Rewatching voltron

I’m only on season one and- I want to filter my thoughts I guess

Okay so full disclosure-

I forgot most of Voltron and I wanted to watch it again just to see where it went wrong + maybe rewrite it. Most of this list is grievances and high praises. But yknow- it’s fun for me.

Hunk deserves better

Of course best boy is going first

I distinctly remember from the end of voltron that hunk didn’t have alot of moments to shine. I’m only in episode 5 as of writing this point and I see SO MUCH PROMISE. He’s a great middle man, he’s loyal as hell, and he’s so smart! The following seasons are gonna be painful for me I know it.

That’s it. That’s the red talk.

The “we make a good team” line + TW: Klance in general

Holy shit us Klance shippers were sooooo desperate. Like- my god. We fucking ran with that shit to the universe and back god damn. And it all started from that one line. I don’t know if I should be proud or disappointed my god.

Since we’re talking about this ship- there are a lot of missed opportunities for Keith and Lance’s dynamic and individual character. Like, I think, we all forget that Lance was the person who came up with the plan, when him and Keith were supposed to sabotage the galra forces at Balmera (living mining planet). Lance was actively aware of the planets saltines and he stopped kids from acting on his impulses, resulting in them (initially) covertly deactivating  the hanger so they can prevent further reinforcements.

I also don’t like how the scene introduces Keith’s heritage. I understand that this is a set up for a greater plot point and we’re not really supposed to know how Keith activates galra tech but- fuck I need to go on a tangent in the later seasons if I go along with this series of blog posts, I guess

I do not know how old these fuckers are and that is concerning. The only information I have on age is one of the Galra generals calling Pidge a child when they were taking over the castle. Like- Voltron please tell me how old these mfs are.

I have my own HCs ofc but like- CMON.

Speaking of, Pidge is giving 14-16, Hunk, Lance, Keith and Allura are giving 17 to 18, Shiro is giving 18-25, and Coran is at a good 34-40 not including the 10000 year long freeze Allura and Coran went through

Minor characters

I love the tribal civilization at inhabits allura’s home planet

The POWs, Shay’s people, the mercenaries, I love all of these guys

I like how the planets are alive

Just- good job Voltron for universe building

The lions are their own characters

I really like the idea of the lions being specific with who they allow in as their pilots. However, I wish that the selectiveness was a longer process. And key situation it was a life or death one. It felt like the redline had to actively choose, whether or not to save him from the deep vacuum of space. Meanwhile, for pitch it was just oh hop in and get going you know. Same with Shiro I get that he unlocked the synchronicity of the lien and pilot relationship immediately, but it feels too give in.

Piggybacking off of that I don’t like that Alura basically assigns the paladins Hogwarts houses as soon as she sees them. I think that’s bullshit. I got that she grew up with the lions and was born shortly after their creation but still. 

I also like how during battle of the lines actively recommend which strategies and weapons, the pilot should use, and which ones they refused to go along with

Also- element powers?? I miss those

Idk the yellow goo before being refined into quintessence having healing properties- WHY WAS THAT FORGOTTEN??? That could’ve been huge! Even if it only applies to galuras

Also- god I wish there was rules for Allurans powers and wtf quintessence is.

The Black Lion (the episode not the actual mech)

The main conflict being tied to Shiro connection w/ his lion is a great plot point

Saw your post about sexism in the fandom made an account just to say that while the hermitcraft/empires community is generally kinder to its female CCs there is a concerning trend towards girlbossification (for lack of a better term) instead of the sister-racist dichotomy you mentioned. Even more noticeably feminine-presenting streamers are given the same sort of boyish appearance you discussed in regards to DSMP women, with the exception of ZombieCleo who has stated that they likes curvier portrayals of themself.

On the bright side, lore by female streamers in the community get far more attention from the community than for the DSMP from what I’ve seen. The amount of appreciation for 5AM Pearl and Cleo’s role in the series is refreshing. Personal bias speaking, but Cleo’s knack for roleplaying really shines in that series. The amount of content for groups or storylines that involve her such as Gaslight/Gatekeep/Girlboss, Fairy Fort, Divorce Quartet and Crastle (+Etho), while still less than that for those that involve more popular male CCs (ex. Team BEST especially BE, Dogwarts, Desert Duo - may be due to season 1 bias), makes me hopeful.

While M/F ships used to overshadow the female CCs themselves in the past (ex. Iskall/Stress, Joe/Cleo), it’s nice to see that female CC’s dynamic with their male counterparts is now treated with more respect (ex. Soup Group appreciation). The community does fixate a lot on M/M ships though.

