Retro Recipe 3

This week’s Retro Recipe is brought to us by the “Harmsworth Community Cookbook.” This specific recipe was created by Mrs. J. S. Paul.

Cake Steps

Place 1 Cup of Brown Sugar over a fire (Follow proper fire safety protocols).

Stir until it smokes, then remove from the fire.

Add ½ Cup of Boiling Water and Stir until it dissolves (This should have syrup consistency).

In a Separate Bowl, Cream ½ Cup of Butter and gradually add 1 ½ Cups of White Sugar, 1 Cup of Cold Water, Yolks of 2 Eggs, 2 Cups of Flour, and Beat for 5 Minutes.

Add 3 Teaspoons of the Syrup, 2 Teaspoons of Baking Powder, ½ Cup of Flour, Whites of 2 Eggs, and Vanilla, and beat them all together. 

Icing Steps

1 Heaping Dessert Spoon of Butter, 1 Cup of Milk, and Icing Sugar and mix till paste forms.

Add enough Syrup to give it a burnt flavour.

"One of the most significant archaeological digs in Manitoba's history is exposing a key element of Indigenous history, but the group heading the project says it's also scraping to stay afloat due to chronic under funding by the province.

The Manitoba Archaeological Society has been forced in recent years to cut its only paid staff member and abandon its office. Everything is now stored in the vacant office of a three-bay car wash in the small southwestern Manitoba town of Virden.

"My car wash has a wonderful curated collection of Aboriginal artifacts, but they should be in museums," said Alicia Gooden, the society's president and owner of the car wash.

"They should be displayed properly and stored properly," she said. "Same with our records — I've got 60-year-old amazing records just sitting in boxes."

Gooden's is not an isolated story, said Gordon Goldsborough, head researcher and past-president of the Manitoba Historical Society.

Retro Recipe

Hi Everyone! Here is this week’s eggcellent Retro Recipe! It comes from the 1924 edition of the Harmsworth Community Cook Book. Profits from this cookbook went to the Virden Hospital. The recipe comes to us from Mrs. Gellie and is called Refreshing Egg Drink. 

Ingredients:

1 Egg

1 Tea Cupful of Milk 

(This term was a British measurement and is believed to have started with apothecaries, who were those tasked with making medicine, in 1824. The conversion for a Tea Cupful is around three fluid ounces (is close to ⅓ cup). 

1 Teaspoon of Sugar

Steps:

Boil the Milk

Beat the Egg and Sugar 

Pour the Boiling Milk with the Egg and Sugar

Flavour as desired (Not mentioned what to use)

"...there's no way you're serious." Vox huffed, dropping the paper on the wooden desk between them, glaring at the avian sat across from him.

Virden only smiled calmly, resting his chin in his hands as he spoke, "I promise I am. No strings attached. Well, except for the necessary ones.."

"Funny." Vox deadpans, before glancing back down at the contract in front of him. The pen sits untouched beside it, simply waiting to be used.

"...you give me power.. and fame, and money, and influence.. just for a puppet?" Vox questions, suspicion bleeding into disbelief as he looked back up to Virden, only finding the same calm smile on his face.

"Mhm. A puppet. You signing that contract means that you let me carve your likeness into a wooden puppet and place your soul inside it for my collection. Simple."

Vox found himself baffled. This was too good to be true.. all the power he could want, all the fame and money he could ever need, all at the cost of his soul and likeness? I mean really, the joke was on bird brain.. Vox was sure he had lost whatever soul was left bacm on earth. He wasnt exactly the type of man to keep his spiritual health in mind. So really.. this deal was downright free!

"..there has to be a catch.." he had seen enough of hell, known enough people like himself to feel when something was off. And this? It felt off.

"I guarantee there isn't one." Virden smiled that same smile, sitting up and crossing his legs in front of him. "I haven't lied to you. I've been nothing but truthful. I promise." He seemed detached, almost.. smug.

Vox found himself picking up the contract again, reading everything over, looking over every bit of fine print he could find. He could only see the same words Virden had spoken.. couldn't find a single loophole in writing.

"...why me?" He finally asks, glancing up at Virden with narrowed eyes. "Why do you want me?"

Virden's smile changed into something different. Predatory? Condescending? Intrigued? Vox wasn't sure. It was hard to read him when his eyes were nothing but a stark yellow color.

"I find you.. interesting. I've never seen any other sinner with your.." Vox watches his face as he smiles wider, "..attributes. I figured I could use this contract to get us *both* what we want."

"And how exactly do you know what I want? What makes you think I want what you're offering me?"

"Oh please, I can see it. You look ambitious.. you look like a man who isn't afraid to take risks to get himself up the ladder." Virden paused, pushing the pen towards Vox as he continued to speak, "You look like a man who knows what the right decision is.."

Vox didn't see the way Virden's expression turned sinister. He didn't see the glint in his eye. He didn't see the way Virden looked at him, like a mouse caught in his trap. He was too busy staring at the pen, running Virden's words through his head. Ambitious.. risk taker.. the right decision.

...who cares about a stupid puppet.. who cares about a worthless soul. He wants power, money, fame.. and this contract can get him there. He could be the most powerful overlord in hell.. maybe even more powerful than Lucifer himself.. all he has to do..

The pen is on paper faster than either of them can blink. A full name written in practiced cursive on a dotted line. As soon as the pen lifts, the contract is gone, and Virden stares at him from across the desk.

Vox makes eye contact with Virden, he sees the smile on his face, smug and sinister. An expression he knew well enough, an expression he himself wore when... when...

Fuck.
