Good Luck Charm

Boji found his silver lining to being cursed after all.

The sun had yet to make its trek across the horizon. The night drowned most of the color of the grassy plains. Boji held onto the stead being led by Bebin in search of his comrade. Mitsumata’s offspring combed thru the land and in turn, found what they were looking for.

I am doing the right thing…right? Boji shook that thought out of his head. He made his decision. It wasn’t time to second guess anymore. He un-mounted the horse and took off. Bebin took his leave wishing his short-served King luck.

Growing up as a prince he had a lot to be thankful for. He was privileged in that even with his supposed defect people accommodated him. There were others completely worse off. But…

It wasn’t enough to stop him from being selfish and hurt by the words of others. Words that even if he couldn’t hear them still seared and dug into his skin.

Weak, idiot, incompetent the list went on. It was the same cycle over and over. People who were sworn to his father and by extension him and his family were the same people whose lips read differently than what they communicated to him. Liars who he couldn’t help but love all the same. From his closest people, there was love but there was no faith. That hurt more than the injuries Daida had inflicted on him.

“You won that fight and made it look easy.” Thinking of it as false flattery Boji showed his tired smile. He pointed to the rest of his wardrobe so the member of the shadow clan would take his fill and his leave.

“No, I’m not here for that.” Kage’s eyes in that moment reflected what the little prince could make out as remorse.

“I know how this is gonna sound and I get that it’s outta nowhere… I just...I’m on your side alright! No matter what happens.”

He didn’t know at the time if those words were lies but he wanted to believe them. He needed it. So he clung to them. He never felt so relieved after crying more tears he became lighter.

His memory went back to the conversation with his teacher (the good one).

“You know why the gas of the underworld entrance didn’t kill the two of you right?” Despa asked while buttering his toast at breakfast. He wondered if they knew of their own predicaments or at least what he surmised himself.

“Uhh, we kinda assumed it must have been knock-out gas.” Kage answered taking a bite of his toast. Boji already cleared his plate and sat listening while wondering if it would be okay to ask for seconds.

“Heavens no, it’s actually cursed gas meant to kill anyone not permitted in the underworld.”

“So you sayin we got lucky?” Kage’s eyes widened from that tidbit of knowledge.

“Well luck may not be the right wording..” it looked like he would have to explain some things.

So curses deflected or canceled one another…It made sense now looking back on it. One of no strength and the other with a body that brought mistrust and scorn from others. Those were their curses. As fate would have it their paths crossed.

“A good luck charm will keep you from misfortune so long as you keep it close."

Good luck charm, encourager, and friend. Kage brought out hope and that gave him the strength he never thought possible. In turn, Boji vowed to always trust him.

“King or not if you find something which truly matters to you. You ought to pursue that something with all your heart. “

Following his mother's words He would make his own kingdom. One that would accept and value them. Would it be possible? Even if it wasn’t this journey would be fun!

Kage was surprised but happy to see his friend. Even with the new goals Boji placed he would back his friend up.

“So you still got even more to learn is that right? Meaning we gotta run off on a whole nother journey now. Hey, you brought some coin didn’t cha?” Kage asked. His eyes lit up at the gold Boji showed in his satchel. “ a king’s ransom!”

“Auggh eh!” Let’s go!

“Wahoo!” They both sprang in excitement with their legs carrying them to their next destination.

“Than-k y-ou!” Boji didn’t need to turn back to know why Kage’s voice was wobbly. Tears were also coming from Boji’s own eyes. thank you. Please stay by my side.

If it meant he had Kage by his side then Boji would be content to remain cursed alongside his friend for the rest of his days.

I don’t actually know if there is a theory that their curses cancel each other out in a limited sense but I thought that would be cute for them.

Wahoo! This personal piece is done! I had a lot of fun playing with the brushes in Procreate. And of course I'm a huge sucker for this color scheme.

Next quarter, I'm taking a class about color. I'm really excited about it. I get color theory but need work at picking color schemes, so looking forward to getting some guidance.

Dungeons and Marios: Honor Among Brothers

I consider the films Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the Super Mario Brothers movie to be successes as good films. I found them both enjoyable, but also find that both of them work because the people behind them made similar choices. There’s a lot of lessons there, and you know me, I’m definitely going to write it down.

Let me pause to note I do not consider them to be of equal quality. The Dungeons and Dragons movie is fun, emotionally resonant, and both grand yet very human. The Super Mario Brothers film is a fun romp with some clever choices, but not as deep. But the lessons - even where they both don’t succeed - are illustrative.

So how did two different films do same things, let’s take a look. There are of course spoilers here, so here there be dragons (or Koopas).

Be Fun and Entertaining

Both movies are actually fun. There’s action, there’s jokes, there’s actors and actresses giving it their all. I had a good time at both. Super Mario Brothers was so snappy and tight I didn’t even take a break.

Fun can be forgotten, especially when you already have other things on your mind like adaption. But you have to give people a reason to pay attention beyond “hey I adapted this.” Be it Chris Pine being a charisma bomb or a brain-twisting Mario scene where the infamous Rainbow Road is realized, give people a reason to enjoy it.

You can also tell people enjoyed making them, both have a joy to them. Which probably says a lot about why they work as well.

Don’t Run Away From What You Are

The Dungeons and Dragons film is just like the games - not the books. A group of confused dumbasses get into trouble and save the day. It feels like a gaming session, right down to bad luck and unwise choices.

The Super Mario Brothers movie is colorful, bright, and strange. There are moments it has homages to the games and gameplay, but outside of those it runs on a kind of game logic. It feels like a game and doesn’t apologize at all.

This is what people came for. I do not come wanting an explanation of Mordenkainen’s magic or how to use a Fire Flower. I want to see hypercompetent stupidity and someone yelling “wahoo” he stomps on evil turtles. And I got it.

Use It But Don’t Overexplain

Dungeons and Dragons brings decades of history, rules, rules changes, rules arguments, novels, adaptions, and more. What do you do with that? Well, it’s raw material but you tell a story first - ten minutes of rules are boring but the sorcerer Simon struggling to “attune” to a magical item is interesting because it’s about a person.

Meanwhile the Mario film inherits a disjointed series of games and events without an exact timeline or even consistency. The film takes a pile of stuff and forges it into a setting but also doesn’t explain it much. Power ups just exist - what matters is how you use them. An industro-solarpunk kingdom of apes just exist - what matters is if you can make them allies. Tell a story - besides people already bought into the premise of plumbers teleported to this cartoony realm anyway.

The stuff you adapt is fuel for an actual story.

Get A Cast That Works

Want a good adaption? Get a cast that will embrace the roles and bring things to life so people feel and enjoy the film. Even the best script is nothing without the right cast.

Dungeons and Dragons cast is stellar. It’s like a movie filled with leads that just happens to center on Chris Pine’s bard, Edgin. From the humor to the pathos, the cast brings you into the film. A few characters might have been used better or given more depth, but everyone used what they got and then some.

Super Mario mostly does the same thing. Jack Black owns his role as Bowser and brings pathos to the character (more later). Anya Taylor-Joys Princess Peach is fantastic, badass, and charming enough she’s sort of the main character at times. Charlie Day is terribly underused as Luigi, but clearly brought is A game. I could compliment others, but you get the idea. The film is inherently ridiculous but the cast is game, as it were.

Now Chris Pratt is the elephant in the room. Regarding his problematic statements, I looked into them for this article, and it appears he’s not bigoted, but is not always thoughtful or good at reading a situation. Regarding his acting, he can “phone it in” but can really shine when he sinks his teeth into a role.

That being said, his Mairo performance was extremely generic. It was enough to move things along and make Mario human, but he didn’t add anything to the role. Whether it’s his fault or the scriptwriters, I’m not sure. I also noticed the animators did some amazing expression work with Bowser and Peach and wondered if they were more restrained with Mario.

Either way, lesson learned - get a cast that’s good and let them go.

Give Us Real Emotional Arcs

The Dungeons and Dragons movie brought tears to my eyes, once during That Scene at the end (if you saw it, you know), and once afterwards when I realized how I related to a character’s speech. The movie has multiple emotional arcs that bring it to life, give characters reasons to do things, and help you connect.