All that to say, if you’re into dark or dry humor, check out ZombieCleo’s channel and aroaceacacia’s amazing art of her in Last Life. Sorry for the long word salad ask I think? I’m new to this site from Reddit so I don’t know the law of the land.

thanks for sending the hermit side of things! im not super familiar with it but ive seen enough of the fandom on here to suspect that you're right-- i also think hermitblr/hermit enjoyers generally have the benefit that there's more female ccs and less overall fame, so they see more women and have less of the trickle down effect from twitter & the general misogynistic gaming culture.

fanart is a hard one for any fandom because people are really bad at drawing anyone who isnt thin and white and a dude and often refuse to learn; im glad zombiecleo's stuck up for herself and told people off for drawing her skinny.

m/m shipping has always dominated fandom-- from the origins of slash fiction with star trek (yes, fandom pretty much began with star trek. any fic trope you can think of is from star trek) to voltron m/m is across the board more popular for the reasons i listed in my post. people are scared to depict women in genuine romantic and sexual relationships and more than that they often just don't care. glad to hear female ccs arent defined by their shipping dynamics though!

tbh if im ever gonna dip my toes into hc or any of the ccs itll probably be with cleo or pearl, so thank you for the rec! im hoping to watch a bit of empires soon (probably scott and shubble) so if anyone has recs for esmp as well lmk!

1950′s Keith and Lance

Here’s some HCs I have for a Klance 1950′s (minus the homophobia) AU that no one wants but I made anyways

Will I write a full-length fic for this?  Maybe, probably, but not anytime soon

Keith goes to help out his uncle’s farm for a summer

He did that bc the uncle he lives with said he needed to get out more

So he works collecting eggs and tending to their livestock and eventually gets to drive the machinery to harvest crops

Well one day there is a cow in one of the fields and Keith is just “uuhhhh that’s not ours”

It ends up it belongs to the neighboring farm so Keith has to go find the owner so the cow can be returned

Que Keith meeting a wonderful woman hanging laundry to dry with her little children

He tells her one of her cows in loose and she calls one of her sons

Cue Lance entering the yard

Cue Keith’s vision only being able to focus on that beautiful boy in front of him

So Keith leads Lance to the cow and they get her home

Lance has worked on that dairy farm with his family ever since he could remember and a cow had never wondered that far

Thus starts a bit of a summer romance for Keith and Lance

They don’t see each other often, but when they do, they try their best to make their flirting subtle

Then Keith has to go back into town bc school is starting and Lance realizes he never actually got anywhere with him

So Lance invites Keith out to his church’s end of summer ice cream social and Keith agrees, though he had never been to an ice cream social of any kind

Keith brings his cousin Shiro as support, and so he would have someone to talk to

Shiro and Keith are the only two there who don’t live in the area

All the kids go to their opposite high school and it’s obvious everyone lives on some sort of farm

Lots of eyes are on Shiro bc 1) he drives a sports car, 2) he’s missing an arm, and 3) he’s sexy af

Lance finds Keith and hands him a Root Beer float and they find a table to sit and chat at

All the girls are surrounding Shiro bc he’s older and so handsome in leather and his car is expensive and he used to be the captain of his high school’s football team

Little they know he’s dating Allura, the mayor’s daughter

Keith and Lance hit it off and after that Keith come to pick Lance up about once a week for a date

Sometimes it’s rollerskating or the movies of local events near Lance’s house

Lance is blown away when Keith takes him to dances and little concerts at Keith’s favorite diner bc he never gets to go to things like that

Lance takes Keith to secret hang out spots near his property as sort of “dates”

There’s a lake with a rope swing they go swimming in and place in the woods with wild raspberries growing

Lance takes Keith to the county fair and Keith wins Lance big stuffed bears but also gets sick on roller coasters

They make out in the back of Keith’s (Shiro’s) car as much as possible so if someone sees that car parked off the road in the dark, there is a 99% chance Keith has Lance pinned down in the back seat and each has at least their shirts off

Pretty much Lance falls head over heels in love with a boy he thought was just going to be a summer fling, and Keith gets soft for the farm boy he thought he wouldn’t see after that summer

Pidge is the first person to recognize that they’re returning on a holiday. Lance and Hunk join in on the excitement, which prompts a culturally curious Lotor to ask about this “Halloween.”

Lotor is deeply fascinated by the holiday’s origins in Samhain and in the belief that the barriers between worlds lose strength.

Coran recalls that Altea had a similar happenstance in the phoeb of Wilum, during which he once spoke to the ghost of his Pop Pop Wimbleton and briefly reunited with his old pet, Fluffy Stardancer Wimbleton Smythe.

Allura and Lotor take the holiday very seriously and decide they should dress up in accordance with Earth tradition to avoid any issues with interdimensional beings or ghosts. Pidge and Hunk assist in developing costumes for them.

Given the lack of time and ease of translation, the paladins help Allura and Lotor dress up as elves. Both of them are confused as to why this is a fitting costume until Allura remembers that Earth doesn’t have people with pointed ears and magic except for in their myths and legends.

Someone is getting a costume made in part out of drapes, and Coran is happy to help sew costumes in accordance with the paladins’ understanding of medieval dress.

Pidge thinks Lotor could pass as a dark elf/drow from D&D.

Allura gets a set of fake fangs and giggles, flitting about because she thinks she looks so tough with fangs, but really she just looks baby.

