After years and years of me asking, I've finally convinced my husband to watch Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. He's always had that "not gonna watch it bc it's so hyped up" thing with FMA (both 03 and Brotherhood). But I'm annoying, persistent, he has to spend the rest of his life with me, so he finally agreed!

The only things he knew about FMA were:

Ed doesn't have an arm and a leg;

the 7 deadly sins are villains;

Nina and Alexander;

Roy, Winry and Envy are popular in the fandom because he's seen tons of cosplays at cons throughout the years.

We're on ep.7 so far, and here are a few of his comments:

"There's nothing inside the armor??? THAT I didn't know."

"Wait, that little girl... The dog! NO, GET THEM OUT OF THIS HOUSE!"

Every time Shou Tucker was on screen: "Son of a bitch" :through gritted teeth:

"I like that the Nina incident happens so early on in Ed and Al's journey. It grounds them, gives them a new perspective."

On Scar: "I can't believe I've never seen cosplays of him. This is one badass dude who's not difficult to cosplay! Where are his fans?!"

On Riza: "She's the only sensible one in the whole bunch, isn't she?"

On Armstrong: "HE SPARKLES."

Him: makes a comment about the guy who wrote FMA. Me: "It's a woman". Him: "Ohh, that's why it's good."

He loves Pinako.

"I'll bet this isn't the last time Ed will go back home to fix his automail."

"I like seeing Al interact with small animals, bc he's like... 'They can feel things, and I can't.'" 😭😭😭

"Please tell me we're gonna see their father at some point. I feel like this is important."

S1 E43

Maximum Capacity

Okay so this entire episode just made me feel like....uncomfortable? Like the entire time I just kept feeling so off. Like my brain was going "okay this is way too weird, why do I feel like there's gonna be some horrifying plot twist?"

Then it fucking happened & I felt like a psychic. Like holy shit it wasn't just me, this episode was purposely uncomfortable on purpose & idk how the fuck they did that but WOW the entire episode made me feel so uneasy & it was legit for a reason.

Also ngl Amethyst....kinda just super fucked up to do that- Like I haven't LOVED Greg as a character so far (he's there but I mean him lying about his leg, good intentions or not, was a pretty shitty move & also he's just kinda not that great of a dad but I also understand that's literally the point so I'm not gonna just toss aside his character because I'm assuming he's supposed to get better as the show goes on. For now: I just kinda feel nothing strong towards him character wise), but oh my God this episode just made me feel so bad for the guy. Holy shit like this dude just misses his wife. Fuck. I'm surprised how much he kept his cool here. Like he didn't blow up at Amethyst or anything he was like super quick to forgive her despite the fact that he kinda would have been super justified in being upset for this. But I like that this was how it was done. No scene of them fighting or yelling, Amethyst just chooses to do something to make up for it without Greg having to lecture her. In that regard: it actually made her seem way more sincere. Like she had to make that choice via her own genuine remorse. I'm wording this badly I think but like I think that it made her seem like she really was trying to attone for it & that she really did regret what she did.

And honeslty after On The Run? With the knowledge that, knowing how severely fucked up Amethyst is mental health wise, yeah her lashing out at people like this? And saying/doing extremely shitty things because she's upset & she doesn't have the capacity to hold herself back & only realizes how badly she fucked up until its too late? Yeah as someone who has that kinda mental health shit as I said in my post about that episode?....yeah, that's pretty accurate tbh. In my experience that's something I can confirm does happen. So yeah it actually makes sense why she did something so extreme out of fucking nowhere.

I have said a lot of really regrettable shit to people that I'm friends with (Sometimes idk how I'm still friends with them after bc I still feel bad about it yet they seem to insist I'm forgiven) during times where I was really fucking upset. And it's only until RIGHT after it happens that I fully go "oh shit that was a really bad thing to say & I made the situation significantly worse" Yet just like irl, they forgive. *cries*

Really well done character focused episode. They did fucking stellar character writing here.

Unforgotten Night - One Dumpster Fire to Rule Them All

I expect a monster of steaming trash. I expect giggles of BDSM. I expect heaping tablespoons of deep friend dumpling wrapped sugar coated tripe.

Episode 1 - If Your Expectations Are Low, Limbo Under Them 

In case I wasn’t plain enough at the opening, let me make this clearer than a well-hydrated golden shower. The kink rep is gonna be poor in this show. The queer rep is gonna be absent. The business CEO rep is gonna be appalling. The acting is gonna be wooden. The script is gonna be abysmal. I expect scenery chewing so bad we are all farting wood chips out the other side. Your safeword is not reading this blog and not watching this show. Got it? Okay. 

