You know, I find it funny that the people who say that Nimona was cancelled because of it’s queer representation and say that the movie was made as an advocacy piece by Blue Sky Studios to promote LGBTQ rights and Anti-Racism literally don’t know that it was originally being funded by Rupert Murdoch (aka one of the most conservative people on the planet):

William and Kate flew to Boston for their Earthshot prize were they walked the green carpet with celebrities. We find out that the winners want invited because of their carbon footprint. They had to zoom in by video. How to you have a glitzy award show without inviting the winners? Who actually was this award ceremony for? William big Superbowl moment but he didn't invite the players. 😂 This was for William vanity. Playing and simple.

Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths (2022)
Tumblr media
Fuck you, movie.  I’m pretty sure I understood what I thought I saw, but all my thoughts are mixed.  This is a film in the camp of Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things, but it has an agenda and it’s dumberer.  This is about THINGS.  It’s about immigrants, cultural imperialism, and aging.  All the things.  But it’s also a profoundly frustrating experience.  Alejandro González Iñárritu gives himself a soapbox to bullhorn all of his thoughts.  The US has abused Mexico, and Spain before that.  The idea of “home” is a complicated one.  I’m completely in agreement with everything Iñárritu has to say about these matters, but would prefer a much shorter, less self-indulgent platform to speak to that.
Simply, this film captures the final moments of Silverio Gacho after he suffers a stroke.  Reality mixes with documentary and fantasy.  Plenty of axolotls die, poor things.  Like those animals, the mexican identity is fragile to Iñárritu.  Silverio lives through the collective trauma of Mexico in his dreams.  It’s a chance to creat grand moments: Gacho speaks with Hernán Cortés on top of a mountain of native corpses.  The god Centeōtl presents a indigenous symbol against imperialism, a figure grand and yet impotent.  The actual film starts with a sequence of Gacho running and jumping over the desert.  Here Gacho creates reality within reality, a work of “docu-fiction” in his mind and on the physical plane.  But it’s also a statement of egotism.  Gacho always makes choices for himself over his peers and family.  Death is the final destination, but he destroys a lot in the route.
The problem is Iñárritu wants to have his cake and eat it too.  He knows fully well it’s a little crass to feature his self-insert conversing with Cortés, to put words into the conquistador’s mouth.  He even has some of his characters say that to Silverio.  But he goes ahead and does it.  He knows damn well his movie is 45 minutes too long, even admits it.  But he does it.  Perhaps the more effective moments are the micro-traumas of Silverio’s family.  A horrifying unvirthing scene becomes poignant as it becomes clear what the implication is.  When the family find it in themselves to release baby Miguel’s ashes, the result is gutting.  They lay fantasy to rest, releasing the little baby out to sea like a turtle.  Then reality sets in.  There are just so few ashes, so few ashes, such a small and vulnerable death.
THE RULES
SIP
Cut to sandy desert.
A surrealist sequence begins.
Someone names a country.
Cortés or Centeōtl get name-dropped.
BIG DRINK
Someone mentions that Silverio’s project is self-indulgent.
HOLY GOD WHAT THE FUCK moment.
Iñárritu seems to acknowledge he’s making a vanity project.

Nuts!
The problem with concepts of sanity is that they are context sensitive. When I was a teenager in Edmonton and I saw someone muttering to themselves, I would cross the road in case the person had escaped from St Anne’s (where I ended up) but now I would think, ‘mobile phone’ and just walk past. In one culture, hearing voices makes you the village shaman and in another you get heavily medicated or…

What exactly does it say about the worth of an F1 World Championship, if you can win one, and then 50 years later, when a team bearing your family name - with a solid reputation across numerous racing series - tries to enter F1, you get rejected on the grounds that your name supposedly doesn't bring them any value?

When @doctoraliceharvey and @blossom--of--snow and I walked into the hotel late last night in our fancy outfits and dripping in glow sticks the man at the front desk stopped us to ask if we needed water bottles. "he definitely thinks you're all on molly" my girl says to me as we walk away. No sir we were just high on love
