Just to let you know in order to prevent disappointment: the scene from the manga panel you've been posting isn't in the movie. The movie doesn't go that far.
Never in my life I wanted to commit such a heinous crime in history of human being.....🥲😭😭😭
Thank you for letting me know....I'm going to suffer alone in the dark corner of my room.......
i never really cared much about romantic pairings in stranger things - i admit that steve and nancy always gave me good vibes, but when nancy got together with jonathan i didn't think they will revisit her relationship with steve ever again, and i was ready to let them go. however, when they started hinting at them again this season, of course i bit in, and i can honestly say that i don't undrestand the hate that they are getting for it because what is happening between them makes perfect sense to me. and, despite the "popular" opinion, i don't think that them getting back together will reverse or ruin their character development. there are many things that could do that - having an affar for example - however, them giving their relationship a second chance isn't one of them. them retaining their growth and reigniting their romantic relationship aren't mutually exclusive. actually, they might work better the second time around because of the development that both of their characters went through.
when they were together in beginning of the show, steve and nancy liked each other. they genuinly liked each other. however, all this crazy stuff started happening around them and they visibly weren't in the same place, emotionally or mentally, to have a healthy and stable relationship. they broke up and went their separate ways and they grew as people. and when people grow, sometimes they grow apart and sometimes their growth brings them back together. honestly, simply because steve said once or twice over the course of the previous season that he's over nancy doesn't mean that he's over nancy. he tried to date, he tried to find love, however, something was always missing. and maybe, this season, he's realised that what's been missing is nancy. maybe, just maybe, it wasn't about being in a relationship for him, maybe it was about being in a relationship with her. maybe it is real and true, and maybe it is inside of his head because she is the person he associates with love. who knows? no one. and we won't know until they try to figure it out or until he finds someone else and discovers that nancy was only a symbol of love for him. we can prefer one or the other, but that doesn't mean that one makes more sense than the other if the storytelling supports only one of the options. and imo the storytelling is (so far) obviously going in the direction of steve truly still having feelings for nancy, making his peace with them and admitting them out loud. you can dislike it, however, it doesn't reverse his character development because him growing as a person isn't in clash with his feelings for her - actually, the two seem to be very much interlinked. if nancy was a toxic, unhealthy choice for him and he was still persuading her, that would ruin his character development, but she's not - she motivated him to question his behavior and choices and after all the reflection he has had, he still found her at the end of the road. steve never needed to stop loving nancy to grow, he needed to accept and prove that he can grow on his own. he doesn't need her to be his one reedemable quality anymore, he wants her to be his partner.
as for nancy, she can obviously feel that there is something wrong with jonathan and that there is something missing from their relationship. and this probably scares her, because she loves him, so she keeps listing all the reasons why she loves him and why they are together in the first place. unfortunately, having things in common with another person, recognising and appreciating their qualities, and loving them sometimes isn't enough to sustain a relationship. in any case, nancy is a truth seeker, and she can sense that jonathan isn't telling her the full truth. maybe he is afraid of telling her the truth because he doesn't think she would accept it, or maybe he is afraid of telling her the truth because he doesn't think that their relationship can survive long distance. and while jonathan's reasons for not wanting to go to college are noble and justified, nancy doesn't owe it to him to change her plans or to continue their long distance relationship if it doesn't make her comfortable or if she sees no future in it. lies might tear them apart, distance might tear them apart, or whatever happens next season might bring them closer together despite everything else that has occured this season. who knows? no one. the story goes on, and we shall see how it unravels.
this being said, the lengths people are willing to go to villinise steve over his speech are ridiculous. the truth is, steve didn't do anything wrong. the only thing he did was admit his feelings for her to her after being encouraged by two other characters and, at times, her own behavior. when he said those words, he didn't say we need to have exactly six kids and take a trip across the country every single summer no matter what and you have no say in it, which is apparently what some people heard. no, what he said was hey, we might not survive this and i would like you to know that you have motivated me to change for the better by simply being you so now, when i close my eyes at night and imagine my future, you are in it. he didn't try to kiss her or nor did he demand an answer. when her boyfriend showed up, he retreated and went to do volunteer work. he had no expectations from her - what she does with his confession is up to her. and how does nancy feel about it? we don't know. did i expect her to break up with jonathan at the spot? no. do i think it makes sense she ran to him, hugged him, and kissed him? yes. she loves him, no one is denying that. do i think there's a huge dent in their relationship? yes. so nancy may choose jonathan despite everything, she may choose to give steve another shot, or she may choose to drop both of them and go to college by herself. i have my preferences, but that doesn't mean that other options will make any less sense if the storyline that leads to them making those chices makes sense.
