Chapter 51: The Praetorship
In the annual elections for praetor that summer, Cicero topped the poll. It was an ugly campaign, fought in the aftermath of the lex Gabinia, when trust between the various factions in Rome had broken down completely.
Tumblr media
Yet, despite the constant threat of violence in the city, the eight newly elected praetors gathered in the senate in mid-September to draw lots to determine their responsibilities for the coming term. The most coveted office, of course, was that of praetor urbanus, which in those days ranked third in the state – only behind the two consuls.
The election itself had played out much as Cicero had expected, and, apart from my master, there were only two men of obvious ability.
Tumblr media
The most talented, of course, was Aquilius Gallus, a respected lawyer and jurist who would certainly be one of Cicero’s rivals for the consulship when his turn came.
Tumblr media
Then there was Sulpicious Galba, a member of an old and distinguished aristocratic family. While he was an honest man with a good name, his privilege had made him harsh and arrogant, which limited his appeal among the people when it came to his potential for the consulship.
Tumblr media
Fourth in ability was Quintus Cornificius, a rich religious fundamentalist who spoke incessantly about the need to revive Rome’s declining morals. Cicero jokingly called him “the candidate of the gods.”
Tumblr media
Then came four men who lacked either means, character or both, and included Varinius Glaber, Caius Ochivius, Cassius Longinus and, in last place when it came to intellect, the patrician Gaius Antonius Hybrida – a heavy drinker who was known as one of the stupidest men in Rome.
Tumblr media
Cicero, of course, counted himself head and shoulders above his fellow praetors – excepting, perhaps, Gallus. But the gods have a way of punishing such hubris, for Cicero's boni enemies got the best of him. Catulus moved to call each praetor-elect to draw their assignment from the ancient urn in reverse alphabetical order, and the motion passed. This left Cicero to draw last, dashing his chances of drawing praetor urbanus.
Tumblr media
First up was Orchivius, who unluckily drew the dreaded embezzlement court. Then Longinus, who drew the treason court.
Tumblr media
Hybrida, he with the least ability, evoked a collective gasp upon drawing the lot for praetor urbanus. As the presiding consul, Manius Acilius Glabrio read the assignment aloud, and the house rang with laughter at the absurdity of it. Poor Hybrida, fool that he was, laughed along, thinking his fellow senators happy for him.
Once the house had settled a bit, Glaber stepped up to the urn and drew the electoral court, followed by the talented Gallus, who drew the criminal court, and Galba, who drew responsibility for hearing cases of violence against the state.
Tumblr media
As Cornificius stepped forward to draw, only two possible roles were left. So when he drew the position of foreign praetor, Cicero heaved a heavy sigh of relief. The new foreign praetor would serve as Hybrida’s deputy – which would have been a grim fate, indeed, for the cleverest man in Rome – so Cicero was satisfied.
Tumblr media
The extortion court wasn’t praetor urbanus, to be sure, but there was a certain symmetry to his oversight of the very court in which he had launched his political career with the prosecution of Gaius Verres. He would make the best of it.

More Medieval names... (continued)
Letitia - a Latin name, meaning joy and happiness. /leh-tee-sha/
Lettice - This is the variant of Letitia usually used in England /leh-tees/, emphasis on the final syllable. This does not sound like lettuce.
Linnet - On the face of it, Linnet or Lynnet may look like it means something like "small lake". But due to the may changes this name has experienced down through the ages, it began it's life from a Welsh name, Eluned, meaning "image or likeness". Because there is a bird, a type of Finch, of the name linnet, meaning take that to be the meaning. Both are equally true.
Lisieux - This is a place name from France. It comes from two elements, one Celtic and one Latin to mean, "new market". The nearest English pronunciation would be /lee-see-yah/.
Lorelai - Recently, this name has gained in popularity, most likely due to the popularity of the American series Gilmore Girls, in which the lead actress was named Lorelai, for her it was a family name. Technically, her daughter also carried the name, but she called her daughter Rory. In German mythology, this was the name of a maiden, a siren, that lived on a rock with singing the lured mariners to her.
