#very performative ''activism'' when he continuously screw over his son

Manuela/Rodrigue 45. feeling their temperature - can be either canon or eh-u (eyes emoji)
jashdgjfdhg this was very Fun and a little Painful and got kind of Long so I’m just going to link to it on AO3!
here’s a preview:
Most of the activity seemed to be in the dining room, where crafting could take place on a flat surface and jewellery, knitting, and even paintings could be displayed.  Felix's quiet friend, Bernadetta, was even sketching from a photograph of somebody's pet.   Glad that things seemed to be going well, Rodrigue slunk to the kitchen for his tea. It was occupied, by a woman just a few years younger than himself, with carefully done hair and a beauty spot beneath her eye.  At the moment, she was screwing a bottle-opener into the cork of a Beaujolais.   "Allow me," Rodrigue said, politeness taking over.  He set his cup on the counter and offered to take the bottle from the woman. "Why thank you!  Such a gentleman," the woman purred, as he continued the job she had begun. With a small pop, Rodrigue loosened the cork and lifted it from the neck of the bottle.  The woman held up her glass and he poured to the point at which the glass began to taper--about halfway full. "Oh, I'll tell you when to stop, Honey," the woman said.  "Keep it coming." Rodrigue felt himself flush and resumed pouring, until the glass was completely full and extremely unbalanced on its narrow stem. "Thank you," she said.  "What a gracious host." "You're quite welcome," Rodrigue answered.  "I do hope that you're comfortable here?  Felix's friends haven't driven you into the kitchen?" "No, not at all, and isn't it sweet of you to be so concerned for little old me!" Rodrigue wondered how many very full glasses of wine this woman had already consumed. "So that Felix boy is your son," she mused, looking a little disappointed.  That was strange.  "I take it you're married?" "Ah," Rodrigue said, instinctively fiddling with his wedding band, looking down.  "Not for some time, I'm afraid." "Oh, I'm sorry." "Thank you." There was a beat of silence, then Rodrigue realized he had yet to introduce himself.  Apologizing, he did so, offering his hand. "Manuela," the woman answered, sliding her hand into his, "Casagranda." That sounded familiar.  "Casagranda?  I know I've heard that name before." "Oh perhaps you've heard me singing," Manuela said, not moving her hand, smiling suggestively. Suddenly, Rodrigue knew where she was from.  His jaw dropped.  "You're not Manuela Casagranda the opera singer!  I saw you perform as Rosina at l'Opéra de Montréal!"   "Oh, that was years ago," Manuela said, and Rodrigue felt like he was in some kind of fever dream because how else had a famous beautiful opera star ended up in his kitchen? "No, it can't have been so long--you haven't changed at all," Rodrigue said. Manuela laughed, loud and with heart.  "Oh, what a smooth-talker!  I like you." "Ah, thank you," Rodrigue said, quite conscious of the fact that she had not yet released his hand.  "I--how--which of--" "Hm?  Oh, what am I doing here?  That's fair, I suppose," Manuela said, finally letting go of his hand.  Instead of feeling cold, Rodrigue was left keenly aware of how warm the kitchen had gotten.  Manuela brushed some hair behind her ear--giving him a very fascinating view of her very elegant neck and the way her halter-style dress was held up--and explained that one of Ingrid's friends, one Dorothea Arnault, was to her a protégée of sorts. "I see," Rodrigue said, and cleared his throat.  "Well.  Though I don't have any involvement with this, party, I suppose?  I hope that you have an enjoyable time.  If you need anything, do let me know." Manuela had a careful sip of her wine, and shot him a sideways glance.  "Anything?" Spluttering, Rodrigue tried to form a single coherent sentence.  He failed.  "That is--I meant within--ah, I wouldn't--"

Spanish Princess Episode 5: many many thoughts
Strap yo selves in
-WHERE WAS THE APOLOGY?? Lina’s just back with Catherine like nothing happened??
-Katherine, I get why you’re upset, but you kind of should be unsurprised?? Your dad was unfaithful to his wife, most kings were. Henry VII and Richard III were the exceptions, and even they had illegitimate sons before their marriages. Many kings also had official mistresses that everyone knew about, so by the standards of the time Henry and Bessie are actually being pretty tactful in at least trying to keep their affair out of sight. (Sexy dancing aside).
-Honestly it would have been so much more moving if KoA was like “I know kings take mistresses...but I thought...I was so sure... he would be different...”
-”they gave me a purse of gold!” It’s expected that you give the monarch lavish presents, lmao Ursula and Stafford would do that even if they hated each other and you
-”everybody loves a masque” the only sensible thing Henry has said so far in this show. Also court probably had way more masques than we see in the show, and it would standard to have a masque every holiday.
-”she is not a boy” hurry up with your character development and learn to love Mary already i am so TIRED of this miserable BS
-seems a rather depopulated masque? If the Chateau Vert pageant is anything to go by putting on a masque was a court activity, with most of the ladies performing.
-Bessie Blount in her cute masque costume... sweet mother i cannot weave Aphrodite has overcome me with GAAAAAAAAAAAAY
-”I never enjoyed carousing...my mother scolded me” look i love the Neville sisters with my whole heart but a) Margaret was 3 at most when her mother died, how does she remember her? She’d have clearer memories of her double-uncle and double-aunt, Richard III and Queen Anne b) Isabel Neville in the White Queen was established as very prim and proper, a well-bred girl who cared about enforcing decorum, she refused to ‘carouse’ and she certainly would never bring a 3 year old to a party c) we saw little Margaret as a girl at the end of the White Queen and she didn’t seem at all shy.
-”she died young, didn’t she” ...yes? most people did?
-”they both did” understatement of the year. Isabel Neville died young because she was ill, George died young (in the universe of The White Queen, at least) BECAUSE HE WAS FORCEFULLY DROWNED IN A VAT OF MALMSEY WINE. THESE TWO THINGS ARE NOT THE SAME! I do at least trust the writers of this show that the understatement was intentional, I’m sure even Emma Frost couldn’t forget a major character getting violently drowned.
-So the court only noticed the plague when one of their own got it so obviously and then died? Yes, plague could move fast, but if there was a whiff of plague the court would flee with the speed of the Looney Tunes road runner. If an acquaintance of an acquaintance of a cook had a cousin who saw someone with the plague, the court would flee to the country. How have these people not died of terminal stupid?! Like Compton was in the same building as the heir to the throne
-To be fair, it makes sense that they’re surprised Compton’s dead. Because the real Compton died of the sweating sickness. In 1528. Also he was involved in Buckingham’s downfall so... you just wrote yourself into a corner.
-Oh wow an actual good reason for More and Pole to be quarantined together i am amaaaaaazed
-”attend the queen” Boleyn, what do you think your daughter’s been doing all season if not attending the queen? Playing tetris?
-Katherine helping Anne into the wagon...I actually like that little moment. Like it does make sense, because the two have no reason to hate each other yet. (And who couldn’t like Anne? She’s such a babby!)
-Thomas More in the Tudor equivalent of casual clothes... much better. Shame about the 1930s lady’s wig.
-”what else should we do?” Maggie, this cannot be the first epidemic you’ve ever lived through. Have you forgotten the sweating sickness of 1485? You’ve probably lived through more epidemics than Oviedo has, you should know the protocol better than him.
-Oviedo continues to be the only man with rights. I wish we could see him crying and missing his wife and babies, but then my lil heart would break so maybe it’s for the best.
-They burn Maggie’s weird blue hood AS THEY SHOULD! IT WAS UGLY AND STUPID! I NEVER HAVE TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN NOW! THANK YOU SO MUCH! yes they also burned her nice dress with the strawberries on it but honestly it’s worth it, bc now i can rest easy, knowing the evil hood has been defeated.
-”you were a plaything” Katherine is so obviously insecure. I’m getting second-hand embarrassment. Like if she really was certain Bessie wasn’t important, she wouldn’t need to say it, would she? Except to rub it in. Which this KOA would absolutely do.
-literally all Bessie said was good morning?? Like Bessie is doing her best?? The masque was Henry’s idea, not hers, she hasn’t shown off about her affair, she hasn’t demanded money or titles, she hasn’t demanded any status to rival Katherine’s, she doesn’t flirt with or even speak to Henry when Katherine’s around, she acts like they’re strangers, she doesn’t even react when Katherine loses her temper...someone please please stick up for Bessie!
-”the rocking of the cart is unsettling to the stomach” is Anne naive, or is she covering for Bessie? I hope it’s the latter, in which case Anne is the one person looking out for Bessie...the babby is Soft, I repeat the babby is Soft!
-the irony of Mary being cold to Bessie when she’s next in the firing line...
-”it is not the rocking” Thank you Lina, where would we be without your gift for stating the obvious?
-”where did Wolsey get his money”...He’s a churchman...at the top of the church hierarchy...how do you fuckin think he got wealthy. Have y’all not been in the sixteenth century for five minutes? Why do you think Luther is so mad at the church?
-”I know of no other man in her bed most nights” Honestly wow I’m surprised KoA wasn’t like “well :/ a girl like that :/ who knows how many men process in and out of her bed :/” KoA gets half a point for being less bitchy than usual. Also Bessie looked so uncomfortable with Henry groping her stomach in front of Katherine. I pray the next man in her life treats her right and that Fraham don’t prematurely kill her off like they did with Compton.
-”the future king” if you’re regent on his behalf, then he’s already king! “Civilised companionship” back at it again with the Scots-are-barbarians.
-Laura Carmichael is utterly stunning this episode, with her hair down. The cinematography was beautiful in general this week.
-”freedom to speak and licence to speak are two different things” hey look at that one of Thomas More’s actual beliefs. I am giving all the credit to the historical advisor for that, I don’t believe for one second Fraham knew that beforehand.
-Maggie I love you but no, God does not sanction adultery. For any reason.
-KOA smirking and gloating about Bessie’s pain...she has never been so punchable. I would understand, if not condone it, if Bessie was manipulative, or greedy, or ambitious, or trying to supplant Katherine. But Bessie’s been betrayed by Henry too, and there’s no concrete evidence she ever gloated about her affair, to anyone let alone Katherine.
-”You think only of your own fate while London is struck down with plague” Earth to Katherine?? What concern have you shown for the Londoners?? Also calling Bessie selfish...Bessie’s not the one who lashed out at Lina, was jealous at Lina for having twin boys, and who wanted to continue a war for personal reasons. And then Bessie proves KoA wrong 5 hot seconds later by sticking up for Mary. Bit rich of KoA to be all “how dare you leave my daughter unattended” when she herself won’t even hold Mary.
-”Louis didn’t last a year” What! Is! The Timeline!
-Meg in that cloak reminds me of the Scottish Widow adverts. Georgie is so greedy- she steals every single scene she is in! Even when she’s raging she has more dignity and more presence than KoA ever has.
-”YOU LYING SOD” i burst out laughing it’s really not the little two-timing shit’s day, is it?
-Mary receiving Charlie B in the most Extra way possible. A++
-Why does Wolsey look like he’s about to cry?
-”thoughts are not actions” Lina I love you but... that is NOT what the New Testament says. Jesus said evil thoughts are very very much sins. I’ll give you a pass because maybe you haven’t been Catholic as long as Katherine has? Idk your backstory.
-Aaand now she’s wishing death on Bessie and her unborn baby and Lina isn’t disgusted? At least Katherine is feeling guilty. AS SHE SHOULD.
-”must it always fall to me to be magnanimous?” Katherine, you think only of yourself, for 23 out of every 24 hours.
-”God wants me to be compassionate to Bessie because of my sins” God wants you to be compassionate because that’s how Christianity is supposed to work. It’s not very selfless of you to decide to be selfless so that you can get what you want.
-oh wow look at that! She’s getting some self-awareness, i never saw that coming.
-”you betrayed Bessie” 5 points to Katherine of Aragon for standing up for Bessie when Henry screwed her over. Finally, some positive character development.
- MINUS 20000 POINTS FOR BABY STEALING
-WHAT THE FUCK
-is henry so dumb he thinks that baby is Katherine’s? Katherine was so obviously not pregnant
-When a baby’s born his skin needs to touch his mother’s skin so they can bond. They should have at least an hour’s cuddle time. Katherine of Aragon is literally traumatising a baby the very minute he is born. For her own selfish, selfish desires.

Screwing Up (You Did Not Me) Part 2
I’m at school since I have classes today and am using my laptop so yeah...also a bit sick at the moment but oh well...also people kept asking me to make a sequel to this here
It didn’t take long for the class to be able to tell the difference a bit after Marinette closed the free commissions that they really didn’t know other than those four who bitched to her to do so.
It was Alya who realized things went wrong because two weeks after the sketchbook incident she was just on her phone when she noticed the date and gasped sitting up from her bed.
IT WAS HER AND NINO’S ANNIVERSARY!
Well it was two days after their anniversary and she quickly rushed out of the apartment with Nora yelling after her.
She rushed over to Nino’s place and fidgets a little before pounding on the door not caring that she was possibly bothering Nino’s family. She keeps pounding on the door when an annoyed looking Mrs. Lahiffe opens the door and glares at Alya who stares at her with a look of shock.
“What would you like Alya?” Mrs. Lahiffe said with a raised eyebrow.
“I uh... I need to speak with Nino.”
“You can’t. He just got his wisdom teeth removed and I rather my son rest for now.”
Alya’s lips turned into a smile, “that’s fine-”
Ms. Cesiare puts her hand up, “my son needs to rest Alya. I’m not even letting Chris bother his older brother.
Alya blinks in surprise at her and frowns, “but I’m his girlfriend!”
“Alya I do not care. At all. Let Nino rest. He very much needs it since he got tired out,” she said before slamming the door on her face making Alya jump in surprise before pouting and stomping off to leave.
-----
The next day when Nino returned to school the next day everyone was surprised to see a tired-out Nino who shrugged off Alya who was rambling on that she had wished to see him the day before.
“I may have forgotten that our anniversary was three days ago to be honest, but it doesn’t matter! We can go after school to a really nice pla-”
“I’m sorry Alya, but I have a gig three hours after school so I’m going to be busy,” Nino said sheepishly as he took out a few things before class started.
“Wait what?”
“Alya you’ve started to skip out on dates and I’m tired being left alone waiting for you when you actually are chasing after Akuma battles,” Nino said rubbing his neck.
“What are you saying?” Alya said glaring at her boyfriend. So, what if she forgot a few of their dates? She was busy and… she forgot that she had Marinette basically write down when her dates were so she wouldn’t forget.
By destroying Marinette’s sketchbook, she had ripped up the useless schedule Marinette made for Alya’s dates and such from everyone else that didn’t have their own schedule or planner.
Nino was going to reply but was interrupted by the bell ringing and went to sit on his seat.
-----
Ten minutes later the whole class were shocked, sans Marinette and her friends, as they were told that they were having a quiz. A math one at that.
A few of them panicked because most of them forgot about the dumb quiz that Ms. Bustier informed them about two weeks ago.
Alya and a few others did bad and they could tell since a few didn't even finish the quiz when the timer Ms. Bustier put up rang out.
Alya felt dread in her stomach since she had basically half the page barely done from the 30 minutes Ms. Bustier gave the class to complete the quiz. A few of the other students felt that dread as well but only a few which were from the one that didn’t at all study, or they did but were still worried about the quiz to really focus.
Max had a great score but sighs knowing well that Marinette got a better score, she always did study better.
That and she had been able to skip a grade or two when they were younger, making her the youngest in the class. Something that only Chloe was surprisingly the only one allowed to tease her about really.
It took almost a few more weeks for the rest of the class to realize they were in much more trouble thanks to the four who ruined Marinette’s class sketchbook.
No more free time for the classmates who didn’t bother to make a planner since they pretty much had no clue on how to make one. Like at all, since they always relied on Marinette to help them out with that part of their lives other than random requests that would make Marinette stress over them a little.
Kim got dates for competitions wrong and went to the wrong one or came at the wrong time that it eventually caused him to be kicked out of sports. It also had to do that his grades were dropping very dramatically. Same with Alix who had to spend more time studying and ended up kicked out of sports.
A few of the others in class eventually had a bit of difficulty because they had extra-curricular activities and those outside of school that it got in the way of them studying that they had to either drop them or juggle them as best as they could which caused many to be stressed out almost daily if not paranoid for anything that could go wrong with what they had planned really.
Alya eventually got grounded because the few akuma battles that were happening took up too much of her homework time and her school performance was bad that her parents had to ground her. Eventually Nino talked to her in private that he wanted to break up.
Except, with all the stress that Alya was in from school, homework, etc. she ended up almost screaming at him in the courtyard in front of everyone that it caused her to cry and beg to Nino that they can work it out. However, Nino calmed her down and told her that he was too stressed out for their relationship to continue really. Well he tried to but Alya was having such a bad breakdown that Ladybug had to come and snatch the akuma out of the air as it almost reached her.
There were a few other friendships and relationships that became strained because of all the stress the class were in almost daily.
A few in class blamed themselves really while others knew that thanks to Alya and the other three for destroying said sketchbook they were in this mess thanks to the four classmates. Although, they now did realize how messy their schedules were.
As for Marinette and her three other friends?
Well they were very more relaxed thanks to Marinette clear schedule and the four helping each other out. They didn’t have to bother with the bothersome class anymore.