Dom introduction (Kamol). 

Excellent. We begin with the classic black limo, the classic black on black suit, and an actual rolled carpet. Also cameras from the late 80s. Top marks from complete lack of subtly. Also, it is just me who finds Thai accented Korean incredibly odd? 

Sub introduction (Kim). 

Gurrl! Cosmos? Martinis? Srs? I am beginning to think this is a period piece.

For this drama and this drama alone, I will make one exception. Crying is allowed if you put him in eyeliner and those are pain tears. That’s the rule.

Right actually this a god opening sequence set up, nice plot movement, broken hearted (yet still desired & beloved by all) sub, unsatisfied dom. Clear characterizations and support cast. I’m satisfied. And now for the unforgotten night!

50 Shades of BL let’s DO THIS THING! 

Okay so we see depicted and established consent, even if there’s no proper negotiation, considering we skipped straight to robes, Imma assume there was some ordered cleanliness and negotiation going on before the robing, and go from there. *nodes in plotonium* 

Those restraints are amusingly lose. That said I have had subs with fastening triggers and their binds were mostly for show, so *shrug*. Kinky books corner: romances with great BDSM rep

I was asked in comments about this show for kinky books with good BDSM rep:

Alexis Hall's For Real is not only brilliant, hugely romantic, and incredibly well written, it’s age gap (younger dom, older sub). I have issues with no limits play, but given the reverse power differential in the D/s dynamic I’m okay with this one. This is also my hands down favorite Alexis Hall. 

If you’re interested in gay BDSM with a wide rep of different kinks and always done very well executed with established safewords, contracts, and protocols then the Collars & Cuffs series by K.C. Wells is probubly your best bet. Which one in the series is your favorite will depend on your kinks, I like Dom of the Ages. They can be read in any order but do feature lots of cross over characters and an overarching linear story about one dungeon in the UK. 

A personal favorite and for those of you loving Old Fashion Cupcake, there is Not Safe For Work by L.A. Witt which features an out bisexual, mature characters, and a secret office romance. It’s got great communication and all the tension is from work drama not miscommunication. 

For het, I think Natural Law by Joey Hill is pretty good. It's mixed up with a police investigation crime thriller aspect, though. I don’t read much het, so there probubly are better BDSM reps out there now. 

If you want something highly erotic and very queer and poly but mixed up with historical (follow me here), then I remember enjoying Bound to Be a Groom by Megan Mulry but I read that one a long time ago. It’s a quadruple 2 Doms, 2 subs, mixed M/m, F/f, M/f, F/m pairings (they are all with each other in various ways/kinks). 

I’ve linked to Zon because I lazy, some of these are only there, some are wide. Pay the author, don’t steal the books. Nash. 

I’m not claiming they have good kink rep but here’s: BLS with BDSM elements, and a lot of the dark BLs from Japan are very heavy into kink 

A brief list of shows featuring BDSM that I liked: Love & Leashes (Korea - Netflix), Bonding (UK - Netflix), The Secretary (USA). 

Everything kink comes with triggers attached. 

But why is this director so fascinated with faucets? Is it a metaphor? Seriously, that direct are we? OKAAAAYYYY 

Episode 2 - Kamol Repping for the U-Haul Gays

I would officially like to request doomy Thai mafia music be played every time I give a presentation to my Korean overlords, thank you very much. And also when I step out of my private plane? Sound good? 

I’m of 2 minds over Kamol’s sunglasses. On the one hand, Yoon does look more badass in them. On the other hand, they are ALSO PATENTLY ABSURD.

(Honestly, I am seriously not joking about the presentations. Can you just imagine regression analysis, graphs, and charts only with THAT MUSIC playing the whole time? It would certainly add a bit of... oh I don’t know... je ne sais quoi?) 

Do I think they think they are being subtle putting the Dom on his knees in this shot. Yes yes I do. Are they subtle? No, No they are not. 