Lorraine - Another place name from France meaning famous army.
Lovell - This is a surname drives from two French company's to mean "young wolf". For pronunciation, the emphasis would be on the final sound. /leh-vell/
Madelief/Madelieve - This name comes to us from the Netherlands. It means daisey. It drivetrains very nicely with the current trends towards nature themed names, in particular flowers for many girls. It is not unheard of in parts of the UK but still considered more rare. It would also be a happy honor name for those wishing to honor relative names Madeline. The pronunciation would be /mat-eh-leef/, very similar to Madeliene, only with a slight different ending.
Nesta - On the surface, this name may feel like a nature name, or possibly made up, but it is actually a diminutive of Agnes, meaning "chaste". In digging through my own ancestry, I found two ladies named Nest. I like the blending of meanings on this one. One direction leans into the nature theme, the other as it's own name.
Nimue - Straight out of Breton and Welsh mythology, comes this very unique and install name. It appears to have been created by the author of the King Arthur Legend, Geoffrey of Monmouth. Nimue was the ruler of Avalon and the Lady of the Lake.
Seraphina - Many take this name to mean angels but the actual meaning is from Hebrew "burning ones". The seraphim were known for their zealous love.
Taliesin - Historically, this has been a boy's name, but I think it works as an unusual girl's name. There is a long real life and literature history associated with the name, as well as a midcentury architecture association with Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona, US. /tall-ee-ess-inn/
Tristan/Tristanne - Tristan comes to us from Wales, meaning "sad or sorrowful". It has a long use in literature as the character Sir Tristan in the romantic poems entitled, Tristan, and in King Arthur.
Varina - from Varinius' daughter, meaning versatile. There is a gentle story about a place I once lived. It had a rather unique two-word name (a first and last name). Everyone always wondered how the place had come to be called such a strange thing. As it turned out the wife wanted the train station to be named after her but the husband registered it in their surname. To appease her, he named the community after her full name, last name first. Just before it took affect, she legally had her first named changed to one she thought she had made up, just because she thought it was a beautiful word. Varina is a beautiful Slavic name and very real.
Vexin - This is a surname I found deep in my own ancestry. It belonged to Adela de Vexin. I love how both names have an updated feel. This name was used in Normandy, by a people called Veliocasses, Vexin is just a variant of that. The meaning is still debated but it probably signifies curly hair or a curly hairstyle. It has also been surmised to refer to a particular warrior coiffure, or as in "those with better helmet".
Wendlin - Began it's life as an alternate name for Vandals, or wanderers. It is from the element 'wend' which means was in reference to the Slavic tribe the Wends, Vandals living within Germanic settlement areas after the migration period; they are often associated with the Vandals. The name Wendel evolved as a short form, or diminutive form, of other names starting with Wendel.
Yves - This is a boy's name of French origins, pronounced “eve.” This unusual but charming name means “yew,” an evergreen tree with red berries and sharp needles, once used to make archery bows. Although known as a poisonous plant, yews were ubiquitous characters in old folklore, symbolizing death and resurrection. As this name is pronounced the same as the the female name Eve it seems like an obvious girls-names-on-boys crossover.