Read through light novel vol. 15. Random thoughts.
Tumblr media
Well, I just found one of my favorite volumes of this series. For all the right and wrong reasons.
There is a certain trope or term I've heard of for comedy. Where a joke or skit can be really funny but can also go a little too far with the performance to where it can be a little annoying. But there are also plenty of times where the joke/skit takes it even FURTHER than that and it circles back around to being funny again. Naofumi with Raph-chan is a little like that. His love for the little furball was cute and funny at first, then it became a little odd and maybe a little cringey, and now it's gone to such an extreme that it's circled back to funny again, with the Shield hero now commanding a legion of Raph-chans. Also, Naofumi and Ruft bonding over Raph-chan is genuinely really sweet. Between that, how much he clings to Naofumi (or Raph-chan) when he's scared, and just the liking he's taken to the kid, I think Naofumi has definitely found his son figure. Honestly their relationship feels a little more parent and child than even Naofumi and child Raphtalia's was and it took me a bit before I figured out why that was, at least for me.
Naofumi was very parental to Raphtalia and does still somewhat think of her as his daughter. However, when they first met it was also a situation where Raphtalia had to grow up very quickly, and not just physically through leveling. She was bought as a slave and didn't want to go back to the trader. She wanted to fight back against the things that took her family and village from her. She wanted to be Naofumi's sword. She was the sole reason he could gain any significant experience and level up into the Shield Hero he needed to be. The romantic feelings she gained for him were almost certainly a factor but overall, for her sake and his, staying a child, staying as someone's daughter, was not an option. What Naofumi needed wasn't a daughter but a partner. Someone he could lean on and trust.
With Ruft, there is no need for him to grow up quite yet. Yes, Naofumi took him to the village so he could get some experience with the real world and he does plan on toughening him up, but Naofumi is not dependent on Ruft like he was Raphtalia. There's no pressure for Ruft to grow up because Naofumi and everyone else will be fine regardless, so he has more freedom to be a kid. And unlike Filo and the village kids, he doesn't have the added complication of also being Naofumi's slave. Naofumi can treat him and care for him like a kid.
Side note, but is it weird that, even though I know he's related to Raphtalia, before I finally was given an image of him I kept on imagining Ruft looking like Gohan from the very beginning of Dragon Ball Z? Chinese Emperor clothes and all. It feels a little unintentionally racist of me given that Q'ten Lo is meant to resemble isolationist period Japan.
“The Bow Hero mentioned that he has a skill which allows him to scout out the surrounding area from a higher vantage point,” Raphtalia recalled. Itsuki said that? I mean, he was the Bow Hero. It wouldn’t be strange for him to have a skill that allowed him to search for distant targets. That sounded like quite a convenient skill too.
I'm glad about this little detail. I was just saying in the last volume that it felt like the other three heroes didn't seem to have any abilities that weren't directly attack-based. And then later with the hero conference we get even more added to their arsenals beyond just "attack, big attack, and bigger attack" like they'd been showing up until now. Before it felt like the other three could be a bit interchangeable in battle with Naofumi, as it's three attackers and one defender, with range being the only difference. But now, between the four of them, it's a good mix of attack, defense, support, healing, and debuffs. The Four Holy Heroes actually work as a party together.
“R-Raphtalia. Brother. I just want to go and see Master Naofumi! Move aside,” Atla stated.
“No,” Raphtalia replied.
“Never,” replied her brother.
“Raph!” barked a horde of Raphs.
I can hear the freaking echo! I'm dying!
“To be more accurate, they are filolials who act like mountain bandits, attacking wagons carrying off goods and stuff like that,” Melty continued.
...
“Hold on a moment. What the hell is going on then? And—” I finished my thought in my head. If this was the issue that Fitoria wanted help with, then . . . “You’re telling me filolials fight over wagons?”
“Yes. That’s what I’ve been told,” Melty confirmed. Uwah! So she wanted me to resolve some kind of turf war? If these were wild filolials, they weren’t going to go down without a fight.
“The loser has to give their wagon to the winner,” Melty explained. “Also, if it’s the season of love, they can only find love by defeating their opponent.” What were they, hermit crabs?
This is going exactly where I think it's going, isn't it?
[Two chapters later]
“It’s been a while, father-in-law. It’s me, I say, Motoyasu the street racer!”
F******************************************K!
I get Motoyasu is under the effect of his curse series but...it's just so hard to like this guy. It was even before Witch betrayed him and his curse activated. Especially when he uses his Temptation ability to "show Filo his love", basically trying to force her into loving him. Thank goodness it didn't work and that Raph-chan can clear away the effects it did have. Naofumi could stand to be more considerate of Raphtalia when it comes to the Raphs but Motoyasu has been straight up harassing Filo. He tried to keep her trapped in her "angel" form when rescuing her from Naofumi's "brainwashing" and probably was going to keep her that way forever if Witch didn't have her "accidentally" killed along with Melty when removing the brainwashing. I'm pretty sure she was the main person he wanted to peep on in the baths at Cal Mira. He stole her favorite wagon and transformed it into...that. And then there's the shape of...
No...
No!
I'd heard a rumor but...
NO!
I thought it was a web novel thing!
WHY DOES MOTOYASU HAVE A DILDO SPEAR?!?!
Or...god, what if it's not a dildo?!
“I’m taking your daughter. Using my Lust Envy Spear IV,” Motoyasu exclaimed. God. This was all depressing me intently.
“Filo-tan! I will stop you and take your purity!” Motoyasu thrust his spear at Filo.
“Boo!” She wasn’t interested. Then I noticed what he was pointing at. Below the waist, shall we say.
....................Kill him. Kill him. F**king kill him. I don't care about the consequences to the world. Kill him. Kill him now. Have Aura and Mare come over from Overlord and Iris come over from Konosuba. They'll all team up with Filo so that the lolis he loves so much can snap his f**king neck.
I get he's under the effects of a curse (two curses even; lust and envy) but he's almost everything he and Witch accused Naofumi of being. He's brainwashing people and an attempted rapist. All he's missing is abusing his slaves and kidnapping Melty.
...F**k. Okay, back to reality.
So Quirks exist in Itsuki's universe? Last volume I made a comparison between Motoyasu #2 and Bakugo from My Hero Academia because they fit similar tropes for me, but in terms of actual backstory and character, Itsuki is definitely the better comparison. Thought he was special in elementary school because of his powers but got slapped with a bit of reality upon entering the special school for powers. For both of them, this fed into an inferiority complex. It does also add more to Itsuki's hero complex. Bakugo's Quirk and natural talents had him overpraised from youth, leading him to fear the failure of living up to expectations of him. For Itsuki, it goes a little the other way, where his expectations for himself were high, got shattered because the powers above his level were much greater and thus nothing was expected to become of him in comparison, and so he fell into console games where he could be important and the main character for once.
None of this forgives how he treated Rishia but I'd still rather have this understanding and explanation of his character than not. He and Trash have a slightly similar problem for me, and it's not the story's fault. Itsuki's curse has left him pretty fried and emotionless, though it's slowly coming back to him. He hasn't really had a chance to redeem himself. He's working to better himself, yes, but he's also in a state where he'll do everything he's told. He had a nice, split-second apology to Rishia he managed to get out but that's about it. Similarly with Trash, he and Itsuki have sympathetic backstories but he is so lost in his hatred the Shield Hero, Siltvelt, and a few other things that he has not taken responsibility or shown remorse for any of the things that had happened because of him, including his youngest daughter nearly being killed multiple times. Before he was half-crazy and now after meeting Alta and Fohl he just seems withered away and beaten. Trash and Itsuki's situations are sympathetic but they've yet to do anything that puts me on their side beyond basic human empathy and pity.
Compare that to Ren, whom I'm glad I quite like now. He never did anything as bad as Trash or Itsuki, nor does he have as tragic a backstory as either (that's been told to us yet anyway), but he still felt remorse for the bad things he did do and has actively worked to try and make up for them or make certain they don't happen again, because he knows he screwed up. I'm not just supposed to pity him. Like with Naofumi, I'm supposed to see him rise and he does, at several points in this volume being very helpful to very heroic. And I like how he and Naofumi contrast with each other without completely butting heads like stubborn bulls, like over the bandits for justice. They're both heroes but Ren is working hard to be a real hero to make up for the lack of one he was before, while Naofumi outright sees himself as a bad person, that all his good deeds are for selfish motivations and that he's not deserving of being hailed as a hero to begin with.
Well, I think that was all I was going to talk about. Yes sir.
...
.......
.................
.....................
..............................Alta on the cover. Alta on the inner art and quote page. Most of this book being about Fohl's fear over Alta's safety. There were so many red flags you'd think the Phoenix's explosion broke the fourth wall and set fire to the pages themselves.
Yeah, this death was better than Ost's. Ost's death still worked despite her short time with Naofumi's party because there was still emotion during that time and she still is often referenced, remembered, and mourned for even in volumes well after her death, so it feels less cheap and manipulative and more like it actually meant something. With Alta though, it's not just better just because we knew her longer (though that's certainly a factor) but because of the effect on the main characters, especially Naofumi. The raw pain, the denial, the begging, the self-blame, the sheer seething anger, the emptiness. Even the way it's written when she first jumps in the way and after the attack finally ends, it feels like the aftermath of a grenade. Everything is blurred and shaky, everything is silenced except for the ringing in his ears and its not entirely clear what's going on, only that something bad just happened. Naofumi runs through every emotion you'd want from someone like him and it has an even more personal meaning than that. Alta sacrificing herself for him gave Naofumi a bit of a hard slap in the face as to what everyone he cares about would feel if he sacrificed himself for them, which he's tried doing a few time already. It was a very good send-off for Alta.
This was also both the best and worst time for Naofumi to finally be told outright that Raphtalia loves him. Looking forward to either loving or being very frustrated with where this goes. Though regardless, that final art of them just hugging and crying it out is going to hold a special place in my heart.
Trash was apparently the Seven Star Staff Hero. I’d never seen him holding the staff and honestly wondered if the original king was dead and this was just a doppelganger.
Just where was he hiding the Seven Star Staff?
After the dildo spear, please don't ask me to imagine where Trash hides his staff.

The Dancing Warrior: Water, Chapter 11
(Sokka x OC Reader)
A/N: I’m so sorry but this is a REALLY long chapter, possibly the longest I’ve written so far...but oh well. If anyone knows how to edit a post so it has the “keep reading” link PLS let me know I’m begging 😭

