That Special Season (Cypher x Omen)

Fluff

When Omen comes up to Cypher one day in fall and mentions offhandedly that he thinks he might have enjoyed Christmas in his past life, Cypher can’t believe how wistful his partner sounds

That makes up his mind that he must now immediately make it the best Christmas ever for Omen, lest their relationship fall to ruin and Cypher the worst boyfriend ever

(It doesn’t help the pressure that Omen remembers so few fragments from his past life that they try to maximize what he does)

Cypher then promptly panics because he realizes he knows jack shit about Christmas, having grown up Muslim and not really paid attention to whatever advertisements there were during Christmas

He then goes to some of the younger agents for advice, because surely they have more holiday expertise than him

“Well, you have to have Christmas trees, caroling, advent calendars, parades, and the like,” Killjoy says, immediately info-dumping on him the moment he asks

Cypher hums, “but it has to be special. For him.”

“Oh we have a lovely lantern festival in the Philippines— they’re huge and light up the sky,” Neon adds in. “That’s special.”

Phoenix chimes in, “oh, you’ve got to have crackers, mate. You know, the things that pop and there are gifts in ‘em? Omen would love that for sure.”

“I hung up lights and cook with my family on Christmas,” Jett adds. “My bulgogi is the best.”

“My family usually eats fried chicken and gives gifts,” Yoru surprisingly contributes to the conversation. At the stares, he shrugs defensively. “It’s a Japan thing, okay?”

“Bruv, Omen can’t even eat though,” Phoenix points out. 

Cypher has to admit he has a point. He has a long list of things that he could do but honestly seem like minutiae that are distracting him from the point. Fried chicken and bulgogi would be great for the protocol but what would Omen want?

As the weeks and then days trickle down to Christmas, Cypher assists the others in the VP with decorating the common space. But even when the tree takes its place, something feels like its missing.

He takes to the internet and sees that apparently, people appreciate ‘heartfelt gifts from loved ones’. Cypher tries to wrack his brain for what exactly Omen might want when he sees an extra pair of knitting needles he’s left out.

If there’s anything Cypher is good at, it’s obsessively focusing on things and doing so secretively. He works on learning to knit (many a Youtube tutorial is used) and slowly but surely, a knitted hat with cat ears (he thinks it’s cute) takes form

By the time this is done, especially since he can only work on it alone in his office or elsewhere without Omen noticing, Christmas is almost upon them

Christmas day, the two of them spend as long as possible chilling in bed, curled around each other in the warmth of their bed. Cypher likes smashing his face into Omen’s chest and sleeping that way, even if it leaves imprints of his chest on Cypher’s face (he has a mask for a reason)

The morning is a whirl of gift giving and present opening. Cypher, who had never really paid attention to what the protocol had done in past years, nervously clutches at his poorly wrapped gift. When he offers it to Omen he can see the surprise in the way he holds it, surprised but tenderly

What’s revealed is a knitted hat to keep him warm (he often complained about phantom pain and aches). The stitches aren’t the neatest and Omen can see stitches missing, but it’s heartfelt and filled with the essence of Cypher. He loves it.

Omen pushes back his hood and puts it on. “I love it, thank you,” he says, voice a bit choked up with emotion. He gives Cypher his gift, a long scarf, full of earth tones and a hint of gold and blue. Cypher marvels at the way some of the yarn shimmers as he turns the scarf over in his hands. “It’s beautiful, habibi (love). Thank you.” He leans forward to hug Omen when Phoenix yells from across the room: “wait!”

With a gust of wind, Jett zooms across the room and hovers in the air, holding a small plant with delicate leaves and bright red berries above them. Cypher blinks. “What is this?”

“Mistletoe, dummy,” Jett laughs at him. “You know what that means,” Killjoy adds on and laughs. Cypher rolls his eyes— actually, he really doesn’t.

Omen laughs, low and soft. “It means we have to kiss,” he says, remembering. Is he embarrassed? Oh, Cypher definitely has to capitalize on this then. He leans forward again and pull his mask up from the chin just enough to expose his mouth. He feels the whole room’s eyes on them and he gives a teasing smile. “Well, better give the people what they want,” he whispers and kisses Omen. “Merry Christmas, habibi.”