it's interesting that you brought up batiatus because i think (and feel free to give me your take 'cause i can't wait to hear your opinions on this) that he as well as lucrezia have one redeeming quality as villains that ilithyia and glaber do not: it kinda seems like lucrezia and batiatus were deeply in love and willing to overlook a lot of slights because of that love for one another whereas glaber and ilithyia came across as more in lust/infatuated and a lot more fickle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
truly so honored to be receiving these messages you don't even know!!! i love hearing what other people think about this show bc it's sooo underrated so do not hesitate to send me a million messages about whatever crosses your mind <3
i think you're right that batiatus and lucretia were more devoted to each other than ilithyia and glaber, but i think a lot of it had to do with how long they'd been together. we don't really have exact ages, but lucy lawless was in her early 40s in s1 and due to ilithyia's comment about "a women of her age" not having children, we can surmise that lucretia is probably in her late 30s-early 40s and that her and batiatus have been married for at least over a decade, possibly closer to two. on the other hand, ilithyia is portrayed as being in her early 20s (at least according to the pilot script) and her and glaber are implied to have only been married for a few years. so i think a lot of it just comes down to maturity; batiatus and lucretia have been through much more as a couple than glaber and ilithyia, especially considering their lower status and struggles for money/power. glaber does struggle for power, but he and ilithyia are clearly above batiatus and lucretia in station so i think it's safe so say they've haven't been through as much as a couple in terms of like. conflict.
we're also told that ilithyia basically begged her father to allow her to marry glaber, so clearly at some point she was deeply in love with him. i think describing them as fickle fits well, since they're younger and more impulsive than batiatus and lucretia. i don't think it means they weren't in love, just that they're both quite selfish and willing to turn on one another. glaber was clearly distraught when he learned that ilithyia was planning on divorcing him and aborting their child, but whether that was due to his love for her or the fact that he would lose an heir, and also lose any potential support from ilithyia's father, that's not really clear. in my opinion it's both; i think he clings to his marriage as a status symbol, but i also believe he loves ilithyia in his own fucked up way.
i also think ilithyia cheating on glaber with varinius and lucretia cheating on batiatus with crixus are two different situations, since varinius was a praetor in the senate with a lot of power and influence, including the approval of ilithyia's father, and crixus was a slave and therefore not really a threat to batiatus in any meaningful way. also it's shown in gods of the arena that lucretia and batiatus have a much more intense sex life than glaber and ilithyia, and batiatus wasn't jealous at all when they brought gaia into the bedroom. so. safe to say he wasn't a jealous person when it came to lucretia fucking around. but you're right that it was fucked that glaber was willing to let ilithyia die while she was kidnapped by spartacus and his gang. but i think that once again shows his desperation for power, which especially comes across when he tells spartacus he would choose killing him over having his wife back.
glaber is pretty neglectful to ilithyia during her pregnancy, and of course he just left her in capua for a while, but also i think the beginning of their marriage issues come down to ilithyia being attracted to power. glaber is at his weakest in the beginning of s2; he's constantly being outsmarted by spartacus and he's in the senate but it's clear that no one around him thinks that he really deserves to be there. varinius, seppius, and albinius are kinda treating him like shit, and he's pissed that ilithyia was involved in the massacre in any way. i think ilithyia sees this and finds his weakness incredibly unattractive, hence why she goes for varinius, a man in a more powerful position. and in the same way ilithyia is attracted to power, so is glaber. so when he gains the upper hand in their relationship later on in the season, his love for ilithyia is only reignited when she's had enough of him treating her like shit and she strikes back by killing seppia.
i find both couples fascinating, but i do agree that lucretia and batiatus have a much more stable and supportive relationship, despite being insane. ilithyia and glaber are just much more immature and they don't have the same struggles binding them together that lucretia and batiatus do. that being said, i find the power dynamics in ilithyia and glaber's relationship really interesting and i love how it all plays out in s2, especially with all the callbacks ("is there nothing left between us?"). they're just so toxic and fun <3 i love how each villain is built off each other in every season and tbh it’s so hard for me to pick a favorite bc they’re just all so complex and even tho they’re villains, i love to hate them.

Spartacus : Vengeance Rewatch - Episode 4: Empty Hands
Sex Scene: 2 (plus lots of slave entertainment sex)
“Cock”: 3
“Cunt”: 2
“Fucking Gaul”: none because Agron doesn’t have any lines.
Slow motion Face Punch: 1
Episode Name Dropped by: Ilithyia
Memorable Death:  Acer… obviously. He deserved so much better!