THAI LINGUISTICS CORNER 

We pause your regularly scheduled snark, to point out that Kim uses pom/khun with Kamol (as we might expect, this is formal and distancing) while Kamol uses chan/nai with both Kim and his bodyguards. I don’t know what this means (chan as used by a man is somewhat informal but not rude, but also not super common), but I find it intersting. (In the research I could find nai as you was usually paired with rao for the I pronoun, not chan). Nai has been pretty rare in Thai BL, but as we move out of school settings I guess we are going to get more unfamiliar pronouns. Nai is technically the slightly less formal version of khun, gendered specifically for a man of equal social standing defined as: นาย • (naai) Cognate with Lao ນາຍ (nāi) a you pronoun “used to address a male friend.” The bodyguards seem to be using the archaic (semi frozen) from of nai back to Kamol (used to adress or refer to a superior male). 

moving on... 

Nothing much happened. We spent too much time with Kim’s ex. The director made Kim cry again (stop it, Thailand). Kim tried to kick out the mafia. The slightly sus stalker character is back with fruit, and the work ladies are all a flutter. 

Why does this whole show feel like kiddies playing dress up?

We got a bite-size sample of side dishes: age gap + class gap AKA housekeeper’s baby boi meets sexy head bodyguard. ME LIKEY. 

It’s a bit slow, but ya know what? I’m still not mad about it.

Episode 3 - If you’re confused as to whether I like this show, imagine how I feel. 

Our leads continue to have a basic (and very gay) misunderstanding:

Gay Party The First - Kinky One Night Stand to Get Over My Ex

Gay Party The Second - MINE FOREVER

Been there. Run from that. 

Nothing happened in this episode except the stalker/Dom still wants the sub and the sub still wants his ex. But hey, I remain engaged. That’s something I suppose. Now move aside UN, I got Triage to catch up on! 

Also, so far, def not enough BDSM. I am disappointed, but then I expected that. 

Episode 4 - The Background Music is Okay, I guess? 

Recent discussions over the craptastic nature of Thai BL credit sequence tunes has made me appreciate this one aspect of this show, if nothing else. The music is fine. 

Look, it’s crystal clear, while Yoon can (attempt) to be in every Thai BL he can’t play every role. CEO mafia Dom does not suit him - I keep wanting to pich his cute little cheeks and ask, “What so serious?"  

What is it with Kamol climbing on beds with his shoes on? First of all: SHOES inside the bedroom at all? Ugh disgusting. Then on the bed? Yech. 

Also, can we talk about how impractically dumb this wee mirror is? 

"I have a tiny mirror but have you seen the size of my... tattoo?” 

The dinner table “you should speak in a nicer tone” conversation was actually pretty funny. Kamol is a fun character when others are mocking him like I want to. 

I adore the “assistant” and his baby boy ( @heretherebedork​ you are with me, right?) Please make them happen. I know this isn’t Japan (who loves an age gap), but isn’t this MEANT to be a kinky drama? There are more than a thousand ways to be kinky, you know? 

Give Assistant Daddy his baby boy, okay? 

Okay. 

Look at the little face. He wants P’Daddy so bad.

Episode 5 - The First Rule of Body-guarding, Don’t Get in the Middle of a Bitch Fight 

Poor Lop stuck in the middle of an A1 class bitch fight.

I do like that Kamol is direct and open about romantic communication, it’s a very Dom thing to do, at least it should be.

The tiger was dumb. Don’t keep tigers as pets you moron.

Episode 6 - Sucker for Side Dishes Manifests  

There is a terrible party, and a terrible fight sequence, and some terrible dialogue. 

About what I expected, actually. 

This is a crappy dumb show.

We got the tiniest of scraps of a side dish, but they are so unbelievably cute together. They have both mine and, of course, @heretherebedork​ ’s hearts. 

Sometimes I think I should rename this blog 

“sucker for side dishes and second lead syndrome.” 

Or is that just a poem I’m writing about myself?

I’d say “make it stop” but can’t stop the dumpster fire! 

Episode 7 - They’re Separated, What a Relief 

I do love it when Thailand tries on domesticity for size. 

I have no idea why they insist on leaving that one for Taiwan and Vietnam 90% of the time, tiny gay families are THE BEST. And you know Thailand can handle it.

Ah, now I’m getting all misty eyed over My Ride... 

I was going to say that the promise of this show is being squandered, and then I realized that it had no promise.

Look, the safety precautions and sending Kim away makes absolutely no sense in any universe even a Thai mafia one. 

OMG! It’s the house again! 

You know, that house. That one house that all the gay boys live in. The only house that exists in all of Thailand. 

That House.

FEAR THE STAIRS!