simply because steve wasn't right for nancy back then, doesn't mean he isn't right for her now. and simply because jonathan was right for nancy back then, doesn't mean he will be right for her forever. saying that it makes no sense to tear nancy and jonathan apart simply because they have already put so much effort into building them up is not an argument - people put an immense amount of effort into their relationships and more than often it still doesn't work out. both of these scenarios are true and they can make an equal amount of sense if the storyline that leads to them makes sense. however, we still didn't see the full story. what i know now is that nancy likes to make plans and that she has thoughts and ideas of her future - steve told her he wants a future with her, and jonathan is uncertain how he fits into the future she wants for herself. things can go either way really. i prefer steve as a choice because i like their energy better and i think they make a better duo, however, if she picks jonathan and it makes sense and is true to her character, good for her. if she chooses to remain single, all the power to her. that's the thing though, the writers don't owe us our preferences, they owe us to stay true to the characters we love and to tell a story that suits the character.
Hey you said something about the my hero academia creator being unhinged about sexism, do you mind explaining?
I tried to write like, a thorough explanation of this and it just got longer and longer and longer and I have not touched this series in actual years and yet I've still got all these receipts a;lkjk;lfasd.
So rather than trying to build the whole massive case, here's a pared-down version. It's normal to have sexism in media, and shounen manga especially. Everyone does it. The level and mode and intentionality and so forth all vary, but of course it's there.
What's not normal is to have lots of varied and interesting female characters with discernible inner lives, and on-page discussion of how sexism is systemic and unjust and holds them back in specific ways, and then also deliberately make consistent sexist writing decisions even where they don't arise naturally from the flow of the narrative.
Horikoshi is actively interested in gender and sexism, he's aware of them in a way you rarely see outside of the context of, you know, fighting sexism. He is hung up on the thorny issue of what women are worth and deserve and how power and respect ties into it. He genuinely wants, I think, to have Good Female Characters, and not be (seen as) A Sexist Guy!
But. He doesn't actually want to fight sexism. He displays a lot of woman-oriented anxieties, and one of the many churning paddlewheels in his head seems to be that he knows intellectually that morally sexism is bad, but emotionally he really feels like it ought to probably be at least partly correct.
There are so many things I could cite, and maybe I'll get into some of them later, but the crowning item that highlights how the pattern is 1) at least partly conscious and deliberate and 2) about Horikoshi's own weird hangups rather than simply cynical market play, is Mineta Minoru.
The writer has stated Mineta is his favorite character. Mineta is also designed to be hated--that is, he is a particularly elaborate instantiation of a character archetype normally deployed to soak up audience contempt and (by being gross and shameless and unattractive and 'unthreatening') make it possible to include a range of sexual gratification elements into the narrative that would compromise the main characters' reputations as heroic and deserving, if they were the actors.
Good Guys don't grope girls' tits and run away snickering in triumph, after all. Non-losers don't focus intense effort around successfully stealing someone's panties. Nice Girls don't let themselves be seen half-dressed. And so forth. You need an underwear gremlin for that. So, in anime and manga, longstanding though declining tradition of including such a gremlin, for authorial deniability.
Horikoshi definitely uses him straight for this purpose, looping in Kaminari as needed to make a bit work. And yet he has Feelings about the archetype itself.
The passages dedicated to the vindication of Mineta, then, and the author's statements about him, let us understand that Horikoshi identifies with the figure of the underwear gremlin. He understands the underwear gremlin as a defining exemplar of male sexuality, at least if you are not hot, and finds the attached contempt and hostility to be a dehumanizing attack on all uh.
Incels, basically.
It's not fair to write Mineta off just because he's unattractive and horny (and commits sexual harassment). Doesn't he have a mind? Doesn't he have dreams? Doesn't he have human potential?
So what's going on with Horikoshi and gender, as far as I can figure out, is that he knows damn well that women are people and are treated unjustly by sexist society, but however.
He also understands the institutions of sexism as something protecting him and people like him from life being nebulously yet definitively Worse, and therefore wants to see them upheld.