Favourite Line: “They shall learn a wounded animal may yet bear teeth.”
 - I was so damn worried they were gonna step on that frog.
- I love me some foggy forests.
- I don’t get why Mira keeps moving, like stay still woman, you are trying to hide.
- I remember when I first watched this I was so mad at Naevia for running and thought she was so freaking stupid, but like that girl was traumatized. It makes total sense that she ran, it’s classic PTSD (as someone with PTSD I totally understand this reaction). I think my main issues the first time was that I was getting used to this new actor and comparing her to the s1 actor.
-  IT WAS A HISS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Seriously, the way that soldier took down Naevia is brutal, and I love it.
-  “I fucking hate running,”…….somehow this is the most Aussie thing they’ve ever said.
- Fuck I love Mira. She just full on jumps on the dude and knifes him. She’s like a jungle cat. Seriously, Mira, will you marry me?
-  I always feel so bad when the background rebels die, poor babies.
- I LOVE THAT THEY WANNA BURY HIM!!!!! That means so much, it’s respect and loyalty and honour. BUT SPARTY IS SUCH A DOUCHE (even though I understand that they don’t have time, but cmon)
- I get so bored with the Romans sometimes.
- I feel we were robbed of the religious aspects of the time. But maybe that’s just me, I love the whole wide world of Gods and Goddesses.
- Albinius is not subtle in his interest in Lucretia (to be fair, neither am I)
-  Glaber is SUCH A DICK TO HIS WIFE, OMG! .... And Ilithyia is so crushed.
-  I’m honestly a little surprised Nasir would say he needs a rest, because wouldn’t he want to be seen like a warrior. Especially in front of the Gladiators? But then again, he also completely diffused that tense situation, so maybe he’s a genius.
-  I am 1000% here for a Nasir, Mira, Naevia friendship. WHERE ARE THE FICS!?
-  I am so surprised Liscus is so quick to say Crixus is dead. I thought Gauls were super loyal and devoted.
-  Sparty don’t like people dissing his new bf.
- Holy shit, I cannot get over the utter disrespect of desecrating a corpse. I mean I know Sparty did it in the first ep of this season, and I think I was fine with that cos it was a Roman corpse. But this time, it’s a gladiator. I know, double standards, but I can’t help it.
-  Am I seeing things, or does Ashur also look offended/uncomfortable by the corpse defiling? Shit, am I agreeing with Ashur, noooooooo.
-   “Slave, true, but far from common”
-  I cringe every time Seppia speaks
- “The morning cock has better chance of crowing to such heights”
-  “Empty vessel, barren of life, and prophesy” – did Ilithyia really have to go the barren route.
-   I was so damn happy when Rhaskos was alive……. If only he’d stay that way forever.
-  It’s awkward how excited everyone is, but sucks to be them cos it aint Sparty.
- “I stand with you in this life, and the next” HOLY SHIT I DIDN’T KNOW ACER SAID THIS OMG! This is exactly what Naevia says to Crixus later on. WOW, these are such romantic words, makes me wonder if Acer had a thing for Crixus??? I’m here for it!!!
- Oenomaus and Crixus back together again!! Yay!
-   I really hate broken hearted Oenomaus. Let Crixus smile for a god damn minute would you!!
-  For a second I really though Liscus went mad and killed Naevia.
-  Every time there is a slow-mo fight, I get butterflies. I love this show, okay?!
-  Nasir being amazing. That is all.
-  You know what I find odd, even though Naevia is super traumatized I almost feel like all this fighting and death would be comforting in a way?? because she grew up in the ludus, she was around fighting every damn day, shouldn’t she not freak out and cry about a little battle?? Am I just being insensitive?
-   I am living for all this hissing!
-  Oh gods, seriously the slow-mo scream of Nasir is fucking awful. As in it’s tragically hilarious. He sounds so stupid, I hate it.
-  Mira and Nasir, I love them.