It had taken them quite a while to finally arrive at the North Pole. There were chunks of ice floating in the water and the air was bitter to Navani. She had been shivering profusely for that past couple of days. She had never been to either of the poles before so she had no reason for owning a thick coat like Katara and Sokka. Katara had given Navani her spare tunic, which was a bit small, but a lot warmer than her own. The only thing she had were her robes, a clear indication that she was Fire Nation. Something they had all agreed to keep secret. Navani vowed to solely bend water for as long at they were there. And she knew she had to keep that promise or else they would all be in jeopardy.
Navani sat at the edge of Appa’s saddle, shivering as she tucked herself as far as she could into her tunic. Her knees were snug to her chest with her arms wrapped tightly around them. How could someone live in the cold like this?
She had been so consumed in her own thoughts that she hadn’t been paying any attention to the conversation going on between everyone else. But then she was brought back when Appa’s smooth sailing suddenly jerked and everyone screamed. He tried to keep his balance but some ice threw him off, causing him to tilt. Everyone one held on with strong grips....well almost everyone. As Appa crash landed in the freezing waters, Navani was thrown over with a scream.
They all gasped as the girl fell into the water, “Navani!”
Her body felt numb as she broke the surface, gasping for air. Her teeth chattered as dozens of boats emerged from behind small glaciers. She moved a fast as she could, which honestly wasn’t all that fast, and hurled her stiff body back onto Appa. They all had rushed to her side, but at the moment were too occupied with Northerners approaching.
===
Everything there was beautiful. There was so much to marvel at. From the beautiful architecture to the people and culture. Navani wished she could’ve enjoyed it more but at the moment she was soaking wet in the freezing cold. Her and Katara had done their best to bend the water out of her cloths and one of the men from the boats had lended her some blankets. Which she was currently tightly wrapped in.
As they rounded a corner, there were people along the sides of the canals and buildings waving down at them. Navani couldn’t help but smile and wave back despite her condition. At least she could enjoy that. Or so she thought.
The warm feeling grew a little as a small canoe drifted passed them, catching both Navani and Sokka’s attention. There on the canoe sat a boy and a girl, side by side, no older then them. Navani watched intently, curious. They were dressed like they were important with their hair decorated with different pieces and jewelry. The girl’s was a stark white while the boy’s was pitch black. They contrasted perfectly. Not to mention they were both extremely good looking.
That definitely didn’t go unnoticed by Sokka. Who sighed and leaned against Navani as a deep blush rose to his cheeks, his eyes glued to the girl as the canoe drifted by.
“Could you make it anymore obvious?” Navani scoffed, removing her support from under him. Laughing as he fell to the ground with a thud.
===
“Tonight, we celebrate the arrival of our brother and sisters from the Southern tribe. And they have brought with them someone very special. Someone who many of us believe disappeared from the world until now, the Avatar!” Chief Arnook declared, from his seat at the middle of the table, “We also celebrate my daughter and son’s 16th birthday. Princess Yue and Prince Hai are now of marrying age!”
Navani nearly spit out her drink, turning to look but catching a view of the back of Sokka’s head instead. She scoffed, leaning back to see.
“Thank you, father.” Both twins bowed, Yue continued, “May the great ocean and moon spirits watch over us during these troubled times.”
The Prince turned and glanced her way, a blush so hot on her cheeks she thought her face would melt off.
“Now, Master Pakku and his students will perform.”
That was all Navani needed to hear to have her undivided attention. With an excited gasp, her head whipped around to look at the raised platform.
She watched with wide eyes as the three man manipulated the giant barrels of water to create giant streams moving in almost every direction. They moved in a manner she had never seen before, very different to her usual style. She was mesmerized. So much so that she hadn’t noticed someone standing next to her.
“Is this seat taken?” Hai asked politely, gesturing to the spot next to her.
With her attention still glued to the performance, she responded, “No, you can sit if you’d like.”
He chuckled, taking a seat, “I can tell you’re enjoying the performance.”
“Huh, oh.” Navani blushed hard, finally drawing her attention away, “Yeah, they’re really good.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re enjoying it.” Hai gave her a warm smile that made butterflies erupt in her gut.
“I, uh- I’m Navani...” She introduced, bowing her head.
“No need, Navani. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” His smile never leaving his face. She giggled, breaking their gaze to save herself from anymore embarrassment. As she did she caught sight of Sokka and the Princess next to her.
“I’m thinking, maybe, we could do any activity together?” Sokka asked, attempting to woo the Princess. Navani couldn’t help it but feel angered by this. She knew exactly what he was doing....
Navani turned back to Hai, “So you’re a Prince?” She tried, hoping it wasn’t such a sucker of an attempt to make conversation.
“Yeah...” He chuckled, “I’m a Prince.”
“And...you have a sister?...Who’s your twin?” She wanted to face palm so badly but she resisted, “You two don’t really look alike.”
“Yue was born first and there was something wrong. So my father called upon the moon spirit for help. And it did, that’s why she has white hair. Hence our names as well. They mean moon and ocean.” He answered with not much enthusiasm. Like Navani had pushed a little too much.
“Oh, I’m assuming she gets all the attention?” She glanced over at his twin.
“Mhm,” He hummed with an eye roll, “She’s older, only by a few minutes so whoever she marries automatically becomes chief. Which isn’t fair. It really should be me because I’m the chief’s first son. Plus I’m a water bender!”
Navani perked, an idea popping into her head, “Me too! I’m not that good, though. I could definitely use some practice...” She batted her eyelashes, resting her elbow on the table and leaning on it. And just like that she was in....or so she thought.
“Well, I’m sure healing isn’t that hard.” He said smugly, waving it off.
Navani faltered a bit, pressing, “Healing? What about real water bending? Like actual fighting moves? Or dancing even?”
Hai gave a hearty chuckle, “Well...I guess I could show you a little something but no one can know, alright?”
Her eyebrows knotted in confusion but she brushed it off, nodding and smiling.
“We could meet sometime tomorrow?” He offered, taking hold of her hand and placing a gentle kiss on her knuckles.
She turned away, blush furious on her cheeks. And for a moment she forgot about why she was doing this.
===
She had been out for a walk that morning when she caught sight of a canoe in the canal ahead. Inside was just the person she was looking for.
“Prince Hai!” She called from the walk way, speeding up a little to catch up to him. Both him and Princess Yue were sitting in the small boat as it drifted down the canal.
Just as Navani cleared the corner, she ran right into someone, sending them both into water below. Both the Prince and Princess giggled at the sight.
“Ahhh, Navani!” Sokka yelped, pulling himself out of the water.
She could care less about what Sokka was yelling at her, as she shook her hair out of her face.
Prince Hai had gotten up from his seat and moved to lean over the edge, “Meet me on the palace steps tonight!” He called out as the boat continued to drift, without missing a beat.
Navani swooned as she bobbed in the water, a light blush gracing her cheeks. Soon after she pulled herself out of the water, coming to face Sokka as he watched much to his amusement. He had noticed the way the Prince looked at Navani, like he was head over heels. He knew that feeling, or knows to be exact. Sure he was flirting with Princess Yue but he couldn’t deny that he did feel a pang in his heart every time he thought of Hai and Navani together. He had her first, well, almost had her. Until he screwed it up for himself big time. Maybe Aunt Wu was right...but no. He just needed a distraction for a little bit then he’d deal with that, right?
Navani felt somewhat guilty as she stood in front of Sokka, soaking wet. Like she shouldn’t have made it known that she was going to visit Prince Hai later tonight.
So instead she grounded herself, placing both her hands on her hips, “Yes?” She questioned Sokka’s trained gaze.
He crossed his arms giving her a suspicious glare, “Nothing.”
She exhaled bluntly, giving a huff from her nose, “I’m going back to the igloo. Feel free not to follow me.” She turned sharply, taking off back the way she came.
“I bet you don’t even remember how to get back.” The water tribe boy laughed, watching as she groaned, stomping away. He followed her, doing exactly the opposite of what she said, just to mess with her. He walked a few paces behind her, throwing words of mockery every time she made a wrong turn or went in the wrong direction. Either way, they had ended up in front of the igloo they were staying in.
“Well, would you look at that?” Sokka amused, “We both got what we wanted. You were able to get home and I was able to annoy the heck out of you while doing so.”
“I suggest you shut up before I physically hurt you.” Navani threatened, not even batting an eye his way as she made her way inside.
He laughed, following suit, “You really think you can hurt me? I bet you can’t even pin me to the ground.”
They walked further into the igloo, stopping at the center. Navani shed her big coat, tossing it to the side before wordlessly getting into a fighting stance. Her gaze set sternly on his as he just stood there.
“Come on, tough guy. Since you think you’ve got what it takes, let’s put it to the test.” She stated, dipping low, kicking low and knocking Sokka’s legs out from under him. He landed hard on the floor, letting out a loud groan.
She stepped so she was over him, leaning to look down with her hands on her hips, “What happened? I thought you said you were a warrior?” She taunted, “Get up, I’ll give you another shot. You get the first strike.”
Sokka starred up at her in complete shock. As to why he was shocked, he didn’t know exactly. Of course she could beat him in a fight any day, he was just messing with her after all, right?
Soon after he stood, both of them taking fighting stances. Navani stood with a relaxed, yet steady posture, ready for anything like she had been trained to do. Sokka on the other hand, could fall over with the slightest nudge.
Sokka gave his all with his first strike, deflating a little when Navani dodged it with ease. Almost like it was nothing. He swung a couple more times, watching her move with ease every step of the way, like she had been doing this for dozens of life times.
Sokka tried and tried. He kicked, punched, grabbed, pulled, and shoved. Still nothing. Navani stood strong, barely even breaking a sweat. She giggled at his exhaustion, shoving his shoulder lightly, watching him lose balance and fall only from that little push.
She strutted over to him, placing her foot on his chest, “I didn’t even have to use my bending on you.” She leaned down, towering over him triumphantly. Watching as a smirk curl onto his lips and an idea pop into his head.
“Who’s the warrior now-“ Suddenly her leg was being pulled out from under her, Sokka being able to roll out from under her and pin her down as she made contact with the floor. He sat square on her stomach, using a hand to pin both of her wrists to the floor.
“What the-“ Navani barked from under him. She struggled under his weight, which was almost surprising because he was a little slimmer compared to her trained build.
“Looks who’s on top now! Literally!” He mocked with a big grin on his face.
She hadn’t realized how close they were until then. It all settled in. His weight on her, the way his breath fanned over her face when he talked, his hand holding down her wrists above her head. The butterflies in her stomach matched the intensity of her beating heart. Not to mention she was almost as red as her shirt. Both of their gazes locked on each other, trained so intensely. All those things she had felt for him before over powered the hurt he had caused her. Maybe she had been a bit too harsh, a little too stubborn?...
It had felt like they had been sitting there forever until Katara came bounding into the room.
“Sokka! You’ll never believe it! Gran-Ahh!” She screamed. Both Sokka and Navani yelling along with her as Navani basically launched Sokka across the room. Kicking him off from on top of her.
Katara turned away with her hands over her eyes, “Oh my gosh! Can’t you guys find somewhere a little more private to do that!” She took off.
“Katara!” Navani called, getting up off the floor to run after her, “It’s not what you think at all! I swear!”
They both ran to the door but gave up on chasing after her. They stopped in the doorway, standing close to each other. When they realized it, neither of them jerked away like they normally would’ve. Navani felt....comfortable with their proximity. Something that shocked her, scared her almost.
“I- uhhhh,” Sokka stuttered, trying to ease the tension, “That was fun wasn’t it?”
Navani playfully rolled her eyes, giggling.
===
Later that day Navani was the first to rush out for her...date? Training? She didn’t even know what to call it, with Prince Hai.
For the last hour or two she had spent her time with Prince Hai as he taught her some water bending moves. She was surprised because she already knew a thing or two but his way was so much different from the way she had been taught by her mother. So she was grateful that she was actually able to learn something.
Now they sitting on the palace steps, just enjoying their time together.
“Thank you for teaching me.” She said, leaning back with her palms against the icy step under her, “I really appreciate it.”
He turned to her smiling, “You’re welcome. Thank you for letting me teach you. It’s not everyday a beautiful girl such as yourself gets to spend time with a prince.” He joked.
“I’m sure there are a ton of other girls who would be jealous of me right now.” Navani chuckled, noticing the space between them decrease slowly. Her laughed died off awkwardly as he got closer.
“Yeah, well it doesn’t matter anyways. There would be no gain in a girl marrying me with my current situation.” He sighed, the atmosphere around them shifting.
“Now don’t say that.” Navani comforted, “Any girl would be lucky to marry you.”
He looked into her eyes and Navani saw how bright they seemed to glow under the moonlight, “You really think so?”
Navani smiled, glancing down at his lips and seeing how close they were, “I know so.” She spoke, attempting to keep their distance.
But much to her dismay, he kissed her. She gasped at the sudden contact, her eyes wide with shock and confusion. She felt confused and just odd. It didn’t feel....right to her. It caught her completely off guard. At this, the Prince pulled away quickly with a worried look on his face.
“Oh spirits! I shouldn’t have done that.” He got up hurriedly, leaving Navani on the steps.
She got up after him, “Wait! Prince Hai!”
He stopped at the top of the steps, Navani catching up to him and taking a gentle hold on his wrist.
“I’m sorry,” She began, look up at him, “I’m sorry if it made it seem like we were anything more than friends. And I didn’t mean to hurt you in anyway. But I just think we aren’t destined to have a relationship in those sorts.”
He gave a sad smile, “I understand....you like someone else instead.”
Navani’s eyebrows knotted in confusion, “What?”
“Sokka, is it? I see the way he looks at you and the way you look at him. I was foolish for even thinking that we could’ve had something.”
Navani stood silently for a moment. Maybe he was right. Maybe she did look at Sokka a little too fondly sometimes. And maybe she still got butterflies in her stomach whenever she thought of him in such a way.
Navani took a step closer to him, “No you’re not, you were just doing what your heart was telling you to do.”
Hai smiled again, taking hold of her shoulders, “Go. Go do what you heart is telling you to do and find him.” And so she did. Of course she didn’t leave without giving her thanks and appreciation.
Navani walked back to the igloo in hopes of finding Sokka before he went off to do his activity with the Princess. She tried walking without being too loud. Or else her foot steps would echo off the ice walls. She trotted down a couple walk ways, crosses some bridges until she finally turned up at the igloo. With every step her heart grew with anticipation. She felt as though she could do anything. She rushed through the doorway, a smile as bright as the moon on her face.
“Where is he?” Navani exclaimed, out of breath.
Katara and Aang jumped, startled at her sudden appearance, “Who? Sokka?” Katara questioned.
Navani nodded eagerly, almost squealing with excitement. She was finally coming to terms with her feelings.
“He’s mentioned something about a bridge and seeing the Prin-“ Katara wasn’t able to finish her sentence before Navani rushed back out with a thanks.
At this point she didn’t care if she was loud and her stomping foot steps could be heard. She figured she start with the bridge where she sent Sokka and heralded flying into the water. She slowed as she approached the corner. Hunched over, she caught her breathe. She couldn’t help but over hear the conversation going on.
“Hi, Princess Yue. I made you something.” Navani over heard Sokka greet the Princess. She peaked her head around the corner, leaning as far up against the ice wall as she could. It hurt a little to see them together like so.
She watched as Sokka held out his hand to show Princess Yue what was supposed to be a fish carving. When did he have time to make that? Maybe he really wasn’t doing this just to mess around with her...
”I’m sorry. I’ve made a mistake.” The Princess cried, turning away, “I shouldn’t have asked you to come here.” She ran off as Navani stepped out from around the corner.
When she did something hard hit her in the head, “Ow!” She whined, rubbing the sore spot in her forehead.
Sokka stormed off without noticing Navani. She cursed herself for not making it known that she was there sooner. However she did make an effort to rush back to the igloo to make it seem like she hadn’t been spying on him this whole time. She ran through the doorway, startling Aang and Katara once again.
She tore her coat off in a hurry, along with her boots, plopping down on the ground next to Katara.
Not even a second later Sokka stomps right in, clearly upset. He kicked his sleeping bag and slumped down over it.
“How’s warrior training?” Navani asks carefully, making sure her pace was steady.
Aang looks at Navani with confusion. Navani gave him a desperate look and the boy quickly caught on, “That bad?” He played off.
Sokka groaned, “It’s Princess Yue! One minute she wants to go out with me and then the next she’s telling me to get lost!”
It saddened Navani to see him in such a sour mood over what had just went down. At that point she tuned out of the conversation and focused on relaxing. She laid down on her sleeping bag, arms behind her head and legs crossed. She hadn’t noticed Katara and Aang had left until a little while later. Leaving Navani and Sokka alone.
===
The events that occurred the night before greatly contrasted what was happening right now.
That morning Katara had challenged Master Pakku to a fight, which she still lost despite her skill. And now she was taking a walk with Prince Hai.
“You really like him don’t you?” The Prince questioned with a sly smile.
“What?” Navani blushed, trying to play it off, “I wouldn’t say really like him but-“
“Just admit and stop making it harder for yourself.” He laughed as they approached a bridge.
There stood the Princess and Sokka engaged in a kiss. Navani froze. Her whole body going numb. Her heart began to ache in her chest, under all the layers of cloths she had on. A lump grew in her throat, getting bigger by the second.
Prince Hai had done a service by leading her away from the scene as she wept. She knew she shouldn’t be crying. Because if Sokka had seen her and Hai kiss yesterday, would he have reacted the same?
Hai brought her close in a snug embrace, “Navani, don’t cry. It’ll be alright. She can’t even be with him. She’s engaged!” He explained, taking her face in his hands.
But her expression stayed the same as more tears fell upon her cheeks. Her breathing was choppy and all she could do was sob. She didn’t know why she was in the first place. It’s not like her and Sokka were...dating...in the first place. But she knew deep down that she wanted him. Yet she couldn’t have him.

Episode 124: Lion 4: Alternate Ending
Tumblr media
“Please tell me my destiny.”
We’ve had Ronaldo as a toxic gatekeeping fan intent on harassing the creator. We’ve had Lars as a disappointed fan whom the creator is desperate to impress. We’ve even had Navy as a false fan who’s only interested in robbing the creator’s spaceship (arguably a rarer breed than the first two). So now it’s time for the obsessive clue-hunter, who parses through the creation so deeply that the original meaning gets lost in the shuffle. And this time, our fan stand-in is Steven.
Lion 4: Alternate Ending is an episode about Steven trying to ruin Lion 3: Straight to Video. All the magic from that first glimpse of Rose Quartz threatens to be extinguished through overanalysis, to the point where his discovery of a new tape is met with dread instead of excitement. For all the Steven Universe fans that get frustrated by Steven not being as invested in the lore as they’d like, well, this is what happens when Steven gets as invested in the lore as you’d like.
To be clear, I don’t think Steven succeeds in ruining Lion 3, especially because the conclusion of Lion 4 manages to enhance its predecessor. I also don’t think it’s a bad thing that he tries: it fits his post-Storm in the Room state to tear through whatever evidence he's got to figure out why he was born, and it’s properly painful to see him so desensitized to the wonder of Rose’s tape that he’s reduced it to a possible decoded message. What better way to express how Steven feels than tainting a pivotal moment with his mother?
Tumblr media
I’m super into stories where a mystery to the characters isn’t a mystery to the viewer: the core example is Cowboy Bebop episode Speak Like a Child, where our 2070s crew is trying to solve the case of a strange antique object that a 1990s audience already knows is a videotape (although a fifth of the way through the twenty-first century, we’re already getting removed from an era where modern audiences would know what a Betamax is, even as a cultural relic). Because the writers don’t have to try to fool us, we can focus more on how the characters tackle a problem instead of trying to beat them to the punch with our own deduction skills. I wouldn’t call Lion 4 the most concrete example of this sort of story, as it’s not impossible that Rose was leaving encrypted messages behind, but to me at least the “twist” that Rose’s tape wasn’t part of some dubious master plan is obvious enough that I can just enjoy the ride.
“Enjoy” is perhaps the wrong word, because while this is an excellent episode, it’s not a fun one. There are comedic moments, because this is still Steven Universe, but watching a kid at the end of his rope struggling to understand his place in the world is bound to be harrowing stuff. Steven’s determination is compounded by his solitude: the Crystal Gems are pointedly absent, as the last time he asked them for answers his dad got abducted to a space zoo and it’s easy to confuse correlation with causation. So it’s just Steven and Lion for most of the episode, and it’s telling that Lion answers Steven’s final cry for help by bringing him to see his dad. Some things can only be fixed by talking, and for all his strengths, Lion isn’t a great conversationalist.
Tumblr media
Before we get to Greg, this Steven/Lion solo outing uses constant activity to sidestep the dullness factor that bogged down Steven’s Lion. After a strong first impression of Steven’s mental state as he scours Rose’s tape for clues, going so far as to try to find meanings in anagrams, Lion revs up the plot by retching up a giant key. I love that Steven’s first thought is the same as mine, and likely yours: the chest in Lion’s mane that we first saw in Lion 3, which unlike Bismuth remained a mystery (and it still is, because we never saw what Steven found in there between Change Your Mind and the movie). Even though the key is comically oversized, Steven ignores the obvious and keeps trying to make it fit. So right off the bat, we get two little stories about Steven looking for answers where there clearly aren’t any and doubling down despite the futility out of sheer desperation for the truth.
From here we get a montage of past locations a la Marble Madness and Warp Tour, accompanied by a gorgeous medley of location themes from Aivi and Surasshu; I will never not complain that we don’t get to have an album of their scoring, because this episode’s soundtrack is one of their best. Visiting the Armory harks back to Lion 2 as the tape did for Lion 3, and we also get a glimpse of Rose’s Fountain and Rose’s Room to continue our references to the many known areas tied to Steven’s mom. When nothing works, Steven pleads with Lion for more information, aware by now that the cat has some answers.
While I’m not huge on Steven’s Lion as an episode due to the aforementioned dull pace, it’s awesome to see our heroes return to where Lion was first found. Buddy’s Book already did a great job of reminding us of Lion’s desert home, but now it’s time to finally investigate the area further.
Tumblr media
Jesse Zuke and Raven Molisee paired up for our last episode, leaving their usual respective partners Hilary Florido and Paul Villeco at bat for Lion 4. The ragtag team has so far given us rich visuals, with a particularly expressive Steven and Lion (crucial for the non-talking member of the duo) and a callback to the lovely settings of the past, but every aesthetic choice they make is topped by the desert run. It’s a beautiful shot, evoking the iconic ocean run of Lion 2, but Steven’s exhaustion (aided by Zach Callison’s beleaguered performance as he narrates his thoughts) tinges the scene with melancholy where there was once only magic. Steven’s desperation is no longer the frenzied need from when Greg was kidnapped, or even from the beginning of this very episode, but has been worn down to a weary determination that just breaks your heart. This is Charlie Brown after a yanked football too many; he hasn’t been thrown a single bone in his search for answers, and this might be his last chance.
I try not to include too many images in these reviews, because they can mess with the flow of the text, but screw it this shot is also amazing:
Tumblr media
The pyramid-like structures leading to the locked door are the first we see of a new hidden getaway, and retrospect makes Steven’s plight even worse: as we learn in Legs From Here to Homeworld, all he had to do was touch one of them to get a major hint about Rose’s true identity.
It wouldn’t have solved everything, as Garnet would likely assume they were spoils of war, Amethyst wouldn’t recognize them, and Pearl would keep her mouth shut. And it would’ve ruined the pacing of the mystery for such a strange hint to be presented, so from a storytelling perspective it makes total sense to keep this in the backburner. And it’s not like it’s that weird that Steven doesn’t feel compelled to touch what seems to be a couple of statues when he’s spent the whole episode looking for a lock and it’s right in front of him and he just survived hours of desert travel. But knowing what we know now adds to the drama of how close our hero is to the truth he deserves.
Tumblr media
In yet another bummer, Rose’s hidden landfill is worn down to the point where most of the walls had collapsed, meaning Steven didn’t even need the key. Which isn’t to say the key wasn’t important, as it prompts his trip in the first place, but it’s just one more way that the universe seems to be throwing unnecessary hurdles at him. In the same vein, Lion not only could’ve warped him to the destination as he mentions, but he could’ve done so without hacking up the key in the first place. But we’re long past the point where we should expect straight answers from Lion, so I forgive the big lug.
The first thing that came to my mind when Steven saw the dump wasn’t Amethyst’s room, although there are obvious similarities. It was Greg’s storage locker, the place where we first talked about Rose all the way back in Laser Light Cannon, the place where Greg expressed confusion about why a magic woman fell for a regular guy like him. And as frustrated as Steven is, this room is a wonderful unspoken answer to that distant question: among Rose’s many imperfections was that, like Greg, she was kind of a slob. It’s so nice to have a mundane flaw after nearly a full season of focusing on her as a liar and murderer, especially a flaw that reminds us of why she and Greg were so great for each other.
But yeah, Steven isn’t interested in subtext, and his tantrum is both realistic and reasonable. He finds the tape for Nora by accident, right after kicking some garbage in anger, and this is where that Speak Like a Child oomph comes in. It’s crystal clear that the tape was a backup in case Steven was a girl, but he’s so primed for lies and complications that the obvious answer eludes him and he suspects the worst. I honestly can’t blame him. If you learned out of nowhere that your mom killed someone, who’s to say you don’t have secret siblings?
Tumblr media
The contrast between harsh desert and soothing sunset is another treat for the eyes, readying is for a cooldown after two distressing acts. Greg’s excitement over seeing the old tape blinds him to Steven’s angst in a way that adds honest tension to the exchange, because he’s trying to give Steven a fun treat but has no idea how much anguish his son has been through to get to this point. To Greg, telling Steven the answers outright would be ruining the moment, but the wait is already killing the kid. In an episode without an external villain it’s such a clever way to present a final “confrontation” to overcome.
When we finally see the tape, it becomes even more apparent that it was a backup for a hypothetical daughter. Still, I love how the strange new version of a video we know and love is only half-seen, as we focus so much on Steven’s reaction at the expense of footage. Where he was once gazing at the marvels of a new glimpse of his mother, his eyes are now furrowed in frustrated concentration. As in Lion 3, he has a viewing partner, and Greg’s welling tears mirror those of Steven and Sadie from the first tape, highlighting that the Steven of the present isn’t feeling an ounce of tenderness.
Tears do come for Steven, but in the form of anxious release. When he’s told that he’s Nora, meaning he’s the person the tape was intended for, Steven still doesn’t get it and exclaims that he’s his mom and his sister; it’s sort of a joke, but boy is it rough to hear him slip that in some way he does see himself as his mom rather than his own person. So thank goodness he’s saying this stuff to Greg, who’s calm at first but leaps to the occasion when Steven frantically asks why he exists.
As is standard by now, Greg's got fatherhood down cold. He adjusts his tone to show he’s taking Steven seriously, but rather than jump in he sits his son down and lets him talk. He addresses Steven’s concerns gently but firmly, leaving no room for doubt that he’s loved and appreciated no matter what. He brings himself into the conversation by saying he changed his name, doing so not to turn the topic to himself but to reassure Steven that it’s okay to not be stuck on one identity. And just look at how perfectly our three main characters exist in the shot during this last talk:

Steven gets those happy post-tape tears after viewing the last part of the video, and our happy ending is earned, but it’s not a full victory. Rose still had issues, but at least Steven has gained some confidence back that she wasn’t all bad. He’ll go back and forth on how much guilt he feels for her actions, but at the very least he knows now that his decisions to try and atone for her mistakes are his to make, and not a mandate from a dead parent looking for an escape route.
Whiiiiiiich means that now he’s able to try and feign a sense of control over helpless situations by assigning blame to himself in new, exciting ways. Hey, it’s not like the show could’ve solved all his problems less than halfway through Act III of the series. Lion 4 thus doesn’t have the conclusive oomph of Lion 3, which closed a trilogy of Lion Episodes as well as the stage of the show where Rose was a well-realized but distant idea more than a full character. For all its strengths, Lion 4 feels much more like Just Another Episode. But that’s okay. It doesn’t owe the past a thing.
Future Vision!
Again, those pyramids return in a major way, because they’re not pyramids.
Greg talks about Garnet’s inability to predict things about Steven, which is an element of their relationship throughout the show but gets major focus soon in Pool Hopping.
Escapism blends the two big Lion Runs by setting it back on the ocean, but making the passenger an exhausted Steven facing one last ordeal before relief in the form of his dad with a guitar.
We’re the one, we’re the ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!
It doesn’t make the top twenty, it does make the top twenty-five. Just like Bismuth right before our hundredth episode, this doesn’t mean much now, but it will next time, because I’m expanding again to a Top Twenty-Five when we hit the big One Two Five with Doug Out.