This is not consistent among the cast or characters, and I blame the script. It’s a perfectly fine script, but a few more scenes could have done wonders. But what is there is good.

Believe it or not Super Mario Brothers does this too, multiple times. In fact, there’s a scene where Mario and his original nemesis Donkey Kong find out they’re a lot alike. When a cartoon plumber and a big monkey share parallel emotions, you’ve done something right.

However Super Mario Brothers also doesn’t dive into the emotional arcs as well as Dungeons and Dragons and is poorer for it. There’s some unused potential, from Mario feeling defensive about Luigi to Princess Peach’s isolation as a lone human in her world. There’s unexplored character motivations, such as Toad’s heroic drive that differentiates him from his fellows. I feel there’s 5-10 minutes of cut footage that made it a better movie.

But the lessons stay the same. In fact . . .

Give Us Relatable Villains

Hugh Grant, playing con-man Forge charms his way through the Dungeons and Dragons movie in a way only he could. Daisy Head’s creepy sorceress Sofina is something out of a horror film, and you believe she’d like nothing more to murder the idiots surrounding her. Both get scenes that aren’t just villainy but humanity - Forge finds a joy in adoptive fatherhood, and Sofina snaps over how annoying Forge is in a relatable way.

This is great, they’re enjoyable. They get human moments - but only the acting covers the fact they’re otherwise paper-thin characters. Both could have shown more depth with just a few tweaks or an extra scene or two. The actors clearly work with what they have, but there could have been more.

Meanwhile let me commit blasphemy - Jack Black’s Bowser in Super Mario not only gets to be relatable, his character is better handled than the villains in Dungeons and Dragons.

Yes I went there.

Black’s Bowser is a terrifying warlord and a hopeless romantic. Madly in love with Princess Peach, he hopes to impress her and marry her instead of conquering her kingdom (sort of). Throw in Black’s performance with excellent animation, and Bowser becomes sympathetic, a kind of ridiculously Shakespearean character of extremes. If anything, I felt there was more to explore.

Both films add villains with some understandable traits. Super Mario does it better. Forge and Sofina aren’t interesting enough on their own, but Black’s Bowser feels like he could carry an entire film.

Do A Film Not A Preview

As I’ve said before, I will compliment the Marvel movies on sheer competency. However, I’m also extremely tired that the interlinked nature of stories seems to “wash out” the films. There’s that need to keep the mega-franchise going, and there’s a certain “safety” in choices that wears thin. Make something that stands on its own – like these films!

Dungeons and Dragons and Super Mario Brothers are delightfully standalone. They do their job, they deliver. Sure you may care due to the games - in fact it’s the only reason to care about Super Mario Brothers. But both stand on their own quite well and in a satisfying manner.

There’s just that thrill of being able to “close the book” and move on with each. Both deserve sequels of some kind, but its nice to see them deliver and be done. It helps the people making them focus, and it means each film is reliably complete.

In Conclusion

So there you have it. Both of these adaptions based on games, both wildly different, really succeed due to the same choices. Embrace what you do, don’t overexplain, get the right cast and real emotional arcs we feel. That’s it.

It feels unnecessary to explain this, but maybe the fact I feel this says volumes about the poor media I’ve seen - and how I enjoyed these two pieces. Let’s learn from them, and maybe apply these lessons to things beyond giant big budget movies.

Oracle and Ravio's Terraria Playthrough!

aka another long-ass post full of screenshots, wahoo

@ravio-the-cabinet-man and I beat the Moon Lord yesterday, the first time ever for both of us! So while we decide what we wanna do next (aside from playing with Rice), I'm finally gonna share screenshots of the things we've built. This is a medium world if I remember right, on Journey mode (bc we just like to goof around), and it's named 'Quack', thanks to Ravio's habit of naming things different animal noises

Up first, our house! Its name is Jeremiah, bc I asked Ravio what we should call it, and he immediately suggested that. The basement originally was the same length as the house above it, but as we got more and more items and more and more crafting stations, we had to expand, lol.

We made sure a lot of these rooms were vaild housing, so that whenever new npcs arrived, they'd come to our main house until we found a new home for them. The Tax Collector and Golfer still live with us, bc I never got around to building places for them (and it's nice to have the Tax Collector nearby, even if I feel bad abt having npcs pay rent).

To the left of that is Ravio's lil greenhouse, bc he's in charge of potion-making, and a heart-shaped pond. The greenhouse has a name as well, but I can only remember the last part of it, which is '-Jeremiah's Lover'. The buildings are gay

Further to the left is a lil arena where we go for events like Solar Eclipses. Pretty much all of our banners are hung here lksdjf;al

Continuing on further left, we've got a fishing dock! One of many around our world. It's pretty close to the Event Arena, so monsters get stuck under the dock. a Lot

Left some more, we've got the snow biome, where the Goblin Tinkerer, Mechanic, Steampunker, and Cyborg all live, ft. banners from the Celestial Pillar monsters bc one of the pillars always spawns nearby

We shimmered most of our npcs btw- the minute we found the Aether biome, we went ham dunking everything in the water (including Ravio)

Past that, is our desert ghost town (desert-ed town?). It HAD been the home of our Nurse, Arms Dealer, and Dye Trader, but when we defeated the Wall of Flesh the corruption spawned here :/ We tried purifying it, but the npcs still refused to move back in, so we ended up building them a new place on the other side of the world

Instead of just leaving it or tearing it down, we turned the old desert settlement into a ghost town, full of holes, cobwebs, and gravestones that say things like 'RIP Twitter'. Just for funsies

A ways past that, we have the Dungeon, an arena built in front of it, and our underground 'temple'/palace deal so we could put a pylon here. One of the Celestial Pillars spawns above the arena, so that's neat

Unfortunately I tried to make this arena look interesting, but the way I did it, it kind of gives me a headache if I run through it too fast, rip. It has been So easy to trigger migraines lately, I have to be careful even reforging items too fast, bc the flashing colors get to me. But anyway

This was built quite a while after the arena, and I had a LOT of fun with it. The Tavernkeep, Demolitionist, and Clothier live here. The pylon is just off-screen to the left, at the bottom of the stairs. The elevator on the right just leads to the entrance of the arena above

Left again, we've got some Corruption we purified, along with a tunnel we dug around the Glowing Mushroom biome juuust in case we missed any Corruption

The Glowing Mushroom biome, built over the remains of an old patch of Corruption. I'd done a big mushroom in my own single-player world, but it ended up really stiff, so I tried to improve on that here.

The inside of the cap is sorta unfinished but shh don't worry abt it, there were other projects that needed to be done

The left ocean got turned into a quick arena that we used for the Pumpkin Moon and Martian Madness events, and Duke Fishron (a boss we died to so, so, SO many times before I realized I'd had the difficulty turned up to 'expert' like a goof)

Zooming back to the center of the world, we've got a fishing pond to the right of our beloved house Jeremiah, and a small graveyard at the initial spawn point. The graves are dedicated to our first guide who died to summon the Wall of Flesh, our second guide who was accidentally murdered when Ravio's minions killed a demon over lava in the Underworld (followed by shrieks of panic when Ravio had to face WoF alone, pff), and the six (6) npcs that were slaughtered when we fought the Empress of Light during the day- we didn't realize just how far her attacks could reach, and they're all one-hit-KOs during the day... Pretty sure everyone living in the Hallow Tower died (skill issue. get good)

Next to the graves is an unfinished house I built for the Guide, the Merchant, and a slime pet or two. At the time I took this screenshot, the Nerd Slime was dead :( Daytime EoL again, smh

To the right, over a hill and a hellevator, is the Hallow! It initially spawned in the Jungle (SIGH) so I bought some seeds to spread it into the forest a bit, though I never ended up planting trees and making it pretty. We've got two dorky lil 'arenas' where we fight EoL bc we're stupid <3 She's the only boss fight we do repeatedly for fun, but we never bothered to build a proper arena for it. Spending any time in the Hallow? Fuck building, we're fighting EoL

One of my very favorite builds, the unfinished Hallow Tower... full of random doors in the walls, because the Pylon is inside the tower, and a Celestial Pillar always spawns Right Outside (or, on the very fucking top of the tower, unfortunately), so we kept getting trapped in the tower with a ton of monsters harassing us </3 The Party Girl, Princess, and Wizard all live here, with a pet rabbit and the Cool Slime. They die all the time.