-   Omg, Nasir sounds like he’s saying goodbye. No baby.
- Seriously, the way Naevia walks up to Nasir all possessed like, I honestly thought she was going to kill him. It was freaky.
-   Ilithyia’s party dress is the most beautifully stunning thing I’ve ever seen.
- There is a LOT of boob sucking going on.
- Varinius is so waiting for the other shoe to drop.
-  Okay, I know Seppia and Seppius are brother and sister but when I first watched this I REALLY shipped them. And even now, I still kinda do. I know it’s all kinds of wrong, but the heart ships what the heart ships.
-  It seriously looked like one of those guards rushed up to make out with Acer….. I aint even mad about that.
-   “Cut the pig” … background actors are hilarious.
-   “Boy fought well”
-  I LOVE LISCUS SHOWING NASIR RESPECT!!! Even if it is kinda short lived.
- NEVER EVER MENTION VARRO TO SPARTY, EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-  I usually hate it when Sparty slaps his rebels (I will never be over how he slapped Agron) but in this case, I’m okay with it. Liscus talked about Varro, just …. You deserved it, man.
-  My little shipper heart wishes Sparty wanted Agron there was so Agron and Nasir could see each other again … my logical brain says Agron is the reinforcements they need. Sigh.
-  I love watching Fortis run, that man is so majestical.
-   All the other slaves look mad, Crixus looks confused.
-  A PENIS!! I always said I’d make a point to mention the penis’ because it’s so rare to see them, compared to the amount of boobs you get in EVERYTHING.
-  “We are politicians are we not”
-   I love how Albinius is just watching this dick measuring contest, giving no fucks at all.
-  Jackals, that’s a new insult. I love Jackals.
-  Okay I know I said Ilithyia’s dress was divine but so is Lucretia’s. wow damn.
-   I love Acer.
- Lucy Lawless acting is phenomenal. Every time she’s in eyesight of Crixus she holds her stomach. That is so beautifully done and makes the character all the more real.
-  Lucretia and Crixus scenes are so amazing.
-  OHMYGODS THE TONGUE CUTTING!
- I really love the Ilithyia and Albinius scenes, they have good back and forth.
-   Gods, the amount of fun they are all having at Acer’s expense. I could go on another rant about slavery but I think we all get the gist.
-  “You carry his child”… hilarious.
-  NASIR WANTING A GLADIATOR MARK IS SO FUCKING PRECIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!
- “Do not cry out”
-  Sparty actually looks upset at having to burn Nasir, but dude, it’s gonna save his life.
-  I don’t think anyone realises how strong Nasir is. He didn’t cry out when he was being burned. Have you been burnt? I have, it fucking hurts. Nasir wasn’t a gladiator, he wasn’t used to pain, he was a house slave, he was used to sex. He’s used to pleasure and discomfort, not brutal pain. And yet, he didn’t scream. That’s my baby!
-  I hate that Varinius is into Seppia, it’s kinda gross.
-  I do love that Seppia can’t cut Acer though, it really shows her youth and in that split second I actually like her as a character. She seems real for the very first time.
-   “Absent attempt to fuck your sister” HOLY SHIT I DIDN’T NOTICE THIS BEFORE, THIS IS FUCKING HILARIOUS.
- Hot damn, Ilithyia is so damn sexy. I mean sucks that Acer died and I liked him, but I NEED TO FAN MYSELF COS ILITHYIA IS HOT LIKE BURNING. Seriously, damn.
-  I kinda like a Lucretia and Albinius friendship, for a minute, then it all goes to hell.
- Wait, so Liscus never made it to Agron? But …. I’m confused now.
-  Seriously, these actors that play the entertainment slaves, like they are basically having sex, so do they hire pornstars??
-  Once again, still shipping the incest, but I can’t help it! gah!
-  Holy shit, Ilithyia and Varinius sex scene is hot as hell. Ilithyia makes the best faces when she has scenes like this.