Look here Thailand. I demand that either:

Someone dies and artistically bleeds all over these floating stairs in a lovely splash of red or

Someone falls off these stairs or (better) is pushed at some point

If you insist on option 2 I will, under sufferance, accept that it be a pratfall crash into the seme. 

It’s only fair, you keep taunting us with these stair. USE THEM as all the gods of BL intended, for murder or comedy.

Those are your only option.  

Honestly, I really kind of liked this episode. The fact that the lead couple is apart for most of it was all to the better. I don’t know what that says about this show (nothing good) but there it is.

Meanwhile, that secondary couple hug was too much. Age gap gets me every time.

The tentative nature of it and the way P’Daddy really wants to hug back but can’t. These two have more chemistry in one glance than the leads do in chains.  

And NOW A kidnaping. How exciting. 

Episode 8 - WAIT, no kidnapping? how disappointing 

Is it just me, or did the fight scene improve this time around? That’s nice. 

Still no blood on the floating stairs, but you can’t have everything. Especially not in a Thai BL. 

I like the fact that they highlighted the flawed reasoning and the weird plot point from the last episode (sending Kim away from the safety of a fortress and a  million bodyguards “for his own good”.) 

But there still wasn’t a good explanation for Kamol’s decision. 

Shrimp trope! 

Thai Language Corner:

At one point I reminded you all that gin กิน (the Thai verb) for “eat” is a double entendre, well here it is being a single entendre. 

Ooh, and an arse slap! 

A rare and remarkably unusual trope. I shall treasure these moment’s between us, Unforgotten Night, for the rare gems in the cess pit that they are. 

I got to say, a true Dom would make that slap sting a hell of a lot more. The point would be to be remembered for the entire day, every time your sub sat down.

Honestly I don’t have very much to say about this episode. I guess they are cute boyfriends? But do we want cute boyfriends from our mafia daddy? I ask you?

Eh, don’t bother to rise up. Have a gummy to gnaw on instead. It’s not like Kamol’s gonna gnaw on anything soft and sweet. Even when it’s showering RIGHT THERE.

And some hair drying in a WAFFLE ROBE! Haven’t seen one of those in a while. Hello my old friend.

Episode 10 - WHOAH THERE BOYS

Okay, I made myself a boozy affogato of chocolate vanilla peanut butter ice cream with creme de cacao and chambord on top (DON’T JUDGE). 

The handhold thing in the plane was very cute, I like those little Dommy insights. But the whole vacation house thing was weird. A forced found family dynamic or something? 

WHY IS EVERYONE SUDDENLY WEARING NAVY? It’s like the mafia does Ralph Lauren. 

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS SHOW? What’s its purpose in life? What is it trying to do? How am I supposed to feel about it? What the point of anything anymore? What’s the point of life? What’s... ooo...

And now Kim has gone off sex? Why a sudden blushing maiden moment? 

OH WAIT, RIGHT.... bratty sub.

NOTE: This is why you should never top drunk. 

In other (not new) news Khom is a strict but gentle Daddy & Baiboon LOVES it and him so much.

Well, this show is indeed total trash. I mean it takes a lot to make me feel dirty, and this random bodyguard 3 way did it. Not because I’m opposed to group sex, but because with no character development at all, it came entirely out of nowhere. 

One hopes they did too. 

Moving on to Kamol getting some.

No.

Gear in the shower is one thing (shudder) but fastened to THE SHOWER HEAD? What what what?

Have I taught you nothing?

Well, no obviously not.

Episode 11 - Plumbing 

I am three glasses of wine in the sink, so it’s time to start. And also, just let’s get this out front first, no chaining people to plumbing in this episode. No shower arbitrary threesomes. No faucets left on.

In fact, just stay out of bathrooms entirely.

You can’t be trusted.

Right off the plumbing and back to the, erm, plot.

Evil ex is evil in a way that is so one note and awful it’s almost as if he were written by MAME. 

OMG I can not drink enough booze to get through this episode. 

There was this time at this one industry event where there were strawberry daiquiri on tap and it think I stayed up until 4 am drinking them. 

Maybe that would do it? 

Thank the BL gods this ends next week.

Episode 12 - Let’s Flush This Thing

Look I am boozed up for my last Thursday lush day, and we have to finish this show. Somehow. 

Kim is the biggest most immature whiney baby and honestly they just need a Daddy/boy dynamic butt cause (Imma leave that typo for good reason) who else would put up with his nonsense? 

