda less whiny and caring about small details. More open to the outside world rather than living a small life in his own self? If it makes sense.
Xiao Zhan seems to be a great actor (not like I've seen other shows with him so I can judge by only these few hours) but somehow I wanna slug his wwx and not in an affectionate way too.
Cartoon version never made me feel this way, I liked him quite alright. He is also annoying but in a funny endearing way.
Like do I not get something? Does anyone else feel this way? Not in the way "the show is not that great" and "they changed so much" but "I hate this version of wwx".

In Memory; In Truth chapter FOUR, wherein we expand our scope just a bit:
Nie Huaisang chuckles, now. His relationship with Wei-zhenjun is decidedly different. Where Mo Xuanyu has chosen to put his faith in the god and treats him accordingly, Nie-zongzhu still treats him like an old friend. They’re casual with each other. Familiar. Nie-zongzhu finds it amusing that Wei-zhenjun ascended, but not in a malicious way. He does not worship Wei Wuxian, but has been kind enough to make offerings regardless. A favor to a friend, he says they are, and a way for him to repay Wei-zhenjun with offerings and merits, if only a little. Yawning, Mo Xuanyu looks at Nie Huaisang. “It’s so early. They’re really supposed to be here, soon?” “Lan-er-gongzi wakes at sunrise,” Nie Huaisang says. “Wei-xiong doesn’t have to sleep. We need to eat breakfast same as them. They might as well get here early.” “You want an update as soon as possible, too,” Mo Xuanyu points out. Nie Huaisang looks at him, his smile shifting into something a bit more shrewd. The thing about Nie Huaisang is that he’s foppish and whiny, incompetent and absolutely unsuited to his position. The real thing about Nie Huaisang is that’s exactly what he wants you to think, and all of that covers a calculating mind and a frankly terrifying sense of determination and a willingness to justify the means with the end, regardless of what they are. Interestingly, he’s a lot like Wei-zhenjun in some ways.
New players on the scene!!! Yes, in this AU Mo Xuanyu lives! I've been having so much fun writing him. The Mo Xuanyu I created in my brain (because we have so little of him in canon) is fun and kind and determined and willing to fuck someone up in unsavory ways if that's what it takes.
There's some stuff I haven't written yet with him that I'm really looking forward to..... once I get through the scene I've been chewing on for the last few days. Progress is being made, though, and I'm almost at the end of draft number one.
Thanks to @thewalrus-said for helping me choose which bit of this chapter to post, though admittedly I did know this would likely be the final outcome once I sent it.
Thanks to all of you for reading, and I will HOPEFULLY have this weekend free of Moving Bullshit, but we'll see!

A thousand times, until the end of the world
Happy Valentine's Day to all who celebrate!
Life has been super busy for me and I have been unable to fulfill my promise of writing a series of drabbles until Valentine's Day - but WangXian are in love every day so I'll keep posting them even if it's after February 14th.
I wish you all love - no matter if it's romantic, platonic, for your family, your pets or your favorite piece of media.
This fic is very long, very cliche and I was very embarrassed writing it. I hope you enjoy it!
Wei Ying was definitely going to petition the government about this - it was so unfair and, he was quite sure, illegal, for him to have to be working on Valentine's Day instead of spending the day with Lan Zhan doing cute romantic things and also each other. If Christmas and New Year can be free days, so can Valentine's. How could it even be expected of him to focus on meetings and projects when all he wanted to do was be with the person he loved on the global day of love?!
"Stop being so pouty." Wen Qing flicked his forehead as he sulkily ate his lunch. "Don't you get to spend every single day with Lan Wangji?"
"You don't get it, Qing-jie!" He lamented, biting into his sandwich, "Today is special!"
"Corporations capitalizing on human emotion to make profits isn't special, Wei Wuxian."
An eye roll. "You're like the Grinch of February 14th. Once you get a girlfriend, you'll think otherwise! Everyone is like this on Valentine's."
"No, I'm pretty sure it's just you. And Lan Wangji."
---
All Wei Ying wanted to do was go home and cuddle his boyfriend. Since they'd both had long shifts and were tired, they would probably just spend the night in, order takeout and make love - which sounded heavenly to Wei Ying. He could already imagine himself latching onto Lan Zhan and being carried all the way into their-
The apartment was unpleasantly quiet, dark and empty. Wei Ying let out a frustrated groan. So much for his dream night. Did that stickler Lan Qiren really keep Lan Zhan overtime even on Valentine's? That bitter old man, of course he would! What would he know about love of all things? No wonder nobody married him!