Congratulations, ART! You’ve been accepted for the role of EDMUND with an approved FC change to Max Irons. Admin Minnie: I knew this was a winner while reading your plots Art, but it was your para sample that really left me speechless. The way you showed us how he had suffered and how he had ached, all that bitterness and resentment and ambition and pride... it was so clear how deep your love for Edmund goes. I am thrilled to see someone with such an intimate, intense grasp on Easton’s soul. Please stay forever, and please ruin us for the rest of your life! Please read over the checklist and send in your blog within 24 hours.
WELCOME TO THE MOB.
OUT OF CHARACTER
Alias | Art
Age | 19
Preferred Pronouns | He/him
Activity Level | Well here’s the thing about quarantine. I will be spending the next two-three months in a house, all day, every day, with consistent access to a laptop. I also lost my job and because the US economy is a flaming pile of garbagé, I don’t imagine getting another any time soon, especially since all my skills are in food. All this to say, I believe I will be incredibly active, outside of my Skype’d classes and grocery runs and whatnot.
Timezone | MST
How did you find the rp?  | A discord friend DM’d it to me after I went on a rant about Edmund and the layers to his “Thou, Nature, art my Goddess” soliloquy. They know me so well, and acceptances were literally in like six hours from when I got the link, so I sat my butt down, put down my real-world obligations for a moment, and typed this whole thing out like I was writing an unstarted essay due at midnight.
Current/Past RP Accounts | All my old RP writing is from years ago and is, frankly, really really bad. Thank you for making this optional.
IN CHARACTER
Character | Edmund or Easton Craven. I love Daniel Sharman’s wonderful, gorgeous face with my whole heart (hello gay awakening), but I’d like to use Max Irons instead, if at all possible.
What drew you to this character? | So, my love of Easton/Edmund actually began about a year ago, when I cut my hair and started playing around with names and different clothes. I was in a Shakespeare class at my college, and it was a requirement that we perform a monologue. It didn’t need to be Broadway-worthy, we just needed to deliver it, and we could do this as often as we liked. I performed two. One from a play we had read and analyzed, as my professor asked, and I did another. That second one was Edmund’s “Thou, Nature” soliloquy. It was the first time I performed as a guy to an audience that thought I was a guy, not a girl playing dress up. So I have a really strong emotional connection to Edmund, regardless of the form he’s in.
I was really excited by this particular version of him, however, because I thought it played right along the line of a monstrous asshole and charming young man doing what he can to deal with the hand dealt to him. He’s both of those things, to me, and I really enjoyed that you brought that forward. Edmund, from the source, reminds me of Chris Evans’ character from Knives Out, in a way? Completely self-motivated, selfish and cruel, and yet really fun and charming, as long as it isn’t you he’s screwing over at the time. I know he isn’t that character and I’m honestly really glad for it. I just found a similarity there.
I just really like those kinds of characters in fiction, and that, combined with my emotional ties and vague debt to the source character, meant I arrived and started writing as fast as I could.
What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character? |
These are all ideas, nothing here is set in stone, and are entirely dependent on the beauty of the other writers free will.
Some Twelve or Fourteen Moonshines Lag of a Brother: From the get-go of this awful experience known as the human existence, Easton has existed just slightly behind Everett, just enough to keep the guy freezing in the shadows. It’s the last name, the mannerisms, and the goddamn eyes that sit in his skull. It is a truth, acknowledged by both me and him, that there is an association to Easton he really wishes wasn’t there. This is why I want someone to look at Easton and see Easton, not a Craven.
Now, I want to pause here, and say that Easton is a lying snake of a man that would and probably will sell out his own family for one corn chip. He is completely self-centered, convinced of his superiority, and willing to bleed the world dry to get the pound of flesh he is owed. I want someone to see this, to realize there is a snake curled around the Capulet’s necks, willing to bite and kill every single one of them if it means he gets to sit comfortably on a throne of gold and bones. Because that is what he wants, he wants the world to pay for every second of misery he endured in his life. But he is charming, slippery in the way only the truly awful can be. He’s accepted the labels thrown at him and become them, which is its own kind of armor. Who doesn’t love a bad boy?
But beyond all that, he is rotten through and through. I’d like his armor to crack and reveal the duplicity underneath, maybe around someone like Maeve or Catherine, someone that might not be believed right away. I love the idea of Easton being the wolf among some very dangerous sheep, but the really, truly awful ones not realizing. This could produce a really fun dance, where the two parties involved both try really really hard to overthrow or remove the other from their position while still trying really hard to maintain a veil of normality.
But that dance is what makes this all so terribly fun. They’re on a rock, doomed to eventually die, and Easton wants his power, but why can’t he play a few games while trying to get it?
I Grow, I Prosper: Easton, poor guy, was brought into the world and then spent the next twenty-six years being told his existence and all the things that came with it were his fault. They weren’t, or at least they weren’t in the way he had been told his entire life. He has learned to move past the label of “bastard” or “illegitimate”, meeting all such claims with the certainty that he must act the part. But does his position fulfill him? Does his current lot in life spark joy? I think not! He is a captain, yes, but so is his brother. He is, at best, on equal footing with his brother and at worst, he is the younger brother desperately following behind Everett as a living shadow yet again. Easton needs to be more than Everett. He’s wanted this his entire life. The whole city needs to look at Easton and see him, not his brother, and then Easton wants to rub it in Everett’s face, lord it over him for the next century at the shortest. That is the general idea behind this plot: Everett surpassing and overcoming his brother. The fact that he’d end up lording over so many others is really just a plus!
This plot would require effort. Loads and LOADS of plotting and communication on my part, and a whole lot of cutthroat, stepping-on-literally-everyone-else-in-Verona from Easton. He is going to have to exploit the hell out of Celeste and the information she can get him, potentially leading to her downfall just so Easton can succeed. He will need Rafaella and Tiberius to trust him almost unconditionally, which, just from what I’ve seen poking around the main, seems pretty much impossible. And of course, he has to successfully and continually one-up Everett, which might be the hardest job of all, given the whole awful tangle of EmotionsTM that Easton has towards him. It’s hard for him to be clear-headed when he wants to tear Everett into little tiny pieces with his bare hands.
But hey, that is, again, the whole point of this plot: the destruction of the legitimate son. Eliminating the sun so the moon can rule 24/7.
My Services are Bound: No matter how ambitious, how desperate Easton is to rule the world, he doesn’t yet. He works for the Capulets and he is a tool used to further the wishes of those above him in this terribly illegal food chain where dog eats dog. No matter how much Easton wishes it was different, it isn’t, at least not at the moment, and he must bide his time until something better happens.
Yes, Easton is a tool, and I want him to be reminded of that. He has the ambition to rule the world, can picture himself with a crown he may never hold, but he is a knight on the chessboard. I want his ego to be checked, I want him to be taken down at the knees and reminded of the situation he is in, who he works for. Now, ideally, this would come from the Capulet family themselves and not a rogue Montague or something.
The Capulet family, in order to win this war they’ve found themselves in, need their tools to be obedient and ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. This is not the case with Easton. He’s a rebellious man, more loyal to himself than any of the lofty ideas the Capulet heads have surrounded themselves with. So the family he serves would need to get Easton back in line, somehow. They’d need to remind him who he is and whom he serves no matter what it took and use whatever tools at their disposal. This could potentially happen after Easton completely blows off a mission he was handed to advance his own agendas, which I think would probably be the best choice as it would probably send these awful shrieking sirens off in the Capulets.
I want this particular plot because Easton is so assured that he will be able to make the world pay and yet he’s just one man against so very many others.
Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | Oh most definitely. As a writer, I am a firm believer in conditional happy endings, probably because I play so many video games. In order to get a happy ending, in order to survive, the character has to do all the right things. The likelihood of Easton doing all the right things is just tiny, absolutely microscopic.
IN DEPTH
I was going to do both, but I’m running out of time so…
In-Character Para Sample:
There is something beautiful in standing alone, where there are no silent reminders of how Easton arrived in this world, how he stepped into it screaming and no one cared to change that. There were no side-eyes, reminding him of how unwanted he was, how utterly unworthy he was to bear the name “Craven”. No hands hiding giggles at the boy his mother ran from and his father hid away. Here, under the bowed ceiling in the transept of the Capulet’s cathedral, there was only him and God.
“I hope,” Easton began, fingers lightly running across the back of a pew likely not used for praying, “that you know what is coming.” The eyes that proclaim a taint to his family’s name were raised to dance across the ceiling. “If word is to be believed, you, an old man in the sky, a Father,” he spat out, “brought me here. Placed me here upon this Earth to do whatever it is I so wish.” A smile, small and dangerous with heavy promises was birthed on his face, an expression that could not have been more familiar to his muscles. “I suppose that’s all a father has ever done for me. Perhaps,” he mused, lightly tapping his chin as he continued to wander aimlessly among the seats of a flock absent. “Perhaps I should be grateful that both You and him are both so delightfully hands-off.”
“I suppose this rock is where You chose to put all Your bastards, isn’t it? Shoved them away from Your kingdom, making them fight for their place in Your home despite them all being Your children?” The noise that escaped Easton’s mouth was not fit for the place he stood in, but it hardly seemed to matter to him as he collapsed into a pew, feet raised to rest on a Bible, feet that had stood in a man’s blood not hours before. “I suppose that must be how it is, because we’re all made in Your image, aren’t we? And that man had to learn it from somewhere.”
His head fell back, eyes closed to the beauty above him in a silent condemnation for Who it was built for. “You’ve released yet another snake into your garden by making that woman my mother and handing me the Craven name, you know.” The observation was quiet, laced with the bitterness of cyanide, perfected over years of similar declarations. The words were familiar, not on his tongue but rather to his mind, the idea similar to ones he had kept close for years.“I have crawled in the dirt on my stomach for too long because of You, and I shall take a throne and dare You to steal it from me.”
He inhaled, once, a desperate attempt to calm the words he could feel rising like acid in his throat. It didn’t work, though Easton didn’t try very hard. He rarely did when alone. “I am owed this, you miserable old bastard,” he hissed out from behind his teeth, sounding like the snake he had just claimed to be. “I will take everything because this is Your fault, and I will make your precious sheep pay for every inch of Your mistake. It’s mine, I deserve it.” A hand was clenched into a fist in his lap and Easton shifted forward, only to slam it into the wood of the pew ahead of him. “It’s mine.”
He stood suddenly, coat rising around him like smoke rising around a fire, warning the world of the danger just over there. Turning on his heel, he left the cathedral without a look back, without a fear of God. And though there had been no one around, the air hung heavy with a question. Just which father had he been addressing?
Extras: If you have anything else you’d like to include (further headcanons, an inspo tag, a mock blog, etc), feel free to share it here! This is OPTIONAL.
I submitted this through an Easton mock blog! There was going to be stuff there but my laptop crashed and I need to eat dinner!