Worst bodyguards in the world? Likely. 

First mention of gay poly marriage in BL? Unquestionably. 

Bummer these two things had to be combined? Oh yeah. 

There is a moral to this “story” but I’m not sure what it is.

Don’t combine your BDSM-but-not-really BL pulp with plumbing issues? 

 That’s it, that’s what I got.

You should have heard the disgusted snort noise I made over the white suit handcuff. 

Look, in the end, this dumpster fire got extinguished with a garden hose and all we’re left with is leaky pipes and the smell of damp trash. 

And the only kinks were in the hose. 

Could be worse, I suppose.

Hard to imagine how, tho.

DS9 - S1E11 - The Nagus

One of the things I've been looking forward to the most for this show is Nog's storyline so this episode was right up my alley. TBH I didn't care much about the main plotline of this episode, it was fine, but the Ferengi as a whole are still kinda annoying to me so it kinda middled for me in that respect.

I did find it amusing when Quark finds out whoever is in charge has the biggest target on their back. I always get a little chuckle when characters have to be reminded what having power can mean for them in these cases. It's generally those same folks that *probably* shouldn't be leading the rest (Random from Amber is different, cause he's perfect and precious and my favorite lol).

I'm also intrigued to see how THIS Rom becomes the union forming Rom. Cause right now he's just like every other Ferengi.

But onto Jake and Nog! Cause these two are the cutest! Sisko is raising Jake to be the best kid. I don't think he needed to sneak off and teach Nog in private like that, cause Sisko clearly approves of this, but I know kid logic has its own reasoning.

When Nog was told he couldn't go to school any more I felt bad for the kid cause he obviously enjoys school even if he can't/won't admit it. Then he had an outburst at Jake about how stupid hu-mans are, I was a little afraid they'd let that relationship crumble for a while (I knew it wouldn't be forever) but I'm glad it got cleared up in like two scenes. Jake and Nog's solution for no more school (at least for now) is the cutest. I adore their friendship.

Anywhoo, this episode was middling but also gave me all the feels.

Sonic Underground watch along

Because… madness, is why. Almost twenty goddamn years ago, I started writing a crossover between the absolute worst piece of Sonic media ever and the games. That fic is The Lost Prince. I am maybe like… two or three chapters from finishing it. TWENTY YEARS AND THREE CHAPTERS. And I have no motivation. You cannot understand the pain this causes me.

So I’m watching the worst piece of Sonic media again in search of inspiration.

And I’m going to talk about it while I do it.

(Normally, I do things like this over on lediz-watches, but because this is specifically to explain some of my headcanons and inspire my writing, it’s here)

So let’s set the scene, first. This has become somewhat common knowledge in Sonic Tumblr fandom these days, but bear with me, because it’s important context.

(Also, the next paragraph is going to get me more death threats because I CERTAINLY HAVEN’T GOTTEN ENOUGH OF THOSE FROM THIS FANDOM, but we’ll carry on anyway because it’s important context)

Once upon a time, there was a cartoon series called Sonic the Hedgehog, now known as SatAM for reasons mostly relating to its timeslot. Sonic the Hedgehog was perfectly acceptable grimdark 90s environmentalist children’s programming which due to classic 90s multimedia marketing strategy also gave rise to the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics. It got cancelled on a cliffhanger because that was the kind of thing that happened in the 90s where writers thought FOR SURE a cliffhanger would spare them from the dreaded 2-season contract. (It never did.)

The reason this matters is because the production house maintained the licensing rights to that particular branch of franchise. And they needed a quick cash grab.

For some reason which I will never understand, this spawned Sonic Underground, which is… an insane premise, cheap animation, surprisingly not terrible songs, and a handful of voice actors getting milked for every inch of their three-voice contracts.

Sonic is a prince! He has siblings that are TOTALLY NOT knock-off Princess Sally Acorn or Miles Tails Prower! They have magic necklaces! They save the day with music! Don’t notice the statues of King Max Acorn in the background! Knuckles’ grandfather from the comics is there! Knuckles has magic! The Floating Island has guns! Totally don’t pay attention to the fact that both the episodes and music tracks have separate licensing that will cost the networks extra! No we don’t have time to check for animation errors! ALSO let us use highly complicated political socio-economic difficulties of enlightenment and industrialism as world building BUT DON’T NOTICE WHAT WE’RE DOING just accept the ones we say are bad are bad and the good guys are good! Good? Good. Great.