Lotura and the paladins have a Halloween movie marathon while they get ready, and Lotor discovers that romance is still his preferred entertainment genre. He does find murder mysteries interesting, though, and attempts to guess whodunit before the movie ends.

Allura is still too delighted by her costume and fake fangs to pay attention to a movie.

Upon landing on Earth, no one initially suspects Lotor and Allura are actually aliens. Lotor and Allura are perceived as having dressed up as the Faerie King and Queen, and they are both very delighted by this game of pretending to be humans pretending to be inhumans.

Both Lotor and Allura love the candlelight and bonfires associated with Halloween, and they walk together across the town festival hosted by the Galaxy Garrison, simply enjoying the ambiance.

Lotor enjoys pumpkin carving more than Allura does because carving gives him a chance to produce life-like renderings. Meanwhile, Allura isn’t impressed with how squishy and wet pumpkins are on the inside. She squeals if she has to touch the inside of a pumpkin to help carve one, but she finds the perfect little purple candle to place in Lotor's carved pumpkin.

The Lotura pumpkin is a carving of Lotor's cat, Kova. Lotor places it very proudly on the ledge along with the other pumpkin carvings from the paladins and cadets.

Lotor’s favorite Halloween treat is caramel popcorn because of the yummy, sugary/salty crunch. Meanwhile, Allura discovers a deep enjoyment for chocolate and mint candies.

While the younger paladins go trick or treating with other cadets at Galaxy Garrison, Lotor and Allura people-watch and roam about. They still end up with bags of candy from Garrison Officers for having “such great costumes" and winning the pumpkin carving competition, and they trade and barter with each other for their favorite candies quite seriously.

Lotor buys a commemorative spoopy sculpture made by a mysterious artist named AJ LoCascio.

Lotor and Allura both coo over sparkly Halloween lights but accidentally knock over and then eviscerate a prop skeleton for scaring them.

Lotor dares to lightly tease Allura over their costumes as the Faerie King and Queen, and Allura blushes over the implications. With enough warm cider in her, she might tease him right back.

It is cold on Halloween, and Allura snuggles closer to Lotor for warmth. Lotor shares his cloak with her.

Lotor and Allura have difficulty removing their costumes for the evening because they enjoy the pretend life they have through their costumes. That for once, they have no major responsibility to attend to besides pretending to be humans in disguise.

Both of them end up with delightful Halloween pajamas with which to commemorate the holiday.

because the idea that he looks fully human and only has galran features when he's going crazy?? wack.

his teeth are fucked up

like fuuucked up. you know how some people have like, a third set of teeth or extra teeth that grow in?? he has that above his canines on both jaws but they kinda decided “lol fuck it” and stopped growing

he’s also got smaller canines that replace the teeth right next to his actual canines, which are pretty long and sharp. like. vampire sharp

they are permanently sharp bc teeth dont magically turn into fangs when desperate LAUREN.

half my draw to voltron and its world has LITERALLY no connection to canon events or plot points but world building in the background. the way that the show presents it seems just so…flat in comparison.

you’re telling me pidge “fuck the government i’m gonna collect evidence” gunderson doesn’t hoard every single scrap of data she can on offline hard drives and carry them w her every chance she gets? (and thus bringing hundreds of terrabytes of data to space w them?)

that the humans wouldn’t get fed up of trying to learn altean writing and just slap handy english labels everywhere they can. the kitchen where they label things like “good food goo” “food goo that tastes of cheese (good)” “goo that tastes of cheese (bad)”. hell even the controls in the pods etc.

the fact that we’re meant to assume that when they’re not freeing planets they’re - what? just chilling out until they get the next distress call? that they’re not at the least bit methodical in their war against an empire??

(do not even talk to me about how voltron was meant to have dismantled the whole empire in the span of a year. a ten thousand year old empire who conquered the whole known galaxy and had almost zero real resistance. a year. yeah.)

what about the things that we’re supposed to think “oh they’re like humans but slightly different culturally wise”. what temperatures do the various species need to be in? humans can live in 10 - 35 degrees celsius (w 23ish being optimal) but what’s the range for alteans? galrans? because it’d be a weird coincidence if these numbers were all the same. and speaking of numbers being the same, what about life span?

because if you look at humans and compare us to other mammals you’ll find varying amounts. the shortest lived mammal is 6 months, the longest is 200 years. the idea that these life spans all are the same throughout the entire galaxy is baffling. not to even go INTO the sizes. every species is coincidentally the same general size as humans. no…? i vehemently disagree with that idea, give me more diversity!!!! yes you can make aliens appear to be different species but if you don’t develop their squishy insides and details my suspension of disbelief is not gonna be sticking around v long.

thinking about how damn difficult it would be for the alteans and humans to coexist on the same ship when irl that’s difficult w other humans bc of how different we’re raised. even when making an effort there’s gonna be times their preferences/needs conflict. dietary needs, atmospheric needs, thermal, sleep, mental, emotional. all of these things you cannot look me in the eye and tell me that two ENTIRELY different species of life would have developed in the exact same way that these align almost perfectly.