I ended up having to fill the uppermost roof with grass + spray it with Hallow solution so the top half of the tower would still count as being in the Hallow, because it's just so tall, lol

Past the Hallowed part of the jungle is. probably the funniest bit of our world. I um. made a BIG fancy arena specifically for the Old One's Army event. Went all Extra with it, made it real grand. And we've left the jungle npcs in one of those wooden apartment buildings ;jflaskdjf;a;

Even on Journey mode with two players, the Old One's Army was DIFFICULT omg. I'm not sure I want to try it on my own

Through another small forest, we've got the non-Corrupted desert! Full of Celestial Pillar banners, because this is another spot a Pillar always spawns. Our Dye Trader likes to sit on the balcony and watch fire rain from the sky. Remarkably, he hasn't died yet

And finally, we've got the right ocean, where the Angler, Stylist, and Pirate all live! This was another pretty early build

And that's it for now! We're for sure gonna continue goofing off here, and start a new world with new characters at some point- potentially in Classic mode, depending on if I can work out how to make a proper server to reduce lag, lol

Yesterday it was very rainy, so when I went out to plan my day, our domesticated stray thought she could stay dry.

I noticed the hole in the back was leaking, so I figured I'd try and stem the problem with my funny idea. I have no exterior bodywork experience, so welding and bondo-ing are currently not in my wheelhouse. Plus I wanted to do this anyway. Since this Gremlin will never be a show car, I want to have a little fun with it. It's a diet rat rod, and some cars get a "bomber" designation whether the racing class or painted up like a bomber plane. Here, I'm making a 'fuse' for the 'bomb' that is my car. I got a pipe fitting that wound up screwing right nicely into the hole (in the future I will rust-proof this area). And then putting a sink hose on to look like a big visco fuse (I'll have to paint it later). I want to put a two or three-piece acrylic end on the fuse to make it look like it's lit up. But that's a future project!

I put on the Hornet grill I had and it mostly fits. I just hope it holds up while I'm driving it. Then I mocked up the seat tracks for about where they're going to go.

I put green LED's in a while back, but even with the incandescent bulbs, the dash lit up green when I got the car. I have my doubts that AMC used green filters for the X packaged Gremlins, but I could be wrong. I also tried to match some seat belt colors to the lights.

I got a blue led light for the high-beams indicator, but the original gauge has a piece of yellow or brown tape(?) on it to make the indicator light yellow. It was clouded and miscolored, so I removed the bit over the hole. I may change it to yellow. Also checking out the warning lights. You can also see the cardboard tube "light pipe".

Today I made some big steps to being finished.

I took the headliner out of the garage where I had done some repairs last year. For repairs, I mostly used wood glue, cardboard, and string-reinforced packing tape. The headliner is a sandwich layer of thin hardboard, polystyrene (styrofoam), hardboard, and the plastic layer you see. I sprayed the backside down with Thompson's Water Seal aerosol to help prevent further moisture deterioration.

While waiting for that to dry, I finally got a useable oil pump for quart bottle sizes, and drained/refilled the transmission oil. This is the T14 3-speed, which is recommended about two pints of SAE 80w gear oil first and foremost. The TSM also says you can use engine oil, but that's the only place I see that. The 1972 Owner's Manual only says 80w gear oil.

As the headliner had dried, I went to put it in the car. It went in a LOT easier than it came out. The TSM does give a helping handy tip on how to re-assemble it in. The headliner is held primarily in place by two small steel channels with some AMC-specific metal pop clips. The channels have provisions for four clips, with two holes per spot. I suspect the channel gets used on the Hornet too, which has more roof line than the Gremlin, so the Gremlin only has three.

At the start, you have to put the clips so the tab is in the top hole. You then have to pop the clips into the roof. Once that's done, you take the headliner and put the edges inside the channels. Take a moment to make sure the headliner is oriented right, then push the channels upwards so the clip tabs snap into the lower holes. At this point, the headliner is in! Hope you didn't forget to snake the dome light cable over.

At the suggestion of my dad, I got out the carpet cleaner and cleaned up the gunk on my carpets. Wow! See the difference!

Got my dad to help me find the mounting holes for my seat brackets, It's looking great!

Wahoo! Seats are almost in! They look great and I'm excited to drive the car!

hmg,..,,. l ,.,,. leafpool,,.,., i just ADORE her so much her story is just so tragic. grew up with a fairly normal life as a medicine cat but ended up not only falling in love with someone and becoming mates with them (which is against the medicine cat code, they're not allowed to have mates) but the guy she fell in love with was also from a different clan (which is against the warrior code, you're only allowed to have mates within your own clan) AND she had kits with him too (which is ALSO again against the medicine cat code, they aren't allowed to have kits either) and starclan Told Her to give up the kits to her sister squirrelflight who raised them as her own n then!!!!!! the kits found out that squirrelflight and her mate brambleclaw werent their birth parents!!!!!!!!!!!! and leafpool's daughter hollyleaf finds out that leafpool and crowfeather of windclan are the parents of hollyleaf (and her siblings jayfeather and lionblaze) and firestar, thunderclan's leader AND leafpool + squirrelflight's daughter, punishes them BOTH and leafpool is forced to stop being the medicine cat while jayfaether (her son and her apprentice) takes over. and hollyleaf runs off into the tunnels and is presumed dead until the 2nd to last book of the 4th series where she comes back but. she dies!!! in the last book!!!!!! and i hate that she dies bc i so badly wanted her to come back and be a thunderclan warrior and maybe become deputy or something but noOooOoOOOo they killed her off and left the much less interesting jayfeather and lionblaze alive instead KALSJKLKLJG.... anyways after that leafpool becomes the med cat again with jayfeather and she's just kinda there until . she dies in a rockslide with her sister squirrelflight and goes to starclan and has this whole "trial" thing where starclan cats, the SAME ONES who TOLD HER she was DOING THE RIGHT THING WHEN SHE HAD HER KITS, AND THE ONES WHO TOLD HER TO GIVE UP THE KITS, were like "u should have told the truth!!!! actually u shouldnt have had kits in the first place!!!!!!!" and yk whats so funny. the cats who said that were moth flight, the clan's first ever medicine cat, and yellowfang, a former shadowclan turned thunderclan medicine cat. and yknow what? THEY BOTH HAD KITS IN THEIR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THEY WERE THE ONES WHO TOLD LEAFPOOL "u should give up ur kits,,,,,, ur doing the right thing by bringing these kits into the world,,,,,,,"!!!!!! and now they were essentially liek "u should have NEVER had kits!!!!!!!!!! u should have NEVER lied to the clans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now we're gonna send you to kitty cat hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". dovewing's eye color is an Inside Joke within the fandom bc. throughout the 4th and 6th arcs (skipping the 5th bc its a prequel arc) her eye color would switch from being blue to being green back to blue and then to gold at one point, then back to blue and now they're officially green. and ONLY grreen

on the warrior cats wiki there is a whole entire section dedicated to listing every single error in all of the books. i donot think theres been a SINGLE warrior cats book that doesnt have at least one error in it , and these errors can range from simple pelt/eye color/gender mistakes, typos in names or words, or even calling a cat by the wrong name (such as accidentally calling him tigerpaw instead of tigerstar), there are also lots of. retcons! tigerheart in one book will say "i was never around for the great dark forest battle..." even though he litearlly participated in it and was alive WAY way way way before it even happened. its ridiculous but its to be expected when you have a series this big with 50+ characters in thunderclan ALONE that you have to keep track of

in addition to the last fact, the authors actually use the fan wiki, the same one i was just talking about, when writing their books. now tahts not a BAD thing but yknow as an author should you not have. like. your OWN source? of knowledge??? insteasd of going to a fanmade wiki thats using information that could be retconned BY the authors at any time ???? lmao??????????

aaaa hello, i recently found your blog and fell in love w aa again bc of your retro brushes! if it's alright to ask, what are the other brushes you've used like for your lineless art? the subtle textures and edges are so sweet and i'd love to experiment ^^

Ooh hi !! It's totally fine to ask about my other brushes :D I'm putting this under read more because of how long it got though lmao

Thank you for liking my retro brushes! The ones I uploaded aren't actually all the ones I used in that piece. They're actually missing the textured brush I used to recreate the ink texture that riso printing has. I also had to make these brushes myself, but since I used a texture pack that's been uploaded to csp assets (This one, I used the one called solid-uneven tones, which is actually really good on its own!), I wasn't allowed to upload them without violating the rules on the csp site, but you can get it from my google drive here! I could have just used one brush for all four colors considering there's no halftones, but observe:

On your left, the irregularity you're going for would've been the same on all layers, which creates a lot of blank white spots that might be pleasing for some, but it wasn't what I was going for... plus if you move the layers around it sort of creates a 3d effect that might be cool but also ends up being a bit distracting, so I just duplicated the brushes and set the texture rotation to different angles ^^ In the end it's really up to the look you're going for, though. So feel free to experiment!