So you get this really bizarre handling of gender where obviously women's rights good and women cool, women can be Strong, and the compulsory sexualization imposed by the industry isn't them or the author, and so forth.
But also it's very important that in the world he controls, women never win anything important or Count too much, and that jokes at their expense that disrupt the internal logic of their characters are always fair game, that women asked about sexism on TV will promptly get into catfights amongst themselves, and they are understood always in terms of their sexual and romantic interests and value, and sexual assertiveness and failures to perform femininity well enough are used to code them as dangerous and irrational, and that the sexy costumes are requisite and will never be subverted or rebelled against--at most they might be circumnavigated via leaning into cute appeal.
And that Yaoyorozu Momo, who converts her body fat into physical objects, is being frivolous when she wants to use money to buy things instead (rather than as sensibly moderating her Quirk use) and is never encouraged to eat as much as possible at every opportunity to put on weight and even shown being embarrassed by hunger (even though Quirk overuse gives symptoms that suggest she's been stripping the lipids out of her cell walls or nervous system to keep fighting) and always, no matter how many Things she has made, has huge big round boobies.
when you mentioned in your tags that there was hardly any laughingstock i didn't believe you at first, but holy shit ur right. YOU AND @krasytoonz MADE ME INTO A LAUGHINGSTOCK BELIEVER. I WILL PAY TRIBUTE TO THESE SKRUNGLY FUCKERS SOON, MARK MY WORDS *shakes fist into the void*
no yeah Seriously though its just us out here, fighting for our lives in the fucking Trenches. in ten years someone is gonna use the word 'laughingstock' casually in conversation and im gonna have War Flashbacks
the Sully kids' reaction to Jake saying Spider "knew everything" breaks my heart.
they knew him better than anyone else, better than their parents. they knew his love for Eywa, for Pandora, for The People, for the clan, for their family. they knew he would never tell the RDA anything... not willingly at least.
they knew they were leaving because Spider would be tortured for information, he'd be forced to reveal their home, their plans, their numbers, their weaknesses. their brother would be tortured and they were being forced to leave him behind.
they knew they were being forced to find a new home, without their brother, because their dad knew he would be tortured.
I literally woke up in the middle of the night like God will dark rise is so fucking screwed. The line that’s like. “Everyone wanted to kill the Dark King.” What’s the part where he looks at Violet helplessly, haunted, almost pleading for mercy? But of course he reveals nothing of substance to anyone. Elizabeth is too young to understand but the reader knows what “Her relationship with that boy was…unnatural” can mean. Tying him to bedposts? Failing to strangle him? What else? Never not even once seeing beyond a mythological identity Will himself didn’t know he had? What did he think was the reason? That he was just intrinsically hateful? Of course he says nothing. Of course Violet can’t trust him- he’s given her nothing as painfully real as what she’s given him. So he gives her the sword hoping at least he can die at the hands of someone he loved, but even that doesn’t work out - she gives the sword to a Visander still furious at SARCEAN. The pattern continues; no one looks at Will, who vomits when he realizes what’s happened to James, Will who is much of a liar and killer and sneak as Elizabeth accuses but nonetheless wants to be different. Even when he doesn’t remember his own past. There’s no way out for him that doesn’t hurt. Hope this obsession passes soon given the one and a half years of waiting required for book 3
More late night thoughts on Hazbin Hotel Episode 5:
It’s kinda funny to me, how when episode 5 first dropped everyone in the Alastor tag were freaking out over how horrible a person he was to be treating Husk like that and that he and Valentino were exactly the same or that if this is how he treats Husk imagine how he treats his other friends/Nifty!
But my first thought, my gut reaction, was ALASTOR’S ON A LEASH?! And Wow, what a loss of control there pal.
Because Alastor’s a character who, at his core, likes to be in control. Of himself, his reactions, and the situations he finds himself in. He has a pathological need to always be smiling because it gives him a sense of control over himself and projects the idea to others that nothing bothers him and everything is always going his way.
So to lose that composure, that act so completely in front of Husk? Because of one little comment? And show exactly how much that little taunt had affected him?
That was the thing that stuck out to me. Not his treatment of Husk or their relationship. Because that was a little snippet into Alastor’s head, how he ticks, how he reacts, what sets him off.