Whit-ty Headcanons: Whitley and Penny
yellow-eyed-green-crocodile asked :
Beta Testers/Broken Machines headcanon: Jacque goes to a bussiness meeting to the Atlas Military to discuss how they'll buy more Dust from him for thus new project, and he brings Whitley with him. There, they are shown Penny, who is put back together, but is deactivated, and then they are shown lines of new milotary robots being produced, all based on Penny, but "improved". Then, the guide activates Penny, in order to show them a short example of how the new robots will behave and fight.
Jacque isn't as interested in roboth fighting as he is interested making money, but Whitley, from the moment he first set eyes on Penny, he couldn't take them away from her. He felt like he was seeing a part of himself in her, even if it was just a broken machine. Or maybe this is just what he was himself. When she was brought back to life in front of them, she said her catchphrases "Salutations!" and "I'm combat ready!", but in a tone full of hopelessness. Whitley could barely take it.
(I feel like I'm writing a full-on fanfic at this point) He wanted to go up to her and give her consolation. It was the first time that he ever felt that way in years. The last time he rememberd feeling empathy was when he saw Weiss crying after a show that she performed, back when they were just toddlers. Whitley refrained himself from showing any emotion in front of his father. They were on a bussiness trip, after all. But, ever since then, he continued to visit the facility,
Under the pretense that he was interested in learning things for the sake of the future of the SDC , but he actually just went to look at Penny some more. Maybe he liked seeing someone in a situation just like his or maybe he truly fell in love with a robot. The thought amused him. This is how he would spend his weekends, when he had free time between his lessons. What do you think? I think I'll make this into a fanfic and post the link on my blog. I'll tag you, if you want.
miki-13 asked:
Please don't let one bad apple ruin the experience of Broken Machines/Beta Testers, squiggles! It's thanks to your art that I've jumped on the ship train as well; your idea that Whitley has a Little Prince experience like Oscar is golden, just thinking about he and Penny interacting gives me warm fuzzies and it's also a clever way to bring Whitley into the fold of Weiss' friends since they can bond over their friendship with the original Penny.
Also I couldn't add this on earlier because of the character limit, but I noticed that Penny has both reddish hair (like Ruby) and freckles (like Oscar) and is both a sweet bean while having self esteem issues and an identity crisis... so it's like Whitley is getting the best of both worlds (that being Ruby and Oscar) in Penny!
I just had a thought: so say that Whitley managed to get a genuine friendship from Penny 1.0 and Jacques noticed. Thinking that his son was more fascinated by the machine rather than finally having a friend that wasn't trying to use him for his name, once the Penny 2.0 series came out... Jacques got one for Whitley. Thrown off by the girl he cared for being made into things for anyone to use really screwed with Whitley and actually made him begin to resent Jacques, and pull away from his father.
Squiggles Answers:
Tumblr media
@miki-13 @yellow-eyed-green-crocodile Hey guys! I decided to rope both of your answers together because ironically enough, you two  expressed almost the same kind of headcanon but in different ways.
I’ll start with you Yellow: if you make your idea into a fanfic then I’d love to read it. Most definitely. I can actually combine both of yours and Miki’s headcanons. Both of them together with my original small headcanon forms the premise for a really sweet Broken Machines/ Beta Testers story.
I love the idea of Whitley being introduced the original Penny through General Ironwood prior to the main canon plot; initially believe her to be a real person at first; not knowing that she was a robot and the two hitting it off as friends despite only meeting that one time before Penny left for Vale. Then after the broadcast of the Vytal Festival, Whitley learns the truth.
Do you know what could be interesting? Remember Whitley’s comment to Weiss in V4 about his opinion of the huntsmen being ‘barbaric’.
Tumblr media
Imagine an alternate universe where Whitley’s reasoning behind that term is because he, like many people of Atlas tuned in for the broadcast of the Vytal Festival where he observed Penny’s progress in the tournament up until the point she was revealed to be a machine and torn to shreds before the public eye.
Tumblr media
Imagine a universe where Whitley was traumatized by Penny’s decapitation and that’s why he finds the huntsmen lifestyle to be beneath him apart from his justification about him and his father. I still wish to stand by my Whit-ty headcanon where I think Whitley has powers just like his sisters.
Tumblr media
I absolutely refuse to let go of this Whitley theory. I’m sticking to my guns on Whitley being as much of a Schnee as Weiss and Winter and thus will unlock his family semblance in time. Bonus if Whitley unlocks his family power to actually save or protect one of his sisters (Weiss) or someone he grew to consider a close friend worth protecting (like Oscar).
An experience after which, Weiss will agree to train Whitley on how to control his newfound abilities the same way Winter taught her; bringing their relationship almost full circle.
Tumblr media
I’m pulling for this theory just as much as my headcanon about Whitley attending Atlas Academy as a means of understanding his sisters’ pursuit of the huntsmen lifestyle. I love the idea of Whitley reuniting with Weiss while she’s continuing her training at Atlas Academy.
The ideaI had in mind is that after Jacques learnt of Weiss’ return to the kingdom and her attendance of Atlas Academy, he personally had Whitley enrolled in the school as a means of using him to woo his sister back to their side or sabotaging it.
By my headcanons, Whitley is the huntsman in Weiss’ Snow White story. In the original fairy-tale, the Evil Queen used the huntsman to kill Snow White but the huntsman spared Snow White after she pleaded for her life.
I think the role of the Whitley being Weiss’ huntsman is very fitting because it plays on Whitley’s caring and sympathetic nature towards his older sister while tying into his loyalty and obedience of their father. I love the idea of Whitley being sent to Atlas to spy on his sister for Jacques but the reality is that Whitley also had his own agenda for going to Atlas. One was because he wanted to learn for himself what the big deal about being a huntsman was all about out of his own curiosity and secondly he wanted to use the opportunity to possibly develop the kind of close relationship and trust he’s always desired with his sisters. Particularly Weiss.
I am an advocate for Whitley being the Nebula to Weiss’ Gamora. My impression is that Whit has always wanted to have that closeness with his sister but due to their father and Weiss’ misunderstandings of her brother’s intentions, Weiss and Whit had a strained relationship from the start.
My theory is that as a child, Whit would always try to get close to Weiss since he admired her dearly and desired to share a close friendship with her as Weiss had with Winter. However, Whit’s actions toward his sisters usually resulted in more trouble than good leading to huge misunderstandings. Because of this, Weiss was left with the impression that Whitley’s advancements and extensions of kindness were meant as a sign of him manipulating her when in reality, he just wanted to be close with his sister.
Similar to Gamora and Nebula, Weiss is the one who always believed that Whitley just wanted to manipulate and control her like their father when all Whitley wanted---what he truly wanted was a sister.
Whitley: I don’t need you always seeing my actions as trying to manipulate you!
Weiss: Oh really? I’m not the one who once said being a huntsman is beneath him yet magically shows up at the same huntsman Academy I just happen to be at. Your little playing huntsman charade might be fooling my friends but you’re not fooling me. Not again! You’re just here because father put you up to it. He sent you to toy with me.
Whitley: Stop acting like everything I do is for father.
Weiss: But isn’t that what you once said? It’s foolish to not do what father wants. Weren’t those your exact words?
Whitley: Yes but that was before ---
Weiss: Before WHAT? You miraculously had a change of heart? Save it! You know you were always father’s favourite. His perfect little puppet.
Whitley: No I’m NOT! Do not tell me what my intentions are. You don’t know me at all!
Weiss: I know exactly the kind of person you are, Whitley. You’re just as sneaky and manipulative and controlling as father. You’re just like him!
Whitley: WRONG!  That’s how YOU see me! But that’s NOT WHO I AM! You’re the one who’s always seen me as being father’s pawn. You’re the one who thinks I’m just like him.  You’re the one who thinks I want to manipulate you like father but do you actually know what I want! What I really want? I JUST WANT MY SISTER!
All Whitley desires is to have a close bond with his sisters and if that ain’t his endgame then this squiggle meister will be incredibly disappointed.
I want to talk so much more about Whitley being a student of Atlas and his desire to develop an actual relationship with Weiss but this isn’t the headcanon  post for this. Regarding Broken Machines/ Beta Testers, this ties into Miki’s theory now about Jacques noticing Whitley interest in the Penny series sold to the public and thus he buys him  his own personal model.
But in reality, Whit can’t stop thinking about the original Penny he met. The one he saw as his one and only. The true Penny he had befriended, even though it was brief. The Penny he saw for being just a girl and not a machine.
This makes me even think about…what if…Whitley buys original Penny? Or tries to. I once shared a Pinehead headcanon post about the Atlas Council ordering the Military to mass produce Penny’s design before discarding her original model to the trash dumps down in Mantle.
I love your idea Yellow of Whitley spending his weekends visiting the facility where Penny is being housed to be used into mass production of the PNNY series.
Oh! Oh! What if…after the heroes befriend Whitley, he’s the one that helps Ruby and Oscar find the original Penny? What if it’s some kind of secret adventure with the trio where Whitley informs Ruby where original Penny is being housed and Whitley helps her and Oscar get into the base where they were housing Penny only to learn that they had already discarded her to Mantle.
Then again with Whitley’s help, Ruby and Oscar travel down to Mantle to retrieve Penny’s original model from the scrap junkyards below in Mantle---the same scrap heap home to my Grimm Monstro headcanon. I am still in love with the idea of there being a giant monstrous land whale type Grimm swimming through piles of junk to prey on unsuspecting visitors and scrap who happen to fall into its domain. Imagine Whitley going out of his way to help Ruby and Oscar rescue Penny and he even assists is her reconstruction.
I’m still holding onto my Pinehead headcanon of Oscar revealing that he has a hidden talent for engineering that he inherited from all the way back to his days on the farm which inspires him to become an inventing student under Dr. Polendina who doubles as a professor at Atlas Academy. I am still holding onto my theory about Oscar being the primary person to aid Ruby in repairing and restoring original Penny. And now for the Beta Testers, I’ll add Whitley to this theory too with our Schnee boy taking a personal investment in this venture because he wants to reunite with Penny again.
I mean, just imagine if Penny was someone Whitley considered his first true friend. The one person to meet him who didn’t know who he was or didn’t care that he was a Schnee. Imagine Penny and Whitley meeting that one time but still leaving that one lasting impression on each other. And when Penny is restored, to Whitley’s surprise, she remembers him.
Even after all that she’s been through, original Penny still remembered Whitley after all she promised him that she’d meet again when she returns to Atlas which puts a genuine smile on Whitley’s face. Maybe even makes him cry a little or shed on gangster tear he tries to hide.
How’s that for an idea ey?

GHOST ON TRIBUTE TO FALLEN FAN, FILM PLANS, WHY METALLICA IS LIKE "AN OLD LOVER"
Main man Tobias Forge discusses "beautiful" capes, future endeavors, avoiding the "predictable"
Tumblr media
It's high noon in Omaha, Nebraska on November 6th, and Tobias Forge is enjoying a few hours of downtime before Ghost take the stage on their latest headlining tour. "With the intermission, the show is two hours and forty minutes," the band's mastermind says. "Not including 45 minutes to an hour of meet and greet and then just getting ready. It's short day, but very hectic."
Making matters more hectic, Ghost recently added a previously unscheduled show to their itinerary: Milwaukee on Halloween. Intended as a makeup date for a gig that was cut short on May 31st after an audience member passed away during the band's set at the Riverside Theater, the latest Milwaukee performance also served as a tribute to the fallen fan, Jeffery Fortune. "He fell down and succumbed to a heart condition mid-show, basically," Forge explains.
"Sometimes at big shows, people get injured and whisked off to hospital and you don't really know their fate, so it might not affect the show," he continues."But this took place in front of a completely lit-up room. People were standing in a circle and watching this man pass away. It was a horrifying scene — his wife and son were there — so we cut the show short and decided to make it up on one of our days off on this tour. We figured that would be a good way to make it up to the family and to the 2,000 people who just saw half a concert. It felt very good, very purposeful."
YOU MADE A SPECIAL T-SHIRT AVAILABLE AT THE MILWAUKEE SHOW, FEATURING AN IMAGE OF JEFF FORTUNE AND FRONTMAN CARDINAL COPIA DRESSED AS MICHAEL MYERS FROM HALLOWEEN. ALL THE PROCEEDS FROM THE SHIRT WENT TO THE FAMILY, WHICH WAS VERY COOL OF YOU TO DO. TOBIAS FORGE As you all know, when you have someone passing away here in America, especially if it's a parent, it might cause a quite drastic economic toll on the family. So we definitely wanted to do our best in order to contribute something. The fans were super-great — they made a GoFundMe that I know the family got a lot of money from. They seemed to be ok, which I'm happy about.
YOU MET WITH THE FAMILY, THEN? Yes, we spent some time with them before the show the other night because I wanted to make sure… we'd been in contact before about the rescheduling of the show, because we wanted to make sure they wanted to partake or whether or not they wanted to have the show as a tribute to their husband and father. And also if we could use his likeness — things like that you just wanna be very kosher about. You don't wanna step on any toes. You never know how people handle things like that, so we wanted to talk with them and make sure everything was ok. And apparently I ran into some of them before — they were saying hi outside the bus or something at one of our other Milwaukee shows.
HOW DID THE SHOW GO? It was one of those occasions where it's very important that it goes according to some sort of protocol, but nobody really knows how to do it. I'm just happy that there were no problems whatsoever. It would've gone wrong even if there was a power cut or anything that interrupted the show once more. All it takes is one drunk guy in the silence to screw it up. But everybody did their darnedest and the crowd was wonderful. Everybody understood why we were all there.
ON A LIGHTER NOTE, TELL US ABOUT THE CAPE THAT CARDINAL COPIA HAS BEEN ROCKING ON THIS TOUR. HE LOOKS RESPLENDENT IN IT. It's beautiful. That was a silhouette that we'd never tried on any of the front figures, but once he put it on it was like, "Of course he needs one of those." There's something utterly cool about that sort of cape. It does wonders.
THERE'VE BEEN RUMORS THAT GHOST MIGHT BE RELEASING SOMETHING NEXT YEAR. CAN WE EXPECT ANOTHER COVERS EP, PERHAPS? Well, there might be something coming next year. As an active person, I've spent some time in the studio, but we'll see. We're still sort of planning the year out. But as of right now, there's no plan for another covers EP. I think that would be a little predictable. I'm all for recording covers in the future, but we're definitely not going to do one that comes out in 2019. And even though we made a live record last year, the one thing I am very keen on is making a film, for lack of another phrase. I really want to make a capture of our live show. Since the live record, which I think is very good, we sound way better now. We're a better band, and now with everything being performed organically, it's a different being. It sounds way bigger and maybe lends itself to a film better. So we'll see.
YOU'RE TOURING EUROPE NEXT SUMMER WITH METALLICA, WHOM YOU'VE PLAYED WITH A BUNCH OF TIMES BEFORE. IS OPENING FOR METALLICA JUST LIKE ANY OTHER SHOW FOR YOU AT THIS POINT, OR IS THERE STILL SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT IT? Being that they're one of my favorite bands of all time, there is of course some magic there. Even though we're more like — dare I say — colleagues at this point, and we know each other, it's still … as soon as I'm done with my show and I hear "The Ecstasy of Gold" or "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock N' Roll)," which they sometimes play over the speakers before they go on, I always transform into a kid. Whenever I hear "Master of Puppets" or "(Welcome Home) Sanitarium"… they always captivate me in a way that's like an old lover's touch. It will always make you soft. [Laughs] Or hard, as the case may be.

Let’s talk about how Ranma is trans, part 3
Continued from Part 2.
The main thing going on in Volume 21 is Ranma getting drawn into a cheerleading contest. I’m only bringing this up because my gut says there’s going to be a while because I have something to talk about, and it’s a good reminder that stuff like this is absurdly common in this series, and I’m not desperate enough for examples to need to grasp at straws like this:
Tumblr media
Ranma’s compulsive competitive streak rationalizes everything going on this page, and doesn’t particularly provide any evidence of her actually being a girl, beyond her prioritizing this victory over the humiliation and dysphoria a boy would be subjecting himself to in going down this road (which includes spending a week dating Kuno on the next page).
Now, the fact that this arc ends with Akane giving a heavy sigh at how this was Ranma’s plan A, personally going the direct route of just throwing on some kendo gear and participating in the actual martial arts competition Ranma felt compelled to cheerlead for, inspiring Ranma to cheer for her instead, and confess her love for the mysterious stranger she thinks is some mystery guy before she’s unmasked, that’s pretty telling.
Like, I don’t actually see a longterm relationship between the two of them ultimately working out, but it’s not hard to imagine this series ending with them getting married, and I can only picture that wedding ceremony with Akane in a suit and Ranma in a big poofy bridal gown. I mean, I’ve read the actual ending, and that’s still the only way I can picture it, you know?
... oh and Volume 22 picks up from here, with the gasping crowd pondering if Ranma is in girl mode when they have sex. This is relevant here as a reminder that at this point Ranma is totally out of the closet. Everyone knows about the whole curse thing, and it’s been like 18 volumes since she last attempted to pretend she was some mysterious stranger when publicly in girl mode. Also while totally off the mark of how physically intimate these two are, I appreciate that this random guy in the crowd has my back on how obviously Akane would top. That’s generally the rule of thumb when trans women date cis women by the way. There’s obviously exceptions, and I don’t want to get too sidetracked here, but, random crowd guy’s imagination is much closer to reality than most people’s.
V22C2 however is very, very significant to my whole thesis here, being the introduction of Ranma’s mother, seen here fishing Ranma out of the river after she “accidentall” falls in by walking on a faulty chain link fence:
Tumblr media
I already got into things with Nodoka here in part 1 of this series, but seriously, this whole arc here is hard for me to get through now. A mother who is outwardly incredibly sweet and kind, especially towards total strangers, while quietly deeply conservative about traditional gender roles, and who threatens to kill her own trans daughter if she deviates from the “manly man” role she envisions for her hits entirely too close to home for me today.
Also for some reason, since starting this series, like a dozen people have gotten upset with me for referring to Genma being abusive in the same fashion, but aside from the general abusive nature of that relationship, no, the suicide pact of manliness was totally his idea. People just edit their memories because we’re all conditioned to blame women for everything.
Tumblr media
So now we’ve got this flashback to having an infant Ranma “sign a contract” by pouring ink on her hand and letting her slap a piece of paper as Nodaka reminds everyone how seriously she’s taking this. Ranma blurts out “Ranko” as a cover name to avoid being outed to her. Real trans people almost never go that route, but it took me years to work out what I wanted to change mine name to officially. You take your time and keep thinking about it girl.
Ranma’s reaction to this information is getting, justifiably, quite angry at Genma for making this agreement, as she is now forced to deceive her mother, instead of immediately coming out to her. By the way, here’s Ranma getting mad at Akane for referring to her as manly and handsome in boy mode. Like, yeah, mitigating factor that you’re lying to prevent her from getting murdered, but it is incredibly painful to hear that sort of misgendering crap from people you care about in any circumstances.
Tumblr media
... OK I don’t want to waste my whole scan pasting budget on this book when there’s still so many to go in this batch, but I could paste in every page. Nabiki of all people (Akane’s sister, sells candid nudes of Ranma to dudes who have crushes on her) refuses to go along with the lie here. When asked how Ranma spends all her spare time fighting (which is technically true), she corrects that to spending all her time running around in increasingly feminine costumes. Some “they were saying Boo-urns” later, Ranma asks her what the hell, and turns out she isn’t just trying to be a jerk. Her mom’s long dead, and the thought of Ranma missing out on a serious emotional reconnection to her mother because she’s scared of how she’ll react to her “son” being a girl. On the one hand, that is a surprisingly sincere and real feeling bit of character development for an otherwise largely one-dimensional character who normally comes across as a heartless jerk. On the other hand, SCREW YOU NABIKI! YOU DO NOT OUT TRANS PEOPLE TO THEIR ABUSIVE FAMILY LIKE THAT! IT CAN GET PEOPLE KILLED, AND YOU ACTUALLY KNOW THAT!
Soun encourages her to stay closeted around her, but try and form as much of a positive connection as she can otherwise, which is a much healthier approach. Mostly this means hanging out with her in girl mode hoping she doesn’t catch on. She tries actually approaching him in boy mode, usually thwarted by shenanigans because this is a comedy. The one time she actually reaches her though, just before introducing herself as her “son,” she hears her speculating that maybe Ranma is avoiding her because Ranma really isn’t manly.
Tumblr media
... OK I could stop this whole analysis on that first panel there. This isn’t subtext at this point. That’s not performative dialog. That’s Ranma talking to herself about how she feels better embracing her femininity, as she voluntarily activates her “curse,” having realized that she is so undeniably, fundamentally female that she can no longer convincingly pull off pretending to be a boy.At this point in the series, she’s clearly no longer an egg in heavy denial. She has had that contemplative moment every trans woman goes through eventually where we break through every lie we told ourselves about who we really are growing up, accepted who she really is, and knows you can’t ever go back at that point. Good for you Ranma, I know how hard pushing past that emotional wall can be, especially when it means alienating family like this.
The rest of that volume is light gag stuff, although there is a bit where Ranma ponders if she’s changed in some fundamental way where girls no longer like her. Volume 23 brings Pantyhose Taro back He’s still an openly transphobic creep, I still hate him. Ranma still glares at him over the slurs, but notably never tries to defend herself by claiming to be a guy. Oh and Nodoka shows up again, to teach the girls to cook. Complex feelings from Ranma there, obviously.
Also, I’m not going to throw up a scan for this one, because I’m trying to avoid pages with topless girls, but a good chunk of this volume involves Ryoga accidentally hitting Ranma with this magical Cupid’s Arrow type fishing rod, causing her to fall in love with him, and... yeah it’s made pretty clear that she prefers to be in girl mode if she’s going to sleep with someone.
Volume 24 introduces Herb, the final curse victim in the series, having fallen into the same spring Ranma did. Herb however is clearly a guy. He’s actually doubly cursed, having been hit with a magic ladle that locks people in curse forms unless hit with a matching unlocking artifact (which Ranma is also hit with, and a couple others as this arc goes on), but rather than going “Welp, I guess I’ll start wearing cute dresses and dating guys! every time I can rationalize it even a little!“ he... wears really form-concealing clothes and does his best to not even let his own underlings know he’s cursed.
That arc stretches into Volume 25, followed by a really arbitrary fight against a new teacher, with a goal of sealing away her terrifying fighting technique, just because, which everyone gives up on after a final gag. Writing gets kinda sloppy in some of these later story arcs, motivation wise. I was going to say the Herb arc makes a really strong case for genderfluid vs. female for Ranma (and again, we can totally share representation here), because other than fixing that curse freeeze, there is literally no motive for them to fight, but... that’s pretty common in the back half of the series. Fighting for fighting’s sake is Ranma’s overriding motivation in general, which is why I keep passing on using most fights as evidence.
Volume 26 is about fighting a hydra and centers characters who aren’t characters. Akane looks good in drag. See again my wedding outfit thoughts.
Volume 27 is also a lot of wacky gag stuff not really focused on Ranma. I need to break all this text up though so, Ranma buys a new bathing suit for every beach trip.
Tumblr media
Volume 28 is 100% about some random one off villain showing up in town, pretending to be Ranma, to steal something from Nodoka. You’d think I’d have more to talk about, considering, but it doesn’t really move the plot forward at all.
Volume 29 is all throwing stories to neglected side characters.
Volume 30 starts off by giving Ryoga a new love interest, in the hopes of being able to maybe pair people off in actually healthy ways, but THE HEART WANTS WHAT IT WANTS.
Tumblr media
Yeah that’s just a random gag to hit the reset button (Ranma helped him avoid another girlfriend-doesn’t-know-the-cute-pig-is-you thing, see) but I’m coming in way under budget on images and way too serious on tone so the shipping will continue. But seriously she misconstrues that and leaves and he can’t find her again because of the easily lost thing.
Not a whole lot more to say here. Hinako, the teacher Ranma arbitrarily fights actually comes back a LOT for a character I forgot even existed, introduced this late in the series. Nodoka shows up again towards the end here, and they go all “5 second rule!” with it but she’s kinda putting the pieces together here:
Tumblr media
This look at the original manga run concludes next time. I mean, in the sense that I’m going to run out of manga to reread. In the sense of proving my overall point, that happened the second I hit this panel:

BASICS
NAME: Finn Christopher Hudson AGE & BIRTHDAY: 25 | UTP OCCUPATION: UTP SEXUALITY: UTP FROM: Lima, OH
He is currently SINGLE, but his endgame is HUDROSE.
BIOGRAPHY
If you were to ask a young Finn Hudson where he thought he might end up, it probably wouldn’t be anywhere close to where he is now. Finn’s father died when he was super young. Like, too young to even know the guy at all. His mom, Carole, was awesome and played the role of two parents about as well as she could.
He appreciated his mom’s presence so much because they didn’t always get to be together. She worked. A lot. Finn didn’t know exactly what it was that she did, but she spent most of her day there. As a result, Finn had to be babysat, and that duty was taken up by one of their neighbors, Mary Evans. Carole had met her at the park or the grocery store or some other place moms go a lot. Mary offered to watch Finn for free while Carole worked, since she had a kid Finn’s age at home that she stayed at home with. So it worked out perfectly for everyone. Carole made the money that gave Finn a bed and food, Finn got to play with someone his own age, and then he got to see his mom for at least dinner and bedtime, and breakfast the next morning. It wasn’t much, but it made Finn appreciate all the time they got together.
He understood that things weren’t perfect. Carole got stressed a lot. He often heard her on the phone with friends or whatever, talking about how all she did was work and she didn’t get any extra time with Finn. He felt bad for her because he knew there was really nothing that he could do. She was working to take care of him, and as a result felt like she was neglecting him. It was sort of a vicious cycle. He wanted to make it easier on her, since there was no man of the house. So it had to be Finn, didn’t it? His mom didn’t really expect that of him, but he expected it of himself.
He got a job as soon as he was old enough. Delivering pizzas wasn’t very glamorous, but it was something he could do at the ripe age of sixteen, where all he needed was a driver’s license (and like, that was a whole story on its own, but Finn didn’t really like to get into it). He didn’t really need the money he made so he started giving it to Carole. She refused it all at first, of course. She didn’t want Finn to have to worry about that sort of thing. But he assured her that he was making his own choices. He was a man. He could take responsibility and step up. And honestly, it wasn’t like three bucks an hour plus tips was anything huge. So Finn could be the man of the house without feeling like he was giving up this crazy high salary. This was what probably got Carole to start accepting his contributions eventually.
From there, things were pretty average. Carole was less concerned with the bills and not spending enough time with Finn now that he was older. He himself had never been all that great in school, but he got by with a B average, so there was that.
Okay. B-minus. Sometimes dipping to C-plus. Whatever. He was pulling through and that was what mattered.
Everyone always told him that extra-curricular activities were super important for eventual college applications — not that Finn was ever crazy about that, but he had stuff he enjoyed, so he had his fair share of activities. He was the quarterback of the football team, an accomplishment he loved to boast, and then there was music. He wasn’t about to go audition for the school musical or anything like that. But he was a drummer, and he liked to sing. He didn’t do it a lot, especially not in front of people. It was totally cool when he was alone in his bedroom, though.
Anyway, the activities got everyone off of his back about keeping busy, so that was a plus. Between school, football, his own personal musical hobbies, and his continued gig as resident pizza delivery boy, he had plenty of things to keep him busy.
Cue Evans family crisis. It was completely unexpected. One day, Finn came home from a football practice that Sam had missed to find him, along with his parents and younger siblings, gathered in his living room with Carole. Finn was informed that they now had nowhere to live. Without anybody needing to tell him, Finn understood how this was to be dealt with. He wasn’t going to pity them and he definitely wasn’t going to judge. So he smiled, nodded, welcomed them, told them he would set up the air mattress in his room, and headed upstairs to shower.
It was that casual welcome that Carole sat him down to talk about shortly after the Evanses first arrived. She told him how proud she was that he didn’t treat them as anything less. She said that she was so thankful to have a son like him, to know that she hadn’t completely screwed up with him. And that was all Finn ever really wanted to hear. Maybe he’d never know exactly the kind of man his father was to model himself after, but he was his own man, a man his mother loved and took pride in knowing all the same.
It was Finn himself who suggested he and Sam go to New York when the Evanses were back on their feet. He was going to go to college eventually, he knew that, but not right now. Not right out of the gates. He had absolutely no idea what he wanted to do with his life while everyone around him seemed to have a plan. Except for, of course, Sam, who was right there with him, just trying to figure things out. So Finn figured there were tons of opportunities for both of them in a place like New York City. They struggled a lot at first. They couldn’t even afford, like, dishes for the first few months, let alone stuff like Netflix, so it was pretty boring for a while as they tried to find jobs. Two months in, after the honeymoon phase of their new life wore off, Finn was bagging groceries while Sam waited tables. It wasn’t glamorous and they both had long hours with little pay, but this was what they had wanted. This was their first step into the real world. Everyone had to start somewhere.
Finn knew there had to be something out there for him. His calling. The thing he was born to do. Everyone had that, right? He figured he just had to try things out. When Sam was looking into agents and modeling auditions, he absentmindedly pointed out an open casting call for actors in some random indie film. They were just looking for extras, but promised a real set experience and all that good stuff. Finn had never even considered it before but maybe this was his hidden passion. So he went for it.
Nope.
It was okay and all, but Finn was so stressed when all he had to do this time around was show up. He couldn’t imagine making that his life, going to auditions and just hearing no, no, no all the time. So, there went that, and he was back to square one. But at least now there was some random film out there with 6′4″ Finn very visible in the background. That was kinda cool.
His mom helped him make a decision. He was on the phone with her one night when she reminded him how much of a difference he had made in people’s lives without even having to try so hard. Imagine what he could accomplish if he set his mind to it completely. And that’s just what he decided to do. He enrolled in online courses (since he needed to keep his job to pay his share of the rent, and now to afford these courses) toward something he could undoubtedly do to make a difference. Teaching. He was a leader, which he knew from his experience being quarterback, and he was always told he had a big heart. He knew he probably had to work on the patience thing, but…details.
While he took his classes (which were no joke), he started substitute teaching to make sure it was really something he was into. He was completely out of his element at first at a local high school, but he got into the swing of things eventually. He really liked it. He felt like he was doing something worthwhile.
As for now, Finn is still slowly but surely working through his classes. His expected graduation is soon and he will finally hold an education degree. Until then, substitute teaching has actually been a pretty solid gig for him, especially considering long term spots that tend to open up every once in a while. Not to mention the fact that it has allowed him to explore different subjects before he really decides what he wants to focus on.
He’s making progress, and therefore making himself, his mother, and maybe even his father proud.
CONNECTIONS
MARLEY ROSE → FRIEND → Finn attended most of Artie’s band’s performances, especially in the beginning. At one show, Finn met Marley Rose, who was close with another of the band members. They spent a lot of time chatting and generally getting along really well. Before they parted ways, they casually exchanged numbers, and since then, they’ve been in contact. Marley also just happened to have met Ryder, who she would later start dating, that same night, so nothing ever went anywhere with Finn and Marley, but they’ve been in contact as friends ever since. Not like Finn had a huge crush on her that never totally went away or anything. Nope.
SAM EVANS → BEST FRIEND → Since Carole Hudson was a kind, struggling single mother to Finn and her friend Mary Evans had a son his age, Finn went to the Evanses’ every day pretty much from infancy up until until kindergarten so that Mary could watch him for free. Finn and Sam became incredibly close over their early childhood years. They grew apart a bit when they started going to school since they didn’t spend all day, every day together. They reconnected when they both joined the high school football team, and when Sam’s family lost their way, it was the Hudsons who housed them for a year. Finn and Sam became attached at the hip and ended up moving to New York City together.
KURT HUMMEL → STEPBROTHER → TBA.
TINA COHEN-CHANG → FORMER WORK FRIEND/HOOKUP → During a stint at a local high school when he was substitute teaching, Finn met Ms. Cohen-Chang, who was teaching a theatre class there. They would have coffee together in the break room, and soon that turned into casual dinners and drinks on weekends. They became close friends, even when Finn was no longer subbing at that school. One night, one thing led to another and Finn and Tina headed back to FinnSamArtie’s place, where they hooked up…and then never heard from each other again. Sex always tends to complicate friendships. It shouldn’t have really mattered because Finn was never too focused on relationships and he knows that these things just happen, but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t think about their friendship from time to time. Plus, there’s the fact that she’s now dating his freaking roommate. Which is...yikes. But Finn is slowly but surely mastering the art of deflection to prevent a shit storm from occurring.
ARTIE ABRAMS → ROOMMATE → Finn and Sam were totally broke upon first moving to New York, which was to be expected. When they were desperate, they posted an ad for a roommate. Artie Abrams swooped in at just the right time. The three of them found an apartment that they could all live in. They all meshed really well right off the bat, and Finn considers Artie a close friend of his. Which is why he keeps his mouth shut about his past with Tina, instead claiming he didn’t know her the very moment Artie mentioned they were an item. Finn really isn’t the world’s greatest actor, though, and he certainly can’t avoid Tina forever, but he hopes the truth doesn’t come out. He’s in far too deep now, and he knows it will hurt Artie to have to wonder why Finn spent so long lying about it.
RACHEL BERRY → EX-GIRLFRIEND → TBA.
✔ Finn is currently OPEN and played by TBA (AGE, TIME).