It is a trashfire.

I adore it.

I have no excuse.

I do, however, have wine.

Let’s go, kids.

Sonic Underground 01: Beginnings

The plot (for want of a better word): Once upon a time, Queen Aleena of Mobius ruled a beautiful world kingdom city (?) and had three lovely babies: Sonic, Sonia, and Manic. An evil industrialist named Ivo Robotnik came out of nowhere and took over her city world kingdom (?), turning all the aristocrats evil. In desperation, Aleena turned to the Oracle of Delphi I mean Delphius who told her that she must hide herself and her children away, until they could reunite as the Council of Four and enter a glorious New Age.

This episode is about the three children growing up, realising they have siblings, magical music, and the much less exciting fact that they’re once and former royalty, and coming together through The Power of Harmony.

Now, this episode immediately showcases what I love about The Trashfire: its background worldbuilding. You are not supposed to notice the worldbuilding, but it’s there and it’s amazing.

Realistically, Aleena would have been an absolutely terrible queen. I am not in the least bit surprised her aristocrats followed Robotnik, who promoted science and industrialisation and then sold them cheap labour. Honestly. Compare that to –

The facsimile of the Hanging Gardens, right there in the first twenty seconds. The HANGING GARDENS. Beautiful, yes. Legendary, absolutely. Would I have loved to see it? Hell yes! A good use of time or resources or indeed environment? HAH. MEANWHILE –

Slums! I don’t care what your artistic imagery is telling me, those tight dark alleyways you’re running down were there before Robotnik took over, your majesty. And you’re wasting tax payer dollars mobiums on THE HANGING GARDENS.

Manic was supposed to go to a middle-class family – you can tell by the clothing of the person that comes to the door. And he’s immediately stolen. Don’t question why a thief would steal a baby (there are so many things we must not question), but notice that it took all of ten seconds. The crime rate in her supposedly perfect city is CRAZY.

Side note: Manic was supposed to go to a middle-class family! The triplets should have gone aristocrat-middle class-working class, but instead we skipped straight from aristocrat to working class and then down to thief, but Aleena NEVER INTENDED to teach her children about the underclass.

Is Mobius a kingdom? Is it a world? We don’t know. We will never know. It Just Is, and Robotnik rules it, while Aleena used to rule it. Stop asking questions.

Music is illegal. This is a real thing that has happened in fascist communities, by the way, usually as a way of controlling the youth. And yet Sonia and Bartleby are out looking for an illegal club. Bartleby is bitching the whole way, but he’s there and he’d looking because it makes Sonia happy and it says SO MUCH about the spineless little worm. I love him.

Anyway. Onto my episode notes:

These character designs. What are these character designs… In my fic I call the alien-looking thing mixes, and say it's what happens when too many super classes (like... canine, feline, fish, etc) interbreed, but really it's just WEIRD.

Goddamnit, I hate Sonia. Not because of her character itself – she is… fine. But I hated GRRL Power even when I was the target audience of it, because of reasons that I can and probably will eventually go on for hours about. But basically, I mostly just hate that she’s perfect at everything, and her only flaws are being bossy and over emotional. It’s not real character, it’s not real personality, and I hate it.

Oh. A thing I’d forgotten. Sonic Underground’s one and only positive influence on other Sonic media: this was the first western animation that gave the hedgehogs more than three spikes. Probably because 3D games were also coming and going to make it A Thing.

Also: Sonic’s Tragic Backstory! I make so much of these foster parents for so many reasons.

But uh… yeah, starting the first episode with the out of place smiles during emotional moments… Sonic and Chuck smiling blandly as the only home Sonic’s ever known burns to the ground in front of them…

Imagine if you’d never read the comics or watched SatAM. Uncle Chuck and his dump-base would be a such a strange thing to see…

Oh, wow… Sonic’s reaction to the Oracle of Delphius’s nonsense. “I’m a prince? Weird. I’m a BROTHER? HOLY CRAP!”

Poor Sleet and Dingo. They never wanted to be evil, but they’re… not even very good at it…

THE SONG: Someday. Meatloaf pop eat your heart out. You would never believe that this was actually a pretty good storyboard match for some legit music videos at the time.

Seriously, Oracle, you could have stopped all of this by just stabbing him instead of warning him. You aren’t a good guy. Don’t pretend to be.