But before Wei Ying could send Lan Zhan a whiny text about not being home, his eyes landed on a beautiful, red envelope, a rose on top of it as it rested on the kitchen counter.
Curious, Wei Ying opened it, and his features softened as his eyes scanned over the beautiful callugraphy:
My dearest and most beloved Wei Ying,
A limousine will be waiting for you in front of our apartment complex at 8pm sharp, and I have lovingly prepared a box for you to find on our bed with clothing and accessories I wish for you to wear. This is my first gift for you tonight, I can only hope it will be to your liking.
Fate has kept us apart for many years, cruel and unyielding to my longing and unquenched desire for you. I have spent endless, lonely days and the darkest of nights with only the bright, beautiful image of you to keep my misery at bay. Such has been my unbelievable luck to find you again and be granted the honor to love you and be loved by you in return, a gift from the gods to make up for my painful existence away from you.
I must ask you to forgive my temporary absence right now. Forgive me for not being there to kiss away your day's woes, for not welcoming you the way I so impatiently dream to do from the moment I leave our home in the morning. I am holding onto the thought that you will soon join me as tightly as I wish to be holding you. Please grant me a silver of your patience, and we will be soon reunited.
I will be waiting for you earnestly,
Forever yours,
L. Z.
Wei Ying's cheeks burned so red it felt as if his face had been set on fire - and if his heart beat any faster, he was quite sure it would break out of his ribcage and leap to wherever Lan Zhan was. Of course he would do something like this - so impossibly romantic but just as impossibly secretive about it. Wei Ying could only be glad that his gift had been ready in time - it had taken him weeks to make the perfect engagement ring to give Lan Zhan, carefully crafting it with the help of the best jewelers he could find.
With that knowledge in mind, he walked to their bedroom, smiling so wide all the way until he entered it and found it decorated with beautiful flowers - and red satin bedsheets on the mattress. Lan Zhan definitely pulled all the stops, didn't he?
A simple but rather large red box rested in the middle of the bed, with another rose on top. Wei Ying opened it and found a beautiful red cashmere shirt of incredibly good quality, a pair of black pants, a fine golden necklace with matching earrings and - Wei Ying chuckled audibly - a pair of very lacy black panties.
What could he do but try them on and send a picture?
---
The limousine had arrived at precisely 8pm - but Wei Ying had finished getting ready much quicker and had been so impatient that he waited in the lobby for 20 minutes - so he almost jumped into the luxurious car the moment it pulled up.
In the backseat, another red envelope and several gift bags awaited.
My most beloved,
I thank you for your patience once more, as my own is beginnig to fade into the familiar ache of missing you, my soul yearning for yours so earnestly. I could never express it into words how much I love you, the feelings you have awoken in me far beyond the measliness of human language.
I am often rendered speechless around you, bewitched by your incredible beauty, your genius and your admirable character. The compliments I am telling you, the words I am writing for you do not even come close to describing how immense my love and admiration for you are.
I have attempted to show you, as much as the modest means of mortal existence allow, how much I cherish you and how I am doing the very best I can to make you happy. Please accept these few gifts and the hours I have put into trying to find something worthy of being yours.
Forever yours,
L. Z.
Wei Ying couldn't help pressing the letter to his heart, overcome with emotion. He had known Lan Zhan loved him, had seen it and felt it in all the ways it could ever be seen and felt - but seeing it laid out into words made Wei Ying feel as if love had started coursing through his veins instead of bloodstream.
The gifts were so thoughtful Wei Ying could cry - from little trinkets and items he'd mentioned to Lan Zhan in passing, to various new electronic devices he needed (and sturdy cases and chargers for all of them), high quality jewelry, a new travel cup (how had Lan Zhan known he just broke his own that day?), even a new tea set just like the one Yanli had gifted Wei Ying but he lost when he moved from his own apartment into Lan Zhan's. Everything had a little note on it, something along the lines of "you liked this once when we were at the mall", "to replace your old accessories", "to make it easier for you to lay out your ideas" - there was so much love put into every detail.
And at the bottom of one of the bags, there was a thick little book. Another letter rested on its first page.
Every day I have spent with you has left me with such wonderful memories - and I have noted them all down, so I never forget them, no matter how much time passes and even when my memory may fail me in old age. This is my image of you, this is who and how you are to me - and if I am ever not there for you and the world feels like it has gone against you once more, please find comfort in this book and let it offer you proof that you will never be alone ever again.