It’s very very telling how afterwards he acts like nothing is wrong, like he hadn’t just threatened to tear Husk’s soul apart and broadcast his screams across hell. He even plays a little jaunty tune, forces levity into the situation, and pretends like there’s nothing wrong. It’s clear he’s clamping down on his emotions, and taking back control of the situation, of himself, by doing that. Like taking a deep breath after a sudden rush of intense uncontrolled emotion.
Because in a way it’s almost, embarrassing? To lose control like that, especially towards someone who’s soul he outright owns. Usually when people get on his nerves (and he thinks he can get away with it), he taunts them, mocks them, and treats them condescendingly until they take themselves out in anger, or the conversation shifts away from the topic that had him on edge. (And he tries that with Husk at first, except Husk is too perceptive and not afraid to call someone out on their bullshit.)
So for Alastor to feel like he’d lost control of the situation so much that he’d grasp at it by forcibly reminding Husk how he controls his soul is just, wow. Reminding himself of the control he has on someone else’s soul to forget he’s lost control of his own soul. Dude REALLY doesn’t have it all together as he’d like for others to believe.
Anyways, stream of consciousness thoughts. But all this to say that I’m like, 99% sure Alastor’s a little in over his head? With whatever the fucks going on with his “leash”. And he’s very desperately trying to pretend that Everything is Fine even when it’s Clearly Not.
Yeah and so the movie was 75% finished before it was completely shut down. What a loss to the community, and I can't imagine how heartbreaking it must've been for Nate and all the people working on it. Nimona (2023), later picked up and adapted by Netflix, is a phoenix risen from the ashes and it had to fight to be here despite the book's (and She-ra's!) prior success.
I'm still working on a master list of Arcosian biology, but have temporarily halted it due to how time consuming my work has been. Nonetheless, I want to throw out a few ideas I've come up with that I plan to apply to Cooler (or any Arcosian NPC that I write, for that matter):
Arcosian blood is blue. This is canon to the manga coloring when Freeza was shown bleeding, but not to the anime where it is red. I love the idea of their blood being blue since it's also unique to other alien blood, which tends to be purple, and for the pun of Arcosians being "cold-blooded" (or the Cold Clan being "blue blood" royalty).
An Arcosian bite is venomous. They have glands that will secrete toxins from their fangs, injecting their prey with a venom that causes varying degrees of paralysis. It is non-fatal, but its effects can range between temporary loss of certain motor functions to full-body paralysis for several hours, and was used back in Ancient Arcos as a means for hunting and subduing their prey. Nowadays, modern Arcosians find biting other sapient beings to be very "barbaric" and embarrassing. Nonetheless, when a rattlesnake is cornered...
There are male, female, and intersex Arcosians. The differences between the three are incredibly subtle to the non-Arcosian eye, which is why most of the universe believes their species are a "one-gendered", asexual race, similar to the Namekians. Male Arcosians tend to have a broader upper-body, thicker tails, and their natural coloring is vibrant, while female Arcosians tend to have wider hips, slimmer tails, and softer, more neutral coloring. Intersex Arcosian can have an assortment of features from either sex. Their genitals are sheathed, and they do not have breasts or nipples.
Arcosians have night vision. With their home world of Arcos being perpetually dark due to their solar system's star being too far for a typical day-and-night cycle, Arcosians have naturally evolved to have nocturnal vision in order to acclimate to their surrounding environment.
The average natural lifespan of an Arcosian is 500 years. Arcosians age very slowly when compared to most other species, and their generally ageing cycle has longer development than, lets say an Earthling or a Saiyan. Generally, their development goes like this:
- Egg: their parent will birth an egg which will take around 5 years to hatch
- Infant: from the moment they hatch to age 19
- Toddler: from the age of 20 to 39
- Juvenile: from age 40 to 59
- Adolescent: from age 60 to 99
- Young Adult: from age 100 to 199
- Middle-Aged Adult: from age 200 to 299
- Older Adult: from age 300 to 399
- Elderly: from age 400 and above
Part 1 - Part 2 - part 3 - part 4 - part 6 - part 7
The anime has come and since I have my shipping goggles on I am going to notice so much. This part will be less spoilery for anime onlys (tho if you want to see me talk about why I ship them and why they’re complementary this is not a good part to start with haha). Edit: After completing this part I can confirm it’s fully anime-onlys friendly and spoiler-free! For manga veterans though there are still some fun tidbits to be found, some recontextualisations and new extra content.