I also used this vertical line brush that's super fun to play with. You can see how that looks alone in here (I changed the texture's scale ratio, the actual brush has thicker lines and a wider gap between them):

As for most of my lineless art, I actually only use four brushes!

This, for example, was sketched with a modified colored pencil brush that comes default with csp 1.10.9 which you can find here, since it's gone by the version 10.10 update

if you want the exact modifications I did, (since the default brush comes out super light no matter how hard you press) just go into brush tip > brush density > brush density dynamics and change the settings to these! Or however you see fit. The brush engines in csp are surprisingly easy to get the hang of once you've been doing it for a while

I color with two to three brushes! depending on if i want to put in the extra effort or nah

The main brush i use is the flatman soft from @/frenden's megapack which you can find in this post ! It costs maybe 15 bucks? But I believe it's worth it! It might actually be the only brushpack I'm willing to spend some cash on. You get access to so many brushes + any future updates (aka more brushes) so it's a pretty good deal hihi

For softer edges (like blushes, and the fur on this girl's hoodie wahoo) I use either the colored pencil brush from above or the flatman hard from the aforementioned megapack, depending on the kind of "soft edge" I'm going for. colored pencil brush is for anything fuzzy and the flatman hard is good for blending two colors together!

Last brush is the SU-Cream pencil! You can get it over here. I mostly use this for details, like adding lines and drawing the eyes, nose, mouth... the larger it gets the fuzzier it is, too! So you can just as well use it for soft edges if you don't dig the former two brushes

For adding texture to things, I just use this noise texture and the paper texture from this material catalogue ^^ I don't use them much, but I tend to combine the two, and it ends up looking like this, which I think is p neat:

Lastly, did you know you can import abr files to csp? and that adobe gives photoshop subscribers free access to a ton of brushes? and that I don't believe in the inherent elitism and capitalism and anti-ownership mindset that adobe's subscription service model perpetuates?

Anyway, unrelated, but here's a google drive of all the brushes offered by an unnamed over-charging company that I hate that you may or may not be able to use in programs like krita, csp, and procreate

arlo was born in kent, england. i know what you’re wondering, and yes, he does have an accent. :’-) his family moved to new york when he was five years old because arlo’s father was offered a high level position within his company.

arlo was born into a loving family, him being the middle child. he has two supportive parents, sasha edwards (his mother), & carter edwards (his father). there are two years separating him from both his older brother and younger sister. his older brother ( now deceased ) was named holden edwards, and his little sister is named ivy edwards. his older brother can be imagined as eric matthews from boy meets world ( at the end of the day, they were bffs ) & his little sister is quite literally cher horowitz from clueless mixed w/ a splash of bianca stratford from 10 things i hate about you ( they are polar opposites which makes for a fun dynamic !! )

growing up, arlo enjoyed playing all types of sports - there truly wasn’t anything that he wasn’t really good at, and that’s simply because he’s always been such a competitive individual. he would go home and practice a skill or trick for hours in order to be able to come back the next day and whoop everyone’s asses. he will fight you over board games and make alliances in monopoly to mess w/ you.

his interest in taking up an instrument kicked in when he was seven years old. he and his dad were driving back from a hockey game together late at night, and his dad played him the song moby dick by led zeppelin & he knew it was something that he wanted to pursue bc “john bonham was a genius.” ~ arlo vc. and so his dad gifted him a drum set on his eighth birthday !! :’-) soft. but over the years he was exposed to other instruments and can also play the guitar, piano, and he has a nice set of pipes !! harry styles being his vc as well ~ makes it easy. he really wants to learn the saxophone tho??? don’t get him started - he will go on and on and on.

throughout highschoool ; arlo was a v dedicated student. although he’s a bit reckless and loved to goof off, he was always acing classes and applying himself. he genuinely cares for others, you could’ve seen his ass volunteering at a soup kitchen with his mom on sundays and what not! just soft things.

until now - now anti-soft. hard things. sdgjdjgd okay, so, arlo is A Mess™️. and i say that with so much love in my bones. arlo is the type of friend that is honest, and all about tough love when it’s needed. he doesn’t mind getting into a fight or two if he knows its worth the outcome he’s envisioned. he will tell you when you’re fucking up, and if you’re throwing a punch as a result - catch him leaning into it. this ties in l8r !!

he’s just a bit desperate to feel against following the death of his brother & also post-break up with shanley? ( which give me one hot sec and i’ll go into those v soon ) but overall he just wants to feel like himself again, y’know ?? don’t we all. amen & what not. to break it down, he just feels so intensely that he ends up numbing himself in the aftermath of it all, and he’s sadly willing to put himself into harms way in order to get a bit of that - happiness / pain, it doesn’t matter to him as long as he no longer feels numb. so, if ya see him with some scrapes and stitches ~ MIND YA BUSINESS.

arlo’s lurve life : woo ! okay, welcome back -- let’s get into it. so shanley and arlo dated throughout hs and into their first year of college, for a whopping five years together before they broke up. god if you’ve made it this far, i applaud you...but hmu and let me know your fav color, okay? like and comment below ?? subscribe ?? thx. OKAY BACK TO BUSINESS. in case you’re wondering who broke up with who, gosh so nosy, let me just tell you ‘twas arlo. he did it, we can unfollow his ass now. BUT ~ he didn’t want to ? y’know. he felt like due to the long distance, she was missing out on college experiences and her waiting by the phone for him to call was just sad, and he felt guilty. he wanted her to enjoy her time and felt as if he was weighing her down. although he did try make an effort to fix this doing by visiting her that weekend at her university in chicago, but when he came across her with friends he felt stupid and bailed back to cali again. a couple months later he called her, hoping to apologize for his poor judgement and admit to his mistake of ending the relationship, but she wasn’t the one who answered the phone. arlo assumed the random guy who answered was shanley’s new boyfriend (although , he was shanley’s roommates boyfriend but my sad dumb ass boi didn’t know ). arlo only assumed the voice belonged to shan’s bf bc he swears the voice distinctly said “coming, babe!” ( although he did, just not to shanley) and ever since arlo’s been a bit jaded when it comes to romance. shanley called him back later that day, and arlo shrugged her off bc he was jealous af and drunk - claiming he “butt dialed her and it wouldn’t happen again.” :’-( since then they haven’t been in contact.

he was so in love with shanley, and despite him being the one to end things, he’s never fully gotten over her. he’s definitely hooked up with other people, but my boy is not the committing type after that relationship.

after high school, arlo attended stanford university, as they offer one of the best criminal law programs across the nation. wahoo ! yahtzee !

after graduating college, arlo moved to san francisco & moved in with ali !! they have a nice little place overlooking the golden gate bridge w/ quality acoustics for their creative music projects. / also where he currently lives !! :’-) we love a bromance.

while in san francisco, arlo attended university to continue on pursuing his law degree and after two years was able to graduate with his juris doctor.