There were somewhere around 400 pages of paragraphs - compliments, vivid descriptions of mundane moments (like making coffee together or grocery shopping) or various events (birthdays, anniversaries, holidays), waxing poetic on Wei Ying's everything. How he reacted to things, what he looked like, how it made Lan Zhan feel. Plans for the future, little dirty fantasies in elegant language, wishes for a life together forever.
One could never finish such a long literary piece as quickly as the driver had parked at the destination. The weight of the ring in Wei Ying's pocket only served to strengthen his resolve.
---
The moment the driver announced they'd arrived, Wei Ying leaped out of the car and ran into Lan Zhan's arms, kissing him with fervor. His passion was returned tenfold - Lan Zhan had really not lied about missing him, his lips so ravenous and needy.
With great reluctance, Lan Zhan ended their kiss, arms still holding his beloved tightly. "I love you."
"How could you do all these sweet, romantic things to me today, huh? I could have died, you know!" Wei Ying scolded, playful. "I love you too, by the way. Even if you're so mean to me!"
"Wei Ying deserves to feel loved. If I must bully him into it sometimes, I am willing to take responsibility after."
Wei Ying smiled, knowing and mischevios. "Oh, you will. Did you see the picture I sent you?"
"Mn."
He let a hand glide over the sharp contour of Lan Zhan's jawline, "Did you like it?"
"I will show you when we get home."
Wei Ying really wanted to pull him into a kiss again and not wait until they got home - but Lan Zhan took a disappointing step back.
"Dinner first."
"Aw, come on..."
"I have cooked your favorite. Also, I am sure you have only had one meal today and you need nutrients."
It was only then that did Wei Ying notice that a beautifully set table awaited them, surrounded by candles and mood lighting, two steaming dishes on top and two glasses of wine. The table had been strategically placed on the cliff overlooking the city so that the twinkling lights of the metropole would be visible.
"You really did think of everything, didn't you?" Wei Ying smiled, so fond and in love. "I feel like I'm in a fairytale romance. I always feel like that, to be honest, but this is..."
"Special."
And they toasted to that, before digging into the food. Lan Zhan had really outdone himself with it, and even the amount of spice was perfect - so much so that...
"You're really husband material, Lan Zhan." Wei Ying laughed as he took a sip of his drink. "You cook so well, you clean, you spoil me... I should really marry you already."
Lan Zhan didn't reply at first, but there was something in his eyes that Wei Ying couldn't quite place. "I would be honored to be Wei Ying's forever." he said, at last.
The admission made Wei Ying's entire body vibrate with excitement.
---
After dinner, Lan Zhan laid out a soft blanket so they could admire the city as they finished the wine. Lan Zhan hadn't had much, and Wei Ying had tried not to drink it all from nerves and excitement - so now they sat, reminscing, watching the landscape.
"This is where we first met, isn't it? You were so angry I disrupted your meditation that evening!" Wei Ying laughed, bumping shoulders with his lover. "I was quite sure you'd kick my ass down the mountain when I sat next to you!"
"Wei Ying has been... troubling from the start."
"What, did I haunt your teenage fantasies from the start?"
When Lan Zhan didn't answer and his ears pinked up in response, Wei Ying howled with laughter. "You're the best, you know that? If it's any consolation, I couldn't stop thinking of you either, even if I had no idea why. Thank God I wised up!"
A few beats of silence passed. Wei Ying played with the ring box in the pocket of his pants as he spoke. "You know, Lan Zhan, I think you're really great. In other words, I like you, I love you, I... I whatever you. It can only be you."
The honeyed pool of Lan Zhan's eyes glistened with emotion. "Wei Ying..."
And it was just at that moment that both of them produced two ring boxes, one light blue, the other crimson red.
They both laughed, the unshed tears falling from their eyes.
"Lan Zhan..."
"Wei Ying."
"Will you marry me?"
"Yes, a thousand times, until the end of the world."
Wei Ying carefully slid the ring over Lan Zhan's finger, trembling just a bit, but so grateful that it fit so well. It looked like it belonged there.
"Wei Ying..."
"Lan Zhan."
"Will you marry me?"
"Yes, a thousand times, until the end of the world."
The moment the ring rested on his finger, Wei Ying finally felt like the world fell in its rightful place.
And they kissed under the fireworks that burst out of nowhere.