Holy shit guys they’re mirroring each other in the mural and reaching out to each other AND looking towards each other?!!!! Their pose is so striking and like perfectly align?! Which means it was so intentional and the staff wanted to highlight them (for an aesthetic and/or narrative purpose I’m sure but it happened)! I will never let this go we won so fucking hard let’s goooooo we are so back
Character foils!! Dynamic duo!!
Soulmates!!
In the opening at 1:16 he looks at her to see if she’s really going to it as the most critical of monster food & muster up courage to dig into it himself lmao… "Marcille doesn’t look too grossed out, she’s picky so this food must be fine then" Aka treating her as a poison taster/good cuisine judge lmao
Doodle from the animation director (source). I should translate it but I’m procrastinating on it so uh director’s brotp? Anyways they hanging out look at them :]
Laios is thinking to himself there (he’s the one saying the subs), and in the meantime Marcille and Chilchuck talk, likely figuring out the money situation. Strategizing duo back at it again not wasting a second
In the beginning of ep 1, when Marcille is rambling about where they could go to get food and what to grab, Chilchuck listens with a big smile & even closes his eyes as they walk. The implication is that he’s thinking about food, but man the scene hits different now that it’s voiced and I remember that indeed Chilchuck is closing his eyes to her voice and enjoying hearing her talk and ramble. I may be too far gone into the marchil pit
I feel like already they’ve come far from when Chilchuck dreaded being alone with Shuro and Marcille, waiting for the Toudens and Namari to arrive.
Ok this might actually be smth I’m gonna complain about but I feel like blushes have been drawn too vividly so far. Why does Chilchuck look like he’s confessing when he tells her she’s not a burden and he didn’t mean to make her feel that way. It almost comes across as "Woah she cares what I think?" 💀 The banter ensuing is of course also great
Ep 2 was an episode centered on them both that had the "Magic/Traps are my domain, don’t interfere!" parallel…
And now with ep 3 we’re back to them being haters together. That’s her emotional support man
In ep 4, it doesn’t show well with a screenshot but when Senshi talks about his unmanned vegetable stand with a treasure chest, while in the manga Marcille and Chilchuck both think the same thing, "That’s why that treasure chest akways had money in it…", but in the anime instead they literally finish each other’s thought. Talk about being on the same wavelength.
Ep 5 is a marchil goldmine actually, it showcases perfectly how much of a package deal they are lol. Always sticking close to each other. Glancing at each other during meals… They literally nod at each other before they try a bite to steel themselves. They exchange a serious thoughtful glance when Laios talks about Falin truly being gone atm. They argue a bit but they go right back to sitting right next to each other after the meal <3 My god I can’t deal with them they are so…… "Hate this bitch, not my friend" 3 secs later "Heyy bestie!!" Also he’s worried he brought her mood down after mentioning Falin. Made a post about ep 5 collecting even more screenshots.
Episode 6 my hero my beloved… Again I made a post about the ep collecting all my screenshots here, and even a clip! But this IS the marchil crumbs masterpost thus I must collect the major ones here as well. First of all, fun staff drawings for the first screening!
I already posted a screenshot from the trailer of when Chil had his head on his knees sitting next to her, but after seeing episode 5 I think it’s a fun and interesting trend to notice that they sit next to each other way unnecessarily close wow.
They continue to banter a ton, she continues to be very casual with touch, and they’re really cute! I love just how much Marcille blushed damn- It’s really cute too when you remember with the bicorn chapter that Chilchuck teases Marcille BECAUSE he enjoys getting a rise out of her, flustering her and seeing her reactions. I support the teasing -> laughing because her reaction is over the top all-Chilchuck economy. Also she apologizes for having let him go alone and be gone for so long by helping him with sewing his cowl… Cuties
She looked so happy when he opened up about his age!… And then seemed… Disappointed? When he "truly was just a kid". "So you really are a kid! How boring…" This implies that her intent was to tease him for funsies…
Ok lads we reached 30 pics see you next post, I’m gonna cover the "wake up clumsy head" manga-anime differences and we’re gonna go back to our usual spoilers yummy schedule.
Here’s Marcille cosplaying as a succubus in the newest Daydream Hour… She may not be a half-foot or have deep-set eyes but let’s be real I think he’d explode
Silly ways of communicating in games without using any sort of chat function are so important to me. Crouching up and down, jumping around in circles, spamming emotes or voicelines... It makes me feel like some sort of little bug and I love it. We are little critters and we are having fun together.