idea: Omen copies people and tries to imitate people he likes. at first, it'd be hard to tell. but he's picked up on Viper's speech, and from time to time (...as funny as all the other agents find it) he'll repeat what brimstone has said to him. little speech things. but it becomes more obvious when it comes to behaviors. like, how if someone talks to him but does the "talking with hands" thing, he'll try to copy it. except he doesn't speak, because he doesn't understand the two things are connected. it becomes an uncanny imitation that reminds everyone else that Omen is not like them, and Omen cant understand what he's doing wrong. He's doing what he's seen others do, so why do they find it so strange when he does it? When people breath in a certain, noticable way, Omen pretends he's breathing the same way. It takes time for anyone to notice, but Omen does copy it and never understands why it unnerves the others. and say, when they're on a multiple day mission, he'll copy how people prepare to sleep. because he doesn't understand, and he just wants to pretend that he is like them, even if it means laying there for hours in silence because everyone sleeps, except for him, so that must mean that sleeping is a trait of living things. now, this also comes around a LOT with specific agents. like cypher. since Cypher y'know has a mask with eyes that pretend to blink, i like to imagine he also is very expressive with his body language to make up for the fact he has a mask. and Omen would copy the way Cypher likes to tilt his head, or the eccentric way Cypher waves his hands about. Cypher finds it interesting, and would often subtly do unique things such as a certain gesture or a walking to a certain pattern just so that he could see Omen imitate it later, either with him or elsewhere. The only time these little imitations seem *real* and *lifelike* is when Omen isn't trying to do them. Like how Omen will often imitate breathing just on his own, or the way he likes to keep a hand on the wall as he walks by because it is grounding and he likes to know where he is relative to the walls around him, or how he leans toward things he finds interesting so that he can focus better and hear them clearer. Omen doesn't realize that he is trying to put together a collage of everyone's unique traits in a desperate bid to make himself seem human- he doesn't realize that the little things HE does are what make him seem alive. that those little things are proof that he is not just going through the motions and making a fake personality from bits and pieces of everyone else, because he has his own thoughts, opinions, and little quirks that no one else shares. Omen really hasn't existed very long, has he? and yet, he's already killed countless people. from copies of friends, to copies of himself. how could that not fuck somebody up? he went through unimaginable pain, and cannot even hold himself together on a bad day (quite literally), and has looked himself dead in the eye and shot a replica of himself dead. When he has only known the VALORANT protocol- has only known Viper, who isn't known for her empathy- how could he have ever figured out what makes people human? where would he have managed to come up with the idea that his emotions are his own? where does that leave time to realize that he does not have to desperately copy people so that he can be SOMEONE? or really, so he can pretend that he is alive, in some compacity? and I love the idea that Cypher, who struggled with the same problems, sees Omen struggling and he helps him. Cypher is all too familiar with thinking he is not like the others, and has already grappled with the idea that something about him is wrong. and maybe he isn't quite over that idea, yet. maybe he's just pretending he is, but he'll TRY so that he can help Omen, because he just cant let Omen struggle with those thoughts alone. and Omen realizes, that even if he might not be human nor technically alive, that it is okay because Cypher loves him either way, and thats enough for Omen to want to keep going.

They’re both two people who hold their feelings close to their chest

Owl and viper, the two of them are natural enemies, hunter and prey. Yet somehow the two of them are drawn to each other, through mutual cautiousness and respect

Viper would hold herself away from Sova at first— she doesn’t like how observant he is. His eyes pierce into her. 

One night out drinking, his facade cracks a bit. The stoic hunter becomes loud and boisterous, yet still she feels she doesn’t have him entirely figured out and that infuriates her

Likewise, Sova enjoys the puzzle that is Viper. Half of his enjoyment in hunting is the challenge of it— learning the habits and mannerisms of the prey he stalks. It becomes a mutual relationship, them giving and him taking. It’s taught him to respect life and the creatures he studies

He’s looked her up— Dr. Sabine Callus— even read some of her works. She’s an elusive mystery he just can’t pin down

In the end, the two of them come to each other broken and piece each other together. The other never quite made sense because something was missing— their other half

On the field, Sova provides information from above to Viper, who holds the ground

Viper appreciates Sova’s bluntness. He feels real in a way the people in academia or her work never felt.

On Sova’s part, he loves talking to Viper— she’s brilliant to him and he loves the way she sees the world, as twisted as it may be. They understand each other and he feels freed from egotism (part of why he’s never felt fully comfortable around Cypher or Chmaber)

He is the partner who gushes about the other (in his own way). Naturally, he doesn’t brag— Sova knows Viper’s work stands for itself, but he can’t help but boast about her in a way he’d never for himself

This is not a PDA couple, and if they do cuddle, it’s Sova who initiates. They’re both big gift givers— actions speak louder than words

Even though Viper seems like a judgmental person as a part of the facade she puts up to push others away, the two of them accept each other deeply

Viper lets Sova express his feminine side and she enjoys playing with his hair. Sometimes they accidentally switch shampoos and don’t even realize it.

Likewise, if they get formally married, it’s definitely a ‘both partners wear suits’ type of wedding (and Viper would slay)

Overall, they’re a power couple who show their most vulnerable and intimate sides only to each other, but love each other deeply