-  All this talk of Crassus makes so much more sense now that I’ve seen s3
-  Poor Nasir being carted around like a sack of potatoes.
- “Fuck the Gods.”
-   I seriously hate the Romans, leave our poor gladiators alone and stop fucking up their corpses.
- How did Sparty hear them coming?
-   LISCUS! NO!
-  FUCK YOU ASHUR. FUCK YOU ASHUR. FUCK YOU ASHUR. FUCK YOU ASHUR. FUCK YOU ASHUR.
-  Wow damn, that pole, flipping over, thing, was amazing.
-  Sparty took on a Roman army, all on his own and he won.
-  I appreciate Marcus’ belief in his people, but he’s way too cocky.
-  “I am not a Roman. I will not fucking die this night”
-  I don’t get why Nasir was allowed to live, but Liscus wasn’t. I mean I know his wound was in the chest so it was serious ….. I’m just sick of all these Gladiators dying!
-  Sometimes Ilithyia needs to calm the fuck down
-  Ilithyia is so vicious. Who knew the ditz from the pilot would end up being one of the most amazing characters
-   Ilithyia/Lucretia kiss, how I have missed these.
-  “I long to see what dawn shall bring”
-  This show has the most beautiful scenery.
-  My warrior queen!
-    I love that Naevia has a tiny blade to protect herself and Nasir.
-   AGRON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at that nerd smile. I love him so much.
- I love that Agron barely acknowledges Sparty and runs straight for Nasir.
- Donar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-  OMG this Nagron scene kills me. Nasir’s little smile, the way Agron’s whole face just melts and you can see the absolute LOVE in his eyes.

Some Sentences Sunday: The Cult of Fen’Harel
Due to a case of severe writer’s block and just existing in 2020, my WIP is on a brief hiatus. The latest chapter is giving me more trouble than I expected.
Anyway, here’s proof I am still writing:
“But—why would he do such awful things?” Merrill asked, a tremor in her voice.
“He believes magisters have a sacred duty to explore the limits of magic. Varinius idolizes the Magisters Sidereal—those who breached the Fade—because they were the first to ever perform such an amazing feat of magic. He wants to produce similar results.”
Ellana sighed. “So, this is the typical ‘magister wants to crack open the Fade and enter the Black City’ situation?”
“Not at all,” Feynriel said. “Varinius has no real interest in replicating that experiment. It’s already been done. He wants his own discoveries to earn him a place in Tevinter’s history.”
Dorian coughed. “That’s the worst goal I’ve heard in ages.”

The Galeone Triplets
Chosen by Sol, Luna, and Aurora
tbh I only have a little bit about these three planned out
the Galeone family is an old wizarding family- like easily traced back to Rome old
One of their more notable ancestors is Gallus Varinius, famous breeder of horse-like magical creatures like unicorns and winged horses
Galeones are typically chosen by Sol, though Luna-chosen and Aurora-chosen aren’t uncommon either, however, only Sol-chosen are allowed to become family Patriarch or Matriarch
Vera’s the oldest of the triplets, followed by Fiore, then Rocco
Vera is Luna-chosen, Fiore is Aurora-chosen, and Rocco is Sol-chosen
Fiore is agender, Rocco and Vera are cis male and cis female, respectively
they were born during a solar eclipse
Fiore loves gladiatorial duels and honestly probably focuses more on them than actual classwork
Vera’s into history and divination
Rocco is great with magical creatures
Rocco is very stressed because he is, surprisingly, the only Sol-chosen Galeone this generation, meaning he’s definitely going to be Galeone Patriarch at some point (the title is currently held by the triplets’ grandmother- Domitilla)

a few notes re: astoria’s children with draco @potterstillstinks —
SCORPIUS HYPERION MALFOY. born in spring 2006 ( i’m leaving his birthday deliberately vague, but he strikes me as a spring baby ). unexpected, but very much welcomed. a good boy overall, but probably not as sugary-sweet as fanon / cc makes him out to be ( though that’s my issue with how most of the greengrass-malfoy family is presented: the idea of them being extremely Soft and Gentle and wholly good or reformed doesn’t fit for me ).
scorpius is named following black family and greengrass family traditions, incorporating both astronomical names ( scorpius ) and greek mythological names ( hyperion ). the malfoy practice of giving the son his father’s name as a middle name is abandoned very deliberately.