The instrumental song! Legit Sonic music. In fact, this gives serious Sonic and the Secret Rings vibes… I demand more than thirty seconds.

“Oh no, my family has been captured and turned into a robot! But you say my necklace is MAGIC? Fascinating…!”

I mean, look. I can’t defend this thing. I won’t defend this thing. Even when I was a kid, I knew it was terrible.

But I’m having fun anyway.

Normally, on these posts, I'll do one at a time because I've just realised how LONG these are, but the first three episodes are really just an hour-long conjoined episode. And things like that are s why I know at least someone in the producer's studio legitimately thought the Trashfire was a good idea. They were wrong.

Anyway. Sonic Underground 02: Getting to Know You

The plot (for want of a better word): the three siblings set out as directed by the Oracle of Delphius. They encounter a trainer who teaches Sonic how to stop, Sonia how to spin, and Manic how to do cool tricks with his drum sticks that he will barely use throughout the series. Mostly, it’s an episode that introduces some overarching themes, like Sonic being impulsive and irritable, Sonia being prissy, Manic’s insecurities, the divide between proper girl and stinky boys, and that while the triplets will tease each other constantly, it’s always all for one if someone else comes after them.

…That made it sound much sweeter and better than it actually is.

Dingo… she’s not that pretty, and don’t let Sleet tell you you’re ugly. You’re both 90s villains. I’m sure someone’s made Rule 34 fanart of you.

Oh hahaha Sonia’s so out of touch, thinking there’s a maid and that a mouse is terrible ahahano. GUYS.

Look, I hate Sonia, I do, but I have to give her props that Sonic and Manic don’t. Two hours ago she was a sheltered aristocrat’s daughter, she’s stating her expectations, and when Sonic shuts her down she makes a quick joke and gets on with things. I appreciate the pragmatism. I will give her that.

Look, Sleet, you gave Dingo an instruction and he followed it. Don’t act surprised. (Spoiler warning: He will continue to be surprised.)

Okay, this is a weird thing that the show will play with occasionally. Sonic and Sonia trade off mission-focus tunnel vision all the time. Usually when they want the other one to seem flighty or impatient respectively. But Sonia loses her props for not just getting to the point when their lives are on the line.

And then the boys lose it for being Idiot Boys despite the conversation.

Ah, Sonic Undgeround’s weird timelines. How I’d forgotten them. Side note, I also have trouble with pacing and timelines when writing The Lost Prince, so I probably can’t blame it. But here, they’ve been walking for two days, and Sonia is only NOW asking what Manic did for a living.

(also, notice that even Sonia, sheltered aristocrat that she is, thinks everyone of their age should have a proper job. They are somewhere between the ages of twelve and sixteen, folks! I make way too much of this!)

Gondar. Is certainly not voiced by the same guy as Robotnik, I’m sure.

No one questions why Sonic has super speed. This is not considered to be his ‘hidden talent’. For Reasons.

Manic’s ability to make drum sticks fly around will never be mentioned after this episode, to my memory.

Three days plus however much training time… and Robotnik is only just now figuring out the map they found? Apparently the super genius can’t read.

Ahh, Manic’s insecurity. So very well founded. He’s right, I’d argue – Sonic’s speed and Sonia’s… whatever that spin thing is, they are both so much more powerful than being able to throw sticks. And this isn’t even Sokka in the Last Airbender thing, the sticks are basically useless and will continue to be so. His actual power (SPOILERS) is over the earth, to the point that the whole stick thing is a weird addition from the get-go.

I’ll be honest with you, the monks and the invisible stairs are the only things I ever remember from this episode, because it’s such a weird visual that isn’t important in any way.

Sonic implying less than 100% American heterosexuality counter +1

Okay, so this is another running theme with the series, where they’re going to say Sonic’s impulsiveness is a huge problem, but the times when it isn’t, he won’t do anything different, it will just be that either Sonia tells him what to do, or he suddenly shows far more battle skill than he does when the impulsiveness is a problem. This is a common thread in Sonic media, actually, and it always kind of annoys me because they never do it well. Everything is always Sonic’s fault, except when it isn’t. Yes, this is why I still haven’t gotten around to watching Sonic Prime.

…Wait, that was it?

Oh, yeah, in a better show this would have been the second third of a long first episode, RIGHT.