TRIGGER WARNING : DEATH / CAR ACCIDENT / DRUNK DRIVING. the death of his brother is very recent, like four weeks ago recent. arlo and his brother were road tripping across the states back to their family home in NY to visit their parents, when a drunk driver struck the driver side of their vehicle, which on impact killed his brother. arlo has survivors guilt as a result from the accident. he and his brother had switched seats a couple minutes prior to the collision, after arlo had asked to switch with him in order to rest for a bit. :’-( miraculously, arlo was unscathed in the greater scheme of all things injury-based. he’s entering the villa w/ a couple broken ribs, broken left arm and scrapes/cuts. so plz sign his cast.

post-break up with shanley, they had some type of unspoken agreement of trading off years of who gets to attend the summer( aka who has custody of the sclub ) and so last year, arlo did not attend. however, this year, they somehow got their info wrong about who was going / not going, so they have found themselves here at the same time. this being the first time they’ve seen each other since holidays during their first year of college previous to their break up. so get ready for some spice.

last summer, since arlo wasn’t attending the sclub reunion, he was taking the california state bar exam. which is only offered twice a year - he opted for the one in july and passed! :’-) he spent some time after the exam in europe with hastrid. <3

however, arlo will be joining this summers reunion coming from his parents home, post-funeral, trying to escape boxing up his brothers stuff and wanting to not be pitied. :’-( my boy is going through it, so his typical behavior and personality is gonna be v muted for a while.

overall : arlo truly strives to be kind, and genuinely wants for everyone to get along. treat people with kindness and the like. he has the best of intentions, but often times that can get a bit muddled with the way he goes about things due to his chaotic energy. he will do anything to lighten a dark mood, and will sacrifice / throw himself under the bus if its needed. however, he also is the type to cause the dark mood depending on the day.

however rn, with his current state of mind, arlo is just going through the motions. numbing himself with unhealthy outlets and has a different type of mentality. definitely engaging in a bit of the more chaotic activities, as well as leaving everyone alone to their own vices as well. whereas his typical behavior would be more so attempting to lead them onto a better path if it meant well for their overall wellbeing.

habits : smoking cigarettes ( ali likely nags him bc they aren’t herbal ) . staying up into the early hours of the morning, and yet somehow still an early riser ( hence, he drinks an absurd amount of coffee ). yeah, hence. - get it, from the house bunny? sdjfkngdg any who, he’s in a phase of numbing via alcohol and drugs rn.

the album ‘fine line’ by golden child, harry styles in this case will be used as a hc for arlo. arlo wrote and recorded the album - all songs included, with his muse being shanley over the course of the last couple of years. he’s just kind of been sitting on the entire thing, never really feeling it was the right time to release his work/side solo project...but later this summer, he may just leak it. :’-)

arlo is a vegetarian ! he has been since his freshman year of high school.

LUNA : ali and arlo co-founded the band with friends edie dorn and guy perkins in junior high. playing gigs where they could as often as possible. arlo was on lead vocals, ali as lead guitarist, edie on bass, and guy on drums. although when it came down to recording and what not they seemed to bounce around when it came to other instruments - v experimental. the band took off in college, prior to something strange and over the years they’ve produced numerous albums and have won a couple awards.

red roses are his Thing™️ ; fans of the band will walk up and hand him them. i think that’s soft. and i am here for it.

he loves fancy wine ~ he’s cultured.

fun fact : dirty dancing is v much so a sharlo movie. they used to practice and be able to successfully pull of the jump & lift dance move literally just for fun / bc they wanted to. after nailing the lift, they learned the entire dance - i can't. dfjkgndjkg SOFT.

arlo is a gucci enthusiast - having much of his closet filled with staple pieces over the years. to further his love for the brand, he was recently asked to be in an upcoming campaign for the fall season - he’s v jazzed about it.

𝖌𝖔𝖔𝖉 𝖎𝖓𝖋𝖑𝖚𝖊𝖓𝖈𝖊 ( open connection ) : with arlo being a bit chaotic in nature, he needs somebody that is likely going to steer him clear from all the ideas that’ll bring him to the brink of disaster. he’s impulsive and in that desperate attempt to feel again, he’s very likely to bring a bit of mayhem upon himself. so while they may constantly worrying and attempting to talk his ideas down, he’s trying to get them to go along with his plan. it may be rare that he actually takes their advice, but when he does it seems to be for the best.

𝖕𝖆𝖗𝖙𝖞 𝖋𝖗𝖎𝖊𝖓𝖉 / 𝖈𝖔𝖓𝖋𝖎𝖉𝖆𝖓𝖙 ( open connection ) : these two know how to have a good time together. despite the amount of alcohol they are throwing back and the shenanigans they find themselves in as a result, this is a time where they also find themselves confiding in one another. if you look at their camera rolls, it’s likely they have tons of embracing and unflattering videos and pics of one another, in between their sob-worthy confessionals and venting/rants. these two trust one another, and although they love getting wreckT together, they find themselves discussing very raw and personal details.

𝖆 𝖇𝖗𝖔𝖒𝖆𝖓𝖈𝖊 𝖋𝖔𝖗 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖆𝖌𝖊𝖘 ( taken - ali mallick ) : as if living together for the past two years wasn’t enough, ali & arlo are also roommates every summer that arlo attends the sclub reunions. these two are always laughing, and saying some ridiculous ish. you’ll likely hear loud jam sessions and howling laughter / the occasional excited shouting back and forth from their room in the late hours. they are truly nothing but a good time and tbh, they know it. that and the fact that they have the best hair in the villa. djfgnjkdfg FIGHT ME !!

𝖍𝖎𝖌𝖍 𝖘𝖈𝖍𝖔𝖔𝖑 𝖘𝖜𝖊𝖊𝖙𝖍𝖊𝖆𝖗𝖙𝖘 ( taken - shanley evans ) : these two began their relationship in their freshman year of high school - spending five years together before breaking up in their freshman year of college. * cries in sharlo * they were the “it” couple, no pennywise included … unless ? anyways, everyone thought that they were going to get married, and arlo was v much in love / thinking shanley was his romantic soulmate. yet when they did break up everyone was shookith - even the birds and the bees.

𝖛 𝖘𝖎𝖇𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖌-𝖑𝖎𝖐𝖊 𝖗𝖊𝖑𝖆𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓𝖘𝖍𝖎𝖕 ( taken - sirena rose / willow finch ) : these two have a love/hate relationship, very sibling like filled with pranks, competition, teasing and playful banter. however, when it comes down to it they have so much love and respect for one another. they know that no matter what happens they will always have one anothers back and be supportive of the other. pure relationship.

𝖗𝖎𝖉𝖊 𝖔𝖗 𝖉𝖎𝖊 ( taken - delilah jacobs ) : ride or dies ! need i say more ?? these two have one anothers backs despite anything and everything going on otherwise. they play in to one anothers antics and enjoy one anothers presence as they can likely be seen dragging one another across town and causing a bit of mayhem together. you can catch them in their beautiful, bitch #1 & #2 tee's.

Editing tips, I guess?

Hey uhhhhh, so I've gotten lots of new followers over the past few weeks and wanted to do some kind of thank you?? Also, I have seen a fair share of "omg HOW" in the tags on my edits (which??? always make my day?? my week??? my life????)

Anyway, I thought I'd share some of my ~techniques with y'all? So here goes:

(lmao this got really fuckin long so cuuuuuut)

1. Make EVERYTHING a Smart Object

Okay, maybe not EVERYTHING, but seriously. Do it. It will save ur editing life. You ever shrink something down and then an hour later change your mind and decide you want it bigger? If you're not using a smart object, it’ll get blurry when you scale it back up and you’ll be fuCKED!

To make a layer/group a smart object, just right click on it in the layers panel and select "convert to smart object". This makes Photoshop store the layer's original data in a separate space for safe keeping (an embedded .psb file, to be exact) -- so you can shrink it and enlarge it as many times as you want without any lossiness.

As soon as I paste/place a screencap, texture, or whatever into my document, the first thing I always, ALWAYS do is convert it to a smart object!!