AURORA VALERIA MALFOY and AELIANA SABINA MALFOY. born 19 february 2010 to varinius malfoy and alexandra burke. after varinius’ arrest in may 2010 and alexandra’s in september 2011, the twins are adopted by draco and astoria.
aurora is brash, loud, and demanding. marta can give you more information on her.
aeliana is equally loud, though perhaps a bit more diplomatic. she begins playing quidditch for the gryffindor team in her third year as a chaser and hopes to pursue a career of playing quidditch professionally. called ‘lia’ by friends and family, ‘aylee’ by siblings.
ARISTA CALLIOPE MALFOY. born 9 may 2015. unexpectedly gifted with some prophetic ability, very talented in divination. uses this to be generally creepy and to give people vague and ominous warnings about disasters befalling them if she doesn’t like them. ends up writing shockingly accurate horoscopes for witch weekly.
i’ll be writing aeliana and arista and they’ll be available only by request; i’ll only write them with marta’s draco, and won’t be writing them with other astorias.

As this name is pronounced the same as the the female name Eve it seems like an obvious girls-names-on-boys crossover.

i'm doing a spartacus rewatch, i'm watching vengeance and it is wild to me just how bold glaber is and for no good reason either. like this man murdered seppia's twin brother AFTER he clocked seppius for being jealous of how close seppia was getting to varinius. so i'm not saying glaber knew these two were incestuous little freaks but he knew enough to know better than to murder seppius and think seppia wouldn't be out of her mind when she found out
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OMGGG a spartacus message in my inbox 🥺 thank u anon i love you and i feel so blessed bc i could talk about this show for hours!!! putting this under a read more just bc it gets quite long <3
i think one of the most interesting things about glaber (and batiatus honestly) is that he's incredibly entitled. he thinks so much of himself; he deserves to be in the senate, he deserves an heir, he deserves to divorce ilithyia not when she feels like it but when he does, he deserves to get away with murder bc he's better and smarter than those around him, when in reality none of that is true. he genuinely thought he was smart enough to get away with murdering seppius without anyone finding out, and tbh i think he was getting off on having seppia wrapped around his finger knowing that he killed her brother and that she was coming to him for comfort. you hit the nail on the head, he’s so bold and reckless, and until the very last moment before his death he doesn’t think it’s possible for spartacus to beat him based simply on the fact that spartacus is a slave and glaber himself is roman.
monsters is one of my favorite episodes in the entire show and i absolutely relate to wanting seppia to get her revenge, but i'm also obsessed with ilithyia and glaber's fucked up relationship and the parallels between them betraying each other and then coming back together ("we are both monsters gaius, let us be so together" is such a line), only to both die in the next episode like it hits so hard for me. but i do think seppia should have been able to stab him a little, as a treat.
also i know you said that he let her father die but he did literally kill her father sdflkjh like he hit him over the head with a piece of wood repeatedly so. that was not just him letting him die when the arena burned down lmao like he did that on purpose. yeah he's a piece of shit but so is ilithyia and i'm obsessed with both of them.
i love how glaber and batiatus are set up as these sort of bumbling brazen villain types in the first two seasons in comparison to crassus in s3. glaber and batiatus are so obsessed with getting and maintaining power and they disrespect and betray those around them to try and climb up the social ladder but crassus doesn't have to do any of those things bc he's already at the very top. he gets to act with an heir of superiority that, to the fellow romans around him (and even some slaves), he "deserves." i’m obsessed with all the villains in this show i think they’re some of the best written villains of all time <3
