anyway i was talking earlier with two of my partners about experiences in the rp group we were in together, and one thing i was talking about was that like...... the way that some folks in that group wrote disabled characters certainly left. a lot to be desired. putting it lightly.

specifically calling out the one person who wrote a character with selective mutism and then got "bored" of writing his disability so they just had him get better and stop being disabled. (and like i won't claim to be an expert on mutism, selective or otherwise, but... uh....... bruh.)

"undyne was a cop in undertale" cold take. undyne was a soldier. they say multiple times that the royal guard exists because of the war and that when they don't have to fight humans the royal guard disbands. in the neutral pacifist ending the guard is disbanded because it's a tool of war with the humans, not of control over the monster populace.

there's plenty wrong with soldier being a profession and with standing armies in general and with keeping a populace in a state of constant cold war, but it's not the same things that are wrong with police, and the willingness of even Asgore (after the true pacifist ending) to disband the guard is a super positive sign.

Undyne cares deeply about the welfare and the freedom of monsterkind in a way that cops do not care about you. The fact that she doesn't in Deltarune is as much of a red flag as the fact that Toriel lets Kris' half of the room go empty or that Asgore doesn't remember that they don't like hugs or that Alphys prefers grim and joyless anime.

acquired disability is real disability. it doesn't matter how it was acquired. yes that includes disabilities that are self-inflicted through self-harm, drug use, dangerous labor, etc.

when you call people cisdisabled, you can only be doing one of two things:

treating congenital disability as fundamentally different or more real/inherent than acquired disability, or

separating acquired disabilities into cisdisabled and transdisabled by how much it was "their fault"

both of these are really fucking gross ableist things to do.

if you're currently disabled and can't choose to stop being disabled, you're disabled.

if you can choose to stop being disabled, you're not disabled.

if you choose to do something that permanently/chronically disables you, you will be disabled when that something happens, but not before.

it's not rocket science

thinking about how harlan ellison wrote "a boy and his dog" with rape and murder and post apocalyptic brutalities in it, but it was clearly the author exploring these themes himself until he allowed it to be made into a movie and that movie over emphasized the graphic nature of rape culture and misogyny for shock value which made ellison >:( but he's literally the one who made those themes part of the plot and doesn't like that other people were more influenced by them than whatever he meant the story to actually be about

it's like writing a story where all the black characters are racist stereotypes because it fits the setting and thinking nothing of it until it becomes a major motion picture that magnifies that racism and then the author stands there like "...well when you say it like that it sounds bad" because it was always bad you just weren't thinking about it you were focused on something else and forgot other people will pick up different messages than just the ones you intended