Sonic Underground 03: Harmony or Something

The plot (for want of a better word): After having discovered Manic’s power over the earth, the triplets are told Sonic’s friend Trevor is in danger. They abandon their training to rescue him, only to uncover a scheme to hunt down the Oracle of Delphius! The triplets must think quickly and work as a team to save everyone!

Once again, Sonic being cranky disrupts the harmony and causes problems. 90s Sonic was always so cranky…

A bit of world building here again, that you surprisingly are supposed to notice: elementals (of which dragons apparently count) are a thing, and apparently common-place enough that they teach it in school. Now, the way the conversation is phrased, you’re supposed to think Sonic’s stupid for not knowing about it, but Sonia is the only one that does. This is absolutely where I got the idea that she’s the only one of the three that went to school. Which would make sense in context, but I am thinking way too hard about it…

“Control of the earth can set off powers beyond your control”… this will never come up again. Manic, you could have had such an epic character arc of growing arrogance and humility… Instead I have to think too much about it and read into Manic’s insecurity and make him into A Nice Guy and ughhhh I am such a problem.

“I have also learnt that you might have the biggest heart in the world” – this is about Sonic, and while I agree with this characterisation in general, I have not seen it in this series, and certainly neither has Sonia. But we move on.

 Jeez… yeah, Bartleby’s a sleaze and a problem, but again, put a little reality on this situation and he’s actually worth his salt. He ‘walks the fine line’ as per Sonia’s words, and is immediately threatened by the sight of a woman who was his social equal (if not better) having been robbed of her sentience and turned into a slave, and he still does nothing worse than continue to walk the fine line. He’s a jellyfish, but the man’s got integrity.

Dingo, in contrast, is a creep, and Sleet’s insults make like, no sense

Once again, Sonia knows all the things. Hacking, flying jets, this will keep happening… If a skill is needed, Sonia will have it, as a good 90s female. God, I hate her character type.

Manic… seriously, man, mortal peril is not the time to play around, but Sonia, snarking at Sonic during mortal peril is also not appropriate

And the first of Aleena’s guilt tripping holograms! Hooray!

THE SONG: Birds of a Feather… oh, the… the early 90s pop nostalgia… oh ouch… it hurts…

 …I appreciate Sleet’s pragmatism. It never works out for him, but I appreciate it.

Aleena… Oracle… it… I get prophecy, but… you’re RIGHT THERE. Reunite! Save us the next 37 episodes and the unresolved ending! Or at least tell the kids to stop looking until they’re ready. Come on.

The prophecy is obnoxiously vague, by the way. In this episode, it’s… arguably implied that the triplets need to learn to be better before they can be given their rightful place as rulers, but I would argue that in 40 episodes, the show takes absolutely no steps to improve their characters and make them better leaders. And as I said last time, Aleena is implied to have been not great to begin with. So CLEARLY my solution to this whole problem is change the last two minutes of this episode.

But that was the opening movie! Ridiculously too fast-paced for what it was trying to do, terrible animation, amazing world-building, interesting characters, acceptable dialogue. Welcome to the Trashfire that I have loved for half my life.

Dude it's been less than a minute what the fuck. You can't just throw this at me within the first minute like it's just a casual normal thing.

Okay so this also made me realize that the gems are in fact not organic but Steven is so I guess Steven is a flesh gem. I hate that. I do not like this knowledge.

Ok this dance sequence was very adorable & I'm gonna go out on a limb here & assume these two are gonna be, like, y'know, a 'thing' by the end of the series. Idk man, maybe I'm crazy, I just have a striking suspicion that the show is trying to hint to me that these two might have romantic feelings toward eachother. Idk I just get the feeling that's what I'm being told. Just a hunch.

OH. OH OKAY THIS EXPLAINS THE EPISODE TITLE. YEAH OKAY. I HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS NOW. LIKE A LOT. JUST OPENED UP A WHOLE CAN OF WORMS IN THE SPAN OF 5 SECONDS-

Okay I find it funny that they just put Connie's top over Steven's shirt & that's it. Like no new clothing just put on both at once. That is amusing.

Also love how Garnet was just so supportive. She was just like so immediately like "YEAH LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Also this frame of Garnet is absolutely spectacular. Quality frame. This gets 1 billion points. I love her. ❤️

OK Sadie & Lars are apparently just immediately huge simps for Stevonnie. Like damn you guys are both super down bad for someone you just met. You literally just met this person & already y'all are like "Actually you don't have to pay for food because we think you're hot!"