Why, you might ask?? Continue to item No.2 :)))

2. Harness the POWER of Smart Objects!!

The reason I am obsessed with Smart Objects is because I am obsessed with making any edits as non-destructive as possible. If you use “Image > Adjustments > Levels/Selective Color/etc” on a regular layer, that’s a destructive edit. Same goes for any Filters (such as blur/sharpen) and transforms (Warp, distort, perspective). You lose the original data that was there and the only way it can be undone is with ctrl+z. Might not seem like a huge deal at first, but if you keep chugging along for an hour and decide, “hmm, maybe i went too hard on that levels adjustment after all...” your only options are deleting the layer and starting over, or uh... hoping it’s still in your history panel.

However, it's really easy to avoid destructive edits when you use smart objects!! Because all those adjustments, filters, and transforms become “Smart Filters”. Smart Filters have all the non-destructive advantages of performing these adjustments via adjustment layers, but have the added bonus of ONLY effecting the layer they’ve been applied to, instead of cascading down and effecting all the layers beneath. (Which can be a good thing sometimes, but that’s a whole other topic)

Smart filters are attached to their ‘parent layers’, and can be hidden, deleted, or modified (by double-clicking their names) at any time:

Other cool things about Smart Objects:

You can copy a Smart Filter with all its settings to another layer by alt+click+dragging it over

You can change the order in which Smart Filters are applied by clicking and dragging them around

You can edit a smart object independently/in a sort of 'isolated' mode by double-clicking on its thumbnail!! I like to use this for edits that are specific to a given screencap-- like cutting out the background and any initial adjustments, like levels and selective coloring. Once you’re done editing the contents of the smart object, hit ctrl+s and it will automatically update in the main document!

But really, the biggest thing for me here is psychological. I know I’m much more willing to try things and experiment when I know that I can easily go back and tweaks things at any time. Otherwise, I’d stick with adjustments I don’t really like all that much simply because it would take too much time/effort to redo them.

3. Don't even THINK ABOUT using the eraser tool or I will STOMP YOU to death with my hooves!!

Use a layer mask instead. Please I am begging you. It all comes back to making your edits as non-destructive as possible. If you erase something, it's gone forever. When you mask something, you can make changes to which parts are visible/not visible as often as you want.

For the newbies or the otherwise unacquainted, a mask is a greyscale ‘map’ attached to a layer (or layer group) that controls its opacity. Black areas give the layer 0% opacity, white areas will give it 100% opacity, and you can use shades of grey to achieve partial transparency. You ‘draw’ on these layers with the your trusty brush and paint bucket tools.

You can create a mask by selecting a layer and then clicking the little mask icon at the bottom of the layers panel (it’s the one with the little circle inside the box). Draw black on the parts you want to hide, and if you erase too much on accident? Just paint back over it with white!

I love masks, and sometimes i will throw an already masked layer inside a layer group and apply a second mask to said group. This way I have two masks that can be edited independently from each other. Like layer mask-ception.

So anyway, yes. Eraser tool? Don’t know her.

4. Try using channels to create masks!

This is a technique that works REALLY well for cutting out complex shapes, such as wispy hair (or feathers!) -- provided there's strong contrast between the subject and the background, and the background isn't too busy.

This is also a fantastic method for capturing alpha transparency. For example: If you have a neato paint stroke/splatter/watercolor texture you want to use as a mask, but has a solid background that’s getting in the way of things. This method will capture all the semi-opaque areas flawlessly!!

While editing your image (which you had better have made into a Smart Object!!!) do the following:

Switch from the "layers" panel to the "Channels" panel.

Toggle through the R, G, and B channels, and decide which one has the most contrast for the areas you are trying to mask.

Ctrl+Click that channel's thumbnail. This will create a selection marquee.

Switch back to the layers panel

Click on the target layer/group (the one you are trying to mask)

Click the mask icon at the bottom of the panel (the one with the circle inside a box)

Release the selection and invert the mask if necessary

If you're using this method to cut out a subject from its background, you probably won't want alpha transparency. In this case, select the mask thumbnail and use a levels adjustment on the mask itself to bump the contrast until you have more of a cutout effect!

It sounds like a lot of steps, but it’s really simple! So I made this handy GIF: (click to view from beginning)

Sometimes you won’t want to use this method for the entire image, but just a specific part. For example, if you’ve cut out a character with some other method (magic wand, manual brushwork), but are having a hard time with their hair in particular. Use this method to create the selection, but instead of converting the whole selection into a mask, use the brush tool to apply the mask only where you need it! You can invert the selection itself with shift+ctrl+i.

5. Outlining text

The font I used here is Salomé, which is actually a solid typeface with no outlined version. But you can make virtually any font into an outlined version if you so desire!

There's two possible methods here, actually:

The Easy Way:

Add a stroke layer effect to the text layer (by selecting the layer, clicking the little “fx” button at the bottom of the layers panel, and choosing “Stroke...”)

As far as settings go, aligning the stroke to the inside usually yields the best result/maintains the integrity of the letterforms.

Make the color of the text itself match the background.

If necessary, use the lighten/darken blend modes to create the illusion of transparency.

If you need true transparency (which I didn't until I decided I wanted to apply a gradient over the text), you'll have to try something else-- The Also Easy But Less Than Ideal Way:

Right click the text layer in the layers panel and select "convert to shape".

Now you can edit the fill/stroke the same way you would any other vector shape.

Again, you’ll want to set the stroke alignment to ‘inside’. For vector shapes, those settings are a little hidden. You’ll wanna open up that little dropdown in the toolbar with the line in it, and click “More Options”.

This is semi-destructive, so if you're working with a lot of text you might have to edit later, consider duplicating and hiding those text layers first so you'll have a 'backup' of it.

And while I’m on the topic of text...

6. Try breaking up your text layers!

I know a lot of people like to draw a neat little text box to put their text in, and then they center it all nice and neat and probably use a small font size to make it subtle and stuff... and that’s cool. Everyone’s got their different styles and things they like to emphasize in their edits and there’s absolutely merit to that sort of thing (case and point: the bulk of my dear @herzdieb’s work), but. Listen.

I love typography. I love a good typeface. The stroke widths, the letterforms, the ligatures, the serifs... I get like, horny on main for a good typeface. I like to make the text on my edits BIG, so that those details can shine. I also like doing interesting things with the text. Jumbling words/letters around, distorting them, deconstructing them and just... letting the text really ~interact with the rest of the composition instead of just kinda politely floating on top of it.

I’m not saying you have to do that kinda stuff. Or that I think neat little floaty text boxes are boring, or lazy, or whatever. It’s just... personally, I get really inspired by type. Fun type treatments are one of those things I LIVE FOR, something of a ~signature of mine, and I encourage everyone to just... try it? To use text as more of an integral Design Element and less of a... idk. A caption?

So if you have a quote, or even just a word... put each word (or letter) on its own text layer. And then: make ‘em different sizes. Make the words so big they don’t fit on the canvas. Rotate each one at a fun angle. Scatter them around. Go nuts. Use masks to chop parts of the letterforms off. Make ‘em overlap. Just have at it. Or, as the kids these days are saying: go absolutely fuckin feral.

If that really just isn’t your style, or doesn’t work/make sense for the edit you’re doing, fine. Delete all the layers and just do a text box or whatever. But. I’m tellin u.

Give it a try.

At least once.

Just... a lil taste.

7. Understand the difference between lighten/darken vs screen/multiply

For a while in my photoshoppin' youth, my understanding of these blend modes basically amounted to "darken makes things darker, and multiply makes things really darker", and vice versa for lighten/screen. But there's an important difference between how these blend modes work, and if you understand them, you can use them more... strategically? I guess?

Darken and Lighten are kinda misnomers tbh, because they technically don't really darken or lighten anything. What they actually do is make it so that only the areas of the layer that are darker or lighter than the content of the layers beneath them are visible. This produces some pretty nifty layering effects that you can't achieve with screen and multiply.

Here’s an example: (if you’re reading this on a phone with the brightness dimmed down you probably won’t be able to see the differences)

Without any the texture applied, you can really see the noise/graininess of Crowley’s jacket in the screencap. You can also see the ‘seam’ where Crowley fades into the background-- the jacket is a green-ish black, while the background it’s fading into is more of a purple-black.

With the texture set to ‘Screen’, the whole image becomes lighter across the board. Crowley’s jacket gets lighter, and so does Aziraphale’s jacket and the pink cloud thing. This does little to nothing to obscure the poor image quality and disguise that ‘seam’.