date: 24 december 2017, approx. 11:00 pm location: the middle of some fucking wolf-infested woods parties: adriana caninii & jackson karavadra
synopsis: Adriana drags Jax out into the woods in the middle of the night to murder him (jk not really-- OR DOES SHE??). Nah, she doesn’t lol. Enjoy some backdated Christmas Eve fluff in the midst of all this death.
@avadakaravadra
“You ready?” Adriana turned to Jax as the door to her side opened and the son of Discordia stepped out. The Christmas Eve Gala had ended nearly an hour ago now. The guests and performers had all gone, leaving the staff to handle whatever needed cleaning. She had lent Jax some of Renzo’s clothes. It was attire appropriate for hiking in the cold. This time, Adriana wasn’t going out at the risk of freezing. Most likely, anyway. “Here, take this as well,” he was handed a gladius that had been pulled from the family armory. “We’re headed about a mile outside of camp, so keep that handy.” The daughter of Mars pulled on the ends of her scarf to tighten it around her neck before she headed in the direction of the exterior gardens. They could slip down to the lake from there, then trek around the body of water onwards toward the distant woods. Throwing a glance over her shoulder, Adriana smirked. “Not nervous, are you?”
For Jax, it had been a bit tricky to convince everyone to leave him at the Caninii’s house. Nearly everyone had questioned his motives for sticking around, and he’d given them all similar implications to get them to leave him alone. Now, as he stood in Renzo’s clothes, he shifted a bit uncomfortably, not quite liking the feeling of wearing something that wasn’t his. “Ready,” he repeated, arms thrown wide to show the clothes. Jax hefted the sword in his hand, testing its weight. Then he was following after Adriana, and sending her a rather curious look. “Nervous? No. Just concerned whether or not your idea of a present would be taking me out to middle of nowhere and trying to murder me.”
“If I intended to murder you, I wouldn’t have handed you a weapon,” Adriana stated rather matter-of-factly. No, her intent was far from murderous. There was considerable danger, of course: monsters, carnivorous wildlife, simply trekking around in a remote stretch of Californian forest in the black of night… But they were individually more than adept at protecting themselves, and having one another’s back was basic military programming. As they slipped down to the lakeside, Adriana peered across the water’s glossy surface, measuring the brightness of the moon. It was waxing, but the crescent hanging above them only represented a third of the moon’s light. Enough to lead the way, though the details would not be as clear as she liked. The silver light that filtered through her eyes caused them to appear almost as if they were glowing, the green enhanced by the same effect. “And it’s not the middle of nowhere. Not to me, anyway. There are parts of it you might even recognize, but-- most people forget.”
“You never know. Maybe you want me to have the semblance of safety so you can really get me by surprise.” Perhaps joking about murdering one another wasn’t the most typical conversation for two people who were sleeping together... but it seemed to work for the two of them. It only made sense, seeing as they had similarly dark and shady pasts. Nevertheless, as they came upon the lake, Jax’s gaze instinctively turned towards the sky, searching for the stars he’d grown rather fond of over the years. Their reflections danced in the water, making for a rather lovely effect. Tonight, Canis Major was rather bright, and Jax couldn’t help but wonder at whether it was simply coincidence that he was in the presence of a Caninii. “Aren’t you a special snowflake,” he teased, though he was genuinely curious about where it was she was leading him. The strength of the moonlight didn’t much matter to Jax, as his practically perfect night vision courtesy of Nox helped him avoid any rocks that might try to trip him along the way... as well as anything more sinister. Though he supposed it did bathe Adriana in a rather flattering light.
“Maybe. Not that I’d inform you either way.” Adriana rather liked their morbid sense of humor. True, it would have been odd for most, but it was the darkest elements of their natures that had bonded the pair of them together as confidants, and teasing that reality was both a reminder of the very fact and a slight balm to the sins that might have otherwise haunted their conscience. While the atmosphere was beautiful, she wasn’t paying it the admiration that she normally would. They had a place to be, and Adriana wanted to get there well before the rise of the sun. “Special is a matter of perspective,” she shrugged and picked up her pace as they neared the opposite bank of the lake. “Now keep up, will you? We’ve got a ways to go yet.”
In the twenty or so minutes later that Adriana and Jax had reached the camp’s border, she paused to turn around and regard him. “You trust me?” Her eyes searched his for an answer, but honestly, she already knew it without having to seek for it. Asking merely reinforced her confidence. “Stay close. Keep your senses open. There’s a lot of activity in these woods at night. A single lapse in guard could get you killed.” A grin flashed at him. “Personally, I think it adds to the thrill.”
“I would hope not. You’d have me questioning your abilities in a heartbeat.” Jax continued after Adriana, his steps making only the slightest of sounds, his movements nearly completely silent as he continued onwards. Such was another added perk of being a descendant of the night, he was nearly undetectable during it. He was once again tempted to look towards the sky, as he always was when beneath the shining stars, but he knew this not to be the time as dangers were becoming more and more of a threat as they neared the camp border. “You do realize I was making fun of you, right?” For a moment, Adriana’s question threw him. It was always a shock to remember exactly how much he trusted the daughter of Mars when trust hadn’t been the most prominent sentiment in his life. Not when Jefferson had taught his children that danger was lurking behind every smile, including his own.  It was a fact that Adriana was only below his siblings in trust... though Cat’s had been rickety as of late. “Would I be here if I didn’t trust you?”
His words had been sincere and meaningful, but his tone quickly turned to annoyed as Adriana spoke her warning. “Please tell me you haven’t gotten amnesia and suddenly think I’m some probatio that’s never been in the forest before, or held a sword in their life. Don’t insult me to imply that I’m anything less than constantly aware. Save that for your Legionnaires.” But his features softened in the slightest as her smile shined once more. It was becoming quite a problem the effect such a sight had on him.
Trust was an odd phenomena. For most individuals, it took years to build; but, for a rare few, it could be determined within moments of meeting a person, an instantaneous sense that went far deeper than logic. Adriana could have said that her trust in Jax had stemmed from a near lifetime of familiarity-- which was true, though not the source of her faith in him. He had been one of the few. They had met so young, and yet, she had always felt, for some inexplicable reason, that he was worth sticking to. So when he answered in the way that he did, that his presence would be ridiculous if he didn't trust her, she couldn't keep the little smile off of her face.
His defense against her warning coaxed the slightest chortle from her, with a teasing smirk to match. "Ooh, are you sure? Because it's my recollection that thus far, every instance of our newfound activities was at least in part triggered by my insults toward you." Slowly, she backed up past the treeline, her smirk growing in a taunting manner. The activity she was hinting at wasn't remotely her intention for dragging him all the way out here, but it could be fun, couldn't it? Just frustrating him with the thought. It was a powerful new angle of trickery that she was all too ready to explore. "Unless you've already changed your mind, but something tells me that's not the case." Her fingers dropped to drum on the pommel of the sword at her hip, a restless quirk that spoke of her alertness as she continued to move backwards into the shadows.
Jax couldn’t very well remember a time when he hadn’t known Adriana. Their meeting had been young, and she had simply been a staple of his growing up as well as life. Perhaps that had been why it’d hit him so hard when she’d refused to complete her Cult task, resulting in her being banned from their shared underground organization. Suddenly he’d been seeing much less of her, and it quickly became apparent that he didn’t enjoy such an arrangement. Her smile garnered one of his in return, yet another thing that was becoming the usual between them.
“Newfound activities? Is that what we’re calling it?” he said with amusement. “You make us sound like a summer camp or something. Last time I checked, fucking like rabbits wasn’t an approved camp activity.” Had she brought him out here just to screw him under the night sky? To be honest, he wouldn’t be disappointed in the least with such a thing. But she’d already said at the party that such a reason wasn’t her true one for bringing him out here. Though... there was a part of him that was wondering how negotiable that term was. The shadows of the forest already seemed to be reaching for Jax, wanting to be joined with one who stemmed from a, quite literally, dark heritage. Who was he to deny them and Adriana? “But by your logic, that means that I’m supposed to jump your bones now, doesn’t it?” He made a playful dash towards Adriana, as if trying to catch her.
"And since when have we really followed the rules?" A smirk plastered itself on Adri's face as she waited for Jax to join her, but there was one little thing stuck on her mind-- more of a word, actually. Us. Sure, in mention of their relationship as friends, co-centurions, or merely in general, that word was nothing special. However, their relationship was much different now, and Adriana had to wonder if the context of 'us' had changed with it. His dash had come at the perfect time.
In alignment with her childhood moniker, Adriana took to the forest like a young deer. All demigods possessed a faster, stronger nature than your average mortal, but the children of Mars were made to be warriors -- stronger, quicker, swifter -- the latter an edge in which Adriana was particularly gifted. Jax may have had the advantage in sight, but she was light on her feet and she knew her way along these paths as well as the halls of her own home. She let the rush of the run wash over her, let her thoughts fade as muscle memory took hold. Whether or not Jax recognized their surroundings, these were the trails frequented by Lupa's pack. Adriana had used them many times, often alongside the wolves when she wasn't fleeing from them in a drill. As the Fates would have it, a howl broke out in the distance, then a chorus of them, and as the silver light of the moon lit the way, she flashed a grin to herself.
"Remember these woods at all?" She called back at him with playful curiosity, her pace unwavering. "Lupa loves to run her pupils here. Most of them never returned, understandably. But-- I rather like it. There's quite a few attractions out here that you wouldn't expect."
The connotations of such a weighted word had flown entirely over Jax’s head, as he’d only been speaking the way he always did with Adriana. Candidly. She was the single person he was most free to speak with however he might like. Though his siblings were, of course, another two he trusted most in the world— it wasn’t entirely the same. With them, he had to think about his responsibility to them, his responsibility to the family. And things had only grown more complicated as of late, what with Leo’s support of the Greeks and Cat’s past poisoning. He hadn’t been able to voice his mind as easily as he wished he could, but the exception had always been Adriana. She’d seen almost all the parts of him, understood better than most what it was to be in a family such as the ones they’d been born into, and yet she’d never made him feel as if he needed to be anything more than who he was. When almost all of his life had been spent trying to live up to others’ expectations, Adriana’s company was refreshing, somewhat of an oasis in the midst of it.
And as he sprinted after her deeper into the woods, he found himself wishing his distant Mercury heritage was a bit closer to the bottom of the family tree. Perhaps then he’d be able to overtake her after her bit of a head start. But as howls filled the air, Jax could barely believe his ears. Instantly, he was transported back to a simpler time. Certainly, some might not look back on their days with Lupa fondly, and easy was certainly not a word that should be applied to them, but Jax hadn’t minded his time with the she-wolf’s pack. Having waited an entire two years alone at home, without Cat or Leo to keep him company after they’d gone on to join the Legion hadn’t been the most happy of days, as was to be expected when one was the sole child in the house of someone who demanded utter perfection. He’d been placed under the microscope that was Jefferson, and been determinedly taught exactly what was expected of him, day after day, month after month. In addition, he’d lost the only people who’d been there to bear their father with him. Cat and Leo.
“Of course I remember them!” he called out, as memories of sprinting through them either for survival or leisure came rushing towards his mind’s eye. For a moment he felt the same as he had then. Not happy, but content, an improvement from what he’d been without Cat and Leo in his father’s home. Though Lupa hadn’t been kind, she hadn’t been cruel, simply practical. And the she-wolf’s rules had been much less convoluted and easier to follow than Jefferson’s, rules of fighting and survival rather than the mind games the Karavadra patriarch was so fond of playing. And for the first time since Cat and Leo had left, he’d truly felt a part of something. Perhaps something should be said for having preferred a wolf’s den rather than his father’s home at the time, but he didn’t think on it. Nevertheless, he couldn’t help but feel as if this was somewhat of a reunion. He was one of those that hadn’t returned, but that was simply because he hadn’t seen the point in trying to go back to something that should be left in the past if he wanted to make something of the future, as well as knowing that even if he had made an attempt to frequent the forest things could never be truly as they’d been, though with Adriana running just in front of him— it felt as similar as he imagined it could have. After all, were they not in a way part of a pack? They ran in such similar circles, and paired with his trust and comfort with her— it’d only make sense to feel such a similar sensation of camaraderie with her to that of when he’d been with Lupa. “So are we following the rules tonight?” he queried in her direction, his long legs still propelling him at an impressive speed after her.
Lupa was a staple in the life of every legionnaire. No one made it into the ranks of the Legion without first passing her trials-- ruthless ones, often. Adriana did not doubt that Jax remembered his time with Lupa; his memory of the woods, however, she had felt it necessary to question. He remembered them. But did he remember them or did he know them? Though she couldn't say for sure, Adriana had a feeling that Jax hadn't been back here since he had been welcomed into Camp. He was a practical person, and a practical person would have no reason to come wander about a wood where wolves and monsters roamed freely.
Certainly then, that said something about Adri. Whether it was her descendancy from Luna, her uniquely familiar relationship with canines-- even as a child --or another instinct entirely, some natural force within her had drawn her back to this place time and time again. Lupa and her pack had been everything Adriana had ever wanted at the formative age of eleven. A family. One that continued to challenge her growth as a warrior yet allowed her to roam freely and explore her place and identity in their world, rather than confining her to strict expectations and future roles. Lupa was by no means cuddly, but the daughter of Mars was convinced that she cared about the young ones who came to her house -- at least those who arrived with the intention of accepting her training. Lupa had raised Romulus and Remus, not only the founders of Rome, but Adriana's historical siblings. She had taken the girl as a young pup no differently than the rest of her pupils, and that inclusion had made her hesitant to leave the pack she had found.
She had a new pack now -- her cohort, her small circle of trusted friends and family. Though, none of those connections were as natural hers to Jax, what with all the dark secrets and lifelong familiarity they shared. "I don't know," she glanced back at him with a grin. "That depends on how soon we reach what we've come for." A bit of airy laughter tumbled from her throat. The moon was a good week from full, but bled just enough light through the canopy that Adriana's nocturnal vision had no issue watching for hazards in their path. She knew this route by heart, as untouched as it was; however, one couldn't trust the forest to remain clear and static. Thankfully, the few fallen trees and animal encounters caused them no issue, and within minutes, their destination was in sight.
Adriana came to a sudden stop at the edge of a cliff, extending an arm to catch Jax just in case he wasn't quite as prepared as she was. Down below, fed into by a small stream on either side, was a cave nestled around the bend from their current spot. "Alright, we're almost there," she turned to him with a well restrained shimmer of excitement in her eyes. "But, before we continue, I have one condition-- you have to keep your eyes shut. No peeking. Think you can handle that?"
They came up onto the edge of the cliff faster than expected, but Jax’s perfect night vision was more than enough for him to see the drop off that was fast approaching, and for a moment he had the ludicrous thought that Adriana might not stop. A brief flicker of panic went through him. Though he knew it ridiculous to think she might launch herself over the side without guarantee of a safe landing, he couldn’t help but be worried, not when she’d grown to mean so much to him. But then she stopped with her arm outstretched, and he too came to a halt just before her arm. The realization that he’d been ready to jump off the cliff after her startled him. Did he truly trust Adriana that much? Or had he been devising a way of trying to save her should her jump go wrong? The fact that he’d be so ready to run after her without a fully formed plan was… disturbing. He’d never been an impulsive person, but adding Adriana into the mix always seemed to throw him for a loop.
Nevertheless, his lips turned upwards into the beginnings of a smile as she turned towards him, the excitement in her eyes all too endearing. “I knew you brought me out here to kill me.” Was all he said before closing his eyes. He’d already proven he was foolish enough to trust Adriana entirely what with the cliff situation. “Just do me a favor and give me one last kiss before you push me over the edge. I deserve to have something sweet on my lips as I fall to my death.” he teased.
“Well, I didn’t think you would submit so easily,” Adriana teased in return, glad to play along. There was a long hum that passed through her lips, as if she was contemplating whether or not to grant him his kiss, but finally, because of his obedience to her order of shut eyes, she puffed out a sigh. “I suppose I can grant you your last wish, but only because you’ve been so compliant.” Stepping forward, she found his hand and held it, pressing down on it and up on her toes to plant a short, light kiss on his lips. It was broken by a faint giggle in advance of her pulling back, but despite their separation, she kept his hand firmly in her grasp. “There. Now keep those eyes shut or I’m really going to abandon you out in the cold to die.”
In no time at all, Adriana was leading him down a narrow path on the cliffside, guiding him over the small stream, and dragging him with her into the pitch blackness of the cave. Well-- not entirely pitch blackness. It took a few minutes’ descent through the tunnels before the pair stepped out into a great cavern. On either side of them, the two streams from outside fed into larger pools. The sound of trickling water echoed from there and the occasional drops from the stalactites above tapped upon the craggy ground. About twenty feet in front of them, a thin sliver of moonlight broke through the ground and cave roof above. This was the spot at which they paused. However, the real surprise remained concealed in the darkness, and it would be her instruction for Jax that truly revealed why she had chosen to take him out so far beyond the border.
“Alright,” Adriana dipped down to pick something up off the ground, opening his now formerly held hand to place the object there. It was roughly palm-sized, cold to the touch, smooth yet uneven, the edges sharp, though she was quick to warn him of that feature. “Don’t squeeze. These are wicked sharp and I would much prefer not having to stitch your hand in the wilderness.” Carefully, she moved around him and settled her hands on his shoulders, urging him forward a step. “On my word, extend your arm and open your eyes. Preferably in that order.” She was nervous now, chewing on the inside of her cheek as her mind flooded with questions of whether or not he’d appreciate it, if it was too trivial, or something he saw as nothing new, but it was too late to go back now. With a final release of breath, she peered around his side in preparation to observe his reaction. “Ready? Okay-- now.”
The completion of the action that she had given him placed the object in his palm just at the edge of the ray of moonlight. The face was already angled, and thus proved the perfect mirror to direct that light towards the darker cavern walls ahead of them. A scattered deposit of volcanic glass reflected the silver in a million tiny specks, transforming their surroundings into a radiant sea of stars that, although artificial, made it appear as if they stood at the center of a galaxy. Gently, she removed the shard of obsidian from his hand and set it in a little nook in the ground that she had fashioned to preserve the illusion and allow them the freedom of movement. “I know it’s not material,” she approached him with bashful, quick words on her tongue, “but I’ve been in awe of this place since the day that I found it, and I’ve never-- you’re the first person I’ve brought here. I usually come alone whenever I need to get away for awhile. So, I thought you might be able to make use of it as well.” Adriana fiddled with her fingers near her waist, swallowing in anticipation. “What do you think?”
Adriana’s hand was a welcome feeling in Jax’s and as she pressed a kiss to his lips, he was more than pleased that Adriana had indulged him. As always, part of him simply wanted to live in their kiss, create a home there where he and Adriana could stay for quite a while— away from the world and all its demands. But her kiss was fleeting, and a sigh of disappointment left him. A moment later, her giggle had him feeling the strongest urge to open his eyes. He wanted to see the smile that went with such a laugh. Instead he was obedient, somewhat pouting that he hadn’t gotten to see the grin he’d become so fond of. Still in a flirty and teasing mood he replied, “But I could never die of cold after your kiss just warmed me.” It was purposefully disgustingly cheesy, either designed to make her scoff or laugh… or both.
The walk most likely seemed longer than it should have with his eyes closed, though soon enough Adriana was speaking once more. He followed her directions carefully, his brow drawing together as he tried to discern what exactly it was that she’d handed him. It felt like some sort of rock, thought he couldn’t be sure as she’d warned him of its sharp edges. But then certainly it must be a rock? The entire thing was rather mysterious, and Jax was eager to open his eyes when Adriana gave the word. As he did so, he flinched slightly in shock as bright lights danced over his night-attuned vision. But then, as Adriana affixed the rock to its place, and his eyes adjusted to the light, a look of wonder came over him. As a young boy, he’d had dreams of being an astronaut, before duty and the words of Jefferson had banished such foolish thoughts from his mind. Only his family had known of his secret wish, and he couldn’t help but imagine this was what it might be like to actually be amongst the stars— his dream fulfilled. The fact that it was a private place for Adriana only made it all the more special, and his eyes flit to her, trailing the faux stars that were dancing across her features.
A large smile had worked its way across his features as he went to her, going to take her writhing hands in his own to calm them before trying to bring them to join behind his neck. “It’s— it’s beautiful.” Perhaps it was an overused word, but the word to best describe his own state was most appropriately… starstruck. He was rendered somewhat speechless in awe, a feat in itself, and he couldn’t help the warmth that seemed to be stemming from his heart as the realization of Adriana wanting to share this special place with him took hold. “And it’s perfect.”
From the look of wonderment on his face, Adriana presumed that her short expedition had proved an appropriate Christmas gift; but, it wasn’t until he came to take her hands that the wave of relief washed over her. Her hands secured themselves behind Jax’s neck and a smile, though smaller than his, lit up her features. “Perfect,” she reiterated, moving a half step closer to him. Like before, she stretched up on her toes to compliment the surprise with a gentle kiss. A few of her fingers slipped into his hair and remained there, scratching and curling harmlessly even when her feet rested flat on the ground once more.
“I’ve been coming here for years,” she told him in an almost whisper. “I was looking for a place to lay low during one of Lupa’s survival drills. I never expected to find anything like this.” For a few moments, her sight diverted to admire their surroundings in slightly greater detail. “This wasn’t the only thing drawing me back, though…” The last line slipped out as an afterthought, perhaps triggered subconsciously. However, with a blink and the dart of her eyes back to his, it was temporarily stowed away. Her smile returned. “So, what now?” She tilted her head as a curious glimmer flickered in the corners of her polychrome gaze. “It is your present. It’s only right I permit you to choose how the rest of your time here is spent.”
Jax wondered briefly if he’d ever get tired of Adriana’s lips on his own, but it seemed that the answer was continuously doubtful of such a thing happening. He hadn’t even had to ask for a kiss this time, apparently she’d known well enough that he wanted one, and he had been preparing to give her one himself, but she’d beat him to the draw. Not that he was complaining in the least. The hand in his hair was something that relaxed him tremendously, it being one of Jax’s favorite feelings in the world, and he responded by tracing the little constellations that were made by the moon and the rock on Adriana’s face with the pad of his thumb.
At her offer of him choosing their next activity, he could only guess that she’d be expecting something of the usual from him, along the lines of a rather risque and suggestive request. But he surprised himself as well when he instead loosened the arm around her waist ever so lightly, and went to shift one of her hands from the back of his neck to his shoulder before moving to take the other one into his own hand. “It seems like a lovely venue for a dance, don’t you think?” He said with a smile, remembering fondly how he’d asked her something similar when New Rome had, quite literally, been burning to the ground.
Adriana had always been a quick learner. Although she hadn’t been studying the subject consciously, she had adopted the instinct to press her lips to those of the man in front of her whenever the atmosphere was correct. Their intimacy was quickly becoming second nature to her, yet she wouldn’t dare recognize it. People like them weren’t supposed to get attached… but maybe if she told herself this was nothing, that rule wouldn’t matter. At least, not tonight.
The gentle brush of his thumb resulted in a smile, which subsequently completed their kiss. She followed the constellation he traced on her cheek for the short time it lasted, then lifted her eyes -- the green in them particularly striking against the silver light -- back to where they had been in anticipation of his response. Had she been expecting a risque answer from him? Perhaps. The request of a dance wasn’t entirely new; nevertheless, as he repositioned their stance, that smile of hers grew ever so slightly. She remembered the last time he’d asked for her hand. They had shared a moment of peace against a flaming horizon before she had tripped and fallen into him due to injury. It was about time she made up for that blunder. Her hand folded softly in acceptance of his own. “I do.” With a small step backward, she ushered the pair of them into motion. “But let’s hope I don’t lose my footing this time.”