But with the ‘Lighten’ blend mode, ONLY the dark parts of the image appear lightened, and not only do they appear lightened, but they get kinda equalized. Notice how the patchy jpeg artifacts on Crowley’s jacket disappear, how that color seam smooths out, and how the brightness of Aziraphale’s jacket and the pink cloud doesn’t change at all.

This isn’t to say that lighten/darken are better and that you shouldn’t use screen/multiply. They each have their uses. But most often, I find myself using lighten/darken because the way they work is honestly really helpful? And just cool af?

8. Masking individual frames on gifs

If you ever feel like torturing yourself by making a gif that has frame-by-frame masking, my advice is don't try to mask each frame from scratch. You'll get patchy/wobbly results from the masks being slightly different on each frame.

Instead, mask the first frame, then alt+click and drag that mask onto the next frame. Make any minor adjustments to the new mask as needed, and repeat for each frame. This saves time and more importantly, keeps the masking consistent on areas with little to no movement, which makes a HUGE difference in how smooth the final product will be.

If you look at the edges of the animation, they’re nice and steady and consistent. It’s only the parts that have a lot of movement (like the back of his neck) where you can see any ‘ghosting’/wobbly-ness happening.

Sometimes the mask will move when I copy it to the next frame. Like, for the whole document. It gets nudged 20 pixels down or to the left or s/t every time. I have yet to figure out why, but I’m betting it has something to do with shooting myself in the foot with the frame 1 propagation settings at some point during editing?? ANYWAY, when this happens, just unlock the mask from its layer (click the little chain icon between their thumbnails) and move it back into place.

In these cases, I also like to pick a spot with a hard edge (such as the shoulder in the above gif) as a reference point of where it needs to be moved to. It kinda sucks having to do this for every frame, but you already signed up for some suckage when u decided to mask every frame of a gif, so I mean... 👀

9. Don't be afraid/too intimidated to do manips as needed!

Manips can be tricky if you're really striving for realism. There's light sources and color grading and perspectives to reconcile!! But when you're doing an artsy Edit with a capital E, odds are those kinds of discrepancies will be thoroughly camouflaged by all the levels, black and white, etc adjustments you're doing!

Something I run into often is, "I like this screencap, but the top of their head/hair is chopped off :(" But if I go back through all the screencaps from the scene, there's usually another frame where the camera is planned/zoomed out enough that I can steal the rest of their head/limb from it! And since it's from the same scene/shot, the lighting and color grading should already be a perfect match!

A super simple example:

So I wanted to use this picture of David and Michael for this edit, but 1) They’re standing on the wrong sides for their characters, and 2) part of David’s arm is covered up by Michael’s.

Of course, the easiest course of action would be to just mirror the photo so they’re on the correct sides, but 1) mirroring faces tends to yield wonky results, and 2) that still wouldn’t give me a perfect, free-standing cutout of Crowley to place wherever I want in my composition (as opposed to being forced to awkwardly position him off the edge of the canvas to hide the fact that the other arm is missing)

Fortunately, it only took all of like, two (2) minutes to draw a crude selection around his good arm, copy and paste it into a new layer, flip it around, and add any necessary masking to get the shape right.

My point here isn’t to teach y’all how to do manips, or to pass this off as an impressive example of one. Because it’s really, REALLY not. My point here is to demonstrate that even something as tiny and simple as this can really open up your options for what you can actually do with an edit/composition.

So next time you’re feeling limited/inconvenienced by the crop of a screencap, just... you know. Consider whether or not it’s worth attempting a quick and dirty manip to fix it.

Another Example:

Sometimes you’re torn between two screencaps. You like one element from Screencap A but also want some other element from Screencap B. What to do? Just frankenstein ‘em together. Layer one on top of the other, get them lined up, and mask out the necessary parts.

It’s easy to get hung up on stuff like “Uh... should Crowley’s shoulder be doing that?” but let me assure you that like... the people looking at the final product are none the wiser to your butcherwork and will not notice. Especially if you’re going to add a bunch of contrast and color adjustments later on. (in fact, sometimes I’ll apply those adjustments first so I’m not distracted by any discrepancies that are going to come out in the wash anyway)

“I dunno... 🤔🤔 doesn’t seem anatomically correct... 🤔🤔🤔🤔” thought no one.

Point is... point is... dolphins you can get away with a LOT more than you think you can. Don’t let the desire to make these kinds of manips perfect get in the way of just... making them good enough. The bar isn’t that high, I promise.

10. Know what inspires you

What types of edits get you EXCITED? What kind of work do you see on your dash and go, "oh, I'm reblobbin' THAT!!1!"

I know for herzdieb, she's all about emotional pieces. She likes matching words/lyrics/poetry to on-screen moments and punching you in the feels with both. She hears a song, or reads a poem, and the lightbulbs go off for her, and she does her thing.

As for myself, I just live for the aesthetics of an edit. The colors, the fonts, the composition. I almost never know what text/screencaps I'm going to use when I start an edit. I just see a font I like, or a color palette, or a texture, and think, "I wanna use that!"

And once you know what inspires you, collect that inspo! I hoard textures and fonts. I have them organized into neat lil folders. When I wanna make an edit, that’s where I start. I just browse through them all until one or two start calling my name. Herzdieb collects songs and quotes and poems. Maybe your thing is color palettes, or aesthetic-y photos. Or whatever.

The point here is make the kinda stuff you like/want to see. Not the kinda stuff everyone else is making or the kinda stuff you notice gets the most notes.

11. Be able to let go of things that aren't working

I often begin an edit with a rough idea of the style, colors, or layout I'm going for. And I almost always end up doing... something totally different.

So don't get too fixated on what your initial ideas are. Be open to experimenting and just let the edit be what it wants to be. If something looks nice, do it. If it doesn't, don't try to force it just because, "well, I was inspired by this piece that did xyz and I wanna try it too".

When you see a certain effect that inspires you, just keep it in mind as a possible solution for the next time you make something-- don't make it into a benchmark, or some imaginary 'goal' you have to meet for This Edit You Are Working On Right This Moment. In fact, sometimes the elements I end up ditching are the very ones I started with, that initially sparked my inspiration. And that's okay. Inspiration can be a moving target, and if your vision for something changes, let it.

You might be thinking, “how the fUCK was that the inspiration??!! Your edit looks nothing like that at all!” ...and you would be 100% correct, and that is 100% my point. I spent a good hour or two trying to incorporate that cutout text layering effect before finally accepting the fact that it just wasn’t working for the edit I was making. And it wasn’t until then that it actually started to come together.

12. Be patient, and take the time to explore all your options!

I’m not gonna lie, y’all. I spend hours on my edits. I usually complete them over the course of 2-3 days/sittings. I rarely have a plan. 99% of the time I'm just throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks. When I get stuck (when, not if), it helps to step away from it and come back later with a fresh perspective/set of eyes.

Every single edit I've posted, I have at some point felt like giving up on because I thought it looked like garbage (and not just because I was being self-deprecating/doubting myself, but because at those points, they simply weren't finished/something about the composition just wasn't working for me)

Work through those moments, and if necessary, take a break/sleep on it. It's always after I've exhausted my early ideas that the really good ones start to come to mind!

Here’s how the character poster edits I did progressed:

In Classic Me™ Fashion, I literally started off with just... textures I liked, and a font that I liked. Now, there were obviously a lot more ‘steps’ involved in both designs, but hopefully at the very least this gives a sense of how things get from point A to point B.

Day 5 - August 5

My body decided that it was so sore that I had to wake up early...and by early that meant the first time I checked the clock, it was 4:40am. My last few hours of sleep were certainly not ideal, but I eventually "got up" around 7:15. I knew I wasn't actually in three of the four dances we were learning today, and SO that meant I'd be able to work on other stuff. Still getting things done, however!

My breakfast was very. good. And anybody who wants to fight me on avocado toast, I dare you. This was incredible. I sprinkled some sea salt and pepper on it, as well as a bit of lemon, and I just...wow???

Along with the egg and toast, I made another smoothie (blueberries, frozen peaches, banana, spinach, and cran-grape juice). Not the prettiest color, but it tasted very good! Making sure I'd packed my meals with proper ice packs this time, I headed out a bit later than usual, which was okay, as I just did the warm-up with the group and then headed back over to the main theatre. The morning rehearsal ended up being mostly sorting greenery (lots and LOTS of ferns), but that's okay! I still got stuff done.

Lunch was mushroom alfredo pasta. Very delicious. I forgot a fork, but luckily one of the faculty there had a stash because a senior who graduated last year apparently did this same thing a lot. WHOOPSIE! Some friends and I got to talking about a show we did last year, so that was fun!

Afternoon rehearsal was a bit tiresome, but we got a whole number choreographed, that number being the finale! It was v v v rough, but still choreographed. After that was done...I got to go home??? That's the thing about having a bigger part—oftentimes you end up dancing much less, which is big sad, but give and take! That's why ensemble is so flipping fun, y'all.

After sitting and being sore for a while at home, I ate my dinner (berry chicken salad with avocado...very good) and then decided to go buy some cosplay stuff for Disney Week. I'm making a shell top for my mermaid bit, and I ordered/bought some stuff for Punzie. Wahoo! By the time I got home (also with ice cream...I have no self control oops), I was a bit jazzed to do something else, so after I showered and stuck my hair in pin-curls (we'll see the results tomorrow, I want to see if I can just do that for my show hair), I filmed some stuff for fun. Because I needed the break. And from my last post, y'all saw what I did. I love Gwen very much, and this suit is just...yes.

And that was the day! As I typed this, I got the schedule for tomorrow, so...here's hoping for another good day.

It's Not Childish

Earth. Home of many things; the paladins, meaningless words, memes and many other things. But what some of the paladins missed about their dear planet was the changing seasons. The fresh air in spring, the cool drinks in summer, the 21st night of September, and the cold air that nips on your nose when you leave the comforts of your warmth. But one things about this time of year. When the air starts to cool down, sky turns a shade darker ever so often, and the change in nature. This time of year when the leaves fall off and start to blow in the soft breeze. Where the leaves are gathered in a pile and jumped in for fun and a socially acceptable thing.

It was common on Earth, the true home of leaf jumping.

Now, it’s time to visit our guardians, proud heroes of many galaxies. What started as a conversation about childhood memories ended up with trying to search high and low for a experience they wish to recreate.

For once the paladin's were free. Not being needed for the universe was a rarity nowadays, a small blessed miracle for them. Lance was sprawled out on the couch, one of his legs over the back part, hands folded on his stomach, a relaxed expression on his face. Hunk was sitting next him, slouching while reading a book. Pidge had a the glass communicator in her hands, concentrating on the game, tongue slightly sticking out and a large pout on her face. Keith sharpening his blade while he sat with one leg propped out against his chest. Allura quietly playing with her delightful mice, smiling while they performed tricks with each other for her. Shiro decided to sleep for once, ‘to be alert for the next mission’. Coran drifted off after two seconds.

The teens finally being able to, well, just be teens.

It wasn’t soon after that Allura turned to look at Lance and asked, “What can you tell me about ‘fall’? I’ve heard it from you people but never heard much about it.” Lance’s head shot up immediately and he started grinning from ear to ear. ”There’s a lot to talk about fall,” he started while looking distant, “The holidays,” Hunk looked up from his book, deciding to chirp in his input, “The delicious foods, no more hot summer days-” Pidge muttered quietly, barely paying any attention, “Usually new cool stuff for decorations and stuff. Trick or treating is cool too.” Hunk and Lance made an ‘mmm” sound of agreement. Keith stayed quiet the whole time, seeming not to be listening much. Allura gazed at the three as they all chatted among themselves about their favorite things about fall.

“My grandma helped make me the best Halloween costumes, I was a cool pirate once!” Lance announced excitedly as he sat up completely. Leaning against his right leg that he bent.

Hunk raised his hand, “Hands down, my family’s costume game was the best in the neighborhood.” He grinned in satisfaction and pointed his thumbs at himself.

“Well, I don’t really celebrate Halloween too much since most adults think that I’m-” she rolled her eyes and did air quotes, “-’too mature to be doing childish things’. But I mostly remember Matt pushing me into a pile of leaves in every front yard with a pile of leaves.”

Lance laughed hard at that as did Hunk. Imagining a smaller Pidge in a sheet ghost costume being pushed into a leaf pile while yelping. Allura looked confused as she shifted slightly to look at them better. “Why would you pile a bunch of leaves then jump in them,” she questioned while tilting her head slightly. Keith finally stopped sharpening his knife and turned towards all four of them with a slight frown. “It

Lace took offence to that before shouting, “Jumping in leaves is fun! What? Don’t tell me that you’ve never jumped in a leaf pile before! It’s fun!” Keith’s ears turned slightly red and he grunted before going back to sharpen his knife again. Lance’s mouth went wide open in shock and glanced at Hunk who had his eyes widened slightly as Pidge made a frustrated noise as her video game character died. In a soft tone Hunk murmured, “You’ve never jumped in a leaf pile before Keith?” Keith didn’t answer and continued to sharpen it slightly faster before huffing and standing up. “I’m going to go train,” he huffed out grumpily as he walked out of the room. No one made a sound for a few moments before Allura pointed at the door Keith used. “Is that a answer?”

“Yeah,” muttered Lance as he stared at the door in a slight daze. He quickly turned to the others with a determined stare. Making eye contact with all of them “We’re going to have Keith be able to experience falling in a leaf pile!” he glanced sheepishly at Allura, “And you of course.” Allura nodded her thanks and Lance immediately launched into a discussion with all of them to help form a plan.

It took longer than expected to actually do the plan. But it was finished.

Allura poked her head innocently into the training room where Keith was. A few minutes of him battling before he noticed her staring at him. After turning it off he jogged lightly towards her. “Is something wrong?” She shook her head and just told him, “Follow me.” He did as she commanded and followed her. Down hallways, through quiet rooms and finally into an elevator. No one else was spotted the whole time, not a single other person was seen. They stood in silence, Keith feelings a bit out of place as Allura had not said anything for awhile now. “So.... What is this about?” Allura just looked at him with a smile, “Something pleasant.” Still not satisfied Keith looked forward at the doors, but before they opened Allura had covered his eyes. He nearly jumped back in surprise before she said, “This is a trust exercise Coran has made. Please keep your eyes closed and do as I say.” Keith nodded slowly, “Yeah, okay, I trust you. Can you now take your hands off?” She obeyed and stepped back. When he heard the doors slide open he stood still. Waiting.

“Walk forward until I tell you to stop.” Keith’s footsteps echoed around the large room as he walked forward slowly. It wasn’t long before Allura’s voice called out to stop him. He stood completely still. “I want you to jump.” He made a face. “What? Why?” When she didn’t answer he sighed and jumped.

Landing in a pile of something crunchy. Splitting into hundreds of pieces and going everywhere. It was soft enough that he felt the ground beneath him also tall enough that it reached his waist as he jumped up and stood. He spit out some before opening his eyes to see himself in the pool. But instead of water it was leaves. From what he assumed was different planets as they ranged from different colors and sizes. It was surprisingly…. Fun. Now that he knew what he was in. He glanced up to look at Allura but was slightly shocked. The other teens were there too, standing next to each other with bright eyes and wide smiles on their faces. Lance smirked. “So.., Was that fun or what?”

Keith glanced away for a second. “Yeah…” He muttered softly. “I guess.” With laughs all around the other paladins jumped in. “CANON BALL,” Hunk cried out as he took a running start into the pile. Lance grabbed Allura’s hand and they jumped in together while laughing loudly. Pidge had activated her bayonet and used it to swing herself inside while yelling “WAHOO!”

While the time they were in there they threw the leaves at each other, went out and jumped back in, using Pidge’s bayonet to swing themselves around, randomly ducking under the leaves before tossing another into the leaves and just pure fun. Jokes were shared, laughter echoed around the four walls, smiles tossed around. A memorable experience for all of them.

Let’s just say that Keith doesn’t find jumping in leaf piles childish anymore.