HP Cursed Child
You know something that really sucks?  Many people have experienced feeling like you're the only one in a fandom.  What's worse is being the only one who like a certain part of a fandom.
When you read or watch something in the fandom that was created years later, a show, movie, book, whatever, and you absolutely love it.  There are things you're not particularly a fan of but that was even true of the original.
And then you find out that your entire fandom hates everything about it.
I've been feeling depressed lately and I'm novelizing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for my family, who don't like to read plays (we're American so it's never been performed here than I know of).  I started feeling drained and bored so I looked it up here on tumblr to see some of the memes and connections that the rest of the fandom might have come up with.
And I find out that so many things I loved about it, everyone else hated.
I'm gonna vent about this for a minute.  I'm not going to cover nearly everything and I do acknowledge that yeah, the play doesn't have nearly the same feel as the books did.  But neither did the movies, okay?  Give them a break, it had been years, JK only had so much say over the actual writing.  The basic story was hers but Jack Thorne's to blame for the iffy writing style - plus, in play format, it's really hard to actually see the expressions and the feelings behind everything the people are saying.  It takes a lot of reading between the lines, and I feel like most people that hate it just took it all at face value.  That said, I'd appreciate it if anyone who disagrees with me would please just make your own posts about it and refrain from contacting me.  I've read enough hate rants.
One big pet peeve: Everyone seems to think that Snape is out of character.  WELL OF COURSE HE'S OUT OF CHARACTER.  IT'S AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TIMELINE.  Yes, it's implied that time only changed from Goblet of Fire onward, but Snape even directly *says* "One person.  All it takes is one person.  I couldn't save Harry for Lily.  So now I give my allegiance to the cause she believed in.  And it's possible - that along the way I started believing in it myself." So yes, he's out of character compared to the original books.  BUT IN THE ORIGINAL BOOKS, HARRY DIDN'T DIE (permanently, or before Snape).  This was a life-changing event for him.  And so I really don't think that his basic personality was changed too badly, with that considered.  Yeah he seemed weirdly close to Hermione and Ron, but he's been literally alone with only them to depend on for years at this point.  You just can't continue to hate someone when you're in a situation like that.
Harry's shouting at Albus "I wish you weren't my son".  Now I'm not saying I loved this part - I really didn't.  But, everyone yells about how Harry would NEVER do this because he'd NEVER let his kids feel like he did.  Guys, he lived under Vernon Dursley's roof for sixteen years.  He was already stressed, tired, and upset.  He even explains later that he was having trouble articulating what he really meant and that in his anger those words were all he could manage.  Yes, he made a mistake.  And yeah he screwed up big time and there's no excuse.  But I do NOT think this is evidence of Harry bullying Albus or acting horribly out of character.  Even in the books we saw that Harry could be insensitive sometimes if he was stressed or distracted.
Albus being in Slytherin and how he's treated after that.  Alright - who came up with this crap about him being treated as an outsider or a pariah by his own family?  Yeah, there were cruel kids at his school.  But Harry fully supported him.  His screwup was telling Albus that he'd get to choose his House.  The Hat wasn't sure about Harry - it was sure about Albus, and so he went to Slytherin despite what he wanted.  Still, Harry comforted him, Harry and Ginny never stopped supporting him.  Lily Luna wasn't in the play much so we didn't really see her reaction.  Rose got in her fight with him over SCORPIUS, not his Hogwarts House.  Now James - he was a bully, but honestly, as the third of four kids, both older ones brothers, he's actually a painfully accurate portrayal.  He's honestly way nicer than my brothers would've been - all he did was tease in words and ignore Albus.
There's complaints that they were just trying to make Harry as little like Harry as possible.  Well of course they were.  James was a mix of Harry and his namesakes through and through - of course Albus took after the Weasleys' side.  I do have to admit that making him so spectacularly bad at Quidditch was a bit much, but it wasn't a big plot point, and honestly how else were they to show how different he was in the very little time they had?  Quidditch was unnecessary for the plot and so it was exploited.  I'm not a huge fan of how they handled it, but it wasn't horrible.
I've seen a couple complaints about how Albus doesn't seem like he fits in Slytherin, and how Scorpius' personality seems to be flatly based on breaking the Slytherin mold.  Well ladies and gentlemen I have a harsh reminder for the lot of you.
HOGWARTS HOUSES ARE DETERMINED BY THE TRAITS YOU VALUE NOT THOSE THAT YOU POSSESS.
This is why bookish Hermione who seemed like a Ravenclaw went to Gryffindor - because in reality she valued bravery, chivalry, selflessness over her books. "There are more important things!" This is why gentle, hardworking, loyal Neville went to Gryffindor in favor of Hufflepuff. This is why cunning (if a bit stupid at times), Parseltongue, survivor Harry went to Gryffindor over Slytherin.  Because the Hat was confused by Riddle's presence in him, and Harry's real values rested with Gryffindor, like Ron's.
Albus clearly isn't impressed by his father's bravery and selflessness.  He's grown up hearing stories about how great his dad is and he's just tired of it.  What kid wouldn't be sick of being told oh your dad's so great he's amazing can I meet him.  Being side-glanced and pushed aside when they realize he's not like his dad.  Albus grew up with Harry, he knows how much of a reckless dork that Harry can be, about all Harry's dumb little quirks that endear him to a reader but are so, so different than the stories the wizards tell of his heroism.  So of course Albus is more intrigued by Ginny's intelligence and the way she survived, how resourceful and clever she is - things that are Slytherin traits, not Gryffindor.  And yeah, intelligence and cleverness are Ravenclaw traits too, but really, each House is a mix of other Houses.  The lines aren't perfectly clear.  Slytherin is Ravenclaw and Gryffindor in one.  Hufflepuff is Gryffindor and Ravenclaw.  Gryffindor is Slythern and Hufflepuff.  And Ravenclaw is Hufflepuff and Slytherin.  Long story short, it makes perfect sense that Albus is in Slytherin.
Now let me start on taking apart why Scorpius is actually written very well.  This is a child who grew up knowing his grandfather loathed his existence.  His mother was chronically ill since at least his first year at Hogwarts.  He has a father who was bullied and coerced into becoming a Death Eater like his parents, but who married a Muggle-born and tried his hardest not to be like Lucius.  Draco is shown on numerous occasions to care deeply for Scorpius.  After Harry tries to keep Albus and Scorpius apart - which I'll get to in a minute - Draco comes to him, even still being furious with him, with this line "I'm not here to antagonize you.  But my son is in tears and I am his father and so I am here to ask why you would keep apart two good friends." He didn't hear this from a teacher.  This says to me that Draco sits there and actively listens to Scorpius and is there as a shoulder to cry on.  He will do ANYTHING for Scorpius.  So of COURSE Scorpius isn't as bitter and cynical as the previous Slytherins we're shown.  However, he also did grow up with Astoria and Draco, both of whom were SLYTHERINS (anyone who says there were only pure blood Slytherins can fight me).  He grew up knowing the stigma against his family's usual Hogwarts House and against his family itself.  Draco and Astoria would know that and I feel they would've tried to prepare him for that.  Scorpius is clever, he's resourceful, and no he's not your typical Slytherin, but he knows how well those values will serve him as a Malfoy.
Harry trying to keep them apart.  Okay.  Yeah.  That sucked and the first time I read it I thought it was completely out of character.  But then I read it again.  Harry was stressed, upset, he'd just been told there was a curse around his kid.  He's still prejudiced against the Malfoys because of his childhood rivalry with Draco.  He's frustrated, he knows Scorpius was involved in how and why his son went missing, and Harry, for all his good points, is very impulsive and simultaneously very stubborn.  We saw in how he treated Snape during the original books that he jumps to conclusions about people.  Of the Golden Trio we saw Harry jumping to conclusions, Ron generally having to think a little longer but backing him up, and Hermione holding out until she was sure.  So when Harry panicked over Albus' fate, and Scorpius was there as an easy scapegoat, of course he picked the Malfoy to blame.  It isn't as if he and Draco have patched things up.
This is ridiculously long now and I'm tired and upset and depressed, so I'm gonna end it here.  If anybody wants my thoughts on anything else in the play, or my response to any other opinion, shoot me a polite ask and I'll post it later.

Work//Jughead x fem!reader
Requested: yup
Words: 969 ;)
Warnings: strip club lol, swears
A/n: enjoy lovelies :)))
"Okay, guys. I love Pop's, I really do. But honestly . . . Can we do something else?" Veronica holds her breath as the table goes silent in thought. "Thank god, I thought we were going to be sitting in this booth for the rest of our high school careers," the booth breaks out in laughter when Y/n breaks the silence. "What should we do then? It's not like Riverdale is filled to the brim with fun activities for the kids," Jughead comments, Y/n proceeding to roll her eyes and kiss him on the cheek. "What about a strip club?" Archie suddenly speaks up. There are looks of confusion, but an unnoticed look of panic from Y/n. "What? A strip club? They'll look at us like we're crazy if we try to get in," Betty quickly puts down the idea, still thinking to herself that it was dumb to even suggest. Y/n suddenly checks her phone for the time,"Actually, I can't hang out tonight. I have work. But you guys have fun, and tell me all about it! By e, J," she gives her boyfriend a quick peck on the lips before retreating to her car and leaving the diner. As son as she's out of sight, the conversation quickly resumes. "No, we could totally get in! Especially if you wear that jacket of yours, Jughead. Trust me," Veronica smiles, leaning forward on the table. "You're the tie breaker, Jug," Betty says and leans back in the booth. "Screw it. We're going to a South Side strip club," Jughead decides. Archie and Veronica high five and Betty just shrugs. *** "Do you guys really think this is going to work?" Betty asks, still skeptical. The core four were currently standing outside of one of the more well-known South Side strip clubs, making final decisions about where their night was going to go. "I'm positive, B. Just watch and see," Veronica laces her arm with Jug's, marching up to the front door of the club with the other two trailing them. Once they reached the bouncer, Veronica opened her mouth to begin her manipulating, but the bouncer just nodded at Jughead and stepped aside. An impressed look covered all of their faces, but nonetheless, they continued into the strip club.
As soon as they walked in it got dark, the only light coming from the stage and mini stages littered throughout the club. Not to mention, the music was also incredibly loud. "Should we go sit in front of the main stage?" Archie tries to communicate by yelling over the loud music. "Yeah, sounds good!" Jughead shouts back. They all begin to make their way to an empty table in the center of the stage. Once they get to their seats, they're instantly served some sort of alcoholic beverage. "Uh, cheers?" Veronica asks. They all clink their cups, taking a sip with grimacing faces. They watch the stripper who's performing right now, "Angel". Veronica throws some fives onto the stage, while whistling. They all go silent and look at her, but then ultimately begin to laugh. "You must have to have some real upper body strength for this," Betty comments. "So the only one here capable of doing this would be . . . Archie?" Jughead announces. They all break out into laughter once again, imagines of Archie stripping in their heads. Angel exits the stage with a bow as a new songs begins to play. "Hey, this is by-" "Harry Styles," Jughead finishes off Veronica's statement. They all look at him, confused. "What? It's one of Y/n's favorite songs, she makes me listen to it in her car all of the time." They all laugh, and begin cracking jokes on Jughead being whipped. "Damn straight I am. And no stripper will ever change that," they all smile. Veronica then notices the next girl walking onto the stage,"Not even this one, Jug?" Jug laughs, turning his head to the stage,"Nope, not even-" "Holy shit." "Oh my god." "YES BABY YOU GOT THIS!" Veronica yells, earning looks from the other three. "Do you know how many of my friends in New York were strippers?" Y/n's eyes go wide when she spots her friends, but quickly remembers that she has a job to do. "Archie and V, get your eyes off my girlfriend. My very beautiful and very exposed girlfriend," Jughead states and they both comply, looking away while laughing. Y/n is clad in a cropped leather jacket over a leather bra, adorned with spikes. Then comes her tight leather shorts layered over fishnets with her leather boots. "But it's okay for me to look, Jug?" Betty asks with a grin. "You never said that you wouldn't mind having a threesome with her before," Betty almost chokes on her drink when the words come out of Jughead's mouth, and by now Veronica and Archie are dying of laughter. Jughead's eyes are glued on his leather adorned girlfriend as the song continues. "Well I guess more than one of us has the upper body strength for it," Betty says with a chuckle. Y/n continues to make direct eye contact with Jughead throughout her routine, and Jughead finds himself sweating by the end of it, and also having to place his hands on his lap. "Well, I think we all know who's getting some tonight," Veronica snorts. Veronica throws a $100 bill on the stage, and Y/n bends over to pick it up with a confused look. "I know," is all Veronica says. Y/n nods and blows a kiss at her friends. She takes her leather jacket off, throwing it to Jug before sashaying off of the stage. They all look at Jug, expecting him to say something. But all he does is get up and walk out.

Two And A Half Men: 10 Questions About Alan, Answered
Two and a Half Men was one of the most successful tv shows of its time, while also battling a constant deluge of criticism from critics for its crass humor, objectification of women, the glorification of lead character Charlie Harper's decadent lifestyle, and leading man Charlie's Sheen's notoriously explosive private life.
RELATED: 10 Guest Stars We Forgot Were On Two And A Half Men
Despite the controversies, the show kept chugging along until its twelfth season. In all that time, the only constant was Charlie's sibling Alan, who went from playing second fiddle to his brother to essentially becoming the show's lead. Here are 10 questions that are finally answered about the longest recurring character on the show.
10 Is He Really A Doctor?
Tumblr media
Not really, no. Although Alan would vigorously try to convince you otherwise. He is a chiropractor, with a degree in the field from a foreign school of extremely dubious reputation. Alan likes to think he is just as good of a doctor as anyone else and rues the fact that society and his brother, in particular, are always making fun of his profession while accusing him of practicing quack medicine on gullible patients.
Despite the insults, Alan has been shown to be quite competent in his field, helping fix a few spinal problems of his near and dear ones, and running a somewhat-successful chiropractic practice in LA.
9 How Did He End Up Living With Charlie?
Tumblr media
After his marriage with Judith failed, Alan got divorced and found himself paying huge alimony, severely limiting his resources. As a result, he was forced to move in with his brother Charlie at his Los Angeles beach house, along with his son Jake.
This was supposed to be a temporary arrangement, but one thing led to another, and Charlie got so comfortable living rent-free in a beach house that he started actively resisting Charlie's increasingly blunt attempts to get him out of the house. Even when Charlie passed away and the house was handed over to new owner Walden Schmidt, Alan managed to stay on as Walden's roommate, bestie, and temporary husband.
8 Wait, What? Alan Was Married To A Dude?
Tumblr media
Yeah, but not in a gay way. In a strictly bro-help-me-get-a-kid way. Walden, played by new series lead Ashton Kutcher, had been having bad luck with relationships for quite some time. He finally decided to give up on finding a soulmate all together and adopt a child instead, hoping to fill the hole in his life left after his failed marriage and later engagement.
RELATED: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Two And A Half Men Theme Song & Intro
Since adoption agencies don't like handing kids over to bachelors, Walden hit upon the idea of marrying Alan, reasoning that since they lived together, they were practically married already. Even though Alan is straight, he couldn't say no to his best friend and billionaire, so the two tied the knot.
7 Did Alan Get Along With His Brother?
Tumblr media
Alan's feelings towards his brother are complicated, to say the least. Having spent his life being the traditionally 'good' brother, he often felt angry at seeing his best efforts end in abject failure; meanwhile, Charlie's drinking, gambling, and womanizing ways were bolstered by good looks, excellent health, and a lucrative, easy job as a Hollywood jingle writer.
Alan has also revealed a desire to be more carefree like his brother, like the time he pretended to be Charlie and adopted all his irresponsible ways. Charlie, in turn, views many of his brother's actions as weak and pathetic, but recognizes the good in him, enough to allow him to live rent-free in his house for a decade, albeit often begrudgingly. In fact, Charlie once gave up on the chance to be with the love of his life because it would have meant throwing Alan and Jake out of his house.
6 Does Alan's Son Worship & Adore Him?
Tumblr media
Alan would sure like to think so, but both Jake and Charlie would probably laugh for five minutes straight at the question. After seeing his father fail at marriage, live on his brother's goodwill, be subjected to a constant stream of taunting and criticism from Charlie, his mother Judith, his grandmother Evelyn, housekeeper Berta, and all of Alan's girlfriends, whatever respect Jake had for his father has diminished practically to non-existence.
Despite this, Jake feels genuine affection for his father, recognizing him as someone who tries to do good and the right thing, most of the time. It's safe to say Jake looks up to his uncle as a man more than his father, even while being fully aware of Charlie's many flaws.
5 What's The Worst Thing Alan's Ever Done?
Tumblr media
It's a pretty long list, and Alan can generally find some way to explain away his most scummy behavior. How about the fact that he lived rent-free with Charlie for years, yet constantly criticized him for his lifestyle choices? Or how Alan grew more dismissive of his own son as the show went on? There was also mention of an incident which was never fully revealed involving Alan, a dog, and peanut butter.
RELATED: Two And A Half Men: The 10 Worst Things Alan Has Ever Done, Ranked
Alan has cheated on many of his girlfriends, once with the girl's own mother. He has assumed his brother's identity, and on more than one occasion considered killing Charlie, and himself. But perhaps worst of all, Alan is most probably the secret father of Judith's daughter while she was married to another man.
4 Who's Alan's Special Someone?
Tumblr media
Alan has dated a number of girls, most of them being way out of his league. He was married to brainless bimbo Kandi briefly before getting divorced again. Alan also dated his receptionist before screwing things over by sleeping with her mother.
By far Alan's most serious relationship was with Lyndsey, a single mother who seemed fine on paper, but was often shown to be almost just as screwed up as Charlie on the inside. Even that relationship did not ultimately last, and it was hinted in the series finale that Alan was doomed to stay single and live at the beach house for the rest of his life.
3 What Childhood Tragedy Made Alan Turn Out This Way?
Tumblr media
Alan did not have a happy childhood. A running theme of the show is how terrible a mother Evelyn was to both Charlie and Alan, being too caught up in remarrying and enjoying her life to focus on her sons. Evelyn would constantly belittle and dismiss Alan's accomplishments, a habit that continued in his adult years with Alan never really getting any kind of closure over his mommy issues.
RELATED: Two and a Half Men: 10 Storylines That Were Never Resolved
Charlie was also not a very supportive older brother, stealing Alan's dates and playing practical jokes on his younger sibling. Basically, Alan spent his formative years being beaten down by the people closest to him, a trend that continued into adulthood through his emasculating relationship with Judith.
2 Does Alan Ever Find Happiness?
Tumblr media
Despite being perennially down on his luck and in need of help from those around him, Alan manages to put a positive spin on most things in his life. His optimism ran out once and he tried to take his own life, but that attempt was unsuccessful.
It is hinted that while Alan will never find happiness in a relationship, he will still spend the rest of his life in luxury, living in the beach house with his billionaire buddy Walden.
1 Is That Really Alan Singing In The Theme Song?
Tumblr media
Chuck Lorre has confirmed that the opening theme song of the show, which is accompanied by a clip of the three leads singing along to the tune, is a lip-synced performance. The actual tune is sung by studio artists.
Alan might be a lot of things but a singer is definitely not one of them. To be fair, this is something he shares with Charlie, Jake, and Walden.
